Omg I'm sorry I put you through that. I never considered the Night Terrors quest a Harrowing for Hawke before since Hawke is fighting against Feynriel's demons rather than their own. Poor Feynriel paying the price for Hawke's actions. I also feel like it's personal betrayal to Feynriel as well because Hawke is like a hero to him (his letters to Hawke all sound like great admiration for them). I always choose the ending to send him to Tevinter because the other two endings suck. The bad endings also earn a lot of rivalry points from Anders anyways so that makes it not worth it. Both bad endings do feel like you're fulfilling Anders's worst fears but instead of him, the one on the receiving end is a young mage struggling with his powers. You're right that Anders does care about Feynriel's welfare since he's one of the few companions that would like him to go the Dalish in Wayward Son and he gets rivalry points if you tell Arianni that you sent Feynriel to the Gallows. Bringing Anders along during that quest is also kind of sad because unlike his parents, Feynriel's parents are willing to help their son evade the templars. Vincento may not be father of the year but to Anders, he's a better dad than his own. Makes me wonder how much of Anders's life would have changed if his parents tried to hide him. Side note: Anders responses to purple and red Hawke regarding Justice being in control reminds me how much Anders worries more about Justice's welfare than his own and I wished that we could have at least talk to Justice about it. Big mood on Anders being sad the dark timeline because all my worldstates have him winning and which is why I refuse to do the boring default world state. Anyways, thank you for your in-depth analysis.
Hi anon! 😊 It’s totally fine, no need to apologize! You asked a very good question, and it gave me a reason to play through a story path in the game I wouldn’t have considered to do on my own, and I felt it was worth the exploration. 😃
And thanks so much for sharing your own thoughts on the characters as well! Great insight on how Hawke giving Feynriel to Torpor hits harder as a betrayal, considering Feynriel’s admiration for Hawke.
Anders feeling glad for Feynriel's parents wanting to protect their son from the Gallows, but also sad and wistful reflecting over his own parents who gave him up so easily to the templars is also a deep insight into his character in that questline.
And you're right, Anders always cared about Justice and still put Justice’s welfare before his own – even as far as Act 3, when he gives himself up to Hawke’s judgement, not expecting mercy or to be spared, he says, “Maybe then Justice will be free.” He’s still thinking of his Spirit friend, even when he’s at death’s door – I think Anders just really hates holding people, mage or Spirit, against their will, since he knows what it’s like to feel like a prisoner with no freedom or autonomy when he was in the Circle. He does not want to be a person who could do that to someone else.
Anders is happy and well in all my world states, as he should be! I think he deserves a bit of peace after fighting for so long. 💖
Thanks again for sending in the Asks, and sorry again for my late replies 😅

Part 3: Standing At a Great Precipice
Nova
Nova was in a dark mood.
It all started when she had let Honey convince her to wear one of Honey’s old dresses for dinner, back when she had money and partied through the night. She felt out of place sitting at dinner, surrounded by the rest of third class with her cheap silverware and cheap dishes and poorly made food.
She felt as if she were being ignored by the others, perhaps because she had stormed off earlier. Nevertheless, it was like a llarge thundercloud had settled over her head, and then started to fill up her mind until she could barely think about anything other than her pain.
And no one cared. No one noticed.
Feeling overheated, she stood. With her eyes on the floor, she excused herself.
__________
Adrian
Adrian had never seen so many stars before in his life.
He had managed to slip away from dinner, where he had been surrounded by all the same mindless people, gossiping, sipping champagne, congratulating themselves on their higher status. It was all too much for him, so he wandered around until he found himself on the third class deck, and eventually found a cozy spot lying on a bench underneath the stars. It was cool out, it being the middle of march and them being in the middle of the ocean, but Adrian didn’t mind. He enjoyed the fresh air.
Truly, he had never been a fan of the upper class lifestyle. He had seen firsthand what money did to people; it twisted them, made them start thinking things they shouldn’t. Having been born to an unmarried mother in a dirt-floor home, Adrian knew what it was like to have nothing. It wasn’t until in recent years that his dads and their friends, and therefore Adrian’s friends, had all come into a great deal of wealth and prosperity.
He knew that at least Simon was somewhat uncomfortable with all the attention they received, but it was better that they socialize and make friends among the wealthy at dinner parties in order to increase their own welfare.
His eyes started to droop close, but were wide open when the quiet was disturbed by the clacking of shoes, moving fast. Before he had a chance to look up to see who it was, a woman in a black dress ran by. Was that...crying he heard? Adrian stood quickly and went the way she did, eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Who was it? Clearly, from the elaborate beading he had seen on her dress, it wasn’t anyone from third class. So surely, Adrian must know her. It wasn’t Danna or Ruby, because they were back at dinner. Besides, Ruby was wearing a red dress tonight and Danna a yellow one.
“Miss?” he called out once he heard the crying again. When no one answered, he quickened his pace, ending up on the very back of the ship. Scanning the area, he looked for her; when he found her, his heart stopped. She was standing on the rail of the ship, but she was on the other side. She was facing away from him, gripping the rail and holding herself close to it, as if she were scared. He moved toward her slowly, stretching out his hand.
“You don’t want to do that,” he called out, surprised his voice wasn’t shaking like the rest of his body was.
She whipped her head around, and he froze again when he realized it was the girl who had mesmerized him earlier that day, just before lunch. He swallowed.
“Go away!” Her eyes were bloodshot from crying, her hair a mess from the wind.
He ignored her, instead choosing to get closer. He held out his hand to her. “Just grab my hand, Miss. I can pull you back over. Trust me, you’re making a mistake.”
“Don’t tell me what to do,” she snapped. “You don’t know anything about me.” She searched him up and down, eyes widening with realization. “You’re that...that boy from earlier, aren’t you? The one who waved at me?”
Adrian had the nerve to laugh, which she scowled at. “Guilty.” Smile vanishes, he cleared his throat. “Please, just take my hand.”
“No!” She turned back and leaned forward. “Come any closer and I’ll let go.”
He raised his eyebrows. “Yeah, no you won’t.”
She turned back to him. “Excuse me?”
Adrian shrugged. “You would’ve jumped already, so no, I don’t think you will.”
She rolled her eyes. “Well, it’s your fault for distracting me. Now, if you please,” her voice became sarcastic, “be so kind as to screw off. I don’t need your help, or anyone else’s help.”
Adrian let out a slow sigh. Then, he bent down and began untying and taking off his shoes.
“What are you doing?” she demanded, watching him with hawk eyes.
Adrian slipped off his jacket. Goosebumps erupted on his arms underneath his shirt from the sudden cold. “Miss, I’m involved now, and I can’t just let you make the biggest mistake of your life. If you jump in, then I’m going to have to jump in after you and at least try and save you.”
“Don’t be an idiot. You’ll die.” She faced the water again, and her voice got soft. “I’m not worth it.”
Adrian’s heart went out to her, truly pained at her situation. What could have happened to her that made her feel as if suicide was the answer? As if there was no other way?
“It would be an honor dying, Miss, if it meant I at least died trying to save another’s life. Every life is precious.” He stepped closer once more. “But, I’m not looking forward to jumping in after you, because of the cold water. So, maybe you could save me and take my hand.” He offered it to her again. When she did nothing, he added, “please.”
Slowly, she reached for his hand, grasping it. Her hand was calloused and rough, not what Adrian expected. She started to turn until they were face to face. Adrian’s breath was taken away. She was even more beautiful up close.
He offered the smallest smile. “I’m Adrian Everhart.”
He thought he saw something flash in her eyes, but brushed it off. Breathing hard, she replied, “Nova Ar...McLain.”
“Pleased to meet you, Miss McLain.” Even her name was beautiful. He grasped her hand a little tighter and pulled at it. “Come on, let’s get you back over.”
She did as he asked, this time, stepping up on the next rail and leaning into him.
    And then, she was falling.
She screamed out in terror as Adrian gripped her arm, he himself filling with panic.
He planted his feet, face contorted in concentration, forcing himself to stay calm even as she screamed. “I won’t let you go,” he said.
Just when he thought she was making her way back up, she lost her footing again.
“Help!” she cried, fresh tears in her eyes. “Please! Help me!” She continued to cry for help, Adrian pulling her the best he could.
“I won’t let you go,” he repeated, this time louder and more firm. “Come on, pull yourself up. You can do it.” They worked together, and eventually, she was leaning over the rail and gripping both of his arms.
They fell back together as she made it back over the rail. She landed on his chest with an ‘umph!’, head in the crook of his neck. They stayed like that for a moment, both breathing hard, until they heard footsteps.
“What’s all this?” Nova scrambled off of him, eyes wide. Adrian looked up to see two crewmen, staring at them with open mouths. One of them looked at Nova in disgust, clearly seeing through the fancy dress.
“You stay back, you filthy wench!” He pointed an accusatory finger at her before turning to his companion. “Call the master of arms."
__________
Nova
The only thing Nova could think of was her pounding headache. That, and Adrian Everhart, who was standing a few feet away, surrounded by his parents and a few other upper class guests that she could only guess were his friends, judging from their younger looks than the adults.
When they were found, it was assumed by the crewmen that Nova had assaulted Adrian, most likely for money. She was handcuffed immediately. Adrian had tried to explain that she had been distraught and he was only helping her, but they didn’t want to hear it. One of them, the one who called Nova a wench, said that that was how scum like her got people like him. She wanted nothing more than to show him what “scum” like her could do to his nose.
Leroy was notified, after they asked her who she was travelling with, and so were Adrian’s acquaintances, of the incident. One of Adrian’s fathers, Hugh Everhart, the Captain, strolled up to Nova with a frown on his face.
“What made you think you could put your hands on my son?” he asked coldly, eyes looking her up and down in distaste. When she didn’t answer him, and glanced at Adrian, he raised his voice. “Look at me, you filth!”
“Father-” Adrian started, outstretching his hand.
“Hush, Adrian.” His father narrowed his eyes at Nova, then at Leroy and Ingrid, who had decided to come along. “She’s one of them. You can’t trust her.”
“Stop, Father!” Adrian pulled at his father’s arm. “It was an accident!”
“An accident? Care to explain, Nova?” Leroy spoke up, looking at Nova with raised eyebrows.
Nova shot him a dirty look. "It's rather stupid...silly of me." She laughed awkwardly. "I-I was getting some fresh air, and I leaned over the back of the ship to look at the propellers, and-and-and I slipped." She nodded toward Adrian. "If it wasn't for Mr. Everhart here, I would've gone overboard."
Everyone was quiet for a moment, and then Adrian's other father, Simon Westwood, spoke up quietly, "Is that true, Adrian?"
Adrian shared a look with Nova, and she pleaded with him silently to agree. The last thing she needed was for Ingrid to yell at her tonight.
"Yes." Adrian nodded firmly, tearing his eyes from Nova. "That's exactly what happened."
"Well, Adrian's a hero, then." One of his friends, the young man with a cane, smiled brightly.
"Yes, it appears so," Leroy murmured, stroking his chin. Nova was released from the handcuffs. She rubbed at her wrists. "If that's all," Leroy continued, reaching for Nova's shoulder to direct her toward him. "We'll be heading back to our room. So sorry about the confusion, sir." He nodded at Hugh Everhart, who was glaring at them, and the three of them turned to leave.
"Wait!" Nova jumped when she felt a hand on her arm. Turning, she saw it belonged to Adrian. She looked at him, confused. He cleared his throat and released her, moving the hand to the back of his neck. "Please, if my fathers are okay with it," he glanced at them, "I would like it if you'd dine with us. Tomorrow evening. It seems only proper that I get to know the young lady I saved." He offered a smile that Nova didn't return.
Nova opened her mouth, beginning to protest. She wanted nothing to do with first class, especially his group. It was better they just all forgot about what happened.
      But Ingrid had other plans.
She kicked Nova subtly, shutting her up. She smiled sweetly at Adrian. "Oh, she'd love that. Thank you, Mr. Everhart."
Adrian nodded, shoulders dropping in relief. He nodded to Nova. "We'll see you then, Miss McLain?"
Nova felt Leroy's and Ingrid's confused eyes on her as she finally smiled, but weakly. "Yes, Mr. Everhart. I cannot wait."

ISLAM 101: Your Family: Part 3
Marriage in Islam
Marriage is one of the strongest relationships which Islam stresses, encourages and considers as one of the prophets’ practices.
Indeed, Islam attaches much importance to marriage rulings, etiquette and the spouses’ rights in such a way as to guarantee marital stability and permanence and create a successful family in which children are brought up enjoying psychological stability, observing devoutness and moral integrity, and displaying excellence in various aspects of life.
These rulings include the following:
Islam has laid down several conditions for the validity of the marriage contract.
They are as follows:
The Conditions Islam Stipulates Regarding the Wife
1) The wife must be Muslim, Jewish or Christian, believing in her religion. However, Islam encourages Muslim men to choose devout Muslim women for this purpose because a practising Muslim will be a good mother who will give her children the best possible upbringing and help her husband adhere to the teachings of Islam. As the Prophet (saw) said, “Marry a devout Muslim woman and you will prosper.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree: 4802; Saheeh Muslim: 1466)
2) She must be a chaste woman, as it is forbidden to marry a woman known for her lewdness and immorality. As the Qur’an states, “It is lawful for you to marry the chaste believing women and the chaste women of the people who were given the Book before you.” (Soorat Al-Maa’idah, 5:5)
3) She must not be one of those women whom he is never permitted to marry at any time in his life whatsoever (mahram), nor must he marry two sisters at the same time or a woman and her aunt at the same time.
The Conditions Islam Stipulates Regarding the Husband
The husband must be Muslim, and a Muslim woman is forbidden from marrying a non-Muslim man, no matter what his religion may be and whether he is a member of the People of the Book (i.e. Jewish or Christian)or not. Islam stresses that a man must be accepted as a husband as long as he meets the following two conditions:
Adherence to religion
Good character
The Prophet (saw) said, “If a man with whose religion and character you are satisfied asks your daughter’s hand in marriage, comply with his request.” (Sunan At-Tirmidhee: 1084; Sunan Ibn Maajah: 1967)
The Spouses’ Rights and Obligations
Allah (swt) has entitled husband and wife to certain rights, made it incumbent upon both of them to discharge their duties and encourages them to engage in anything that is bound to promote marital life and preserve it. Indeed, they are both responsible for the welfare of the family and neither of them should demand the other to do something beyond their capacity, as the Qur’an states, “And women have rights similar to those of men over them in kindness.” (Soorat Al-Baqarah, 2:228) Therefore, tolerance and kindness are required to create a prosperous life and help build a strong family.
The Wife’s Rights
1) Maintenance and Residence
A Muslim man is duty-bound to support his wife and children in kindness.
