Time the Series - Episode 1

Another time traveling show. This time by expectations are basically on the floor.

So before I say anything here's the official synopsis: Foam, a famous actor, saw Chris, the lover, killed in front of him by the police. But fate gives Foam a chance to go back and correct the past for what he did wrong, causing Chris's death. When a mysterious man gives a clock that can travel back in time to Foam, will Foam be able to fix the past and save a lover's life? Only time will prove it! MDL You can watch it on YT, Gaga. I watch the cut version, if anyone watches the full version please let me know what I missed. Not that I'm all that invested but still. This is basically a "I watched it so you don't have to" type of review so obviously, all spoilers from here on. Skip to the end for my short review.

We begin with a police chase that ends with Chris being caught but then there's a sniper and he gets shot. Very exciting already.

Cut to Foam waking up in bed and promptly pouring himself red wine while he cries and reflects on his lost love. Warning for singing and guitar playing in flashback.

The next day he's passed out and won't answer his phone and everyone is very upset, cause he's an actor and there's a lot of people waiting for him to shoot a commercial. There's already a war of managers happening btw. The one in pink is Foam's manager, the other one wants to be his manager. I'll be calling her the bad manager from here on for reasons which will become obvious.

So eventually he arrives and they shoot a commercial for some skin product that is amazing for the skin if we believe the people that show up to help Foam with his lines, cause the boy is struggling.

And apparently it's his birthday and he makes the weirdest call to his mum to ask her to wish happy birthday and the subs have the mom saying "Hello, dear" but there's actually no sound from the other side of the conversation. Amazing.

After this the drama really begins. And I mean there's so much happening and none of it is good.

So really quickly: - Birthday party where Foam is the DJ and there is some really bad dance acting happening. - The bad manager drugs Foam and assaults him and is interrupted by the good manager. - The two managers insult each other in front of passed out Foam and a physical fight ensues. Slap, screaming, slap, insult, slap, begging, more slapping. This is all very dramatic btw, almost lakorn level dramatic. Glass on the floor, bad manager picks it up and stabs the good manager. - Bad manager's bodyguards take her and Foam wakes up with the bloody glass shard on his hand.

Panic sets in, everyone comes and for some reason some dude is filming this whole thing. And we get our second police chase of the episode. This time Foam is the one doing the running.

Foam hides in a dark ally where he meets a stranger with a shining pink necklace that invites him to his place and of course he goes, because why not?

Then he recognizes the necklace/watch because he gave his boyfriend one that looks exactly like it. And then this:

Guy in alley - gives Foam pink shiny watch - dead boyfriend appears.

They immediately jump each other, as you do when all of a sudden your dead boyfriend is in front of you again, and Foam wakes up thinking it was all a dream. But was it? I have no idea.

Foam wakes up, hits himself, hurts himself and wonders why he's in his old apartment. He goes outside and it's five years before Chris died. The end.

So... to recap. I don't even know what to say. This is from MFlow, the same company that brought us the mess that was Beyond The Star so my expectations were really low.

With that said, I can't in good conscience tell any of you to watch this. It's not good. From the previews it seems Foam is going to meet Chris all over again except he won't remember him. Fun times all over again. I'll be honest. I probably won't be watching this, but come next tuesday if I have nothing better to do I might check it out. Depends how much I remember the experience and how curious I get about how they will deal with the time traveling. I obviously have not learned my lesson.

June 2023 Wk 3 

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying most.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Step By Step (Tues WeTV & Gaga) ep 9 of 12 - There sure is a lot of drinking in this show (who am I to talk?). Omg so awkward: The not-break-up not-confession. I have heartburn. Also I could not watch Jeng break down. Just nope. Then time jump? If that was our DOOM episode the timing is off. Or next week is the final? Or we get 3 eps of domestic bliss and sexitimes? I’m confused. 

La Pluie (Sat iQIYI) ep 9 of 10 - I like how trope-subversive this show is - first soulmates, then love triangle, now the faen fatal. NO SINGING. Oh good. They didn’t! Yay! So yeah I still love it. But I am also still a touch scared of where it might go. This one can’t be trusted. 

Be My Favorite (Fri YouTube) ep 5 of 12 - not a bad ep this week or was I too drunk to register nuance and damage? You decide. Trash watch here.

Luminous Solution (Sat Gaga) ep 5 of 6 - I always have to psyche myself up to watch this show, because I want to fast forward through most of it, but it’s on Gaga so that’s damn near impossible. At least this is the penultimate episode. I think after 3 BLs I can safely say Gun is just not a good actor. Speaking of... crying clothed in the shower? I haven’t seen that trope in years. But I LOVE the high school boys and their story so much. Love Sick level of earnest floppy goodness, I’m such a sucker for this kind of romance. I want them to be in a completely different BL. I’m so conflicted. I NEED this show to end so I can decide how I feel about it.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Love Tractor (Korea Weds iQIYI) eps 5-6 of 8 - So much is happening, evil x-boyfriend shows up. We got flashbacks to coming-out drama + nasty dad (super unusual for a KBL). But baby’s first taste of desire is hilarious. This one is full of lovely contrasts, and contrasting life experiences. It’s all about support and neglect. 

