Plot Bunny: Criminal Minds, Oliver Stark FC?
Oh, bless you for this one, thanks so much!! Also gonna tag the Criminal Minds gang, @luucypevensie, @bibaybe, @xoteajays, @thatmagickjuju, and @endless-oc-creations!! <3 <3
NAME: Adam Cromwell.
LOVE INTEREST: Spencer Reid.
SUMMARY: There were very few people who knew Adam’s real name. Though he had gone by Adam Cromwell for almost fifteen years, he had been born David Teller… the youngest son of Christian Teller, the infamous Saint of Death, who had killed thirteen women in small churches across the Midwest before he’d been caught and sent to jail for life. After his arrest, Adam, his mother, and his three brothers had all changed their names and moved across the country, trying to outrun the shame and horror of what Christian had done, and so ever since the age of ten, Adam had been wondering why his father had done what he’d done, and why nobody, not even his own family, had noticed in time to stop him. And it was these thoughts, this drive to understand what had driven his father in turn to kill all those women, that had led Adam to enter the FBI Academy and eventually the Behavioural Analysis Unit, looking into the minds of humanity’s worst and using what he found to put them behind bars. But although Adam does find his job fulfilling, he has to admit that the highlight of working for the BAU is one Dr. Spencer Reid… if only he can find a way to tell the awkward, lanky genius how he feels, and to tell the team that has become his family about the secrets he’s been hiding.
OTHER INFO:
Spencer in a bi4bi ship, yes? Yes.
There is definitely an episode where the team is investigating a serial killer that they think might be a copycat of Adam’s father and Adam is forced to tell the team about his past and actually go and talk to Christian. They’re all very shocked about the information (except for Hotch, of course, because it’s in Adam’s files), but none of them judge him a bit for it.
He and Spencer get together sometime around season three, after pining for almost the entirety of their time together, and although their relationship of course has its ups and downs, they really do love each other and it’s so obvious!
Hotch becomes kind of a father figure to him over the course of the story, because his mother never remarried after Christian’s arrest and he obviously has some daddy issues.
Adam and Emily also become besties when she joins the BAU! They’re peak MLM/WLW solidarity and have fun causing chaos together.
send me a fandom and a faceclaim/love interest and i’ll make an oc!!

I Just Watched: Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002)
Aww, I WISH I saw this film when I was young! 😭😭😭 I was really into horses and ponies back then, back when I would watch pretty much anything with them in it. From cartoons and animated films such as The Last Unicorn (1982) and My Little Pony (the 00's era, not Friendship Is Magic. I was too old when that came out!) to live action TV shows such as The Saddle Club (2001–2009). This film would've been an amazing addition to my horse and pony addiction because HOLY MOTHER, this was EPIC!!! I mean it!
This film was absolutely breathtaking! It had a gorgeous blend of 2D and 3D animation that surprisingly still holds up to this day. The watercolour backdrops were stunning and reminded me so much of classic Disney films back when they did traditional cell animation on painted backgrounds. It’s very nostalgic to me! I enjoyed the quiet moments where no one uttered a single line of dialogue and it allowed the main horse characters to emote so clearly to the viewer. None of the horses talk. Like, at all. They just neigh and nicker like any horse would. And that’s great! It’s so rare to see animated films do something like this whereas most of them nowadays just have these animal characters talk and voice their thoughts out loud to the viewer. The horse’s verbal and physical behaviour in this was so realistic and they never bordered on cartoony or were over-the-top in any way, in my opinion.
I think the film would have been even better if it didn’t have any narration in it, and I’m sure most people will agree with me here. It was unnecessary and added nothing to the story because we as the audience already know what’s happening and what the horses are doing and how they are feeling. We don’t need it to be spelled out to us! I haven’t seen or heard Matt Damon do any voice work before watching this film, so I don’t know how good of a voice actor he is. But in this, he sounded so…bored throughout, and seemed like he wasn’t really giving it his all, like he wanted everything to be over with as soon as possible. I suppose DreamWorks got greedy and wanted a celebrity name on their film as a way of drawing people in and getting their butts on seats. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case, honestly. 🙄
I actually enjoyed the soundtrack in this. Hans Zimmer and Bryan Adams are a match made in heaven! Most people don’t like the songs and think they disrupt the flow of the story, but I personally have no problems with it, mainly because I’m a big Bryan Adams fan and the songs suit the scenes they appeared in very well. He didn’t have to go this hard on an animated film, but he did, and I love it! I still find myself listening to the soundtrack very often to this day.
Overall, a fantastic film! Would definitely watch it again!
9/10