- The wife’s maintenance entails her incontestable right to food, drink, clothing, general care and a suitable home, even if she is wealthy.
- How is the amount of maintenance calculated? The husband ought to spend on his wife in accordance with his means without extravagance or miserliness, as the Qur’an states, “Let the man of means spend according to his means: and the man whose resources are restricted, let him spend according to what Allah has given him. Allah puts no burden on any person beyond what He has given him.”(Soorat At-Talaaq, 65:7)
- He must spend on her in kindness, without ever implying that he is doing her favours or humiliating her in any way whatsoever. Indeed, such maintenance is not a favour but a duty he ought to discharge towards his wife in kindness, as the Qur’an clearly exhorts him.
- When a Muslim man fulfils his duty of supporting his wife and children, he will be rewarded abundantly by Allah, as the Prophet (saw) said, “When a man spends on his family, anticipating Allah’s reward in the hereafter, this act of his will be counted as an act of charity.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree: 4776; Saheeh Muslim: 1401) He also said, “You will be rewarded for whatever you spend for Allah’s sake even if it were a morsel of food which you put in your wife’s mouth.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree: 56; Saheeh Muslim: 1628) Those who refuse, or neglect their duty to spend on their families despite their ability to do so committing a terrible sin for their negligence, as the Prophet (saw) said, “A man who neglects those who are under his care would surely be committing a sin.” (Sunan Abu Daawood: 1692)
2) Living with Them in Kindness
This means showing good character, kindness, gentleness in word and deed and putting up with the occasional faults and negligence. As the Qur’an states, “Live together with them courteously and in kindness. If you dislike them, it may well be that you dislike something in which Allah has placed a lot of good.” (Soorat An-Nisaa’, 4:19) The Prophet (saw) said, “The believers who have perfect faith are those with the best character, and the best of them are those who treat their women the best.” (Sunan At-Tirmidhee: 1162) “The believers who have perfect faith are those with the best character, and the best among you are those who treat their wives the best.” (Sunan At-Tirmidhee: 2612; Musnad Ahmad: 24677)
The best of you are the kindest towards their wives, and I am the kindest amongst you to my wives.” (Sunan At-Tirmidhee: 3895)
One of the Prophet’s companions once asked him, “Messenger of Allah, what is the right the wife of one of us has on him?” he said, “To feed her whenever you feed yourself and to clothe her whenever you clothe yourself; do not slap her across the face, revile her or separate yourself from her except in the house.”(Sunan Abu Daawood: 2142)
3) Patience and Tolerance
A man must make allowances for women’s nature, which is obviously different from that of men; he must also try to look at life from all sides, considering the advantages and disadvantages of his wife, for no one is free from faults. Both spouses must exercise patience and take into account the positive aspects of each other’s personality, as the Qur’an states, “Do not forget to show kindness to each other.” (Soorat Al-Baqarah, 2:237) The Prophet (saw) also said in this respect, “A believer must not harbour any rancour against a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will certainly be pleased with another.” (Saheeh Muslim: 1469)
The Prophet (saw) urges men to treat women with kindness, pointing their attention to the fact that women’s emotional and psychological nature is different from that of men, that such differences between men and women are in actual fact complementary and must in no way give rise to discord and eventual divorce. The Prophet (saw) said, “Treat women well and with kindness, for a woman was created from the rib and thus she will not be straightened according to your way. If you want to enjoy her, you will have to enjoy her with her twist. If you try to straighten her, you will break her, and breaking her is divorcing her.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree: 3153; Saheeh Muslim: 1468)
4) Spending the Night with the Wife
The husband is recommended to spend the night with his wife and must do so at least once every four days.
5) Defending Her, Representing His Honour
When a man marries a woman, she becomes his ‘honour’ which he must stubbornly defend even if he gets killed in the process, as the Prophet (saw) said, “Whoever is killed defending his wife is a martyr.” (Sunan At-Tirmidhee: 1421; Sunan Abu Daawood: 4772)
6) Not Revealing Bedroom Secrets
The husband must not talk to others about his wife’s particularities and bedroom secrets to other people. The Prophet (saw) said, “The worst person in the eyes of Allah on the Day of Judgement is that couple who have an intimate relationship with each other and the man then reveals their bedroom secrets to others.” (Saheeh Muslim: 1437)
7) Not Engaging in Aggressive or Hostile Actions against her
To solve marital problems, Islam has laid down a number of rules, including the following:
- Problems may be solved through constructive dialogue and wisdom in order to correct mistakes.
- In cases of rebellion, disloyalty and ill-conduct, the husband may stop talking to her, but without exceeding three days; if this course of action does not seem to work, then he may temporarily abandon her in bed or abstain from the usual sexual intimacy, but without leaving the house.
- ‛Aa’ishah ~ narrated, “Allah’s Messenger (saw) never hit anything with his hand ever, except when fighting in the path of Allah. Nor did he ever hit a servant or a woman.” (Saheeh Muslim: 2328)
8) Teaching and Advising Her
The husband must enjoin his family members to act rightly and forbid them to act inappropriately. He ought to strive hard to help them follow the path that leads to Paradise and avoid those paths that lead to Hellfire. Teaching them by precept and example, he can do so by acting on obeying Allah’s commands and avoiding things He has prohibited. The wife must also advise her husband, guide him to the right path and discuss with him ways of giving the best possible upbringing to their children. As the Qur’an states, “O You who believe, safeguard yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones.” (Soorat At-Tahreem, 66:6) The Prophet (saw) also said in this regard, “Every one of you is a guardian and is responsible for those in his custody.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree: 2416; Saheeh Muslim: 1829)
9) Honouring the Conditions Stipulated by the Wife
The husband must honour the marriage contract and fulfil the conditions stipulated in it.
If the wife makes a stipulation at the time of concluding the marriage contract, such as having a particular kind of accommodation or expenses and the husband agrees to such a condition, he must fulfil such an obligation, for a marriage contract is one of the most solemn agreements and obligations. The Prophet (saw) said, “Of all the conditions which you have to fulfil, the conditions which make it legal for you to have sexual relations (i.e. the marriage contract) have the greatest right to be fulfilled.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree: 4856; Saheeh Muslim: 1418)
The Husband’s Rights
1) Obedience in Kindness
Allah (swt) has placed men in charge of women, being responsible for their maintenance, guidance and general care, due to the characteristics with which He has endowed them, in addition to the money they spend to support them. As the Qur’an states, “Men have charge of women because Allah has preferred the one above the other and because they spend their wealth on them.” (Soorat An-Nisaa’, 4:34)
2) Attentiveness to His Sexual Needs
A Muslim woman must be attentive to her husband’s sexual needs and is recommended to beautify herself for him. If she refuses to respond to his legitimate sexual advances, she would be committing a monstrous sin, unless there is a legitimate excuse, such as being on her menses, making up an obligatory fast she has previously missed or being sick.
3) Not Allowing Anyone He Does not Like in His House
This is his right which she must respect. The Prophet (saw) said, “It is not lawful for a woman to observe a voluntary fast without the permission of her husband, nor is it lawful for her to allow anyone to enter his house without his permission.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree: 4899)
4) Not Leaving the House without His Permission
One of the husband’s rights is that she is not allowed to leave the house without his permission, whether she wants to go out for a personal or general need.
5) Service
A woman is recommended to serve her husband in kindness by preparing meals for him and undertaking other household chores.

Only a Little Superstitious - Chapter 22
Since I left this story on a huge cliffhanger earlier this week, I decided that since I already had this chapter written, I'd go ahead and give a double update! The sad part is that this story is now down to the final few chapters. I'm hoping to finish this tale by the end of 2018 and I really want to thank everyone who’s been following this story.  I’m also remembering to tag @killian-whump and @hookaroo whom I realized I’d forgotten to tag on the last 2 updates.  I apologize for the oversight and I know you’ll both enjoy this chapter!  Now, enjoy the next installment!
Also on AO3 and FF.net

Killian's eyes may have been closed, but he wasn't sleeping. He was conscious enough to have heard the crunching of gravel beneath a heavy boot and still savvy enough to recognize that the noise had originated from the opposite direction that Emma and Carlos had traveled. Someone was approaching and both he and Grandmother were essentially unarmed. He did have his hook at the ready, but in his fever-weakened state, it was hardly as useful as his cutlass or Emma's pistol. He threw open his eyelids to spot his elder companion scanning the low brush and chaparral surrounding them, having heard the same noise and seeking its origin.
"Who's there?" Grandmother demanded, her voice stern and unwavering.
"Well, what do we have here?" a deep voice responded, a taunting laugh resonating with his words. The speaker remained obscured by the scrub brush, but Killian already knew the voice. "Tough little, old Indian lady and an even older pirate who's seen far better days?" Kronk mocked them as he stepped into view, ducking under the rock ledge to escape the torrential rain.
"How the bloody hell did you find us?" Killian asked, clinging to as much bravado as he could muster.
"I had to put a few things together after speaking to your lovely wife," Kronk began as he shook some of the excess rainwater off of his clothing, showering Killian with the castoff droplets. "Your wife really shouldn't have left that box behind in your hospital room… Seeing the Ranger's name on the label made sense. I'd already figured that you'd had help getting off of that mountainside, but I had to think for a while about what you would have needed shipped to you from back home. Then, it finally dawned on me that somebody had figured out that the dagger was what opened up the portal which brought us all here. I took a wild guess that your wife might try to open up the portal again, this being the last day of the blood moon cycle after all, but there's still the little matter of the missing piece. The dagger won't work unless it's whole so even though you somehow managed to find the right location on this mountain, she can't open it. So, why don't you just save me some time and tell me where Emma and that broken piece are so I can get the hell off of this mountain again."
"I'm not telling you anything, Mate," Killian spat back as Kronk took another step closer. "Emma's not going to willingly hand anything over to you."
"I don't need you to tell me," Kronk replied, shooting a wicked smirk towards Killian before setting his sights on Grandmother, taking another menacing step towards her. "I'll bet I can get the Indian to talk…"
"I am a child of the Navajo Nation," Grandmother stated defiantly. "My people are not from India."
Kronk was pleasantly surprised by the old woman's bold response, enough that he took his eye off of the pirate just long enough for Killian to concentrate all of his remaining strength into thrusting his leg out into Kronk's path just as his opponent closed the distance between himself and Grandmother. The toe of Killian's boot caught Kronk's shin, enough to make him stumble, but not enough to bring down the burly man.
"Keep away from her!" Killian snarled, needing Kronk to back off long enough for Emma and Carlos to return. How long did it take to magically fuse a blade anyway?"
"You think you can fight me now?" Kronk laughed, unfazed by Killian's words or actions. "You haven't even the strength to stand, let alone fight! You had to be dragged out here, so why should I think you're any manner of threat?"
"I suggest you sod off before Emma returns," Killian warned, although it was becoming obvious that his posturing was waning. "She does have magic that she can harness here…"
"Oh, I'm counting on that," Kronk stated with a sickening grin – a split-second before lashing out with his boot to kick the pirate solidly in the rib cage. The impact propelled Killian's already impaired form into the rock face, his head and back striking heavily before he crumpled to the sandy earth, gasping for breath and rapidly succumbing to unconsciousness.
"Emma! Carlos!" Grandmother cried out as Kronk's attention returned to her. Unarmed, she'd be no match for the hulking figure before her.
"Now, about my dagger…" Kronk sneered as he reached the elderly woman in three long strides, but as he raised his arm to strike her, a single gunshot rang out, sending a puff of sand swirling into the air just inches from his foot. He froze, his eyes lifting to scan the horizon for the source of the shot.
"Next one won't be a warning," Emma snarled as Kronk's position shifted to meet her steely gaze, the old woman next to him now forgotten as he stared down the blonde sheriff. Carlos rushed to Grandmother's side, shielding her from Kronk, but she pushed her way around her grandson, more concerned for Killian's welfare than her own. With Kronk no longer barreling towards her, Grandmother hurried to her patient's side, fearing the additional damage that Kronk may have just inflicted.
Keeping the barrel of her weapon trained on the threat before her, Emma allowed her sight to drift from Kronk for just a moment, straining to get a better look at the slumped, unmoving body of her husband. He lay curled in a fetal position, his back against the rocks, and even from her position, Emma could see the dark stain that had formed across the front of his midnight blue shirt. Her mind tried to excuse it as simply rainwater from their hike up here or sweat from his fever, but her heart wouldn't be convinced, especially when she could see the trickle of blood that was streaming across his left ear onto his cheek.
"What did you do to him?" Emma demanded, gesturing at Kronk with the gun barrel, directing him away from her husband and their friends.
"He got in my way – as you are now," Kronk responded, making no effort to step aside and showing little fear of the weapon aimed at him.
"This beast kicked him," Grandmother informed Emma as her skilled hands examined Killian's wounds. "The impact has reopened several of the sutures and when he struck the rock, he cut open his scalp."
"As I said, he was in my way," Kronk repeated defiantly, "and he wouldn't tell me where I could find my dagger. I suppose it would be because you have it?"
"You mean this dagger?" Emma crouched and withdrew the blade that she'd hastily tucked into the cuff of her boot before hurrying back down the trail from the cavern. Kronk's eyes grew wide as he took in the sight of the repaired blade that she held up with her left hand, no longer even caring that she still held a pistol in her right.
"Ah, that would be the one. Does it still bear traces of your husband's blood on the blade?" Kronk taunted, trying to incite her anger, but despite a piercing glare from her steeled green eyes, she didn't break her composure. "So nice to see that you've already managed to repair it for me…"
"For you?" Emma laughed at him, her tone decidedly sarcastic, not the least bit jovial. "You aren't going to lay a hand on this dagger again, Kronk. We figured it out - why you were looking for us. You were searching for the missing piece."
"I have to admit that I didn't expect the point would shear off so easily upon striking bone, but what can one really expect from a blade that was forged hundreds of years ago?" Kronk raised his arms in a shrug to only further incense Emma. "You can just hand it over to me and I'll be on my way…"
"Do you fail to notice that you're the one at gunpoint here?" Emma reminded him, barely flinching as a flash of lightning illuminated the overcast skies. "Step aside so I can open up the portal. I'll let you return to Storybrooke with us, but you're going to face attempted murder charges."
"I have absolutely no intention of returning to that irritating little town of yours," Kronk insisted. "I have far bigger plans once I reach my intended destination."
"Like what?" Emma asked her quarry as she inched closer to him, desperately wanting to get a better look at what was happening with Killian, but she didn't dare take her eyes off of Kronk. "Are you crazy enough to think that the portal will take you back to your time?"
