Went to NYC this weekend and I saw the play againā¦The emotions from this post are still there I assure you AND THIS TIME I WENT AT 7PM SO I GOT TO STAGE DOOR! Got to say hi to Erik as Scorp and told him he was marvelous both times and he thanked me for coming both times, + aaron bartz and I had a quick convo about his draco wig and how it suited him well LMFAO anyway fun times alwaysš«¶š»
NO CAUSE.
I just came back from seeing Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway, and let me tell youā¦
Iāve seen it once before, in 2019 (Broadway still) and the changes theyāve made⦠I LOVE IT.
First of all, they got rid of parts. So now itās only one show, lasting 3h30. That means they had to cut some of the scenes, which I donāt really mind tbh, I think itās great and doesnāt change the story that much.
Second, SCORBUS!!!!!!!! ITāS NOT OFFICIALLY CANON, BUT WITH RECENT CHANGESā¦MIGHT AS WELL BE. The scene where Albus and Scorpius are at Delphiās mercy in the maze of the Twiwizard tournamentā¦They changed her line from « I had a hard time finding your weakness Albus, itās friendshipĀ Ā» or something like that, to « I had a hard time finding your weakness Albus, itās loveĀ Ā». LOVE. MF LOVE. I saw my life flashed before my eyes, there was no way. And itās not overā¦At the end of the play, when Scorpius and Albus are talking on the staircase, and Scorpius is supposed to praise Rose and everything, and Rose finally getting a bit playful with himā¦WELL. LISTEN TO THIS: when Scorpius is telling Albus that Rose feels pity for him, and that itās a start for somethingā¦ALBUS TELLS HIM: « Is she really the one you want to be with in your kingdom?Ā Ā» OMFGGGGGGGG WHAT?????? AND THEN SCORPIUS STOPS AND LOOKS AT HIM. Then Rose (who was hiding under the staircase for all this time), comes out of her hiding place and tells them that if they keep hiding it, nothings gonna happen. AND THEN SHE GOES AWAY. NO « FLIRTINGĀ Ā» BETWEEN ROSE AND SCORPIUS.
AND THEN??????? ITāS NOT OVER.
When Harry and Albus have this heart-to-heart talk at the veeeery end of the play, Albus tells him that Scorpius is the most important person ļæ¼in his life. Harry smiles and tells him: « I like it. I like himĀ Ā». NOWā¦IāM DYING.
So yeah. Obviously the quotes are maybe not word for word accurate, but I can ASSURE you, that the key words are there. Iām fucking crying you guys.š

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
The casts so far: Draco Malfoy
The Cursed Child stage play debuted in London (England) in 2016 and has been taken to a few other places ever since: New York City (USA), Melbourne (Australia), San Francisco (USA), and Hamburg (Germany) already have their own production in place. Toronto (Canada) and Tokyo (Japan) also have plans to put on a show.
Due to the pandemic, the performances all over the world have been suspended since March 2020, but the play shall return eventually.
For Draco, it all began with Alex Price, cast in the original London production on the West End, who also debuted the role on Broadway in 2018. So far there have been 6 actors who played Draco as a 37-40 years old wizard on stage! Here they are:
Alex Price in London Year 1 (Jun 2016-May 2017) and in New York City Year 1 (Mar 2018-Mar 2019)
James Howard in London Year 2-4 (May 2017-)
Tom Wren in Melbourne Year 1 & 2 (Jan 2019-)
Jonno Roberts in New York City Year 2 (Mar 2019-Mar 2020)
Lucas Hall in San Francisco Year 1 (Oct 2019-)
Alen Hodzovic in Hamburg Year 1 (Feb 2020-)
Aaron Bartz had already been announced as the new Draco for NYC Year 3 but, as mentioned, the show was suspended near the end of Year 2.Ā
Brad Hodder was cast for the upcoming Canadian production.

cursed child broadway, feb. 23, 2020

third time seeing cc in three months for one reason: my sister is, in her words, āin love with joey labrascaā (karl). Ā she thinks heās absolutely perfect. Ā this past week iāve endured her talking about how hot he is. Ā i mean, iāve gotten quite a bit of good lily luna material for my fics now, but at what expense? did i need to know that joeyās (very mild) acne made him look handsomer? did i need to know about how deep his eyes are? did I?
i teased her about what sheād do if he wasnāt on, and she said sheād be so upset. Ā
we get to the theatre, i look at the castā¦and james romney was karl.
my sister was shocked. Ā the love of her life, who most likely has forgotten about her existence, wasnāt there for what looks to be our final time seeing the year 2 cast. Ā she was devastated.
we also got to see antoinette robinson as hermione and tom patrick stephens as ron! Ā and sarita amani nash was myrtle!! Ā and kimberly dodson as polly!!
james!karl was great and i will bombard my sister with as much james romney content as i can in order to piss her off further :)
patrick du laney was the sorting hat and aaron bartz was the station master. Ā we actually saw aaron walking into the theatre as we waited outside for part 2. Ā he definitely has the draco swagger.
anyway letās get to the good stuff!
~james snyder as harry! great as usual. i donāt think he did much differently than last time, or if he did it wasnāt very noticeable.
~diane davis as ginny ā same w james. Ā i think she held on to albus longer when they hug in godricās hollow this time?
