This is gonna be a long post of silly little fun facts so here's a readmore.

Merrin doesn't glow if the sun is up. It only glows with the moonlight. Althea's dreamjob is trophy wife. Her second dream job is adult toy tester. Calmet knows the name Alacard. They have no idea who he is. Mortal's phone home screen is a picture of Barbie sleeping. His lock screen is a close up of her eye that's so zoomed in it's unrecognizable as an eye but he knows what it is. Rimmer is an absolute disaster gay who's type is something he'll only admit to while under the influence. Vladir isn't attracted to Syhren's current body she's tied to. If a quad of Veketi's ever hurt him, Liegia would kill them at risk of her own life. However, if they hurt her while he wasn't around but they clearly make him happy? She'd hide that fact and take it to the grave. Liliac's favorite flower is actually dandelions. Angela regularly shows up to work in her husband's shirts and has to change because she realizes she got dressed tired and the oversized shirt is restricting her movement.

Helsin has almost broken his wrist by stimming a little too hard too long. Nerola has no confidence that anyone will stay with her- except for her moirail. If there ever was a day he'd leave her it would break her completely. She also will let anyone do anything to her in trying to make friends.

Koreki can track scents via tasting them. His tongue can expand to almost a foot long.

Bailey, despite working at a bar, is a lightweight.

Beatrx's vision is slightly blurred due to her unusual pupils.

Xennaa would regularly leave needles around by accident while she was working on projects and still wanted to be a seamstress, which left Trisin with no more than 4 foot scars.

Harvey is a vegetarian because he hates the taste of blood. He loves to pretend to be a vampyre.

Cutlas will wear anything but shapewear.

Airika regularly performs for small crowds of lowbloods for free. She dreams of starting a school of ballet for the less fortunate.

Esstoc likes to find quiet places to read books alone. Recently he found one that had a mutant girl sleeping- so he stayed until she woke up just to make sure she made it back safely.

Neyire's fashion sense has been the same since she was a wriggler.

Velosi will wear anything for the right price.

The Problem With Perfect is a fun read reminiscent of romcoms and what has previously been called 'chick lit' with a gay twist. At the heart of the message is a simple adage: it's always better to be yourself. 

While that message can feel tired, Stover did bring a fresh twist in the form of a critique on rainbow capitalism and how some members of the community can get caught up in the image-driven social-media powered world that can trap us in the 'right' way to be openly gay. 

Unfortunately, the novel does suffer in style largely from the voice of the narrator: Ethan. At times Ethan's narration takes some odd and stilted turns that can make it difficult for a reader to latch onto his character. And from a pacing point of view, it's intensely frustrating as a reader to watch it take so long for Ethan to finally snap and break away from the pressures of his oppressive television network bosses. I counted at least two opportunities where I felt the tension needing to break, but it didn't. Consequently, when the inevitable crash happens, it occurs in the space of a handful of pages right at the end. This is always a mistake from a reader's point of view because there isn't a sufficient denouement. Even in a fluffy romcom, we still want to see the characters work out their emotional beats with each other and feel like they have some real resolution for the internal crises as much as the external ones. 

Still, the deeper you get into the novel the more your heart opens up to Ethan--because you understand where he's coming from and why he can be so difficult--and you find yourself rooting for him and for the ever-endearing love interest, Beau. 

The blurb makes a dubious overstatement when it says that fans of Casey McQuiston and Alexis Hall will love it. However, I do recommend this book to readers looking for upbeat, fluffy reads all about learning how be brave enough to live your live honestly and authentically.

hey so I’m realizing from the questions coming into my inbox that some of you are both (1) very interested in Heretic and (2) have no idea what Heretic is.

Heretic is a homebrew tabletop RPG that I created during lockdown to play with my fiance. It takes inspiration from Alexis Kennedy’s very good game “Cultist Simulator” for a lot of its flavor. It’s designed for 1:1 play: you recruit a party of NPCs that you control in combat. It uses a d10 system like Godlike (where the goal is to roll pairs or three of a kind). I’ve also borrowed the discipline scaling system from VtM, & a number of stealth & influence systems from Blades in the Dark. There is also a stress system that takes inspiration from Trail of Cthulhu.

The combat system had to be pretty much totally homebrewed, as very few games are designed with 1:1 play in mind. It has a 3-2-1 combat system (meaning all combat resolves in 3 rounds and then the outcome is narrated based on the results) and combat for each character resolves with a single roll (meaning, one roll tells you if you hit, how much damage you dealt, if you get additional actions, & how effective your additional actions are). 

