but the day before allison's party, when he had come into school, he wouldn't even look at y/n. it hurt, they really loved josh, just not in that way. they didn't think he'd start ignoring them and not answering their calls just because they didn't like him back.

had them turning him down really made him that upset? upset enough to call their spanish teacher a cunt?

there had to have been something else going on to make him so mad. and what ever was wrong, they wanted to know, they wanted to help. but josh wasn't going to let them. so they just decided to leave it be. eventually it would pass.

allison smiled warmly at y/n when they stepped onto the little welcome mat in front of the door, finally inside where it was warm.

"hey, haven't seen you in a while," allison said as she watched y/n start to unzip their coat, "i wouldn't take that off, we were gonna hang out in the garage soon, y'know."

y/n chuckled, knowing that that meant they'd be going into the garage to smoke so that the smell wouldn't bother anyone inside (or leave even a trace that meghan's parents would smell and then ground her for).

"ah, gotcha, and yeah, sucks that we don't have any classes together this year,"

some of the people sitting with y/n nodded at them as they walked out and back into the house. before y/n even got to the door they could hear the music pumping from the speakers inside. it sounded like the party was in full swing.

inside, the place was crowded, people were shouting to talk to each other but it seemed impossible to hear anything, no matter how loud you were.

y/n found the bathroom which astonishingly wasn't occupied at the moment and stepped in, locking the door behind them just in case. and after a short minute, they were back out in the crowd.

on the way out they noticed zach, talking to meghan at the door. they looked at him, considering asking him about josh, but before they could even make a decision or think of what they'd say, someone else stepped in front of them.

josh merely glanced up for a second to see who'd walked in, and then looked right back at allison.

y/n sat down diagonal from josh, a less than happy look on their face. before saying anything they watched as allison unwrapped the little package josh had handed her.

"what! this is so cool," she said and looked at josh.

y/n looked at what was in her hands. it was a little plastic bag of weed. josh had never smoked weed, that y/n knew of anyway. what the hell was going on with him?

allison stood up and went to see if meghan had papers for it. y/n was about to open their mouth to say hi to josh, see if they could talk to him, but zach beat them to it. as josh stood up to go talk to zach, he glanced at y/n again. he was barely even acknowledging them.

before long allison and her friend returned with a bible in hand, and josh and zach sat back down.

y/n wanted to say something to josh, but no time felt like a good time. parties weren't really the place for asking your friend why he felt awkward around you after admitting his feelings for you.

allison took one puff from the joint, and zach stood up, announcing that he was gonna get going. everyone continued to puff and pass as zach walked outside, allison following soon after.

after a few minutes, someone passed the joint, which was now maybe an inch and a half long, to y/n. they held up their hand, "nah, i'm good," they stood up from their seat, "i think i'm gonna hit the road too." y/n waved to the people in the garage and walked to the door. y/n had heard josh mumble a goodbye to them.

what the fuck were they supposed to do with that?

i guess he's just not fucking talking to me anymore.

they thought as they walked past zach and allison hurriedly, trying not to interrupt or be noticed and have to explain to allison why they were leaving so soon too.

at the end of meghan's street y/n shivered, looking both ways even though they knew that there were almost no cars out at this time of night.

it was cold out, and y/n didn't want to have to walk so far to get back home. they walked down the sidewalk, thinking about what yards they could sneakily cut through to get home sooner.

after a couple minutes, they remembered a small span of woods that their neighborhood was right by.

screw the cold, i just wanna get home.

they turned, walking fast to get there as soon as possible, and because they felt angry.

one of their best friends, not talking to them anymore. great.

it wasn't long before they started shuffling through crunchy leaves, barely able to see by the light of the moon which sat in the sky above bare and scraggly branches of the trees. the sky was pretty at this time of night. the only downside was that y/n had to step carefully and tripped every so often.

the walk was lovely, it was calm outside and the leaves gave the air a crispy scent. they were still upset, but this was making it better.

a bad feeling started to fall over them. they couldn't place what it was coming from or why, but labeled it as feeling upset about josh. it felt like more than that though. that was all they could think about; how mad they were. but they weren't really considering how josh was feeling. no one really did.

y/n started to feel like the night, the trees and the leaves were consuming them, like they were trapped out there in the woods for some reason.

they sped up, wanting to get home faster now. the crisp scent was starting to change. the air smelled acrid and felt hollow, and the fetor only intensified as they walked on.

it soon became unbearable, y/n thought that maybe there was a deer or something that had passed. they held their breath and sped up to just below a run, which was difficult to do. but that smell. that smell, they wanted to outrun it, but they seemed to only walk further into it.

their shoe softly thudded against something soft, and cushiony on the ground. they made a gasp like scream as they let go of their breath.

they stood still for a moment, that consuming feeling engrossing them, they felt surrounded. animals died in nature all the time, but whatever dead animal y/n had just ran into, they wanted to be away from it.

they took a step back, breathing heavily, moving away from the thing. the leaves beneath their feet crackled in protest of being stepped on.

but between their steps, they could hear distant crunching. fast crunching, with few pauses in between. running.

probably just another animal.

maybe it was the same animal that killed the one laying in front of y/n.
