i do think it's interesting to think about how a lot of the time when people analyze queer couples in fandom that even when talking about like. f/f couples and the way that fandoms treat them but then kind of just... don't look at a lot of very popular f/f ships just because they're not in super mainstream (or even just like. popular with the tumblr/twitter/tiktok crowds) media. like when analyzing fan reaction and gathering around f/f why have i never once seen people discuss things like madohomu or rarijack or utenanthy or [INSERT BASICALLY ANY SHIP FROM AN ANIMUSIC FANDOM HERE.] there are substantial fanbases built around these ships and they're practically unavoidable if you interface with these properties and while i do think there's a lot to analyze in the fact that nearly all of them come from specifically media where a majority if not just the entirety of the cast are women there's also just like? so much going on wrt the fan culture that these ships have that it's just like crazy to me to see these like never getting mentioned in video essays

The Anime Binge-Watcher's Queer Anime Ship Tournament: Round 1 Results!

The first round has come to an end, and what a round it was! Huge blowouts, shocking reversals, hard choices, and many worthy opponents struck down by even worthier ones before they even got a chance to shine. This is already proving exactly as chaotic as I'd hoped, and I couldn't be more proud of y'all for it. So before we head on to round 2, here's a breakdown of how all the match-ups went and the most dramatic moments!

Most Voted Poll: Far and away the poll with the most votes was Bumbleby vs ToukoYuu, with a staggering 797 votes! No surprises there; both these ships are true all-timers with incredibly passionate fanbases who battled back and forth until the Bloomers pulled into a lead the RWBYheads just couldn't make up. But it was a well-fought battle! Second place goes to ChisaTaki vs MadoHomu with an equally impressive 698 votes, and NanoFate vs KobaTohru pulled an impressive third place with 497 votes.

Least Voted Poll: In a shock I didn't see coming, KukuFuuka vs KumiRei came in last with a measly 164 votes. I guess it's no surprise more people haven't heard of the criminally underrated Aquatope, but Kumirei??? One of the beloved gay ships in all of 2010s anime and so few people turned out for it? The mind just boggles, I tell ya. Second place goes to CocoPapi vs The Doukyuusei Boys with just 183, with AoiHina vs YukiTouya coming just behind with a 188 vote third place.

Biggest Blowout: Meanwhile, in the complete opposite of a shock, UtenAnthy absolutely demolished Ymir x Historia with a staggering 90.2% to 9.8% victory. Listen, I love my Attack on Titan girls, but they never stood a chance against one of the founding titans of queer anime love stories. Ditto poor ShamiMomo who went up against the newly crowned patron saint of anime lesbians SuleMio and got stomped 87.1% to 12.9% in second place. Compared to them, YukiTouya's third place finish against AoiHina with 74.5% to 25.5% doesn't seem like much, does it?

Closest Nail-Biter: In another big shock for me, the blowout victory I expected for NanoFate turned into the narrowest of losses against Kobayashi x Tohru, 50.5% to 49.5%- only a single percentage apart! Clearly, I underestimated how powerful the dragon lesbians have become in the years since their arrival. Kase x Yamada also just barely eked out a win against ReoMabu with a 51.2% to 48.8% second place finish. Third place went to Aoi Hana vs RekiLanga with a narrow 54.8% to 45.2% victory for RekiLanga.

As for me personally? Believe it or not, it was almost a perfect split! 9 of my picks made it through while the other 7 fell short. I'm shocked how close that ended up! Hopefully I'll have better luck in round 2, yeah? So gird your loins, everyone, cause the next round of voting will start very shortly!

I understand you think that catradora and vrisrezi are both finalist contenders, people said the same thing about the Cherik vs. thoschie poll, the KomaHina vs. Akeshu poll, and the madohomu vs. akiryo poll. This tournament also have obikin, Jedas, utenanthy, Hannigram, and narusasu. At least half of the setlists are pairs who deserves seeding. In which case. What's the point of seeding? (And to add to this, if I did chose to seed, I wouldn't have expected to seed catradora or vrisrezi... Cause my perception is biased due to my circle, so despite my abundant love for both pairs, I didn't even consider them to be finalist contenders when setting up the matchups.)

Depending on which circle you're from, people have very different opinions on what's finalist material. I want the competition to be exciting, which is why I deliberately grouped overlapping fandoms first (to the best of my knowledge), so they actually have a chance to face off each other before either is eliminated, and fans of both series gets to make real decisions instead of just picking whatever they know.

This means every fan should feel like "but they're both finalist materials".

Anyway. Second round pairings should be more unexpected with more odd genre blends! So have fun!

a few years ago tho, i used to be MAD madohomu trash (they're from puella magi madoka magica for anyone that's curious). i also watched revolutionary girl utena a veryyyy long time ago and it traumatized me and was also my gay awakening so shout out to utenanthy for that kjdfhkjhf i also think elliedina from the last of us 2 are pretty neat! avatrice from warrior nun is also very rad, and i read a lot of fics for them in like december/januaryish but tbh didn't like the show much outside of the ship lol . i did really like wenclair when wednesday came out, but i'm not like. die hard crazy for them since i kinda like aroace wednesday hehe aaaand yeah.

honestly, i really just apply what i already know about toxic doomed yuri to kieflo, ( there's a reason why i've compared them to madohomu & utenanthy before. ) and i'm not sure if there's a kieflo mutuals circle currently, i'm just vibing out here rn. i do have a mutual who's also into candyapple / tealmask so i'd recommend following solis ( @rivalkieran ) if you're interested in kielfo content, the stuff they make for them ( and their pokéverse in general ) is so fantastic!

*sigh* super sad to see wlw ships constantly lose out to mlm ships. part of it is understandable because a lot of these mlm ships come from really popular media and thus have a much larger fandom. it's still sad though. but something i want to say to some of the people reblogging. please think about what you say in the tags. i know polls like these can get heated because we're all passionate about our ships but insulting other shippers/ships is a really good way to alienate people who are neutral towards both/people who like both but can't decide. i've participated in a lot of polls and seen a lot of people spite vote solely based on not liking the attitudes of some shippers. madohomu and utenanthy were really close to winning against two VERY popular ships. as frustrating as it is maybe try and keep in mind that the things you say may also be losing us votes.