"My time?" Kronk scoffed. "Why on earth would I want to go back there? I jumped at the most ridiculous proposition I had ever heard long ago so I could get away from that place! I believed an old man's crazy story about a fancy knife he'd found buried in some cave way out in the Arizona desert that he claimed could transport someone to a land of untold riches…"
"What in the hell are you rambling on about?" Emma wondered. "You're going on like you found the gateway to El Dorado or something…"
"That's because I did," was Kronk's surprising reply. "I mean, it wasn't exactly El Dorado or Shangri La as the legends might imply, but it may as well have been. That's where I intend to return, and now, with the Warden gone, it shouldn't be difficult at all to attain a position of leadership…"
His use of the term Warden had the gears inside Emma's brain turning in overdrive… Where had she heard that term before? And he was gone…? "Oh my god, you're trying to get back to the Land of Untold Stories?" she blurted out in stunned realization.
"It was the Land of Plenty to us," Kronk corrected her, still patiently watching and waiting for a chance to disarm the Sheriff and relieve her of the dagger. "That's how it was described to me so many years ago in an Arizona Territory saloon by an old man everyone though mad. He barely spoke a word of English and so few out here in this godforsaken land spoke German so no one understood what he was trying to tell them..."
"But you could?"
"My parents emigrated from Germany and Austria and I grew up speaking German at home and English at school so yes, I understood his tale about a magic dagger. He'd come into town periodically carrying large gold nuggets that people around here thought were evidence of a mine hidden somewhere in these desolate mountains, but what he'd really stumbled upon was so much better." Kronk paused a moment trying to decide how much more of his story he should tell, but the longer he talked, the more likely she was to let her guard down. "That old man had found a key to another world – one with abundant riches, including veins of pure gold filling the verdant hillsides, but every time he traveled there, he'd return to find that weeks, sometimes months, had passed here. He tried to live a normal life here on what treasure he'd brought back with him, but after a few years, he grew tired of the desert and desired to return. He just couldn't remember where the gateway was so he spent several more years trying to find his way back to that cave, mapping out his search area until he found it at last."
"That's a great story, Kronk, but you're really just wasting my time. I need you to just stand down so I can get that portal opened because, I swear, if my husband dies, you'll wish you had too."
"We'll see," Kronk said, sensing an opening as Emma's sight drifted once again to her injured husband so he suddenly charged at her, knocking Emma to the ground. Both the dagger and her gun went flying, his momentum sending him tumbling over top of her. Kronk clambered to his feet, recovering faster from the collision than she did as she sat up, searching for the two items she'd lost hold of. A flash of lightning glinted off the blade of the dagger, half buried in a muddy puddle to her left and about ten feet from Kronk's position. No way she was going to let him get there first.
She stumbled to her knees and raised her hands, summoning all of the energy she could, both from the storm and from her own inner emotional turmoil and as the next bolt of lightning descended from the heavens, an equally bright ball of light blasted from her fingertips, knocking Kronk onto his rear. Kronk practically snorted at her unimpressive magical outburst, pushing himself back upright and lunging toward the dagger. Emma had reclaimed the upper hand though and easily blasted the blade away from his reach, the dagger landing next to Carlos.
"Impressive," Kronk jeered, remaining undaunted by Emma's display of magical prowess.
"I'm just getting warmed up, buddy," she hissed back at him.
With the dagger inches from his fingertips, Carlos glanced over at Grandmother for validation, as if he needed her permission to touch it. She nodded and mouthed the single word "Go" before he snatched it up while she returned to her task of applying pressure to Killian's wounds, her own fingers already slick with the pirate's blood. Seeing the artifact back in friendly hands, Emma used one more blast of magical energy to send Kronk flying across the clearing, his momentum only ceasing when he collided with a towering, ancient cactus. They all could hear Kronk's screams as his back, arms and legs were impaled by dozens of razor-sharp spines, but none of them cared for his agony at the moment.
Ignoring Kronk's pleas for help, Emma scurried over to her husband who remained laying unconscious and bleeding beneath the overhang. Dropping to her knees at his side, she gingerly ghosted her fingertips across his temple, finding his skin unexpectedly cool and damp to the touch.
"He's not feverish…" Emma said, her voice shaking as the impact of her words set in. Killian wasn't feverish because his lifeforce was slowing slipping away as he bled. She thought for a moment that she could possibly amass enough energy to heal him, but then would she have enough in her to still open the portal? And if it didn't work? What if he was already too far gone?
"The spirits are calling to him," Grandmother stated solemnly. "You must do this now - before he decides to answer them."
"Here," Carlos said as he thrust the dagger's handle into Emma's hands. "How do you get this thing to work now?"
"It needs blood… a blood sacrifice on the blade. I don't know why it was designed that way, but it was," Emma rambled, her eyes falling to Killian's blood-soaked shirt. "I don't think Killian's will work again…"
Grandmother raised her hand slightly, but Carlos immediately pushed it back down. "You can use mine," he offered, rolling up his sleeve to bare the ruddy skin of his forearm.
"I can't ask you to do that," Emma responded, shaking her head as she prepared to draw the blade across her own palm.
"You're not asking – I'm volunteering," Carlos insisted, taking hold of Emma's wrist before she sliced open her own skin. "I've already witnessed you do some amazing things up here and now, I want to do my part to help."
"I'm not even sure this will work," she lamented, suddenly insecure of her own abilities.
"It will work," Carlos assured her with a broad smile. "I mean you've pulled off one minor miracle already – you got an old Navajo woman to venture up onto the side of a mountain in the middle of a thunderstorm. If you can get her past her superstitions about being struck by lightning, you can do anything."
There was no other choice, Emma reminded herself. Killian needed medical attention and absolutely would not survive another trip off of this mountain. Their friends and family back home were waiting there to help… "Alright, let's do this. This might hurt a bit, but as soon as we get back to Storybrooke, it'll be easily healed."
"Don't worry. I've got a pretty high pain tolerance," he assured her as he extended his forearm toward her, bracing himself as Emma drew the sharpened edge of the blade across his skin between his wrist and elbow. The newly incised wound open and oozing, she pressed the flat of the blade into the crimson flow, rotating it until both sides of the blade were completely saturated.
"Thank you," she said graciously as she pointed the blade to the sky so that the liquid could trickle onto the hilt then trail over it to reach the moon image carved into its handle. She expected the portal to open just as it had in Storybrooke, nearly immediately after Kronk had thrust this same blade into Killian's chest, but she grew increasingly anxious as nothing was happening. "What am I doing wrong?" she asked herself aloud. Maybe there wasn't enough magic left in her after her battle with Kronk? She couldn't stop her gaze from dropping to Killian's deathly still form on the ground before her. She had to do this, she told herself, letting the words echo through her head. She had to keep her promise to get them home.
She lifted her chin into the drenching rain, closing her eyes, even though that wasn't likely to stop the flow of tears – not that anyone would be able to spot them amidst the raindrops anyway. Her thoughts drifted back to the last time she'd held a dagger in the middle of a storm – the Dark One dagger – and she decided she needed to do exactly as she had then. She wrapped both hands around the handle as the rain began to wash the blood from the blade, sending dull, pinkish rivulets over her knuckles when she hoisted the blade over her head. Lightning crackled around her and thunder boomed in her ears as the blade began to glow with a bright orange light, not that Emma could see it, struggling to maintain her focus.
She also didn't see that behind her, Nehemiah Kronk had regained his composure. The huge man was still plucking cactus spines from his clothing, but he'd been coherent enough to realize that Emma's magic was activating the dagger's magic and he needed to get to it. Carlos saw Kronk make a move toward Emma and started crawling desperately through the muck to retrieve her lost weapon, shouting a warning to her as he scrambled for the gun. "Emma! Behind you!"
Kronk was nearly upon her as the lightning bolt struck, drawn in by the dagger itself, but instead of striking Emma down and electrocuting her, something incredibly unplanned occurred. A sphere born of pure energy formed around Emma and the others, repelling the advancing Kronk and dispersing the electrical charge in a protective field across the sphere. Carlos remained on his knees, frozen in stunned silence as he realized that not even the steady rain was penetrating the sphere. They were inside their own little magic bubble, but Emma didn't look entirely pleased as this wasn't what she had expected to conjure.
Emma's eyes lifted upward, focusing on the gathering storm clouds above them, her green eyes sparking with each crackle of lightning overhead. Her arms still held the dagger high, as if offering it as a tribute to unseen gods, a pose Carlos imagined the high priests of the Inca, the Maya or the Aztec may have taken after completing a sacrifice. It was both fascinating and frightening simultaneously but as the Ranger knelt in awe of Emma's stance, he realized that he could no longer tell if Killian was breathing or not. He instantly found himself praying to gods he hadn't even thought of since childhood, hoping fervently that the great thunder gods would spare his friend.
A few feet away, a bruised and battered Kronk sat up, shaking his dazed head as he studied the protective sphere that surrounded the Sheriff and the others. It sparked with energy and pulsed with light as bright as if it had been forged from the lightning itself. Whatever this force field was, it still was not a portal so he scanned the bubble for a potential opening that might allow him access to the dagger. He would find a way to return to his Land of Plenty. Hell, this wasn't even the greatest danger he'd faced over the years. Playing sidekick to Yzma had certainly put him on the receiving end of plenty of trouble and many painful repercussions, many of them at the hand of those loyal to the Warden, but more often due to Yzma's magical failures. He'd never really feared anything that hack of a sorceress conjured up so why fear anything the Savior Sheriff could do either?
As though she could sense his approach this time, Emma turned her attention to Kronk. "Don't come any closer, Kronk," she warned. "You'll only electrocute yourself."
"You think I never felt the Warden's taser?" Kronk replied. "This doesn't frighten me and I will still get that dagger so I can return to MY home."
"You can't, Kronk," Emma stated, shaking her head vigorously. "You can't go back to the Land of Untold Stories. It's not there anymore."
"Don't lie to me! The Warden is dead so he can't stop me from going back and neither can you!" Kronk shouted confidently.
"I swear to you – it's not a lie. Whatever deal Hyde struck with Rumplestiltskin, it brought everyone to Storybrooke and the Land of Untold Stories ceased to exist so there's no way you can't go back." Emma tried to reason with her adversary, but he simply wouldn't be convinced. "Think about it, Kronk – were you planning to return to Arizona? It certainly wasn't Killian's chosen destination. You opened the portal wanting to go back and it did bring you back – to where you started. Why else would you have ended up here?"
"It's all lies!" Kronk shouted as he barreled into the sphere preparing to be thrown back again by its power.
"Kronk, stop!" Emma cried as the protective sphere once again defended them from his assault only this time, a bolt of lightning shot down from the sky, striking the fortified bubble at the same time that Kronk made contact with it. He seemed to be suspended for a moment as the storm's power surged through his body, then he was released from the lightning's grip, dropping to the ground with an audible thud. And this time, he wouldn't get up.
Emma's emotions were swirling. She hadn't wanted to see Kronk electrocuted. She'd only wanted him to stand down so that she could get them home. She wasn't even entirely certain if he was dead, but she couldn't imagine him surviving that… Whatever his motives were, he should have just stopped…
But she didn't dwell on that thought for long because at that same moment, the electrical bubble that encircled them began to rotate.
"Emma, what the hell is going on?" Carlos wondered, hoping his friend might have some insight as to what exactly they were experiencing.
"I don't know," she replied honestly. The dagger clutched in her hand had begun to glow once again and she could now feel it heating up against her skin. She wanted to drop it, but it wouldn't allow her to release her grasp, her flesh searing as the bubble around them exploded outward and a familiar, swirling portal materialized before them. "There!" she cried out joyfully. "There's our way back to Storybrooke!"
Her energy nearly spent, Emma stumbled backward a step, but Carlos sprang to his feet to steady his friend before she fell. "Easy there," he said as he caught sight of her reddened, blistered hands. "Emma, did the dagger do that to you?"
"Yeah," she replied, relieved that she could finally unfurl her fingers from the dagger's handle. She grimaced as she tucked the blade back into her boot since they'd still need the dagger to remove the dark magic from Killian once they reached Storybrooke, but she had no desire to keep holding it, even if it wasn't burning her skin any longer.
"Let me see, child," Grandmother spoke up, turning her attention from aiding Killian long enough to glance at Emma's outstretched palms. The old woman motioned for Emma to move closer so she could get a better look while Carlos stared at the swirling vortex, trying to think of the best way to get Killian into it. Grandmother frowned as she inspected Emma's hands, but while she was concerned about the burns, they did have more pressing problems. "They appear to be first and second-degree burns. They'll be a bit painful, but right now, our first priority has to be getting you home – both of you. How long will the portal remain open?"
"With such unstable magic around here, I have no idea," Emma confessed, her gaze understandably drawn to her husband's unmoving body.
"Then we must go now," Grandmother insisted. "He is barely drawing shallow breaths. I'm worried that when Kronk kicked him, he did more than just re-open the existing wound."
"I don't think we'll have time to strap him back into the sled," Carlos stated as his eyes darted back and forth between the portal and his injured friend. "This isn't going to involve a lot of walking around, will it?" he asked Emma, entirely unsure of how portal travel would work.
His question caught her slightly off-guard, so Emma had to think for a moment before answering. "No..., there's no real walking involved at all… You just jump into that swirling hole and you end up somewhere else – hopefully in Storybrooke. Landings aren't always pretty, especially if you get dumped out onto concrete…"
"Well then, I only know one way that we're going to be able to do this…" Carlos stated as he stood over Killian, straddling the wounded man's legs. "I haven't done this since my training days, so please forgive me, my friend. This might be a little bumpy…" He leaned over and grasped Killian's right arm, tugging the unconscious pirate into a semi-upright position. He then wrapped both of his arms around Killian's torso and hoisted his friend's body upward until he could swing Killian's head and upper body onto his shoulder into a fireman's rescue carry.
Once he had Killian's motionless form properly balanced, Carlos strained every muscle in his back and legs to push himself into a standing position. "Can we go now?" Carlos stated, knees ready to buckle from the extra exertion but fearing that the vortex might close on them at any moment. "Lead the way, Emma…"
Sensing that Emma might need a little support, Grandmother hooked her elbow around Emma's arm as Carlos positioned himself behind them.
"Next stop, Storybrooke," Emma stated as she mustered the strength needed to leap forward, Grandmother's spry little frame keeping step with her. Carlos hesitated a moment as he watched the two women vanish into the vortex then set his composure and took that leap of faith himself - all the while reminding himself not to drop his unconscious friend. He had no idea how this thing worked or where the hell he was going to end up, but this was already one hell of an adventure.

Conservation of Mattering
Naomi Nagata has endured more than her fair share of pain for the sake of her relationship with her child’s father. She has finally reached her limit and decides to leave. However, escaping the grasp of someone like Marco Inaros isn’t going to be easy without a lot of help.
