One Villainous Scene - “I’m Proud of You… My Son”

The Fire Emblem series has had many different archetypes and many different antagonists as well, but one of the most well received archetypes, for the antagonists, are the big bad emperors, otherwise known as “Rudolfs.” However if you truly want to understand what this archetype is comprised of, you’ll have to take a look at Emperor Rudolf himself, specifically in the Remake of Fire Emblem Gaiden, or as the new school fans know it as, Shadows of Valentia.

Emperor Rudolf is the emperor of the cold, and merciless Rigelian Empire. A man who is infamous for his cold exterior and great ambition, or at least that’s what he was built up as. We all hear his name during the first act and know that he’s basically conquering the land of Zofia, but when the player first sees him, it’s when Celica has a nightmare about the possibility of him killing Alm, and when we see him again, he’s with his nephew, Berkut, who had recently challenged The Deliverance for sport and lost, giving his nephew a chance to redeem himself. He rarely appears in the game, but when he does he certainly makes a statement, like when we finally see HOW he managed to take over Zofia by basically killing the Earth Mother, Mila with the Falchion. So yeah, he’s certainly made a name for himself so far. Then we get to Chapter 4: The Land of Sorrow.

The Deliverance has began to assult Rigel Castle, and Rudolf plans to confront them. Berkut goes up to his uncle to ask him why he hasn’t requested him to go on the front lines, basically begging Rudolf to give him another chance. However the old man just tells him to stay behind in the most asshole way he could say it, yet… you can tell something is different about Rudolf. You don’t exactly know what it is yet, but you can obviously tell that there’s something running through his head.

Once he enters the battlefield, he tells his men that should he be killed, that they should lay down their arms, and this just adds to feeling that something is up. Then you actually go ahead and fight him with Alm, and… he doesn’t attack. This is Emperor Rudolf, right? The Rigelian Emperor, right? The man who kicked Mila’s ass, right? One of the biggest villains in this game, RIGHT? Well… once Alm beats him, he drops this revealation.

“You’ve… done well… I’m proud of you… my son.”

This. Changes. Everything.

Rudolf, with his last few minutes of life, then explains some of the details to his son, including the fact that he entrusted him to his good friend, Mycen. He then informs Alm about that the God of Strength, Duma has indeed gone mad, and since Alm was indeed one of the children of prophecy that are meant to slay Duma, he basically begs Alm to finish the mad god off. Then when life leaves the emperor’s eyes, Alm lets out a gut-wrenching scream upon the realization of what had just transpired.

This one scene, this one fricken scene changes your perspective on Rudolf, while showcasing just how screwed up the situation is. This man basically hid his son away from Duma and his worshippers, turned himself into a tyrant, had a small hand in the many insecurities his nephew has, CONQUERED THE NATION HIS SON AND BEST FRIEND WERE HIDING IN, and well… just let his own son kill him, all so a hero could rise to slay Duma and give Valentia a brighter future. This wasn’t a well thought together master plan, this was a coin flip that required a lot of unnecessary suffering to land on the right side!

There is extra stuff in this game that expand upon this old windbag, but if you want a summary of Emperor Rudolf, especially SoV!Rudolf, watch this scene, and you’ll see a man with an endgoal that isn’t inherently bad, but said endgoal relyed on a gambit that required 15 different levels of mass suffering, including his own, to reach the good ending. That is what the Rudolf Archetype was built on, and Jesus Christ, it doesn’t matter if you love him, hate him, or love to hate him, I think we can all agree he’s pretty much caused a crapton of unnecessary suffering without trying that hard.

by that time, alm was still too young to understand or question your family situation and the two of you grew up as normal siblings

you were both friends with gray, tobin, kliff and faye, with alm always making sure you got along well with everyone! 

both of you befriended celica as well when she got to ram village, though alm tended to spend more time with her than you did

fast forward a few years and alm takes on the position of the leader of the deliverance, to keep you and his friends safe! 

meanwhile you're always by his side, supporting your older brother wherever you could! 

during your travels, the two of you met a lot of new people, yet you two stayed as close as you always did, always supporting each other, especially in battle! 

even when you two found out about your family in rigel – about berkut and rudolf – you were there for each other, to support and comfort each other

alm worried that after killing your father, you'd grow to despise him for it, but you still remained by his side, comforting him

neither of you knew about rudolf being your father until it was already too late

for a short moment, your small family of two suddenly doubled in size, with the two of you learning about your cousin and father

only for both of them having to die soon after, by your own hands…

now, alm and you were by yourself again and while that had always been that way and you never minded just having each other, you two had now lost all of your family, except each other

like there was an empty space in your life, that wasn't there before and that wouldn't go away ever again…

Priest of the North

Mycen takes the young Prince Alm, but he eventually gives the baby to Novis Island.

He can come back and train the boy to be a wairror, but he isn't a father figure.

(He doesn't get the chance to come back)

Alm grows up on the sea, saying prayers and beating back pirates. His strength is unmatched even by the mecenaries who come and pray to the Mother Mila.

Silque is assigned to follow and train and hold back the force that is Alm before he is ready to be loosed on the world.

She is, in all ways but blood, his big sister, but she does not hold him back.

As piracy becomes more normal around Novis, Alm takes more and more to the sea. As his skills in battle and the stern improve, he takes companions to fight against villains and protect those he loves and the innocent.