~jonno roberts as draco: okay this guy singlehandedly inspired me to start a fic back in december (that hasā¦ā¦.yet to be finishedā¦ā¦ā¦) with how his draco and bubbaās scorpius behaved and this was no exception. Ā idk whether his mic got caught on something or if he was really bringing it all out, but when he shoves scorpiusās head against his desk in the dark world, he GROWLED the āyou do NOT use her name in vainā line ???? iāve never heard him say it like that, itās usually more of a hiss. Ā idk how to describe how he said it other than āgrowl.ā almost like an animal.
then when he said ādo it safely, i canāt lose you tooā heās looking directly at scorpius. Ā itās different from how iām used to seeing him and closer how i picture him saying it; usually heās looking away, like heās afraid of showing vulnerability to scorpius. Ā but here, with him looking directly at him, and said with so much emotion and love, even in such a dark placeā¦oOOF
he refused to let go of scorpius when they met again in godricās hollow. Ā my heartā¦..always one arm around scorpiusās shoulders, or one hand on his chest, as scorpius clings on to him.
~kimberly!polly SMILED and giggled when she stepped in blood? āoh, potter, iāve got blood on my shoe!ā *delighted* and then as the staircase rolled away, she turned on her stomach to gaze down at scorpius, grinning flirtatiously. Ā this is my second time seeing her as polly, but from what i remember, katherine!polly wasnāt as sadistic in the dark au as she was. Ā i personally prefer kimberly!polly.
~sarita!myrtle!! like w kimberly!polly this is my second time seeing sarita!myrtle and i donāt really remember much about lauren!myrtle to compare, but sarita!myrtle was hilarious. Ā she got a round of applause just for appearing. Ā āgirlsā¦.*turns around, stares directly @ albus* AND BOYSā *albus turns around, confused, as if sheās talking to someone behind him* UGHHH sheās so good and sheāll absolutely kill it as (main) polly, i can feel it.
~this was my first time seeing jack pravda as young harry! his voice is deeper than zellās, and he was so adorably confused in the graveyard scene. Ā āwhy are there so many flowers?ā
~antoinette!hermione was a lot less playful than jenny!hermione. Ā she does try for comedic effect, but sheās a bit more serious overall. Ā she was so scary in the first timeline! Ā when she waves her wand to dismiss the class and sheās standing all alone, she looks out with such a distant, despairing expression, then composes herself immediately.Ā
~tom!ron was very funny! Ā again, my issue with ron in cc comes down to how he was written. Ā he may have been relegated to shitty comic relief (whyā¦ā¦is one of the first things he saysā¦ā¦a fart jokeā¦..?), but itās up to the actors do what they can to flesh out some semblance of a likeable character from the bs that the script gave us. Ā and tom!ron was great!! heās not asā¦dopey? dorky? as matt!ron, whoās very funny but a bitāchildish? i guess? tom!ron feels more like an adult who still has a childish sense of humor, if that makes sense.
~ROMIONE. Ā watching a new take on romione was like falling in love w romione all over again. Ā tom/antoinette was a very loving pair. Ā jenny/matt tease each other a lot more, but tom/antoinette are more tactile. Ā their kiss was so sweet <333
~thereās hardly any love forĀ saraĀ farbāsĀ delphi for some reason. iām not sure why; her shift from delphi diggory to delphi riddle is so chilling. delphi diggory has a high pitched voice and is really goofy around albus. Ā scorpius absolutely hates her lmao. Ā as soon as she switches, her voice drops to a low growl and sheās downright terrifying. Ā iām sad to see her go!
~WILL CARLYON. Ā is it possible to fall in love with the portrayal of a character in a handful of scenes? heās got like five lines total but oh my god. Ā one thing a lot of people note about nicholas!albus is the way heās so obviously a fourteen-year-old child. Ā willās james sirius potter is SUCH a thirteen-year-old in the opening sceneā¦itās somewhat disconcerting watching this very-obviously-twenty-something-year-old man flap his arms going āWATCH OUTTT FOR THE THESTTRRAAAAAAALSā but it works? itās believable?? heās so close with lily luna. Ā this is my third time seeing him and every time he pretends to pounce on her and hug her during the thestral line i fall in love?? ginny scolds him and he is sheepish, but he wonāt stop making the troll face at albus. Ā āSLITHERING SLYTHERIN STOP WITH YOUR DITHERINGā *smacks albus*
~yeah i promised jsp content and iām fucking delivering
~heās sO excited watching albus get sorted. when the hat goes āSLYTHERINā heās absolutely shocked. Ā heās confused. Ā he just stares at albus, confused, until yann (jonathan gordon, who once again gives us a delightfully dislikable yann) says some shit and james just turns to him and swats his hand at him. Ā he genuinely looked ready to fight yann. Ā i couldnāt tell but i think he tells him to stop?? it was hard to hear but his mouth definitely moved, i think to tell yann to cut it out.
~the scene with the students eavesdropping on mcgonagallās meeting with the parents. Ā oh my god i donāt think he did anything that much differently than last time but i need to talk about this because i didnāt do it justice in my last recap.