This chapter is in a format I’m unsure about, but it felt like this part belonged together. I hope that everything continues to feel like it fits. I welcome feedback on tumblr or AO3!
Chapter 3 (on AO3 and below)
'Just think about it.' It sticks in Jim's head, more a command than a request. When he gets back to the police cruiser, he leans his head back for a moment. From the parking lot, the housing authority's building stretches upward and blocks out the sky.
He notices the silhouettes of people pass in front of the car and flits his gaze back down. He turns the ignition and hears it rattle. He feels eyes on him, but they quickly avert themselves and focus on other things when he tries to meet them. He shows no animosity toward the people here, but he knows what the car he drives looks like, and he can hardly blame them.
He drives down a few blocks before radioing in that he had seen Filip Inaros, safe and sound and with his mother. He knows there's more to it than that, but he does his best to let it rest for the time being. He needs to think.
A few pretty justified traffic stops and routine patrols later, Jim finds himself back at the precinct. The paperwork and turning in is usually the most dull, tedious part of a shift, but this afternoon he feels something tight and tense behind his ears and along the side of his neck. He glances at the brass nameplate on the Captain's door. He bows his head a little and scratches lightly at the back of his head as if to make less of himself as he passes it by.
He doesn't know what he's hoping for – a lifeline, maybe – when he walks into the empty break room and feels like he's hiding for several minutes. It feels like a long time, and his gaze flits to the sound of the door knob turning.
A woman walks in, curly hair piled and tied to the back and top of her head. She caries a stack of papers backed by a folder and looks for all the world like an administrative worker. Her clothes don't belie her rank at all, her badge concealed somewhere along with her weapon. She looks tired and lost in thought, too, when she nods a greeting to Jim. She slides by him to get at the copier.
“They don't pay someone else to do that for you?” Jim asks mildly when he notices her feeding page by page to the machine – sometimes on the glass, sometimes through the top tray.
“They might,” she allows in a pleasant, dubious hum. She places one of the originals back into its original pile, held protectively to her side. “But sometimes I just need to feel it.”
“The copier?” Jim scoffs, and for the briefest moment he feels the normal, almost airy detachment from the outside world that belongs here. He knows from experience and hearsay that copiers are among the world's most-reviled machines. He can remember hearing his mom complain loudly at one of them, and it's no different here.
“The work,” she says, and just like that the daydream is gone.
Jim frowns. He remembers why he has been avoiding taking the next step, and he glances sidelong at the woman's face. He wonders if she would know – if she's the lifeline. He tries to adjust his posture so he appears a little more casual, but it's hard to do when she's in plain-clothes and he's still wearing his uniform.
“Yeah, about that...” he segues, and he knows that he at least has her attention from the look he gets. He lets it stay on him for a moment, trying not to wince. “Let's say you—Are you ever in a situation where you're undercover and you meet someone and... you know what the book says you should do, but you're not sure of the best way to handle it?”
The scowl he gets as a reply is cutting and lasts long enough for the copier to stop making its rhythmic, high whining churn of a sound. The detective collects her copies and stares Jim down. He's pretty sure she doesn't blink.
“My job is all about making decisions on the fly. Trying to keep my integrity while I do it,” she says. He can hear the 'but,' before she utters it. “But what did you do, Holden?”
“Nothing,” he says, already holding both hands up in loose surrender, about the level of his shoulders.
“Uh-huh,” she says with every inch of her voice and frame. She raises her eyebrows, whole body turning to challenge him without a word.
“Nothing,” he repeats. “... Not yet.”
He hadn't thought it was possible for her eyebrows to shoot up higher, but they do.
“What's her name?” she asks, pointedly.
Jim's stomach tightens a little more than he expects for it to. He feels like he's been punched but not hard enough to take his breath. He inhales through it, but he feels his own brow screw up into an expression of something resembling hurt. He blinks at the woman in front of him.
“What,” he says softly, not a question.
“Tell me I'm wrong,” she says. She shrugs and drums the fingertips of her free hand along the counter-top where a really worse-for-wear coffeemaker sits.
“It... is a woman,” Jim answers cautiously. He wonders how she does that, but it's in her title. He sees the look of recognition registering across her face and he lifts a hand and his index finger to try and forestall it. “But,” he insists, “it's not like that.”
He is met with rolling eyes.
“It never is, but it always is,” she says. “This is why I think we should probably place a moratorium on male detective work, but no one listens to me,” she says with only a tinge of dry humor. She sighs, rolling right past it. She looks down and shifts her weight a little as if to find a more comfortable place to plant her feet. She looks up at him with a cocked head. “Fine,” she says. “Tell me how it's different this time,” she says.
“It's not just about the woman,” Jim says. His brow stays tight as he tries to explain it. “It's about her kid...”
“Her kid?” the woman asks sharply. Her fingers drum hard against the counter-top.
“Yeah,” he said. “Welfare check. She's... going through a break-up, I think. The kid's father called it in.”
The knit of his colleague's brow isn't exactly reassuring. Neither is how long it takes her to say anything. He can see thought and worry that he doesn't think he's earned with the information he has given her playing out behind her eyes.
“The father, huh,” she murmurs eventually. She finally meets his eyes. “Jim,” she says, cutting past any formality in a way that feels gently scathing. “This is above your pay-grade. It's not your job to psychologize what's going on between these people.” She clears her throat softly, glancing off to the side but only for a second. “No offense, but you're not a detective. And you're sure as hell not a social worker. And I know I'm not one either, so that's as far as it goes.”
Jim watches her for a moment before sighing and letting his shoulders slump.
“You're right,” he allows, reluctantly.
A hand on her hip.
“But?”
“It's just... there's got to be something—”
“Something you can do?” she asks, almost cutting off his thought. She clicks her tongue softly and shakes her head. “It's a dangerous road to walk down, Officer Holden.” She shakes her head a little. She looks at him, her eyes sad, compassionate maybe. “Whatever you do, you're already in too deep. And it's been – what – six hours? I've seen some bad decisions made by cops who care, but wow.”
Jim shakes his head, and then his posture finally manages something that is a little bit like defiance.
“No,” he says softly. “I'm not in 'too deep' because I finally see... something that isn't just me enforcing laws and rules that – maybe they make sense, maybe they're necessary – but that never touch any of the people I'm supposed to serve with anything but... fines and criminal records.”
“Wow,” she repeats after a moment. She lifts her hand – only one – in a placating gesture. She reaches toward his shoulder, but she doesn't touch him. “Look, I get it. The idealism wears off.” She sighs for him, and he can tell. “But that doesn't mean what you're doing is worthless. Keep going. Work your way up. Do what you're supposed to do and get where you're supposed to be,” she says, each step making sense when spoken in isolation. “And if that's... not this line of work...” she adds more discreetly.
“Hey,” Jim protests lowly, too. “Don't... Don't do that. Just... give me something I can work with,” he bargains. For a while, he thinks she's finished playing, but finally she shrugs high and looks at him.
“Fine,” she says. “You want to play it through. Do your job as a mandated reporter but make sure it gets to the most... interestingly biased ears... I think I can get you a name.”
Jim can't imagine what she means, but he knows it's what he wants to hear.
“Thank you,” he says. He thinks about it for a moment more and nods, feeling more resolved. “Thank you,” he repeats, reaching out and touching her shoulder in a companionable, appreciative way.
She nods curtly.
“Yeah,” she says. “Your job on the line. Don't say I didn't warn you,” she says, but there is at least a hint of dryness in her tone. “Go,” she orders with a nod. “I'll text you,” she says, and somehow that feels like a more illicit promise than it is. He finally leaves the break room, relieved but wondering why.
It is evening, nearly dark when another firm, rattling knock interrupts the silence. Naomi feels her heart start to pound in her chest again, and this time she knows there is more to be afraid of. The knock isn't just efficient and loud, but it continues with an intimidating insistence that demands that someone answer it. She stares at the door as if she could will it away, but there are probably more things than fists to worry about on the other side. Her phone falls from her hand, scowling at job search websites and financial aid office pages forgotten. She places it on the coffee table, but then she thinks better of it and straightens enough to push it down into her pants pocket. She might not have time to call anyone – and who would she call?
The police officer from earlier comes to mind, but in her experiences with the police, they weren't prone to taking requests.
She turns her attention to Filip. He stirs in response to the noise, and for the first time the rattling sound makes her angry as well as afraid. For almost an hour, her son has been lying on his back on a blanket at her side, his chest and round belly rising and falling in peaceful, silent slumber. She can tell he is waking, and she hears Camina's thudding, determined footsteps coming through from her bedroom. She makes a decision and picks up her son, coaxing him against her chest and hoping against hope that somehow he will go back, remain asleep through this. She strokes the back of his head with her fingertips and shushes softly into his ear, starting to shift her weight in a rhythm on her feet.
Camina opens the door to her own apartment. In her loose, sleeveless top, Naomi can see the rope of tense muscle running along the back of her arm. She is ready to try and single-handedly keep the men on the other side of the door at bay. Naomi can't help thinking it's brave but stupid. Guilt wells in the pit of her stomach, deeper still, because she has put someone in this position. Maybe there was a time when she might have been able to say that it was mutual – that they'd have been willing to do anything for each other just because of who they were, but time and boys and men and streets and neighborhoods and school and distance and being girls here had slowly built a wall that only desperation had torn down. With startling efficiency.
It still makes her feel like she owes far more than she can repay, especially with a baby to protect held tight in her arms.
There are two men at the door, both instantly recognizable. One wears looser clothes while the other carries himself with an air of diplomatic dignity in spite of all the noise, all the posturing outside that she knows Camina's entire floor is now aware of. They know they've put everyone on alert. They just don't care.
One is a boy she's known since high school. He stands to her right hand and seems to be the one whose fist had been engaged with Camina's door and its frame. The other is a man whose frame and voice and stance are so familiar that they're as much a part of her as the little boy held to her chest. She swallows a thick, fast, sickening rush of saliva that floods her mouth in place of words.
“Let me see her,” Marco orders Camina conversationally, as if his mere approach doesn't speak of aggression, of a threat.
Naomi knows better now. She feels like the floor is drawing at her feet, her knees, but she keeps the latter locked tight.
“Don't you mean 'him'?” Camina challenges.
“'Him'?” Marco asks. Naomi hates how he sounds like he's trying to be polite. She hates it for a lot of reasons.
She sees the quick tilt of Camina's head, the dubiousness visible even from the back.
“Well, I guess I could mean the cop you gave my name and address. Or I could mean your son,” she says pointedly.
“Ah,” Marco intones. Naomi sees past Camina – the way he rolls his shoulders in something smoother than a shrug. He pockets his hands. The way he's dressed, it looks like he could have been planning on going to church instead of across town to shake down his ex in the name of their son. “And would either one of those things be necessary if we had just talked like calm, mature adults?” he challenges her like he means to educate her.
Camina snorts with disgust.
“Get the hell away from me,” she orders, but it isn't a desperate demand. It is an expression of contempt with no fear behind it at all.
“I didn't come to see you,” Marco points out. Then he lifts his hands. They touch at the palms and align along each finger. He makes a gesture to point with both index fingers. It is so slow and deliberate that it looks almost innocuous, but something about it looks familiar. It hums at the base of Naomi's skull that it looks like a child – using fingers for a gun. “I came to see Naomi,” he says, and in spite of everything her feet move by a step when he says her name, only to plant firmly onto the floor.
“And she doesn't want to see you or she'd be in your apartment, wouldn't she?” Camina asks, but Naomi barely makes it out. He has caught her eyes, and even if it is for an entirely different reason than it used to be, she can't look away. She knows with increasing clarity that this is something she can't simply run from. She can try, but he has something on her. It's the reason he still looks at her like she is the only person – the only thing in the room.
She feels her skin crawl. She feels the warm squirming against her chest. She notices the garbled sounds Filip makes, and she wonders if they mean excitement.
She is afraid they do.
He hears his daddy's voice, calm and controlled after the storm outside has passed.
She wishes she could tell him in words that the storm hasn't passed. It's just looking for a way inside.
She barely gives herself allowance to blink.
“Naomi,” Marco prompts.
Camina glances back over her shoulder.
“Go into the bedroom, Naomi,” she tries to insist.
Naomi glances back in turn, but then she looks at the other woman and shakes her head. She is met with a look of near-offense.
“I'll talk to you, Marco,” she agrees. She glances over at the couch. She is aware of the faint electronic heat in her pocket. She takes a few steps forward. Marco steps back but only to hold out his arms for his family. She is glad Camina is standing between them. “But talking's all I'm doing.”
Marco's shoulders slump a little, but he keeps his arms held up and out. Everything about is movements looks like a performance now. He is vibrant, charismatic, but none of it looks like anything but a performance to her now.
“Baby,” he coaxes, drawing out the word in a way that seems too pointed to be around other people, “don't be like that. I came all the way over here to see you. I want to clear this up.”
“And that's why you called the cops,” Camina points out, but she makes way just a little, slow and cautious in her movement. Her arms fold, but they don't stay that way. She stretches them, keeping them loose and apparently ready to move.
“Exercising my right as a concerned parent,” Marco points out, finally giving Naomi a respite from his prying eyes with a glance at Camina.
“I bet,” is all Camina says in response.
“Let me see him,” Marco says more than asks as Naomi gets a little closer to the doorway. She shakes her head and backtracks a little, holding Filip tighter. She sees the registry of the response all over Marco's face. He is angry, cooler toward her without moving or changing his tone at all. “He's my son,” he points out.
“Your baby,” Naomi snaps, correcting his address of her from before because she can't help it. “And he's... your child, but...”
“But,” Marco warns her, almost casually.
“But the life you're living – the life you've been living,” with her – but not anymore, “isn't safe. It isn't right for him, and if you want to call the police I'm sure there's plenty I could tell them about that.”
She notices the bristle in movement from their – Marco's – silent friend at his side. There is a calming gesture from Marco, and he doesn't move. For all the world, he could have been a trained soldier, listening only to one man. She doesn't know why she didn't see it before.
“Are you playing with me?” Marco asks her, giving her every opportunity to say 'yes.'
She shakes her head in a simple enough reply.
He sighs, very heavily. He closes his eyes.
“Just come home, Naomi.” He blinks his eyes open again and looks at her, anger seemingly abated. “We can talk about this there. There's no point bothering our friends with stuff we should be working out together for our family.”
“Our 'family,'” Naomi snaps back at him, “is built on lies you told me. For years, and I—” she says, but the words die in her throat. She's afraid to say them, but more than that, she's so angry that she sees white for a second.
“Naomi,” he snaps, as if saying her name again and again will change it. “I'd like to say hello to my son,” he tries.
