19th Lexember - Borlish
euxon "quartz"
euxon /aukˈsɔn/ [ɐukˈsɔn]
quartz, an abundant mineral made of crystalline or amorphous silicon dioxide;
jargon, technobabble, scientific words or concepts that do not (or appear to not) make any sense
Etymology: compare Scholastic Latin euxō "quartz" and Malchassian Greek εὔξώνας • euxṓnas "quartz", both first attested in the tweflth century. Traditionally connected to early Ancient Greek ἐΰξοος • eúxoos "well-polished" and the verb ξύω • xúō "scrape, polish", though this theory has some diachronic and semantic issues. The adjective is attested in Epic literature but no later, and moreover the root pertains very specifically to wood (being related to ξόανον • xóanon "wooden image" and ξύλα • xúla "timber").
More recently it has been suggested that the word was borrowed into Latin (and then Greek) from a vernacular. Multiple early attestations have led scholars to propose that the word might have come from Borlish itself. If so, the most accepted theory is that the word is originally from attested Old English eolh-sond "amber", literally "elk-sand".
The latter sense is seen mostly in the idiom l'oc m'es euxon (literally "this is quartz to me"), used to express unfamiliarity with a technical field.
Y clocq parey l'hour con un scard d'euxon. /i klɔk paˈri lur kɔn ɪn xard daukˈsɔn/ [i klɔk pɐˈʀi lʊː kɔn ɪŋ xɐːd dɐukˈsɔn] df clock match df=time with indf shard of=quartz The clock keeps time with a piece of quartz.