~they sit on the stairs (iirc) top to bottom craig, yann, karl, rose, james. Ā iām gonna ignore craig, yann, and karl since there are some serious family feels going on w rose and james
~jsp and rose begin the scene smiling, snickering as they hear that albus and scorpius fucked up. Ā āahaha they got into deep shitā but then when they learn that they wrote rose and hugo (??whom??) out of time and then killed harry, their faces fall. Ā jamesās eyes become vacant, far-off as he learns what happened to his brother. Ā his breathing becomes heavier and faster until heās a few breaths from hyperventilating. Ā he leans his forehead against the stairwell/banister and shakes his head, mouthing/whispering ānoā¦noā¦ā
~nadia brownās rose is such a little shit but sheās so good in this scene. Ā when she learns that she didnāt exist in the new timeline, she grabs jamesās shoulder and he grabs her hand. Ā they donāt let go for the rest of the scene.
~iām like half convinced that will got the part because of his amazingly expressive eyebrows. Ā i think my sister calls it āback row acting?ā his eyebrows can probably be seen from the back row. Ā after the mcgonagall scene is over he sits on the stairs, raising one eyebrow at rose and hermione, then goes back to reading the scroll.
~i didnāt mean for this to become a will carlyon fan account but he deserves it. Ā according to nicholas heās the biggest potterhead in the cast. heās a ravenclaw. he can sing. Ā heās so fucking valid and iām so glad heās staying for year 3. Ā heās got two followers on youtube and one of them is me. Ā please guys like no one talks about him and iāll fill this niche. Ā same with the lovely sarita. sheās so kind and so beautiful and so talented she can sing so well and she gives everything during wand dance listen i spent the beginning of this thing making fun of my sister for liking joey so much but saritaā¦ā¦..
~cc nyc said straight girl/lesbian solidarity Ā
~anywayā¦
~nicholas podany as albus. Ā so. Many. Tears. Ā i didnāt realize this before but his whole body trembles when he cries?? i first noticed this when he and harry were in the slytherin common room. Ā i was like āare his pajamas vibrating?? is this an optical illusion (theyāre striped pajamas)???ā no, his whole body was shaking with suppressed crying. Ā once i noticed i couldnāt un-notice and this continued for the rest of the show.
~bubba weilerās scorpius didnāt seem much different from usual? i could go on about him butā¦.thatās what my unfinished fic is forā¦ā¦one dayā¦ā¦ā¦.
~okay so this is where i elaborate on the scorbus moments that made me want to YEET myself off the roof of the theatre (if you had to make sense of my typos on discord: i am Sorry)
~the slytherin dorm scene: scorpius tickles albus to wake him up. Ā he then makes himself comfortable on albusās bed and wonāt stop rubbing and patting his thigh.
~in addition to being austistic, bubba!scorp is bisexual (jon case would be proud) and here is PROOF: to flirt, bubba!scorpius leans against objects, sprawls his body out, plays with his hair, etc all extremely cheesy, greasy, suave moves. Ā he blows a kiss to polly as heās sprawled across the stairs. Ā when he ROLLS down the stairs (looked painfulā¦) to see rose at the end, he plays with his hair, shoots her a finger gun (further proof heās bi), and lowers his voice. Ā but the comparison i need to highlight is THIS: when he says rose smells like bread, (1) he leans against the suitcases, trying to look suave, and (2) his face is instant regret. he silently bends back and mouths āWHAT WHY BREAD?? WHAT??? WHY???ā and nowā¦when he delivers his āENGORGIMPRESSEDā line to albus, he (1) leans against the sink, (2) grins, lowering his voice, and when the pun doesnāt land, (3) his face immediately falls, instant regret, the literal definition of āoH MY GOD WHAT WHY DID I JUST SAY THATā the same expression he had when rose wasnāt impressed. Ā coincidence? i think NOT. Ā heās trying so hard to flirt but he has no idea how to interact w people im --
~delphi in the church: when the adults have all surrounded delphi with their magic in the center of the stage, albus, ginny, and scorpius are huddled together. scorpius is behind albus, clutching his shoulder and hand. Ā albus breaks free for āSHEāS A MURDERER IāVE SEEN HER MURDERā (an underappreciated line imo) and scorpius just watches him, clearly wanting to help but not knowing how
~the final hug. Ā my initial, endorphin-fueled reaction was, verbatim: āTHE FUNAL HUG NSCWR SEEN IR LAST SO LLNG NEVER SAW NICJ HUG HIM BACK NOSES ALMOST TOYCHONF.ā Ā not even this is enough to convey my reaction to the final hug, but iāll try my best to transcribe it. Ā
scorpius: runs up the stairs, grabs albus into a hug
albus: stunned for a moment, then wraps his arms around scorpiusās shoulders and hugs him back, burying his face into the crook of scorpiusās neck. Ā this is the first time iāve seen him hug back, at least so fiercely. Ā they stand there for a good 3-5 seconds, then albus says, quietly, āwhatās this? i thought we didnāt hug.ā
scorpius, pulling back but still close to albus: āi wasnāt sure whether we shouldā¦ā *looks up at albus, literal inches from his face* āin this new version of usā¦ā *more gazing into each otherās eyes for a few seconds*
albus: āwellā¦you better ask rose if itās the right thing to doā¦ā he sounded unsure? not as playful as before?
scorpius: *stares at albus for a few seconds* āa..aahaā¦ā¦ā¦..yeah right!ā
he turns around and runs down the stairs. Ā albus goes āiāll see you at dinner!ā and scorpius turns around, smiles at him, and walks off, albus grinning and gazing so lovingly as he departs iām gonna c r y
i canāt think of anything else to say about the show itself? Ā but my sister has given me a lot of material so iām gonna talk about what went on with her because itās relevant to our stage door interactions.
