NEW OVERNIGHT: Former Veteran Music Radio Anchor 'Norma Marco' of DZMM died [#TeleRadyoSerbisyoEXCLUSIVE]
Tumblr media
QUEZON, MANILA -- A former veteran DZMM-AM Radyo Patrol 630 music anchor 'Ms. Norma Marco' of 'Remember When…' and substitute late night radio host of 'Private Nights' has died Thursday (August 15th, 2024) after four (4) years of cancellation, instead of hiatus by mid-March 2020, due to previously anticipated nationwide congressional franchise shutdown of ABS-CBN with a former Philippine president 'Rodrigo Roa Duterte' and a global pandemic of Coronavirus Disease-19 (CoViD-19).
Before the rebrand and a callsign change of Radyo 630 in Metro Manila and around the Philippines at DZMM Teleradyo (now officially rebranded as 'TeleRadyo Serbisyo'), a music radio programme plays music of the 60s, 70s and 80s, and it was all started in the late-mid August 2013 after 'Yesterday: Sunday Edition' with the late-Richard Enriquez.
Song requests and dedications in the adlib-like segment making nostalic memories in music. It was named after the song from 'The Platters' of the same name, and is also their theme song of the music programme. Rod Izon and Reggie Valdez are the last weekend substitute music radio anchors in pre-Radyo 630 days.
Her health condition came too late to inquire, and she was aged at 76 y/o at Veronica Memorial Chapel in Libertad, Pasay City, National Capital Region on Saturday night at 6pm for the public viewing on August 17th, and is laid to rest at Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City, this said region by next Thursday morning (August 22nd, 2024).
OneNETtv Channel and TeleRadyo Serbisyo: Dumaguete & Manila expresses its condolences to their families left in her legacy of music selections by Ms. Marco.

Believing Without Seeing
By Ralph R. Sarza
Original final script | April 23, 2023 Preaching for Open Table MCC | Gospel Reading: Luke 24:13-35
Now, Luke states that the eyes of the disciples “were kept from recognizing Jesus.”
Now, this is actually a funny and ironic scene because, kung meron mang nakakaalam sa lahat ng mga bagay na nangyari sa Jerusalem, that was the stranger in front of them — that was Jesus.
So ang lola n’yo, patay-malisya: “What things?” They replied, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a PROPHET (emphasis sa PROPHET)… and how our chief priests and leaders handed Him over to be condemned to death and crucified him.”
I would like to emphasize the use of the word PROPHET, instead of MESSIAH, because it’s an implication that the two disciples had lost their faith in Jesus. In fact, sabi sa verse 21, “We had hoped that He was the one to redeem Israel.” HAD HOPED. Past perfect tense.
And before I go on, I want to validate the disbelief of the two disciples. For indeed, we have witnessed numerous instances that have left us disenchanted and disheartened, ranging from the complexities of family dynamics, the intricacies of financial matters, and the often turbulent realm of Philippine politics.
LAST MONTH, sa loob lamang ng isang linggo, actually sa loob lamang ng dalawang magkasunod na araw, na-reject ako sa dalawang in-apply-an kong trabahong bet na bet ko talagang makuha. It was a humbling experience, it made me realize that I am not the best and the world doesn’t revolve around me, but it was also a very frustrating experience. Ang sakit kasi breadwinner ako, three years na kaming walang pay raise dahil sa ABS-CBN shutdown, at oras ang kalaban ko. I need a better-paying job, not today, not yesterday, but months ago.
“MAY DIYOS BA TALAGA?!”
So the two disciples became doubtful after they learned that the body of Jesus was nowhere to be found: Verses 22-24: “Some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find His body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that JESUS WAS ALIVE. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Him.”
Sinabihan na silang JESUS WAS ALIVE, pero they still chose not to believe and just leave. So naimbyrena si Hesus at inawardan sila. Verse 25: “Then He said to them, ‘Oh, how foolish you are and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into His glory?’”
Nung malapit na sila sa Emmaus, nagpatay-malisya ulit si Hesus, and He walked ahead as if He were going on. Pero pinigilan Siya ng dalawang desipulo. “Stay with us because the day is nearly over.”
