so me and two friends were deciding what monster hunter monsters would post on facebook
Rathalos: posts "I hate my wife" memes everyday and tries to recapture his lost glory, because he still thinks he runs the architectural company he made with his wife and is very self-centered about the fact he's still technically the face of the company, even though he chose to not go on with the times when his wife did, leading to him not helping the company at all nowadays and everyone just tolerating him so they can enjoy his wife's presence (and her flips)
Rathian: posts about her architectural achievements and is the kind of person that posts live laugh love posts unironically. nobody really knows why she still tolerates Rathalos, but she really thinks she can fix him and that there's something beautiful inside him that if she just tries, she can get through to his good parts. thinks all the "I hate my wife" memes are just jokes. really fun at parties
Zinogre: posts about going to the gym and pictures of him flexing everyday, is super into cars because he can power his electric cars by himself. he's also very big into entomology. will go on rants about the "cars" movies if you let him because he hates how unrealistic it is
Gammoth: doesn't post anything on her own facebook page and doesn't check what any of her friends are doing on it but but runs the lesbian monster community page
Tigrex: posts conservative far-right propaganda and the wildest conspiracy theories youve ever heard, and is also every type of -phobe you can think of. posts pictures of him that have sunglasses and really big jeeps badly photoshopped onto them
Mizutsune: posts almost exclusively about anything gay pride related and uses his page as a curated gay art gallery. dunks on tigrex's posts whenever he can. takes pictures of himself while hes taking a bubble bath and reposts bath bomb videos.
Glavenus: was an edgelord sword-lover when he was a kid and posted about swords and skulls and motorcycles n shit. he took a break from social media in his teens to become an apprentice blacksmith. now middle-aged and is an accomplished blacksmith that posts about his craft whenever he can. still also posts about swords a lot.
Astalos: uses his personal facebook page for curating like a music gallery for music he likes, of any genre. hes a beginner guitar player that posts himself playing a lot. hes not very good but hes trying goddammit. also runs a music sharing community page.
Seregios: uses his page exclusively to provoke people and to post inflammatory stuff. especially likes getting a rise out of rathalos and tigrex, and also astalos because all you have to say to astalos to get him angry is tell him his taste in music sucks
Yian Garuga: self-proclaimed "metrosexual". posts dick pics and gym selfies of himself that no one wants to see except nargacuga. gasses up nargacuga's posts and sees it like a "bro thing" when he does it. he's very confused sexually and everyone knows that except him
Nargacuga: the resident gamer. posts videos of him playing video games extremely well and also posts pictures of himself in thigh highs and has a very e-girl kinda energy. very openly flirts with yian garuga under his posts but yian garuga doesnt get it
The Greats and the Dromes: all of them exclusively post in an nsfw community where all they do is share nsfw around. they use facebook for nothing else
Zamtrios: is a very successful mukbang and asmr creator. at the end of every mukbang hes inflated and he uses his inflated state to make asmr videos with the sounds coming from it. this was very weird to type out
Deviljho: dentist that reposts his tiktoks about dental health on his facebook page. his videos give out a very sinister and uncomfortable vibe even though he just sincerely wants to help people with their dental health. he also wants their teeth but he tries to fight that urge
Diablos: ex-trucker with anger issues that has a very thick southern american accent and got fired after wasting millions of dollars in company assets and causing one of the worst pile-ups in history. posts mainly about trucks, guns, and pretending he still has a job. surprisingly not as right-wing as you might think. probably has a grindr
Gold Rathian and Silver Rathalos: its them after couples therapy. they run their architectural facebook page together now after rathalos got over his inferiority complex. youd think him being silver and her being gold wouldve made his inferiority complex worse but the story about it is that he chose silver so rathian could get gold and thats his way of saying he wants his wife to be in the spotlight willingly this time
Ahtal-Ka: shes just a very sweet tailor that posts about her sewing and knitting projects to her facebook page and posts tutorials for stuff. big fan of kaiju movies and also bionicles, and she posts about her custom bionicles a lot too
Lagiacrus: has a huge catalog of fish she's fished up and streams herself fishing every day. has multiple world records in fishing achievements
Teostra, Amatsu, and Bazelgeuse: all of them use their facebook pages for furthering their political agendas for becoming president. teostra is far-right, amatsu is like centrist left, and bazelgeuse is the communist party
Seltas and Seltas Queen: seltas queen is a dommy mommy that posts bdsm videos with like 30 different seltas on a regular basis. the seltas dont actually do anything related to the account but they get paid to be there so theyre technically part of it
Valstrax: facebook comedian. has incredible comedic timing. is Jerma985 (bullfango-kelbi hybrid mix)
Nakarkos: really fucking old dude that talks about war history too much and posts videos of like american wars talking about how "kids nowadays with their darn phones that arent dying for our country"
Brachydios: owner of a very prolific demolition company who films buildings going down for clout on facebook. pays his employees surprisingly well. definitely got into legal trouble for demolishing non-condemned buildings before
Chameleos: runs one of those life hack content farms that post incredibly unhelpful, possibly untrue, sometimes dangerous life hacks for clout. no one actually knows he runs the account though. he definitely does it just because he thinks its funny
Nerscylla: really old lady that doesnt know how to use electronics and types her google searches into facebook and reposts videos of plants while saying something like "These are so wonderful!" to everything she sees that she likes
Shagaru Magala: christian parent thats a megachurch pastor and a televangelist. posts nothing but bible verses on her account and tells you that youre going to hell every single day of their life. gave her kid religious trauma
Gore Magala: depressed zoomer that listens to hyperpop and breakcore and lives off of monster energy and weed. got fucked up from shagaru constantly telling them that if they dont grow up right theyre gonna end up a chaotic gore and that has stuck with them for the rest of their life. just posts a lot of self-deprecating humor and vaguely worrying memes.
Kushala Daora: oppenheimer/amatsu's biggest fan. self proclaimed "centrist political analyst" that just so happens to agree with like every dictator and warmonger in history. will go out of their way to argue under the posts of like anyone thats left-leaning. loves seeing other people in pain.
Malfestio: blue-collar office worker that has no dreams in its life. posts like hypnosis videos on facebook that like are actually super popular but he doesnt feel like he can make a living off of it so he hasn't even tried yet
Duramboros: the activist. goes out and protests like every good cause out there. posts about charities and parades that are going on around. grows vegetables on its back to feed homeless people

THE GREAT MONSTER HUNTER RANKING! Part 4
For this part, we get to what have been referred to as rites of passage for up and coming hunters. The definitive Wyverns of this world. The Flying Wyverns. They are, for the most part, what you might think of when you hear "wyvern". Big draconic beasts with big wings and occasionally the ability to breathe fire.
But for this ranking part, we're going to skip a generation for a bit. You see, the second generation split the Flying Wyverns into two groups. The True Flying Wyverns, and the Pseudo Flying Wyverns, the latter of which we will look at right now. They're "flyers" that don't do a lot of flying. They look like they could, but they either can't or just choose not to most of the time, instead going for a more terrestrial lifestyle. That doesn't make them any less powerful. If anything, some are way stronger than their flying counterparts...
The Pseudo Flying Wyverns:

"He screm."
We start with one Hell of a monster. Tigrex is exactly what its title implies: A T-Rex with stripes like a tiger and it's also a ground-dwelling wyvern. I can appreciate it for how in-your-face badass its concept is. I particularly like how they keep animating its signature move, which is just it charging at you again and again. Something about the way its forelimbs SLAM into the ground with each step as it barrels at you at full speed and ready to bite/spin around scratches an itch in my head. But its OTHER signature move deserves attention, too. It can roar so loudly that anyone close to it gets immediately damaged. The only thing that brings it down for me a bit is that fighting this lightning bruiser...isn't always that fun. Most of the fight I feel is spent running for your life while getting tossed around by almost every attack. Still, it's a fight that can be won with enough effort, and I can understand why this thing's nickname is "Absolute Power". 7.5/10.

"Hey, I don't remember this part of 'The Jungle Book'!"
Nargacuga is like the Tigrex, except it traded its raw strength for pure finesse and agility. It's already a fun concept, being a panther/dragon/parrot beast that's also a ninja/shinobi, but then there's its fighting style. Narg strikes fast with its blade-like wings, spike-like scales on its barbed tail (that it can fire from a distance, no less), and of course, some charging. Also, its eyes glow red whenever it gets enraged. There's a lot to like here, and I dare say Narg's a lot more interesting (and less of a chore to fight) than Tigrex. AND it got one of the better theme music glow-ups in Rise. Those vocals go a long way. 8.5/10.

