Why I think c!Dream is Autistic - Part 3

Alright, you’re gonna want to probably go read part 1 and 2 first, promise they aren’t too long.

Done? Long time no see buddy. :) Good deal. Now finally, the last reason(s) I think Dream is autistic is because of how it fits narratively.

Who better to frame as the villain than someone who is already on the outside, who is already different, weird, a little off, not like everyone else, obsessive, abrasive, and already setting off subconscious red flags of not fitting the norm. There’s a quote that most have probably heard by Andrew Smith that says, “People fear what they don't understand and hate what they can't conquer.” And does that not say it all? Talk about history repeating itself, real history. This truth is the basis of many real wars. And if communicating and thinking differently weren’t enough to garner dislike, sucess and intelligence are another foundation of hate and as I said in part 1, while not true across the board, high IQ is one way they identify people with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). So who better to frame as the villain than an autistic admin infamous for being one of the best Minecraft players.

Of course, I hear you ask - couldn’t you make the same argument for sociopaths/people with ASPD (Antisocial Personality Disorder) are they not also different than most people to garner inherent fear? The answer is: No, not really. Contrary to popular belief, people with ASPD are not the odd balls out but are more likely to be popular and well liked as they lie and manipulate others to get what they want. In other words, there is a more calculated persona/masking in both ASD and ASPD, but while ASD is just trying to fit in, people with ASPD often have an inherent entitlement to the things they want and are trying to gain power and stand above the crowd not in it. In addition, autistic people tend to be honest, to the point of inappropriate or rude because they are straight forward. In the dsmp, Dream’s default isn’t to lie in fact he tells a lot of truth before often being forced to change his answer [clip]. Unlike people with ASPD who lie because they enjoy the power it gives them and to get what they want.

There is of course empathy to be considered when comparing ASD and ASPD as perhaps the main difference between the two and I think there is a lot of evidence that Dream does have empathy. In fact, I think his moral compass is originally one of the strongest before the dsmp slowly wore away the edges. He returns items after wars, fixes creeper holes and destroyed property, helps people mine or gather materials, fights for the side of who was wronged first, constantly gives out food to feed people… etc. He does a lot of caring things he doesn’t have too. That give him no real advantage, but often even end up putting him in a sticky situation. I mean what better example do we need to prove he has empathy than him rebuilding Tubbo’s house [post]. There was no reason or manipulation or obligation to do that, he did it because he saw that Tubbo was upset. I mean I’ve said it before that we can’t truly prove whether someone does or doesn’t has empathy, but we can look at behavior and I’d argue that his less empathetic acts come much later on his arc and are not consistent across the board like they would be if he truly were a sociopath. Leaving us with the most obvious conclusion then that his logical mind that makes him look like he’s unempathetic and his masking must be because he’s autistic instead, which again aligns well with his high intelligence and obsessive development of skill.

Finally, and perhaps most notably, while a lot of times masking is associated with ADHD it is much more notable and important for an autistic person. Because we are not masking just to cover up our stimming or hyperactivity we are putting on a different face to blend in and be accepted and loved. We are shifting the very parts of ourselves to fit in a circle shaped hole when we’re squares. Which is a skill and habit I don’t find it hard to believe that Dream would use for his villain persona, especially since our (my) masks tend to change too based on environment, whether needing to fit into the family dynamic, student culture or professional world where the social rules change. Which is exactly what we see from Dream as his mask changes depending on who he’s with whether that be Tommy, a large audience, Wilbur, his friends, The Warden, Quackity, Badboyhalo, Techno… etc.

In other words, how fitting would it be if a character with the disorder infamous for masking had a literal mask. One that he literally had to take off to discovery who he was all along. What better example of the dsmp main theme of seeing things from other peoples point of view to gain understanding, than the extreme case of that. What better picture of communication issues than a disorder infamous for social struggle. Like not only does it fit so very well with Dream’s character, not only does it make sense with the symbolism of his mask, and the narrative, but it fits the overall arching dsmp story too, because by being autistic Dream is kind of like the ultimate version of the theme and for him to be a main front runner of the story just truly drives the point home in a beautiful and important manner.

first art post of the new year!!! granted, i don't share my art here that much anyway, but– shhh.

