Second time in a year for A Summer’s Tale. Wanted to rewatch it while I still have my special offer Mubi subscription. As with Rohmer’s Pauline at the Beach this drives away the winter blues and takes you to the beaches of France, into a place of youth, idealism, beauty. He celebrates youth but doesn’t idealise it. Gaspard is sweetly vulnerable, desperate to be a man, to be cool, to score with girls, and in doing so he muddles everything and risks both losing the girls and the very charm and sweet nature that makes him the object of their affections. He’s a romantic, a musician, perhaps old before his time with his sea shanties and folk songs. Margot is his obvious match but he’s too busy looking in the distance to see what is before him. It’s an adorable film that nails young men particularly.
