Ritual to Eir —

Asking for help with a health problem

This ritual is to be performed when you're struggling with a health problem or an injury. It's designed to require very few supplies, but it's possible to build around it and adapt it to one's specific needs.

You will need:

A drink to offer Her. I suggest alcohol or tea, but anything will do, as long as it's offered with intent. In my experience, herbal teas seem to be Her favorites.

A glass to offer the drink in, and one for yourself to drink from.

A piece of wood on which to carve your rune work. It must be light and small enough to carry around, in case you want to use it as an amulet.

A carving tool you can confidently use (pens or pocket knives do the work perfectly)

A bowl of saltwater. Ideally, water drawn from a body of water, but it's also possible to simply add salt to water from home.

Optional but a great idea: Candles and incense to light during the ritual. Cedar, chamomile, lemon balm and sage are the herbs that I associate with her most, so I generally pick the incense in accordance.

As an aside, instead of rune carving, you can write the runes onto your skin using a green or black pen. It's a method I love to use at a pinch!

How to proceed

1. Start by by pouring the drink for Eir, reciting:

"I offer this drink to mighty Eir, who sits with the helpers of gold-adorned Frigg, that She may hear my call and drive away ailments."

2. Pour a drink for yourself and make a toast, declaring out loud that you're drinking in Eir's honor:

"Kindly maiden, share this drink with me."

3. Carve the runes Sowilo, Algiz, and Uruz onto the piece of wood (alternatively, write them onto the inside of your left arm using a pen). The first, to call upon the bright and powerful energy of the sun, the second, to ask for protection, and the third, to strengthen body and mind.

4. Gently anoint the runes using saltwater, saying "Eir vígi" (Eir bless). Recite the following in order to formally ask for help:

"Bless and consecrate these runes in the name of Menglöð, divine mistress of the magical arts, of spellcraft, and of Wyrd-weaving songs. By your hand, place upon my body the protection of Lyfjaberg, that I might find my condition to improve and my thoughts to clear. High is your seat among the healers of this world, and sacred among the Ásynjur your word. Your help extend and your blessings grant for those who suffer. Eir, I ask for your help."

5. Optional: sit in Her presence while finishing your drink, and explain the sickness, afflication, or pain you're suffering from. That way, you're letting Her know exactly what you want help with and why. If you want to make other offerings, now is the right time to do so.

Take the time to center yourself, meditating or journaling could be beneficial, and assess what changes need to occur in your internal and external world in order to move forward. Listen to your intuition, not the unrealistic expectations of others - what serves others may not serve you. The Universe is supporting you and giving you the green light to pursue this opportunity for a prosperous new beginning. Believe in your inner strength and wisdom to overcome any obstacles/conflicts to manifest your goals; trust that you have the capacity to achieve your true desires. Be calm and tactful, but always assert your boundaries with others that try to steer you into an unwanted direction.

How do you understand that sign is a sing from Deity? I have troubled times with meditation and noticing signs, because of unfortunate having of autism and immersive daydreamings, and because of that I hardly understand anything, thinking that was just my own imagination and become really sad about it. What do you do for understanding signs and what would you recommend for someone like me?

I was actually just talking about this with some friends, and I'll say to you some of what I said them. I use "sign" specifically to mean a thing I see in the real life meatspace world that I take to be a communication from an incorporeal entity. An appearance of a certain animal, either live or in art, finding certain symbols or patterns out in the world, stuff like that. For instance for a while I kept seeing the rune Algiz in random places - to me that is a sign. I only accept those as true signs if they occur at least 3 times, or I asked for it specifically - ex. "If you want me to do this ritual send me this specific sign" and even then I tend to want the sign multiple times. Because we have no control over the meatspace world I want to see a pattern that can't be a coincidence. And then I verify with divination. For meditative/dream/Otherworldly journeying type encounters I'm actually operate on kind of the opposite mind set. I hate to quote Harry Potter, but there is one quote that really stuck with me from it “Of course it's happening inside your head, Harry. Why should that mean that it's not real?” I assume pretty much everything that happens in those sorts of trance states is real until I have a reason to believe otherwise. Sometime I know right away, because an entity is just not acting like themselves and I can write a dream off as just a dream. But otherwise I trust but verify, take the experience at face value, but think critically about it, and then verify with divination. And even if something does turn out to just be a dream or a daydream, that doesn't mean it's worthless. If you confirm with divination that an experience you had wasn't direct contact with an entity, think critically about the experience: What did it make you feel? What did it make you think? Did you learn some from it, or because of it? Chances are it still had value. Sometimes we do make stuff up, sometimes we do imagine things, and that can be just a meaningful as the stuff we don’t. We just need to be careful that we aren’t making up EVERYTHING and doing so in a way that only gives us what we want.

