Drew had spent much of the morning pacing around his and y/n’s shared apartment, cleaning the space repeatedly, fidgeting with his hair, and double quadruple checking all of the food. Y/n’s parents and younger brother were mere moments away, their flight having just landed in Charleston. Y/n had already left to pick them up, Drew staying behind because of the limited space in y/n’s small car, which was a blessing in disguise for the nervous wreck. Sure, he had met y/n’s family before when they’d visited the set of season one, but that was before the two of them had moved in together and started dating. Before he’d fallen so deeply in love with her that he wasn’t sure what he’d do if he messed this up.

What if they didn’t think he was good enough for y/n? What if they thought he was holding her back? What if they didn’t see a future for their relationship? What if—

The front door to y/n and Drew’s apartment suddenly flew open. On the other side was y/n standing with a wide smile as she welcomed her family to her “humble abode”, her parents and brother standing behind her, luggage in hand. Drew quickly scrambled over, running his hands through his hair as he moved to greet y/n’s family.

“H– Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Y/ln. And Luke.” Drew said, an anxious grin spreading across his face as y/n’s family shuffled into the entryway of Drew and y/n’s apartment. Y/n furrowed her brow as she looked at Drew, his usually mellow demeanor clearly riddled with nerves.

“Mr. and Mrs. Y/ln?” Y/n’s mom teased, dropping her suitcase to the ground before pulling Drew into a big hug. Drew’s shoulders tensed, his eyes darting to meet y/n’s before he relaxed, returning the hug. 

“I think we’re already past that, Starkey.” Y/n’s dad laughed before offering his hand out to Drew for a firm handshake before pulling him into a hug. Drew chuckled nervously as he pulled away, his eyes darting to y/n’s brother, Luke, before greeting him with the same handshake and hug.

“Sweaty hands. You nervous?” Luke said deadpanned before cracking into a sly grin. Y/n scowled at him, elbowing her brother, before moving to stand next to Drew. She snaked a hand around Drew’s waist, squeezing him lightly before looking up at him. Despite her efforts to alleviate Drew’s anxiety, he had been on edge the entire week leading up to her family’s arrival.

“So, can we get a tour of the place?” Y/n’s mom asked with an enthusiastic smile.

“Of course!” Y/n said, bumping her hip against Drew. Drew glanced down at her quickly, her unshaken gaze soothing a bit of the worry in his mind.

“Y– yeah. I’ll get your bags.” Drew said, nodding to y/n’s parents before grabbing their suitcases. He quickly dropped them in y/n’s old bedroom, transformed into a guest bedroom once the two of them had begun dating and opted to share Drew’s room.

“Where am I sleeping?” Luke asked his sister, the family making their way into the kitchen as Drew returned.

“You’re sleeping on the couch.” Y/n said, brushing her brother off before turning back to her tour of the apartment. Luke groaned, leaning up against the kitchen counter.

“It’s a pretty comfortable couch, if that makes you feel any better.” Drew said, flashing Luke a quick grin as he leaned on the counter opposite him. Drew’s fingers drummed against the countertop as he took in a deep breath. Luke scanned over Drew’s tense form before meeting his gaze.

“Dude, you’ve seriously gotta fucking relax.” Luke said bluntly, taking a grape from the fruit tray that was sitting nearby and popping it into his mouth. Drew’s eyes widened.

“I— um, It’s just… y’know, a big deal.” Drew sighed, running a hand down his face. Luke chuckled, taking another grape as he shook his head.

“It’s just my parents, dude, don’t get worked up over it.” Luke said. “Plus, they already really like you.”

“Really?” Drew said, blinking quickly.

“Yeah,” Luke said. “You should’ve heard them talking the first time we visited the set. They wouldn’t shut up about how y/n needed to ‘stop wasting time and snatch up that nice Drew boy before it’s too late’.”

“They said that?” Drew swallowed harshly.

“Yeah I’m honestly surprised y/n didn’t tell you.” Luke laughed. “Everytime they called her they were like ‘have you and Drew gotten together yet?’ and she would always be like ‘Mom, stop we’re just friends’. It was a whole thing.”

“Hmm.” Drew hummed, trying his best to suppress the smile that threatened to spread across his face. Maybe he shouldn’t feel so surprised that her parents were also plotting on the two of them getting together, it felt like everyone around them was doing that. Friends, castmates, family, even random strangers all seemed to recognize the connection between them that expanded past just regular friendship.