"Joe vs. the Volcano 2: The Volcano is Alive Now"
The generation that gave us Pseudo Flying Wyverns threw in a positively absurd monkey wrench in the works with two HUGE additions similar in build/power, but very different in locale. Yes, this monstrous tusked titan known as the Akantor is a "Flying Wyvern", despite not even having anything close to wings for arms! It's kind of frustrating, really. I mean, this beast and his frosty foil (we'll get to him next) have power comparable to Elder Dragons, so what made them chicken out?!
Well, maybe it could fly at some point before evolution stepped in. But for now, this guy okay. He's trying a little too hard to be cool, and those tusks are kind of distracting for me. But he's got the size and cool armored hide to make up for it. Also, he's got a bit in common with the Tigrex with his preference for charge attacks, and even having a roar so loud it acts as a sort of concentrated beam of sound that can spell doom for long-range hunters. I can see why people call this thing the Black God. 7/10.

"Ladies and gentlemen...Shovel Chin."
Akantor is the demonic beast of fire. Ukanlos is the ethereal being of ice. That being said, while Akantor has those big tusks as a rather distracting aspect for me, the Ukanlos has a chin almost perfectly shaped like a spade. Despite this, I vibe with the snow beast a bit more. There's something surprisingly satisfying how it doesn't need so many bells and whistles all over its body compared to the fire guy, and it's got some cool ice powers on top of being so huge (and yes, it too can hurt people with its roar). Also, its theme music is superior to that of its counterpart. The way it begins sends chills (HA!) every time. 7.5/10.

"Can't make heads or tails of this abomination."
There's a True Flying Wyvern that came before this one, and to this day, no one can tell if it's more disturbing than the Gigginox. How this thing isn't more popular in the community is a mystery to me. Yeah sure, it's not a sight for sore eyes, but it's just so unique! It's got the crawling abilities of a gecko, cool glowing purple eyes adorned with white markings, and at each end is a mouth like a leech, with the posterior mouth constantly laying eggs that hatch into smaller blood-sucking Gigi. Okay, all of that sounds a little disgusting, especially since this creature can swallow you whole while producing poison, but it's the kind of disgusting that segues into weirdness you can't take your eyes off of. Less Khezu and more Gigginox, please! 8/10.

"Huh, 'Ice Age 10' veered off into an unexpected direction."
The Barioth exists to remind me what I love so much about this franchise. The wholesale embracing of prehistory to create new and unique monsters to terrorize the player. In this case, the inspiration should be pretty obvious. It's a Smilodon-dragon! With sabres colored like amber! And it's just as nimble as the Nargacuga it's related to. I also love the way its armor is designed, with that spiked tail and those spiked wings (which help it maintain balance on the ground) and man is this thing cool or what?! Plus, it can summon blizzard tornadoes. It's almost absurd how much this cat dragon kicks ass. 8.5/10.
NOW, we can get to the meat of this part. The flyers that actually, you know, fly for more than five seconds at best.
The True Flying Wyverns:

"Malewife and girlboss, together at last."
Ah, the mascot of the entire franchise, the Rathalos. And his female counterpart, the Rathian. I put them together because they're basically the same breed, just with some very noticeable sexual dimorphism.
I must say, there's a reason the red guy is the face of these games. It's imposing, it's vibrant, and it gives you a good idea of the majority of beasts you'll be up against. For me, the most striking aspect of this monster is the black markings on its wings that almost look like some sort of tribal paint. It evokes the image of a great warrior, at least in my opinion.
Rathian is a more land-based fighter, though she can very much fly. Anyone who's played one or two of the games can tell you about her infamous "fitness grand pacer test" move, in which she charges, pauses, and charges again, rinse wash and repeat. But like her mate, she likes to use poison, and lots of it. Her design has a few noticeable differences. She traded the wing patterns for a spike-goatee and sharp protofeathers on her body. That's neat!
All in all, I feel that these two shouldn't be talked about separately. They're a package that feels incomplete without one or the other. Rathalos rules the skies while rearing the kids, Rathian patrols the land for food and intruders. It's great! 8/10.

"This is the best theme music ever!"
Remember the Gigginox from earlier? Yeah, meet its more popular predecessor. The Khezu is infamous for being one of the most unsettling monsters, nay, THINGS, to come from this franchise. Its skin is pale and at times looks like exposed flesh, its extendable neck terminates in an eyeless mouth like a lamprey's, and it can crawl on walls while utilizing electrical powers. But if you want my honest opinion, this thing is at its most unsettling when it doesn't open its mouth. Its lips are curved in just the right way that it looks to have an unsettling smile on its face at all times (though it's maybe a little cute when it starts to sniff around). Oh, and there's no music when you fight it. Just the eerie silence occasionally broken by its alarmingly wrathful roar. Altogether, it's a memorable one, but not necessarily because you want to be around it for very long. 7/10.
(And YES, I know what its head looks like. NO, you don't have to tell me!)

"Notice me...please..."
I recall saying that absence makes the heart go yonder when it comes to monsters getting their reappearances stalled. The Monoblos is a special case, in which it hasn't come back precisely because there's something out there that can do its job but better. And that sucks because it's by no means a bad monster. It's a great monster! The concept of using Ceratopsians as the basis for monsters is a brilliant one. And this guy got a really unique basis in the form of the one-horned Styracosaurus. It's also got a club like an Ankylosaur for good measure. And while it's called a Flying Wyvern and even looks the part, it prefers to fly through the sand and attack foes from below. A neat monster, for sure! 7/10.

"Temper-ceratops"
The monster that kicked Monoblos to the side is its harder, more savage relative. The Diablos. That name is already awesome, but there's more to this guy than that. It has the same body build as the Mono, albeit its head is that of a sharp-toothed Triceratops, and its club is way bulkier. And the funny thing is, despite having all those sharp teeth, it feasts on nothing more than cacti. Raw cacti. A tough-as-nails meal for a tough-as-nails beast. What make the Diablos so notable for me isn't its looks, but its roar. This guy has my favorite roar in the entire franchise for how much wrath and ferocity it conveys in a unique way. Other than that, like its predecessor, it's a mostly standard bullfight boss with a design that certainly doesn't pound sand (though it can very much do that).
NOW, usually I don't talk about Subspecies/Variants/Deviants or whatever. I see them as mostly just reskins/recolors that are occasionally fun to fight. It's just that Diablos has a particular Deviant that stands out compared to the rest (the Black variant is just a female going into violent heat, which is still interesting).

This edgelord mistake of nature is the Bloodbath Diablos (or it's way better Japanese title, the Massacre Demon Diablos). It got that way because of, I kid you not, a lousy childhood. When Diablos are juveniles, losing a horn so early is a death sentence. But such a thing can only happen if a human hunter does it. Should a Diablos survive this, it has the chance to let its rage and violent hatred of humans completely take over, malforming its healed horn and empowering it to the point where its body can superheat and create steam with enough fury. Those blue highlights? That's dried-up blood from its near-mindless rampages. And it'll add more to itself the moment it even suspects that humans are nearby, taking them out with a much more fast-paced and psychotic take on the typical Diablos fighting style.
Sheesh.
8/10.

"It's not just a boulder...it's a rock!"
Once again, we have two monsters that are really just a part of the same species. In this case, it's what happens when you don't account for the kid you picked on in school once. Basarios is the dumpy odd-faced juvenile at the top. And it fights by rolling around and spraying either fire or sleeping/poison gas from its underside. Its camouflage as a big boulder is nice...but it's just sort of dumb-looking overall.
THEN it grows up, and turns into the bigger, sturdier, and much more imposing Gravios. It too can emit those gasses, but it also has a wicked hide studded with spikes, it's one of the heaviest Flying Wyverns around, and it can even fire a beam of concentrated heat from its mouth. And yes, it can fly, but only for short intervals. In fact, it'll take advantage of this by flying upwards...and then plummeting down like a rock to squash you flat.
I can't even deduct a point for how AWFUL it was to have my weapons bounce off its hide all the time in Generations: Ultimate. Gravios is an alright fellow. 7/10.

"What is this? PINE-CONES!"
I'm not gonna lie, Seregios didn't quite grab me at first. It's a flyer that's way smaller than the average big wyvern, gold just isn't my color, and it has a bad habit of becoming an invasive species on a whim. But it's a unique beast, I'll give it that. It fights with razor-sharp talons, a razor-sharp beak/horn, and most prominently, it can fire its razor-sharp scales at foes and inflict the Bleed status ailment. But I don't know, I just think I'd like this monster a lot more if that imposing head wasn't stuck to such a tiny body almost specifically modeled after a chicken of all things, complete with stubby wingspan. Plus, I feel bad for every Rathian this species seems to love to antagonize. 6/10.