Tokyo in April AKA Shigatsu no Tokyo wa (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 2 of 8 - Very much full of hero worship and giving me My Beautiful Man vibes (only softer and office set). “Dazzling” = always an interesting word when it comes up in JBL subs. It’s clearly a Japanese word/concept like kawaii  that is more complex than the English word being used. Meanwhile, this being Japan we get lots of hints as to separation and dark past events. 

Tie The Knot (prev Under the Same Sky) (Pinoy YouTube) eps 1-2 of 8 - From OXIN Films (Rainbow Prince), based on a true story (?!), Briggs's family runs a bridal business but he has never fallen in love until he meets a groom to be in an arranged marriage. EXACTLY the same premise at Mame’s forthcoming Wedding Planner. There are so many characters and prospective couples (including a v bi girl with a female fuck buddy, not seen that in a BL before) that it is a little hard to keep straight (heh). I’m sure it will shake out. It’s intriguing so far, if a touch silly. I actually like the arranged marriage premise because the two rich kids involved in it are so weirdly kind & platonically sweet to each other, even if they’re both on the same page about it only being for show. 

Vian the series (Vietnam YouTube ) ep 7 & 8 of 12 - Apparently there is very little difference between a cat and a demanding princess of a boyfriend. That clocks. Basically this was the dating times. 

Naked Dinner AKA Zenra Meshi (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 11 of 12 - There is a lot more meat to this silly little BL then I thought there would be given the premise, but it’s Japan so that’s as it should be. But, as it’s Japan there’s also a little too much cringe for me. I do enjoy how generous Japan is with late bloomers and I would def like to host a kimchi party  but otherwise... meh. 

Stupid Genius (Vietnam Fri YouTube) ep 3 of 6 - Bi erasure still alive and well I see. This one remains fine for VBL but no more than that.

It’s airing but ...

House of Stars (Thai Mon iQIYI) 12 eps - I bounced at ep 3. Will binge if told it is worth it at end.

Stay (Pinoy YouTube) 7 eps - It’s mostly in English and set in LA so I’m not bothering but the first one did drop.

Ever After (Pinoy YouTube) - I investigated but as spies reported it's a real mess (not a hot one). Don’t bother. 

About Us but Not About Us (Pinoy Prime?) - from 2022 supposed to be finally getting inter distribution, didn’t show in my territory. A professor grieving the loss of his partner meets an ambitious literature student. I’m not fussed.

In case you missed it

What Did You Eat Yesterday movie, BL Express posted a review. I’ve yet to get hold of it but if you enjoy Our Dining Table this is it’s grown up parent series & movie. 

Café in Love - I finally got around to watching this. And frankly it hits all the tropes but is so damn bad. The setting is cute, the central brotherly relationship is sweet, the side cast is v queer (baby gay has all these auntie queens catting about) and some complex bisexual awakenings but… but… everything else is a chemistry void. Some fun language wordplay and exploration of cultural tropes like cheek kissing does not save it from an unnecessary amount of punching  and a but ton of sexual harassment and statutory rape. No thank you. I had to rewatch Destiny Seeker to get over this. 3/10 

I gave up 

Takumi-kun Series 6: Nagai Nagai Monogatari no Hajimari no Asa (Japan Sun ????) 10 eps - NO ONE ASKED FOR THIS and no, I have no idea where to get it, why would I? Apparently it finished. I still can’t find it but it’ll be off this list next week.

Why You (Khmer ????) - Billed as a horror romance, not sure if this is a movie or a series where it aired... nothing except that it exists.

Next Week Looks Like This:

3 BLs are finishing but nothing is starting up. We running lean these days. 

Just started today (Sunday): Dinosaur Love (Thai iQIYI) Trailer 10 eps - from Ultimate Troop about a uni student, Rak, whose partner cheats on him with Rak's best friend. This gives bad boy hazer Dino an opportunity to hit on Rak at last. From The Yearbook people so I shouldn’t watch this as it airs. After Remember Me? I swore never again with them. But there’s so little on right now, I might fall on the pulp sword. 

I’ll include it in next week’s summation.

I've been trying to watch the horror stuff you recommended (been in a mood), but I couldn't find them on my usual pirate sites. I was wondering:

where do you usually watch your lakhorn and movies, if it's not on Netflix?

