10 Comfort Shows / Movies

Got tagged by @emeraldhazeart to do one of these? Thanks. c: Likewise I'm not going to do these in any order because I'd have to think a bit harder about it, but I'll try not to list (all of) my favourite movies of all time and focus on stuff I find comforting. 🌺

The Care Bears Adventure In Wonderland - I have to mention this one because I rewatched and rewinded it so many times as a child that the videotape got worn. Rewatched it again recently and realised I can still heavily relate to the film's 'Alice', so it left a lasting impression. Psps, this one's up on Youtube for free...

2. Come Outside - Another show from my childhood, which I haven't gone back to rewatch. It's sort of like a kid's version of how it's made with a sweet auntie figure and a mischievous but cute dog.

3. Wander Over Yonder - Okay so this is just leaking into my favourite shows, but I really like WOY. It's funny and visually stunning and Wander's optimism can be infectious.

4. Kiki's Delivery Service - I could put a lot of Ghibli films on this list, like My Neighbor Totoro or Ponyo or The Cat Returns, but I'm choosing Kiki because it spoke the clearest to me about being in a difficult place and sharing kindness with others - and without having as intense themes as something like Howl's Moving Castle or Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away, which I also like, but for different reasons.

5. Pokemon 4Ever - Hnngh I didn't even watch this one as a child. I watched it for the first time, like, last year. But it's really special and I love Celebi I can't even begin to describe it. Maybe it's because it's got that Pokémon Colosseum thing going on, I don't know.

6. Beauty and the Beast - Uh favourite Disney movie. Again I have a few of these. It good. Next

7. Come Dine With Me - I used to watch it a lot. I like cooking competition trash TV, sorry... This only wins out over Cake Wars because I'm pretty sure I saw more of it, but I love that too.

8. Poirot - One does not generally think of murder when one thinks of comfort, but this basically encompasses any and all murder mystery shows my grandma has playing on the TV when I go to her house. I haven't seen Poirot for a while, but I think he's my favourite of the main chracters I see on these things - and I don't get as riled up as I do while watching Doc Martin, Heartbeat or Father Brown!

9. The Way Of The Househusband - I think I watched all of what was available of this in one sitting when it came out, and I haven't really returned to it since ... but that's a lot more than I do for other shows. You've probably seen snippets of the manga on Tumblr. It's simple, it's one running joke, but it's a good one.

10. Wallace and Gromit - All episodes / films of Wallace and Gromit have a few intense and scary scenes for young children! But I would still watch them for comfort. There's just something reassuring and familiar about this man and his dog.

Rambling about the Ghibli movies I’ve seen

1. Howl’s Moving Castle

This was my first ever Ghibli movie! And I loved it and I still love it. It was like this amazing discovery and I was hooked on the animation, the character design and the story. There were funny moments, thoughtful moments and even scary ones. I remember thinking Calcifer was hilarious and I watched it dubbed in Spanish and Howl’s voice is the same as Castle/Nathan Fillion, but the VA does a great job. It’s one of my favorites, probably the most.

2. From up on Poppy Hill

Watched it in English and I’ll probably rewatch it that way just for Anton Yelchin. It was yet another surprise. Has a good tone and music and the story is okay until the weird SPOILER “are they siblings?” part END SPOILER. Yep, I get it was because of the war and all that. Anyway, it’s on my top list. Also, I ended up expecting a kiss or hug or something but then I read Ghibli doesn’t portray relationships that way... and I’m okay with that. 

3. The Secret World of Arriety

This movie was so pretty! Well, all of them are pretty, but I really liked the production design in this one. And my first time watching a Ghibli movie in Japanese (Your Name was my first movie in Japanese and I had rewatched Howl’s... with subs before, but you know). It feels like a fairytale and it has great music. 

4. Spirited Away

I guess this is some sort of Alice in Wonderland Ghibli version. And, oh, my, is it bonkers. Lots of creativity here with the character designs, the story is great but it had a lot of WTH moments and I really wanted them to reunite after all that.