“Were not our hearts burning within us while He was talking to us on the road, while He was opening the scriptures to us?” That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem, and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and He has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road and how He had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
The story of the Road to Emmaus prompts us to contemplate the profound impact of encountering the risen Christ and underscores the importance of community in our personal journey of transformation. It reminds us to actively seek guidance and support from others and to remain receptive to the possibility of encountering the Divine in unexpected and unconventional ways.
The story of the Road to Emmaus is a compelling reminder that the Resurrection of Jesus transcends mere historical significance, but rather represents an enduring invitation to encounter the Divine and undergo transformation. It enlightens us to the unpredictable ways in which the risen Christ can manifest in our lives, be it through chance encounters with strangers or through introspective reflection. Embracing this invitation sets us on a transformative journey of growth, change, and renewal, affording us the opportunity to flourish into a life imbued with deep meaning and purpose.
Finally, the story of the Road to Emmaus reminds us that, if we have unwavering faith in Jesus, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, not even death can make us part.

Country of Nothings and the Privilege of Grief
Tumblr media
This is the one where my tito dies.
I remember many details about his death: like the color of his urn and how my tita placed his glasses beside a picture of him smiling. I remember some points less clearly. I know he died in the summer months of 2021, but I don’t know if he died in April or in May. And I forgot the exact words that my mom used when she told me that he had died— if she mentioned his COVID, or if I just made that connection myself.  What I remember best, though, is the grief.
Grief was quiet— which is not to say it was mild or gentle. It wasn’t. Grief was quiet, like how I’d lie down to sleep in a silent room only to remember that I couldn’t remember the last time that I talked to my tito. I’d be looking at my phone while I was waiting for class to start and my browser would be open to the very last philosopher that my tito recommended. I’d be sitting at my desk during an empty moment, and I’d realize that I had forgotten the sound of my tito’s laugh.
This feeling, more than anything, is what Alfonso Manalastas wants to memorialize in Country of Nothings.
The poem itself is the record of a very specific period in Philippine history. The dramatic situation is set against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic and its mounting deaths— thus the running count of fifteen hundred and one, hundred and two— joined with the shutdown of the ABS-CBN corporation. Here, then, is a Filipino who is trying to find meaning in the mismanagement of a country. Here is a persona who is trying to make sense of senseless deaths, rationalizing an irrationality and realizing what a privilege it is to still be here, to breathe and enjoy this grief. In telling this, the poem juxtaposes the story of an individual sadness with the tragedy of an entire country: Headlines looking more and more like obituaries / Staggering from their appointed places on the paper.
This piece revolves around historicity. Every death and every pitch-black TV is caused by a national event or an international pandemic, respectively, and so the poem repeats, You recount the dead until you fumble over the math… You recount the dead until you fumble over the myth because these are not new events. This is not the first time that our country has experienced the crippling of free speech or the spread of a deadly virus, and it will not be the last, if only because history bears repetition.
However, for all that the poem is grounded in its context, its language explores the timelessness of mourning. On the streets, / more nothing. And from nothingness, you muster / nothing. The sensation of emptiness is not exclusive to the year 2020. Ever since injustice and ever since war and ever since illness, people have suffered loss and recounted the dead, but Manalastas' greatest achievement here is writing grief in the vernacular of this time and in the voice of this people while still retaining the universal numbness of death. And when they try to devour us with a hunger / so infinite, we will wholly surrender to them nothing.
So the poem ends with a surrender— which is itself a kind of silence. I find this fitting, if only because silence is another response to grief. Sitting in the dark until the numbers blur and your TV becomes static. Lying on a bed and trying to reconstruct a voice using fragments of memories.
I'll tell you now that, in my better moments, I believe in an afterlife. I'm a Christian, which means that most of the time I like the idea of heaven and I look forward to the day when I ascend and I can finally ask my tito, Why did you leave me? And he'd give me the answer that I'm waiting for.
In my worse moments, though, I imagine asking that same question and receiving no reply. Nothing but the hum of a broken TV, and my grief left unanswered— as if to say that there are far worse things than the quiet.
