Buggy Headcanons ˗ˏˋ꒰🍒꒱ˎˊ˗
★ — OPLA Buggy the Clown ♡
Tumblr media Tumblr media
﹢he's the type of guy to follow the "i hate everyone but you" trope. the second he sees you, his heart lights up and he drops everything he's doing to go talk to you, even just for a moment. he could be heated, yelling at his crew, but when he sees you, he smiles and drops everything until you leave.
﹢he's a sucker for cuddles. absolutely loves them. if he's had a long and stressful day, he'll just fall on top of you and pass out. he loves to lay on you. his head on your chest as he rub his back or play with his hair. he definitely snores. not too loud but not quiet either. sometimes it'll get loud and you'll need to wake him up to get some decent sleep x)
﹢both a morning/night person. he goes to bed late and wakes up early. he doesn't get too much sleep because of how busy he is. sometimes the only time he gets with you is when you're both in me. if he's not deathly tired, he'll lay on his side with his head propped up on his hand as he listens to you talk about your day. your voice soothes him.
﹢he's very insecure. lowkey hates himself. his ego is forced and a facade for others so he can intimidate them. he hates his nose. he hates the subject being brought up in any conversation. when he was younger, before meeting shanks, he would wear a mask to hide his nose.
﹢i know everyone is like "buggy is a sex god and dominant and-" no. sorry. he is extremely insecure. it took him a while to show you who he really was. he lets himself unfold with you. he is himself with you. his true self.
﹢the crossbones on his forehead and upper cheek are tattooed on but he paints his face with makeup. his eyelashes are naturally long but he does wear falsies to accentuate it and make himself look more like a clown. his hair is naturally long but he tends to tuck and pin it back underneath the striped bandana.
﹢he likes things to be equal during sex. no top or bottom. as cringe as it may sound, he loves to call it 'love-making'. no fucking or hooking up - rather making love with one another. he worships you, especially in the bedroom. constant kisses and praise. loves doing all of the work, especially if you're stressed out. his favorite position is when you're both laying down on your sides and your holding each other while he makes love to you.
﹢he's a strict believer in taking care of you. pays for meals, surprises you with presents, doesn't want you working- he wants you to be completely comfortable and satisfied. someone as special like you should never even lift a finger. he has it all covered.
﹢loves to let you do his makeup. sometimes he'll be reading the newspaper while you're painting his eyes or lips. it's like he's an actor and you're his makeup artist. he can never get the lines as precise and as neat as you can. once you're finished, he gives you a kiss on your cheek, leaving a red mark. this happens every time.
﹢he's a goofy drunk, very humorous and silly. but as he sobers up, he becomes extremely clingy and doesn't let go of you.
﹢in the public eye, he acts very possessive of you, like he's the one in control. he always needs to be touching you. if you're apart, he'll send a hand your way and hold yours while he's busy. preferably his off-hand so he can still get some work done.
﹢people are scared of him for obvious reasons but when it's just the two of you, he's a big baby. sometimes he'll even use a certain voice whenever he talks to you. you tease him in public, telling others he's a completely different person when you two are alone. he laughs, calls you crazy, and plays it off.
﹢he loves no one more than he loves you.
﹢whenever he performs a show, he always gets you a seat up front. makes sure you can kick your feet up, your popcorn is always full, and you're enjoying yourself. whenever he pulls someone up on the set to help with one of his acts, you're almost always the person he picks.
﹢his favorite moments with you are when you're sitting on the deck of his ship, everyone else is asleep, and the two of you are counting the stars together and admiring one another.
﹢he loves to eat. if you two are eating together, he'll ask for the rest of yours and then some. messy eater, too.
﹢he's a great listener. loves to hear about your day.
﹢he loves to give you massages. just loves to pamper you, in general. your feet will be kicked up on his lap as he rubs them and you vent about your day or your laying on your back and he's above you, massaging your shoulders and hips.
﹢he just loves you. and he is a sweet and delicate man so treat him like one. he's the type of guy to sacrifice the world for you, not you for the world.

