dont like people calling davejade a “straight ship for straight people” theyre so bi4bi (theres no way jade isnt pan or something be so fr) jade is a badass who can fire a shotgun shes not a damsel in distress and also theres rosemary parallels. she effortlessly allows dave to soften and roll down his onion layers of irony by just being herself which he doesnt really do with anyone else (i’d easily wager they have a deeper bond than john and dave) and they have a great dynamic. whatever ………… they are cute To Me

if you ever find yourself missing homestuck in the old days before postcanon, or even just the old days of homestuck fandom, you should read karkat goes to a convention immediately.

this is the most homestuck thing i have read since homestuck.

act 1 of kgtac is completed, and is the main draw here. act 2 is currently ongoing and is pretty much completely unrelated to act 1. i think it's alright. but act 1 is absolutely a must-read.

Detective Pony by sonnetstuck (dirk)

do i even need to explain this one? it's detective pony. it's a great character study of dirk. i'm sure you've all heard of it. if you haven't read it, go do that now. please.

Jade Route by SPICYYETI (jade)

jade route is a post-epilogues comic following meat!jade who is trapped in a body controlled by calliope. it's a take on the "ending" that the epilogues don't offer. i think it's pretty clever - it does a great job of using the medium. also, it's about jade :) may or may not have had an impact of some size on how i personally read jade.

ok, this series only contains one fic (for now). it's called "the calm is terrifying when the storm is all you've known." ok i literally could not put this fic down. it has the best hook i've ever seen. a proper fucking novel. and some of the best character writing i have EVER seen for the whole strilonde family. augh it's so good. and the art is really good too (YES IT'S ILLUSTRATED).

The Eurydice Suite by callmearcturus [E] (gen; davekat)

inception au. some of the coolest action and plot stuff with an ensemble cast i've ever read followed by the best davekat fic i've ever read. really cool stuff.

Catacombs by oxfordRoulette [E] (jadekat; dirkjohn)

another series. it's a d&d-like au. very tongue in cheek about this fact at times. the real draw here is the third fic in the series, Vanitas Vanitatum, which has stellar dirk and john writing. you could read it on its own, but the first two fics are also QUITE good, are about jadekat, and the second one sets up vanitas beautifully, so... you should read all three??? :3c

Homestuck Made This World by Ranged Touch (analysis)

hsmtw is a readthrough/analysis podcast whose goal is not to analyze homestuck on its own terms, but to challenge it and put it back into its historical context. it's not the easiest to listen to as a homestuck fan - the hosts are very critical at times, and i don't always agree with their opinions on things that happen in homestuck - but i think the analysis about what homestuck does, tries to do, and is responding to is very important, especially for people who weren't there for homestuck's original run. which... includes me! i read homestuck in 2014. i missed most of the most important homestuck historical moments. in any case, hsmtw changed the way i look at homestuck and other media. highly recommend, at the very least for understanding homestuck's historical context

Davekat: 9/10, its good!!! i enjoy it in homestuck proper a whole bunch!! fannon has soured it for me a little (and the way davekat writers tend to write rosemary makes me want to combust), but good in hs itself.

erisol: 8/10, its got an interesting dynamic for sure??? the fannon takes for both eridan (either cronus 2.0 or uwu soft boy who did no wrong at all) and sollux (4channer??? what???) are pretty mid but within homestuck itself i could enjoy it.

davesol: 9/10!! theyre the same guy and idk it could be funny . pitchpale except theyre both really casual about it .

erikar: 10/10 . no i will not elaborate .

solkat: 10/10, i shipped this before i even got super into homestuck, their dynamic is just really fun to me.

Ive only ever read Homestuck and never even touched the epilogues so forgive me if I'm missing something, but in homestuck doesn't Dave state multiple times that he has no interest in troll romance. I don't really understand davekat at all given that there's multiple panels with the two explaining that they clearing want different things in a relationship, let alone different types of romance. Dave didn't even want to be with Terezi after she started her blackrom with gamzee anf I think that's an important part of Dave as a character. He grew up in an inherently isolating environment that he outright states makes it hard for him to connect with people. Where we left in homestuck he was figuring out navigating just normal friendships really so I don't even understand the appeal to shop the two. Sure, they have some cute moments together, but from my point of view there's no version of the two that could be in a fulfilling healthy relationship together.

Sorry for the rant, I recently re read homestuck for the first time in years and came back to tumblr to see what was going on in the fandom. I know that davekat has always been a popular ship but I assumed by this point in the fandom most of the people left would've actually *read* the source material. I know the epilogues kinda go hogwild but... Like come on

It's alright. But yeah, Dave stated that he has no interest in quadrants or want to be part of any troll poly relationship. My guess is that once Post Retcon timeline happened thanks to John, people assume he would be accepting of quadrants or that he and Karkat will be monogamous relationship just like how Kanaya is married with Rose. It just makes it all the more strange then he started acting happy and merry with Karkat just because VRISKA saved his sister from being a complete depressed alcoholic. You would think he would spend time more with family/friend that he had always wanted to see. But I guess Rose is too busy making out with her lesbian girlfriend to give a shit, so why should he bother her? Seems like the morals for Homestuck and the fandom itself is friendships and family don't matter. It's all about who fucks with who, but not actually fucking because sex is a no-no, even if they are legal age.