hehehehhhooo,, here's something i've been working on for 'bout a month,, albeit not consecutively– took a few,, very very long breaks in between working on this,, but i managed to finish it in the end! am i satisfied with it? .......ehhhh? not completely, but if this took any longer, it might not have seen the light of day, so like. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

anyway,, made a little poster for my favorite fic, tommyinnit's services for villains, vigilantes, and various other vagabonds, by @scorpionoesit!!! it's really really good,,, and i've always wanted to make more art for it,, so i decided– poster! at least,, that's what it's mean to resemble,,, dkdmkdmdkd.

i will freely admit,, i'm... not the biggest fan of the fan-made logo i tried to design for it,, feels a bit boring, and could definitely have used a bit more pizazz, something to make feel more like the fic itself(what does that mean? you figure that out),,,, but– again, steam was running low,, dkdnksjs. graphic design is my passion. i do also have other complaints, but i'm afraid i already punched my one-use self-critique card,, oh well,,, dkdnkxjdkd.

regardless,, even with the flaws only i can really see,, this still turned out pretty okay!! hope you enjoy it, mx. scorpio and mx. alibi!!! and i hope everyone else has a wonderful new year!!!!

Hello!!! Would absolutely love to know if you have any personal headcanons of each dsmp character appearance i.e the hybrid types they may be? (Is Dream human? Or is he some kind of goat-hybrid? Or shapeshifting blob??!)

for c!dream, he's either human or a rabbit hybrid to me! i tend to think that 'just human' is more canon, if you will, but rabbit hybrid is kinda my favorite. i think it's very fitting, as someone who has a rabbit! i specifically see him as a light brown flemish giant or a palomino rabbit, leaning more towards the latter!

c!wilbur is usually also just a guy but if i give him animal features, in my head he's based off a secretary bird!

c!bad is a very tall demon man. c!ant is basically just a cat except a little bigger. think puss in boots. that's ant to me.

c!puffy and c!schlatt are both sheep! a cotswold and a jacob's sheep respectively.

c!tubbo is a goat i guess because it's popular headcanon but honestly? i see him as his minecraft skin. he is just some blonde teenager to me. same with c!tommy. you could find both of them at a mall or whatever.

c!skeppy to me is like.... a diamond construct thing. or at the very least, some kind of diamond based imp. but generally i see him as this small construct! kinda like a copper golem but skeppy.

i dig the idea of a pig hybrid c!niki (i love pigs) but generally she's either human and pretty buff or i'll go with the cat hybrid thing!

c!tina is a jackalope demon thing masquerading as a cat girl. c!hbomb is, hear me out, a cow hybrid also masquerading as a cat girl. this makes sense in my head.

then a lot of my opinions do fall in line with fanon opinion for the most part. like, yeah, phil is a blond dude with wings. techno is obviously a pigman. same for the rest of the dteam (though i kinda have a thing with c!george being part warden 'cause of how much he sleeps, don't ask but they're also both blue coded so). c!sam is obviously a creeper hybrid of some kind.

i want so badly to have c!eret be a swan or peafowl hybrid because those are so elegant and especially peafowl have some amazing colorations that scream royalty but i do dig the herobrine lore connection.

if i had my way, c!jack would be a cyborg donkey hybrid, specifically a mammoth jackstock. it would look so sick.

so i don't think i'm ever really gonna get back into dream smp, yeah? i think the hype's pretty much died down and all. (i mean, considering what i'm about to say, never say never and all, but still.)

but even if i never watch a single mcyt stream again in my life, even if i burn all my old fanart (not happening) and block all the streamers (can i block people on youtube??) ... i still gotta point out how much i actually admire it. it's such a creative and innovative form of storytelling, to my mind! and to be done on the massive scale it mounted to, with so many people—individuals!—working together to tell a story like that ... it's incredibly cool.

not only is the original story within the smp very creative, it also sparked a ton of fan creativity! i don't think i've ever seen so many animatics for a single fandom, outside of hamilton, epic, maybe a few other musicals and podcasts. and dream smp is quite possibly the only fandom i've ever encountered where people have written songs for it/about it. that's so crazy to me!! that's so cool!!

another thought i just had: the format of recording actions taken in the server presents a really unique thing that i think no other format really can, in that it shows the viewer the in-between. yeah, there were the big events where streamers really leaned into their characters, and (iirc) not everything that happened in the server was necessarily canon, but it's still fascinating to me that it was able to do that. you can't do that in a book or movie. episodic stuff, like a tv show or a podcast, you can do some in-between/resting moments, but nothing like the scale that the dream smp did.