as we ate, she described how she would rewrite cc. Ā she has valid and absolutely invalid suggestions. Ā she would keep the father/son issues, make scorbus canon, remove or rewrite rose, and rewrite delphiās backstory (valid). Ā she would remove the sorting hat and the dark timeline (not valid). Ā
during the intermission between acts 3 and 4, we started looking through the playbill and she started gossiping/venting about how much she hates the people in her schoolās theatre (valid, since theyāre bullying assholes). Ā i brought up a meme i sent her that i saw on twitter about how no high school theatre guys can sing, act, dance, and not be sexist. Ā somehow this discussion went back to nicholas podany? she was like, āiāve been listening to his songs and deep blue is a low-key bop.ā i asked if she heard his most recent song, telling myself. Ā she hadnāt and she immediately went to soundcloud to listen to it. Ā her reaction was PRICELESS. Ā she absolutely adored it. Ā she was dancing in her seat, going āokay this is actually really good??ā like ofc it is? i donāt recommend bad songs? she tried to replay it but then her data ran out and the lyric theatre wifi is shit so she got very upset. Ā then the lights turned off and she reluctantly took out her earbuds.
there was a little girl (around 6-7ish, iād say) in the very first row dressed as hermione for part one--complete with a doll and a broom. Ā for part two she was wearing a hedwig costume that looked homemade! she was very adorable, and bubba waved hello to her when he came for the curtain call.
stage door:
~sarita came out first! we told her that this was our third time at the show and second time seeing her. Ā i congratulated her on being cast as polly and she was so happy! dare i sayā¦..loml
~tom and antoinette were so happy to have been the first cover romione we saw! tom was like āah, you saw the best ron (himself)!ā we were in front of a man from the uk who had seen the london show five times, and he and tom struck up a conversation about where they were from.
~nadia brown was so happy to see us! she didnāt remember us lmao but sheās so friendly
~edward james hyland (amos/dumbledore) wasā¦politically campaigning?? the people in front of us were from vermont and he was like āahā¦vermontā¦do you support bernie??ā just like that. Ā they were caught off guard but i think they gave an affirmative answer, and he was like āand if he doesnāt get the nominationā¦?ā they were still caught off guard and he just went āyouāll vote blue, rightā¦? cause itās the right thing to doā¦.?ā idk iām firmly liberal but i thought this was a weird place to get political but okay
~EVERYONE was telling nicholas podany about how much they love telling myself. Ā he was telling the people in front of us about how it was mastered/mixed by solangeās producer(?) and my sister and i exchanged :0 looks. Ā she was getting shy, but i was like ātell him! heāll love to talk about it, i guarantee it!ā because even though i produce 0 content, i *am* an artist and i *do* know that we artists love validation
~so he came to us and she started talking about his songs! weāre fortunate that it was a more rock-y song so weāreā¦able to sound like we know what weāre talking about lmao. Ā growing up our mom would play us classical music (check out beethovenās wig yo) and our dad would play us the ramones. Ā one of my earliest memories was arguing with my sister (probably around 4 at the time) about the lyrics to āi wanna be sedatedā ahh⦠(she was correct btw)
~(donāt argue with me the ramones may not be poets but theyāre valid)
~i was right! he was SO excited to talk to us!! my sister complimented the song and the production. Ā she said āi ADORE your new song!! itās a high key bop!ā and he broke into the BIGGEST smile. Ā she was like āiām gonna play it until i hate itā and he said something along the lines of āi was in the studio listening to it nonstop for 8(??) hours i canāt stand it.ā Ā he was talking about how he made the song with his āown scorpiusā but i forgot whoā¦he said scorpius and my mind blanked lmao. Ā heās brought this person up before in interviews so i can probably find it. Ā she complimented the fact that it was different from his usual stuff and he told us about how he had a rock band in high school. Ā @nick where tf is your rock content pls deliver
~i actually spoke this time and cut in to tell him about how she was trying to listen to it on repeat but the signal gave out. she was trying to tell me to shut up but itās my legal duty as the older sister to embarrass her. Ā
me: āI told her about your song during the intermissionāā
her: ādonāt!ā
me: āno, nO, i told her and she was listening and then she ran out of dataāā
him: āaaAa noo!ā
her: āI listened to it!ā
~then i told him that we loved seeing how he played albus and that weāre going to miss him, that we were going to see the cast change show but we couldnāt get tickets (i kindly left off the reason why), and he was so sweet about it *clenches heart* he told us how much he loves being able to experience this, that weāll be so lucky to have james romney take over, etc etc i kinda wasnāt listening bc I was too emo, but I remember going āā¦but I donāt want to say goodbyeā¦ā and he just. gave me a sad look like āI know.ā Ā there was so much pity in his expression. Ā why is he leaving us.
~the uk guy behind us was talking about how heād seen the london year 3 and 4. Ā nicholas was like āoh, joe and dom? yeah iāve spoken to joe and domāwait, no, i havenāt met dom? i know he has an impressive social media presenceā and they started talking about how different actors bring different things to albus and how the show allows them to explore different aspects to their characters and he justā¦wasnāt making any of this any easier for me lmao iām mourning the loss of nick!albus and itās not even march
~i feel bad that we werenāt able to speak with fiona reid (petunia/umbridge) because nicholas was talking to us. Ā
~jonno roberts. Ā this was the first time iāve interacted w him at sd. Ā his draco has made such an impact on me, heās my favorite actor in the show, and what do i say? what great words come out of my mouth? āhi you were great.ā my sister KICKED me with her heeled boots. good thing iām a lesbian because my doc martens protected my feet from the force of her anger.