"You're gonna need a bigger bug net."
You probably remember me grousing about how this franchise keeps shirking the chance to include more large insect monsters. Well, turns out most of my big bug needs have been met by a Flying Wyvern of all things.
The Astalos is, hands down, one of the coolest monsters in the whole franchise. It's a near-perfect blend of reptilian might and insectoid weirdness all rolled into one beautiful package. More specifically, it's based on the glasswing butterfly, as evidenced by its translucent wings. Those beautiful glowing wings, bug-like legs, and that tail ending with a pair of scissor-like mandibles make for one unique image! But Astalos doesn't just get by with amazing looks. You see, this wyvern is so insanely aggressive that it can pulsate its headcrest and wings to the point where they generate an obscene amount of green electricity. This electricity empowers the beast so that it can fire electric energy balls, summon pillars of lightning, and slam its wings into the ground like they were fists in a violent electric flurry of punches. The drawbacks are that the most supercharged body parts are extra-vulnerable, and Astalos is a glass cannon overall, dealing lots of damage but not necessarily taking a whole lot. I say that makes for a fair but still intense fight!
Oh, and its theme music is one of the few to incorporate an electric guitar. And it's awesome!
What else can I say? 10/10.

"I think this guy ate some poison oak before taking off."
Even when some monsters aren't my cup of tea, I can greatly admire them for the creativity on display. Case in point, the Paolumu. When I first saw this unusual thing, my first thought went to "giant tent-making bat". And that's just what it looks like. A giant flying tent-making bat with the tail of a beaver that can puff itself up like a balloon. That intro cutscene almost had me bursting out laughing at how it just looks like a floating orb with a pouty face at first...before it unveils its nasty teeth. And that floating? It's perfect for gaining air and slamming into the ground to flatten foes. And it makes for good protection if something gets its jaws around the neck. Not my favorite, but I love how out of the box it is. 7/10.

"NOT. SINGING. THE OVERDONE. DISNEY SONG."
Sigh...Legiana could have been one of the greats. An ice-based flyer with talons like a raven and cool frills that are based on, of all things, the Glaucus Atalanticus, an incredibly unusual yet beautiful type of sea slug with many other aliases (that's also poisonous, so fair warning). And you can see that here, too! But my problem is that they didn't go all the way with it. The head looks more like a hawk, and while its back is colored like its inspiration, its front is instead an unappealing yellowish brown. If it had been white or literally some other vibrant color, I would have let it slide. But that and its head shape just make me think of the wasted potential. A flying sea slug wyvern would have been a slam dunk for a 10/10. Sadly, the disappointment knocks this otherwise okay wyvern to a 5/10.

"Sound the alarm! Wait, IT IS THE ALARM!"
Up to World, players would have to worry about an invasive monster known as the Deviljho popping up out of nowhere to ruin their quests. But at least that guy couldn't fly...but this nomadic invader sure can!
The Bazelgeuse is a knock-out monster, I'll say! It's entire motif is split between that of a lion (the face, the "mane" that makes up most of its head, its armor set) and a bomber plane. Yes, a bomber plane. And like such, its roar sounds like a bass-boosted air raid siren, and it carpet bombs wherever it goes. How? Well, those "scales" dangling from the underside of its head and tail aren't actually scales. They're a volatile substance the beast secretes that hardens into the shape of scales upon being exposed to the atmosphere, which then drop to the ground and blow up after a good few seconds and/or if something touches them. And like an absolute madman, the Bazelgeuse will coat the land in these scales before detonating them itself by CRASH-LANDING STRAIGHT INTO WHERE IT LAID THEM. Make no mistake, this is a monster that lives for the fight. And we love it for that. Plus, its theme music sounds like something you'd hear in a film about planes fighting each other in a war (with Rise providing the best version, of course). 9/10.

"....WAKE!!! UP!!!"
And once again, we have ourselves an immigrant from Frontier, a little while after its servers closed down forever. And not too surprisingly, it's one of the more grounded designs. Espinas, at first, appears to be a typical Flying Wyvern, albeit one covered in a vibrant array of thorn-like spikes that contribute to a major rose motif. But aside from neat aesthetics, its charm comes from its nature. Every Espinas quest begins with you finding the beast...and it's fast asleep. Yup, this is a huge monster that would prefer to doze off and ignore the chaos of the world around it (so it's the most relatable monster to date). Alas, if you want to beat it, you gotta wake it up. This can take a number of hits before the Espinas finally decides to make short work of the thing keeping it from its beauty sleep (though I heard that it was funnier in Frontier in that it STILL would ignore attacking hunters for a while after waking up). And boy howdy, most creatures regret pissing off this gentle giant so much. It is unique in how it's a double threat: it can spit fireballs that inflict burning damage AND poison at the same time. In fact, the poison that supposedly tips its thorns ensures that if something pricks itself on them while its snoring, it can wake up to a free paralyzed meal. Plus, an awake Espinas is powerful enough to stand against Elder Dragons and drive them off! And suddenly, it becomes obvious why few Frontier monsters make it to the mainline games. That lineup is complete insanity for the most part, and Espinas is somehow the tamest of them all for the most part. 8/10.
And there go the Flying Wyverns! Next up, we take a look at the creatures best suited for the water in the form of the Piscine Wyverns, Amphibians, and the Leviathans!

Neopterons, Carapaceans, Temnocerans

After putting it off, I'm finally about to finish my 2nd file on MHS2! Mild spoilers for this game's final fight.
I...just went balling really hard in my first file and brought along whatever genes on my Monsties, but this time I tried to make a more decent build.

Aa promised, I'm again taking the first Kulu you get in the game because nothing is funnier, or more awesome than ending a calamity-bringing monster by having a desert chicken slap it. I gave Kulu Bubbly Dance +2 and Belly Guard+2 for a more defensive build because Oltura has nasty AoE attacks.
It's already useful having Bubbly Dance+2 since its evade lasts for two turns, as can be seen in this vid (Ochre used Bubbly dance the turn before)
The attack genes ARE weak lol, but my priority here was that my dear Ochre had attack genes for all three types that are low-cost, so I can swap to him and do Double Attacks any time.

I'm also taking my Pukei-Pukei this time too, since I always regretted I wasn't able in the final boss fight in my first file (my two Tech monsters then were Kulu and Mizu - I resisted the urge to take Mizu again, because I wanna make Pukei-Pukei shine, but I couldn't help but put a Lagiacrus in my team).
I went with a heavy poison focus, which probably isn't all that smart, and I guess I could have removed the Antivenom and Insomniac genes for something more useful so....yeah, still kinda doing whatever as far as actual build-making goes, but I always played MH for fun.
Now to absolutely humiliate Oltura with my bird wyverns. I'm also taking Ranmar this time! So my final team is Ratha and Lagiacrus for Power, a Tigrex and Velocidrome for Speed, and Kulu and Pukei-Pukei for tech.
In my previous file, I also had Ratha and Lagiacrus for Power, a Rathian and Barioth for Speed, and Kulu and Mizu for Tech.
...probably should have gone with a Ludroth this time but too late to make a proper build for my Royal Ludroths now...I already put off finishing this file so long.
#mh stories#monster hunter stories 2#mhs2#finally my kulu ya ku can taste elder dragon blood#i promised my little chicken son that boss fight and he will get it#i never know what genes to use on ratha tho :/

I love Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate so god damn much. Even beyond the nostalgia of it being my first experience with my favourite series of games, it does so much right for the Monster Hunter experience and has the least glaring flaws. I love the maps. I love the monsters. I love the weapon movesets. I love the aestetic. I love Moga village. I love the farm system. Water combat is pretty flawed as is, but is still fun if you stick to a couple of the weapons and is already close to being amazing.
There are some bits from Tri and Portable 3rd missing though - Loc Lac, World Eater Deviljho, slightly smoother controls (the window to dodge after an attack is surprisingly short and leaves you open if you miss it) medium bowgun, and the more mellow aesthetic from Tri are lost, along with Tigrex, Akantor, Ukanlos, and Amatsu not making an appearance. Would also have been nice if Neko could let you visit Yukumo for fun