My fiance is a medievalist, and I’ve studied religion & divinity, & we’re both interested in (as an academic subject, not as a personal practice) historical occultism. So as a game setting Heretic is a lot weirder than anything I’d make for a wider audience. That’s the fun of making a game for one person you know really well. “Let’s go really, really deep on medieval eschatology” is not, like, a normal or desirable state for a Saturday night for most people. 

There are a lot of things about the mindset of playing Heretic that I don’t bother to explain because Emily would never need it explained to her that, for example, in the 1300s, an encounter with demonic power would nevertheless be understood as an encounter with the numinous, worthy of reverence and containing wisdom. Or that the medieval mind would not attempt to rationalize it or determine if what they experienced ‘really happened’ in the same way as we would post-Enlightenment or even post-Renaissance. What would matter is that it was experienced, and therefore contains truth. From the medieval point of view, our modern definitions of ‘truth’ and what is ‘real’ are shockingly limited and unimaginative. Playing Heretic means stepping into a more medieval state of mind. I would not ask that of players at any other table! But I can do that with Emily.

There are lots of other things about Heretic that show that it’s a game system made by one person, for one other specific person. It’s super gay, and fucks around a lot with gender. It has sex and violence and dark shit in it. Sometimes there’s a big twist based on knowing that Mary doesn’t appear in the Gospel of Mark. I’m not designing it so that you can play it without being made to feel confused or uncomfortable, I’m designing it so that Emily and I have the most fun possible on Saturday night.

I am sure there are other people out there who would really enjoy playing Heretic! And I think that’s great. I’m slowly putting together a source book for the handful of you out there who might want to try.

Angel Sanctuary re-read Volume 1

Okay, yesterday I finished up volume 1, so let's summarize.

The manga starts with these two demons (ogres to be precise) named Kurai and Arakune stealing the body of the angel Alexiel. However, it is only her body, her soul has been reborn in Assiah (Earth), so they move there to search for the human who houses it.

We then get introduced to our protagonist Setsuna beating up some guys while his best friend Kira just watches. However, once blood is flowing, he is getting super duper tired and can't fight anymore. The fight gets broken up when his sister Sara appears and gets mad at him.

We learn that their parents are divorced. Sara lives with her mom and Setsuna with their dad and they meet once a month.

However, Setsuna has a secret. Several to be precise, but he is only aware of one of them.

He is in mad and utter love with his own sister.

Sara brought her friend Ruri, but Setsuna is mean to her and she leaves. Meanwhile, Kurai and Arakune watch an angel (a really high ranking one) doing dubious stuff, giving computer games to teenagers. Ruri also gets one which kickstarts the plot.

Anyway, Ruri starts this game and what would be a really big red flag is her jsut going "Oh, that is completely normal" when the voice of an angel talks to her. Ruri gets a lot bolder with the encouragement of said "angel" and tries to get Sara to wingman her to get close to Setsuna.

In the meantime, Kurai and Arakune think that they found Alexiel in Setsuna (spoilers, they are right). Kurai attacks him with magic in an attempt to see if Setsuna has powers. Well, he has, but the magic attack destroys a window and Setsuna is only protecting Sara, meaning that Ruri gets badly hurt and loses her eyesight.

More time for Setsuna to angst about his attraction to his own sister while Kurai thinks he has found Alexiel and is overjoyed, but Setsuna isn't aware of anything and tells them to get lost. Well then…

Cut back to Ruri who is furious about losing her eye sight and blames Sara for it. Well, Sara goes to her and wants to talk to her, but then all shit breaks lose. Do you remember the angel that handed out the video games? He is called Katan and his plan was to get the life force of teenagers to revive his master.

Setsuna follows Sara to Ruri's place and goes into her room to talk with her, but during that time, Katan's plan already happened and the main villain of the series is introduced, Rosiel. Setsuna sees him, stutters his name, confused why he knows it and Rosiel does recognize Setsuna as Alexial right away, because they are twins. And oh boy, does he hate Alexiel because she sealed him away in the first place.

Poor Ruri is now super fucking dead and Rosiel takes on her appearance to deceive everyone, even Setsuna, who thinks what he saw might not have been real. Well, what happens next? Katan wants Rosiel to go back to heaven to help with the war, but Rosiel is super petty and egoistical and wants to kill Alexiel (Setsuna) first.