today in more zolu thoughts: yet another thing I find fascinating about zoro and luffy's relationship, which I believe the LA managed to capture pretty well despite the differences between it and the og source material, is that while zoro's capacity for loyalty and devotion where luffy's concerned are insane (the all-encompassing, heartfelt, lay down my life and dreams for you, follow you until death or the very end of everything kind of crazy), they're not entirely unconditional per se. the condition here being that he has to measure up to zoro's standards - that luffy has to prove himself a man worthy of following.
there are plenty examples of this in the manga, but I'll stick to where it and opla intersect. so manga!zoro pretty much stands firm with this condition when he agrees to follow luffy, warning him about not getting in the way of zoro's dream right away. opla zoro is a lot more reluctant to join in comparison, and he just seemingly goes along with the whole thing in a more "might as well" manner; even so, there's these few subtle moments where you can see him being struck awe by luffy's faith in himself/his dream (the dinner at kaya's) and showing exactly why he's a "different" kind of pirate (ie freeing the folks from orange town).
still, the most pivotal moment is zoro's fight with mihawk in both cases. this is where luffy has to really prove himself to zoro, for the first time. because talk of dreams and promises and not hindering them is nice and all, but can luffy really stand by what he says when push comes to shove? when the life of someone he cares about is on the line? and man. the answer is yes.
in the manga, by stopping johnny and yosaku from intervening and refusing to do so himself as well, even though he was deeply upset by zoro getting hurt, luffy proved he wouldn't go back on his word nor betray zoro's trust and the faith he had placed in him. in a similar fashion, opla luffy letting zoro go ahead with the duel despite his own apprehension/doubts and nami questioning both of their choices, is what finally led to zoro recognizing him as his captain out loud and accepting his role as a first mate.
I just think it's interesting that these two kind of make each other walk on a tightrope. only the world's greatest swordsman can stand by the pirate king's side. the pirate king can have the world's greatest swordsman by his side, if he proves himself worthy of it. but the best part? for me, it's that zoro and luffy are able to challenge one another this way (or set the bar that high) because they absolutely believe the other can rise up to it and beyond.

yah I said I was done talking about klahadore. yah i'm a liar. bc I rewatched his monologue 1. I think he felt more fondness for kaya than he thought he was capable of (perhaps more than he's felt for anyone) AND it can/does coexist with his resentment towards her 2. the speech was more a blatant reflection of his own self hatred and he was talking about himself. he says "isn't it exhausting putting on airs? pretending we're better than we are? you've had ever opportunity this world has to offer. what have you done with your life? nothing. absolutely nothing." I find it SO hard to believe he's talking just about her. because he's the one who loves fine things. who dresses nice, even as a pirate. who just might have grown up with money. and what did he do? become a pirate and despise the life he created so much that he faked his own death. he trapped himself and accomplished "nothing". the whole plan was to kill kaya, but both in the anime/manga and opla he didn't want to be the one to do it. his hands are so bloody & dirty. if he hates her so much -- why didn't he want to be the one to do it? when he's mocking her, his eyes are welled. he's such a little fucked up evil freak with overly elaborate plans who's so emotionally stunted he probably couldn't decipher happy from sad its crazy

i think the general atmosphere of positivity did a lot to repress any criticisms people might have had of opla really. I remember the first time I tried watching it I was just really turned off by it. The characters didn't feel like themselves, the themes were too on the nose and the overall it seemed less silly then anime/manga op? But then I watched people's reviews of it and they were all completely positive, heaping praises on it. So I decided that was just me being over-critical and not used to a new medium. Until I saw your criticisms and I was like wait my first impressions were correct😭😭
I WAS THE SAME I didn't even hate it when I watched the first episode or anything I was just like ??? This is absolutely bizarre LMAO but then everyone was saying it was PERFECT and they got everything SO RIGHT and I was like 😭😭 am I crazy??? WHAT is going on HHHH it's why I'm like...clearly stubborn about this GJFJGJ cause those few weeks online were like a fever dream to me

just thinking about Netflix One Piece vs. Netflix Cowboy Bebop and how one has been basically universally lauded vs. the other being universally reviled and maybe one of the reasons is a matter of tone of the source material
because Bebop is a pastiche of genres, much like jazz. The anime has its riffs and it plays around with them but for the most part stays grounded in its portrayal of realistic sci-fi
One Piece is set in a bigger than life world where everything is pushed up to 11. It mashes up pirates and superheroes. It can't be grounded in a serious reality. It is cartoony and big and bright and crazy and there's people who have animal characteristics and its absolutely accepted and fine. Funnily enough it's the cartoonish ridiculousness that the live-action series captured right.
Live action Bebop, and I say this as a person who ENJOYED live-action Bebop, leaned in too much on this cartoonishness too, for example the portrayal of Edward. What didn't work in Bebop absolutely works for OPLA.
Dutch angle shots were used in both series but they felt out of place in Bebop because the original anime didn't really have them, while One Piece, based on a manga, would have those reaction panels of characters, those deep close ups of faces.
idk where I'm going with this. I just think it's interesting.

my favorite thing about opla luffy other than the obvious is that he really embraces who crazy luffy actually is but slightly more intense like in the anime hes so stupid and funny and cute but fuck with his homies and ur gonna get beat up but opla luffy seems like he would actually beat a mf within an inch of their life like arlong is FUCKED
I feel you on that! Inaki really brings that fantastic spastic Luffy energy. One of my favorite things about Luffy IS that silliness, but when you mess with his friends or try and hurt innocent people he absolutely losses it.
I’m so happy they kept true to that because at his core Luffy just wants to have fun and low key write all the wrongs in the world without actually knowing it. He’s just a good dude in the anime and in OPLA, but OPLA does seem to have made them all just a tad more serious than their anime counterparts (besides Usopp that is pretty spot on).
The minute OPLA Luffy learned what happened to Nami and Nojiko’s mom it was a WRAP for Arlong.