11. Least favorite kid?

Jake. I know he's thematically important but he annoys me so much 😭 I can't help seeing him as a source of tension in his friend group, despite the fact that he actively despises their romantic advances. I used to dislike all of the alpha kids, but the other three have grown on me a lot. I don't think I actively dislike any of them anymore, but Jake is difficult for me to really enjoy as a character.

12. Least favorite troll?

Tavros. I know, I know, it's absolutely horrible that the Vriska fan dislikes Tavros. Again, I don't actively dislike any of the trolls, Tavros just fails to captivate me. Everyone else I've had phases for. Tavros? Well. He never really got a chance to make anything of himself, which is mostly the narrative and Vriska's fault, but as a result, he's just a difficult character for me to enjoy.

18. NOTP?

This is a difficult one!! I don't interact with a lot of ship content for pairings I don't like, so I've actually forgotten any more niche pairings I don't ship. The most popular ships I dislike are probably DaveKat and DirkJake. I have my reasons for them both, but it mostly comes down to the fact that a lot of times, when a pairing gets popular, bad content for them becomes really prevalent and difficult to avoid.

I used to be a DaveKat shipper around the time of Homestuck^2, but most of the content I see for it feels really out of character -- even in Homestuck^2 itself, I was just really starved for content. Another thing that contributes to my dislike of this ship is a huge rise of people getting into the fandom just to ship DaveKat. The "yeah I skipped to act 4, got bored, and went to AO3" sort that DaveKat tends to attract. Not a criticism of the ship itself, it just makes it unpalatable for me.

I think it's in part because, when you refuse to see your favorite pair outside of the context of shipping them together, they lose a lot of what makes them individuals. I see this for most ships, but particularly very popular pairings. DirkJake is the same for me, plus their canon relationship is really . . . less than ideal in a way that I don't care to imagine salvaging because I don't enjoy Jake as a character.

Alright, one TWO more that I just remembered from the earlier days. JohnDave. To me they're friends! Very good friends. Best bros, even. I love to imagine their silly and wicked cool antics, I don't like to imagine them together -- which is really ironic, actually, because I found out what fanfiction was after googling something related to Homestuck for an essay I was writing for fun, which, of course, led me straight to some JohnDave.

FINALLY, EriSol also used to be a NOTP . . . ECIP actually started out because I was asking myself the question: how can I make these two work? Now I am, for better or worse, a bona fide EriSol shipper. It's not the worst thing in the world!

31. What do you think of the ancestors?

I don't think they were explored enough for me to have a big opinion on them. In my opinion, they were most important to canon in how they shaped the trolls. For example, Mindfang's role as a role model for Vriska, and how these historical figures shaped the FLARPing and relationships of their ecto-offspring. They also provide a lot of historical context for Alternia, but I honestly can't see them as characters in and of themselves.

Dave was a sloppy sprawl across the couch. Limbs loose, a foot hooked over the back of it and one arm hanging over the edge, he seemed content, eyes closed and his shades perched on top of his head. A dinosaur documentary he’d already seen a million times played on the TV, the soft, droning voice washing over the scene in a blue and green glow. The empty chip bag on the coffee table spelled lazy, but Karkat saw something different, remembering clearly just how tense and wired Dave had been in the beginning. At the sound of the door opening, he didn’t even flinch, only stretching his fingers absently toward the soft jingle of the cat’s collar as it sniffed the bag.

Maybe if they were different people, Karkat would have been annoyed to come home and find his boyfriend’s mess, evidence of various activities engaged in on his day off scattered across the room like clothes on a bedroom floor. Instead, he just felt a wave of affection as he shrugged out of his coat and toed off his shoes, avoiding drying canvases on his way to drop his keys on the counter. He’d already made up his mind to join Dave, but when Dave’s eye slit open at the sound of the keys, turning fond as it caught on him, he felt stupid with need.

As he crossed to the couch, he made a shooing motion with his hands. "Alright, scooch. If you're going to make eyes at me like that, I expect you to be fucking prepared for the consequences by now."

Dave, the insufferable asshole, just grinned at him. "Hi to you too. How was work?"

"Miserable." Karkat fit his hands under Dave's back, bodily lifting him out of the way enough to flop down into the corner of the couch. He told himself that he hated the way Dave seemed pleased with this, but when Dave flopped back onto him, he knew better. "As per fucking usual."