The Whale
Prologue
The gods have been dead for years. Like an army with no commander, the mortal realm carries on without their guidance. The tides had to teach themselves to dance, the winds to sing, the ground to quake. Some hold faith that the gods will return someday. They go about their usual lives with the belief that their god will make everything all right again. But most have abandoned hope. The gods are dead and they are going to stay that way. At least, most of them, anyway.
Cozily nestled a few miles from the north coast of the nation of Haera is the village of Caes Eolh. For the past eight years, the elves of the village have taken a collective effort and care for a strange little boy with ears round as they come. His mother was a beloved half-elven woman who lived in a quaint little house just outside of town, all on her own. So, when the woman fell pregnant, it was quite a wonder to everyone in the village. Halfers—as are called those born from parents of different races—are incapable of bearing children, and no man in the village took claim of the boy. The woman, Talya Barwick, was granted unbridled support from the people of Caes Eolh throughout her pregnancy and gave birth to a precious baby of little resemblance to his mother. Talya sported brown hair and even browner eyes, meanwhile her son’s hair was as black as night and eyes an alluring emerald, which seemed to glow against his tawny brown skin. Even then, Talya would not reveal who his father was, and no strange men ever appeared on the healing house’s doorstep looking for a son.
After a week of recovery, the villagers sent Talya back to her home with her son in one arm, a basket of generous provisions in the other. She went to sleep that night cuddled up to her infant son in her bed.
The next morning, a few elves led by the elder of the village, Aeldrich, traveled to her home to check on her. When they reached her doorstep, the door creaked open with the gentlest of pushes, revealing inside a sight of horror. Sprawled across the bed was the body of Talya Barwick, drenched in her own blood. On the floor sat the boy, propped up against the comforting back of a forest sage, holy creatures who inhabit the sacred woods just south of Caes Eolh. A few more paced the small home, sniffing their surrounds.
Much speculation made its way around the village as to exactly what happened, but they all agreed that the forest sages were the boy’s saviors, rescuing him from his mother’s fate. Why these creatures, who scarcely show their faces to anyone, performed such a noble deed for the baby remained unknown, but some saw it as a sign of the Mother’s divine guidance persevering, sending her earthly heralds to save the boy.
Whatever the story truly was, Elder Aeldrich and his people decided to raise the boy, and there he has remained, his tale still untold and uncertain.
To the south of Caes Eolh is a vast forest, the most holy and sacred to the elves of Haera. It is said to be the first life that Mother Tarea ever built and the birthplace of the very first elves. It is a destination for monks and priests, a place of prayer, of gathering. When all else is uncertain in the world, these woods are where the elves will turn to. They are named the Whispering Woods, or in the elven tongue, Runung Weald.
A clearing sits at the center of the Whispering Woods, a perfect sunbathing spot for any forest sage who may find themselves in desire of a lounge. As the sun journeys up through the eastern trees and creeps over the foliage, the antlered foxes assume their usual spots on hot rocks or cool patches of dirt. The last whispers of winter are fading from the grass and summer grows near.
At the edge of the woods, a rascal little boy is sneaking away from breakfast. He wears nothing but a shirt and trousers that are far too big underneath his mother’s cloak, and Elder Aeldrich would make such a fuss over his lack of shoes. But the grass felt so sweet and warm under his feet, he couldn’t possibly separate himself from the earth with something so trivial as shoes. If he must wash his feet when he returns, then so be it, but for right now, all he cared about was the feel of chilled, post-winter soil between his toes.
The hardest part is the thick barrier of spindly bushes and small pines that line the perimeter, but once you can make it through that—and shake the leaves off of you—you find yourself in a perfect cage, barring you from civilization. All that surrounds you is pure life exactly as it was meant. Exactly as the Mother designed.
Deeper into the forest the brush grows deeper and greener, livelier. The branches and early summer flowers greet the boy, welcoming him home. His canter breaks into a sprint as he jumps and springs over rogue roots and a rock or two, his feet dancing with vines as they pound into the damp earth. If he landed on a pebble or twig, it bothered him none. Soon, he could see ahead of him the bright yellows of the sun beaming down on his favorite spot, beckoning him and bidding him good morning. Lying around, waiting for him, are his buddies. A tiny pup with antlers only as big as the boy’s hands waddles up to him, her tail wagging at the speed of sound. He peddles himself down from his jog and stops before the pup, crouching down to greet her with a smile strung to each of his round ears.
It takes him no time at all to settle in next to the forest sages, propping himself up against a hefty boulder which has spent the last while baking in the sun, giving him a perfectly warm spot to relax against. His belly full of gravied chicken breast and jam rolls, he leaned back and shut his eyes, letting his face cook under summer’s infancy.
He wasn’t sure when he’d fallen asleep, but when he woke up, his face was noticeably colder, the sun having travelled quite a ways in his slumber. It now hung just behind his head, heating his pitch-black hair messily pulled back with a few tiny braids poking out at the seams, courtesy of his friend Barclay. Any time they could get their little hands on the boy, it was to pull at and braid his hair. He never minded. Sometimes he thinks he rather fancies them.
The forest sages were on high alert, the boy quickly noticed. Their huge ears were perked and attentive, all of them seeming to focus in the same direction. They must have heard something the boy’s mortal ears could not pick up. He couldn’t see anything that way, though. How strange.
Almost perfectly in sync, as if connected by a hive mind, the sages all sprang up from their cozy spots and darted off in the opposite direction, their tiny paws silently carrying them to the safe cover of the thick foliage. Danger. He was clever enough to know that. The boy followed them, though with less grace, and slid between a few bushes to watch the clearing from behind a thick ginkgo.
Opposite him, a figure could now be seen emerging from the brush, swallowed by a brown cloak and hood. Their face entirely obscured, they stopped in the middle of the clearing looking around, as if waiting for something to happen. In anticipation, the boy leaned closer, resting his hands on the tree behind which he hid. As his hands seemed to warm against the bark, the figure turned straight toward him. They slinked toward the tree, something illuminating their front in a low yet alluring shade of green. The boy felt the allure as well, something within him pulling him to the source on the other side of the tree. Before his minimal wisdom could pull him back from leaving his hiding spot, he stood upright and now stood face-to-face with the hooded figure, their attention now on him, clutched tight in their hand a hatchet.
Finally realizing what he was doing, the boy stopped himself, tearing his hand from the ginkgo’s trunk and staring into the obscured nose and lips under the hood’s shadow. The light illuminating them vanished suddenly, retaking their attention. A second, nimble hand emerged from the cloak and pulled back the hood. Underneath, no longer engulfed in shadow, was a young girl. Older than the boy, no older than 13 or 14, but still far too young to engage in dubious business in the Whispering Woods.
She returned to the boy. “Who are you? What did you do to the tree?”
“I didn’t do anything!” The boy retorted, almost offended that this stranger would dare ask him who he was. Disregarding her first question, he looked at the tree and replaced his hand onto the bark. The strange warmth returned to his hand and a thrumming arose in his chest, almost like a thick string which tied him to the tree and was growing taught, begging him to come closer. He shifted around the trunk of the tree to where a great knot had opened up, the green light returning. Within the knot, just barely visible past the bright light, was a small, wooden figure of what appeared to be a whale. As he and the girl stared in amazement, the ground beneath them began to stir and quake. The boy looked around him to see the very grass rise out of the ground, dirt and rock cascading down a long, winding shape that emerged from the very earth. With a deep and menacing hiss resonating in the air, from no definite source, the boy was met by the murderous glare of a giant, 30-foot-long serpent. If looks could kill, right?
He was so captivated in his terror by the stare of two huge, black slits through seas of yellow that he didn’t notice the girl jam her hand into the opening of the tree and pull the wooden figure out. The snake, however, did notice, and if it looked angry before, it was the very embodiment of fury now. Its face recoiled and its jaw unhinged to a gaping maw guarded by two pearly white fangs as long as the boy’s arm. The girl properly saw now the danger she was in. That they were both in, it seemed. Before the serpent could lunge at them with a skull crushing snap of its jaw, she grabbed the boy by his wrist and took off, dragging him behind her with the figure clutched to her chest, the hatchet long forgotten and somewhere on the forest floor.
“Wait!” The boy tried to reason, but there was no getting to her. She was not about to be swallowed whole by a snake 10 times her size. What a shit way to die.
Her shitty death wasn’t completely off the table yet, though. The serpent was in quick and determined pursuit, indicated by a horrifying hiss that seemed to grow closer and louder with every desperate step they pounded into the dirt, only to be smoothed over by the sleek, lime belly of the serpent. When the boy finally dared to look behind them, the forest was shifting. The snake wasn’t as close as he’d imagined, its path interrupted over and over by trees—he had to be hallucinating—moving in the way of the snake. As though the forest wanted them to get away. The beast would not relent, however, predicting the shifting of the trees and moving to dodge them, gaining on the kids once again. To combat this, the very ground started to roll and wave at the serpent, attempting to slow it down even further. He could now see the edge of the forest ahead. How long had they been running? The ground became more erratic and out of control, desperately trying to keep the snake away from the two children who ran from its pursuit. The earth under each step seemed to come up to meet them to the point where they struggled to maintain their balance and it took an extreme amount of focus to keep from falling forward, only to be eaten by a giant, angry snake. They grew closer and closer to the edge of the forest, the afternoon sunlight filling their eyes with a sliver of hope. The ground gave one final lurch, higher than ever this time, launching them both into the air and flying above the barrier of pines and bushes, face first into the field on the other side, with no snakes after them.