She shifts Filip's weight in her arms. She notices the way he cranes his neck to look at Marco. She knows if she lets him shift around very much that he will probably reach for him. Her stomach knots itself and turns in her belly. It is one part of this that makes her feel like a monster – and there are more, too. She can't tell him yet – she can't explain the lies she has told her baby, unwitting and complicit. He is too young to understand that there is anything in the world but truth, and she has lied to him so completely that he wants his daddy. Her eyes burn and she blinks fast.
Decisively, she shakes her head.
“No,” she says. “We can... we can discuss it later,” she says, placating when she doesn't mean to. She hates it and wishes she hadn't said it, but she keeps going. “But for now, you need to let the answer be 'no.'”
She isn't looking at him except in the periphery of her vision when he shifts his stance, his entire posture. She recognizes the hiss of breath, the snarl of anger. She could give him the same, but for now fear overrides it.
“Fine,” he says, so fervently that it really does sound magnanimous, like he could give up their son happily and in a heartbeat. Like she has convinced him. He even backs away, and she hears the creak of the floor in the hallway. “You want to play it that way?” he demands. She glances up at him and notices the visceral change in the way he carries himself. Her heart is pounding again. She glances down at the hip and side of the man beside him. Marco's clothes are so well-fitted it would be hard for him to be carrying, if not impossible. His friend, on the other hand.
The fact that she even thinks it is crazy, and she knows it. She can't undo the last years of her life, though, so all she can do is take a defensive step backward, to hold her son tighter to her. She can hear the sounds of him starting to blubber more urgently, edging toward crying. He senses it, even if she cannot tell him. His mother is afraid.
The tension defuses abruptly, and he is already walking away when she hears the words of hushed conversation drift back toward them. The word 'bitches,' is used multiple times and in creative and casual ways, almost making it sound like a fairly standard word of address. Camina slams the door purposefully, power and determination visible through her stance even as she locks it down. Naomi can't help but smile a watery, weary smile. A frightened smile that she shows to Filip as she holds him up, swings him gently in her arms, holds him tight, walks with him, and does everything she can to stop him crying. Everything but the one thing she can't do.
He huffs and splutters in exhaustion against her shoulder later. She has almost won him back to sleep and murmurs affectionate words into his ear, along with an apology.
“I'm so sorry,” she says, and she only hopes the words will still hold their meaning when he fully understands them. “I'm so sorry that Mummy is afraid...”
Natural light floods through the office and reflects a little harshly off the interior pane of glass that makes up part of the wall of his little office. Amos squints against it. Even the paperwork he is looking at seems to shine too bright. He squints at it and keeps filling it out. He won't shut the blinds, though, because he once had a kid tell him that it made it dark and scary. So he doesn't shut the blinds anymore except in desperate circumstances.
He looks up, still squinting but this time part of it is a glare as someone casually knocks on the door frame, unannounced and without an appointment. He looks beyond a stack of manilla folders on the corner of his desk and through a dusty moat of light to see a uniformed police officer standing there with a friendly smile on his face. Amos doesn't return it.
“Can I help you?” he asks in a tone that clearly indicates that he is busy and has little interest in helping.
“Yeah, I'm... I'm Officer Holden,” the man says. He steps over the threshold and stretches out his hand to offer it to Amos. Amos keeps his dominant hand working on the paperwork and doesn't reach up. He just looks a little higher this time to meet the man's eyes.
“And you're here without an appointment. Talking to me,” he says in response.
“Uh... yes,” Officer Holden says as he withdraws his hand back to his side. Amos looks up and eyes just how close his hand hanging casually at his side is to a gun. He files it away, the same way he always does.
“What do you want?” he asks, ticking another appropriate box.
“I was given your name by—” Officer Holden starts to respond, but Amos looks back up. He rises from his chair, to his full height, and picks up a few folders from the shorter stack on the other side of his desk. He uses the movement to circle all the way around Holden's back in the space, placing the stack of folders heavily in a cheap little plastic basket near the doorway. He goes back behind his desk, but he doesn't sit down.
“Just do you know,” he says, “I ain't in the business of taking bribes from cops. Didn't think I'd get your kind at CPS, but if you pulled something with some chick you think'll talk and that I'm gonna help you out or look the other way because—” He gestures wordlessly to his own shoulders and the build that flows down from them as if it is a clearly comprehensible explanation, “I'm not your guy.” He looks back down and turns the completed side of the form over. He gives a half shrug. “And you've got the wrong department.”
“Whoa,” Officer Holden says, informally and delayed. He seems to have struck a nerve. Amos lifts his eyebrows, but it's with interest more that Officer Holden is still standing there talking than anything else. “First of all whoa,” the officer continues, this time as if he is trying to slow Amos down. “Second, that is not what I came here for. That's—” Officer Holden spares himself finishing that sentence. “I'm... here about a child welfare case,” he explains, switching back into something that Amos recognizes as a professional tone. “And I was given your name as a guy I might want to talk to if I was... serious about trusting my gut.”
Amos isn't surprised that often, least of all by cops. There are good ones, bad ones, and ones that don't care. They're just like other people except they usually don't hide their weapons and power. The one thing he likes the most about them is that they're really transparent people – not hard to figure out in a moment or two. This time, though, Amos realizes that maybe he looked too fast.
He lifts his eyes without distraction and appraises Officer Holden more carefully this time. In spite of his pretty-boy, iron-happy appearance, his eyes don't have the almost drunk-sober thirst for attention and power that Amos had half-expected to see there. Maybe so much that he'd imagined it. Looking closer, he sees wide-eyed, embarrassing innocence for a man Holden's age.
He sighs and feels weight push down on his shoulders. He recalibrates himself and hooks his thumbs in his empty belt loops.
“Okay,” he says, cautiously. “I'm listening,” he explains, not bothering to hide that he hadn't really been doing so before. “What can I do for you?”

Dear Ellen,
I hope all is well with you!
I know you are busy but I wanted to take a moment to try and share my story with you - as I have said before on this blog, I know there are causes more worthy than mine but I think my story is important nonetheless because I’m sure there are many women other who have a similar story.  So here I go...just to give you a quick idea of who I am, my name is Pia and I am a 28 year old German / American citizen who lives in a tiny German village on my own (well not completely, I do have a 10 year old rescue pug named Benny & a 19 year old rescue persian named Emerald Anastasia von Cuddlesworth - aka Aunna or Aunna Banana). I grew up a military brat and don’t really have a home town, I was born in Lebanon, TN but didn’t stay there long -- in fact, I’ve never lived anywhere longer than four years so I don’t really have a ‘home town’. My family and friends are spread out around the world, with my closest relatives being an hour and a half away and my parents being at least two flights away in Gallup, NM.  I originally started this blog only as a fundraiser for a service dog to help me with my newly diagnosed auto immune disorder but as time has gone on I hope to have it serve a higher purpose as well; I want to raise awareness for a couple of things...
1. I want to help spread the word about the rare auto immune disorder that I was diagnosed with (more on that below) so that others who might be suffering with this disorder can get answers too. I also want to talk about life with an invisible disability / chronic pain or chronic illness. So many people suffer silently or face back lash when dealing with something that others can’t see. It’s time to end the stigma against invisible chronic illness / chronic pain. Just because you cannot see it doesn’t mean it isn’t there - we must all remember to be kind for “everyone we meet is fighting a hard battle”.  2. I am also a domestic abuse survivor and I want to let anyone else who is stuck in an abusive relationship (whether it is verbal abuse and manipulation, physical abuse, or both) know that no matter what life throws at you - you deserve to love yourself, to protect yourself and to fight for yourself... 3. I want to talk about Gender (and other) Bias in medicine because it is a VERY real issue that needs to be addressed! So here is a little more of my story... On June 5th 2020, after 2+ years of searching for an answer as to why I was sick and in pain all the time, I was finally diagnosed with a rare auto immune disorder called ANCA Vasculitis, or antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis. ANCA Vasculitis is the name of a group of autoimmune conditions characterized by the inflammation of the blood vessels caused by the immune system mistakenly attacking them. There are several types of ANCA vasculitis and the exact cause (genetic / environmental / etc) is unknown, so patients diagnosed with ANCA vasculitis may display varied symptoms. The disease affects about 1 in 50,000 people. Due to the generic symptoms many of us have (chronic pain, sore throat, cough, cold and flu like symptoms, headaches, etc.) this disorder is often over looked. Many people don’t receive a diagnosis until something major has happened (organ failure for example). This disorder can be deadly if left untreated and too many women (and men) have symptoms like the above brushed off...especially if they have a history of mental illness or are dealing with a lot of stress as I was;
I first started searching for answers to my growing health concerns in 2018. I had just moved from Germany to Scotland to start my life over - I was finally leaving my abusive spouse with the help of my amazing parents - I had my first “grown up” job with Hilton Corporate and was going to work and get my Masters Degree (I have a BA in Anthropology and was hoping to get my MSc in Animal Welfare Science, Ethics & Law at the University of Glasgow or at the University of Edinburgh). I was so excited to start over! So excited that I may have pushed the trauma and emotional scarring of my abusive marriage down for the first few months I was there and everything was peachy. Of course, those moments of bliss could not last forever. Still, I was settled in a new country (which BTW I had never even been to Glasgow prior to moving there) and I felt relatively safe for the first time in over a year - here my spouse could not find me or hurt me. I began seeing a therapist to help me unpack the trauma of my past. Of course, I was worried what people would think - as I’m sure you can imagine my spouse’s version of why we were getting a divorce was very different from mine so I tried to keep everything as quiet as possible. I didn’t want to deal with any backlash because, in his eyes, as always, everything was my fault. It wasn’t the fact that he had wanted to kill me at one point - nooo that certainly wasn’t why I was leaving (sarcasm) - In his eyes it was because I wanted an older man or because I just wasn’t willing to try to fix things...(even though I was the one who had suggested marriage counseling in the first place). It wasn’t the fact that he’d isolated me or cut me off from our finances. No, nothing was ever his fault... Even now, when I no longer have contact with him or his family I am afraid... This is the first time I have openly spoken about our marriage and divorce and as I have begun to tell my story I’m terrified that he’ll try to contact me or that I will receive backlash from him or his family (I am sure many of them would take his side and call me a liar...). I am speaking out now for two reasons - the first was because I only think it is fair and right to be completely honest about who I am and how I ended up where I am now if I’m going to be asking  my family and friends for financial assistance and two because I want to help others who are or were victims of abuse. When I finally came out with my story a friend contacted me and told me she had been through the same type of situation with her spouse and it was a really lovely moment - we’d both been suffering in silence for fear of back lash but had now found each other.  Anyway, back to the matter at hand... The first symptom I had was pain, chronic pain all over my body. My back, legs, arms, knees, ankles, feet, wrists, you name it - it hurt - and it kept getting worse and worse. I was having to take pain killers every day just to get to work and come home. I was extremely tired, no matter how many hours of sleep I got (6, 8, 10...) I was always tired. Then I started having headaches that would last for hours, then for days, then for weeks. I started to feel like I had a cold (on good days) or the flu (on bad days). My throat was sore, my voice was hoarse, I was congested and then I started having night sweats or trouble controlling my temperature (freezing even though the heat was on and the electric fire place was going). When I spoke to my doctors about my concerns it was written off as stress, depression, or anxiety. Whenever someone in the office I worked in got sick (you know how it goes around in an office environment) I would get sick too... my co workers would feel unwell for a few days, I would feel unwell for weeks. I then got strep throat but the doctors said I’d be fine with a few days rest. A few days went by and it turned into bacterial tonsillitis. I had to have multiple rounds of antibiotics. Then I had a stomach infection that lasted for over a month, a cough that lasted for months (November 2018 - March 2019). At one point I was coughing so hard I thought I would pass out. I coughed till I puked. I coughed till I pulled a muscle. My blood work kept showing elevated levels of inflammation / signs of an infection but since doctors didn’t know why they told me it was probably just fibromyalgia (something which shouldnt’ be diagnosed until all other possible causes have been ruled out). The rheumatologist in Scotland said there was no cure but I could do yoga, meditate, and maybe take an anti depressant... I felt like I was dying - I didn’t understand how I could feel so sick and no one seemed to take me seriously or care. A year and a half later (June 2019) I decided to move back to Germany - Brexit was looming and I just wasn’t happy in Glasgow anymore. Everyday was a struggle, my bus commute to and from work often took an hour and would leave me in so much pain I could barely get up off the couch at the end of the day. Plus work was not happy with all of the sick days I’d had to take. Keeping in mind that I felt sick everyday and I only took sick days when I had a high fever or wasn’t able to talk or walk.  My parents lived in Germany at the time so I found a job where I could work at home in Germany and moved back in hopes of finding answers.  A few months after moving back to Germany my parents sadly had to go to the US so I was once again alone in a new area. In November 2019 my cough returned and I was sick again with an unexplained “upper respiratory infection”. Once again I was put on multiple rounds of antibiotics which didn’t help - To make things worse I am allergic to almost all cough syrup and since I was working in a call center I was off work sick. The cough lasted till mid January this time and I lost my job. Work “understood” that I was going through a tough time and “felt horrible” for letting me go - they said I could reapply when I was “healthy”... and to top things off, my emotional support animal of 8 years, my baby girl Biene (a 11 year old Australian Cattle dog), my rock and constant companion, was then diagnosed with cancer and passed in December of 2019.  I have to admit that these have been some of the hardest moments of my life... I have felt like such a failure and disappointment. I was an adult, I was supposed to be married and adopting kids (I’ve never wanted biological children due to my health issues), I was supposed to be getting my masters degree and leading a successful career, I wanted to travel and I wanted to be a source of positivity and happiness in the world... but instead I was broke, alone, grieving, depressed, anxious, and continuously sick... I have had to rely on my parents financially and have felt like a burden...I wanted to give up...but I kept fighting. Life gives us new reasons to keep living. I had a few great moments, I was blessed with a few opportunities for travel and have enjoyed those moments. I have great friends and family who continued to support me and who told me I was not a burden on their lives, so I kept fighting. I felt like my new German doctor wasn’t taking me seriously and once again was chalking everything up to stress and then later to grief (over losing my dog). So I found a new doctor a little further away and she listened to me - for the first time in a long time I felt like I had seen a doctor who actually cared. She helped me get in with a rheumatologist and she advocated for me. She agreed that my blood work constantly showing elevated levels of inflammation / infection - for over a 2 year period - along with me constantly feeling unwell wasn’t something to just be ignored but was an important symptom. While she had no idea what was wrong with me she was determined to help me find answers.  In May I finally went and saw the rheumatologist - at first I thought all hope was lost, in our very first meeting she said to me “ I don’t think there is anything wrong with you”. She had barely looked at my paperwork and had barely listened to my symptoms. They sounded too generic for her...she didn’t think ti could be anything “rheumatic”... I was so young... It was probably stress... I’d heard it all before; but still she did her job, she ran the tests and a month later I was suddenly called back in for another appointment. My blood work showed what I had known all along - that I was sick - that I needed help and she admitted that she’d been wrong.  It’s only been 12 days since I was finally diagnosed but its been a roller coaster of emotions for me - relief and validation - fear and anger and sadness... my life has so not gone to plan. I have struggled with depression and anxiety since I was 12 and the added stresses of the instances above, and the near constant pain (both emotional and physical) have not helped, but I refuse to give up. I’ll be completely honest with you, some days I don’t even know why - some days I only fight because I love my dog and cat and friends and family and cannot leave them. Other days I fight because I have dreams not yet realized.  So, yeah, I started this blog because I hope to raise enough money to get a service dog (and this is still a major goal of mine) but I hope it will become something more. My friends and family have been so generous during this difficult time for all of us and have donated what they can. So far we have around 700.00 raised of the 10,000.00 euro goal. Reaching the 10,000 euro goal seems nearly impossible ... at least it seems impossible without help...but I have faith.   If you have taken the time to read all of this I want to say THANK YOU. I know your time is precious (as is everyones and I appreciate it). I was wondering if you could share my story? Help me raise awareness about ANCA Vasculitis and other Chronic Illness? Help me raise awareness about domestic / emotional abuse and how it may seem impossible to overcome, but it is not and help me raise awareness about Gender (and other) bias in Medicine? I have a few posts here on my blog that talk about bias in medicine and I could provide you with a 100 different stories from men and women who are constantly battling against this bias to try and get help... and maybe , just maybe you could help me save up enough money to get a service dog? Within my blog everyone can find information on how a service dog could help me, how to donate, and more information about ANCA Vasculitis / Gender Bias in Medicine & I will soon be posting information for victims domestic abuse. Thank you so much for your time. I know that was a lot.  Lots of love from Germany,  Pia
P.S. I promise to pay it forward someday when I am in a better place. In case you’d like to know what some of my dreams and goals for my life are:  To adopt / foster / rescue / help animals in need. To adopt or foster children one day (If I can).  To help further civil rights movements like BLM and to help LGBTQ+ youth. To help further clean living and reduce waste.  To be a light for others who are suffering.  To perhaps one day own a bed & breakfast or cat cafe.