Started this doodle a little over a month back when I was trying to get things "out", left it nearly finished (for what that's worth at my skill level) and decided to just finish the lovely guy today.
I sketched out a couple poses before settling as I found it incredibly difficult to present what I had envisioned. By the end I settled on this snoozin' on his side approach.
Molten Tigrex is undeniably one of my favorite monsters in all of monhun.
So it turned out when I was feeling at my worst and wanted to get thoughts- any thoughts at all- out, after a few pieces I decided to just put out something I enjoy. Something positive, to me.
Considering how simple he can appear on paper, when you were "there" progressing through a new monhun and tackling him he felt like an incredible achievement of what monhun's systems could do to make a fun fight.
Namely, I think of Molten Tigrex whenever I think of how much older monhuns created "organic phases" to each fight.
For a lot of players who primarily experienced Monhun through Iceborne the idea of "phases" in monhun has a very different connotation.
Now-a-days it's natural to think of phases in monhun the same way you'd think of them in an RPG encounter or an MMO fight, namely, because that's what they often are now.
In older monhun phases weren't so often pre-defined, and instead phases were born from the integrated energy and aggression mechanics that each monster was made to follow.
These are mechanics that have not died off, and the terms within will sound extremely familiar because of that. Enrage. Exhaustion. Un-enraged.
Very simple ideas, so simple that in (as of typing) modern monhuns (Ice/Sun) it's easy to ignore these states almost entirely, only ever paying attention if a specific monster has a specific gimmick in a state (like Rajang's differing immunities to traps depending on state).
This is in part because modern monhun is undeniably faster, so why slow down to appreciate these details when all it means is "dodge faster sometimes"? With the added mobility of our hunters, and not just with our legs but our newfound ability to easily use items or sharpen without 30 miles of safe space around you, you don't NEED to focus on such things as much.
But it's also because modern monhuns have incorporated a few mechanics that have nearly deleted these states from the game, primarily Iceborne's clutch claw introducing a means to perma-enrage monsters, thus deleting 2 out of the 3 states you'd ever see that monster in.
In the older games these things were slightly more important- though I won't go lying saying they were something you were 100% dialed into 24/7, just that it wasn't uncommon for you to take a mental note if they were enraged, standard, or exhausted before you used an item- for your own safety.
This created a natural phasing to fights where you could "generally feel" if the monster was enraged or exhausted even if you weren't dialed in, unlike later titles where you just know they are enraged and you're swinging constantly anyway so who cares lol
Molten REALLY took advantage of this by making you really feel his different states.
When the fight begins he is cumbersome, slow, borderline asleep and just nipping at whatever is irritating him.
And when he's enraged he's a full power steam engine firing on all cylinders as he explodes into your personal space the second you lower your guard.
I always really liked how he took a built in "vibe" that monster hunter had developed over many years and cranked it to 11. Instead of having a gut notion of what state the monster was in just due to what actions you were naturally taking- you were FULLY AWARE of what state this mad fucker was in and I loved that.
Great monster.
Good to ramble about that for a bit.