A/N: The full text of Alfonso Manalastas' Country of Nothings was published in 2021 in Cha: An Asian Literary Journal over here in this link. Also, this is just my English homework. Hi, Sir Andy!

BGYO: Aces of P-pop
Tumblr media
Who is BGYO?
BGYO is a five-member P-Pop boy group under ABS-CBN’s Star Magic consisting of Akira, JL, Mikki, Gelo, and Nate. The group’s name is not a shortened version of the Tagalog word "bagyo" which means storm or a tropical cyclone. BGYO is an acronym for "Becoming the Change, Going Further, You and I, Originally Filipino."
During their pre-debut, BGYO is also referred to as SHA Boys or Star Hunt Academy Boys. They trained for more than two years with Korean coaches before debuting on January 30, 2021, with their single "The Light." The members themselves wrote the Filipino lyrics to reflect their experiences in training.
You can watch the official music video of "The Light" below!
youtube
BGYO Members Profile
Tumblr media
Angelo Troy Rivera, also known as Gelo, is the leader of BGYO. He was born on April 18, 2001. He was competing with his dance team, called A-Team, in the Philippines and other countries before making his debut as an idol.
Tumblr media
Akira Morishita is the lead vocalist of BGYO. He was born on April 27, 2001. He is an Indie Filipino Actor in the Philippines and is known for starring in Sundalong Kanin (2014), Alienasyon (2014), All of Me (2015), and ‘Tol (2019). He recently co-starred with Francine Diaz in the teen comedy miniseries Bola-Bola. Also, he has appeared in a few commercials.
Tumblr media
John Lloyd Toreliza, also known as JL, is the main vocalist of BGYO. He was born on September 17, 2001. In 2018, he joined "The Clash," a singing competition that aired on national television and had Regine Velasquez-Alcasid as one of the judges. He did not make it to the finals, unfortunately.
Tumblr media
Michael Claver Jr., also known as Mikki, is the main rapper of BGYO. He was born on February 13, 2002. He was the last person to audition for Star Hunt Academy to get a scholarship.
Tumblr media
Nathaniel Porcalla, also known as Nate, is the main dancer and the youngest of BGYO. He was born on June 06, 2003. He competed in World of Dance Philippines in 2019, but he did not advance to the finals.
Accomplishments of BGYO
BGYO has taken the world by storm since making its debut in 2021. They are renowned for notable vocals, synchronized dance moves, commanding stage presence, and undeniable visuals. With that, the group is regarded as "P-Pop's Breakout Act of 2021" and has earned their so-called "Aces of P-Pop" in just a year.
In the first two years of their career, BGYO released thirteen singles, seven B-sides, nine soundtrack singles, two promotional singles, two remix singles, and eleven music videos. In addition, they have been holding concerts both locally and globally, making them the proud flag bearers of P-pop worldwide. The group was featured by Privé Alliance, an upscale streetwear line that lists Baekhyun, a Korean singer, as its co-creative director. They have also been nominated for and won several awards locally and internationally. The members keep their feet on the ground despite the achievements they have been receiving. They always honor their ACEs, or their fans, for their unending love and support since the beginning.
BGYO continues to dominate the world, representing P-pop on the scene.
Why did I choose this topic for my blog?
I chose this topic to feature BGYO. What their background is, how they overcame challenges, and who are the persons behind the title, "Aces of P-Pop?" I have been their fan since before their debut. I saw how much effort and time they invested in their preparation for their performances. They almost couldn't debut because of the ABS-CBN shutdown. But thankfully, the management didn’t disappoint them.
P-pop groups used to be made fun of because people thought they were copying K-pop. This is why many groups have disbanded. Nevertheless, the biggest thanks go to highly trained Filipino talents like SB19, who revived P-pop on the mainstream scene. Upon BGYO's debut, P-pop and other P-pop groups like BINI, Alamat, and VXON get more opportunities to gain international recognition. They prove that P-pop is Filipino pop music rather than a K-pop copycat. Therefore, P-pop—the embarrassing subgenre of OPM or Original Pilipino Music we previously knew—became an instant sensation, the reason why new P-pop groups are constantly making their debut nowadays.
