UNDISCLOSED DESIRES (Fernando Alonso x Reader)
TITLE: Undisclosed Desires – aka who is the biggest fan of whom? (Fernando Alonso x Reader)
I got inspired after Baku. P6 BABY, LET’S GOOOOOOOOOO!
FYI: English is not my main language nor is Spanish. I’m sorry for any mistakes.
Word count: 4K
Warnings: self-doubt, self-image issues, kind of shy reader, reassuring and slightly dominant Nando (who worships the shit out of you), happiness, positive social media presence, Spanish, dirty talking and fingering, smuttish – I hope you enjoy it. 😉
Recommended song: Undisclosed Desires by Muse
Explanation: Y/N – your name, Y/H/C – your hair color
Also, this GIF is chef's kiss, his gaze is so intense. GOSH!!! 🔥 I hope you'll like it. Let me know what you think! ❤️🔥
//
It was race day in Baku.
You were sitting in the paddock waiting for Fernando Alonso to show up. Your boyfriend. It was hard to comprehend that he was your man, your partner. It was an unbelievable title – but it was true, he really was yours.
However, the last period has been challenging for both of you. On the one hand, Alonso has spent several periods away from you, as Aston Martin has struggled to get a good position in recent months. Of course, Fernando took his job very seriously, so he helped the engineers where he could. They did a lot of test laps, planning, thinking.
As for you: you were an average person. You were not a reporter or a supermodel. You were completely different from Alonso's previous partners. You were ordinary – in the best possible way. But it was a very difficult situation for you. You often questioned yourself: were you good enough? Were you good enough not only for yourself but for him? Where did you belong in this world? Especially seeing the other WAGs, and how pretty and thin they were… And you could go on. So, all that time you spent apart didn't help your already fragile mental state.
It was tough for you not to project your self-doubt onto him. And you hated yourself for it. Because there was nothing you wanted more than to be there to support him in every race. To be there for him, always. But a lot of times your state of mind, the media presence, and all the hustle and bustle didn't help you at all. That's why you stayed mostly in the background, as you didn't want Fernando to worry any more than he had been worrying lately.
Fortunately, Aston Martin recently managed to sign Adrian Newey to the team, and you could almost see the "life" returning to Fernando's eyes. The love of your life was shining as he entered the paddock: his stance was firm and confident, that mischievous smile at the corner of his mouth was back, and his gaze was sparkling with fire which you hadn't seen for a long time now.
You couldn't help thinking how good he looked. How he deserves to be world champion again. Your world champion. The thought made your chest tighten. You loved him so much it almost hurt. You wanted him to be happy and succeed so much – it was sometimes physically impossible to bear.
You have never felt this way about anyone, and you didn't want to lose him. You had been together for almost a year now, but you noticed your feelings for him growing every day. So, you thought this weekend was the perfect time to surprise him and actually show that. To be there for him not just mentally, but physically.
You pulled yourself together: you wore a custom Kimoa x Aston Martin shirt that fit your body perfectly. While you didn't have a supermodel figure, you were definitely gorgeous. You had a lot of heads turning in the paddock.
Your Y/H/C hair glistened in the sunshine, your fingernails painted the typical "Aston Martin green". You counterbalanced the shirt with a black skort that showed off your body perfectly but wasn't too much. To top off everything, you were wearing a sneaker to keep it casual. But the way you wore Fernando's name on your body – front and back, sparkled in his colors, and carried his brand proudly, you were anything but "casual".
As soon as Fernando entered the garage, he noticed you. But he had to look twice just to make sure you were really there because he was not used to seeing you around. Although he made no secret of you, he was very aware of how much you tried to avoid the public. He could understand that you were suffering with your own demons, and he knew exactly how harsh the media could be on F1 drivers and their loved ones.
But at that moment, he didn't care about anything or anyone. Just you. And all he felt was pride. You were a perfect fit. His perfect fit. And the fact that you were wearing Aston Martin colors, and his brand made his heart beat faster. Suddenly he didn't know what he was feeling.
The way he looked at you took your breath away for a moment. You felt as if all the air had been sucked out of the room (even though it was half in the open air). The fire that flared up in Fernando's eyes was so intense, that you feared he would burn everyone alive. But mostly you.
Your feet rooted to the ground; you gulped as he strode confidently towards you.
"Mi vida," Fernando began, and leaving you no time to think, he pulled you close to him, pressing a passionate kiss to your lips.
In that moment you forgot that other people were standing around you. There were probably a few photos taken of you, but you didn't care. At that moment, it was just the two of you. You wrapped your arms around his neck and pulled him closer to you to deepen the kiss.
Not only his eyes were fiery, but so was the passion he kissed with. There was almost no space left between the two of you as he pulled you shut to him, his hand holding your waist tightly.
Your tongues brushed against each other to have a taste. You almost moaned out loud at the sensation, and you knew you had to stop now, or you wouldn't be able to contain yourself. This man brought out emotions that you never had before. With him... Well, you were always horny, so to speak.
Your cheeks heated up at the thought of him taking you there and then, so you broke the kiss. You tilted your forehead to his.
"Nando," you said breathlessly. "People are watching."
"I don’t care, mi amor," he replied, his Spanish accent getting heavier, which tends to come out when he's very passionate or angry. You hoped it was the former. "Estoy tan contenta de verte," he murmured into your lips in Spanish. It meant he was very happy to see you. You have spent the last year trying to learn as much of the language as possible, which he of course appreciated. You were of a different nationality as well and English was your common language.
You learned a lot from him in bed. He was quite vocal – to say the least. Calling you pet names and talking through it… Enough, you thought to yourself, snapping out of your trans.
Fernando laughed at your expression and how easy it was to make you riled up just with a simple sentence. It was as if he could see inside your head. It was easy for him to read you. And he enjoyed teasing the hell out of you.
He pulled you closer to him for a hug and pressed a short kiss to your forehead.
"I'm really glad that you're here," he said once again, this time in English, squeezing you gently to mark his words. "And you look beautiful too," You hugged him around the waist, burying your face in his chest and taking in his intoxicating scent. The smell that always kept you going: something leathery and woody. It was very masculine, but somehow still comforting and reassuring. Thanks to Boss. They were doing God's work with this man.
"Here to support the best," you muttered into his shirt. You pulled away from him for a moment to look him in the eye. "I'm your biggest fan, I hope you know that." He loved the way you were looking up at him: the way you were glowing with love and desire. How your lips were swelled up after the kiss, how you stood there in the garage, proud to belong to him.
Alonso was like you. He hasn't felt that way about anyone for a very long time. And although he did everything he could for you, somehow it was very difficult for him to talk about his feelings. And not because he was ashamed of them or because he wasn't sure of himself – he was too sure of what he felt. And it frightened him. He was afraid to open up and might lose you. He was old enough to know what he wanted, and he didn't want to start over again with anyone else. All he wanted was you. In the end, somehow, he was still afraid. You had been together for about a year, but he was afraid to say those particular three words, even though he kept calling you "my love" and its synonyms in Spanish.
And at the moment as he looked at you… He was sure. He was sure he wanted you for the rest of his life and that you weren't his biggest fan, but more like vice versa. And he wanted to prove it to you.
He pulled you into his embrace once more.
"I know, mi amor," he mumbled into your hair and pressed another kiss to the top of your head. "I'll put myself out there, just for you," he added with a gentle chuckle. You squeezed him and then let him go, knowing how much he had to do before the race. You took a few steps back just to take him in, now there was even more determination in his eyes than before. Fernando was almost vibrating with excitement, knowing you were there to cheer and support him. And there was something in his eyes as well that made the butterflies in your stomach revive.
"I…" you wanted to say something, but how his eyes softened with tenderness made you speechless. He slowly reached for your hands, his fingertips gently caressing the soft skin of your palm.
"Can I take some photos of you guys?" suddenly one of the team members of Aston Martin popped between the two of you. He was clearly making some content for the team's social media channel and even though you were nervous, you somehow felt put together and wanted to support Fernando all the way. "You look so good together," he added with a soft smile. You tried to find lies in his eyes, but he seemed sincere. Maybe it's time to really believe that you're GOOD and that you looked great together. Fernando Alonso wasn't with you for nothing.
Fernando looked at you and waited for your approval. You nodded slightly and Alonso immediately pulled you to him by the waist.
"The best girl on the grid," Alonso said loudly and proudly, pushing a soft kiss to your temple. You couldn't help but smile at his affection and you pulled him closer to you as well, while the social media guy snapped a few pics.
After that, he showed you all the pictures. As Fernando looked at you in the photos, all his emotions were clear: his eyes radiated with love and respect. And you were definitely glowing next to him. The guy went on to show you some of the photos, eventually stopped when he had taken the two of you kissing. You indeed looked very good together.
"Sorry, I couldn't help myself," he mumbled to himself. Fernando tensed for a moment next to you, waiting for any protest. But you didn't. You really did look good together and wanted nothing more than to show the two of you to the world.
"It’s okay," you started. "The pictures are really great," you reassured the guy and Fernando next to you loosened up. He pressed another kiss to your temple then took a few steps back.
"I'm sorry, mi amor, but I have to go now," he said. "Enjoy the race," Fernando added with a wink. That damn wink. And that damn smirk. Gosh, that will be the end of you. Pendejo.
You turned back towards the social media guy, and at that moment you realized that because of his interference, you didn't say out loud what you wanted to a few moments ago. You wanted to declare your love to Fernando for the very first time, out loud, but now you missed your chance…
"Can I take a few more of you, especially the shirt and nails?" he asked shyly, snapping you out of your thoughts. "You seem like a truly great soul who supports and respects Alonso, and I want to show that to the world," you were almost touched by his words. You were definitely genuine with Fernando and didn't want to use him for anything. You were just there because you were his greatest fan. And that was the best thing for you.
You nodded softly and you guys managed to make a full-on photoshoot in the end. You were surprised at how liberated you felt at the end, and you even chuckled and did some "model-poses."
"You're a natural," he chuckled but you soon stopped as the race began.
//
The race was very exciting. Full of overtaking and adrenaline. At the end of the race, Alonso managed to score P6, which is a very big word from Aston Martin these days. You couldn't help but be excited all the way through, expressing emotion and knowing you were going to be all over social media, but you didn't care. Because Fernando Alonso won. In your eyes that P6 was P1.