Also: I'm still trying to find the damn time to write those สาธุ rambles. It's just that I also have some goddamn manga ramble clogging up my neural network... and other pretty important not-my-day-job-kinda-work. My break is gonna end soon and I still haven't fucking done half the things I wanna do!

P.S. Luckily, I have Terror Tuesday for now, bwahahaahaha!

For older Thai horror films, I have very fortunately been able to find them with Vietnamese subtitles on a plethora of different pirate sites (I guess the Vietnamese audience really enjoys Thai horror, they have subtitled basically every Thai horror film in existence).

But here are some grey-watching links to the horror stuff I've recommended, other than the ones available on Netflix (Girl From Nowhere, Terror Tuesday...). For grey watching sites, I'd say the best chances to find Thai series/films are KissKH, Dramacool, occasional Dailymotion, Bilibili.

But other than the horror stuff I've recommended, for Thai lakorns in general, they're often available on platforms like Netflix, iQIYI, WeTV, Gagaoolala with subs provided so I would say these are the main "official platforms" I watch them on. The pirate site I use most often is KissKH.

Honestly it's sad that most older lakorns/Thai films are often not subtitled since there's such a niche audience for them so I'm always grateful to fansubbers in this day and age.

Very much looking forward to your สาธุ rambles once you've got time to write them. I hope you're able to watch stuff you've planned on before your break ends \(￣︶￣*\))

Tencent Three-Body 2023 = if the Killer 1989 were a hardscifi 30 episode TV show.

Just finished the 30 episodes of Tencent's Three Body Problem in tandem with the first two books of the series; almost done with the third! So entertaining, thought-provoking, and refreshing. Confirms all the fantasy/science entertainment franchises are soft and dumb in comparison. All the math culture philosophy and science are very easy to understand; nothing over grade school level. And if you don't like all the STEM you might like the bromance and soap opera feel reminiscent of the Killer 1989. SDF-1 Macross 1982 Anime might be the most similar proto work for the main scifi arc. This first Three Body Live Action Chinese Production was much more satisfying than the Wandering Earth 2019 Movie. The Dark Forest adaptation Bilibili Anime is only at 9/15 episodes released and so far the uncanny valley 3D is too off-putting. Might try the Minecraft fanimation and Tencent comic book after the Netflix version comes out. The audiobooks are great for those that might feel reading science and math will be too much like homework.

Oh no, he's smoking again!

After reposting this Tag of the Week -post by @lanwangjihouse and calling WWX smoking hot (which he is), I got an inspiration to make an edit where he is... smoking. Literally. And then I just had to add LWJ. Because.

Anyway, the smoking hot Yiling Laozu there is an edit of two screencaps from ep33. I do not usually have a clear plan on how I'm gonna do the editing of an image (and if I had to repeat the process I most likely couldn't 😄), so I decided, for once, to loosely document the different steps on how I ended up with that one. If anyone's interested, check below the cut (it's not very specific, though).

My computer is an ages-old relic with no proper software, so I make all my edits (and screencapping) on my smartphone, using mostly free image editing apps from the Google app store. I usually jump between various apps when making an edit, using one for something and another for something else, as I have not yet come across one that could be used to do everything. I have mentioned the apps I used on this one, in case someone wants to check those out. They are pretty handy 🙂.

Below are the original screencaps with the dark edges and the WeTV logo removed (with my phone's photo editor), and the first trial of the fitted together image (made with an app called "Text on Photo") to see if they work (the first cap roughly resized to match the second):

Not an exact match, but close enough, although in the first cap, the fingers of the left hand are more shadowed. So, tweaking. Below are the images after a bit of sharpening and overall lightening; I also further lightened the left hand in the first image and darkened it in the second; I lightened his face as well and added some colour saturation on it (all with an app called "Snapseed"). The match is better now:

Not perfect but good enough. Next, I removed part of the upper right corner and the tip of the left hand's middle finger from the first cap (with a "Background Eraser"-app) to show his hair and finger tip from the second cap. I also more or less removed the black box (background from the "Text on Photo") from the upper left corner of the combined image (using my phone's photo editor):

At this point, I remastered the image (using my phone's photo editor), then tweaked the colours and contrast a little bit further (with "Photoshop Express"-app):

Getting there... but the left hand and the area just above it still needed fixing, so I did some blending and painting by hand (using an app called "Sketchbook" which is pretty neat) to take care of that (painted some further little wisps of resentful energy above his left middle finger while I was at it):

And a bit more tweaking of colours and brightness etc. (with the "Photoshop Express"-app):

Then I decided to desaturate his hands a bit to better match his face (with the "Snapseed"-app) and re-coloured some of the highlights on his fingers by hand, because the one on his left ring finger was too blue compared to the others (so back to the "Sketchbook"-app):

Dear Sparrow, You have really amazing analytical skills and your detailed knowledge about the Naturoverse is just as impressive! It's always so interesting to read your posts and I value your opinion a lot. Now to my question... How would a realistic romantic relationship between Naruto and Sasuke look like in our eyes?