a brief study on håkan’s tattoos and physique. his body art was designed by himself and applied on him ever since he received his title as the official chieftain/jarl of berk and the northern islands. all of his markings represent his connection to either his tribe, family or dragons.

håkan has various tattoos across his body. on his chest’s pecs, there are two blackened wings: they represent toothless. above them, right in the middle of his collarbones, lies a combination of the algiz rune with an eye, his chiefdom marking. on his left forearm are traditional drawings of scandinavian art, representing his connection to his tribe and the northern lands. it describes his alliance; his sword and shield will always belong to berk. meanwhile, on his right arm and shoulder, it’s a drawing of a viking holding an axe and braving through the seas—an homage to his father. below it, around his wrist, is a blackened mark. it signifies a killing, avenging hand: a trophy and a warning for drago bludvist’s death, conquered by his own hand. his back also has a tattoo: a circle of runes and a prayer to the gods for protection, peace and strength.

a note-worthy detail is that his tribe and jarl markings brand him as a smith-chieftain. his father also had brandings over his body, though his were of a warrior-chieftain. in medieval societies, it was usual for chiefs to be either warriors, hunters or smiths; however, smith-chieftains were extremely rare.

if he marries someone in his canon verses, he’ll most likely design a complementary tattoo on his left arm to mark the union. this is to further represent his loyalty and dedication to not only the person he marries but also to their tribe/kingdom/land.

rough, calloused hands: though his touch is soft and warm, described as welcoming by many, it can feel highly textured. his palms do not feel like those of a jarl or hersir. dragons seem to love that, though.

håkan has chronic pain in his leg, specifically in his stump. when it gets too bad, he sometimes needs to sit or lie down to massage the region. toothless is capable of identifying when he’s hurting more than usual. he doesn’t like other people knowing about that, even if the closest people (the riders, gobber, etc.) can tell he walks “a bit strange”, almost limping sometimes.

he has fading scars across his body, mainly on his back and chest. some of them were caused by other people’s swords (be them friend or foe, from sparring duels to serious quarrels), while others were injured by wild dragons, claws or small bites. a few of those scratches were thanks to his misadventures across lands or doing forge work. he doesn’t seem to care about them. gothi, the village healer, has grown used to his frequent visits. surprisingly, she does not see him to treat occasional illnesses: he doesn’t seem to get easily sick anymore—his immune system has sky-rocketed in quality compared to when he was just a tiny lad.

hersirs from other lands that met him when he was younger may not recognise him nowadays, as he has changed so much, and not only in boldness. though he was very scrawny and short in his early teenage years—a “toothpick”, as gobber well-summarised him—his work as a dragon rider and a villager’s smith-chief made him develop toned muscles. his hair got messier and longer, too. his height is around 160+/185+ cm (verse dependent).

most of his strength is centred around his core (abs, chest, and shoulders), which grants him incredible balance despite having lost one of his legs. because he is used to riding dragons most of the time, he is not used to running for prolonged periods. cardio can be a real issue for him, and he sweats a lot afterwards.

he is quite hairy on some parts of his body. during his twenties, he tries to at least shave his beard at somewhat regular intervals, thinking it doesn’t suit him. sometimes, he will forget about it, generally when he’s focused on one of his forge projects and gets cooped up/isolated for a week or two. after that, he’ll ask either fishlegs or eret to help him shave. by his late twenties-early thirties, he lets his beard and hair grow a tad more than usual.

For the 'weirdly specific artistic ask game': 15, 20, 28, 27 & 1!

1. Art programs you have but don't use Used to be ArtRage (a very intuitive program where I first learned to draw with a tablet, but lacking some useful features). In January my computer crashed and now all I have is all that I use.

15. *Where* do you draw (don't drop your ip address this just means do you doodle at a park or smth) Mostly stuck in my room, obviously, but I draw at every event/lecture, in cafes, and sometimes get out of the city for a pleinair trip.

20. Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy Ornaments, animals, meaty insides. I rarely get the chance though, because my work projects are all pretty safe and repetitive.

27. Do you warm up before getting to the good stuff? If so, what is it you draw to warm up with I know some artists literally go through series of doodles before starting work, but I never have the patience. I scribble a thumbnail of a future work to figure out the composition and count it as a warm up. When working on something, I usually leave the important pieces (faces/accents) for the middle, starting of general shapes or repetitive things (folds, trees, background etc)

28. Any art events you have participated in the past (like zines) Quite a few but I haven’t had the energy of faith in myself in last years. I’ve completed “1 page 1 day”marathon twice, and participated in ~7 zines when invited, but none being big projects. Also some random exhibitions of which I have no certification to show for.