“Oh, that’s where you guys went.” Y/n teased as she returned back to the kitchen from giving her parents a tour of the apartment.

“I was just telling Drew all about your emo phase in middle school.” Luke grinned, causing y/n’s face to drop. She raised her hand to deliver a smack to Luke’s shoulder, but he snuck from her grasp just in time, making sure to grab another grape before slinking away.

“Let’s get lunch started before Luke eats all of the food.” Y/n sighed, ushering everyone to grab their plates. Her parents and brother complied, likely starving from the day of travel, and quickly filled up their plates before making their way over to the dining table. Drew, on the other hand, remained leaning against the kitchen counter.

“Y’good?” Y/n asked, soothing a hand down Drew’s arm. Drew turned to look at her, a gentle smile spreading across his lips before he pressed a kiss to the top of her head.

“Yeah, yeah.” Drew said, grabbing a plate from the stack and handing it to y/n.

“Sounds like you and my brother are getting along smoothly.” Y/n said as she put a tongful of salad onto her plate.

“You think?” Drew asked. “He told me I needed to ‘fucking relax’.”

“Being blunt is his love language,” Y/n laughed as she rounded the countertop, “so you’re already in.”

Drew nodded, following y/n into the dining room. As they approached the table, Drew quickly sat his plate down before pulling y/n’s chair out for her. She took the gesture with a smile, the two of them sitting next to each other at the table.

“So, how’s filming going for you guys?” Y/n’s mom asked, taking a sip of water.

“It’s good, it’s good. Definitely a bit different from last season.” Y/n said. Drew nodded, glancing between y/n and her parents.

“What about you, Drew? How are you doing?” Y/n’s dad asked, turning to Drew with a warm expression. Drew finished his bite of food, quickly wiping his mouth.

“Yeah, it’s great.” Drew said. “Everyone’s just so happy to be back.”

“Great,” y/n’s dad said. “That’s good to hear, son.”

Drew’s reaction to the word must not have been subtle, Luke letting out a choked laugh at Drew’s wide eyed expression. Y/n looked over at him, grinning to herself before reaching for Drew’s hand underneath the table. He took it, his fingers quickly weaving with her own.

Y/n’s family had fallen into comfortable conversation, but Drew’s heart was still hammering so loudly in his head he found it difficult to chime in. Son? As in, “you’re good enough for my daughter, I’d be proud to call you my son”? Well damn. The word hit his system like a drug, the high making his head spin with dopamine.

Before he knew it, they’d already begun clearing off the table. Drew found himself fitting into the seemingly predetermined system of y/ln-family-post-meal-cleanup, drying off dishes passed to him by y/n’s mother with ease. Eventually, y/n’s family retreated into the guest bedroom to begin unpacking, leaving Drew and y/n to finish putting away the last of the dishes. Y/n took one of the glasses, rising up onto her tip toes as she reached for the highest shelf.

“So, what do you think?” Drew asked, taking the glass from y/n and putting it onto the shelf with ease.

“About what?” Y/n asked, polishing another glass as she looked over at Drew.

“Your parents,” Drew said, “do you think they like me?”

Y/n laughed, handing Drew the cleaned glass.

“Oh, of course,” Y/n chuckled. “They’ve been in love with you since the day they met you. Hell, since the day I even mentioned your name, Drew… and so have I.”

in FT when the other marauders are at uni in London (J+S at prestigious big boy unis, Pete at a middling one he struggles through) Remus is indeed staying at the Tufnell Park abode ((which is acutely painful for him bc this is pre-Em Sirius who can’t keep his trousers on ))

BUT ☝🏻 he’s not resting on his laurels!! in the earlier chapters I mention that sirius + james have a YouTube car channel (a proto-FT) that’s pretty successful and is how moody comes to know of them — remus is heavyweighting the research for that and keeping the channel + its socials going while s + j are studying. there’s some cash flow he gets paid out of (and sirius keeps transferring back his rent lol)

remus also has a succession of unsexy temp jobs that he keeps being fired from bc the world hates him and manual labour makes him wobbly. I simply can’t picture FT Remus doing anything remotely cool (record/book shop?) when he’s not in a car…like that guy is behind a desk suffering in fluorescent lighting with a face full of data entry… with a middle manager who chews with their mouth open and hates him for his loud typing and mild-mannered/passive-aggressive coffee sips….

I figure it's the English translation's way of burying the lede on the whole Atlantis thing.