and at the end of the day, i think there was always a really fine line between the streamers and their characters that kinda makes me uncomfortable. sometimes it's hard to see that line, and i don't love that. that's why i'll probably never go back, at least not in the foreseeable future. but it's still such a fascinating thing to me. the creativity. the collaboration. the uniqueness and novelty. it's incredible.

i have A LOT to say so its going under the cut this is soso silly

basic bbc ghosts plot: A young woman inherits a huge mansion estate in england from a dubious familial connection and moves in with her husband. They plan to renovate the manor and guesthouses to make into a hotel/venue, but when she falls out a window and almost dies, she comes back to life with the ability to See Ghosts. With the house being very historic, there are quite a few interesting characters (the falling out the window thing might be their fault, actually). Hijinks ensue.

CLEO: Cleo is the Allison of the story, she inherits the house and falls out the window, now.. undead(?) they can see and interact with the cast of Ghosts they’re now stuck with. Making ZombieCleo one of the Alive characters was too funny, sorry.

SCOTT: Scott is Mike!! Cleo’s best friend/partner/chosen soulmate (like in double life), he Cannot see the ghosts but completely trusts they exist.

They get up to various antics as they try to renovate and market the place, usually while being hindered or helped by the ghosts. I haven’t thought of a good pun on the name Button House yet though..

The ghosts are not all from any specific series, but a selection of ghosts/dead characters from multiple mcyt sources ^^

JOE: Joseph Hills takes the role of Thomas Thorne. He is a dramatic regency era poet who mostly follows Cleo around, trying to impress her with his… unique poetry, that was considered before his time. Their ghost theming comes from Beetlejhost of course.

RANBOO: Ronald Booth is Pat, a 1980’s Scout Leader. To be honest, this is just because Ranboo is very associated with the 80’s aesthetic and can fit the silly yes-man subordinate role, and of course was a ghost on the dsmp (Boo).

BDUBS: Bdubs is Robin!! A caveman who lived on the land well before the house was built. He’s seen it all, which fits Bdubs’ storyteller theme!! This is also just a fun visual choice because instead of wearing animal furs he gets to wear a big mossy coat. He also talks in a quite a unique and funny way which could replace how Robin talks like. Yknow, a Caveman. There was also a tiny bit in.. last life? Where bdubs was a ghost? (We were running out of ghosts at this point.)

SLIME: Charles Slime is Humphrey Bone, a headless tudor nobleman!!! Slime has a pretty constant track record of dying dramatically in mcyt (dsmp, epic smp, slimecicle cinematic universe) hence getting to be a ghost here. He has a lot of comedy that i think fits pretty well with being a ghost and with the visual humour of having your body separate to your head <3

FLIPPA: Juanaflippa as Jemima!!! I had to get one of the Eggs in here, even if i dont know much about qsmp at this point its just too perfect for one of them to be Jemima, since we have Charlie why not have Juanaflippa ^^ This can fit the common bbc ghosts fanon of Humphrey being found family for Jemima, with Charlie and Flippa’s father-daughter relationship. Creepy little singing ghost girl!!!

QUACKITY/MEXICAN DREAM: Yeah ok we were really running out of mcyt ghosts at this point, if you dont know anything about the dsmp you would probably think im making this up- uh, quackity plays him, he died and became a very prominent dsmp ghost. He takes the role of Julian as a 90’s politician character (like quackity/md in el rapids etc) here. I GUESS.

GHOSTBUR: Im pretty sure that while alive Kitty didnt blow up a country or whatever but the innocent and kind character of ghostbur fits the role of Kitty pretty well, with both having poor/inaccurate memories of their lives and being very sweet. A georgian noblewoman! Instead of Kitty he’d be called Willy or something. That way one of the ghosts can still have an innuendo name. Thats important.

JIMMY: Jimmy (James) as Mary. A stuart era peasant who got burned in the witch trials. He could still have the power to make people smell smoke, i think it fits the canary thing a bit. AND SPOILERS FOR BBC GHOSTS, Mary being the First Ghost of the main group to get.. sucked away is just too perfect. While never explicitly being a Ghost, Jimmy has such a connection to death that i think im justified.