After the race, you ran up to him and hugged him. He still had his mask on, but you pressed a kiss to the plexiglass. Of course, the cameras were clicking around you, but you didn't care. Because you were incredibly happy, and you were glad for Alonso. And at that moment, that was all that mattered. If it didn't bother him that you were in every picture (and it probably didn't, because he'd asked you to come with him to the paddock countless times), why would it have bothered you?
In that moment you realized that even though you never said those three words, it was clear how you felt about each other. Alonso lifted you up as he celebrated.
"Yes, baby," he said then laughed. You loved it when he was so excited. And you couldn't wait to see what the new season would bring him under Newey's aegis.
//
A few hours after the race, you were sitting in your hotel room looking at your phone.
Social media, especially Aston Martin's official Instagram page, was full of you and Fernando. You couldn't stop smiling as you saw the hashtag #couplegoals and the many, many supportive comments from fans. What were you afraid of in the first place?
Sure, there will always be some people who don't like certain things, but the majority of commenters were supportive. At least, most of them. You locked your phone and looked out the window. You were thinking about everything that happened that day and you couldn't help but admire the wonderful view of the old town of Baku. You tried to take in every little detail, but your mind kept wandering back to how truly happy you looked at those pictures. And how you guys looked good together.
You let a soft sight as you snapped back to reality. You were waiting for Alonso and he was always on time. You were more the late type, but now you're well ahead of schedule. You wanted everything to be perfect. Not just for the night but for you as well. After the race, you took a thorough bath, did the typical "girly routine", used lotion, did your hair, your make-up... You wore his favorite perfume that made you both sweet and seductive – just to make sure he loses his mind. Then you put on an Aston Martin green evening dress that perfectly accentuated your figure and hid what you were less than happy with. That's how you were waiting for him as the two of you arranged to have dinner tonight to celebrate his placing. Just the two of you. You took your eyes off the city and slowly stood up and went to the full-length mirror in the corner of your bedroom to examine yourself.
You've smoothed out the non-existent wrinkles on your dress, but you've looked quite nice – even you were satisfied, which is a big thing. You nodded to yourself, just when you heard a knock on your door.
Slowly you walked over and opened it. There stood Alonso, in all his glory. He was wearing a black shirt and a black suit. For some reason, the color combination looked very good on his skin. His stubble was short and thick, the hair was all set. You were instantly struck by the typical "Alonso scent", the leathery, woody, Boss-y fragrance. Gosh, he looked delightful. Your mouth almost watered at the sight.
But as he looked at you, he was the one taken aback. You looked like an angel in that green dress. And he was ready to be your demon in that black attire of his, to lead you into the dark mysteries of the night as his eyes locked with yours. You were like the perfect match for him: black and white, Ying and Yang to each other.
"Y/N," he basically growled, as he stepped closer to you, his accent heavy. He tried crossing the distance between the two of you. The emotions of the whole day were stirring inside him. As he stepped closer, you stepped back. He looked at you as if he were the hunter and you were his prey.
His eyes burned with a fire you'd probably never seen from him before. You were almost afraid that as soon as he got close to you, it would burn. And you weren't sure you didn't want to burn all the way.
As you stepped back, he stepped forward one more step, closing the door behind him.
The back-and-forth game continued until you got to the bed. As soon as your knee hit the thing, a truly devilish smile spread across Fernando's face. His eyes almost darkened, with only one thing in his mind: you. Oh, he wanted to explore every inch of you like he'd never done before.
Suddenly you didn’t know why, maybe because of the intensity of his gaze, you felt very shy. You felt almost naked even though you were fully dressed up. You were almost certain that he saw right through you and he could see your flaws and mistakes. At least, that's how you were with yourself. Because when it always came to "that", it was very hard to switch off and let go.
"Mi amor," he started. "Look at me!" he ordered, and you obeyed. Not that you could argue with that: he stepped closer to you to lift your chin, so you had to look him in the eye. He could read you like an open book. He knew your past, your traumas, your hurts. "I know you've suffered, but I don't want you to hide."
That sentence meant more to you than you knew. The knowledge that he saw you, like really saw you, that you didn't have to hide yourself from him, and that he accepted you as you are, said more than anything. You tried not to get emotional, but you couldn't help it as a single tear rolled out of your eye. Fernando slowly wiped it away with his finger.
His gaze became a touch gentler, his hand slid down your face, down your arm, all the way to your fingers. There he intertwined his with yours and slowly guided you to the mirror.
"What are you doing?" you asked quietly.
"Trust me," he said confidently, as you stood in front of the mirror. The mirror was tilted a little so you could see both of your figures quite well. "You are the one," he whispered softly to your ear from behind.
You shivered a little, then let go and leaned against his chest. You closed your eyes for a moment, enjoying the way Fernando stroked your arm again, from the bottom all the way up to your neck.
"What do you mean?" you asked softly, leaning your head back to his shoulder.
"As I said, mi amor," the words rolled out of his tongue. "You're the one for me." You opened your eyes and again met that burning look in the mirror as he held your gaze. "I love you, Y/N, just the way you are," he admitted. "Completely and utterly."
The air caught in your throat at the confession. You looked at him with eyes full of emotion, then turned in his arms so that you were face to face with him.
You tried to analyze every little movement of his. Was it true? All the alarm bells went off in your head, but you wanted to believe it. And he seemed sincere. You deserve to be happy too, so it's time to give yourself to it.
"I love you so much, it almost hurts," you confessed as well. Fernando grabbed the fabric of your dress, it was really hard for him to contain himself. His lips hovered just a few inches above yours.
His chest tightened at the sound of your words, and he could barely restrain himself from taking you at that moment. But he wanted to make sure you felt worshipped and loved – just how you deserved it.
He brushed his lips against yours, looking at your reaction. Your breath hitched in your throat, and he loved the sight of it. He wanted you to see it as well. He wanted you to see how he makes you react. And how he makes you feel good.
He firmly but gently started to turn your hips between his hands. He encouraged you to turn back, so his chest could face your back and you could see yourself in the mirror once again.
"I'm only going to say this once, mi amor," he began, running his hand down your arm again. His voice was firm and dominant. You just loved it when he was like that with you. You knew deep down he was devoted and wanted only good things for you. "Keep your eyes on me," he said in the mirror. "I know it's hard," he added. "But can you do it for me, princess?"
You swallowed hard and nodded.
"Así amor," he murmured into your neck.
He placed a slow kiss on the back of your neck, then moved his hand lower, now on your hip. There he firmly grabbed the dress and almost ripped it off you so that now you were standing in front of the mirror in just your underwear. As he saw the black lace piece, another growl erupted from his throat.
"Mierda," he cussed at the sight of you. You would have preferred to hide. You didn't want to tear yourself away from his gaze, but you didn't want to look at yourself either.
Just like he could read your mind he said: "You're beautiful," sliding his hand from your waist to your stomach, so that he could slowly slip his hand inside your panties. "What did I say, mi amor?" he asked in a dominant voice, suddenly stopping in his movements.
You knew exactly what he meant: you swallowed hard. Once again.
"To look at you," you answered, searching for his eyes again. As your gazes interlaced, he began to move his hands once again.
"Así es," he whispered softly into your neck, then left a hot trail of kisses behind. At the same time, he started to move his fingers skillfully, reaching for the perfect spot: where he could feel your aching desire for him. The need started to pool between your legs larger and larger.
You wanted to close your eyes and lean back to him, to lose fully to the sensation but you knew him just well enough that if you would do that he would stop. He kept eye contact while his fingers were deep inside you. The demon in black, your demon who wanted nothing but to make his angel come undone at his touch and mercy.
"Nando," you whispered, as you looked at the two of you in the mirror.
"Sí, mi amor?" he asked, looking into your eyes while he kept his steady rhythm, collecting your wetness on his fingers, now pressing the end of his palm to your core. You bite down at your lower lips at the sensation, letting out a soft moan. "Use your words, princess," he smirked, knowing how hard it was to concentrate right now. He loved seeing you like this, and you loved the effect you had on him, as you could feel his hardness pressing against your behind. His intense gaze, his body, his touch, and his words almost sent you over the edge. Almost.
Then he suddenly stopped. You let out a frustrated breath and you get a chuckle in return.
"I…" you gasped and then shut up.
"Sí, mi amor?" he asked once again, tilting his head to the side as he was looking at you in the mirror. You desperately craved some friction, you even tried to rub together your thighs, but nothing helped.
"I…" you started once again, and he looked at you with encouraging eyes. "I want to…" your cheeks heated up at your words and you didn't even know why. "I want to cum." you finally managed to blurt out.
He let out a chuckle, grabbing your hips with one of his hands and he slid back his other under your panties.
"Was it so hard, princessa?" he asked, and he started using his fingers again. This time more passionately and faster. With one hand you grabbed Fernando's forearm while still trying to keep your eyes on him. "That’s it," he told you as he tried to help you finally push over the line. He knew how much you loved him when he talked you through it. "I want you to see how beautiful you are when you come undone for me," he whispered into your ear and that's what it took. You shook in his arms as you finally reached the highest highs, fireworks playing before your eyes and at this point, you couldn't help but close your eyes. Your feelings for him, his voice, his touch – it was just too much. You suddenly stumbled, but he was there to catch you. And he always will be.
"That's it, mi amor," he whispered, holding you close to him, while he pressed soft kisses to your neck as he guided you through your high.
For a few moments, you stayed in silence. Then he spoke: "I'm your biggest fan, I hope you know that," he repeated your words from earlier. Your chest tightened at his confession, and you turned in his embrace, now facing him. A soft and loving smile played on your lips as you pulled yourself closer to him.
“But you’re the one who won, we should celebrate you,” you said mischievously. You started to push him back towards the bed where he sat down, so you could straddle him. Fernando groaned as he felt you move against him. His whole body was becoming hard.
“Oh, we will celebrate, mi vida,” he chuckled darkly. “All. Night. Long.” he said and kissed you with so much passion that it consumed the two of you. Each one was like a promise, a seal, a mark for your happiness and a long, prosperous future together.