Many people have found reason in BGYO, especially the ACEs. Akira frequently reminds the fans to treat themselves with the same love that they give to their members. Hopefully, with the help of this blog, I can make you understand the journey of BGYO. Remember that you can become whoever you want to be.
Stay updated with BGYO by following their social media accounts! We will be glad to welcome you to our fandom.

Always a Passion Never a Profession
While principles around journalism have improved, careers in journalism are still being fraught with difficulty in the country, as reported by Al Jazeera Media Institute. It is truly disheartening to know how Filipino journalists remains to be under the threat towards their security, working conditions, and unjust opportunity which become the grounds why maintaining the value and substance of journalism as a profession is still a problem in the Philippines.
Uncertainty towards security under the Duterte-Marcos administration is one to be viewed as the underlying issue that averts people in aiming a career in the media industry. A data from the National Union of Journalists (NUJP) shows that a total of 27 journalists have been killed from Duterte to Marcos Jr’s administration, which have placed the Filipino journalists under threats, red-tagging, and culture of impunity.
This is not only limited in terms of physical safety but also in terms of their employment security. The issue of job security in the local journalism field has been around for some time but it became more obvious with the ABS-CBN Shutdown back in 2020 wherein thousands of people who work in media were left unemployed because of the shutdown that resulted from a political conflict, bringing us back to the previous reason why pushing through the field of journalism as a profession in the Philippines is quite challenging.
Moreover, in a report of the Southeast Asia Media Freedom in 2018: the greatest threat Filipino journalists still face are low wages and poor working conditions. The field requires a lot of work, pressure, and time; yet, it is questionable to hear that most media companies do not provide hazard pay, not to mention the compensation to journalists assigned to cover hazardous assignments. This too adds to the fact why most people of practicality become highly doubtful in pursuing journalism as they tend to see it to be a demanding career and more inclined to passion than money.
Nevertheless, as Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) bridges the gap between science and liberal art for many years, it is safe to say that journalism until today has still seen a decline in manpower throughout the years due to a lack of exposure with regards to its necessity to society. Seeing journalism as a “passion”, but never a "profession", people tend to overlook and undermined it as a potential career since there aren't many courses available at various educational levels that highlights the importance of the industry.
Thus, if the government gives proper recognition to the principles and roles of journalism in our country, it will heavily change the way it is viewed as a career. In addition, we believe that more scholarships under the funding of the government should be given to social science and liberal art students to encourage the future generations to give importance to the news, or even consider journalism as a career. The curriculum should make students believe that journalism is not a mere leap of faith but is on equal footing to the sciences when it comes to its value in the country.
We believe that in a society where journalism is valued and treated equally to other highly exposed areas like the sciences, issues like security, opportunity, and working conditions would not be tolerated. At last, strengthening the ground towards the underlying idea that journalism is not just a mere passion but indeed a profession fulfilled by a strong element of principle and service for the public.

Midweek Storytime
Okay, storytime while I’m having late lunch =)
A month ago, I was surprised to know one of my closest friends did not know about an ~unfortunate~ bullying incident I encountered in ABS back in 2015. He was a former Kapamilya too, but he devoted his last years in Marketing before resigning. Had to do a rundown and let him in on the details—even the graphic ones. The minute I was done narrating, he opened his social media accounts and unfriended the person I had an encounter with. Yep, just like that. Just one breezy click as if it’s the most natural thing in the world to do.
Last night, a sorority sister messaged me out of nowhere and told me she unfollowed a former friend who betrayed me back in 2020, at the height of the pandemic and at the verge of the ABS-CBN shutdown. Yep, it was that easy for her too. I never asked this from her nor from anyone else, but she did it anyway.
Some might say this is so superficial, trivial, and even sheer nonsense. I totally respect that. I do. But I feel and believe otherwise. Friends who are THIS LOYAL are so rare these days. Friends who would actually turn their backs on and delete people from their own lives—because these people have done you wrong at some point and to some extent. No questions asked, no hesitation, no reservation. They just decide right then and there that they value you more, and that the wrong things done to you would never sit well with them. Ever.