And, given how Escaflowne views Europe, potentially signal the western world's obsession with the neoclassical... since that's Dornkirk's whole deal. His view of the future comes through a romanticised, mythologised ideal past, much like any fascist. The real enlightenment of the series comes through accepting the reality and responsibilities of the present, on which a future may be built, honestly, openly, communally.

Aaaanyway. I stumbled upon the given name Bólkōn in a Greek-Spanish dictionary;

For my own writing (and fun) one of the things I pay attention to is the transformation of sounds/letters over time or between regions, and the way sounds are transcribed/transliterated into languages that don't share them. Using J/Y when translating Й, for example.

G/Q/K is a big one when trying to translate Arabic into English. K is often approximated for the hard g, and the Arabic q sound, low in the throat, doesn't appear in English, so either of the other two letters may tag in.

When it comes to V/B/P/PH/F, very few languages have historically employed all of them because they're incredibly similar to one another. V pronounced as B in Spanish attests to this— in Medieval Spanish there was no conventional orthography and they'd switch places randomly. There was also no V or K or Q in Irish prior to colonisation— our V equivalent is mh/bh, V is present only in loanwords. Irish C is always hard (but has broad or slender pronunciation) negating the need for K.

A name like "Van" or "Folken" is using sounds without 1:1 parallels, so you may see it written as "Ban" or "Paan" or even as different as "Volkern." In these cases, there's usually an agreed-upon romanisation to maintain continuity, but when it comes to languages that use completely different alphabets for sounds not present or accounted for in English, it's rounding up to what's closest. Not "incorrect" so much as "not consensus."

[φ] represented a separate sound from f, and [β] a sound separate from v, but this is what they've come to represent in modern Greek. one semi-relevant example (to me) is φανάριον, fanarion, and φαναρίου, fanariu, which means light/torch/lantern and is a diminutive of the word phanos, meaning bright/shining/resplendent.

You know, there's something really interesting about the planet Mercury. This might be a little convoluted, but bear with me...

Its perihelion (the point in orbit at which a body is closest to the sun) should, according to Newtonian laws of gravitation, advance by 531 arcseconds per century. In the nineteenth century, however, it was observed that the actual advance is 574.

This is because Mercury, being the closest planet, has its orbit most affected by the warping of spacetime near the Sun.

Q: WHAT IS THIS??!

A: This is an alphabetically sorted list of all mythic creatures I could find on Wikipedia. The names are (mostly) identical to the name that will bring up the wiki page.*

Q: All mythic creatures on wikipedia???

A: There are a few omissions: I found there were too many lake monsters so those I didn't exhaustively include. Wikipedia has a lot more information about Greek individual figures than individual figures from other cultures (like Achilles or Glauce or Dioxippe or Ajax) and when those figures are members of a mythic group (amazons, nymphs, etc.) I included them in this list, but the list may skew in favour of Greek mythic women with fewer male figures. Also I have included some gods, goddesses and non-binary deities but just like with the lake monsters, did not include most of the Wiki pages on godheads of the world. But the list should be fairly exhaustive when it comes to heavenly beings (elves of alfheim, gandharvas, horae and so on) who serve the gods in their divine abodes.

Q: Why are hobbits on the list? Tolkien made those up, right?

A: Well technically there are lists of creatures from folklore and one of those lists, which Tolkien came across, lists hobbits. It doesn't explain what hobbits are and they aren't documented anywhere else, but that may be the origin of the word hobbit.

Q: Why are some of these not actual creatures?

A: folktales that make mention of unique mythic creatures have been included. For example "The Red Ettin" is a English folktale that features herds of two-headed bulls and cows. In other cases, Wikipedia has pages like "Aboriginal Australian Creatures" or "Abenaki & Mi'kmaq beings" which are worth looking at because they provide more mythic creatures that don't have individual pages.

Q: Why are some entries styled "Savanello - Salvanello" or "Dwarf - Dwarves"

A: one of the terms is the singular and the other the plural. The list is a bit peculiar, sorry.

Q: How would you recommend this list is used?

A: You can use it any way you like, just keep in mind that some beings on this list are sacred and ideally try to be culturally sensitive about that. For example, some Ojibwe people are not exactly happy that one of their unnameable spirits has been publicly named, misspelled, attached to anti-Native stereotypes (see also here) and then completely misrepresented and trivialized as a horror monster in pop culture and so the "wendigo" comes with all that baggage, as do many other creatures on this list.