do you have any book recommendations? nonfiction or fiction. i'd love to hear what you've enjoyed reading!
!!
Books!!! I love them!!!
Uhh
I'm always a big fan of science fiction! (loong so. under the cut)
I mean. There's always Star Wars, if you're into it. Best of those would be the three Thrawn trilogies (yes three trilogies) by Timothy Zahn. The old one (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, The Last Command) is literally sequels to the original movies, and they were canon (and awesome) before Disney did their shit. They are very good.
Adrian Tchaikovsky is a fantastic author! His Shards of Earth trilogy and Children of Time trilogy are some of the best scifi I've read! Completely different vibes though, but both are really good!
Uhh... If you want existential dread forever, read The Three-Body Problem trilogy. If you've ever heard of the Dark Forest solution to the Fermi paradox, these books are where it came from. (Or popularised/named it? idk.) They're also pretty good.
Everything by Becky Chambers. Wayfarers tetralogy, Monk and Robot duology, To Be Taught If Fortunate, all really good vibes. LGBTR (Little Gay Books To Read)
the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown.
The Locked Tomb trilogy by Tamsyn Muir! Wow! These are really good. Lesbian necromancers in space, and it makes sense. The narrators don't tell you anything either, because in book 1 the narrator doesn't know jack shit, in book 2 the 'narrator' gave herself a lobotomy, and the narrator in book 3 is six months old.
the MaddAddam trilogy by Margaret Atwood. Post-apocalyptic, but the pre-apocalypse was also a capitalism hellscape, so you don't feel too bad.
the Lilith's Brood trilogy by Octavia Butler is some of the BEST aliens scifi I've read holy shit. Seriously, read this.
The Book of Koli trilogy by M. R. Carey! 300 years after an environmental/war apocalypse. Written language has been forgotten, the bioengineered trees have further evolved to walk around and hunt humans (among other things), and the leaders of the remaining groups of humans have whatever top-of-the-line, self-repairing, and self-refilling infantry weapons from the war to use on each other.
A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine (two books out, dunno if there'll be a third). Ever wondered about a poetry-based interstellar empire? And what if it were gay?
The Andy Weir books. The Martian, Artemis, Project Hail Mary, those are good.
If you're more into YA scifi, then the Lunar Chronicles tetralogy and Renegades trilogy by Marissa Meyer are both fantastic, and the Aurora Rising and Illuminae Files trilogies by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff (collabs) are amazing!
Fantasy is also good! But I don't find myself reading very much of it.
First off: Discworld. I read 25 of 41 over the summer, and they are GOOD. https://www.discworldemporium.com/reading-order/
All of the Greishaverse stuff by Leigh Bardugo is pretty good, but the Six of Crows duology is really amazing.
The Cruel Prince trilogy by Holly Black! If you like fae stuff, but also urban fantasy and romance. Good books!
A Darker Shade of Magic trilogy by V. E. Schwab, those are good! There's also a sequel series coming out atm.
OMG how can I forget the N. K. Jemisin books?? The Broken Earth trilogy is FANTASTIC. What if the Earth hated everyone and there were geology witches that are actually pretty awesome but everyone hates them? The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms trilogy is also really good. What if the gods were actually omnipotent, but sort of hated each other? And the Great Cities duology! What if New York City was a person (six people)?
As for less scifi-fantasy, I've read and really enjoyed:
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, a retelling of David Copperfield, this time with the main character living/growing up in rural Appalachia during the opioid epidemic. Really, really good.
All of the Alice Oseman books of course.
One Two Three by Laurie Frankel
Webcomics! These were really fun and they're still ongoing! My favs are:
Questionable Content (yes, you can start at 2104). Just a bunch of young adults in Massachusetts doing random shit with varying degrees of gayness, eventually the singularity happens and there are robots (they're gay too)
Dumbing of Age Really, really good college story. Fundie girl goes to college and learns about how the world actually works, varying amounts of gayness, horrible very bad parents, and three dramatic character deaths by the end of the first semester.
Gunnerkrigg Court weird scifi fantasy stuff going on all the time, big mysteries, omnipotent trickster god. The art style improves a LOT.
Web serials (if you want to be consumed by a piece of literature that's easily over a dozen normal books in length)
Worm. 1.6 million words. This consumed me from July to September. Good god. Some of the very best superheroes and superpowers, like, ever, beautiful fight scenes, and conflict escalation that does. not. stop. The poor characters never get a break between crises and catastrophes. But by Scion it is one of the best things I've ever read. Don't look up anything about it, the spoilers are insane. And there's a sequel that's even longer.
Uh.. I've started Katalepsis