Let me just drop my opinion on every monster hunter monster I’ve fought so far here now that it’s 12am oops
-
Apceros/Aptonoth- Underrated as far as herbivore fodder goes, they'll almost guarantee you one raw meat when you carve them, and really that's the only reason you would attack them.
Bullfango/Bulldrome/Kestodon/Rhenopolos- Charging monsters... I only like them better when they attack monsters too. Otherwise they have that nitpick I have with predators and prey ganging up on you for no reason.
Cephalos/Cephadrome- First sandshark, I'd accept them, but Genprey do the same stun-bite and are a lot less annoying about it
Feyline- I love them in every game but 3. I have no idea what is their DAMAGE in 3...
Genprey/Gendrome- Speaking of, an ok prey
Hornetaur- My experience stems from them biting my ankles in bonepiles, I don't appreciate their 'tude
Ioprey/Iodrome- Second-most boring prey
Kelbi/Anteka- Horns horns horns. It would be cool if a proper monster of some kind used those hard to track jumpswaitaminute
Melynx- Cute cats that are pretty dodgeable unless you're mid-fight
Mosswine- I like this guy- I think he's based off a yokai or something
Velociprey/Velocidrome- THE bird wyvern. Deceptively hard with their crowding- which puts them at the top for me.
Vespoid- Stun, stun, stun...
Basarios- What a cool guy on paper, has probably fathered more monster rigs than you think. I only like fighting him with hammer tho.
Diablos- Our favorite herbivore! I like the high damage to enforce dodging their slow and telegraphed moves
Gravios- Papa Basarios, I like him less though. Them and basarios have weird... flesh feet...
Gypceros/Yian Kut-Ku- I hate them both, but Gypceros narrowly wins because it's flash bang is an extra layer
Khezu- Low-Rank flesh BULLY.
Plesioth- I'm suffering stockholm syndrome for the meme, but there is no denying just how much their hipcheck makes them stand out alone, only fighting a more fair Deviljho hipcheck for dominance. Also, the only proper fish-wyvern for a while...
Rathalos- Flagship darling. Earlier games look like hell, though I appreciate his tail always dragging on the ground no matter what iteration you're fighting.
Rathian- The fairer Rathalos. Rise seems to have put more of her moveset into grounded Rathalos, which makes sense, though I wish she had more oomph outside of variants
Original Fatalis (Generations)- GU is the only game I barely fought them in. Outside of it's lore, the fight didn't seem much to write home about. Their variants on the other hand...
Kirin- Pony bastard. Despite everyone's claims, it seems like it always had a learnable method to it's madness like any other monster. I'm willing to wager the majority of it's grief stems from the small pool of electric monsters players have to worry about in the lategames
Lao-Shan Lung (GU)- Precious mountain baby. One of the first sieges, and first DPS races. I would probably have hated him if it wasn't for the fact his Generations bombtrack is pretty fun
Azure Rathalos- Did you ever want Rathalos to fly in the air more? Of course you do.
Silver Rathalos/Gold Rathian- Heavily dependant on game. I feel like I had the most fun running IG against their world variants, though
Black Diablos (World)- MHW:IB Diablos is crazy ok. I'm fine with it just constantly comboing into burrowing, because it encourages rare item usage in 5th Gen. It's dangerous sand waterfall trick in LR is something I actually WANT it to do in MR, because it'll stop it's combo
Blango/Blangonga- My friends are so tired of hearing me bring them up, but they are straight up the 'easy rajang' the series can use to replace him
Ceanataur/Shogun- Not fun to fight. His deviant, though...
Conga/Congalala- Hell YES. Only good monke, we need more fartmonkey. His apex was unexpectedly tough
Giaprey/Giadrome- The worst drome. I just... they have nothing.
Hermitaur/Damiyo- Now this fight is fun- It's a more engaging hard-shell basarios style fight with clear openings
Popo- Hey Tigrex...
Remobra- I hate them, but do I hate them more than rhenopolos? It's a hard tiebreaker.
Rajang/Furious- MH's favorite monkey. A fight that's tricky to learn, but a consistent rhythm when you understand it, similar to Deviljho. World is definitely one of the hardest variations, but I also think it raised new hunter's expectations of future Rajang a little too much.
Chameleos- Cool little guy. Shame about the item theft
Kushala Daora- Out of the Elder Trio, I like Kushala the most. Would I like fighting it before the IG? Eeeh, probably not.
Lunastra (World)- Pretty novas and flame effects, but an annoyance to deal with in-game. Her wingbeat fire attacks are neat, but World beat that as far as the special effects department goes
Teostra- A more involved Lunastra, but prior to Gen 5 he was a lava-camping asshole. I like his little blast-clicks.
Akantor/Ukanlos (Gen)- He's a uh, big guy alright. I'm kind of surprised at how basic his fight is- though I feel as though Tetsucabra and Zamtrios probably stole some of his stuff in hindsight
Tigrex- I just can't understand this fight, I know I won't either. I've at least figured out how to make them charge less, and how to tell if they're breaking out the crazy charges
Lavasioth- Cool fish, lava camper >:(
Nargacuga- This wyvern on the other hand- I got used to them, kind of. Phases are clear, and once you understand their openings and how they combo, the fights gradually get more smooth.
Yian Garuga- The only dangerous bird wyvern. I'd respect it's crown, but fuck em. I never liked that shoebill skeleton
Baggi/Great- My boy!!! A pretty blue, a pretty pompadour, and they aren't shy of putting you to sleep.
Giggi- Does a good job at scaring 3U first-timers
Jaggi/Jaggia/Great- I'm not impressed by base jaggi, but Jaggia and Great are pretty safe and easy to learn. I appreciate it when a Jaggi helps me carve faster, but the Jaggia can be little nuiscances
Ludroth/Royal- Water Jaggia. Royal's ok in his water fight, cool glowing eyes. Gets demoted to easier shoebill status past 3 :(
Uroktor/Agnaktor- I misname Agnaktor for Akantor all the time, god help us all. Another lava camper, so... (The hints of Najarala burrowing are here, though...)
Barioth- Apparently famously replaced Nargacuga. I like him less, because his tail swipe extends far enough to catch plesioth's hip-check
Barroth- First brute wyvern!!!! I like his lore more than I like his fight.
Deviljho (Gen)- Classic pickle. There's so much more involved with his gen fight, it unfortunately blows his World fight out of the water. Despite that, I still love new interpretations of the pickle fight
Gigginox- Now here's a gross wyvern fight. Drops babies down to join the fight and better mess with you, and has counters that don't narrow down to 'fuck you, lightning'
Gobul- For the original Nibelsnarf, his fight wasn't too involved.
Lagiacrus (3)- It's fight was so much more involved in the water! It has enough switchups that it doesn't become boring, unlike its land iteration.
Qurupeco- It's gimmick is okay, but if you strip the top layer of a 2-on-1 fight off, Qurupeco is kind of boring
Uragaan- No, I don't like this crimson chin. Will lava-camp on a dime
Alatreon (GU)- I ended up fighting them because I heard all the drama about their World variant. It wasn't really a fair fight; I came into the HR with MR armor, but it was fun to see all the moves they converted later in their original form.
Alatreon (World)- Speaking of drama... If I was playing World as it updated, I would probably have hated them as much as the rest of the fandom does. However, I bought World a solid year after it's updates ended, and I knew about his fight in the distant lategame. I had the advantage of quietly preparing a gearset for them, and ultimately found them pretty fun if not stressful on that DPS race after the hornbreaks. Conceptually its pretty interesting too, you can see every elemental elder dragon that bled into Alatreon's moveset, from Velkhana's ice beam to Kirin's thunder grids, it's all there to play I-Spy with. They had a good idea- the playerbase largely never cared for elemental damage over that affinity meta I'm so tired of, but in practice it was pretty horrible. Despite this- I still wish for a bigger elemental-focused meta in the future, or at least something to combat the hyperoffensive affinity/damage builds copypasted across every weapon.
Ceadeus- A slow, Lao-shen'y dps water fight. Such a cool whale monster, though it seems everyone agrees that they shine the most once you reach the sunken city in Area 3
Wroggi/Great- Tied for my favorite bird wyvern, just an angry little tree-frog with a good armorset
Arzuros/Lagombi- Mmm, Conga did it better. I do like the bear's silly honey steal, though
Duramboros- HHHhhhhhhhhhh Banbaro did better than you
Nibelsnarf- More interesting than Gobul, tbh. You're more likely to fish them up on a stun without retries, and the barrels are also easier to place against them. Miserable without items
Volvidon- Lagombi but it doesn't put you to sleep. Being annoying is at least engaging
Zinogre/Stygian- The fight I always feel like I'm on top of until I actually fight them. It's not that I never learned their timing, or have low element resist. I just feel like I end up making more mistakes than advantages whenever I fight them.
Amatsu (GU)- Absolute bonkers fight once they enrage. There's a lot of wiggling around before that, though..
Brachydios- No
Ivory Lagiacrus- The landstranded Lagi, without the water, it's moveset is unfortunately pretty basic....
Lucent Nargacuga (R)- I feel like it's 3U fight should be more engaging- once you figure out to watch it's eyes in Rise, you notice it's pretty close to a basic Narga fight until the tail gets powered-up
Savage Deviljho (World)- The dragonblight pool attack is really cool!!! He just doesn't feel like Jho without his deadly pins is all
Kecha Wacha- So begins the interesting starting bosses in 4U. There's a lot here that got used in Bishaten later, but I feel like Kecha wins out once he moves to the vines. Goes double the speed if you let them swing circles around you
Najarala- Snake! A cool gimmick with the sonic scales, good armor, and just a really neat skeleton never to be used again. I guess my only gripe is getting your footing back if they bump into you with that coiling trap
Nerscylla- Honestly, arguably one of my favorite monsters. She's so fast, always keeps to areas where she can speed around on the webbing, and you have the added bonus of trying to cut the webshots to knock her off-balance. All of that combined with those giant punishing mandibles of hers whenever she gets a KO on you makes her a really fun fight
Seltas- The first boss of 4U. I find him more interesting than his queen, but I'll admit his attacks are pretty basic vespoid-level attacks if he's not clawing at you
Seltas Queen- I would like them more if they just didn't look like... that? I like the tail, I like that she parties up with Seltas (and even kills them if she's low on health). But I don't like anything else about her design-wise, and her fight isn't much more interesting. If I wanted to get charged at with little thought, I'd rather fight Tigrex
Tetsucabra- Tetsu is.... okay. I have armor grinding fatigue, but their new attacks are appreciated. Their MR fight sucks though, I'm tired of charge-spamming monsters
Zamtrios- Swiss-army knife shark. There's a little too much to keep up with in their fight, but I'd rather fight them than Tetsu
Gore Magala/Chaotic- Hot damn. This baby can fit so much Frenzy and lore in them. A fight that forces you to plan carefully, but fight efficiently. Is heavily punishing of small mistakes in 4U- deals a little too much damage in rage than I'm comfortable with, but overall just a pretty solid fight (Ignoring those wing hitzones in LR...)
Shagaru Magala (GU)- I felt like they were impossible when I first fought them. A true formed Magala that really puts your focus to the test. Its hind legs are its only safespot, but that won't stop it from slamming you whenever you get too comfortable. Those + shaped blasts are still an attack I mention in other hunts
Raging Brachydios (World)- A flashy fight, but that's all Brachydios ever got going for them. I already didn't like brachydios, raging just gives you more things to rage about
Seregios- Love them! Its falcon-style talon and sweeping attacks are fun to hunt around, and it's speed is something Rise was in dire need of down the road. Now if I could just fight them outside of the desert, lol
Maccao- Another interesting take on the bird wyvern fight. I like its crazy kick-charges, though the attacks outside of those I'm not too enthusiastic about
Moofah- : )
Astalos/Boltreaver- A cool Fated 4 member! Of the four I unfortunately like Astalos the least (and I'm disappointed in his Rise fight being more like his HR than his MR fight...), but it remains a valuable member of its team. More interesting takes on bugs like this, please
Gammoth/Elderfrost- A simple fight initially, I like her MR fight more for having options where her safezones used to be. I don't think there's any way you could get closer to the hunts of prehistory than the Mammoth itself
Glavenus/Hellblade- There's no avoiding my bias for my favorite all-time monster next to Bazelgeuse. There's almost no real-world connections to really be found in this dinosaur, but I think that contributes to why I like them so much. It's just interesting to me how they balance out its breath attacks with that sharp tail, even having the ai pull feints based on your positioning with some attacks. Learning the safespots on those tail swings is one of the more cooler things to pick up
Mizutsune/Soulseer- A surprisingly fast fight, I appreciate Mizu's weasel war dances, lol. Like Nargacuga in that its fight is tricky to learn, but once you pick it up, you can come up with an answer to everything. Soulseer might be easier, but that parry mechanic is just very interesting, and a fun spin on the actual fighting moves rather than reskinning its element
Malfestio- Arguably the most interesting bird wyvern, though I'm willing to bet it's stolen from Hypnocatrice's kit. I like its little head turn around as a creative way to pounce you. I think it's only real failing is the jester aesthetic kind of getting in the way of a proper owl fight
Silverwind Nargacuga- A pretty interesting deviant, I just hate its guts lol
Rustrazor Ceanataur- I don't like Shogun, but this guy's ok. Mostly because he sharpens with Glavenus's skull and borrows their attacks, lol
Nakarkos- Bone octopus!! I wasn't impressed by their fight initially, but I really warmed up to it once I started fighting their MR version with the giant lasers and more interesting skeleton head trickery
Ahtal Ka- I love this bug. They combined the body of a praying mantis with the silkweaving of a caterpillar to make a fun mech fight where for once, the bug towers over you. All of this complete with a pretty gold carapace, and a lotus themed weakspot all culminating into the symbolism of the wheel on her back at the end is all very cool.
Valstrax (GU)- Holy Shit It's Mega-Latias. Jokes aside, I love how fast he is in generations. Like Narga and Mizu, it's all a matter of learning how to maneuver around that speed, and where all his tells and openings are at. Once you master his fight, the win feels all the better at the end
CG Valstrax/Risen (Rise)- Wirebugs? No problem. Valstrax wasn't the hero Rise asked for, but he was the hero they deserved. To bring back a monster not only faster than you in GU, but continue to remain faster than you in Rise, the fastest monster hunter game to date? Is really, really impressive to me. I mostly like all of the changes made to his bullet phases- they may be dodgeable, but Valstrax will use those evade openings to change to jet, charge, zoom around and generally outmaneuver you for slipping up. And unlike GU, you can't cheese the ambush with an area change, you HAVE to master the dive if you want to survive it solo. A dive that becomes reasonably harder to time when Valstrax continues to shoot at you from the sky in Risen form. He's just a very fun and solid elder fight, easily one of my favorites
Gajalaka- Would you believe me if I said these cats were at least more consistant than the felynes in 3? As long as you put yourself between the Gajas and the monster, they usually won't come up as a problem
Girros/Great- An interesting snake-lizard boss, though World can't fool me. There's a Royal Ludroth in there, and just like old RL, he's pretty easy to juke
Jagras/Great- I love their gluttony gimmicks. I think being a little more like Zamtrios could've made them more interesting. Maybe even incorporate some Congalala in there, where the food he eats determine statuses behind his bites.
Anjanath/Fulgur- A good rex! I like the cooling fins they have for when they get too hot, that little sit that they do when resting in Rise, and that fur covering their top half to make them more interesting than the average dinosaur
Bazelgeuse/Seething (World)- The best monster, I'm sorry I don't make the rules. As a fun fact- the exploding scales work like hardened sweat, so it's like just shedding is dangerous. Another weirdly improbable but loveable monster, I think one of my favorite aspects of its fight is just how much Seething throws its weight around to tackle you
Dodogama- A friend : ) a more interesting Jagras, as it stands currently
Jyuratodus- They made Lavasioth boring. How could you make Lavasioth more boring??? At least it's similar to a lungfish, I guess.
Kulu-Ya-Ku- Bird Up is the best Kulu. Whether it be eggs, pots, flintstone, FFXIV crystals, this guy's got it covered. My only wish is for Kulu to be more of a coward in later titles. It's an egg thief, it already has no honor
Legiana/Shrieking- A stylish, iceborne Rathalos (and maybe even a hint of Seregios). The regular fight is superior in my book, Shrieking flies a little too much and loves to roleplay Qurupeco in its spare time.
Odogaron/Ebony- The first of the garons, I love them. A dedicated corpse-eater that sacrificed any fur or scales for that tough meaty hide, I think they mesh quite perfectly in the veil. I just love how much they do those curving attacks, they're fun to dodge and punish
Paolumu/Nightshade- Ugly little bald wrinkly heads. Unfortunately Pukei and even their father Khezu wins me over more. Nightshade blowing the sleeping gas around is kind of neat, though. I don't think we see much of that outside of attacks like Rise Chameleos..
Pukei-Pukei/Coral- Speaking of, the more interesting not!khezu fight. I'm glad Pukei gets buffs based on the food he eats, though Coral wins me out on its moves in general.
Radobaan- Damn, they made Uragaan actually fun, and all they had to do was make him more fragile to partbreaks. I love how he's got a diablos skull on his back
Tzitzi-Ya-Ku- Diet gypceros but boring :(
Tobi-Kadachi/Viper- I actually don't like Tobi all that much compared to Odogaron. I guess it's just the stunspam
Vaal Hazak/Blackveil- Chefs kiss just a really cool elder dragon ok. Not only is it made with clear parts taken from girros, not only does it seem to have clear relations to kushala when you break it's hide revealing the metallic skin underneath, but it can also grow a living spore colony off its hide as well. A cool elder dragon, with a slightly annoying personal status effect packed with it
Nergigante/Ruiner- Porcupine boy. I think I would like his design more if it wasn't so weirdly abdominal-heavy? I have trouble imagining how this guy walks around normally... Anyways, I like the pressure Nergi makes to break his spikes before the divebomb, it's a nice tease to the focus on the later dps-races
Zorah Magdaros- Cool snapping turtle mountain, I think it's a suitable comparison to Lao Shen in the tempered fights. It's just unfortunate the only two required fights are so story-heavy that everyone assumes you'll be spending 3 hours sitting around, when their tempered fights actually cut it pretty close even for MR gear
Xeno'jiiva- The new elders in world are just winners, as far as I'm concerned. But while Xeno looks really cool with the translucent skin and the laser beams, the kit is basically Safi's but less. Still, it's a fun fight to finish the vanillagame on before they grow up
Kulve Taroth- Who gave royal ludroth that nice coat? Joking aside, I like any phase of Kulve that isn't the first one where you have to break her shell off. The shell phase is just painful spam of that tail attack if you don't stunlock her, but afterwards she gets fun when she goes faster with the rapidfire gold attacks and novas
Beotodus- Onto iceborne, Beotodus is easily my favorite of that piscine trio. No lava camping, no boring muck, just this snow shark trying to sneak bites at you.
Banbaro- Finally, the better duramboros. What it lacks in natural aesthetic, it makes up for it by throwing an entire forest at you. My only contention is he stole Bazelgeuse's job >:(
Frostfang Barioth- Well... its more interesting than regular barioth. Definitely not by design, but I think the whole freezing your feet into the ground stuff should be considered for the future of the ice status effect. Slowness makes a lot more sense than the same stamina debuff as water
Namielle- Has one busted up face. I love its whiskers, though. I like how it manipulates both water and electric damage in its attacks, and has clear indicators when its charged up and when its uncharged over the course of the fight.
Velkhana- Ice armor also has it's own clear indicators over the fight. Unlike Namielle though, I never want to face Velkhana with anything less than an insect glaive ever again. Pretty dragon, but there's no denying exactly how much they had to steal from kushala for that skeleton. Those slippery ice pools were the most bearable part of that fight with hammer, which only makes me all the more salty they didn't transfer that to Rise
Shara Ishvalda- Just a cool fucked up big dragon. I bet that eye trick is done through layering Shara's eyes and adding a lighting effect to make it work like the seeing-eye portraits in haunted houses, giving the illusion of always following you. The fight certainly gets a bit tight in the latter half, where Shara's usually stolen half of the arena from you at that point. ...They still seem so weirdly inkwash-y that I want to believe someone on the FF team designed them.
Safi-jiiva- Big Xeno! Not a very flashy fight, but seems fun to gun through with friends. Sapphire of The Emperor is still my favorite nova in iceborne visually. I've only done their training battle, so my opinion is probably subject to change if they get too annoying
Fatalis (World)- Speaking of fights I haven't done, I'm looking through the window at this fight like a starving victorian child
Izuchi/Great- My first MH, though the sad thing is you can only fight Rise monsters for the first time, once. Great Izuchi was one of those bird wyvern fights that stood out to me, and then immediately god outclassed after I got used to the game
Rachnoid- Lamaar! Don't go nibbling those heads!
Aknosom- Secretely a Kut-ku fight, but also a kut-ku fight handled in a fun manner compared to..... the usual..
Almudron- Pass. The mudball is the only cool thing going for him
Bishaten/Orange- Alright tengu-monkey, has some of Kecha's attacks in there, but it does a fine job mixing it up with those fruit and pinecone throws
Goss Harag- Arguably, the best regular rise boss. Goss is here to show people how to do the bear fight right, and they do it by fighting like a proper ogre rather than a bear. They play consistently, and they provide enough of a challenge with the damage Goss can deal with the dual ice-blades. It's just a shame they never saw a variant...
Tetranadon- A zamtrios-type that never lost its way. While zamtrios gets mixed up between 3 forms with no real identity, Tetranadon takes the clear sumo route with its inflated attacks, making a more interesting fight overall than the ice shark. Once again, it's a shame it never got a variant
Somnacanth/Aurora- I'm not fully sure how to judge the Somna fights. It swims around a decent amount, not too much to be annoying, and jumps between different flashing and explosive shells when the time calls for it. I think it mostly suffers because they decided to put mizu in the same game, and hunting mizu is a lot more technical than hunting Somna. I do think Aurora was a step in the right direction- they fight more aggressively than regular Somna and spend less time swimming around unless going for physical blows
Rakna-Kadaki/Pyre- Nerscylla's crazy sister! While Rakna is much slower than her 4U counterpart, she weirdly makes good practice for the smaller spider. Her web-launches are much slower, but more powerful, which better encourages players to cut the line when the opportunity shows itself. The bonus fire damage when webbed was a good idea, but unfortunately you'll end up escaping before Rakna goes for the fire combo more than half the time. Pyre, thankfully, skips the middleman and just blows you up in a matter of seconds before you get time to react to some of her attacks. I like their joint efforts with the baby rachnoids- it's the first time we've seen that kind of team-up in a while
Magnamalo/Scorned- Good shit. A flagship that's not too hard, but feels too fast on a first playthrough unless you really wrapped your mind around the wirebug speed. Cool samurai tiger, cool halberd tail, when am I going to see him and Glavenus turf war, huh?
Ibushi- An elder best left to the Rampage where it felt his fight belonged. Fighting him outside of it just feels weird, since his best attacks are all integrated into Allmother Narwa anyways, he feels a bit redundant outside of his comfort zone. I remember the rampage being tight at the time- Ibushi actually won a couple of rounds while I was trying to farm his gear in my alt file.
Narwa- Still not at the real fight, Narwa's vanilla fight before the update was... okay. I wasn't really impressed by it- I actually found it too easy at the time, because all of her attacks were pretty slow and easy to react to. It's only after the update that I felt she could live up to the final boss title
Narwa The Allmother- Now we're cooking with gas. Allmother drags you into an arena where you no longer have to shift your focus on siege weaponry until she novas, so the most of the fight is just between you and her, and she thankfully has more catered attacks to this situation. Now, we have a monster that is more dangerous to engage in the air, which is a title only shared by Valstrax in Rise. All of her attacks have more oomph, and she's not shy of breaking those big attacks up with bites to reposition herself either. ...Now if only she didn't steal Ahtal Ka's dragonators p:
Espinas/Flaming- Cactus dragon is here. Ridiculously hard on the first impression, then later fights mellow out as you learn more about them. I think it's a shame that Flaming ended up easier than basic Espinas, though the regular version doesn't usually capitalize on the stun window anyways, so he's alright outside of his initial spawn
Garangolm- New monkey discovered! Strangely, I think most of it's attacks seem pretty unique to it, I'm kind of hard-pressed to find other monsters to compare it to. Despite that, Garangolm ended up kind of.... boring. Oops. I like how it just blasts around on its hands, but unfortunately there's a monster at the end of Sunbreak that just does the same thing, but better.
Lunagaron- The second puppy! I still love Ebony Odogaron's fight the most, though Lunagaron has an interesting transformation gimmick I like. I just wish that its 'werewolf' farm hit harder than a wet towel outside of the lunge attack
Malzeno- Castlevania itself is here. And.. with a good chunk of Velkhana's kit. Oops. Well, despite all the tail attacks, his ground blasts are pretty interesting, his grab is just a pretty fun attack, and I like how Malzeno zooms around the arenas once he's enraged. I don't think it would've been bad if they just ported the Malzeno from the demo, but alas he was only kind of hard compared to the elders following him.
Magma Almudron- Special shout outs for being the better monster compared to basic Almudron, and probably one of the few fun lava monster fights. Its just much more aggressive, spends much less time clowning around, and its lava attacks are just more dangerous and interesting than its old kit
Gaismagorm- Ok but- did we have to have 3 goblin shark-mouthed elder bosses in Rise??? I actually understand Gais, but if they were committing to that, I felt like they should have just given Narwa and Ibushi normal snouts instead. Anyways- Gaismagorm is that much more interesting take on Garangolm's charges I mentioned, except Gais is the size of the entire battlefield. So, when he charges you're pretty liable to get chipped. The final boss of Sunbreak really kicks in once the gems are off and he lights up. Attacks get much harder to dodge, they summon meteors, sun turrets, all of this cool stuff to stop you. Gaismagorm might have not been a difficult final boss, but he definitely earned the respect a final boss elder dragon deserves in this series
The Risen Elders- Eeeeh? To be honest- the battles don't stand out as much to me as Valstrax's did. I'm at a loss on what attacks were clearly unique and endangered me, so... that's not good for post-100 variants