Dave suckered onto him like he’d gotten a degree in it, looping his arms around Karkat’s shoulders and laying heavily into him. Karkat could feel the curve of his smile against his cheek, so fond it seemed to radiate off of him, sinking into Karkat’s skin and warming his chest. "So you're so glad to come home to your wonderful, loving boyfriend, right?"

The answer was yes. An undeniable, burning yes, so certain that it was taking all of Karkat's self-control not to kiss him stupid, settling for pushing his nose into Dave's cheek and holding him close, just soaking in the comfort of him after a day that had been far too long. But the monster that lurked in the back of his head and made him say stupid things that he didn't mean said, "You mean the terror leaving crumbs in my couch."

But Dave just hummed, threading his fingers up into Karkat's hair and scratching at his scalp, the way he loved. He was so beautifully unbothered, tragically used to Karkat’s particular brand of bullshit. "That complaint doesn't work when you eat on the couch more than I do."

"May's going to get into your chips."

"He'll be fine. It's empty," Dave said, dismissively.

Karkat hummed. He kissed into the space under Dave’s jaw, taking a quiet pleasure in how easily Dave tipped his head for him, loose and trusting. "What's your plan for the rest of the day?"

"Suck as much attention from my boyfriend as possible," Dave replied without hesitation, earning a snort from Karkat.

"It's a miracle you don't waste away when I'm gone," Karkat teased.

“It is,” Dave sighed, as though discussing a real tragedy. “It’s so hard, Karkat. It’s hard and no one understands. Nine hours with no one to bother. And May barely even tolerated my cuddles.”

“As if you weren’t texting Rose all day.”

“That’s different. She’s my sister. It’s her lot in life to be informed of the wonders of evolution every three days. Also, I can’t bury my face in her tits while the sweet sounds of vocal recreations wash over me. I mean, I could, but just because I’m from Texas doesn’t mean I need to be the posterchild for what’s wrong with Southerners.”

“I’m never going to understand what a Texas is,” Karkat said. “Half of that made no sense to me.”

5. Do you respond to comments, why or why not? Yeah I try to reply to all. I think there's like two with just an emoji I haven't replied to. But it usually takes me a little time, esp right after publishing something, to reply, I save them up a little. But like now, when it's been a while since publishing and I think a week or more since a new comment, I get excited and rush over immediately haha.

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? well all that are ended have happy endings. The angstiest rn is probably the Alberto angst one, hold my breath for me, but if it actually goes somewhere story-wise and not just short standalone chapters, I'm hoping to veer it somewhere happy. Boy deserves to heal. I kind of doubt I'd ever write something w an angsty ending. For me what's the point of escapism if it's not happy and carefree (I say, following Eli's planned tragedy with hawk eyes HAHA). I'll get out more angst when I finish the untitled Big Sad Gay Fic but that'll have a happy ending too.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Well. You already know. I write anything I want to, tbh. I think my "genre" is "spicy vanilly" like I'll add elements of kink but keep it pretty soft and gentle still. Sorry to go on a tangent here but truly believe that's to do w my identity being somewhere on the ace spectrum, if kink goes too far I just don't understand it. I feel like I write all my pwps from a very emotional perspective rather than a physical perspective, and for me it's hard to grasp kinks where I don't understand the emotions of it. I guess! I do enjoy occasionally reading stuff that's kinkier and more physical, just yeah. I don't understand it enough to write it.

Have you ever co-written a fic before? no, though I'm working on some stuff with @albertolovesluca! not co-authoring but we're bouncing ideas for each others' fics and it's lovely and he's helped me a LOT! I've not really interacted enough w people before to have anyone to talk ideas with so it's been a very fun and rewarding experience<3

12. What’s your all time favorite ship? Well I'm a hyperfixator at heart so that changes whenever I change fandoms but the actual OTP that remains after years are probably Klavier/Apollo from Ace Attorney, I periodically fall back into them even now, something like 12 years (fuck! I feel old) after getting into them. All the rest have mostly faded away, though the biggest ones have been Davekat (Homestuck) and Wolfstar (Harry Potter) but I feel like nothing can compare to Luberto since I haven't actively participated in fandom or writing before them.

14. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? Hmm I think my favorite published one is you've been hiding all your life bc that one's so intensely personal to me. Like reading it back I'm a little more "eh, it's alright I guess", but it was such a profound and transformative experience to write. I feel like it untangled some knots inside me. As a whole I think make me crescendo is my best pwp at least. I think it's hard to compare the pwps with always be this close but that one was really, REALLY fun to write. 3

Though I feel pretty certain the Big Sad Gay Fic will be my fav when it's done, simply bc I have never done anything properly multichapter, it's very personal to me, and I believe in its concepts and am in love with some of the more pivotal scenes I've written... I think! We actually made some progress on completely rearranging a lot last weekend but aren't done so it's all a little up in the air rn!