4 SFF Books For (Humanities) Nerds
Hey guys! I know I promised this like, last year, but life got in the way :( But now I can finally present to you - my list of books for humanities nerds!
To put it simply, these are books I think broach topics that are close to the humanities nerds' interests - sociology, history, art, anthropology, political sciences... And sure, they could be considered "boring", but if you're into the humanities - you'll have a ball with them! (and, of course, anyone can enjoy these!)
The Goblin Emperor, by Katherine Addison
5 stars | 446 pages | standalone, but there are spin-offs | queer side character
This is the book that spurred this list, so, if you want a longer review, I have it on my blog. But suffice it to say that The Goblin Emperor is a fairly long and detailed account of what happens in the court of a country of elves when the youngest, unfavoured and half-goblin son of the king ascends the throne. This book is masterful. It seemlessly weaves in personal and political concerns as we follow Maia, the newly crowned emperor. The writing style is slow - we follow the emperor's every day life. We are with him when he rises in the morning until when he wakes up. It waits for something to happen, and is quiet and slow. It's absolutely delightful: despite his politicking, Maia is mostly and more ardently concerned with kindness. He wants to treat people fairly. This not only makes for a sweet main character, it also means the book is a fascinating character study, as well as an incredible feat of world-building. I think nerds will enjoy its slow and traquil pace, its dedication to politics, language and customs of this world and its charming main character.
A Memory Called Empire, by Arkady Martine
5 stars | 462 pages | completed duology | queer main characters
For a sci-fi twist, I think A Memory Called Empire is the way to go. The duology follows Mahit, a citizen of a small satellite of the Teixcalaan Empire, who is chosen as the next ambassador for her home. She must journey to the capital with a very important mission - find out why her predecessor mysteriously disappeared. Again, what there is to enjoy here is lush, expansive world-building. The Teixcalaani feel so, so real. Every little detail was thought of, from their language to their smiles. It's truly impressive, and the prose, I remember, is also beautiful, making these details pop out even more. This is also incredibly political, as Mahit descends into the belly of the beast, so to speak, in search of answers. But it is framed by a pretty straight-foward murder mystery, which might be fun for people used to mystery stories. And the second book broaches first contact! - it's just so much fun! I also have a longer review for this series, if you would like more details! Nerds will be drawn to the expansive world-building, attention to detail, and reflections on empire, memory and legacy.
Elder Race, by Adrian Tchaikovsky
4 stars | 201 pages | standalone | no one's queer, I don't think :(
This one might be a good pick for veterans of SFF - it has a fun gimmick! You must've heard the phrase "any science advanced enough in undistinguishable from magic", attributed to Arthur C. Clarke. This book takes that concept and runs with it. For Lynesse, a princess in a medieval society, Elder Nyr's "giant tower" is magical, and he, a magician. For Elder Nyr, an anthropologist come from a different planet, his interests are scientific, and his "tower", a spaceship. The fun of the novella is that we flip-flop between these two people's perspectives, so that half the story is a sci-fi, and the other half, a fantasy. I found this story to be unique, and to understand its place in the speculative genre quite well. It defies expectations and conventions in a creative way that I think nerds familiar with them will enjoy!
The Traitor Baru Cormorant, by Seth Dickinson
5 stars | 399 pages | uncompleted series | queer main characteres
Another good bet is The Traitor Baru Cormorant, the first installment in the Masquerade Series, which is not finished yet. It follows Baru, who, as a child, watches her country be colonized by the Masquerade Empire. She vows revenge, and to destroy the empire from the inside out. In this installment, she is finally trusted to be sent as an Imperial Accountant to Aurdwynn, a famously ungovernable territory... This one is very, very brain-y. It's dense political fantasy, and I admit I had some trouble following the economics, sometimes - that was never my strong suit!! The tapestry of betrayals, alliances and twists is rich, intricate and realistic. People have diverse interests, are multi-faceted individuals, and yet have a reason to be acting they way they are acting. This makes for satisfying plot lines, and incredible twists. I still haven't recovered from what the first book did to me, to be honest. Nerds, if you want to be dazzled and made to work for it, pick this one up. The Traitor Baru Corumorant will have you scratching your chin, thinking hard and having a lot of fun with (yay!) economics and accounting!
I have a couple more of these if anyone is interested :) And as always, if you need a book rec, feel free to send me an ask!