Relentlessly Pursued: Part One {Genshin Impact x Monster Hunter Stories 2 Crossover}
A/N: This crossover focuses on Y/N and his monstie, a Hellblade Glavenus, along with his four friends, Alwin, Cheval, Kyle, and Reverto. This crossover takes place eight months later after their unexpected arrival in Teyvat, and while Teyvat was a very welcoming place to them and where they made lots of friends along with their journey, they accidentally came across some members of an organization, known as the Fatui, and causing Y/N and his friends to make a run for their lives.
M/N's Pov
It's been over eight months since I've been in this strange world known as Teyvat, but luckily I'm not the only one here, I got Alwin, Cheval, Kyle, and Reverto along with me. Me, Alwin and Cheval are riders while Kyle and Reverto are hunters, and despite our differences, we both became best of friends and went on many adventures back in our world.
Throughout our months in this wonderful yet strange world, we've faced many challenges like fighting various types of monsters which weren't new to us, many people were fascinated of our bravery and quickly seen us as heroes of Teyvat and even named us, 'The Fearless Wandering Hunters'.
"Guys, we have a problem," Alwin said while riding his monstie Legiana, Shaulk, "what is it Alwin?" I asked, "there has been multiple sightings of hilichurls near Wangshu Inn," Alwin replied, "what are we're waiting for then? Let's go," Kyle said getting his bow ready, "let's do this bros," Reverto said excitedly, "don't forget about me," Cheval added before getting on Rathi, "let's not waste anymore time, let's hunt," I said getting on my monstie, a Hellblade Glavenus, "right," they said simultaneously, and with that we went out for the hunt.
When we got to the place, we saw a lots of hilichurls with shields and clubs in their hands, they've started charging at us the second they saw us, but before they got close to us my monstie started shooting explosive magma at them while Rathi started hitting them with it's poisonous tail while Cheval still riding on it. Then, Kyle began to shoot pierce arrows at them while Shaulk started blowing a very cool breeze at them, and in the matter of seconds our hunt was over.
"Man, that was more fun than hunting a Molten Tigrex," Reverto said, before me and the other nodded in agreement. We were about to head back home when suddenly all of us heard a loud "hi," when both quickly turned around at the source of the voice, only to see a young boy with a very large hat and was wearing unusual clothing that we hadn't seen before even in our world.
"You all must be The Fearless Wandering Hunters, correct?" The boy asked, "that's right bro, we are," Reverto replied, "that's great, I've heard a lot about you all, it's an honor to meet you all in person," the boy said, "thanks, the honor is ours," I said, "and you must be Y/N, correct?" The boy asked me, "yes I am, how did you knew my name?" I asked, shocked by the question, "well let's say that I heard lots of rumors about you all," the boy replied with a smile on his face. Cheval, Kyle and Alwin both looked at me with a suspicious look on their faces, I too was suspicious about this guy but tried my best to hide it.
"Oh and Y/N, if it's not too much to ask, may I speak to you in private?" The boy asked, "oh I don't mind that at all," I replied, trying to hide my suspicion, "great, I would love to know more about you as well," he said, "same goes for me," I replied before we began looking for a nice and quiet spot to chat, my friends were clearly suspicious, but I smiled at them to let them know that everything will be okay.
"So, what do you want to talk about?" I asked the boy, "have you ever heard about the Fatui and the Fatui Harbingers?" The boy asked, "no, not really, also you never told us your name," "oh, my apologies, you can call me Scaramouche, and it's good for you not to know about the Fatui," I became curious about his response, "what do you mean by that?" I asked him, "This," he said before snapping his fingers, the second he did that, multiple people with unusual clothing started appearing out of nowhere and started charging at me.
I began running as quick as I can but was stopped dead in my tracks when they were surrounding me, one of them walked up to me then grabbed me tightly on my wrist, "let go of me! I've done nothing!" I yelled, "oh don't waste your voice Y/N, no one can hear you," Scaramouche said, he began to walk up to me while giving me a sinister smirk, but before he got close to me I saw Reverto charging at the guy who was grabbing me, I was set free and I began whistling for my monstie to show up while me and Reverto made a run for it.
"Get them you idiots, don't let them escape!" Scaramouche said in a authorized tone, "sir," they replied, then out of nowhere my monstie appeared then proceeded to swing it's tail that was covered in explosive powder, the swings were powerful enough to make the ground explode upon impact and causing the mysterious people to back away from it. This gave us plenty of time to escape from Scaramouche and from the mysterious people.
"Y/N, are you hurt?" Reverto asked me while holding me on the stomach to not fall off my monstie, "yeah, I'm okay," I said looking back at him, we then stopped at an abandoned camp and started to signal SOS flares for the others to rendezvous with us. Minutes had passed before we saw Rathi and Shaulk, when they both landed, Alwin, Cheval and Kyle both ran up to me and started to hug me tightly, "we're glad you're okay Y/N," Alwin said, "I'm glad you all are okay too," I said hugging them back before we sat down near the campfire.
"So what happened while I was talking to the mysterious guy we encountered earlier?" I asked, "a lot has happened Y/N, the minute you were gone with the guy, people in mysterious clothing started appearing out of nowhere left and right," Kyle replied, "and they tried to apprehend us but we resisted, we've told Reverto to look for you to see if you were okay, while he did me, Alwin and Kyle started to escape on Rathi and Shaulk," Cheval added. "The same thing happened to Y/N as well, when I saw him a man grabbed him on his arm while the mysterious guy with the big hat started to walk up to him, that's when I started charging at the guy who had held Y/N by the arm and we both escaped with his monstie unharmed," Reverto also added.
"I knew something was sketchy about that guy," Kyle said, "and I have a feeling that he'll continue to pursue us if we aren't careful enough," Cheval added. "The worse part about it is that he isn't the only one," I said, they both looked at me curiously and Kyle asked, "what do you mean Y/N?" I hesitated before replying, "while I had a conversation with the mysterious boy, he asked me have I ever heard about the Fatui and the Fatui Harbingers. I'm starting to think he's a part of the 'Fatui' and is possibly a Fatui Harbinger."
"The Fatui, I've heard that name before while being in Mondstadt," Alwin said, "have you Alwin?" I asked him, "yes, from what I know is that it's a bad organization that is feared by everyone outside of it," he replied, "what do they have against us?! We didn't even did nothing to them," Kyle said angrily, "that's a good question that really needs to be answered," Cheval said.
"So what now?" Reverto asked, "I think it's best to lay low for now, we'll still hunt but we should continue to do so while watching our backs," I replied, "that's easier said than done, but I'm with you," Kyle said in agreement, "me too," Cheval added, "me three," Reverto also added, "and me four," Alwin added as well, then my monstie along with Rathi and Shaulk started nodding their heads in agreement as well. "I'm going to bed now, today's been one Hellblade of a day," I said before yawning, " it sure was," Reverto said before yawning as well, and with that we all went to sleep while trying to forget about the traumatizing event.

