BOOK REVIEW: A SINGLE SHARD
Tumblr media
A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park Historical Fiction Number of pages: 152 Rating: 5 - Amazing - one of the best books I've read Reviewed by: Tyler
A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park describes a man named Tree-ear making pottery with a master, Crane-man. She describes the training process of Tree-ear as Crane-man’s apprentice, and the hardships that Tree-ear goes through in order to meet Crane-man’s standards. She explains the history of pottery making in Japan, and how Tree-ear deals with a tragedy. The book is incredible, and it describes a lot of history of what it was like at that time. It definitely gave me a new perspective and a new insight to pottery, and the story’s twists and turns gave me enjoyment as well. I would rate it 5 stars, and the reason is because the history behind it is just amazing to me and I found it very interesting to hear about. The way they traveled, the preparations needed for their old pottery, and the uniqueness that you see because of the industrialization of modern days is just fascinating. The book describes something that you don’t see every day, and I think that is a very unique aspect. I have never really read a book like this, and it was exciting to read and know more about history in Japan compared to now. The ending was definitely enjoyable as well, and it was so cool that there was a lesson to be learned, it was just so subtle. It also let our mind wander after the book, to predict what they were going to do next. The author made not only the content of the book amazing, but the thinking and analyzing part as well. It allowed for you to image the results and the description just images things perfectly. The book just had a lot of fun and interesting information, and it felt very educational compared to other typical books that I have read over the years.

IDW if you hire me, I will make an entire arc out of this.
Shadow is dragged here at some point, and the only rap he knows is "Talking Blues" style from the early 1900's.
A continuation of this

I love it when the cast/characters makes controversial narrative choices like Taliesin did tonight and suddenly you have all the snide "well I've never liked -insert player/character here- and this just proves it" think pieces until the next episode or until the cast gushes about how much they loved playing out that choice.

everyday im like "well i mean, the magnus protocol can't make the TMA ending worse. right? right????" and then i remember that there is a very real possibility that we find out that jon is dead and martin ended up somewhere else alone and the fact that this outcome is possible fills me with the purest dread and horror imagineable.
listen. mr jonathan jwriter sims. mr jonnywaistcoat. jonny. my guy. you cruel, cruel man. you've done it. okay? you've stricken fear into my heart. your writing has plagued me with the thought of the horrors of loss. you have made your point. i am BEGGING you to leave it at that. i wouldn't be able to deal with martin being stranded somewhere else all on his own. you can't do that to me. listen to me you CAN'T.

to YOU it's "washing the dishes" to ME it's a thrilling game of "which sentimental thing that i love and honor by using for its intended purpose of eating/preparing food will my wet hands smash onto the countertop into dozens of irreparable and sharp pieces today"

6: What is your favourite book to recommend?
a single shard, by linda sue park. it's about a homeless boy called tree-ear who's grown up under a bridge with a disabled man as his caretaker who dreams of becoming a potter. he lives on the outskirts of a village dedicated to pottery in twelfth-century korea, and the book narrates his journey in convincing an old, childless man with no son to teach his trade to teach tree-ear pottery. his journey takes him across the country, in fact, and is a sort of coming-of-age... for a homeless boy in twelfth-century korea. it's relatively short, but one of the most beautiful and touching books i've ever read, and a single shard defines the narrative. read it. it's gorgeous.

At this point I don't think anyone should take the Shard or its power. That thing has become a goddamn golden apple of discord for the Hells at a time when they need unity and cohesion, to be on the same page about what to do because the stakes are so high.
The power it offers is tempting. I get that. It would give them an edge up on Ludinus and his cronies. But if Ashton literally exploded trying to absorb the shard, what do you think would happen to any of the others? Yes, Ashton was warned multiple times not to take the power and that he physically couldn't handle it. But what would this do to any other member of Bell's Hells, if that's what it did to their member made of solid rock?
And it's a magnet for the power hungry and ambitious. Delilah has become WAAAAY more active and clearly wants it. Nana Morri, for as much as I love her and as cool as I think she is, does have her reputation for a reason, and she was VERY taken in by the Shard.
And look at the strife it's causing! Ashton, obviously, that happened. Laudna and Delilah. The pressure being put on Fearne by her friends to do something she does not want to do and has SAID she doesn't want it and is afraid of it. This thing is just taking issues that were always there for the Hells (both as individuals and as a group) and dragging them to the surface.
It cannot be worth it. No power is worth this sort of discord and physical risk, and just by having the Shard tucked away in a Bag of Holding, they keep it from Ludinus and stop him from using it. It's not much but it's something.

2ND-5 LOG 0007
There's something about the vaults. Well, I mean, there always has been. They're strange places. They're never the same twice, but you start to learn where things are, right? Or at least, I do.
But they're filled with so many things.
Uh, I've been uh - killing more things. So much in this place encourages you to kill inside the vaults, and, uh, I mean, I guess that makes sense? I mean, uh, it's not like there's anything sentient in there, except occasionally a villager, and that's - the villagers I've taken out of the vault are still... there's something... I'm still figuring that out. They've made a village, though. Iron and food and enchantments and everything villagers bring. I hope they're, uh, happier... on the island?
But uh. Been killing things, because killing them gives me - they're called soul shards. It's a funny name. Shards of soul. Do zombies have souls? Do wraiths?
The first time I heard a wraith I was confused, because it sounded like a cat. Then I was terrified, because it, uh, screamed like one when I killed it, and uh, I don't -
I have to kill a lot of them now. For a bounty. And then kill a lot of them, uh, for, for the soul shards, because I can trade in pieces of monster soul for bits of things that are useful, like a whole block of vault diamonds.
I'm trying to be able to afford, uh, getting systems up and running for storage. I don't... have much... Well, uh, actually I technically do have a lot of storage I guess. Chests everywhere. But the organization system is starting to get completely out of hand and I need help and it's just beniotite again, it's always beniotite that I don't have enough of. I'll sell my soul for beniotite. Or kill, I guess.
And I guess I, of all people, shouldn't find, uh, wraiths that scream like other animals or stealing pieces of someone's soul for a leg up all that odd, right? I mean, uh. I give away worse to the vault gods already, in some ways.
(I have an idol for Wendarr, now. I'm not sure... what I'm supposed to do with it. I may make a shrine of my own on the island. I don't... I don't know what I think. I think even without the shrine they're watching. I think...)
But. I don't know. I just - they're purple.
Souls are purple.
Who knew, right?