Elch (German), elg (Norwegian/Danish), älg (Swedish), Middle English elk, Old English eolc, eolh, Proto-Germanic *elhaz, *algiz
All refer to Alces alces (US moose). I gather the native Dutch word is eland (wild to me as I think of eland as an antelope... maybe that happened due to Dutch colonies in Africa?).
"Moose" as a word is from a North American Algonquian language, "probably Narragansett moos or Abenaki moz". The wapti, Cervus canadensis, got called "elk" by English settlers because "eh, large deer-like thing, close enough" (and Alces alces had been wiped out in the British Isles long before that), and I guess they didn't know at first that Alces alces also lived in NA (they only lived at high latitudes, Cervus canadensis lived all over NA originally) . When they found Alces alces there, I guess they either were so used to calling Cervus canadensis "elk" and/or had totally forgotten that "elk" in Europe referred to Alces alces, that they needed a new name, and they went with a local name. If the early major European colonies in NA had been from Scandinavia, things would have been different I imagine.
It may be that in English in Europe, the American media influence has made significant progress in pushing the NA meanings of the words. Pretty sure in the places where Alces alces actually live in Europe they are still using the traditional words when speaking their language.
I'm being told moose are a type of elk? That doesn't seem right, they look totally different

#protection #magicprotection #rune #norserune #futhark #futharkrunes #runictattoo #norsemagic #runemagic #runictattoo #tattoo #eolh #algiz #yr #wristtattoo #amulet #talisman #carnelianbowl #thorshammer #icon #russianicon #Умягчениезлыхсердец #Семистрельная #grigri #witch #witchcraft #pagan #paganism #esoterism #occult https://www.instagram.com/p/CBG55ABiXNW/?igshid=1vsfw2r8vn592

Elhaz symbolizes protection in every form. Its shape resembles a lightning rod, drawing the life force down into the ground, or drawing the power of the Gods into everyday life. This is a powerful rune, bestowing protection from enemies, increasing friendship and success in general

I guess I conjured a rune today
I ordered this beautiful set of runes on moonstone about a year ago, and one of the things that upset me (and part of the reason I haven’t touched them until a few days ago) was that it was missing Eolh/algiz. And I remember this specifically because one of its meanings is divinity/communication with the gods/protection and I laughed to myself cause I thought it was a sign that I was missing god in my life.
I put them away, and they’ve been charging by my salt lamp for, again, about a year. A few days ago they were calling out to me so I started carrying them around with me. Then I started researching them again, learning their meanings, writing down information about them in my book of shadows. Again, eolh was missing. I tied them up in my little baggy and put them in my backpack and traveled around with them for a few days. Today I was cleaning out my backpack because I was taking it on a nature walk with me and wanted it to be as light as possible, and at the very bottom. Do you know what I saw. fucking eolh
I swear on everything I believe in I under no circumstances had that rune with me. It just fucking appeared out of no where. I don’t exactly know what to make of it except I guess the gods are with me now.