Also did I mention that Katan is like super gay for Rosiel?! Woah, that is some devotion!

There are no needs for computer games anymore, so Rosiel simply forces his cells into some rowdy and let them kidnap Sara, showing up there in the form of Ruri. Setsuna appears and then the teenager turns into a golem, nearly killing Setsuna.

Kurai and Arakune are watching, confused why Setsuna doesn't use his powers. Then, when Setsuna is almost done for, he summons an angel named Adam Kadamon who can use the magic of time and just heals Setsuna and drives the bullies and the monster off. Huh, yeah, that is the proof that is needed that Setsuna really is Alexiel, but he still can't remember anything.

Instead, the story shifts on him and Sara. She's unconscious and he brings her home and well… what is Setsuna doing? Going home and trying to forget about the attraction to his sister? Noooo, he is KISSING her while asleep and his mom sees that.

Of course she's upset and says all kinds of awful stuff to Setsuna. Sara has woken up in the meantime and hears it and then gets out and says that she actually reciprocates Setsuna's feelings!

Holy shit, both of the siblings have the hots for each other. Setsuna's mom begs him to say that he was just playing with Sara and in order to protect Sara, Setsuna decides to say vile things to her, the opposite of what he feels. We get treated to a scene where his feelings are spelled out in his thoughts while his words say nothing but painful things. And then he leaves, wallowing in self pity about that he fell in love with his sister, asking his best friend if he will get to hell now.

Well, we are almost done with the volume, so what happens next? Kurai's backstory. We learn that Kurai is not a boy, but a girl and her kingdom was destroyed by angels. It was Alexiel who taught her to fight and who helped her out. Kurai is idolizing Alexiel a lot. During this part we also learn that Alexial said that she would prefer to be reborn as a man.

Then we cut to Kira who confronts Kurai and Arakune, seeming to know more than he should know. Arakune kills him, but that isn't permament… the guy just comes back to life and we are left with the mystery of his existence for a future volume…

Meanwhile, the author is talking about how she always writes about "forbidden" love and thirsts for her own characters ("Corrupt me, Rosiel-sama")

Sidenote, the manga is from the 90ies, so some jokes aged very poorly, mostly the jokes around Arakune, Kurai's cousin. It is never clear if Arakune is a trans woman, a drag queen or a crossdresser, but it seems to be the first and well, there are quite a few slurs said to Arakune and at least my version normally use he/him pronouns.

The kid from the small town Nuvema Town, soon the Hero of Ideals, chosen by Zekrom, savior of Unova. At least, that's what the people think. While it is true that Alex did save Unova, he does not wear that honor with pride. The journey across Unova was plagued with the pressure of stopping an entire organization, having no choice but to, and being tormented by the death of his pokemon. And to end it all off, his arm was so damaged that it needed to be replaced, no thanks to that man’s Hydregion. So yes, he was a hero. He’s glad that he saved Unova, and managed to get through N to make him see past his own beliefs. By the end of it all he was so, so tired.

He was supposed to recover from literally losing an arm, but between hearing his sister would be leaving to train and heal from her own missing limb in Alola, to the constant images of the bodies that were his pokemon, he took the survivors, Zekrom and left Unova. He couldn’t be there anymore. He just couldn’t just be there, as tired as he was. Though, as it turns out, leaving Unova without telling anyone and with a missing arm, and lack of self-preservation left the kid in a poor state- so poor that Zekrom forced him to land. Conveniently, they landed in Lake Verity, which caught the attention of the Sinnoh Champion, Danica Yamamoto. With her help and others, he was able to properly recover, gaining a prosthetic arm. However, the trauma of what happened did not easily go away, chaining him down with nightmares and crippling self doubt.

Alexis stayed in Sinnoh for two years, occasionally learning about its history from its residents, before sensing something…off, back in Unova. He doesn’t know how he would sense such a thing, a feat that only Zekrom could feel. Nonetheless, the feeling was urgent, and as much as he still wishes to avoid his home, after not being in contact with them for so long, he wouldn’t shake the feeling away. So he went back to Unova, Zekrom as his guide to Giant Chasm where he was surprised to see some familiar faces and some unknown ones. Elliot, his sister. N, his….friend? He stayed and fought and soon he’s being yelled at by his sister, then by Cheren and soon he’s just enveloped into a giant hug by his friends and his family and-

The rest is a blur. Sometimes he felt something. Sometimes he didn’t. For a while, he and Cheren wouldn’t talk to each other. Bianca too, but they talked. He got a job at the daycare, two years after. He loves that. The nightmares don’t stop. He doesn’t sing anymore. At least he tries to.