5. Kiki’s Delivery Service

This one was a little boring. It looked promising, I love witches and the premise is interesting, but it dragged a little, the boy is so annoying and my favorite character is the cat, so... 

6. Ponyo

The Little Mermaid, Ghibli version (btw, I got nothing against retelling fairytales, because they do it in such a creative way). This was the opposite: weird start, got me hooked. Ponyo is a delightful character. Between my favorites.

7. Princess Mononoke

Loved the idea and the beginning, got weirder and weirder. I get it could be a product of its time, but the story would benefit from a little more work. Although I liked the spirits design and it obviously inspired the creators of ATLA, especially in the creature design for Korra.

8. Castle in the Sky

Another product of its time in terms of pacing and the strange obsession of grown men towards a little girl. It was... nice. Reminded me a lot of Atlantis, so I guess Disney took some notes. The design of the city was good and the lore interesting. And the boy got me chuckling in the action scenes, doing all that barefoot. 

9. My Neighbor Totoro

Talking about cute. This movie is so simple and yet so good. The tiny Totoro has to be my favorite Ghibli creature and it has a lot of charm. 

10. Whisper of the Heart

While I usually hate those kind of endings (love has had me waiting enough), it made me feel hopeful instead of sad. Another movie with a slow pace but a really long scene is just following a cat, so of course it was going to get on the top of my list. Is quite relatable as a writer and I sure hoped I’ve had (or had now) that support from my parents. The scenes of the book look great and even though I already knew what was going to happen from 5 minutes in, I didn’t even care.

dear ponyo,

hi baby. this morning we finished a great series on apple tv. the ending didn’t make us sad like ted lasso did. then in the afternoon dad and i went to the clinic to get our second doses. it wasn’t any less painful than the first but i pulled through. after which we took your sisters to the vet to get their stitches removed. bambi was nervous the entire trip back and forth, milo was too but less so. their incisions were infected but nothing too dangerous, we were told after-care measures which were a breeze to do. i hope bambi’s wound finally dries up. they also got their ears cleaned by the nice vet there, you’ve met her right? she cleaned your ears before.

dad and i are rewatching after life, this time on the big screen. you loved our big tv, didn’t you? yeah we do too. and we miss you constantly marveling at its immensity. we ate burgers and smoked bacon the entire day today and we loved it. we can’t have chicken and fish yet until 24 hours after our shots so we’re making do.

dad isn’t feeling well, and honestly i’m in low spirits too. he fell asleep a while ago and i haven’t taken my meds so it’s far-fetched i could fall asleep anytime soon. bambi is sleeping in the bed with us with a cone around her neck because she keeps licking her belly. the vet strictly prohibited her from doing that because it worsens her infection. she walks funny with the e-collar on which gave us quite the laugh.

hope dad gets well soon. it’s a long weekend so i’m looking forward to a movie marathon.

think this is gonna be all for today. i’m gonna attach some pics i took of bambi in the car to the vet. i hope you’re okay there. take care of yourself always, and make friends. be kind ok? try not to take someone else’s food.

Last song: The last song I listened to is For Good from the musical, The Wicked. I love this song so much, and the musical as well. I listen to this song last night because I found a fanart of Kurapika and Melody and those two never fail to remind me of this song. Pika and Melody is so much like Elphie and Glinda and their frienship is gold.

Last movie: This is kind of funny because I don't watch movies often. I would love to though if I had the time. The last I think was Ponyo (that was the first time I saw that movie, I'm pathetic I know 😅). It was after Christmas last year and I only got to watch it because I'm on vacation then. Oh, the film is fantastic by the way. I should rewatch that sometime soon.

Currently watching: Hunter x Hunter 2011 (I love the '99 but I have to rewatch the election arc so...)

Currently reading: I'm trying to finish reading The Other Boleyn Girl but I got hooked on A curious incident of a dog at nighttime (which I already read for like 3 times already). While I'm at work and only have my phone with me, I read ebooks instead. I just finished reading Crime and Punishment the other day and I'm currently on Count of Monte Cristo which I also love to read over and over again.