~james snyder was enraptured in conversation with the people in front of us and just took our playbills to sign as he spoke with them. then he went āhi,ā passed over us to talk to the guy behind us. Ā my sister was like āyou were great!ā
~tbh sd was kinda messy bc we were at the end of the line and the barrier things didnāt allow for the actors to get enough room to interact with the fans at the back. also jonno was standing there and heās not a small man.
~saw several male actors leaving sd, waving goodbye at us and just walking away. Ā MOOD. Ā i was exhausted and i wasnāt the one running around on stage!

McCoy Tyner, Groundbreaking Pianist Of 20th Century Jazz, Dies At 81
McCoy Tyner, a pianist whose deep resonance, hammering attack and sublime harmonic invention made him a game-changing catalyst in jazz and beyond, died Friday, March 6, at his home in New Jersey. His death was confirmed by his manager. No cause of death was given. He was 81.
Tyner was the last surviving member of the John Coltrane Quartet, among the most momentous groups in jazz history. Few musicians have ever exerted as much influence as a sideman. His crucial role in the group's articulation of modal harmony, from the early 1960s on, will always stand as a defining achievement: The ringing intervals in his left hand, often perfect fourths or fifths, became the cornerstone of a style that endures today.
But Tyner was always a more multidimensional musician than the sum of his mannerisms would seem to suggest. And he had a long, consequential post-Coltrane career as a composer and bandleader. Among his dozens of albums are a handful regarded as classics, like Reaching Fourth, The Real McCoy and Atlantis. A number of his compositions, including "Passion Dance" and "Peresina," have entered the common repertory.
"On all the recordings with Coltrane, and indeed on all his work of the '60s, McCoy's crisp, lightning-fast right-hand lines, set against the sheer power of his left, are a revelation," jazz historian Lewis Porter, one of Coltrane's biographers, wrote in an email NPR Music on Friday. "He came out of the tradition (he mentioned Thelonious Monk as one of his favorites), but he was one of those few who forged an absolutely unique style."
Because Tyner's work with Coltrane catapulted him to the first tier of accompanists, that style can be heard on some of the landmark jazz albums of the '60s. Among them are Page One, by tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, and Open Sesame, by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard ā a pair of auspicious debuts on Blue Note ā and Stick-Up! by vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson.
Tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter enlisted Tyner on a close succession of Blue Note sessions in the mid-'60s. One of these yielded the classic JuJu, which also had Elvin Jones on drums and another Coltrane associate, Reggie Workman, on bass. The title track to JuJu, which opens the album, bears Tyner's stamp from the first downbeat, with a cresting wave of chords in a shrewdly indeterminate key.
Alfred McCoy Tyner was born Dec. 11, 1938 in Philadelphia, the oldest child of Jarvis Tyner and the former Beatrice Stevenson. The oldest of three siblings, he began taking piano lessons at 13. His mother, who ran a beauty salon out of their West Philadelphia home, installed a piano there, because it was the largest room of the house.
This yielded unanticipated benefits, as Tyner recalled in a 1963 interview with Stanley Dance, in DownBeat magazine. "Bud Powell and his brother were living just around the corner from me in Philadelphia," he said, referring to the pacesetting bebop pianist, "but they didn't have a piano in their apartment, and Bud came to my mother's house to play." Powell ā who, with peers like Charlie Parker and Max Roach, had redefined the language of modern jazz in the 1940s ā remained a core influence for Tyner, even as he developed his own unmistakable voice.
Tyner studied classical theory and harmony at the Granoff School of Music, but also drew formative insights from personal instruction ā including conga lessons with Garvin Masseaux, who was working at the time with Nigerian drummer Babatunde Olatunji.
By his high school years, Tyner was playing professionally in and around Philadelphia, as part of a modern jazz scene that was one of the most vibrant in the country. Among his more fateful appointments was a band led by trumpeter-composer Cal Massey, an associate of Coltrane; it was also through Massey that Tyner met his future wife, Aisha, whose sister was a vocalist in the band.
In 1959, Tyner joined trumpeter Art Farmer and saxophonist Benny Golson in a group they called The Jazztet; he made his recording debut on Meet the Jazztet, released the following year. That same year, 1960, Tyner played on Coltrane's album My Favorite Things; his tolling, meditative chords on the title track, a popular song borrowed from the hit Broadway musical The Sound of Music, were a key part of its allure.
The classic John Coltrane Quartet ā with Tyner, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums ā formally coalesced in 1962. For the next several years it created at a prodigious pace, recording landmark albums like Crescent and A Love Supreme, and setting a fearsome bar for intensity on the bandstand. Recordings like Live at Birdland have been prized by generations of musicians and fans; in 2005 another live document, Live at the Half Note: One Down, One Up, left another major impression, 40 years after its recording date.
Tyner stayed with Coltrane until soon after that recording, as the music grew more cacophonous, rhythmically abstract and untethered from root tonality. His piano chair was passed on to Alice Coltrane, who quickly made it her own.
"I was so immersed in the music when I was with John," Tyner told me in 1997. "The influence was so great, and the roles we all played in that group were so powerful; you couldn't divorce yourself from it just because you weren't physically there. For a while there, all the horn players that were with me wanted to sound like John. So I deliberately started using alto sax instead of tenor, and other instruments, because I wanted to kind of try something different."
