1943: Albert Hofmann accidentally discovers the psychedelic properties of LSD. Hofmann, a Swiss chemist, was researching the synthesis of a lysergic acid compound, LSD-25, when he inadvertently absorbed a bit through his fingertips. Intrigued by the stimulating effects on his perception, Hofmann decided further exploration was warranted. Three days later he ingested 250 micrograms of LSD, embarking on the first full-fledged acid trip. In his autobiography, LSD, My Problem Child, Hofmann remembered his discovery this way: "I was forced to interrupt my work in the laboratory in the middle of the afternoon and proceed home, being affected by a remarkable restlessness, combined with a slight dizziness. At home I lay down and sank into a not unpleasant intoxicated-like condition, characterized by an extremely stimulated imagination. In a dreamlike state, with eyes closed (I found the daylight to be unpleasantly glaring), I perceived an uninterrupted stream of fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colors. After some two hours this condition faded away." The experience led Hofmann to begin experimenting with other hallucinogens, and he became an advocate of their use, in the arenas of both psychoanalysis and personal growth. He was critical of LSD’s casual use by the counterculture during the '60s. He referred to the drug as "medicine for the soul" and accused rank amateurs of hijacking it without understanding either its positive or negative effects. Hofmann was equally critical of what he considered society’s knee-jerk rejection of a drug that he believed is mostly beneficial and deserving of continued research. "I think that in human evolution it has never been as necessary to have this substance, LSD," he said at a symposium in 2006 marking the centennial of his birth. "It is just a tool to turn us into what we are supposed to be." Hofmann died of a heart attack at his home near Basel, Switzerland, in 2008. He was 102. Terence McKenna born Nov 16, 1946 and LSD first synthesized by Albert Hofmann on this day in 1938. So grateful 🙏💙 Terence Kemp McKenna (Paonia, November 16, 1946 - April 3, 2000) was an American writer, speaker, #philosopher, ethnobotanist, psychonaut, and art historian, who championed the responsible use of psychedelic plants. "One of the most prominent authorities in the ontological foundation of shamanism", and the "intellectual voice of rave culture."⁠ ⁠ McKenna formulated a hypothesis according to which the ingestion of the fungus #Psilocybecubensis was one of the main transformative factors and a catalyst in the initial evolution of consciousness in Homo sapiens.⁠ ⁠ He also formulated a concept about the nature of time-based on fractal models that he claimed to have discovered in the I Ching, which he called "novelty theory."⁠ ⁠ ______________ 78 years ago today, Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann took LSD for the first time and rode his bike home in Basel, Switzerland, dubbing April 19th as Bicycle Day. #LSD was first used medically, as an assistant in therapy and mental health. Since then it was embraced by the 60’s and 70’s counterculture, politicized and villainized, and more recently has seen new attention again for it’s positive effects. I’m a big believer in the power of controlled (and infrequent) psychedelic usage for therapeutic benefits, for peoples’ own spiritual journeys, and, let’s be honest, for an incredible time having fun and playing in nature.