I'm not really interested in knowing who is seme and who is uke, but what their couple dynamic would look like? What would be their struggles? What would they talk about?

For example, what if Naruto wanted a family and Sasuke didn't. Would Naruto -as a Hokage- be hesitating on sending Sasuke on dangerous missions? What are their plans for the future?

Or how would they search for/react to/display/intimacy? Would they stay closeted (like they kinda are in Boruto XD)? Or would they be openly gay and live with each other? How would each of them react to homophobia towards them? I'm curious about your head canon! ♥️

But you asked the wrong person!!!! LOLOL.... I’ve never read any SNS fanfiction so far  to even base my headcanon upon (except for 1 which had just 3 chapters and I just started 1 very recently)

But,

I can say you one thing. 

As you know very well that I treasure SNS ship a lot, A LOTTTTTT..... So I won’t just compare this ship with anything so easily. And if I do, which means it’s really worthy. I came to ship SNS only because Naruto and Sasuke’s interaction always reminded me of this other Ship I loved a lot before watching Naruto. 

And after finishing Naruto, I came to this conclusion that If Naruto and Sasuke were allowed to be together, then probably they will display their love very similar to the other Couple I loved. Because culturally they share the same value and the world is Ancient. Just like Naruto series has Chakra, they also have Spiritual Energy in their abdomen. 

And also, the Couple shares the same dynamics with SNS... That is, One is a  Bright, Cheerful, Messy, Prank loving Bubble and the Other is an Unexpressive, Stern, Elegant, Intense loving Heart-throb.... 

Oh by the way, in this Dynamics everything is similar to SNS except for One.... What happens if Sasuke stayed in the Light Path and Naruto went to the Dark Path??? What will Sasuke do for Naruto?? 

If that interest you, then this series will be for you.

If you want to know my Head Canon.... You have to watch this series and I am sure you will never regret it!!!

Not to mention, Just like SNS has SNS toys, pens, mugs, perfumes and many other merchandise.... That couple also has a lot of merchandise and is extremely popular. It was based on a BL Novel and got adapted into Anime as well as Live Action Series... Live Action is what I am talking about.... It also has a Chibi Version of Anime as well....  

Novel has all the ‘Hot’ contents towards the very end.... But Live Action has passed that couple off as Soulmates because of Censorship... But still the Show Creators had found a round-about way to make the couples Marry on-screen indirectly in our plain-sight.... LOLOLOL...  Just like how Rikkudou Sennin made an unofficial Marriage for SNS.... 

If you ever decided to give this amazing series a try.... I suggest you to start with the Live Action, then Novel, Anime, Chibi-Anime.... In this particular order... Because Live Action has no Adult Contents and so Pure just like in Naruto Manga.... It will really make you gush over them a lot and then if you want to really know how they ‘Get together’, you can read the Novel linked here..[Link]

That series Name is The Untamed (Chen Qing Ling),based on the Novel named Mo Dao Zu Shi, available in Netflix, Viki Rakuten or in WeTV app. Please don’t google or Youtube to spoil yourself.... Just Go straight to Netflix and Watch it....

So, Please don't google about this and try to watch it without any spoilers because the plot is equally captivating as our Main Characters’ chemistry.... Lots of Angst, Tears, Brotherly sentiment, Brother-Sister Bond, no annoying Female Characters.... And Don't just watch it for the fluff stuffs because the story and romance is like Yin and Yang... You really have to pay attention to the story to understand their Bond. 

First 2 episodes might be hazy... because the story is Non-Linear... But don’t drop it.. Starting from Episode 3 you will really get into the Flashback and then later you will understand what First 2 episodes are all about... 

So, Yeah!!!! The Tagline itself touts them as Soul Mates... 

This is my Head Canon about the Adult version of SNS... And the Actors are really handsome and talented enough to portray our Naruto and Sasuke in a Soulful Manner with such Tenderness. 

After watching this series, even if you have a shred of doubt that Naruto and Sasuke may be Brothers.... it will all fly off to the trash Can because, the show clearly distinguished how Brothers would Act around each other and how Soulmates act in a subtly Romantic Way. I wish those Antis watch this series and understand the meaning of Soulmates & SNS... That’s only my wishful thinking...

Speaking of not me, i’m just blown away by P’Nuchie’s directing style, i love her so much her work is brillant so beautiful everything is so thought about & i can’t believe i’ve been missing out on her work for all those year before now!!!

Do you know where i could watch other works she directed? Is it easily available for english speakers?