Currently craving: Does sleep count? Just kidding 😄 I would really love my country's version of Shiruko (Japanese red bean soup with mochi). We have a dessert similar to that in my country and my mom used to cook that as afternoon snack. Not really fond of sweets but that certain food reminds me of my mom so it's an exception.

There were 10 things, so I’m gonna list all of them because screw you 

10: Drawing. I’ve been doing a lot of drawing lately after discovering that I do, in fact, have the ability to draw people. And as well as people I’m quite good at drawing animals. More specifically, cats and dragons. Why it’s these two I’m not sure, but I suspect it may have something to do with the fact that the only accurate depictions of dragons are the giant scaly winged fire-breathing cats of the How To Train Your Dragon universe.

9: Chocolate, especially mint chocolate. In February I bought some mint chocolates in a sweet shop in Huddersfield, and they’re so nice. My parents got me a dark chocolate egg with some mint chocolates which was very nice. And for my birthday they gave me a bigger bag of nice mint chocolates from the same chocolate place as the egg. Also last year on a trip to Germany with the school I attend I went to the Lindt Shokoladen Museum in Cologne and got free samples of, and bought about  €20-25 worth of some of the nicest chocolate I’ve ever had. If you’re ever in Cologne for some reason go there. 

8: Studio Ghibli Movies. I’ve loved them since watching Spirited Away when I was young (Maybe 6 or 7) and for a few years my favourite was one called The Cat Returns which has kind of a nonsensical plot but I still really like it. And then they came to Netflix, and oh boy, there could not be a more opportune time for me to be shut in my house. I have watched Ponyo, The Cat Returns, Whisper Of The Heart, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service (twice) and Howl’s Moving Castle, which I watched three times within the course of a week (dear god help me) and there’s still like eight which I am yet to watch.

7: Harry Potter. I have been reading the series and watching the movies and drawing the fan art for nearly 3 years now and I really like these books. My favourite character is Sirius and I am in Hufflepuff and my Patronus is a badger and I can remember all the details of my wand without checking (spruce, 14 1/2 inches, unicorn hair core, quite bendy) and now I have written  a chapter in a fanfic based on the Cursed Child. (which I haven’t even come read or watched and was basing the characterisation entirely on how my friend who is the main author of that fic wrote them). I own a Hufflepuff Quidditch T-shirt, a Hufflepuff hat, 2 Hufflepuff pin badges, a Hufflepuff scarf, a Hufflepuff mug, a Golden Snitch bracelet, and a replica of Newt Scamander’s wand. I have been to the Warner Bros Harry Potter Studio Tour and the Platform 9 3/4 shop at King’s Cross. I own a copy of Quidditch Through The Ages, The Tales of Beedle The Bard, and Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.

6: Doctor Who. I have been watching Doctor Who my whole life. I own 2 sonic screwdriver toys (the ninth and tenth doctors’ and the thirteenth doctor’s) and a miniature Tardis that makes The Noiseᵀᴹ. I have watched every episode since the revival in 2005 and quite a few of the old ones from the 60s and 80s, most of which were the fourth doctor. In bluetooth settings my phone is called The Oncoming Storm in reference to what the Daleks call the Doctor. My phone’s hotspot it titled: Reference Doctor Who For Pass and the password is yet another doctor who reference. I love jelly babies and I will drop a doctor who reference into the conversation at every opportunity. I have taken a photo in front of the Tardis at Earl’s Court Road in London. I have an 11th Doctor notebook and a notebook which is the Tardis. My phone case is also the Tardis.

5: Animals. Reptiles and especially snakes in particular, though I adore cats and rabbits and birds and other such cute animals as well. I’ve loved all things reptiles for months now, since I believe early November. It began when I found this video by Snake Discovery on YouTube. Great channel, highly recommended. After I watched that I looked through their videos and discovered I believe this video of baby Western Hognose snakes hatching. I instantly fell in love. I stopped watching their videos for a while before re-discovering their channel in November, when I fell in love with reptiles all over again. It has now become my biggest life goal to own a hognose snake (as well as wanting to own about 23 other species of reptiles and amphibians at some point in my life, some to a higher degree than others).