The scale of Tyner's output ranged from solo piano to big band, with some notable midsize efforts like the seven-piece band on Expansions, which enlisted Ron Carter on cello and Shorter on clarinet as well as saxophone. A similarly titled follow-up, Extensions, included Alice Coltrane's harp; Sahara, which followed, found Tyner experimenting on koto and flute.
The searching Afrocentrism of these albums carried on the intrepid tone and earnest spiritualism of Coltrane's music, without overt emulation. The critic Gary Giddins, reflecting on the 1970s in The Village Voice, once pegged Tyner "the most influential pianist of the decade," an assessment that could credibly be extended outside that frame. As he settled into the stature of an elder, Tyner worked meaningfully not only with peers like Hutcherson and Bartz, but also figures from successive generations, like saxophonists Michael Brecker and Joe Lovano.
Tyner was a 2002 NEA Jazz Master and a five-time Grammy winner ā most recently in 2004 for his album Illuminations, featuring a band with trumpeter Terence Blanchard, alto saxophonist Gary Bartz, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Lewis Nash. He worked extensively in a trio format; one longtime working band had Avery Sharpe on bass and Aaron Scott on drums. Tyner's final album was a piano recital, Solo: Live From San Francisco, released in 2009; it includes compositions by Coltrane and Duke Ellington as well as his own songs, including "Ballad For Aisha."
In addition to Aisha, Tyner's immediate survivors include his son, Nurudeen; his brother, Jarvis; his sister, Gwendolyn-Yvette Tyner; and three grandchildren.
The legacy of Tyner's pianism can be heard far and wide, in the music of everyone from salsa legend Eddie Palmieri to Late Show bandleader Jon Batiste. His innovations in harmony, with their intimations of transcendence, form a standard proudly upheld by contemporary pianists like Nduduzo Makhathini, whose forthcoming Blue Note debut bears the influence unmistakably.
"I feel very honored, actually," Tyner told me about the legions of pianists who have emulated his style. "I really do, because I think that if I could make a statement that makes a difference, and the influence could be preserved through the generations to come, that means that my stay here on earth has a meaning."

Social Climbing Has a Whole New Meaning
On a Friday evening last spring, Zack Woodruff picked up two college friends and drove seven hours down Interstate 65: through Indianapolis, bourbon country and the rolling hills of Appalachia.
In the middle of the night, they arrived at Miguelās Pizza in Slade, Ky., and pitched tents in the backyard, near a gear shop that sells rock-climbing equipment. They were destined for the nearby Red River Gorge, a dramatic rocky cliff that Mr. Woodruff has explored eight or nine times.
But Mr. Woodruff, 28, a Ph.D. candidate in robotics at Northwestern University, lives in Chicago, so most of the time, he climbs at First Ascent, an indoor climbing gym with four locations in the city, where, he said, āa lot of grad students climb after work.ā
Over the past five years, rock climbing has become a popular activity among young professionals and families, documented on social media and in films like āThe Dawn Wall,ā āValley Uprisingā and āFree Solo,ā an Oscar winner that chronicled Alex Honnoldās ropeless ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.
In 2016, rock climbing was added to the 2020 Olympics. New climbing gyms are mushrooming like cycling studios before them, and U.S.A. Climbing, the competition circuit, signed a multiyear broadcast deal with ESPN in January.
Popular street wear brands have been mining āold-school climbing stuffā from North Face, Patagonia, Eddie Bauer and L.L. Bean for inspiration, according to Matthew Schonfeld, 27, a climber who lives in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn and does marketing for Rowing Blazers.
āItās a moment, you know?ā said Jimmy Chin, 46, who directed āFree Soloā with his wife, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi. āThese moments happen when a bunch of different variables all line up.ā
According to Climbing Business Journal, which tracks gym openings nationally, the commercial climbing gym industry grew at a rate of 6.9 percent in 2016, 10 percent in 2017 and 11.8 percent in 2018.
āIt does seem like the growth of the gym industry is continuing to trend upward,ā said John Burgman, 38, a journalist who writes Climbing Business Journalās annual report and coaches a youth climbing team in Carmel, Ind.
Most rock gyms look equal parts Flintstone and Jetson; visiting one feels like landing on a Technicolor planet, or exploring a cave bedecked with Fruity Pebbles.
There are two types of indoor climbing walls: bouldering walls, which are low enough that climbers can leap (or tumble) onto the mats without getting hurt; and rope-climbing walls, which tower over the bouldering walls and require harnesses and rope. In the most well-known form of rope-climbing, ātop-roping,ā partners on the ground ābelay,ā or gather the slack as you climb higher, so you wonāt fall too far if you slip. The sport has its own arcane terminology, with difficulty ratings like V5.
Young professionals flock to these playgrounds after work because the exercise is intense, unstructured and sociable; the gyms may be one of the last urban locales where talking to strangers is encouraged.
Engineers in particular seem to be attracted to the sport, because each āboulder problemā of holds is a three-dimensional puzzle, and gyms reset them monthly to keep things spicy. (As part of its corporate wellness program, Google installed a rock wall in its New York offices in Chelsea, in 2013. Its Bay Area and Los Angeles offices have rock walls, too.)