And you know what else? If and when you experience friendships ending, or have trusted friends eventually betray you—I hope you find your “core people” who would hold your hand while you navigate your way out of the pain and grief. They are special. They are beyond valuable. They are as extraordinary as they come.
Before I conclude this, let me tell you what the most surprising thing could be through it all: there’s a possibility that this magnitude of loyalty won’t even come from the friends you deeply expect it from. It can come from the friends you least expect to give it to you. In any case, you will be overwhelmed by both ends of the friendship spectrum. Be wary, and take heart. All will be well in the end.
And as I say time and time again, I’m so thankful for my people. My soulmates. Wala talaga sa dami, guys. NASA KALIDAD.
In English, quality > quantity. Always.

The ghost of the ABS CBN shutdown still haunts me. I still remember the people, the news values, the team spirit, my former team, the training, the mentors, the trust, the opportunities, among others.
I resigned because I was not financially secured to live with the repercussions of the shutdown.
But trust me,I am still mourning the loss up to now. There are nights where I see myself wanting to leave journalism for a better paying job where I won’t have to struggle this much.
Why do we have to hurt so much when we only want to tell stories?
Why do we have to be questioned for the way we look, the way we dress and the way we interact with people when we only want to live our purpose?
Why do we have to be looked down upon for being inexperienced, for being young and for being a woman in the field? Aren’t we supposed to be taught and trained?
I might be okay in where I am right now but I’ve been so much better - and that is what haunts me every fucking day.

Since 1953 up to the present the colorful history of ABS-CBN is undeniable, the achievement that the institution was able to gain through dedication and hardship. Recognition from various national and international organization and being the biggest broadcasting and communications network or so-called media giant of the Philippines speaks for how did ABS-CBN make its way to success.
In 1972, the declaration of Martial Law, turned the light off for ABS-CBN, but then, after the People Power Revolution it goes back to the service of the Filipino, during the martial law the assertion of the people are “we lost press freedom.” “there was censorship.” and the like signifies that importance of the network. The foundation of the network is challenge and strengthen by time.
With free press comes with the search for truth. However, the guarantee of truth is being restricted if a warning and intimidation is present. For courage to survive it takes a huge risk, even the existence of different media companies sometimes the truth is not directly shown because of fear.
Breaking news! ABS-CBN shutdown, the network went off air last May 5, 2020 after the National Telecommunication Commission issued a cease and desist order (CDO) against the network following the expiration of its legislative franchise last May 4, 2020, amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic where millions of jobs is at risk because of cessation. Nothing more execrable than to announce its own farewell.
During the legislative hearing for its franchise renewal, the network passed through the hole of the needle as the members of the house exercise legislative inquiry in aid of legislation a step on determining the fate of the network, relevant and irrelevant issues arise from inquiry. The favorable and adverse rulings of court to the issue where ABS-CBN involve, and the pronunciation of other government agencies ensuring the legislative branch that the network did not violate any law, is a direct and visible adherence of the network to rule of law, despite of this facts, emotions and political will goes beyond the acceptable.
Justice come with careful and balance decision, to serve justice facts are weight’s due respect.
Article III Section 4 of the 1987 Constitution states that: No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of expression, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition the government for redress of grievances. Freedom refers to the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. Article XI Section 1 of the 1987 Constitution states that: Public office is a public trust. Public officers and employees must at all times be accountable to the people, serve them with utmost responsibility, integrity, loyalty, and efficiency, act with patriotism and justice, and lead modest lives. The public officials are the representative of the people and the people of the Republic of the Philippines are the sovereign.
July 10, 2020 the House Committee on Legislative Franchise the resolution to deny the ABS-CBN franchise application was adopted with seventy (70) committee members voting in favor of the resolution, eleven (11) against, and with one (1) abstention and two (2) inhibitions the bill was junked, or put into lay on the table, indefinitely.
What do we have? Rule of law or rule of man? Democracy or democrazy?