I actually love hearing about dubs in other languages as someone who speaks English as a second language myself. Are there any other differences in the dub you feel like pointing out?
In the german live action dub you get basically everyone who dubbed the anime reprising their roles which I absolutely love. Gudo Hoegel was the first version of Buggy I ever heard and he seems to have a blast just chewing the scenery. Doesn’t sound like Jeff Ward at all though which is understandable, since he’s doing the same voice he did for Buggy in the anime, he sounds more like his og Japanese voice actor if anything, but goddammit if he isn’t the first voice in my head I imagine for Buggy. Childhood nostalgia is a powerful thing.
… also yes let’s point out the obvious: the german version for some reason that I don’t quite know translated Luffy as “Ruffy”. I do not know why we did this, I don’t particularly mind the change in German myself, but some people take great issue with it Apperantly? On the flipside imagine growing up hearing people in your language call him “Ruffy” all the time, pronouncing it exactly like you think that would be pronounced based on the way it’s written, only to then watch a japanese dub or the English one and wondering “Who the fuck is “Loof-ee”?
Voice acting is one of my special interest, be careful about what you wish for
Tumblr media
First of all I go and drop a ear on german Buggy and I looooooooved it! It fits the english / japanese dub pretty well in my opinion. Also LMAO RUFFY sorry but now I imagine a wish version of Luffy in a stereotypical german costume 😫
About dub differences, now
So if I absolutely loved the OPLA french version - and, if, in my opinion, France often makes *chief kiss* work in matter of voice acting, I really, really, REALLY don't like french version of the anime.
France has... how to say this... A rather shit poor history when it comes to dubbing animes. Back in time, french TV channels bought entire catalogues of anime without really looking at them, and branded them all as "cartoons for kids". Now imagine the face of the producers when they discovered Hokuto no Ken and actually had to make it kid friendly ! One of the ploy they found out was the dub. They make purposely ridiculous dubs for violent animes in order to hide a bit of their initial violences. I think that even if you don't speak french you can appreciate it :
youtube
... aaaaand even if it was taken way more seriously, I think that french one piece dubs suffered a bit from this decision too. I just discovered the anime so I don't have a nostalgia filter on it and I can say it's probably one of the only medias I don't watch in french because it ruins *everything*.
For example, Buggy - Or should I say BAGGY because we translated it - and luffy in the french anime :
youtube
I don't know if when you're not french it hurts your ears as well, but it's really poorly played and written... and the character suffers a lot from it in my opinion, BAGGY doesn't have this little crazy sparkle he has in japanese and english, and Luffy... Luffy don't play at all lmao, just reading the text 😫
That's it come back for more infodumps !!!!

Hi Melonteee! (not me misspelling it as MelontRee for the longest time before I saw another ask question making the same mistake *insert Bepo voice here* Sumimasen!)
Hope you are doing well and are not overwhelmed by all these asks!
I normally stay away from YT One Piece because from what I could first experience it's full of machismo dudebros or crazy theorists gallore that make me wonder if we even watch the same series, but BLESSED BE the day I clicked on one of your clips!!! I have since devoured them all and I have even developed a habit of rewatching some of them when I want to wind down with my favourite babies! I know it's probably not easy, but I just wanted you to know they are much loved and appreciated!
I also really appreciate you standing your ground when it comes to the OPLA, reading you comments on it made me feel less crazy, I'm behind you 100%. And you are absolutely right, you would be feeling like ripping your hair out if you do make through to end of the season. Sadly the #one piece tag is also brimming with things about it, so I migrated to my next favourite tags #zosan and #mishanks and I found some blogs that healed my soul and watered my crops so I´m sharing them here with you, maybe you would also like to take a break (here's hoping the links work):
DREAMXXDREAM Zosan
JOU IS JOY Buggy and Cross guild scribbles
PHiLandresi ART One Piece / Zosan
I hope they bring you comfort!
Looking forward to whatever you make next! :)
You would not beliieeeve that the reason I started making video essays on One Piece is because I couldn't find the content I wanted of it lmao. I love love love video essays so much and the One Piece story and characters had SO MUCH to look at I was desperate to just...TALK ABOUT IT!!
And thank you so much for these blog recommendations! I can't say I'm actively avoiding any opla content at all lmao but I do still appreciate it and will check them out
Thank you so much for the kind words though they really do motivate me ❤