And for parents, climbing is part of the so-called free-range-kids movement ā with proper supervision, of course, the antithesis of the dreaded screens.
āIf you walked in and saw my itty-bitty 5-year-old, youād be like, Oh my gosh! She goes high. She goes to the top, and sheāll rappel,ā said Megan Novotney, 36, a yoga teacher whose 6-year-old triplets also partake, sometimes rappelling down together while holding hands.
āWhen theyāre bouldering, they donāt climb anything higher than what they know theyāre capable of getting down from, and that was really awesome because it translated over to the park tooā Ms. Novotney said. āI trust them, and they trust their bodies.ā
Rock Steady, Baby
Adults, of course, are also relishing the chance to unplug themselves, and those not partial to yogaās chants and group movement may find a more individualist escape on the wall.
āItās active, itās good for you, you have to try hard, it makes you feel very present in the moment,ā Mr. Chin said of yoga, āand I think climbing does a lot of those things. Itās one of those activities where you do actually need to put your phone down and you do actually have to be engaged, and for some reason itās easy to have conversations and talk to people you donāt know when youāre climbing.ā
āWhen youāre climbing,ā he said, āthereās also a certain level of vulnerability, because youāre scared and youāre all having a shared experience, especially if youāre trying the same climb.ā
Growing up in Mankato, Minn., he didnāt know climbing existed. When he started, 25 years ago, āclimbing was a pretty fringe activity,ā he said, āand it was usually kind of like the misfits, who couldnāt play ball sports, or werenāt great at team sports.ā
These days, there is a climbing gym in nearly every major city. Corporations like Touchstone Climbing, El Cap, First Ascent and Brooklyn Boulders have plans to build more.
Sasha DiGiulian, 27, is a three-time United States National Champion climber who helped design a climber emoji and now hosts high-end climbing wellness retreats in Kalymnos, Greece.
There, groups of 16 to 20 ā often millennials from Silicon Valley, San Francisco and New York City ā shell out $3,500 for luxury accommodations, four days of climbing with Ms. DiGiulian and three guides, dinners of freshly caught fish and ouzo, and a rest day swimming with wild dolphins.
Her clients are āyoung professionals looking for an experience,ā she said, and since it is tough to switch from gym climbing to outdoor climbing, she created the retreat to āfacilitate peopleās transition.ā
Ms. DiGiulian believes that the climbing industry is expanding in tandem with boutique fitness, citing Brooklyn Bouldersā boutique fitness branch in Boston, BKBX, which combines rock climbing with high-intensity interval training (HIIT).
āTheyāre opening these boutique studios that are dedicated to optimizing your fitness in order to ātrain for your next adventure,ā is their slogan,ā she said. āTheyāre not even the traditional sense of climbing, itās climbing broken down into a fitness class. That definitely didnāt exist even five years ago.ā
Harley Pasternak, who trains celebrities including Ariana Grande, Kim Kardashian West and Gwyneth Paltrow, isnāt a fan of rock climbing. None of his clients do it, though climbing makes a few appearances in Goop.comās travel pages.
āItās really not a full-body workout,ā Mr. Pasternak said, though many climbers argue otherwise. āMost of the muscles that people really need to strength-train ā hamstrings, glutes, lower back, rhomboids, triceps ā are not really worked during rock climbing. Rock climbing is mainly lats, forearms, quads and calves, so these are not going to contribute to better posture.ā
Not to mention, he said, most people arenāt strong enough to hoist themselves up a wall without getting hurt.
āKeeping in mind the average American is significantly overweight, I would talk everyone I could out of rock climbing unless you are incredibly light, agile, fit and functional,ā said Mr. Pasternak, 45. āThere is a very small minority of this country that should be rock climbing.ā
He pointed out that the British Journal of Sports Medicine tracked a 36 percent increase in rock climbing injuries from 2006 to 2015, 12 percent of which required hospitalization. Young men were most frequently injured.
Mr. Pasternak also pointed out the absurdity of humans constructing elaborate sheltered courses to challenge themselves
āThatās connecting with nature the same way that spinning in a room is connecting with nature,ā he said. āTheyāre both contrived, artificial versions of the real thing without any connection to nature or the outdoors.ā
Indoor climbing gyms can be expensive, especially in cities like New York and San Francisco. āUnless the commercial real-estate landscape changes, you canāt offer membership for less than $90ā per month, said Michael Cesari, 39, the owner of Steep Rock Bouldering in New York. āItās a bummer because when you go elsewhere, itās not the case with indoor climbing.ā
In other parts of the country, climbing has become so accessible that there are places that allow climbers to volunteer at the gym if they canāt afford a membership, like Memphis Rox in Tennessee, or YMCAs that offer it for free.
Polishing the Face
At Brooklyn Boulders, near one of the slanted bouldering walls ā the shorter walls without ropes ā a diverse group of young people were sitting on the mats and catching up on a recent Saturday while two dogs frolicked in the waiting area.
āWe barely climb,ā said Aaron Stack, a 30-year-old software engineer. āNo one here actually likes climbing, we all just come here to hang out. The climbing is ancillary.ā (He was joking: Theyāve all been climbing for years, and have a weekly brunch after their workout.)
Unexpectedly, Saturday mornings are pretty quiet at Brooklyn Boulders and other gyms. Peak hours are weeknights after work, and the really serious climbers go in the morning before work.