4: Watching TV with my parents. Whenever a new series of Doctor Who is airing, get together in front of the telly to watch it. Recently, my dad dug up a few Beatles DVDs and I spent an evening watching Eight Days A Week: The Touring Years with him.

3:  Merlin. More specifically, the fandom. I love looking at gifsets or fan art or fic recs on here. I’ve been watching the show for almost a year now and have technically been in the fandom for longer since I started watching videos of clips from the show on this YouTube channel. I’ve been trapped on Tumblr ever since. Send help. If I have counted correctly, I am on my 4th rewatch of the show. I am in the process of writing a Magic Reveal AU fanfic. I have also tried and failed several times to draw Merlin. I am following every Merlin blog I have found and am subbed to r/merlinbbc and r/bbcmerlinmemes on reddit. I have a sideblog dedicated to All Things Merlinᵀᴹ. Also Colin and Bradley are very wholesome and I love them both.

2: The Beatles. I’ve only been listening to the Beatles’ music for a few months, but I think it’s safe to say that they are my favourite musicians ever. In fact, I’m listening to them right now. There are so many songs that I just really vibe with like I’m Looking Through you or All My Loving or She Loves you or I’m Happy Just To Dance With you or Eight Days A Week, or my personal favourite: Here Comes The Sun, and these are just a few. There’s so many I can’t even name them all. On top of that, interviews with them or little clips of them together are always so much fun to watch because they always have little jokes to make the interviewer laugh and you can tell from the way that they interact in videos that they were such good friends. Also they’re cute so there’s that too. Anyway that’s enough gushing about the Beatles. Moving on.

1: My favourite thing is just to talk to my friends, because I’m lucky enough to have a relatively large group of friends, especially for being the socially awkward teenager that I am. And all of my friends are so nice and they’re always making me laugh or telling me some interesting fact or sharing their interests with me and they’re just overall fun to be around. Once quarantine is over I’m really looking forward to seeing them in person again.

Everytime I tell someone I haven't watched an important pop culture film or show I gotta also remind them that my mom would actually beat us for watching "demonic" stuff.

So Pokémon, Yugi-Oh, Dragon Tales were shows my older brother and I got introuble for.

We couldn't watch Rugrats after a while because Angelica was disobedient to her parents. Couldn't watch Fairly Odd Parents because of magic, but I bet if my mom knew about Butch Hartman she would have let us.

Couldn't watch Harry Potter. When we snuck to watch it at my grandma's, and my mom found out she banned us from going back to grandma's house for almost 2 years.

I got into so much trouble for reading Twilight. And let me tell you despite my mom's best efforts, I was OBSESSED with vampires. Still kinda am. They're my favorite supernatural creature.

I GOT BANNED FROM LISTENING TO AARON CARTER BECAUSE SOMEONE AT MY CHURCH SAID HE STOPPED TALKING TO HIS PARENTS!

Like dude. My mom was super abusive and religious.

The only shit my older brother and I got to watch with no problem was VeggieTales, SuperKids Academy and Bibleman. All Christian shows.

SOME PBS shows as long as my mom thought it was okay. Had to stop watching Postcards from Buster because they showed two lesbian moms ONCE!

Every Saturday ABC has ABC Kids where they'd play Disney Channel reruns in the morning.

We couldn't watch That So Raven because she was a psychic.

Of course was banned from any and ALL Halloween films. My mom even kept us home from school on Halloween every year.

We didn't have cable in my house until I was 17.

Even after a while Power Rangers - WHICH IS A STAPLE OF MY BROTHERS AND MY CHILDHOODS - was banned for violence.

The most fucked up backwards show my older brother and I watched AS KIDS was The Simpsons. Watched it every night before bed. UNTIL my mom heard Homer was going to start officiating gay marriages. Which I don't even think happened.