Class training can be effective in encouraging socialization and play with a peer group. Classes are often offered at a more affordable rate and can cover both problem behaviors and teach new skills. Classes can range from puppy and beginner training to more advanced training and skill training such as performing tricks or therapy work. "Ethically" speaking, what is the best way to go about getting and caring for a pet snake? (i.e. The argument "snakes shouldn't be caged" do you ever encounter this scenario? What do you think?)
Ethics are a tricky subject when it comes to animals in captivity, because we could ask ourselves wherein lies the ethical basis of keeping ANY animal, be it a snake or a fish or a bird or a selectively-bred and now domesticated descendant of a wolf, particularly if our reasons for keeping said animals have no basis in conservation or research. There is somewhat of a quandary between loving an animal and wanting to be near it, and understanding that my very presence is unnecessary to the welfare or happiness of that animal and that my keeping it near me to make me happy could even potentially harm or stress and therefore degrade the quality of life of that animal.
So looking at this from an animal welfare perspective, let’s say we’ve accepted that we’re going to keep animals and we’re going by the societal opinion that it’s okay to keep them as pets and breed them to be companions and we’re not considering the ecological or ethical ramifications of keeping another living thing in captivity for its whole life simply to please ourselves. We’ll use this basis as our platform for this next part:The best way to care for a pet snake is by learning and meeting the needs of that snake. All snakes need a few basic things that can be branched into many less basic things:1. shelter2. food and water3. the ability to thermoregulate4. the ability to partake in species-specific typical behaviors5. enrichment that invites them to partake in less-typical behaviorsUltimately we should be considering the species we’ve selected as our companion and work towards providing an environment for them that meets all of the above to a minimum standard of that which their non-captive counterparts would be afforded. In short, we have to do AT LEAST as good as nature and ideally much, much better. This means learning about your species: Looking at photos of or visiting their native habitats, knowing their diets, behaviors, and habits, and anticipating the changes in their needs that will take place as your companion grows and develops and ages. You will need to prepare for caring for this animal to the best of your ability for the duration of the animal’s entire life, including medical attention in the event of illness or injury and senior care. All of these things should be considered and prepared well in advance of even starting the search for your companion.
Once you are ready to care for the animal, the next part comes from humanely and ethically obtaining said animal. Ideally, rescue is the way to go. There are many reptile companions who were cute and tiny gifts for children that swiftly became smelly and/or defensive burdens on the parents of the giftee. If you are not able to find a companion with a local rescue, the next option would be to support ethical breeders who provide a high quality of life for their breeding animals and who breed for the love of the hobby and not just for profit. Many are the ball python breeders who invest in high-end morphs to keep them in tiny bare tubs, powerfeed them to a minimum breeding weight, and churn out clutch after clutch of eggs in hope of making a fortune. Many are the pet store chains that purchase bottom-dollar clutches of factory-farmed low-value snakes to turn out to the uneducated impulse buyer. In the rare case that you select a species as your companion that is not readily bred in captivity, you should consider carefully the ecological ramifications of choosing a wild-caught animal. Will you be able to acclimate the animal to captivity? Will you be depleting a natural habitat? Will the animal be imported in a way that may be unnecessarily risky or harmful? Is the person harvesting the animals from the wild doing so by legal and ethical means? Your responsibility as an ethical snake keeper is to ask questions, do research, and give your money to someone who does not use it to further the causes of negligence or abuse. In summation, I do think it’s perfectly ethical to keep snakes and other exotics in captivity and I encourage others to do so, provided we are all willing to learn, keep learning, and understand fully the responsibilities involved in keeping any animal. We should as a reptile-loving community challenge each other to be our collective best, and to provide what our reptile companions need to thrive and not just survive.

Sarasota nonprofits focus on babies’ first 1,000 days
Ambitious Sarasota County initiative will embrace all babies
Every day in 2017, an average of 10 babies were born in Sarasota County — half of them to parents who could not even afford the price of bringing them into the world.
Each of these five babies came into the arms of a single mother who earned less than $22,311 a year — or perhaps joined a family of six surviving on less than $61,000 annually. Such thresholds — 185 percent of the federal poverty level — qualify a woman in Florida to have Medicaid cover her health care costs during labor and delivery. At Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s maternity ward, the only one in the county, this stark fact of life applied to 51 percent of all 3,564 newborns last year.
Of course, babies in low-income households can and do thrive, while those more comfortably situated are not immune to setbacks. But this stubborn pattern of economic disparity suggests that a given pair of babies born on the same day in Sarasota are likely to leave the hospital on vastly divergent trajectories. And when they meet again — perhaps in kindergarten, when the maturation process in their brains is about 90 percent complete — they are liable to begin their formal educations armed with such radically different vocabularies and capacities for comprehension that they might as well be growing up on opposite ends of the planet.
It’s a harsh dichotomy that Kelly Romanoff calls “unacceptable.” As projects manager for the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, she has worked for the past year to assemble a coalition of 32 nonprofits, foundations and government agencies in service of a new campaign, First 1,000 Days Sarasota County. The partnership, after an official launch this Wednesday, will seek innovative ways to support local families during a child’s most critical period of development — from conception through the first two years of life.
Within this small window of time, children learn to distinguish sounds, recognize a face, scoot across a room, put words together and make early sense of the world, forming neural connections in the brain that will determine habits of perception for the rest of their lives. First 1,000 Days efforts are built on the premise that babies deprived of proper nourishment and stimulation, or exposed to toxic stress at levels that damage their fragile brains, are being failed not only by their families, but by the larger support networks designed to protect them.
“This is a problem that can be solved,” Romanoff says. “While the families face many obstacles, as a whole our resources in this community are so abundant, that by just bringing everyone together, closer, and inviting people to invest in the work that’s being done, we can really get access to these families and help mitigate so many of their challenges.”
While the scope of the dilemma is complex and daunting, local collaborators believe they can make significant headway, for two reasons:
• Everybody loves babies, and feels responsible for their welfare.
• Research has shown that, allowed time and space to develop fully, the mother-infant bond is so powerful that a woman can overcome such hurdles as poverty, addiction, trauma and social isolation in order to give her child a life far safer and more nurturing than her own has been.
‘I have feelings’
Sarah Guinn is one of the lucky young women to find that time and space, but she had to go to jail to get there.
Cradling her 5-week-old son Carter against her shoulder and locking him into a loving laser-gaze, she tells her story: After years of addiction, she was shocked to discover she was pregnant. Determined to get clean for her baby, she called three detox facilities and was rejected by all of them. Finally, she says, she turned to her probation officer — and asked for the urinalysis she knew would prove she had violated her probation by using illegal drugs. After more than 100 days in jail, going through withdrawal, she obtained a court-ordered referral to First Step of Sarasota, a partner in the First 1,000 Days project.
For more than 20 years, First Step’s treatment and education program has offered behavioral therapy, parenting and nutrition classes and 24-hour support from counselors, along with residential care for the baby’s first months of life. Formerly addicted mothers can study for a GED or take vocational classes to get ready for what comes next. Because residential facilities like this are rare in Florida, mothers come from all over the state. Along with child-rearing skills, they learn how unwise it can be to return to former routines, so Sarasota County is often where they choose to make a fresh start with their babies.
Kyley Flores is hoping that she and her 3-month-old daughter Audra can find a place at Our Mother’s House, a Venice housing program run by Catholic Charities. Her long-term goal, she adds, is to open her own nail salon.
“I know it won’t be easy,” she says. “But I already had to do a lot of hard things, and make a change in the kinds of people I associated with.”
Guinn isn’t sure yet what comes next for her and Carter; she lost her apartment and job in Polk County when she went to jail. But it was worth it, she insists: “He’s awesome. He’s the reason I did everything.”
First Step clinical director Nancy Page has seen women respond almost magically to the methodical encouragements they receive at the center, after enduring the social judgment that convinces other struggling mothers to give in to old habits. When they see their babies born drug-free and at a healthy birth weight, she says, they are motivated to forge a more disciplined and grounded family life.
“I feel great,” Guinn says. “I hadn’t been more than a day sober in eight years, and now I have feelings. I want to be the best mom I can for him. When he was born and they put him on my chest, I just stared at him. I didn’t know what to do.”
Page, who has been in the field of recovery counseling since 1992, does not underestimate the current opioid epidemic’s implacable force. But she will testify that a natural maternal instinct can be just as irresistible.
“If you talk to our clients, they say it was a game changer for them,” Page says. “They give credit to being pregnant for saving their life. You know, these are people who are broken in some way, emotionally, spiritually. They’re doing the best they can, and it’s become a way to numb out from what’s going on, until you get to somewhere you can feel you don’t have to hide. Then they learn to care more about another living being — even if they can’t see or touch it, but they can feel it — than they do their drug of choice.”
Prabhu Parimi, director of the Maternal, Fetal & Neonatal Institute at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, is a specialist on what happens when a woman cannot resist her addiction long enough to deliver a drug-free baby. Parimi will speak in Sarasota Thursday at a fundraising luncheon for Healthy Start, another partner in First 1,000 Days Sarasota County.
“Not very many OB’s” — obstetricians — “are willing to take those mothers who have been on medications. They don’t want to deal with this patient population,” Parimi says. “The consequence is that we as a medical community aren’t doing the right thing. That’s a broken system. Consequently, mothers don’t seek prenatal care. And then they deliver premature, low-birthweight babies.”
These newborns are not addicted to medications; rather they have been exposed to them in ways that are known to stunt fetal development. When the birth is premature, Parimi explains, the problem is compounded because growth that should have occurred in the womb takes place in a disruptive artificial environment. On top of these factors, he says, is one just beginning to be more fully understood: toxic stress. According to a recent New York Times Magazine article on the notoriously high mortality rates for African-American infants and mothers, toxic stress is suspected to be a determining cause in their problematic pregnancies.
“It’s an emerging area of interest,” Parimi says. “That’s why we are invested in caring not just for the babies but also the mothers. Cortisol” — the hormone that floods a body under stress — “has been shown to change the type of bacteria in the gut, and there’s a connection between the gut and the brain. So if a mom has been subjected to these psychosocial stressors, the baby acquires this abnormal microbiome. That means if you disrupt normal microbiota through a number of different mechanisms, it may affect an area of the brain.”
Stress — the constant companion of women living in or near poverty — is also known to affect cognitive development in infants. Anything from sudden loud noises to unaddressed hunger can bathe the swiftly forming brain in cortisol, prompting a fight-or-flight response similar to the effect of trauma in more mature brains.
“Robust prenatal care is an important component” in mitigating these stresses, Parimi says. “At least we can take two things out of the equation: a low birth weight and being born premature.”
But even when free prenatal care and education services are available, evidence shows that something prevents a significant share of mothers from obtaining them. According to a 2015 study of pregnant women covered by Florida Medicaid, 14.7 percent of them had no prenatal care until the third trimester, and 6.1 percent had no prenatal care at all.
A jigsaw puzzle
At Sarasota Memorial, the women who show up in active labor with no prenatal medical records are sometimes referred to as “walk-ins.” In 2017, according to data shared by the hospital with the Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County, there were 300 such cases — 8.4 percent of all births. The numbers are preliminary, but already they show a disproportionate share of single and African-American mothers.
First 1,000 Days Sarasota County has identified this group of mothers as its starting point, reasoning that they represent the most severely missed opportunities to make life dramatically better for babies. Working groups have formed to interrogate the available records on these worst-case scenarios, and also to meet with Medicaid analysts at the state level to understand what keeps women from seeking and getting prenatal care.
“We’re not going to guess at this,” says Bill Little, a former Sarasota County deputy administrator and longtime director of the county’s department of health. “We’re going to look at the data.”
This is the first time such an ambitious collaboration has been tried here, and it’s part of a nationwide wave of attempts to rethink conventional approaches to prenatal and baby care — largely in response to the devastating opioid crisis that is overwhelming social service systems and endangering children at every age. Responses look different in each community, but the national 1,000 Days movement frames it primarily as an issue of malnutrition, in the womb and for 24 months after birth. This emphasis was inspired by a 2008 Lancet report documenting how undernourished girls and women pass on the effects of physical and cognitive damage to generations well in the future.
There’s also a state-level operation, which concentrates on highlighting legislative priorities and fostering collaborations among agencies across Florida. The coalition will hold its first-ever summit this September in Palm Beach.
In some ways, the local initiative is blessed from the start. Sarasota County has an unusually vigorous network of public and private agencies that can support mothers and infants. But the system can be opaque — and sometimes forbidding — for women whose challenges include poverty, substance abuse, language barriers and distrust of authority. Studies show that while these women want the best for their babies, they can be easily deterred from asking for help.