Monaco - FP1-FP3: report + results
FP1: Good early afternoon, you who like to read my usual walls of text! The Monaco weekend is here! Most of drivers are at home in Monaco and they came into the paddock smiling and obviously well rested. No jetlag or other unpleasant things. It´s sunny, warm, 22°C – track is 39°C, so I hope everyone will take it easy… but trust me, the biggest drama will come in quali when 20 drivers will be stuffed on that short slow track. Well, maybe the two pitstop rule will change something, but now I cannot tell – even the strategies already seem to be pretty crazy. We have Adrian Newey in the paddock first time from the moment he left RedBull… his famous red folder turned the colour into green and well, he said several words about the Aston Martin factory and problems he found there… but I will speak about that later. Now let´s look on the track. Nearly every team changed their wings (and colours) as it was awaited, so let´s hope there will be no crash because of that.

Both RB drivers are the first on the track, so let´s watch how fast this surface will evolve. We have variety of tires here, so it will not be easy to observe everything, especially on this short distance. Nearly instantly we had the yellow flag, Charles was in the problems because he had no grip and went off, but he is safely back and we can continue. Charles made the fastest lap not long time after with both Astons being behind him followed by Hulk, Ham, Oscar, Olie, Yuki, George and Max, but this will surely change very fast as the track evolves like crazy. Lando did better than everyone, Max too…but he was on the hard tires. This shows, that it will not matter which tires the teams will have here, because this track is simply slow as everyone knows. But we have yellow flag here again! And it´s not only the trip off the track! Charles has his front wing damaged! Was it the contact with the wall?