As far as movies go, we had maybe 50 VHS tapes of various movies that we rewatched hundreds of times. We had this film called Gospel Duck. I recently looked it up and its nightmare inducing.

When DVDs came along the selection opened more but mostly it was Christian films. TONS of VeggieTales. Like we had the LarryBoy boxset.

Then for like a year and a half we had SkyAngel which is Christian cable with the Hallmark channel.

I wasn't allowed to watch PG-13 films until I was 16 AND EVEN THEN I had to have my mom OKAY it.

I didn't watch Jurassic Park until I was 18. I didn't watch all of the Harry Potter films until I was 22.

I have only watched ONE Studio Ghibli film and it was Ponyo.

I didn't watch Hocus Pocus nor Halloween Town until I was 22.

I'm 23 now and I'm so glad I have Disney+ because I've been watching films I missed out on.

Still haven't seen Twitches which I need to get a move on.

My mom is still SUPER restrictive on what we are allowed to watch in her house. Despite my brothers and I being adults. My little brother has a whole job and is going to be 19 in January.

She had a HAYDAY when I told her Rocketman had a gay sex scene. I came out in 2015 and she's still like "ew gay".

So before you flip a shit when someone says they haven't seen a piece of media that means a lot to you, consider they didn't have a choice in missing out. Because I didn't and its been hell trying to catch up.

🎬- Movie/TV/YouTube: I’ve been watching all of the kung fu panda movies,,, love watchin that panda fight hell yeah. Also rewatched all of the Lord of the Rings movies I’ve seen them so many times it’s easy to watch them while i do other things like paint! Also flip between Red vs Blue, the Try Channel and Watcher channels on youtube!

🧶- Craft/Hobby: I’ve been painting more! I have a bunch of acrylic paints I’ve had a good time using, also working on my DND campaign and practicing drawing. I have yarn I want to crochet into a blanket so that’s a new project too!

📖- Story: Honestly... i haven’t been reading so much lately but I’ve been trying to get a bit in here and there. I was reading the Legend of Drizzt series (on the second book now! ) and I’ve got the Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo I’m just starting.

🍲- Recipe/Snack:  me and my sister both cook dinner together and we’ve been trying to branch out! I’m going to make ramen tomorrow, I’m really excited! mostly though just been settling down before I go to sleep with that honey drink from Ponyo! 2 tablespoons of honey, and some cinnamon in warm milk (you can also boil water and add milk if you’re running low, i only add one tablespoon of honey if i want it less sweet)

🏋️‍♀️- Exercise: i really don’t exercise buuuuut I was trying to do some yoga stretches to help me sleep better, and i do sit-ups, push-ups, and squats for 30 seconds when I feel up to it, i dont count how many I do though.

🎲- Game: waiting for animal crossing TOMORROW to play, BUT i’ve been playing the Witcher 3 and playing through the fire emblem three houses dlc. I’m considering replaying dragon age or mass effect again, though honestly I have a lot of games I haven’t played yet and need to get around to.

🎧- Music: i’ve got a lot of music I’ve been flipping between! lot of dropkick murphys and flogging molly, but also hozier and the mountain goats, and a couple musical soundtracks like Six the Musical. though yesterday i was playing the Prince of Egypt and Quest for Camelot soundtracks

🎨- Art: besiiides the drawing and painting ALSO trying to flesh out the various stories i’ve got in my head and build worlds around my OCs, love worldbuilding but I have a hard time focusing on anything but the worldbuilding and end up neglecting the plotlines a lot...

i was tagged by @antarctic-echoes​ & @mametupa​, so here are my answers. Warning: i suck at these things. Sorry. tl;dr: i’ve been told several times i was too much of a realist, too down-to-earth and sadly unable to dream & leave what things actually are aside, and it shows.

1.  what’s your favorite hobby? Er, i don’t really know... anything where i can forget myself?