Usually if a creature is from a Neolithic / Bronze Age / Iron Age culture like Egypt or North & South Mesopotamia (Akkadian, Assyrian & Sumerian, Babylonian) there is no one who is going to raise valid ethical concerns around the use of your creature.

Similarly, if something is a generic fantasyland creature (elf, dwarf, dragon, ghost, giant, mermaid etc.) or from Greek and Roman sources (sirens, minotaurs, catoblepas) or medieval bestiaries (hydrus, iaculus) you can flesh those out with more research, but I don't think you will run into ethical problems.

But with a lot of other creatures, outreach to that community has value, because otherwise its not just a fantasy work being authored, but also some serious inter-cultural tensions. Stephenie Meyer, who decided to add Qileute shapeshifters into Twilight but never consulted Qileute and doesn't support their community in any way, is a example. There is no need to follow it.

THE CALL

Warning, discussions of Christianity

I am going to be pulling from personal experience on this one.  My experience growing up was with a Baptist church, so be aware that this is the flavor of religion I will be discussing.  I’m not religious, but I don’t care to insert myself in another person’s religious life or beliefs.  But:  thinking about how we got the cross cufflink, I started thinking about the religious language that is used in the Baptist tradition. 

I can’t believe it has taken me this long to get here, but there is a lot of language that is used in Welcome Home that is also used in Christianity.

 

I am going to start abbreviating Baptist Christianity to “BC.”  So, in BC, God gives you a calling.  A calling is some message, verbal or non-verbal, sometimes even just a feeling, that lets you know what God would like you to do.  In particular, people are called to be a preacher or a preacher’s wife, or deacons, etc.  I can’t imagine the numbers of people who have attempted to receive this messages from God.  I never felt any kind of calling, though I did know people who have had that experience.

BC inserts this phone language into their own discussions of religious experience, like: 

Jesus is calling, will you answer?

Answer the call

Jesus calling, how well are you listening?

There are also biblical references of God calling people to him. 

These are examples of the language use.  When we think about this in the context of WH, we are literally being called.  We have had multiple phone calls from Wally, and maybe even one from home (if the one audio clip counts as a call.)  Wally can call and talk to us, and share his thoughts, but we are unable to talk to him.  We have seen others who are getting the call, but can’t pick up.  Q does answer the call, though we get the feeling that they considered it either foolish or a big mistake.  Wally signs off, “always know that I love you, very much.”  That language is very reminiscent of descriptions of God’s love (new testament God, anyway. 

Closely related to this idea is that Christians generally believe that Jesus lives in their hearts.  There appears to be textual references to this.  Interpretations are different on this.  Some take it more literally, like you have a personal, physical connection to God through the spirit, heart, chest.  Some think of it more like a metaphor, God is your heart, a kind of mental connection as we consider the heart the seat of love.  There are a wide variety of references to Jesus/God in the heart:

Accept Jesus into your heart (this is the saying for being “saved” in the protestant tradition)

God’s home in your heart (straight up comparison there)

Home is where the heart is (is actually related to the bible)

"That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love". 

“Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him.” “if a man loves me…we will come unto him and make our abode with him.”

Wally is also strongly associated with a heart.  He has hearts on his shoes, and Home has a heart underneath.  (Barnaby also has heart paw pads, but not sure this is relevant at this point.) 

In the Homewarming record, Howdy says “ It’s about warmin’ the home through their heart!”

You find Wally’s recording about not being able to see you despite us drawing his eyes by clicking the 3 heart drawings. (And there are several doodled hearts around.)  A drawn heart takes us to the sound clip of “you-1.”   “Can you see me? That’s okay if you can’t. Don’t worry, I know you’re there. You know I’m here too. I will talk to you.”

On r/welcomehomeneighbor, u/irrelevant_advices suggests that maybe the heart marks those who are possessed/influenced by Home.  This is the best theory for that drawing that I think I have seen.  He is painting it blue, which would make it harder to see. 

On r/welcomhomearg, u/Lunami714 posts Wally’s hidden phone clip, and we know that this clip has a heartbeat throughout, louder and fainter. 

Wally says “on this funny phone of mine”

Do you know who I am?  (This is a strong theme in Christianity)

Wally tells us he knows us and sees us. 

The phrase “let me in”

Do you know who I am has several links to religion. 

“God forgive them, for they know not what they do”

Peter denying Jesus three times

“You have searched me, Lord, and you know me,”

"Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.”