He… wait… did he hit Lance? How?! Ah, the hairpin… well, Lance was moving from (probably) Kimi´s way and as he made it back. Charles, who absolutely could not see the Aston Martin, hit Lance´s back. Ouch, ouch… but this was not Charles´ mistake, also it was not Lance´s mistake. Both of them could not see each others´ car – but they must be told about the other one by their race engineers. And… here we go. Lance´s race engineer told Lance about Charles in the moment Charles had already crashed into the other car. Lancito is just like *sigh* „He crashed into my back, I did hear nothing from you.“ Naaaah, not nice for both drivers. Definitely Lance´s race engineer´s fault. The red flag is flying and it´s really not the situation we would want. We have a lot of debris on the track from the impact and it must be cleaned, so the drivers head into the pits and the track marshalls rush to do their work and sweep all the carbon (Not Carbono, you morons!).

When peeking into the Aston Martin garage, we can see the man, who sees the air: Adrian Newey, the biggest and mightiest magician in F1 with 224 wins, 12 constructors´ championships, 14 drivers´ championships and 538 podiums behind his belt. He watches Fernando´s car, frowning. Well… of course there will be a lots of work there, Adrian, but damn, you will manage to make a rocket from this certain car for the next year! A rocket with the Honda engine like RB19 was. Just…. I hope that he will bring victory also to Astons like he did many times before for other teams. The green flag finally flies and the session continues in several minutes and I am sure, that every race engineer will be surely telling everything to their drivers from now. So, after 20 minutes we have Lando as the fastest with 1:13:036 followed by Oscar, Max, Ham, Nando, Carlos, George, Pierre, Hulk and Charles, but with this tire mix I hardly can tell who will be better or not.