"Come for the story, stay for the monsters, Part 2" or: Why I find the MH Stories games to be so very average
And by "average", I mean "not good, but playable" compared to many other games I own. Allow me to eloborate:
MH:Stories The most obvious weak points of the first MH: Stories were its graphics and level design. Bland landscapes and creepy, featureless silhouettes where NPCs would spawn into being hinted at problematic hardware restrictions. In addition to that, many dungeons consisted of the same set of rooms. This applies to the procedurally generated monster nests, but even main dungeons had only some original rooms strewn into the mix.
Gameplay-wise, you could only obtain about 5 new monsters per area (unless you were in post-game), and it took forever until you were able to get any of the more well-designed monsters. Even the "Great Jaggi" or "Great Baggi" that are fairly unexciting in MH: Tri made a very late appearance. Not to mention that fan favorites like the Tigrex or (black) Nargacuga were only obtainable post game.
The story is predictable, but kind of ok, if you like Rathalos. As for me, I don't like Rathalos, and having this non-imaginatively named "Ratha" being fixed in the 6th slot of my party did not make me like him more. Also, the story promises you to get an Elder dragon, but doesn't deliver. Oh well.
On the other hand, however; the battles are actually fun. They work by a stone, scissors, paper principle - which is new and refreshing for a RPG. You have to memorize the opponent's pattern and act accordingly. Patterns can be pretty complex, but your defenses usually leave some room for trial and error. There is also a fantastic system that lets you transfer abilities from one monster to another to craft your favorite "Monstie" into an all-purpose warrior. In conclusion; there are many things to criticize, but the main gameplay element - the battles - as well as the ability to collect and befriend many of the fabulous Monster Hunter Monsters, make it a title that fans of Monster Hunter and RPGs are likely to enjoy. Others probably not so much.
MH:Stories 2 The sequel, using the Nintendo Switch as platform, did not suffer the same hardware restraints. Environments are bigger, more detailed and more lush. Unfortunately, however, the procedurally generated dungeons make a reappearance, too, and it feels like there are even more of them (or they are bigger, both of which is not good). There are more monsters to collect, along with new ones from MH: World and a greater number of obtainable Elder Dragons. It also doesn't take quite as long for fan favorites to appear as you progress the story.
Which takes us to ... the story. Despite the series' name, its story is certainly not its selling point. The story of MH:S2 is confusingly similar to that of its prequel, not just, but also because many characters from the prequel make a reappearance. They seemingly do not remember a "hero" from back then, but the new hero's grandfather would sort of fit that role. Was that an element scrapped at the last minute? We are also stuck again with a "cursed" Rathalos named "Ratha" (Seriously, they still could not think of anything better?) - which also locks into the 6th slot of the party for the story's duration.
So, can the battle system make up for it like in the prequel? Yes ... and no. There is still the "gene enhancement" system, battles still work the same way, are still fun, but the opponent's patterns are simpler and there is less room for error. This might be because you can take friends or NPCs with their monsters into battle with you - meaning they are potential targets as well. But your influence on these NPCs is very limited and they do not "predict" the opponent's pattern as effectively as you, meaning they might be less supportive and more of a hindrance sometimes.
In total, the first game had a lot of potential to improve, and while the sequel fixed some of those issues (visuals), it also added new ones (battles) while others grew worse (story) or remained unfixed (dungeons). Overall, it comes back down to the average: An enjoyable game for fans of Monster Hunter and RPGs, for others perhaps not so much.