Waiting patiently and considering courses has long been part of the indoor-climbing culture, and yet. āThereās always certain times when itās crowded, but those crowded times have gotten more crowded,ā said Michael Poyatt, 25, a software engineer in San Diego who started climbing after seeing āThe Dawn Wall.ā
Dan Bartz, 36, a founder of First Ascent in Chicago, said his company is trying to avoid crowding issues by opening new locations and requiring new members to attend orientation classes.
āI think there is the risk that you can have the longtime, established climbers and the newer climbers and there can be a tension between those two groups because the experienced climbers know how to behave in a climbing gym,ā Mr. Bartz said. āThey know where to stand, and they know how to share resources like routes or boulder problems.ā
The majority of new climbers follow the rules, but some donāt. Mr. Stack witnessed an incident firsthand.
āOne time, I saw these two people climbing, and it was their first time climbing, and it was on the overhung wall, and the one person fell and swung and knocked over the person belaying,ā he said. āThe one belaying stopped, took both of her hands off the rope, picked up her camera, and took a picture of her friend. Thereās just been a huge influx of people with no clue what theyāre doing.ā
As a result, gyms have had to add extra safety programming; nearly all require climbers to sign a waiver and take a class before they can climb on their own.
In order to compete with the Equinoxes of the world, many climbing gyms offer weight rooms, cardio machines, yoga classes and Wi-Fi. Some are now also installing cafes and co-working spaces.
āStarbucks always talks about being peopleās third place, and thatās really our goal too,ā Mr. Bartz said. āPeople have home and they have work and we want to be that third place they go to and spend time connecting with people.ā
Mr. Cesari likened the sport to snowboarding, whose addition to the Olympics, he pointed out, did not cause a lasting surge in popularity.
āFor how many people will climbing be a lifelong sport, which they will then pass down to their kids? Thatās the big question,ā he said. āOf course people are going to change gyms, theyāre going to move, but are they going to join another one? Or is it something thatās more of a temporary hobby?ā
There is also a stereotype of the āboulder bro,ā perhaps intermittently fasting to improve his agility, showing off his calluses, rocksplaining.
āIf you want to climb really hard, you have to take your shirt off, and you have to wear a beanie,ā Mr. Stack joked. āYou also need a really big chalk bag, like twice this size, you leave it on the ground below you, preferably under where youāre climbing, so when you fall on it, it goes āpoof!ā for dramatic effect.ā
But in fact climbing is more diverse than ever. Brooke Raboutou, 18, made headlines earlier this year when she became the first American to qualify for the Olympics. āI would say that the climbing ratio of men to women is still about 60 percent to 40 percent,ā Ms. DiGiulian said. āThere are far more professional male climbers then there are professional female climbers, and I think the way climbing is changing, you are seeing a lot of people from different backgrounds getting into the sport and excelling.ā
Though the sport is still overwhelmingly white, organizations like Brown Girls Climb, Melanin Base Camp, Brothers of Climbing and Color the Crag help climbers of color connect with one another.
Anna Marie Jennings, 23, met her closest friends in New York through Climb Like a Girl classes at Brooklyn Boulders. āFinding a group of women to climb with was really great because the gym is intimidating as it is, whether thereās all men around or all women around or whatever, just the nature of it can be overwhelming if youāre new,ā she said. āIt is very physical and people watch you, so thatās intimidating no matter who youāre around.ā
āThere are still times where I walk in and youāll see, for lack of a better term, the bro-y guys muscle their way up a really hard boulder problem, and I may not be able to do it from strength,ā she said. āBut I might have more flexibility or balance.ā
Ms. DiGiulian has been a pioneer for women in the sport, and grew up climbing the Red River Gorge, where Mr. Woodruff and his friends camped in Kentucky. A high point of her career was achieving a climb there called Pure Imagination, one of the hardest to be finished by a woman.
This āused to be one of the poorest districts within Kentucky, and now itās blooming with business,ā she said. āWhen I started going to Miguelās, it used to be a little ice cream stand. Now Iāll be in countries like France and Spain and see someone wearing a Miguelās Pizza Shop T-shirt.ā
Dario Ventura, 35, the co-owner and manager of Miguelās, said that since his father Miguel went into business 35 years ago, foot traffic has grown āexponentially.ā
To adapt, Miguelās Pizza renovated its kitchen and country-store restaurant, tripled the size of its campsite, and now employs a staff of 42 mostly transient climbers, many of whom live out of vans, like Alex Honnold in āFree Solo.ā
The local community in Slade has also adapted. Nowadays, Mr. Ventura said, there are three search-and-rescue teams that respond to calls in the Red River Gorge, where previously, there werenāt any. āThe whole area has grown too, thereās a ton of restaurants now, thereās a ton of campsites to compete, and weāre all full every weekend,ā he said. āItās a really healthy environment.ā
However, the gorge has been subject to littering and crag erosion from the crowds. There have been efforts by the Access Fund, a nonprofit climbing organization, to maintain the bolts in the rocks so they donāt wear down from overuse and pop out dangerously while climbers are on the rocks.
Mr. Ventura marveled at all this activity. āFor so many years, you got into rock climbing because you had some crazy uncle that took you out, but with climbing gyms being so accessible and everywhere now, thereās this giant funnel of people that are getting into climbing in urban areas and come here on the weekends,ā he said.
And yet āIāve heard some numbers where something like 10 percent of all people that climb in a climbing gym actually go climbing outside. Which is mind-boggling to me.ā
