On August 8, 1969, on a street in north-west London and almost directly outside a celebrated recording studio, one of the most famous ever album covers was shot.

Photographer Iain MacMillan took the image that would adorn the cover of the brilliant new record named after the street where he stood, Abbey Road. The zebra crossing, almost exactly in front of the studio where The Beatles had created the vast majority of their body of work, was about to become one of the most recognized sites in London and one of the most iconic album covers of popular music.

watching s4 of sex ed right now because i missed out on the final season. queer utopia ass school lmao… poor otis and cal and ruby. really really love the way it’s addressing hypocrisy in the lgbtq community that expects everybody to be vibrant ostentatious flirty hot outspoken and extroverted all the time and quiet/neurodivergent kids tend to get sidelined as boring. like don’t get me wrong abbi and roman are iconic and it’s a huge milestone to show a multifaceted nuanced t4t relationship on a mainstream uk tv show but what especially impresses me about the way they’re written is that they’re not perfect people. abbi is full of toxic positivity and roman is judgemental about religion. once again the disabled representation is also amazing — aisha and isaac aren’t ideal little angels, they’re both kind of mean! and the narrative allows them to be!! lifechanging

now for some negatives: the serious heaviness of maeve’s current plotline feels incongruent with the rest of the show’s low-stakes teen dramedy feel. i almost want to see a whole episode devoted to her story, but every time something traumatic happens to her — a harsh rejection from a snobby professor at uni, or her mother dying of an overdose — we cut to otis’ election campaign or eric putting on his lashes or something; it’s so jarring. it’s like the show doesn’t allow you to feel the emotional beats it creates, jumping to the next point before you get the chance to drink it all in. almost feels like it’s filmed for this supposed gen z audience with 0 attention span that needs scenes to flick through one after another. not enough breathing room

not much room for analysis either but that’s because i’ve become too used to scifi & fantasy where everything’s a metaphor, when it’s so called realism and not exactly artful cinema there’s not a lot of scope. but i did notice how cruelly ironic it is for eric to be nicknamed ‘saviour’ by abbi when he’s struggling so much to reconcile his identity with his faith in jesus (the saviour). talk about uncomfortable… then finding that bible on the road before getting shat on by a bird, that’s a fuckin omen babes. ncuti is a phenomenal actor as always, he’s so different to 15 here, much more carefree and flamboyant, i prefer the doctor to eric but eric’s fun he’s fine

Hello hello! The weekend has been good so far and I hope the same is true for you!

My first big ship was Carter and Abby from the show ER. I absolutely still ship them, despite the show being done for a long time now. They were the perfect friends to lovers but unfortunately the writers didn’t think that and ruined it before the show ended.

There doesn’t appear to be much of an ER fandom left so I’m not really in the fandom but every now and then I’ll go on the hunt for some Carter and Abby posts for old time’s sake!

Kiss It! by Abbie Trayler-Smith

'Kiss it!' is the result of a long-term collaboration between photographer Abbie Trayler-Smith and Shannon, a young woman living with obesity. Over the course of 12-years, Abbie documented Shannon’s journey from teenager to adult—navigating friendships, family, first-boyfriends, prom nights, holidays and jobs. Shannon has been the central inspiration for Abbie’s long-term project, ‘The Big O’ examining obesity in school-age children and young adults.

“So much is yet to be understood about obesity, but the more I learn the more convinced I am that hormones, processed foods (pushed by government and industry), sedentry lifestyles pushed by society, and idealogical aspirations pushed by social media are as culpable as any individual (seemingly of free) choice or responsibility and therefore an issue for us all to ponder” - Abbie Trayler-Smith.

I started scanning negatives for Abbie on this over 10 years ago and it's so delightful that Abbie stayed true to my work and gave me the opportunity to scan the edited images for this project that she has devoted more than a decade to. Both her friendship and trust mean everything when it comes to translating negative colours from scanner to cmyk for print. I love how it looks, the cover is just fab there is real intimacy in diary entries plus the text essays makes this genuinely feel sensitive and loving for Shannon; the girl she first photographed in 2010 and followed for 12 years.