PIX: Pixie as Fanny!!! He used to own the house many years ago and is now a ghost that really wants it to be perfectly historically preserved. Pix was a ghost in empires s2 and an archeologist who wanted to preserve history of course, so this fits the really proper and old fashioned personality of Fanny pretty well. Also her love of animals fits pix having the ghost cat and the dodos…

SCHLATT: Schlatt as The Captain, a repressed gay ww2 Captain who never actually saw any combat. He can fit the leader role that the Captain does, especially the fact that he just assumes himself the leader, and the others kind of don't take him seriously. Schlatt was a ghost, Glatt, on the dsmp! He will be a bit less.. nice? Than the bbc ghosts captain, but could still have a good bit of development.

Tommy- Lonely or Vast whichever is more heartwrenchingly terrible in the moment. Lonely bc exile and Vast bc of the tower

Ranboo- Eye!!!!! silly haha reason: eyes of ender and heterochromia, ACTUAL reason: he just wants to know what's going on with the enderwalk man he wants to know and they've got the experiments they're gaining knowledge but at the cost of themself he's so Eye coded ouadfgiahgf (could also be Stranger bc he is a mystery even to himself and also they are half mystery creature)

Tubbo- Desolation. Nukes. making sure he and his loved ones stay safe by destroying literally anything that comes near them <3 also like the cold war vibes of snowchester and the constant overhanging threat of annihilation <3

Technoblade- Slaughter, i kinda feel like this needs no explanation

Phil- End, again no explanation needed that's literally his wife

Wilbur- End, Desolation, Slaughter, Spiral? idk take ur pick I think Spiral is especially fun but not exactly in character. End and Desolation are probably the most in character. Slaughter bc music symbolism

Dream- Web, this one also feels obvious. Could also be Stranger but that's just cuz that iconic smiley face feels kinda Stranger-y

Badboyhalo- CORRUPTION!!!!! ouughghg eggpire arc my beloved <3

Fundy- Spiral? mayhaps? anyone else remember his nightmares those were sick as fuck and like he could tell the future or something and that was passed down to him from Sally anyone remember that?

Sapnap- Desolation. He's a fire dude

George- Corruption. cuz of the mushrooms I think. Maybe Spiral cuz he couldn't tell if he was asleep or awake during that whole XD thing

Quackity- Flesh, he ate that heart that one time that was freaky also I'm still thinkin about the butcher arc sorry las nevadas fans. But also dude was so scared of being prey to someone else's whims and plans that he became the hunter so maybe he's the Hunt or the Web

Karl- Spiral bc of the forgetting <3 maybe there's another one that fits better but the aesthetic of Spiral fits him so well

Literally everyone in the Eggpire- Corruption!!! i can't remember all of em but Hannah and Antfrost were definitely there

Foolish- End. cuz he's a totem of undying and also he was like super afraid of dying

Sam- Buried. Put his ass in the prison lmao

Schlatt- Corruption. There's probably one that fits better but when you think about his declining health and also that it's a joke about him being a corrupt politician I think it works

Niki and Jack- Hunt because they were trying to kill Tommy lol there are probably better ones for both of them. Niki could be Lonely or Desolation and Jack could also be Desolation

Michael McChill- Eye. I didn't pay that close attention to his lore but. Didn't he try to make a record of the entire dmsp lore or try to understand it or something. C!McChill fans what was he doing

Eret- Hunt or Slaughter for the final control room but then she gets kinda Eye coded when she makes the museum. End would be sick as hell but I cannot think of a single basis in the story for this. Maybe Buried for the final control room thing too bc it was a small space but that feels like a stretch

i definitely missed a few characters in there so if anyone has ideas for them feel free to voice them. What did I learn from this? No one on the dsmp was afraid of the dark that's what I fucking learned not a single Dark avatar on there.

On the tnt duo conflict

Tbh I’ve always assumed c!Wilbur has been in love with c!Quackity the whole dsmp for a number of reasons:

The time Q asked if he was jealous of him and Schlatt and Wilbur’s voice broke

The hate-love song Wilbur sang to Quackity on Niki’s birthday “you are the perfect one for me, if you promise to never speak and just stand there in my room looking pretty”

Revivebur being obsessed with Q and essentially pulling his pigtails as a way to get his attention

Being devastated when Q doesn’t show up and when Q says he doesn’t think about him

Now if we imagine that their headcanon conflict means that actually c!Q is in love with c!Wilbur and not the other way around.

