As much as he loved a dress code, formal events in the summer were cruel, at least to those who fancied suits. Gowns at least allowed for barely-there straps, or slits that allowed a breeze to brazenly graze bare legs in the way that his fingers itched to do, but Richard was being strangled by his bowtie and his jacket was suffocating. He needed air; even if the outside temperature was typical for June, at least there would be space to breathe. That had been the plan, before a pretty little someone passed by, and the inevitable eye-lock meant Richard was no longer watching where he was going, and he promptly knocked right into another figure. It was an uncharacteristically sloppy moment, and the person he'd been making eyes at gave a giggle and slipped inside, out of his line of vision. "Damn it," he murmured, before finally acknowledging the one who'd intruded on what could have been a moment. "Ah. Moody. I'd say it's a pleasure, but -" Richard adjusted the sleeves of his jacket as though the action would finish his thought for him. "Should I assume you're on the hunt, or are you actually here to enjoy yourself?"

Alex was still shaking. He’d been shaking since he was pronounced innocent and walked from the Wizengamot chamber, trying desperately to catch his husband’s eye but quite unable to. When he was directed toward the floo he had a moment of confusion; wait, where were they sending him to? His hearing wasn’t the best already and the courtroom had grown agitated enough that if one of the aurors escorting him had said, he didn’t catch it. 

And then he was being swallowed by green flame.

When Alex finally heard the door open, the wards reacting as they always did to alert him. He’d been sitting on the floor in the corner of he and Alastor’s bedroom- the floo had sent him straight home, miraculously- with Sugar’s head in his lap, desperately trying to control his breathing and believe that he was free.

“Alastor?” he called, rising at last and padding to the stairs. He was still in his musty professor’s robes, his hair lank with sweat, as he stood at the top of the stairs and glanced down.

Henry knew, distantly, that he was being more than a little dramatic with all-black on valentine’s day, and coming to a gala on the day of love when both halves of his heart were painfully absent. But he had money to spend on a good cause, and St. Mungo’s was where Emm and Nigel did their good work, and also this event was hosted by Malcolm Greengrass and honestly, fuck that guy, so Henry showed up like the good pureblood society son he was supposed to be. 

Except everywhere he looked, it felt like he could be seeing Death Eaters. The richest people in this room were old-faith blood supremicists, was it really so unrealistic to think that a few of them ran around beneath silver masks in their ample free time? 

He didn’t realize quite how fiercely he’d been holding his glass until a hand fell on his shoulder and tightened imperceptibly. He was about to snap but he glanced over and realized that Alastor Moody himself was hovering just over his shoulder. Henry let out a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding. 

“Can I help you, Auror Moody?” he grit out from between clenched teeth.

Henry had been getting ugly looks all morning, standing as he was just inside the Ministry’s visitor entrance, holding a giant sign that said CREATURE RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS in bold red text, spelled to look like blood. Even those who threw him sympathetic glances didn’t dare to talk to him in their place of work. 

After the first hour he gave up standing and sat on the edge of the fountain, still holding the sign, still fielding looks. He was honestly a little surprised that no-one had called security yet, but he supposed that he wasn’t technically breaking any rules. That, or he looked so dour that no-one really wanted to approach him. He was wearing all black, his heavy heeled boots giving him a few more inches of height, and he’d styled his silver hair into a fauxhawk. It was fairly obvious, even beneath the high-fashion trappings, even besides the sign, that he was of creature-blood. 

After another hour, the crowds began to part somewhat, and he saw a tall, intimidatingly-set figure in a dark cloak striding straight for him. He leapt to his feet, stepping up on the edge of the founding and leaning on the sign so that he was a few inches taller than the man, and scowled. 

“I’m not breaking any rules,” he said. “Unless our fascist government has decided to outlaw protest groups of one?”