The loose structure of agencies and health care providers positioned to help low-income pregnant women resembles a jigsaw puzzle, where the interlockings are tenuous at best, with crucial pieces missing here or there. For many of these mothers, it is as if they are approaching the puzzle from its nether side, and cannot see the picture at all. So they are reduced to pressing blindly on whatever piece is nearest at hand — which may or may not yield to their specific needs.
Once they fail to find help, it’s easy to stop trying.
For women who are undocumented, addicted or fluent in a language other than English, health care providers say, it’s even easier. Nicholas King, a psychosocial case manager at Sarasota Memorial, says that of all the barriers to prenatal care — which can range from a lack of transportation to cultural differences — difficulty understanding the Medicaid system is the one he hears about most.
Judy Cavallar, clinical manager of the labor, delivery and mother-baby units at the hospital, says that women who cannot take time off from their jobs — or can’t afford to — rely on Sarasota Memorial’s 24-hour emergency obstetrics center when they have an issue, even though some local obstetricians do keep regular evening hours.
“Patients that are facing whatever those barriers are,” she adds, “are good people. They want good outcomes for their baby and they want to gain the knowledge they need to bring home a healthy baby. The challenge is trying to navigate through a health care system that isn’t easy to navigate through. Having prenatal care allows you to have a relationship with a doctor who is going to see you after you deliver, so that relationship continues.”
Cavallar is enthusiastic about one early component in the First 1,000 Days project: embedding two patient navigators at the hospital who will work with mothers before and after delivery. The navigators will be a consistent friendly presence, demystifying the health care safety net and steering new families toward the community services they need.
“I keep going back to the word relationship,” she says. “A lot of these patients just are afraid. If I’m a drug-dependent mom, then maybe when I do go to the hospital they’re going to take my baby away. A lot of these patients don’t have the support systems they need to make good decisions for their baby.”
One example of this navigation model was recently put in place at Johns Hopkins All Children’s, where Kathryn Wooten serves as nurse coordinator at a new clinic for drug-exposed newborns. Established to complement a similar clinic started five years ago at the hospital’s Sarasota site, the program recently received a $2.5 million gift that will allow both locations to delve more deeply into research on fetal drug exposure. At the St. Petersburg clinic, Wooten serves as an initial and continuing contact for all mothers in the program.
“The focus for so long has been: ‘What are these moms doing wrong?’” Wooten says. “We villainized them, and I think it’s shifting.”
Wooten confesses that as a nursing student who trained at All Children’s, she had a few judgmental remarks to make about women whose careless choices damaged their newborns. Then a coworker invited her to visit a drug rehabilitation center.
“It just blew me away,” Wooten says now. “When you hear these moms’ stories, you realize that: ‘Oh my gosh; if I had made one decision differently in my life, that could be me.’ If I had been through a tenth of the things some of these women have been through, I don’t know if I would be here. The fact that they’re out there and surviving is so impressive.
“For the ones that do decide that they want to try to go through recovery, so much is required of them, and they’re working so hard for their babies — I think it’s our moral obligation to support them.”

polyvore was being a pain in the ass no matter how many words i tried to censor so here’s the life update i meant to put in that set
- have been living in a somewhat stable housing environment for almost a year and four-ish months now which is WILD and a huge record break for me.
- kind of have a partner? we're def QPPs and have been nomadic vagabond companions since like 2015 and have been sleeping in the same bed, cuddling, making life plans together hardcore since then. when i try to explain our relationship to others i explain that we are like Bert and Ernie from sesame street. it's not romantic but it's definitely a very serious thing and there is nothing i could forsee that would face our future that would not be faced together as companions. i was kind of chatting with a buddy the other day who was asking abt stuff and i was mentioning how an aphobe asked, 'how is this different from a best friendship, why do you need to call it a queerplatonic relationship?' and my instinct was to be all, 'well idk i mean i think most best friends don't stick their tongues in each others mouths' but like that said, some best friends do that and its totally legit but the main difference is we call it this because it is more accurate to the intricacies of our relationship.
a best friendship implies different things and a QPR is what we have been calling ourselves for some time.
- have come across the term alterous attraction many many moons ago and have concluded that more or less, this has been the basis for all the experiences of 'attraction' i have thought i felt in other categories. turns out i just love being pro/miscuous and cuddly and affectionate with people and it doesn't necessarily have to have any of the other attractions present. it's just an expression of my alterous attraction. and idk it just seems to make way more sense. someone said it was a commonplace for pre-questioning lesbians to make up to themselves crushes on boys with calculations involved about why this person is attractive.
i think maybe i do experience other forms of attraction but they're seldom enough that it's more anecdotal. and i'm going to call them crushes anyway bc it doesn't matter what i say or do - people are going to be confused by me and who i am and i shouldn't have to sacrifice the nuances involved in who i am and how i live my life to try and get smaller minds to understand it.
and nobody has to understand either. i don't even understand. that's heckin ok bro
- i've been on them 'ro/ids (testosterone) on and off for three months in spring/summer 2016 (androderm) and then the injections for some amount of time this year and there's been a lot of body changes. but mainly i'm looking at nu/des of other people on hormones and realizing like... what if I'm actually inters/ex? it makes no sense for my di/ck to be bigger than people a year on hormones in half the time, does it? like what's up there? and my body is signif hairier in a way that is noticeable to me and my QPP.
last week when I got the inje/ctio/n the nurse (who is a really nice lady? like smiley very friendly maternal type) asked me "how did you know?" without other context or anything.
I didn't really know how to begin because honestly no one had ever asked me that before and it's the one question I needed somebody else to answer back when I was like, 15/recently 16 and needed help finding myself. I wished future me could visit past me and tell me like, "hey jsyk this is what you concluded, here's the answers, and here's all the stuff I've realized about our past experiences that were actually Signs that you're #genderqueer"
and I think, another thing, I wish I could have told the past me, that the laws were going to rapidly change in my lifetime, and also to avoid any cis person who suggests therapy "for hormone starts" because that's what led me to like, 2 years of rather unhelpful talk therapy that turned into lowkey conversion therapy.
No one should ever make you write a sob story about your past before they allow you the autonomy to make decisions about your body.
I gave a little backstory of timeline and told her how my mom kept saying things like, "why are you so offended at the idea of being a woman?" etc and how we don't speak anymore, how I came out in 2011 and every day for the longest time I had to explain to other trans people who the heck I was. how my nonbinaryness was seen more as a delusion despite the fact that I found the wikipedia pages and message boards and I knew there were other people like me out there. I didn't know of another #nonbinary person until 2013 and even then I only met them in passing at a panel they hosted. (we ended up roommates for a bit around 2016 but that's another story)
I stopped having to give #genderqueer 101s to the LGBT+ community around 2014.
And I feel like after that Laverne Cox paved a lot of way for us, and Facebook started putting other genders on there (which I'd signed petitions for years before and considered to be a hoop dream)
and there's been corrective r/a/pe I've gone through and so many tears I've cried and sui/cide attempted and hospital visits
and things are definitely still horrific and I can never afford groceries. I don't eat enough to sustain myself and live on welfare and am too medicated and disabled to work and have tachycardia and PTSD and other complications of my own forced resilience
but I'm on testosterone or whatever and I look at the changes that have gone on and I know that I was a part of that
but I'm never going to get credit for it and it pains me how much I'm suffering because I started advocating earlier than the majority of trans people out today.
if I had come out to my mom years later, would we be speaking?
it doesn't ultimately matter, because if we kept speaking I still would have ended up d/ead. coming out and having her react like that, topped with her steal/ing from me when I was homeless, years of sui/cide baiting, physical + emotional + etc a/buse my whole life, it's miraculous I ever made it out alive
it's so painful but I just have never had the privilege of choice.
- I've been thinking to go back to school maybe and that I need to actually go at it full force with passion because I think I have gotten way too down on myself for the results that have come from my own halfa/ssery of it all. And my own procrastination etc.
I wish I had access to medical care as a child or counselling or something more than I ever did have because maybe I would have excelled in school instead of suffered to try and keep my head above water. I mean, I graduated honours (equivalent).
there's too much about my life to be angsty about.
- also idk if i mentioned this but i got ar/rested for protecting indigenous folks at a thing and it was in the news and im not going to talk much more on it bc of privacy but i'm happy to dig up the video of the pol/ice dragging me away and the crowd shouting (and gendering me right ;u;) "LET THEM GO, LET THEM GO" and i was a pathetic mess thru the whole thing and just had the wrong emotions the whole time and like 3+ reporters tried to get a hold of me for interview but I forwarded them to the indigenous leaders of the ceremony instead
we prayed inside the arre/st tent and put down tobacc/o and held ceremony and the c/ops were horrible and took so much personal offence to everything we were and every reality that happened that they wanted to deny. they banned us from the public land we were arrested on and it was horrible.
it was in the news and justin tr*deau showed up for a photo op and the organizers weren't allowed in their own tipi. he wasn't invited.
those with the land claim to the area made an official statement welcoming us and condemning the go/vernme/nt for arrestin/g us.
nothing was ever done about that bit other than them releasing us and i went to the hospital the next day to get my wrist checked because i couldn't really use it and the handcuf/f bruises and the bruise on my knee was massive. it's been two months and it's only now faded.
twitter blocked the image of us in the a/rrest tent holding hands in prayer with the hand/cuffs on our wrists. they said it contained "sensitive content"
tumblr did the same, calling it "NSFW" (weird bc literally photographs of my actual na/ked body with links to where u can buy videos of me jerkin is not labelled NS/FW automatically lol?????)
i asked tumblr to review that and they still labelled it as such.
it's just so blatantly a genuine broach of free speech and freedom of religion. it was a crimi/nalized religious ceremony and i got between the co/ps and a woman praying.
- i saw Against Me! in march and the mosh pit was extreme and I fell down at some point and like seven people pulled me up and that and the getting arre/sted thing has really hecked up my knees ! i feel like they're mostly healed since but i've not even been kneeling on my mattress for even a second to make sure of this. otherwise it's just been sudden pain for months but as i said, i think they're a lot better now.
- i came forward abt a pr/edatory ex and a few others of their victims came to me to say that they had gone through the same and that they were even more pre/datory than had been with me. i lost quite a lot of friends in the matter bc what i accused them of was extremely serious and came across as vicious on my part.
i'm going to take it as alright though, because i know that i've put what i said out there, and if they have read it at all, they can at least have these ideas in their mind going forward and take precautions. this ex was confronted publically and directly on social media about it and there were several witnesses and screenshots i had to things they did and said. i'm hoping that serves as some kind of warning for them, about their actions that they have confessed to with several people, and how these things will come back for them. that they cannot evade accountability, that i am a force of nature and if you wrong me or do a wrong in my witness with no remorse on your part or apology, i'm not going to let you live it down.
i care and i am tired of hearing horrible stories about them from others. others who came to me saying that i had been painted as an abus/er. because i know ! people see me standing up for myself as threatening all the time. they worry they aren't allowed to make mistakes around me.
no matter how many times i say it or prove it, there's always those people who are too cowardly to admit when they do make mistakes and who go to great lengths to protect their pride and entitlement.
i know we are all growing. i seek environments of mutual support and growth. i am now in a phase of life where i am not giving the time to people who have no interest in these environments. anyone can be my friend, if they are ready for it. but i don't owe it to anybody and anything wrong i have done i am at a point where i feel like i am in touch with my own humility.
and if someone tries to milk it because they think my vulnerability isn't also strength and something that comes with at least some ferocity... well, that's not my problem.
- my rabbit Snicklefritz is doing fine. he's shedding like the dickens this season and mischievous as usual but hopefully one day I can afford to make him an enclosure again and I can let him out only when I can keep track of him.
he's ruined a lot of sketchbooks and a lapdesk my QPP got me for the winter holidays that we are both heartbroken about.
- I am trying to become less attached to material belongings and it has helped me a lot when it comes to coping with all the sentimental items left with my mother or in the various times I've been homeless or left exes etc over the years.
My memories are in my heart and not something that needs to be placed externally, in an item.
Have also trying to go zero waste (like, becoming someone who produces no garbage, just recycling and compost) and it's really been noticeable all these small differences. I buy way more bananas, lettuce, etc. And I've been making bread and spaghetti and whatnot and having windowsill gardens.
- I'm not cured of anything or whatever and I'm angsty 24/7 and broke as heckaroo but there's enough of The Little Things In Life (gardening, youtube videos, kisses, etc) to help me get by in the meantime.
- three days ago a friend (who I consider(ed) chosen family) I had purposefully cut out of my life a year ago showed up on my doorstep to tell me I was right about everything and to apologize for all the wrongs. That they reread conversations we had around then and that they have grown and grown into a better place. They were 18 then and 19 now. We were from the same hometown and they're still there but moving to my city in December. I missed them so much and they stayed with me a few days. I feel a bigger sense of home in this city knowing they're going to live here soon too.
- I've been Really Intensely looking thru my DNA and geneology stuff since last winter. For some reason Indian (like, South Asia) shows up in my DNA and some southern Europe/Northern Africa/Middle East kind of region. My father was adopted via a stepdad and I figure this comes from his bio dad. Or maybe it doesn't, I don't really know. My maternal haplotype is supposed to be one that's generally found in African populations which throws that whole theory. My mom and me also had to use hair picks (afro picks) when I was growing up because our hair was so naturally thick and the waves really tangled up. Every time we went to get my hair cut in that white rural town the hairdressers would comment how they'd never seen such thick hair before etc. I'm still struggling greatly to find answers because everybody's last name is phoenetically weird except for my dad's mom's line which has an extremely Cornwall last name and anyone with that name is definitely part of that family.
Doing research to find what I was told growing up (that I was Kanien'keha:ka via my maternal grandmother's grandmother) has been very difficult because I'm not sure which grandmother of hers it was, and one of them seemed to remarry several times and I cannot be sure of any of the surnames being a maiden name. It's also really hard to know what the spelling was supposed to be because it was written phoenetically. But I think that one's likely English anyway. The other one I haven't reached yet but my grandmother's father's father seemed to be from a Metis community outside a reserve where I remember being told we had ancestors. It seems we're descendants of some really famous anglo Metis folk. I've not figured out the specific links to lock the names all into place properly in my family tree but it's the surname and the small community that are an exact match and on the message boards.
It's a lot to think about. I've been struggling with my racial identity for a long time and regardless of nuances and ethnic identity I feel like I'm just doing this research to seem special or more interesting or to branch out my activism. DNA is not ever going to tell me who my ancestors were, just the locations a small handful of random specific ancestors lived. Family trees are going to help, but they're not going to help me too much as someone who doesn't actually have blood family I'm in contact with really.