2.  What’s the movie you hate more than anything? there are several, and probably quite a few i’ve erased from my memory. i don't get why people like Love, Actually so much for instance - so depressing. And others, but i either don’t remember them or don’t want to get flamed, so.

3.  which would you rather be: Ninja or British Spy? And why? i teach English for a living, but i practised a martial art for a few years. No idea, you pick! If the British Spy thing means lots of sex, no thanks. If it means cool fun toys, why not. If the ninja thing means being able to do fancy moves, why not. If it’s about the training that allows me to do that, probably not.

4.  What’s your favorite book of all time? i don’t know. No, really. There are many books i enjoyed, but i’ve learned to be wary of picking them up again for a reread...

5.  If you could go anywhere, whether it be a real or fictional location, where would you go? no idea. Since i’m a very positive person who expects disappointment everywhere, well. Somehow, people think i’m pessimistic; i tend to see this as being realistic. It’s not that i don’t travel or like travelling, it’s just... i’m always keeping in mind it’s just a distraction that barely covers the emptiness of existence ;-) many places sound really great, but then when you’re there’s always that “gah i hate mountain paths” or “crap nearest toilets are far away” or “and now there’s the horrible trip back to look forward to” or “my feet are wet” or “those moving stairs are such a pain” or “the Pegasus galaxy is cool and stuff but i don’t have reliable access to AO3″... you get the idea.

6.  Which would you rather fight?  An angry horse-sized duck or a hundred angry duck-sized horses? depends on what tools / weapons etc i have at my disposal, i’d say? Do i have something that can incapacitate one large thing? or something to outrun small-legged animals for long enough i’d be safe?

7.  If you could have any dinosaur as a pet, which one would you have? i don’t want pets of any sorts. Not that i don’t like animals (i really do!), but i can’t properly care for them; i don’t have the time / space / patience etc. And, while dinosaurs are cool, they’d need a lot, and probably wouldn't be happy in an environment they’re not adapted to.

8. What is your favorite animated movie? er... i really don’t watch a lot of films, animated or otherwise. There are some i’ve enjoyed, and they’re definitely not Disney films. No shade on those who enjoy them, bear in mind i haven’t watched a Disney film since i was a kid, apart from the Lion King on a plane or something and the political undertones and how the way the lady lion’s role was downplayed made me angry (and why do so many of these end on “and they got married, the end”? not the more recent ones, from what i understand?) and also why do these people sing all the time? i... don’t like random singing??? i live in fear of the Lucifer musical ep, and i’m one of like 2 or 3 people who don’t like Lucifer singing stuff. I try to pretend he’s Freddie Mercury when writing him. Regarding anime, i’m probably supposed to say Miyazaki or something because everyone loves his stuff, and... it’s nice, sure. Really. Honestly, young characters have never been my thing - Ponyo was sure cute, i guess? i liked the Kenshin OAV because it mixed great music, anime, trope use etc? Or should i mention The Grave of the Fireflies because it’s all deep and stuff? It’s really good, but i’d never EVER rewatch it. Or perhaps Ghost in the Shell? great Kenji Kawai music there. Haven’t watched any animated film in ages. 

9.  What is your favorite dessert? i generally don’t really like sweet things - i can appreciate them, but one spoonful or two is enough; it’s not really my thing.

10.  what is your movie score? the... number of films i’ve watched? i used to be big on artsy cinema in my younger days, now i can’t stand being still for several hours, surrounded by people potentially munching on crunchy stuff. I’d probably not get a good score (HAHAHA) at most quizzes. to answer the question, the music i’m living to? i do enjoy some film scores - but i like silence more. 