She is absolutely one of the greatest directors of her time and I definitely recommend checking out her work! That being said, I do want to warn you that her best works are not everyone's cup of tea so please watch the trailers and read the synopses carefully checking for triggers before going in.

Her debut film The Blue Hour (2015) is what made me fall in love with her work. It's so incredibly executed it blows my mind. The movie also stars Gun and Oab as the main characters so there's the benefit of having familiar faces to help cope with the very bleak and at times quite violent imagery. This movie is very trippy though, Tam has a very loose grip on reality due to some unspecified illness/disorder so the entire time you're left questioning which of the events actively happened and what was just part of his delusions/hallucinations. It's been a couple years since I watched it and have seen it multiple times now but I still am not entirely sure what did and did not happen. A shortened for TV version is available to watch on Netflix in the Thirteen Terrors anthology but I must warn you if you watch the cut version it will be even more confusing than it already is. Also the cut version cuts out a lot of the scenes showing Tam and Phoom's relationship so... Fully subbed versions of the film are available on most illegal asian show streaming sites though so if you can't find any legit ways to watch it I recommend kissasian.

Her current most critically acclaimed work is Malila: The Farewell Flower (2017). Like The Blue Hour, it has a lot of mature and at times bleak themes. This is a film I haven't been able to find on any legal or not so legal sites atm (tho mdl claims it is on netflix and prime so maybe it's available in different countries?) so I can't give you too many details about it. I recommend checking out MDL for details. Or ask Axelle (@piningbisexuals) since she has actually watched it. What I can say is that it is a very artistic film with a lot of depth and explores queerness and queer love. It also isn't a happy ending but it's not really a film you go into looking for cheer anyway.

Then there's After Dark, a collection of four interlinked horror stories. I actually didn't notice P'Nuchie was a writer and director for this series until I went to her MDL page today even though this series has been on my watchlist for some time since I watched the trailer with Jane. All the more reason to watch it now! This one is a wetv series so if you have access to that it should be easy enough to watch. If not, it is available on dramacool as well.

Finally, there's Girl Next Room: Security Love starring Gigie. This was her first time directing a series and it came out really good. I highly recommend watching it, especially since it's just 6 eps and available on yt (gmm series) so it's the easiest to watch. This is also an easier watch on account of there being no violence or gore or death xD

(But I personally recommend starting your journey with The Blue Hour because it just feels right.)

As for her upcoming work, I'm super excited for Forbidden, which is a mystery horror series with Oab in the cast. I love Oab so I would have checked it out as it is but knowing P'Nuchie directed it just makes it ten times more worth the hype.

ur asking the most chaotic mdzs consumer because i did everything out of order 😭 after watching cql i read the last 20 chapters of the novel, and then season 3 of the audio drama and THEN went back to read/listen from the start gfhdjfhdjshf. 

there’s pros and cons of every adaption and ppl have different tastes depending on if you prefer written, audio, or visual media so i’ll make an overly simplified list of pros and cons/where to access them (i’m guessing you’ve watched cql but in case you haven’t i’ll still include it in this list :3)

i’m not galaxy brained enough to write intricate meta about the differences of each adaption so bare with me 😭

novel  pros: the original material so it’s the truest form of mdzs, complete, very complex and enthralling plot about morality, not censored, covers really dark themes extremely well cons: the only complete english translation is occasionally a bit uncomfy to read (ignore the author’s notes lol), the author writes terrible sex scenes </3 where to read it: full english translation can be read here

donghua pros: IT’S SO PRETTY, like the animation studio’s style is breathtaking, also closely follows novel canon with some minor alterations due to censorship and time constraints, lwj’s voice actor is the same as cql! cons: it’s still incomplete, it can be a bit hard to follow in the beginning if u haven’t read the novel where to watch it: for free on the wetv app  or on youtube 

donghua q pros: it’s currently airing!!, it’s the cutest thing u will ever watch, they’re all 5 minute bonus stories, it’s adorable cons: there are none where to watch it: for free on the wetv app or on youtube

manhua pros: follows the novel almost identically except for the few times when censorship struck (the artist still gave us the kiss tho, bless them), weekly updates every monday morning!!, the chibi panels r always so cute cons: still ongoing and probably won’t be finished for a year or so, can be hard to follow if u haven’t read the novel, the official english translation is a bit awkward (fan translations r better but idk if there’s any up to date ones) where to read it: the original can be read here (only first 25 chaps r free), the official english translation can be read here for free but there’s also a paywall (as of rn chapters 1-99 r free)