We have seen several barrier brushes from McLarens and also several bold rookies, but fortunately, no other crash. Both Ferraris do pretty good job too and there it´s clearly the experience. We could notice old Jos observing… well, he crashed here in 1996, heh. But, well, nearly everyone did in that hellish race back then… it was a pure massacre even with a crash in the formation lap I think. Many contacts, many failures… and it brought literally a miraculous winner, Olivier Panis (No, I did not rename this certain driver. Yes, as a kid I laughed a lot every time he was driving.) But let´s skip back into the present. Max who obviously was not happy with the car and the traffic, uttered some BEEEEEEPs. Yes, the traffic, this will be a massive problem here as usual. We have drivers in the pits in the middle of the session and we will have to wait for a while for next results… but I hope they will not spend more time there. No, it was not more than necessary, so after 40 minutes of this session we have Charles as the fastest with 1:11:964 followed by Lando, Oscar, Carlos, Ham, Alex, Nando, George, Max and Yuki.

In the Aston garage we can see Adrian scribbling something into his notes, looking at Lance´s car… and I think, that we will see this often, because at it was said, there was a shitton of things which were needed to be fixed in both factory and also here. First things planned for the next year car were tested and it obviously helped a lot. Only that tactics... I would rant again. Meh. Hey, we have the yellow flag out! What is this now? Probably someone off the track for a while. And whoooooa! Ham… he FLIED! It must have hurt his car and also him. He skipped over the kerb before the harbor and all fours were in the air! Holy cow! We could also hear some angry noise from Yuki, who BEEEEEEEEPed about someone ahead of him right on the finish line. Last seconds are ticking and in a short moment we will know the final results. Gabi caused another yellow flag, because he went off the track, so we will not see another fast lap. Well, Charles remained the fastest one in FP1 followed by Max, Lando, Alex, Oscar, George, Carlos, Pierre, Ham and Nando. Lancito was given +1 place on the grid penalty for that contact with Charles. That was the first free practice, people, see you in several hours in FP2!

FP2: Welcome again! The second practice is here and we could hear, that Lance needed to have his gearbox changed as it got a hit in that „inchident“. Not nice. But let´s skip onto the track. Nothing much have changed, it´s still warm and sunny, but as I can see, this time we can notice more mediums and hard tires than softs…. still, as we could observe, the mediums and softs are the same here - or at least they have been until now. And wow, wow, wow! We have the yellow flag! Isack clipped the wall and had an instant puncture… and caused a red flag as he stopped his car on the spot! He is pretty angry at himself and the team allows him to bring the car back into the pits. Ouch. But well, it really was only a clip, small one. It looks like Isack has no much more damage on his car and that´s good. The debris was swiped and in a short time the drivers are allowed back onto the track. There´s a huge queue in the pits and we have to wait some time for everyone to come out from there.

The laptimes are still better and better, Nando made the purple second sector and McLarens are even faster and… holy mackerel! Ouuuuch, that was not nice! We have Oscar in the wall… like BAM absolutely from nowhere?! Yellow and after several seconds also the red flag are instantly flying and we can see, that he left his front wing in - or better said - under the wall and he now slowly heads back to the pits. He is obviously all right and…well, he can be back after the nose of his car is changed. The time is still ticking. After several minutes we have some results, so, after 20 minutes of this session we have Charles as the fastest with 1:12:103 followed by Oscar, Kimi, George, Ham, Pierre, Max, Lando, Alex and Nando. We could also see Max ranting about one from the Saubers, Gabi probably, impending around the swimming pool, BEEEEEPs were flying like sparrows. The drivers are soon back on the track, so we can observe what happens.

There´s a huge queue in the pitlane again and I can clearly imagine how „happy“ the drivers are about it. And wow, wow, wow… let´s look how fast is Fernando, when he has no-one impeding! He made 1:12:087 and he is currently the fastest! Even faster than Charles! Ham managed it faster, but Nando took the fastest lap back by nearly 0,2s, holy Senna … well, the experience clearly spoke during last minutes as these two are the most experienced drivers from all. Charles again managed to be better and Lando too! Hell, that´s something! Most of the grid is now on mediums or softs and the race line is forming on the track, so we can await better and better times. Especially Charles is literally flying here (Ham too, but he did not like that flight)! Can he soothe the tifosi through the quali and the race? Hard to tell, but let´s look at the results after 40 minutes of FP2. Charles is the fastest with 1:11:355 followed by Lando, Ham, Nando, Alex, Max, George, Carlos, Oscar and Olie.

We could hear angry Nando… being distracted by others on their slow laps simply missing the corner 10. Well… it´s like that here. Some drivers maybe want to avoid impeding like that, some not. They are only shortening their way by this. A miracle happened and we can see Lawson on the third place. Ahem… how? He somehow found a gap in the traffic paradise. Both Ferraris do the perfect work, obviously. Would someone of you tell that? I would not after Imola, but they surely deserve good Friday after that suffering from last week. We have another yellow flag, Isack is slow as he has some damage on his car caused by clipping his left side into the wall… and he drags some wallpaper along with him. Maybe it is for the F1 movie. Fortunately he made it back into the pits and the team can fix the car again. In several minutes we have a freen flag, so, let´s continue the second free practice in Monaco. What more can it bring to us?

Err… next yellow flag. This time it was Max in the first turn. He needs the reverse gear and it took a while as he does not use it often. We could notice the changed brake duct on Max´s car. It´s quite bigger and more complex. Is it possible, that RedBull invented something for this certain race? Or was it invented through the winter and added today? Who knows? We have three minutes to go and McLarens are fighting with Ferraris for the fastest lap in local narrow streets. Gabi brushed the barrier - but fortunately no damage was done, and Max is trying to set some decent lap. Last seconds are ticking, and he did not manage it – probably it was testing of the race pace. So, last seconds are away and we can tell, that both Ferraris and McLarens were super strong in this session, and that the newbies did quite good job too. Charles was the fastest one followed by Oscar, Ham, Lando, Liam, Isack, Nando, Alex, Kimi and Max. That was the second practice, thank you for reading and see you tomorrow!
Add: Olie was. Punished, he will have +10 places on the grid, because he overtook a blink of an eyeafter the red flag flashed. Ouch. Not nice.

