Hi,

I know Dr. Joanne Paul's book on Thomas More was just released and was wondering if you could answer a question for me about Alice More. She seems to have a bad reputation in pop culture history, and I'm not sure why. Is it true Thomas didn't love her? I've heard some people claim that she wasn't well-educated and that he made fun of her for this reason. I hope that's not true. Did they have a caring relationship? Or did he love his first wife more? Thank-you!

I think for the same reason Anne Hathaway has had a bad reputation. Fans of the Great Man get angry with the wife for being a domestic obstacle, for getting in the way of the Great Man and his Destiny. (Never mind that she is a person too with a destiny). Alice wanted More to swear the oath and salvage his career and I think the fact she didn't meekly let him die has generated a lot of anger from More’s admirers.

And she doesn’t fare better at the hands of More’s detractors, she’s often vilified by association. If More is great, she can’t be great, but if More is terrible, then she’s terrible too. She really can’t win. And More’s first wife Joan/Joanna/Jane isn’t treated any better- I know, contain your surprise- she’s either ignored or dismissed as a naïve doormat, an inexperienced country bumpkin, a passive sex object, not a person with a sexuality or a worldview of her own. She’s punished for having too little personality, Alice is punished for having too much.

Who was More’s favourite wife? Interestingly, More himself gives us an answer to that question. More intended to share a tomb with both of his wives (obviously events got in the way of that plan). He wrote an epitaph for the three of them, where he said he couldn’t decide which wife he preferred: the one who bore his children or the one who raised them.

He also said he would be very happy with them in Heaven because you’re not allowed two wives on earth.

Make of that what you will.

I think it’s telling that Alice chose to be buried with More and not her first husband (the father of her children). The fact they married so soon after More was widowed raised a lot of eyebrows, and More’s detractors latched on to it as proof that More was insatiable and sex-obsessed. But More and Alice had no children together, and possibly their relationship was platonic because it took Alice a year to realise that More was wearing a hair shirt. They argued about it, but More kept wearing the hair shirt. There’s no other evidence of serious marital discord until they disagreed over the oath. More didn't marry her randomly, he knew her for years, from before he met his first wife.

More did make fun of her, quipping that she was ‘neither a pearl nor a girl’ -it’s less mean in Latin, it’s about the wordplay. Another source has her telling More to get off his butt and put himself out there, saying that if she were a man, she'd be ambitious, she'd go out into the world "and rule and not be ruled". "Wife you speak the truth," More replies. "For I never found you willing to be ruled yet." The mockery tends to be about her being stubborn, not about her level of education.

But Alice gave as good as she got. In a letter she thanks the correspondent for wishing her a long life, saying that she will live a long time so she can ‘plague her husband all the more’. The fact she can laugh at herself suggests she was confident, comfortable in her own skin. I don’t know who Monica Dolan was playing in Wolf Hall, but she certainly wasn’t Alice Middleton More.

Thomas More’s ribald sense of humour was shocking by the nineteenth and twentieth centuries so historians started speculating that he was ‘obsessed’ with sex or somehow repressed, or he hates women because of his lust for them, because surely there MUST be a pathology to explain finding humour in human genitalia. As we all know, sex is deadly serious, if you go ‘haha penis’ there is clearly something deeply darkly wrong with you. Personally, I think it suggests the opposite. I think the fact More can joke about sex suggests he’s relaxed about it; he doesn’t take it seriously. His misogynistic jokes mostly fit with age-old stereotypes so they don’t suggest an unusually high degree of personal misogyny, just the standard level in a misogynistic world.

Pop culture loooooooooves depicting Alice as illiterate. I think it’s to contrast with her bookish author husband. But it’s utterly utterly ridiculous. In both pictures where Alice appears, she’s reading a book. We also have letters between her and More, and in those letters there’s no indication that she’s dictating to a scribe and not writing herself.

Alice was willing to learn to play the recorder- the Mores were a musical family- but she declined lessons in the classics. To be fair, she was a busy woman with a lot of responsibilities. One story has More explaining the mathematical properties of a straight line to his kids, and Alice has enough of this abstract faffing, points to a beam, and tells the kids “THAT is a straight line.” She was also knowledgeable of theology: another story has her arguing with a man over dinner about theology and he quotes Scripture at her. She frowns. She doesn’t remember that in the Bible. She checks her Bible: she’s right, he made it up.