audio drama pros: complete!!, follows the novel plot, extremely well produced!!, wwx’s voice actor is the same as cql!, has heaps of extras, everything about the production quality is just *chefs kiss*, the audio drama is so underrated as an adaption and idk why bc it’s so well done cons: it can be a bit strange at first to listen while reading subs (if u don’t understand chinese) but u get used to it, the fansubs can get a bit annoying during certain scenes  where to listen to it: the official version can be found on the missevan app (no subs and gotta pay), and all the fansubs can be found in this discord!, heaps of the extras r also on youtube bonus bc i love the audio drama: listen to this and also this extra.... it’s domestic asmr and what convinced me to listen to the ad properly 🥺

drama pros: completed very easy to get into, very pretty, probably the easiest version to get into for someone who hasn’t read cnovels before cons: it’s the adaption with the biggest plot changes (due to various forms of censorship) where to watch it: netflix (paid), wetv, viki, youtube (all free)

drama ~special edition~ pros: occasionally contains extra shots that didn’t make the original cut, the ending is edited differently just to spice things up cons: they condensed 50 episodes into 20, i still don’t understand the purpose of why it exists ????  where to watch it: wetv and youtube

Ongoing Series - Thai

Bite Me Ep 3 (Viu & Viki) - this one is so pretty and also so painfully slow. In case you were in any doubt both the “call me phi” and the “tasting” are explicit flirting and both men know it. It’s cute. I like it but I can’t imagine many others do. Also the Viki translation team is not doing great on this. My Thai is terrible and even I caught a number of skipped words that would have bettered understanding - some of them double entendre. Ah well. 

Don’t Say No Ep 7 (Line) - I decided this show is just MAME doing fanfic of herself and now I’m quite enjoying it. The recaps continue apace (I insult fanfic by proxy) and I LOVE Leo’s mom. 

7 Project Ep 3 Remember (iQiYi & YouTube) - this was the GL installment and it turned out to be all about the man who broke her heart. Talk about not passing the Bechdel Test. This was supposed to be a lesbian romance and it still managed to be all about a man? Disappointing. In fact, I’m finding that the defining characteristic of this series so far. So I expect next week, BounPrem’s installment, to be equally so. Oh, I’ll keep watching. Disappointment is not betrayal. But I no longer have high expectations. In fact, I no longer have any expectations whatsoever. 

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

- Friend or Lover (YouTube) Ep 6 - still waiting on the final of this Taiwanese indie series. 

Love is Science? (BL sub plot Viki) Ep 13 - Lesbian+Gay solidarity is THE BEST. Only Taiwan would give this to us in a het drama. It’s working itself up to be quite the soap opera though, because breeders always gotta mess things up for everyone. 

Love Is the series (YouTube) Ep 3 - still a confusing number of couples, and gay brothers, and some odd jealousy issues. But it could be a lot worse. 

Peach of Time Ep 6, 7 (WeTV & Viki not USA, I’m finding it on YouTube & DM) - it got a lot more BL romantic than I thought it could. Also multiple kisses in a Korean BL? What IS the world coming to? Frankly the tension of “turning evil” and “was it suicide” is pretty gripping. I’m liking this a lot more than I expected from something I know will end sad. 

In Case You Missed It

Strongberry released a follow up short to A First Love Story from last week. It look really good, of course, teaser here. It’s actually available already but only if you are a member of their Channel. I have to say I am VERY tempted. Could be that’s partly because the older boy reminds me a lot of Tee from Make it Right... 

See You After Quarantine? is a Japan/Taiwan crossover BL set during C19 and I am so excited. It looks like their answer to Gameboys. This is the country pairing I’ve wanted a crossover from MORE THAN ANY OTHER. I love mixed language BLs, and I can’t wait to see the combo of Japan’s old school yaoi sensibilities with Taiwan’s new wave hella gay BL. It’s already started, short 7 min eps airing 2 at a time on Gaga and on Viki in some territories. BRING IT. 

The Tasty Florida posted a teaser. This is a forthcoming Korean BL that is releasing on Viki starting next Thursday Sept 23, 2021. This is the restaurant set one that stars Yoo Hwan of SPEED. I’m very excited!

You’re My Sky upcoming Thai BL with a sports romance foundation dropped a teaser. Not much meat to it but it has some backers so could happen, mostly unknown talent with the only familiar face being the actor who played Ake in Y-Destiny.