Sugar - season 1 (2024) review

“Sugar (do do do do do do), oh honey honey (do do do do do do)…..” mind you this song isn’t played in the show but I’m glad I was reminded of this banger.
Plot: Private detective John Sugar investigates the disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he unearths Siegel family secrets, old and new.
Nicolas Cage recently got confirmed to be cast in Prime’s live-action Spider-Man spin-off series Noir where he’ll be playing the web-swinging PI, and as much as I’m excited to see Cage brood in black-and-white, there’s currently a perfectly enjoyable noir detective series on Apple TV+ that I haven’t heard anyone talk about. Especially due to its flabbergasting mid-season plot twist that is so laughably out-of-left-field that I’m not sure it’s a good or bad thing. But let’s discuss…
Taking inspiration from the likes of LA Confidential and Chinatown, this neo noir show plays as a greatest hits album of all the tropes of the genre. The first two episodes especially are super enjoyable, through Farrell’s narration, to the slow piano music to the use of black-and-white and crisp cinematography, the entire thing just felt like a vibe. A super cool vibe. Naturally Colin Farrell is a perfect casting choice to play the charming private investigator. He’s got that likeable face you feel you can trust, but enough going on in his expression to give him that element of mystery. Also Farrell looks great in a suit. One has to respect a man that can wear a suit well. Ask Barney Stinson. So the first two episodes are truly awesome. The script wasn’t anything groundbreaking, with Farrell’s inner monologues featuring lines you’d easily find in other neo-noir movies/shows, but just as a collective package this thing felt ace in its first two episodes. There’s also this glossy pastiche of old-school movies that are referenced throughout, reflecting John Sugar’s passion for film and the Hollywood setting. However after that the show slows down, with the central mystery of the missing girl stretched out with pointless baggage around it to fulfill the series episode count. Honestly, this would have worked better as a film rather than a series.
Now in regards to the aforementioned plot twist. I haven’t been so snortingly contemptuous of a reveal since that 2019 fishing thriller Serenity starring Matthew McConaughey that pulls of a ‘bait and switch’ times two with its ending that is so ludicrously random and out of nowhere that I recall truly gasping at the cinema. It’s a terrible twist, but also for a movie that otherwise was utterly boring and bad, that narrative shock at least gave me somewhat of a thrill. So with Sugar at the end of episode 6 a certain reveal happens, that in a way completely changes the entire series. Though one could argue there were a couple of clues in earlier episodes that could have somewhat suggested this twist, in reality I do believe this reveal was a bit of a cheat. It’s an unearned way to grab attention and get a “WHAAAA???” reaction out of the audience, and I thought it came off as a cheap shot. Granted though it gave the meandering show a little boost of energy to the end of the season, but felt so out of place. If the reveal happened earlier, then the show would have had more time to play up to its weird premise.
Sugar is very much a series that is carried by its lead performance (and an adorable doggo), and though the beginning of the season was a strong start, it lost its narrative direction shortly after until that baffling twist that again, I can’t decide if it’s good or bad, but I’m leaning more towards the latter. A good twist needs to have the correct appropriate set-up. The twist in Sugar was more like the showrunners going “psyche - gotcha!”
Overall score: 5/10

