Friday Fright Flick: A Nightmare On Elm Street 3 -Dream Warriors (1987)

During a hallucinatory incident, young Kristen Parker (Patricia Arquette) has her wrists slashed by dream-stalking monster Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund). Her mother, mistaking the wounds for a suicide attempt, sends Kristen to a psychiatric ward, where she joins a group of similarly troubled teens. One of the doctors there is Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp), who had battled Freddy some years before. Nancy senses a potential in Kristen to rid the world of Freddy once and for all.

It's the weekend again and sure enough you're back in a video rental store. That strange aura from before still lingers. In fact, it feels much stronger now.

a nightmare on elm street 3: dream warriors is maybe the second silliest installment in the franchise. no, the third. but it's more glaring than in the other instances because a large part of the movie is very good, making the bad & horrible really stand out. people love to shit on freddy's dead: the final nightmare, which i take issue with because i love it but also because that's silliness with purpose and coherency! dream warriors can't quite decide what it is, doesn't entirely embrace either horror or lighthearted fantasy. wes craven's original script was quite dark and you can still sense that in much of the movie, but the other side of it is kind of a feel good, group effort little fantasy, which isn't necessarily a bad thing! but it's a weird contrast. of course i still love dream warriors a lot regardless of its faults, and it has some of my favorite scenes in the franchise (my very very favorite scene of this film is when nancy's father says he's sorry for all that he has done before transforming into freddy and stabbing her as they embrace). heather is amazing as nancy as always, i love that she was working with kids with the same problem she had, she had a good chemistry with patricia arquette and i really enjoy their scenes together. arquette makes a good final girl, and i think the movie should've focused on her and nancy instead of a whole group. some of the dream sequences are really great too. i don't know, i love it but i do wish craven was holding the reins. also, i always delete the skeleton fight from my mind and it's such a baffling surprise every time.

tlb characters as horror franchises

michael: friday the 13th. i’ve always thought that michael would be a huge friday the 13th fan, he’d just love that basic slasher format. overall though michael’s a pretty simple guy, and early on the friday the 13th film are pretty simple movies, so i think it’s the franchise that fits him best. if i had to pick one movie from the franchise to represent him it would be friday the 13th part 2.

star: nightmare on elm street. this is probably cause star reminds me a bit of nancy, and also alice from noes 4 + 5. i don’t think that star would actually like these movies, i feel like she wouldn’t be a huge slasher fan, but i think she fits in well with a lot of the teenage noes main characters. if i had to pick one movie from the franchise to represent her it would be nightmare on elm street 3: the dream warriors.

david: scream. so i actually think david would hate the scream movies, but i think the amount of character drama in them is very representative of his whole vibe. he could definitely be like, a red herring for who ghostface is that gets killed like 30 minutes into the movie. if i had to pick one movie from the franchise to represent him it would be scream (2022).

dwayne: halloween. truth be told i haven’t seen a whole lot of the halloween movies, but they’re like THE classic horror franchise which is why i picked them for dwayne. i could see him liking the first movie a lot, but i doubt that he’d ever watch any of the sequels. if i had to pick one movie from the franchise to represent him it would be halloween (1978).

marko: child’s play/chucky. maybe this is cause i’m a chucky fan and marko has probably been my favorite of the lost boys as of recently. but i think the weirdness and creativity of the chucky movies really fit with marko’s character. if i had to pick one movie from the franchise to represent him it would be child’s play 2.

paul: evil dead. i’ve only seen the first evil dead but i DID pick this for paul based on evil dead 2 and army of darkness and what i know of those movies. that sort of silly goofy horror is something that i think really fits his vibes, and i think that out of all of the lost boys paul is the one who is the most of a horror comedy character rather than just straight up horror. if i had to pick one movie from the franchise to represent him it’d be evil dead 2.