I finally caught Taiwanese BL gay drama Light. It’s very dark and very high heat with lots of abuse and incest and stuff, frankly about what you would expect from a cop/hustler pairing. While it reminded me a bit of the Japanese higher heat stuff (Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese or The Novelist series) and it does end happily, it’s a bit too torture porn to qualify as BL. There’s very little “love” going on. Unless you really like dark stuff I’d avoid it.

so yesterday i was watching criminal minds again (wow shocker) again for the first time in like,,,, 3 months??? [that’s not important] on weTV (which was just so happening to air reruns from season 3) and there was one thing that really stuck out to me that i didn’t necessarily think about much until i went into work today

season 3, episode 15 “a higher power” shows the team going up to pittsburgh to investigate a spike in suicides rates in the community under the suspicion that it’s the work of a serial killer (okay, cool, normal fucked up every day BAU life, nothing really sus there)

but what really kinda just hit me out of the blue today was just.... how unaffected jj was by the whole case in general

the team is maybe at most, a few hours away from her hometown, with the main topic of the case being surrounded by multiple suicides and taking her past into consideration (she’s literally a stone’s throw away from her hometown where she lost her sister to suicide) and yet she just.... remains unbothered... she never toys with the necklace around her neck or ever seems uncomfortable despite this case hitting way too close to home

i guess just rewatching this episode really just... opened my eyes into how underdeveloped jj was character wise for a really long time (i mean really we know more about gideon and elle in season 4 than we do jj and they had been gone for at least a season and a half at this point)

i mean.... i guess in in heat we get... something??? when we find out that she’s been seeing will for nearly a year?? cool i guess??? and we do get an episode named after her but really it doesn’t tell us much about her background or dive more into her story other than “oh strauss is forcing me to leave that sucks” but it doesn’t really go much into detail about anything beyond that

oh hotch handpicked her to join the unit but i don’t think it ever gets any deeper than that (when it should have!!!!??!!) [correct me if i’m wrong]]

by season 5 we have a detailed idea about every other character on the team (with the only exception possibly being garcia but i digress)

we know hotch has a younger brother that looks absolutely nothing like him and said brother wants to be a chef

we know rossi came back to the bau because of a cold case that’s gone unsolved for twenty years

we know every year, morgan goes home for his birthday and visits the grave of the john doe he found when he was a teenager

we know way too much about reid and his issues jesus christ

fucking hell we even know about emily’s dark past, how much it still haunts her even before we get the ian doyle arc

even ashley seaver has a deeper storyline than jj at this point like ffs

jj.... well..... she has that boyfriend down in louisiana ig?????

and that’s what becomes annoying

jj’s character really isn’t developed past more than i have a boyfriend and i’m pregnant up until maybe, and that’s a really generous maybe, the episode will gets held hostage at a bank and damn near gets himself killed (we see her with henry.... again, i’m being very generous here)

really, we don’t see jj get any sort of deep development the rest of the team has been getting until 200

i loved seeing her finally get some depth, for her character to finally be treated as if she’s an important asset rather than a pretty face that deals with media

she becomes a character we can sympathize with!!! she has issues and fears and traumas!!! finally!!!

and then they keep expanding on her as the seasons continue!!! like yes!!! this is what i wanted from the beginning!!! jj deserved this!!!

and then

it all comes crashing and burning into a pile of shit with five words

all that character development they had spent building up over the years, after finally starting to get the ball rolling to making jj a solid character the writers decided “,,,,,,let’s just boil her down romantic feelings she kept hidden for....reid.” (of all people????? confusion)

first of all, that’s such an overdone trope in hollywood and in modern times we’re sick of it we need way more flavor than that

second of all it just..... ruins jj’s character right there on the spot

a majority (maybe i’m just generalizing) but most people in the fandom are reid stans and of COURSE they’re going to be absolutely livid at that bitch jennifer jareau pulling that card on their favorite little twink

it makes her look like a bitch

and it literally makes no sense whatsoever

they went on one “date” once in season 1 and it’s never mentioned again until jj confides to emily in the bathroom in the first episode of season 14

they have about as much romantic chemistry as two planks of wood

what was so wrong with jj and reid being best friends/having a sibling like relationship (which would have been a big deal for jj!!! to let someone that close again!!!! but no!!!!!!! jj is woman!!!!!! reid is man!!!! they must have romantic chemistry!!!!!! gross)

Okay but what is the untamed actually about??? (Where do I watch it if I don't have netflix??)

hey there! firstly i’m sorry this took me a few days (i was preoccupied with the holidays haha) but anyway-

ah, what is the untamed about…*whips out my powerpoint* I’M GLAD YOU ASKED! 

so, the untamed (chén qíng lìng) is a chinese drama based on the novel mo dao zu shi. it’s a little hard to explain cuz the plot is kinda complicated BUT basically it takes place in a fantasy world where there are people called cultivators who have magic powers that they use for like….magic sword fighting and playing magic instruments that are also weapons….? (dkfjd yeah idk how else to explain it) and then there’s also dark cultivation which you can use to like, raise the dead and whatnot. and then there are a bunch of sects (groups/families of cultivators), and y’know, struggles for power and all that fun stuff. 

the main character is this guy wei wuxian, and at the beginning you find out he died like 16 years ago and that he was this super powerful cultivator that everyone was afraid of, and he’s just been reincarnated in a new body. the story then follows two timelines: one that starts when he was a teenager leading up to his descent into dark cultivation and eventual death, and the other timeline being after he’s reborn many years later. 