I might see if I can get in touch with an older cousin I have on Pinterest because she seemed to be the only one (besides my younger cousin) who really ever sent me vaguely kind gestures after I came out. She was the only one who seemed to be supportive when I did my grandma's eulogy. (Aside from my sibling who went up with me. But I don't speak to my sibling for other reasons.)
I have a paternal cousin as well but we're more half-cousins as my dad's mom had a few different men in her life and I don't actually know if he does have full bio-siblings. I don't really know if it's worth it to reach out to her because with all the technicalities and separations and adoptions and half-relatives I don't know whether I can ask her to ask around, or if I can just ask her, or what.
Anyway whatever it's just easiest to explain my ethnicity as being Metis because talking with others and stuff it seems like maybe this is the best way to label myself, to explain my complicated history and acknowledge that my blood ties are not what makes me me, but rather my ethnic ties. I have traditions and beliefs and ancestors I'm reconnecting with and trying to find.
Not all my ancestors were great people. But it is interesting as heck to learn about them. (Especially seeing pictures and some of the weirder resemblances from like, 5th great grandparents.)
Also one of my greats of grandparents crossed the US-Canada border several times in his life and near the end of them the border agent wrote "seems odd" on the thing and I haven't found any explanation for why he was crossing the border either lol which is pretty dang interesting imo.
- anyway idk I think I'm good ?? have been getting a lot of new interests and hobbies lately which feels good, feels right
i'm getting muscles because of them hormones and probably eating healthier or whatever and drinking more water and just livin life as best i can
could use some more dollars however but what can u do when welfare doesn't go up to match minimum costs of living haha :)

THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL, THE APOSTLE, TO THE CORINTHIANS - From The Latin Vulgate Bible
Chapter 9
PREFACE.
Corinth was the capital of Achaia, a very rich and populous city, where St. Paul had preached a year and a half, and converted a great many. See Acts xviii. 10. Now having received a letter from them, (chap. vii. 1.) and being informed of divers disputes and divisions among them, (chap. i. ver. 11.) he wrote this letter to them, and sent it by the same persons, Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus, who had brought him their letter, chap. xvi. 17. It was written about the year 56, not from Philippi, as it is commonly marked at the end of the Greek copies, but rather from Ephesus. The subject and main design of this Epistle was to take away the divisions among them about the talents and merits of those who had baptized and preached to them, and to settle divers matters of ecclesiastical discipline.
Chapter 9
The apostle did not make use of his power, of being maintained at the charges of those to whom he preached, that he might give no hindrance to the gospel. Of running in the race, and striving for the mastery.
1 Am not I free? Am not I an apostle? Have not I seen Christ Jesus, our Lord? Are not you my work in the Lord?
2 And if I be not an apostle to others, but yet to you I am. For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.
3 My defence with them that examine me is this.
4 Have we not power to eat and to drink?
Notes & Commentary:
Ver. 1. &c. Am not I free? The apostle in this place wishes to teach the Corinthians, how careful and solicitous they should be not to give cause for scandal to their neighbour, and how anxious for his spiritual welfare, informing them, that as he refused to take even what he had a just right to, as a minister of the altar, that is, to live by the altar, so they must do in like manner, abstaining even from things lawful, for the good of religion. (Estius) --- Am not I an apostle? &c. St. Paul here, to the 20th verse, answers those reflections, which the new preachers at Corinth made against him and Barnabas, as if they were only an inferior kind of apostles. To this he answers, that he had seen Jesus Christ, who appeared to him. He tells the Corinthians, that they at least, ought to respect him as their apostle, who had converted them. He tells them, that when any persons ask about his apostleship, he has this to say for himself, that he not only laboured as an apostle in converting them, but also laboured without taking of them what might supply him and his companions with necessaries, as to meat and drink. He insists upon this particular circumstance, to shew he did not preach Christ for gain-sake; and at the same time brings seven or eight proofs to shew that he, and all who preach the gospel, have a power and a right to be maintained with necessaries by them to whom they preach. 1. He had a title to be supplied with necessaries, as being an apostle. 2. And by them, as being their apostle. 3. By the example of a soldier, who has a right to be paid: of a husbandman, who has a right to partake of the fruit of his labours: of a shepherd, nourished by the milk of the flock. (ver. 7.) 4. He brings the example of those who threshed, or trode out the corn by oxen, as it was formerly the custom, that the threshers, nay even the oxen, when treading out the corn, were not to be muzzled according to the Scripture, (Deuteronomy xxv.) but were to eat, and to be fed with the corn or straw; much more men that labour, are to be fed with the fruit of their labours. (ver. 8. 9. 10.) 5. Nothing is more reasonable than to supply those with corporal and temporal things, who labour to procure spiritual and eternal blessings for others. (ver. 11.) 6. They who preached to the Corinthians after St. Paul, were maintained by them; had not he and Barnabas as much right as they? (ver. 12.) 7. He shews it by the examples of the ministers and priests in the law of Moses, who had a share of the sacrifices and victims offered, and who, serving the altar, lived by the altar. (ver. 13.) 8. He brings the authority of our Saviour, Christ, who said to his apostles, (Matthew x. 10.) that a labourer is worthy of his meat, or of his reward, as it is said, Luke x. 7. But St. Paul puts them in mind, (ver. 15.) that he did not make use of his right, as to any of these things: that he does not write in this manner, to get or have any thing of them hereafter: nay, he makes warm protestations, says St. Chrysostom,[1] that he will take nothing of them; that he will preach without putting others to any cost; (ver. 18.) that he will accept of nothing, lest thereby he put any obstacle to the gospel, or gave any person occasion to say he preached for gain. He tells them, it is better for him to die, than, by taking any thing of them, to make void this, which he has to glory in, and to justify himself against his backbiting adversaries: the sense is, that he is willing to spend his life as well as his labours among them, sooner than in these circumstances receive any temporal reward from them. Yet when the circumstances were different, he received of the Philippians (Philippians iv. 15.) enough to supply him in his necessities. He also tells them here, that he does not pretend to glory of boast for having preached: this being a necessary duty. --- For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward. The sense seems to be, if I do this office cheerfully, and with a right intention to please God only, I shall have a copious reward prepared for such a labourer: if unwillingly, and imperfectly, and not with a pure intention, I cannot expect such a reward; though still a dispensing of it is entrusted to me; that is, it is always my duty to preach. Others, by willingly, understand the doing of it in so perfect a manner, as not to receive any thing, and unwillingly, when they would scarce do it, at least so zealously, unless they received what would maintain them. (Witham)
Note 1:
Ver. 1. St. Chrysostom, om kb, p. 382. meta sphodrotatos arneitai.
5 Have we not power to bring about a woman, a sister, as well as the rest of the apostles, and the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?
Ver. 5. It appears certain, from the testimony of the fathers, that St. Paul was not in the state of wedlock. St. Jerome informs us that the apostle is here speaking of such holy women who, according to the Jewish custom, supplied their teachers with the necessaries of life, as we see was done to Christ himself. It is evident from ancient records that this was a very prevalent custom in Judea, and therefore a cause of no scandal; but to the Gentiles this custom was unknown, and therefore lest it might prove a cause of scandal to any, St. Paul did not allow any woman to follow him as a companion. Tertullian denies, with St. Augustine and St. Jerome, that St. Paul is here speaking of his wife. (Estius; Calmet) --- A woman, a sister.[2] Some erroneous translators have corrupted this text, by rendering it, a sister, a wife; whereas it is certain, St. Paul had no wife, (chap. vii. ver. 7. 8.) and that he only speaks of such devout women, as according to the custom of the Jewish nation, waited upon the preachers of the gospel, and supplied them with necessaries. (Challoner) --- And to what end could he talk of burthening the Corinthians with providing for his wife, when he himself clearly affirmeth that he was single? (Chap. vii. v. 7. and 8.) This all the Greek fathers affirm, with St. Augustine, do op. Monach. chap. iv.; St. Jerome, adv. Jovin. chap. xiv. &c. &c. [Also see annotations on ver. 25, below]
Note 2:
Ver. 5. Mulierem sororem, adelphen gunaika. Sororem mulierem, where Estius brings examples to shew that it is the same sense and construction, whether we read mulierem sororem, or sororem mulierem. Tertullian, the most ancient of the Latin fathers, read: mulieres circumducendi, not uxores. De pudicitia, chap. xiv. p. 566. Ed. Rig. and lib. de monogam. chap. viii. p. 519. he first says, Petrum solum invenio maritum.
6 Or I only and Barnabas, have we not power to do this?
Ver. 6. No explanation given.
7 Who serveth as a soldier at any time, at his own charges? Who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? Who feedeth the flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?
Ver. 7. No explanation given.
8 Speak I these things according to man? Or doth not the law also say these things?
Ver. 8. No explanation given.
9 For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?
Ver. 9. No explanation given.
10 Or doth he say this indeed for our sakes? For these things are written for our sakes: that he that ploweth should plow in hope: and he that thresheth, in hope to receive fruit.
Ver. 10. No explanation given.
11 If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great matter if we reap your carnal things?
Ver. 11. Is it a great matter? The apostle is here speaking of what he had given to the Corinthians, and what he had received from them; and this he does under the comparison of the sower and the reaper. Can any of you think it hard that we receive some part of your temporal goods, when we have bestowed upon you spiritual: nevertheless, we have not used this power, but we bear all things, &c. (ver. 12.) (Estius)
12 If others be partakers of this power over you: why not we rather? Nevertheless, we have not used this power: but we bear all things, lest we should give any hindrance to the gospel of Christ.
Ver. 12. no explanation given.
13 Know you not, that they who work in the holy place, eat the things that are of the holy place: and they who serve the altar, partake with the altar?
Ver. 13. No explanation given.
14 So also the Lord ordained, that they who preach the gospel, should live by the gospel.
Ver. 14. No explanation given.
15 But I have used none of these things. Neither have I written these things, that they should be so done to me: for it is good for me to die, rather than that any one should make void my glory.
Ver. 15. No explanation given.
16 For if I preach the gospel, it is no glory to me: for a necessity lieth upon me: for wo is unto me, if I preach not the gospel.
Ver. 16. It is no glory. That is, I have nothing to glory of. (Challoner) --- If I preach the gospel through compulsion, fear, or mere necessity, having no other means of maintenance, I must not look for a reward in heaven; but now doing it through charity and freely, I shall have my reward from God; and the more abundant the charity, the greater the reward. (St. Augustine, de Op. Mor. i. 5.)
17 For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation is committed to me.
Ver. 17. But if against my will. That is, if I do not do it with alacrity and zeal, but instigated by the sole motive of punishment, woe unto me, as he says in the preceding verse, if I am instigated by this motive alone; still the dispensation of the gospel is entrusted to me, and I must comply with that obligation, either with the zeal and alacrity of a son, or for fear of punishment, as a slave. (Estius)
18 What is my reward then? That preaching the gospel, I may deliver the gospel without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.
Ver. 18. No explanation given.
19 For whereas I was free as to all, I made myself the servant of all: that I might gain the more.
Ver. 19. Free as to all. That is, whereas I was under no obligation to any man, yet I made myself the servant of all, &c. (Calmet)
20 And I became to the Jews as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews.
Ver. 20. I became to the Jews as a Jew. That is, upon occasions, not to hinder their conversion, I practised the ceremonies of their law; though I am not under their law, which is no longer obligatory, but only under the new law of Christ. (Witham)
21 To them that are under the law, as if I were under the law, (whereas I myself was not under the law) that I might gain them that were under the law. To them that were without the law, as if I were without the law, (whereas I was not without the law of God, but was in the law of Christ) that I might gain them that were without the law.
Ver. 21. To them that were without the law. That is, to the Gentiles, who never were under the law of Moses. (Witham)
22 To the weak I became weak, that I might gain the weak. I became all things to all men, that I might save all.
Ver. 22. no explanation given.
23 And I do all things for the gospel's sake: that I may be made partaker thereof.
Ver. 23. How convincing is this and many similar texts against those who deny the merit of good works, and who would not have men to act with a view to any recompense, though rewards and recompenses are very frequently mentioned in holy writ. (Haydock)
24 Know you not that they who run in the race, all run indeed, but one receiveth the prize? So run that you may obtain.
Ver. 24. Know you not? Nothing is more famous in the annals of history than the public games in Greece: it is to these the apostle is here alluding. (Calmet) --- All run indeed, &c. He brings the examples of runners and wrestlers for a prize in the Grecian games, where only one could gain the prize. It is true in our case many obtain the crown for which we strive, but every one is in danger of losing it, and so must use all his endeavours to obtain it. (Witham)
25 And every one that striveth for the mastery refraineth himself from all things: and they indeed that they may receive a corruptible crown: but we an incorruptible one.
Ver. 25. He refraineth himself, &c. Curbs his inclinations, abstains from debauchery, or any thing that may weaken him, or hinder him from gaining this corruptible crown, how much more ought we to practise self-denials for an eternal crown?
In the fifth verse, where we translate, a woman, a sister, or a sister, a woman: the Protestant translation has a sister, a wife. We have reason to reject this translation, since it is evident by this epistle, that St. Paul at least then had not a wife, chap. vii. ver. 7. 8. And the ancient interpreters expressly examined and rejected this translation. See St. Jerome against Jovian. lib. i. tom. 4. part 2. p. 167. edit. Ben.; St. Augustine, lib. de opere Monach. tom. vi. chap. 4. p. 478. Nov. edit. The Greek word, as every one knows, signifies either a woman or a wife. Nor doth any thing here determine it to signify a wife. He speaks of a woman, or of women that were sisters, that is, Christians; so that a sister expounds what kind of woman it was. Dr. Hammond puts in the margin a sister-woman, as it were to correct the Protestant translation. (Witham)
26 I, therefore, so run, not as at an uncertainty: I so fight, not as one beating the air:
Ver. 26. No explanation given.
27 But I chastise my body, and bring it into subjection: lest, perhaps, when I have preached to others, I myself should become reprobate.
Ver. 27. I chastise, &c. Here St. Paul shews the necessity of self-denial and mortification to subdue the flesh, and its inordinate desires. (Challoner) --- Not even the labours of an apostle are exemptions from voluntary mortification and penance.

Dogs look for leadership from their owner. Indulging in bad behavior such as nipping, begging, stealing from the table, barking, etc. are all bad habits. Do not make excuses for these behaviors and do not allow a pup to develop unpleasant behaviors. A trained pup will become a trained dog and those who come in contact with your pup/dog expect good behavior. Do not tolerate jumping, growling, snapping or nipping. This behavior must always be corrected so it is always seen as unacceptable to the pup/dog. 35.99 SIGN UP for our newsletter Podcasts All other time is SUPERVISED free time, spent socializing, relaxing and bonding with the family and so on.