The next thing he knows he’s on a plane trip to Galar, his sister talking to him about the sights, the music and this “gym challenge” or whatever. He hopes that she doesn’t plan on participating. This is supposed to be their vacation after all. Well, her vacation, Alexis was dragged along for the ride. At least they get to see their cousin, Naomi. That should be nice.

This is actually a bit embarassing but i dont know that much songs lmaoooo Like i only listen to the same songs on repeat until i get tired of them so imma just put the genre :p

El: Probably the latest thing she listened to was lo-fi. Or a Gay Yearning song tbh.

Drew: Usually only listens to instrumental songs since he generally listens to music while working on something. The latest thing he listened to was actually one of the songs from the Bridgerton soundtrack, but he'd rather be left in the sun then admit that.

Reagan: I can see them listening to pop or rock music! Something loud that they can jump and sing to. Also annoy their sister.

Klein: They are old as hell so i don't think they use spotify or youtube that much! If they were encouraged to use it (probably by Reagan) i feel like they would probably start with something like classical music and somehow end up listening and liking indie music.

Jackie: The last song they have listened to would probably be an older song, like maybe from the 90s or early 2000s. They generally prefer to listen to the radio then using a music app like spotify.

Alexis: Definitely listens to Pop! Anything with a beat thats energetic and dancable.

the thing about rachel is that dan explicitly wrote her with the intention that she’s not a crazy ex-girlfriend because he said that’s a tired trope that vilifies women and needs to be retired.

she’s not crazy and she’s not manipulative because she explicitly wasn’t written that way. would you call alexis manipulative for telling ted she loves him while he was still dating heather? i wouldn’t but it could be perceived as more manipulative than anything rachel did.

alexis knew that ted was in a serious relationship and she told him how she felt regardless. whether she knew that that would make ted feel conflicted is irrelevant because the point is she knew ted was with heather.

rachel didn’t know patrick was seeing anyone because like your another anon said patrick didn’t say anything to her. he was with this woman since they were literal children, had asked her to marry him, then just disappeared and didn’t say a word to her for six months. in the grand scheme of things patrick is much more of the bad guy than rachel would ever be. but people put the blame on her because they put patrick on a pedestal so it must be the woman’s fault.

i also don’t believe that rachel ever dated anyone else because she said that she was always the one pushing to get back together but that’s another conversation

I'm getting tired, but

I know she's not the crazy ex. I know Dan didn't write her to be that. I don't think she was intentionally manipulative to get her claws in him. I don't think she was following him around and trying to leap at he next chance.

I do think that she was broken up with by her long-term on-again-off-again fiancé, spent six months trying to get his attention, then went to his new town in hopes of a "big romantic gesture" (her words). Which wasn't a good idea, for anyone. She didn't know Patrick was in a relationship. She didn't know he'd moved on. She didn't know he is gay. Because Patrick dropped the ball and tried to cut ties completely without any explanation. He didn't do good by Rachel or David in this situation. As someone on Instagram put it, he's not the take-charge guy he thinks he is. He should have been honest with David. He should have been upfront with Rachel. He wasn't.

Sometimes Rachel's written as Patrick's best friend forever post-Barbecue. Sometimes she's homophobic (yes, my other fic thay literally no one has said anything about). Sometimes she's unhinged and he gets a restraining order. Sometimes she's upset but understanding and they go their separate ways. The truth is that Rachel has about 7 minutes of air time and is literally never seen or heard from again. Ruth has even less and there's a whole ship about her and Stevie. Rachel is a fictional character with very little canon backstory. And the point of fan fiction is to explore new scenarios that we weren't given. And this is how I chose to explore her character for a small one-shot for my friend for her birthday.

I wrote Johnny and Stevie having sex. No one came for me. I wrote Rachel as horribly homophobic. No one had come for me (yet). Honestly not sure why this particular fic has created a multi-platform conversation but here we are. I'm not changing my opinion any time soon, and neither are you. These conversations are important and everything but... can we let it rest please?