Refreshingly, Geoffrey Elton (who disliked her husband) called her a woman of "sound good sense". But we've yet to see an accurate depiction of her in pop culture. At least one thing is seriously wrong in each depiction. She was literate, she was a loving stepmother, and she did NOT support More over the Oath. In fact, she tried to argue that he'd essentially gone insane, so his refusal to swear the oath must be disqualified as a weird personal eccentricity not a capital crime. No depiction gets all three things right.

There's a reason my profile picture used to be Alice wearing 8 bit sunglasses.

In a nutshell, all the evidence suggests a confident, straightforward, practical, competent, maternal woman.

When will pop culture reflect this? 2058, I estimate.

So nice of the Daily Mail to note that the Waleses were all wearing color-coordinated ensembles yesterday.

Joining William and Kate on the annual morning stroll at Sandringham in Norfolk yesterday were their trio of cheeky children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, nine, and six-year-old Prince Louis. They looked just the part, each sporting a piece of clothing in forest green tartan to match their immaculately dressed parents.

Will & Kate didn't need their kids to wear matching colors in any of the previous Christmas walks.

I guess the family that color coordinates together stays together, right?

Awakening

Summary: A game of truth or dare dissolves into utter chaos.

They’d all been sitting on some beach, in the middle of no where, around a dying fire. They’d even managed to set up the fire the muggle way, which Sirius and James took great pride in, even if it was burning out.

This was their last bit of freedom all together before they started work for the order. Dumbledore hadn’t wanted to let in at first, but it wasn’t like he had much of a choice with the way the war was progressing.

So they’d taken the weekend to enjoy the summer air, escaping to some small town where they’d yet to see another person. Which was probably a good thing, considering how loud they were. They’d started playing a game of truth of dare. Assisted by their lowered inhibitions after an hour of drinking, the game dissolved into chaos.

“Okay,” James said, gathering the attention of everyone back from their laughter, “Who here do you think would have been most likely to have an affair with one of the professors.”

They giggled at the absurdity of the question, until Mary loudly proclaimed, “Lily, of course. All they’d have to do is tell her she’d gotten an O on an assignment and she’d be ready to go down.”

“That’s rich coming from the girl who once sucked off Anderson to get out of a detention.”

“You bitch,” Mary laughed, “I told you that in confidence.”

“No you didn’t,” Marlene said, gasping for breath, “You bragged about that for weeks. Said you rocked his world.”

“Of course I did. I am still me.”

“Okay, Okay,” Sirius said, excitedly, “I’ve got a good one.”

He paused dramatically, allowing for all of the attention to settle onto him before he continued, “Who was, if you are, or who would be, if you aren’t, your gay awakening?”

“Go on then, Sirius. You start,” Dorcas said.

“Mine was Will Middleton.”

“Wasn’t he on Ravenclaw’s Quidditch team?” Peter asked.

“Yeah, he was,” Sirius said, “He was proper fit until I accidentally hit him with a bludger. Broke his nose and everything.”

“I remember that,” James said, “You were going mental afterwards.”

“Can’t really blame me,” Sirius shrugged, before saying to James, “You next then.”

“Oh I shouldn’t,” James scrambled, his face blushing.

“Come on mate, we all know your straight,” Remus said, gesturing to Lily who was curled up next to James.

He shook his head. He tried looking at Lily for help, but she was shaking with the effort of containing her laughter.

“See, Lily wants to know too,” Sirius pushed.

“Don’t bring me into this,” Lily said, “I already know the answer.”

“What? You told her but you won’t tell me?”

“She’s my girlfriend, mate.”

“Yeah and I had to suffer through you whining about her for years. I deserve to know who you’d want to fuck if you were into blokes.”

“Fine, but just know you asked for this,” James sighed, “Regulus.”

“My brother?” Sirius said, “What about him?”

Everyone else in the group figured out what Sirius hadn’t. They were all waiting patiently for Sirius to get it, managing only to stay silent because of their curiosity.

“He’s who I’d be into,” James said, before adding, “Regulus, that is.”

“My brother?” Sirius repeated, yelling this time out the outrageous thought. “My fucking brother?”

None of them could control their laughter anymore, as Sirius fake gagged.

“I told you that you didn’t what to know.”

“Why would you be into my brother?” Sirius asked, before immediately thinking better of it and yelling, “NO! Never answer that question. I don’t want to know.”

“That’s probably for that best,” Lily laughed, loving how embarrassed James was getting. His face had turned a shade of bright red, which she found quite adorable. She decided to save him from his misery by answering the question herself.

“I think it would be Mary.”

“Thanks, babes,” Mary smiled.

“Yeah, I mean your tits are fucking fantastic. Especially, since you got your nipples done. They are fucking sexy.”