Sugar (Apple TV+) Season One. Review/The Big Twist In The Room.
Whatever else can be said about Apple streaming originals ( as has been covered on this blog plenty in the past) they can never be accused of doing anything as a half measure. When looked at from a certain angle there’s no better exemplification of that than this Colin Farrell starring PI series. Farrell plays the titular John Sugar. An investigator who seemingly imports his worldview from…

Species II (1998)
In today's review, I find that boldly going to mars might be a bad move. As I attempt a #positive review of the 1998 space-fairing sequel, Species II #NatashaHenstridge #MichaelMadsen #MargHelgenberger #JamesCromwell #MykeltiWilliamson #RichardBelzer
What lies beyond this blue little marble? Parasites, attractive anthropomorphic beings? An army of polydontal predators, all of the above? We don’t know. Yet with curiosity as our co-pilot, we push on forward, into potential peril, not knowing what is out there, what its intentions may be, and how it will demonstrate those intentions. In 1998, a sequel turned to the stars for a surprisingly…

Sugar (prod. Sam Catlin).
A hard-boiled Colin Farrell stars as a rather oddball cinephile of a private detective with a heart of gold in what is eventually revealed to be a bizarre genre mashup of a television series blending everything from pulpy crime tales to a sci-fi drama set in Hollywood. It's almost impossible to discuss the show and its quality without the episode six twist of who Farrell's John Sugar really is in one of the more baffling revelations not shared until far too late in the series' run while being teased at every turn.

The morning of the world
England, 1649: the king has been executed, the monarchy has ended at last, but it's been replaced with a dictatorship. Yet suddenly we're back in the morning of the world.
It's a mindset. In the evening of the world, life will always go on as it's gone on before. If it changes, it can only get worse. In the morning of the world, everything seems possible.
Into this churn of chaos, worry, and excitement steps a 40-year-old man named Gerard Winstanley. He has a story and a plan.
You always need both, you see. If you don't have a plan, nobody can hope. And if you don't have a story, nobody will believe the plan: they've been given too many lies before to believe the truth.
Winstanley's plan was, literally, radical. He was going to build a community which planted crops on common land. They would live together, work together, eat together.
Today, we might call it anarchism or communism. But then, people called them the Diggers.
You see, common land was a contentious topic. For centuries, ordinary people had had the right to grow food to eat.
But in the last fifty years, the lords of manors had obtained legal permission to take these rights away: to "enclose" common land.
(Modern privatisation is similar.)
So the ordinary people lost their right to plant crops on the land they and their forebears had used for centuries. You might have heard the rhyme:
The law condemns the man or woman
Who steals the goose from off the common
But lets the larger villain loose
Who steals the common off the goose
This was the first part of Winstanley's story.
The second part looked back a few centuries, to when the Norman aristocrats took over England by force— as they soon did to Wales and Ireland, too.
Winstanley said that Cromwell had had a chance to undo the damage the Normans had done to England. But instead, he had set up his own dictatorship. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
But the third part went back to the beginning: the literal morning of the world.
You know the story of Adam and Eve, and how taking the apple was the original sin. But what *was* the sin? Aquinas thought it was pride. Many people have suggested it was lust.
But Winstanley said the tree was for everyone and they wanted it for themselves; so their sin was covetousness— greed, if you like.
He punned that Adam was "a dam": he wanted to take things and hold them himself.
And the lords and the landlords were still living in Adam's sin.
That was the story: what was the plan? Occupy the land they'd lost once more, and build the new world piece by piece.
Communities of the Diggers sprang up around the country, most famously in St George's Hill in Surrey. They lived together, ate together, worked together.
They were peaceful, but the landlords saw their very existence as a threat. So they had them arrested, and destroyed their fields and their houses.
I mention all this because a Marxist-Leninist asked me "What is the anarchists' plan to change the world?"
When I said, "hope", he didn't take it for a serious answer. But it was.
What do you need, to live in the morning of the world? What story, and what plan?