Jesus’s story has a lot of knowing him and not knowing him.  Also, people who preach at strangers phrase it that way, “do you know Jesus?”  I have been on the receiving end of that one. 

The “let me in” phrase is also echoed quite a bit in BC. 

Let Jesus into your heart is something I heard a lot.  The way to achieve this, is to remember your ABC’s (Ask for forgiveness, Believe in God, Confess your sins)

X (Jesus) is your best friend:

He said, “You are my friends if you do what I command you” (John 15:14). Maybe leading to the whole “Jesus is my Homeboy” thing.  Lots of listings about Jesus being a friend/best friend, including children’s songs. 

Neighbor:  Used in the bible as a term for other people

Love they neighbor as you love thyself

Don’t covet neighbor’s stuff

Show hospitality

Share God’s truth with neighbors

I will leave it there, as this is getting long, and bring some more Christian symbolism later.

- in agape's toyhou.se page it says that miah "is crazy in love with him". how reliable is the statement? as in, is he ACTUALLY in love or is there a misinterpretation on everyone's favorite cupid on his part?

- i remember from VEEERY old relationship charts that javier was originally the fourth member of the rock band instead of nio. was it straight-up changed or is there... Lore... behind it now (i.e. javier did an oopsie and got kicked out, or he left due to creative differences, or something of the sort)?

Q.1. It’s sort of both!!! Since Agape is a high-ranking Cupid, pretty much the highest ranking one underneath Venus herself, just being near him can charm someone instantly! Funnily enough Miah’s actually immune to Agape’s Cupid charm, however Miah’s also weak to a cute face and (I have no other way to put this) booty/thighs so Miah still has a thing for him… Miahs weird though in the sense that he’s never ‘in love’ and is super shallow/falls for people pretty easily… boy is never thinking w/ his brain ill just leave it at that 😶 Agape’s dramatic and conceited though so he won’t pass up the chance to say someone’s head over heels for him LMAO

Q.2. You deserve like. A veterans discount for remembering this. THE REAL TRUTH is that I wasn’t rly rocking w/ Javi being in there and just replaced him but to be honest putting lore behind it would be gas. He’s such an old OC that I have yet to revamp for my current ocverse but he is in my mind constantly I love that guy🥹 He has an ‘evil dark overlord’ complex but he’s actually a softie that likes baking and he’s lactose intolerant. Pressure Original Character - The Dracea (folklore-inspired)

Looks like a smiling face with some long lashes and has a dark purple hair-like trail around itself. Appears throughout the run in areas with water spouting from damaged pipes. This is in order to make it somewhat easier to sea that there is something off. Only visible in runs with at least two players. She disguises as items in drawers and when an user takes it, she takes the user as a host to appear like the user, yet the user is gone. Unless the user is revived, dracea roams around behind the other team mate(s) disguised as the initial user only moving a bit slower and tries to take the other user(s) alongside.

Sebastian would sell an eel ointment or eel fat that one could use in order to see dracea disguised as an item, appearing in the form of a golden ring, jewelry, or something like that.

A not-so-good thing would be when dracea would disguise as an item in a shop, for example upon arriving at Sebastian when one would try to buy something. Shell no!

Thought about this when re-reading the folktales about the dracæ. Loosely retold, they are an Scottish freshwater-person who can transform into desired objects like jewelry, golden rings or cups, yet also wooden dishware. Usually, the dracæ would float above the water surface as an object. When a mortal would get hold of a dracæ-turned item, one would be taken underwater to serve them in their abodes either in a lake or river. Upon touching one's eye with the ointment made of a serpent's grease, one would be able to see how the dracæ seemingly exist among society in the forms of mortal human beings.

Initially in France, the drac is quite the same freshwater-person, capable of shapeshifting into objects like wooden dishware and golden cups or rings to lure victims. It is capable of assuming a mortal human form, lurking and shopping in markets ashore. One of drac's true forms supposedly looked like large purple blobs floating above a water surface. Other versions tell of the drac's forms comprising of animals like a horse or dragon. One was able to see the dracs by touching one's eye with eel pasty aka. eel fat.

a :: hmmm honestly nowhere in particular, sometimes listening to a certain song gives me some inspiration, other times i just make up scenarios in my head and write them,, it varies

a :: i have a bunch of other hobbies that i enjoy: listening to music, singing and learning new languages (currently i’m trying to learn japanese by myself but it’s a bit difficult 😥)