as a teen he meets this other cultivator lan wangji; they’re from different sects and have v different backgrounds etc. so they clash at first but then form an unlikely bond and then….WELL, in the original novel they fall in love. unfortunately in the tv show due to censorship their relationship is never explicitly confirmed as romantic––buuut even so, they really don’t change much about their relationship and it’s still pretty fuckin clear they’re in love dkfdj (and like…the official netflix description still refers to them as “soulmates” so lmao).  a lot of the story centers around lan wangji first trying to prevent wei wuxian from going down the dark cultivation path, and then later sticking by him when he comes back to life and the whole world is against him and it’s just *clenches fist* anyway, point is, their dynamic is just so good and powerful and they invented romance and being soulmates.

kinda went on a tangent there but….anyway, you don’t necessarily need to have read the book to understand the tv show. in fact i tend to recommend people start with watching the untamed because it presents the events of the story in a much more logical way that makes it a lot easier to follow. 

the book is extremely long, like…500k words and it skips back and forth in time a lot, whereas the untamed starts in the present, then goes back into the past and just goes through all the events leading up to the present again and continues from there, so it’s a lot more chronological. the book is worth a read if you have the time just cuz like, it’s Actually Confirmed Gay (although i should also mention it’s uhh quite explicit in some parts so just a lil warning). but yeah again you don’t need to have read it to understand/enjoy the tv series––and honestly besides the few parts that were censored out, it’s almost word-for-word exactly the same as the novel. 

as for where to watch it: i know you mentioned you don’t have netflix––but for anyone else reading this who does have access to netflix, it’s on there *finger guns* but ALSO the entire thing is also on youtube in hq here and if that doesn’t work for whatever reason, it’s also available on wetv here! also the entire show is complete so yaaay!!  

tl;dr - it’s super epic and has amazing characters, it’s just a really good and enthralling story, plus it has magic and swordfighting and a gay romance with a happy ending SO yeah. 

i’ll also just say like i’m super picky about tv shows and i usually have a hard time getting invested in dramas, but it really sucked me in from the very beginning, and i was surprised at how quickly i got through the whole thing and immediately wanted to watch it all over again. it really is just That Good. 

also….everyone in it is really hot. so there’s that. 

anyway that was probably more info than you needed and i’m sorry for rambling but thanks if you read this whole thing. now, GO!! GO WATCH IT!!!!

thx a lot for the lovely OhmFluke updates. there's probably big pressure+expectations if and when they'll do another full series (not counting Close Friends since that felt more like a project). Hopefully it will have a great director+budget, it would be a shame if opportunity is wasted. Oh!MySunshineNight sounds cute but I'm nervous bout it since it's made by a newbie company. Have u heard of the huge Tencent WeTV BL drama? Apparently, the main leads will be a ship that fans have been missing..

No problem! Yeah people have been anticipating them working together again and it's starting to look like they have more than one project lined up. The director of Oh! My Sunshine Night, Ongart Singlumpong, directed Romantic Blue as well as some other lakorns and is the executive director at Channel 8. He's a talented director it seems and he talked about wanting this story to reach a mass audience and be special (see video and translation here). They're taking their time with it which is good to see. The company may be new, but P'News has a lot of support and has done so many great things, along with P'Note, for Ohm and Fluke in the past already. I think in terms of budget things will be alright but I guess we'll have to wait and see if all the time and effort spent on the script pays off. We know the acting and chemistry will be fantastic at least so one less thing to worry about there. Hmm I've not heard much about the Tencent/WeTV series just have seen a few posts here and there on twitter (this is an edit in post but I realized you probably were talking about 609 Bedtime story oops). What I HAVE seen is everyone theorizing OhmFluke are also getting roles in Make a Wish and 609 Bedtime Story. This is very peculiar to me because that would mean they have 3 big projects lined up where they are the main lead/pairing which just sounds like a lot??? I love their dynamic of course but more popular acting partners like OffGun for example who have been working together for 5 years don't even have announcements like that so close after another. If it's true then great for us I guess but I'll wait for everything to be confirmed because I'm a bit skeptical.

The information we have on 609 Bedtime Story is much more strange however and it seems like that on IMDb Pro Ohm and Fluke are already listed in the cast (see screengrabs here). The listed director is also Tanwarin Sukkhapisit who directed Red Wine in the Dark Night (you know, the weird sexual vampire movie Fluke was in) sooooo I have no clue what's going on there. So yeah the only thing we can really be sure about is OMSN but it looks like they're involved in 609 Bedtime Story in some capacity??? I'm not sure how reliable IMDb Pro is to be honest.