Putting that into perspective would mean that the reason Q rejects Wilbur is because he knows Wilbur isn’t romantically interested in him. And Q doesn’t want to get his heart broken.

Headcanon on c!borealtrio and eye-contect:

Ranboo hates eye-contact because they're half Enderman. Initially they didn't even know this themself, and they were pretty used to forcing or awkwardly avoiding it anyways, so it didn't really come up for a while. EmDuo picked up on it eventually.

Philza just immediately adapted to not making eye-contact before they even had a proper conversation about it, because he's just amazing at noticing stuff like that and doing whatever makes people feel more comfortable. Basically, he's just naturally absurdly good at adjusting his behavior.

Technoblade on the other hand sucks at it. Not maliciously, he's always doing his best, he just tends to stare a lot (partially a Piglin thing, they emote almost exclusively through eyes). When he remembers, he immediately looks away kinda awkwardly.

c!Ponk headcanons, please!

I'm so glad to share!

Ponk uses all pronouns. He got their cyborg/prosthetic parts made and attached all on aer own, with no help from others. As the SMP's only important doctor, he is actually incredibly smart. Even at voids worst, xe is still incredibly kind.

While definitely known for his medical knowledge by most, he's pretty good with all hands-on science based stuff. Ponk's also a fan of plants, and that can show in some of their work and her decor.

Constantly busy means Ponk is always a bit tired, but at the end of the day, fae's willing to do whatever's needed to help someone else heal. Mostly physically, as that's what fae knows, but Ponk also wants others to heal mentally and emotionally.

Also, at the end of the day, void is... never going to get over Sam. Ponk can't help it, fae loves him. To a fault, but not to the determent of her morals.

Also yes, zhe is allergic to cats still. Despite vyr's best efforts, Ponk just can't get over it. E constantly has to take allergy meds when going to hang out with Antfrost.

adding on to what you said, the person that made that dsmp novel also said in the comments that they liked that dsmp nuke reset final thing which gives a good indication that they aren't all that c!dream neg. I think they see c!dream is morally grey leaning to evil. Also skimmed through some pages and saw there was quite a lot of c!Punz focus which is nice. Though, personally with them skipping so many details makes me upset because I like things as accurate to canon as much as possible.

every character should be written morally grey as well so making certain people too heroic is a no go for me too

Yea I agree that does seem the vibe I was getting, that things are more morally grey, which is good. But yea with Tommy as a more protagonist hero, I’m with you, it’s a pass for me… I was told that there was lots of Punz but… as much as I love my boy, I find it real annoying to read scuffed Dream takes and lore inaccuracies (unless someone is going full on non canonical) as context and the full picture is so important to tell a story with so many perspectives especially when making basically a lore novel…

Favorite Passerine character? Favorite moment/quote/scene? When did you first read it? Do you have any songs you associate with any of the characters/the story as a whole? :D

Also yknow how you mentioned yesterday that my PPT got you thinking about au characters’ enneagrams? Passerine is such a cool example bc some characters keep their enneagrams but just portray them a bit differently/lean into different things (i.e. p!Techno still being an 8 [though without a strong wing, I’d say]), whereas it’s a really cool look into how aus can take the canon characters and change them/make them their own while still keeping them recognizably That Character. Namely I’m convinced p!Wilbur is a 1 rather than a 3 (and p!Tommy’s a 7 rather than a 4), and it’s just so interesting. :D Wilbur changes to operating out of the gut triad rather than the shame triad, bUt 1s disintegrate to 4 in stress, so he still takes on elements of the shame triad as he deteriorates over the story, which is one way he resembles c!Wilbur in ways while still definitely being his own separate character.

Ok, favorite passerine character has got to be Technoblade I think! No strong reason why other than it’s Technoblade and his character was the most fun to watch change throughout the story

My favorite moment was when Wilbur and his mom had that conversation in the tower.

“Will you forgive me,” Wilbur asked, his voice rough and small, “if I still want to live without you?”

As for songs I associate with the characters/ story I could only think of Little Soldier Boy (cough the one I made into an animatic coughh)

AND YEAHHH I remember you talking about how neat it was to see passerine!techno integrate into a 2 (or atleast have those 2 qualities? Idk the right language to use with enneagram stuff)

I have no thoughts to add on Wilbur but I am eating up everything you just said about him being a 1. Hhggdghdjdjd