11.  If you could go to dinner with any fictional character, who would you choose and why? no idea. i don’t have anything interesting to say to anyone. i imagine i can pretend for a while, but that’s what i already do most of the time i’m not home, so... i mean, there are many characters i find interesting / fascinating, but i don’t fit in their world or they don’t fit in mine. How would that work? Am i a lowly ensign on the (original) Enterprise? What am i supposed to talk about with Tony Stark and his buddies? i guess i could just stare moodily at a beer bottle while Methos looks all cool and liquid on the chair next to me, he’s probably one of those people who won’t mind silence too much? It would be rude to pester him about what he’s lived through. Maybe ask where he gets his sweaters, they look comfy. Not Lucifer, because i’m not the Detective (or in her orbit) / a pretty young thing / a good singer. I can drink? But i don’t know what to do with myself in a club, so.  and now from @mametupa​: 1. Which is your favorite holiday and why?  As a rule, i dislike holidays. It’s uncomfortable, i don’t particularly want to see most of my family, and it all feels forced. Of course i do know that for some people it’s a joyous time, but be it Xmas / Easter / birthdays whatever, it’s... not my thing. Sorry.

2. What is your favorite food to cook or eat?  i’m easy either way. A few years ago i used to cook with a friend. We became estranged, and now i don’t really cook anymore - i mean, i still cook everything myself everything i eat (including bread or yoghurts) but since then i’ve lost the taste and it’s all very utilitarian; fuel so i don’t faint at the gym or at work. i don’t really care, but i’m okay with or at least will try almost anything. Really.

3. If you had to live in the body of someone else, who would it be? Er, no one. Honestly, and that’s not a fun answer, but i’d rather not exist at all. Bodies are hard work (plus luck) to maintain reasonably healthy and, worse, in what is considered “good shape.” Besides, some that really look good are actually not good at all inside, not all diseases / pains are visible.

4. Favorite season? spring makes me sneeze, summer is too hot, winter is that horrible holiday period, so i guess autumn? i do like red colours on leaves (but i live in a city, so don’t see them much like on those nice autumn moodboards with pretty forests)?

5. If someone wrote a book about you, what would the title be? that won’t happen :-)

6. Favorite childhood book? i was a voracious reader until lit studies made me quit reading for a few years, so i read a lot as a child. I kept ideas, feelings, one little thing from many books, but i don’t think there’s ONE book that made me go THIS ONE. sorry.

7. Favorite smell? i don’t know. Wet forest? Fresh bread? Fireplace? What is one supposed to answer?  Definitely not perfumes or flowers, i’d sneeze and my eyes would become liquid or something.

8. What different languages do you speak or understand? French, English. I used to be good at Spanish, and i can (especially after a few days of resetting the brain bits) cope. My grammar and vocab are all shot to hell but i can definitely get by; i understand people enough to enjoy guided tours & stuff and get food and a hotel and get directions to park the car. For some reason i now have an English accent whenever i try to speak Spanish (i once said “nos quedamos ten minutos” sounding like a posh XIX lady and the friend i was travelling with was laughing like a loon. She had to repeat what i said to me). i’d like to learn Arabic, because it’s different and the grammar and sounds and writing and word etc are both alien to what i’m used to and yet a source of the languages i’ve learned before, so. i did Latin and Ancient Greek loooong ago, and well it was useful to read street signs in Greece and St Petersburg (i’d brushed up on the Russian alphabet just in case).

9. Favorite era?  they’re all interesting, past and present and future. The way some categories of people are / were treated tends to make me run away, though - women, sexual or racial or or or minorities, slavery, you name it. Nowhere, nowhen is 100% a haven.

10. What 5 things would you want to have with you if you were marooned on an uninhabited tropical island? i don’t know if the Internet counts, i guess i could tell people i’m stranded with it, so maybe not? If it doesn’t, no idea. i guess i should say useful stuff like, i don’t know. A fridge with electricity? A survival handbook? A fully-stocked house (with furniture) with electricity? or a means to kill myself as painlessly as possible?

11. One thing that you would never throw away? i don’t know. something useful? Or trousers, perhaps? i hate being naked. But a knife is always useful? Probably? i tend to not throw away stuff BUT i don’t *get* a lot of new stuff either (unless it’s polish, but even there i’ve slowed down because it has to be really special to catch my eye now). i don’t have 11 questions to ask people, but if anyone wants to pick among the many that have been asked before, feel free.