FP3: Good early afternoon again! The last free practice is here and there are many questions to answer: did RedBull invent some solution over the night? Will the newbies surprise us again? Will we see any red or yellow flag during today? No one knows, so let´s watch! The day is sunny, similar to yesterday: 21°C air, 38°C has the track, so we cannot await some problems with the tires. We have Ham and RBs on the track as the first ones, so let´s look what will they show us. One by one the drivers are going onto the track, but most of them is waiting. As one of the RBs is driving around the harbor and the swimming pool, I look at the yachts there, searching for Fernando´s one, because it´s easy to recognize with the sun panels. Let´s peek on the track. Only Saubers, RBs, Franco and Estie are on the track after 10 minutes, having all the streets for themselves, so we will obviously have to wait for much longer time than we awaited… and I have some time to pour some good drink for myself and prepare some snack.

So, in next five minutes half of the grid is driving and others are joining. Well, we will have some results after 20 minutes, yay! Err… we have yellow flag instead as Hulk got the last corner totally wrong, but fortunately not so much, so he did not crash. Nando and both Merc still are not on the track. Meh, guuuuuuys! Come on! Kimi joined soon and others too! Good! Err… Nando is back in the pits. Looks like another tire scrapping session for Astons. Traditions. But, well, after 20 minutes we have Charles as the fastest with softs and 1:12:712 and… wait, wait, wait… I still have not tasted that wine and I am already drunk? Lancito?! Second fastest?! On mediums?! Holy Strollonso ship! I haven´t awaited this! Err… let´s continue. Lando is third, followed by Max, Yuki, Hulk, Oscar, Ham, Isack and Gabi. Nando and George still haven´t set their measured laptime, but I hope they will manage it and we will be able to get some insight into this mess before the quali.

George made his lap and he is 8th now, Nando still did not. Ahead McLarens are kicking their ankles with Ferraris and Alex, who somehow found himself mixed in the top 5. It nearly looks as if Red Bulls are saving the softs for quali, but Max did the good job even on the mediums! He set 1:11:961 and he is the fastest. Who will be better? First 10 is stuffed in one second now and there´s person nearly from every team! Even Saubers! Isack nearly crashed into Yukino in the end of the tunnel, but fortunately both of them managed it… because that could have been a massive hit. RedBulls obviously found some speed and they are 1+2 now a little while before the half of the session. Both are on mediums. But hey! Ferraris managed to mix in on softs! Yukino had some problem with Estie in the final corner, but it is not the first and last time. So, in the middle of the session we have Max as the fastest one with 1:11:233 followed by Charles, Ham, Alex, Yuki, Lando, Oscar, George, Carlos and Nando.

We can hear a huge praise from Carlos towards the team. He feels good in the car and „It´s the right thing for him to see where he can be quicker.“ Good job, Williams! Take good care of him! On the other side, Lawson brushed the wall slightly, fortunately, nothing bad happened, it was only a touch. We have all drivers in the pits and soon we will go to their final runs before the quali. So, 20 minutes before the chequered flag we have Max as the fastest one with 1:11:961 followed by Charles, Lando, Ham, Alex, Yuki, Hulk, George, Oscar and Kimi. Will anyone add into the usual mix of top 10? Alex just made a super close move around the wall without brushing it… same as Max. Niiice to watch, people! And Max is improving his own laptime as he switched onto the softs! Will it be real? No! He did not improve his time by only a flea´s dick! Others are quarter a second behind him, but they are trying to chase better laptime!

Carlos managed to skip onto the 6th place and wow, wow! Williams really belongs to the mix, because Alex is 4th now! Hell, that´s awesome! Charles did not manage to upgrade his time, will any of McLarens do? Lando improved a bit, but still, heis far away from Max. Alex does quite good job, very decent! He improved his time, but not the position. Will Charles find the right way? No! Improvement yes, but Max is clearly untouchable - at least for now! Ham took the 4th place from Alex, but for how long? Lando is on the good lap now, but he did not improve much, still a third position! Oscar managed to skip onto the 2nd place, still, far from Max who is on mediums. Nando, the only one who is on the mediums except Max, is 11th. Finally! Charles managed to be a flea´s dick faster than Max… but he went on softs. Max clearly is not a fan of C6 tires. Strange, but real.

Whoa! Charles moved it under 1:11! He made 1:10:953! Really good job! He wants next victory here in the row? Of course he does! We had a yellow flag for a second, but the green followed, probably some trip out of the track. Last three minutes, people! We will see the fastest laps now! Err… we will not. There is a yellow flag followed by the red one. We can see Ham´s car with his right rear tire bundled in some piece of the wallpaper while is right front is entirely missing. Ouch, not nice! How did it happen? Oh… a little snap. Well, that happens. The driver is all right, but… will his gearbox be? Much less was enough for Lance´s gearbox… but the team will probably tell us. The session will not continue as there were only two minutes till the chequered flag, so we have Charles as the fastest one with 1:10:953 followed by Max, Lando, Oscar, Ham, Alex, Lawson, Carlos, Yuki and Kimi. That was the FP3, thank you for reading and see you during the quali in several hours!