A Bouquet of New Beginnings: Chapter 5 "Lily of the Valley"

The first day of classes at Hogwarts - Charms, Defence Against the Dark Arts, and a bit of Runes. All before going off to Hogsmeade.

Artemis was the sort to rise on her own accord at what some referred to as an unholy hour of five in the morning. This morning, despite the unusual length of the potion-induced slumber, was no different. She spent the next few hours, in the name of calming her nerves, double-checking everything she had.

Artemis was, as Professor Fig aptly put, the prepared sort.

As Professor Weasley had stated, a cross-body school bag appeared by her bedside, filled with notebooks, quills, inkpots and pencils. All of her needed textbooks were stacked in a precariously balanced tower, and a single pewter cauldron teetered on top like an academic Christmas tree. Clad in the Hogwarts uniform with the top button undone, her hair in the milkmaid braid and filled with the armada of white hairpins, and the soft scent of kinmokusei, she unveiled the legside bag’s contents.

Her Potions and Healer’s kits contained every potion, container and ingredient she’d packed up sans those that she’d used. The Wound-Cleansing Potion was mostly still full, the Wiggenpaste hardly used, but she’d need to brew another Calming Draught. A good excuse to buy some decent crocodile heart. Nocturne batted at the offensive purple potion.

The pin-striped pyjamas she’d worn lay upon the bed. Past her apparently had the foresight to include a spare uniform; she gave herself a mental pat on the back. Her grimoire, a tin of kinmokusei solid perfume, her small Japanese dictionary (kanji could be such a headache), the gifts from the Price family, and finally something she didn’t pack.

A set of new, obsidian balanced throwing knives. She flipped the blade, and saw the etched enchantment runes that gleamed bronze at her touch: Pertho & Algiz. Artemis smiled – how fitting. Carefully, she tucked away everything back aside from the spoon. She held the trinket gently in her left palm, her Glamoured scar also now hidden under light wood and whittled buttercup. Like a little piece of her childhood friend was there, in his own way.

The thought alone was enough for her heart to calm enough to start on the small breakfast of toast, apples, and chai. Nocturne devoured a plate of fish next to her as her mind went back to yesterday.

Professor Fig must be grieving for his friend, thought Artemis as she took another sip. Perhaps she’d stop by during lunch to deliver a bouquet, it was the least she could do. The spoon was tucked away into her legside bag then, her robes left folded for now.

“Orchideous.”

Chrysanthemum, marigold, lily of the valley, cypress, mint.

Oranges, yellow, white and bits of herby green.

Nocturne sniffed at the bouquet curiously.

“You can’t eat these, darling,” warned Artemis softly as she held the bouquet in her hand. Her wand hand went to pet Nocturne’s head.

“I believe black velvet would bind that well, Miss Loreley.”

Hello my fellow heathens! Here are the most prominent, so-called "nordic" symbols that are used by hate groups and which you might see appear in norse-pagan art/sources!

Steer clear of these:

The "black sun" and the newest far-right version of Othala (with its ends curling upwards) are two symbols which have nothing to do with nordic mythology, despite the claims of far-right groups. Still, these types of groups co-opting norse symbolism is unfortunately not new. The Valknut, Yggdrasil, Vegvísir, the hammer of Thórr, the Ægishjálmur, the Skaldenmet, and the wolf Fenrir, as well as the runes Othala, Jera, Sowulo, Algiz and Tiwaz are all symbols which have been co-opted from norse mythology at some point in time by such groups. They are often modified or camouflaged so as to hide in plain sight. It's sad to say, but these symbols (apart from the black sun, which has little to do with the nordic faiths anymore) are indeed tied to the nordic pagan path, and can therefore be hard to avoid. Especially when it comes to feeling connected to one's faith. That's why it's still possible to use them, as long as we stay mindful of exactly how they are used by far-right groups. For example, it's possible for us to acquire Mjöllnir pendants that have non-violent designs, as this symbol is often heavily stylized by hate groups.

i'm begging new pagans of any kind to do actual research on the connotations of the terms & symbols you want to use before you go out and start publicly identifying with them. because unfortunately racism & white supremacy are real, serious problems around pagan communities, and bigots have incorrectly claimed and appropriated traditionally pagan (or adjacent) language and symbology. as a result, a lot of pagan terms & symbols that seem innocuous have harmful meanings and connotations that you may not be immediately aware of. you really need to get educated on this stuff or else you could end up using a word or symbol in your practice that will associate you with harmful groups that you probably don't want anything to do with, while alienating you from regular well-meaning pagans and minority groups that have been harmed by the bigots who tout those symbols. please be conscious of this!