Alm is eventually sent on a quest to check on Mother Mila, his big sister Silque in tow along with the acolytes Mae, Boey, and Genny. Alm has never been particularly skilled with magic, but he can do basic healing and serves as the tank of the group.

Further south in the nation, a rebellion against a coup is growing stronger around a mysterious mage called Celica.

Alm goes on his quest against pirates, but notes the growing rumors of Zofia lost and regained and of growing Rigelian agression.

Alm readies himself to fight, and decides to go forth and meet the liberator of Zofia, Celica.

(He feels the call of trouble at the Temple of Mila)

(He is troubled by dreams of mad dragons and a dying Duma and Mila)

When Alm and Celica do meet in a palace Alm has never seen, it is as strangers. But they feel like they know each other.

Celica was raised and trained far to the south in little Ram Village, and her closest allies are her friends who followed her into the Deliverance. Alm knows he has never been there, but he recognizes the mark on her hand as a blessing of the gods.

He departs before either can figure each other out. Alm heads for Mila's temple to unroot that problem - but he is pursued by his unknown heritage, by the Rigelians who birthed and hid him.

Destiny comes for all in the end.

Throughout the span of their correlative lectures to follow, Albein 'Alm' Rudolf II looms as a mysterious presence chewed between his otherwise studious deliberations--known only by informative virtue of stories regaled by those with greater experience. Whether seated within handy range of the elbow or afar on the impersonal brink of his vision, no distance can deter the image that he is familiar in the ways that only neighboring rulers can be... Or perhaps there is more to be said upon the note.

FAVORITE    CANON    SHIP:    He only has one, and if it ain’t broke don’t fix it! Honestly, I really enjoy the fact that they’re comfortable enough with each other that Celica actually speaks her mind and lets herself not Be the stoic, calm and collected priestess. Alm’s always an open book on his end, but seems far more comfortable expressing skepticism openly rather than trying to play mediator when he doesn’t agree with things (that don’t blow his top). They’re also both fairly considerate about each other and the things they enjoy, and often keep each other in their thoughts — it’s sweet. FAVORITE    NON-CANON    SHIP:   Probably with Kliff, Tobin or Gray, honestly. A little fond of the Luthier one too, it’s sweet. I think it’s funny that outside of Celica herself, I don’t really see Alm bonding romantically with another girl except maybe Clair? Though with Clair, I frankly don’t think it’d end well, mostly with how much value Clair puts in presentation vs how little it matters to Alm — they’d drive each other nuts. Fun experiment, though,

OPINION    ON    TRUE    LOVE:  I feel he doesn’t think ‘you only love once’, but I do think he would in fact devote his entire emotional power into whatever relationship he got into. Not as much as to neglect his friendships, though... he does care about everyone he’s friends with a lot. OPINION    ON    LOVE    AT    FIRST    SIGHT:  Likely doesn’t believe it’s love if it’s on first sight. HOW    ROMANTIC    ARE    THEY?:  Romantic enough to work hard to make handmade gifts he knows they’d like because he remembers conversations from at least 7 years ago and likes making things meaningful. Not one to express love in an expensive way, but more of in a personal way — he’d make you dinner featuring only your favorite things if he learned enough about you to pull it off, and likely will.

Someone he can talk to for hours, joke around with (puns!), and who isn’t afraid to tell him when they think he’s in the wrong — even if sometimes it hurts to hear. They have to care about other people, especially the most vulnerable, and reject the idea that the status quo is all there could be. UNATTRACTIVE    PHYSICAL    TRAITS:  None come to mind UNATTRACTIVE    PERSONALITY    TRAITS: uncaring about the safety and wellbeing of others (especially the lower class), he’s got a bone to pick with snobby nobility, valuing wealth or objects over people, if you can ignore someone in need he’s not interested in you.

Some weeks ago, I commissioned the insanely talented @mirensiart to draw one of the few couples in fiction I'm sufficiently emotionally invested in and the result came out yesterday. Head canon: Alm gave Celica her earrings

What she says: I'm fine What she means: At the end of Act 4 in Shadows of Valentia, Rudolf tells Alm that his name is Albein Alm Rudolf. But that doesn't make any sense. If his first name is Albein, why isn't he CALLED Albein, instead of Alm? The game tells you that no one knew he existed, so there wasn't any problems with hiding his identity like how Celica is the "fake" name for Anthiese. So does that mean the naming system is backwards, and that Albein is more of a middle name and Alm is more of a first name?? But after the battle, I think I remember some of them referring to him as Albein, so that doesn't make any sense either. I guess Alm could work as a sort of nickname for Albein, but still. And don't get me STARTED on Rudolf. Is Rudolf the family name? If so, what was the emperor's actual name??? Was he Rudolf Rudolf???? And then people call Alm 'Rudolf II' which, once again, doesn't make sense. If Rudolf IS the family name, then are you trying to tell me this family legacy is only two people long? Also, I'm pretty sure that isn't how you go about talking with people and titles. Wait, but what if all of this stuff is wrong, and they're ALL first names? But why would someone need so many names, hot damn. Does Alm get even the slightest bit confused when these people use different names, like "Hey Albein." "??oh shit, that's me." Wouldn't the people of the castle be a little confused too? I have so many questions.