“Oh yeah,” Alice said, nodding along, “I’d go with Mary too. Those piercings were sexy.”

“Wait, hold on a second,” Sirius said, “Both of you have seen Mary’s tits?”

“Of course,” Alice said, “We’ve all seen each others naked plenty of time.”

“Naked?” Peter squeaked.

“Yeah,” Lily said, “like sometimes you’ve got to pick an outfit, it’s just easier.”

“Or you need to pick out lingerie that makes you look good and you need an opinion on it,” Marlene explained.

“So you all are just fine with being naked in front of each other?” James asked, his face even more flush that before.

“Well yeah.” Dorcas shrugged.

“I know that all of them will make me feel confident and sexy, unlike some men,” Alice explained.

“Honestly, you’d think that some men just hate women,” Mary said.

“I don’t,” Sirius protested, “Show me your tits.”

Mary rolled her eyes, choosing to flip him off instead of responding.

“My boyfriend, ladies and gentlemen,” Remus said.

“I don’t discriminate,” Sirius winked, “You feel free to whip it out whenever.”

It took them a few minutes to recover. Peter and James had the worst of it, trying to get the image of the of the girls waltzing around their dorm naked all the time, despite that not being an accurate representation.

“Frank next then,” James pushed.

“I dunno,” Frank said, “Mark Hamill? He was good in that muggle film you took me to see.” He was look at Alice, as if waiting for her to confirm if his choice was correct.

“You are so straight,” Remus laughed.

“Mine was Charlotte Miller,” Dorcas said.

“What?” Marlene said, “Mine too!”

“Yeah, her ass was amazing.”

They high-fived over their shared taste. Before kissing while everyone else booed them. The majority of the group were in happy relationships, but the public display of affection was too far for the drunken group not to protest at.

“Mary?” Marlene asked, “How about you?”

“Caitlyn Reeds, snogged her at a party in third year. I snogged Sirius the next day and still liked it, so it took me a while to realize that I was down for anything, but she was still it.”

“Peter?”

“I’ve got no fucking clue,” Peter said, “I guess if I had to pick it’d be Lucas Harrison. He’s nice.”

“Okay, last one,” Dorcas cheered, “Who was it Remus?”

“I hate to disappoint you all, but it was a bloke from my home town that none of you know. Snogged him once and that was that, but a part of me always knew.”

They continued their endless questioning until the fire had burnt out. They walked back to the house they were renting still giddy from the night they’d had, which succeeded in distracting them from the rest of the world.

“I still can’t believe you’d want to sleep with my fucking brother,” Sirius said. Remus rolled his eyes, walking into their room before he could be dragged back into that conversation.

“Goodnight Sirius,” Lily giggled, pulling James along up to their room.

OTD: 28th April 2011

OTD 13 years ago, a pre-wedding reception was held for the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. While the bride and groom didn’t attend, the event was attended by members of the British royal family as well as foreign royals.

The royals did bring out a few nice pieces of jewellery so let’s take a look at them.

Starting off with The Queen, she wore a matching gold and diamond earring and necklace set, reportedly given to her by King Hassan II of Morocco in the 1980s.

Camilla chose some of her favourite pearl pieces for the reception including her four strand pearl choker and a five strand pearl bracelet.

Sophie wore a borrowed earring and necklace set containing white and yellow diamonds from Collins and Sons. The necklace is a stunning necklace that works so well with this outfit.

Both the Duchess of Gloucester and Princess Alexandra opted for emeralds and pearls for the event. With the Duchess of Gloucester choosing to wear earrings and a necklace from the emerald and pearl set of jewels that belonged to her late mother-in-law, Princess Alice, while Princess Alexandra wore her pearl choker with the emerald and diamond clasp, as well as an emerald ring.

A final mention goes to Princess Michael of Kent who wore a pair of diamond topaz earrings and a large diamond and topaz brooch with a pearl pendant. The topaz in the brooch is a stunning colour and the brown of the gown under it really lets it stand out.

Kate Middleton : Leading with her story

Royals are famously seen, not heard, but Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, reversed that trend in March 2024 when at 42, she announced she had been diagnosed with cancer. In a frank video she spoke directly to the public, emphasizing that she and her family needed time to process the surprising diagnosis as she began chemotherapy. Her disclosure came a month after her father-in-law, King Charles, also revealed he had cancer following a procedure to address an enlarged prostate. (Neither shared what type of cancer they were diagnosed with.) As a popular public figure, Middleton’s revelation brought significant attention to cancer awareness and treatment, including the rise in early-onset cancers in patients under age 50.