Finished the first two sets. I had a little thought of doing a Monster Hunter and Medabots crossover.
Zinogre requested by @z-zanimuri (can't tag for some reason)
And Dodogama by @theg-man
dodogama was kinda hard to come up with but it was fun. Zinogre was also fun to do, and he gets a cape to make up for the fur. Up next is a Zenith Tigrex request that may be posted tomorrow

Favorite and least favorite monsters? Alternatively favorite and least favorite elder dragons even though those are also monsters but shhh
Ok so attempt 5 at getting this to actually post, having to redo the whole thing every time.
Anyways, screw it, I'm bored and am thus gonna do both!
Favorite Monster: Tie between Seltas Queen and Bazelguese
Seltas queen is such a badass looking design, and is full of persobality and charm. It's mechanics of fighting with it's normal seltas is extreamly fun and unique as is it's whole fight, it's equipment looks amazing (of which i grinded for all of it in 4u), and overall it's just a great monster! My favorite old world monster 100%
Bazelguese is such a memorable (and memeable) monster, with its chilling and fear inspiring roar, its epic and all around amazing theme, it's fun as all hell fight, its good looking armor (also grinded to get the full thing, sadly it has no hammer). All of this, plus its charming design make it a blast (get it?) to be around, wmof which you will be a lot, it being an invader and all.
Least Favorite Monster: Tigrex
Ok, me and this idiotic god forsaken hell beast have HISTORY! Ever since 4u I've held a grudge against this damn thing.
Meh at best design and ugly colors? Check. Never ending charges? Yes (almost as bad as bulldrome istg). Obnoxious roar (of which hurts you, cause WHY WOULDN'T IT)? Check. Meh at best theme? Check. Bad equipment? Check. Huge hitboxes, extremely speed, and hits like a truck? Triple check! Ugly armor? A MILLION CHECKS JESUS IT'S HIDEOUS.
My anger for this beast shall die only when I do.
Favorite Elder Dragon: Shagaru Magala
Personally, Shagaru is the peak of what elder dragons should be. A challenging fight with a unique mechanic (frenzy), a brilliant design, lots of lore, amazing armor, and a big part of the story. This thing is such a great monster, and shows what I think is the prefect model of what an elder dragon should be. Such a great monster, and almost up there with Bazel and Seltas Queen.
Least Favorite Elder Dragon: Kushala Daora
The only good thing about this thing is it's cool concept and design. Otherwise, you have an annoying fight with an underwhelming theme, rewarded with ugly and worthless equipment, and all together outclassed by a majority of monsters, let alone elder dragons.
Feel free to send more asks!

YEAH I mean honestly, i kind of burned out through 4U sometime in the area post Shagaru Magala (on tigrex or diablos i think???) cause it was a little too hard and draining to farm...The QOL that World and Rise do are wonderful, BUT I do feel a lot of charm has been lost in the sheer amount of content they have compared to the classic games (Up through Generations) 4U had a TON of stuff to it, and I also miss the monster variety + armor variety we used to have. Rise fixes a lot of the charm that World lost, though World is an absolute gem to play for exploration. My ideal is just a happy ground with World's exploration and level of world detail, Rise's mobility and combat feel, and all of classic's variety. I hope the next title gets us there, but Rise on PC will be really fun at least!!! You'll enjoy it, there's plenty to bite into, but I would say that it is kind of hard to go back to the older titles once you get a taste of the QOL gathering.
I DO get that...I'll be honest, I have a little bit of a love/hate relationship with MH4u's crafting. Like, it is cool how you can craft the items you gather into pretty much anything you need on the fly...but I like to be well-stocked on potions and stuff before hunts, so I spend a lot of time just gathering in the first area and shuffling through my storage box/inventory to make everything I need instead of. well, hunting and enjoying the game 😅 the amount of time you need to spend gathering and crafting stuff could definitely be improved - and I'm glad to hear it has been in the newer titles.
I'm a bit sad to hear that Rise doesn't have World's depth of exploration, because I do love exploring! But I'm not sure if it would be worth it for me to buy and play World, with Rise on the horizon. it's good that Rise has returned some of the charm that the older titles have though! I'm definitely looking forward to it!

Top 6 Monsters you’d like to see return in Rise. I know you’ve mentioned Mizu, Gammoth, Astalos and Malfestio already, so you can exclude them. Monsters in World (ie Brachy, Tigrex, Barioth) don’t count.
#6: Lagiacrus

Assuming that they’ve gotten the Leviathan skeleton working again, Lagi needs to come back. It’s the quintessential member of its classification and it would be super weird to have them return without their leader. Alongside being a monster quite dear to my heart, it’s also got a pretty great fight.
#5: Amatsu
This also relies on the Leviathan skeleton working (although it does have an advantage of not touching the ground), but Amatsu would be a perfect match to Rise’s style as it’s overall design is very fitting to the aesthetic of the game. I’ve never fought it before, but from what I’ve seen it’s fight is also super interesting and a better interpretation of a controller of wind than Kushala.
#4: Gigginox

The only Pseudowyvern that didn’t make it into Iceborne, a travesty considering it lives in icy habitats, Giggi needs to come back. She’s been gone since 3U and I’d love to see her return. Rise’s additions to vertical combat would also make fighting her while she crawls around caves super fun.
#3: Seltas and Seltas Queen
I’m lumping these two together as you can’t have one without the other. As Rise is aiming to have more monster variety and insectoid monsters are confirmed to return with the new Temnoceran (which probably means Nerscylla is returning too), they would be a perfect inclusion. I NEED MY GURREN LAGAN BUGS CAPCOM
#2: Seregios

One of the few Flagships not to return in Iceborne, this is the chance for Steve to return. It’s my favourite Flying Wyvern, has a rather interesting personality and fast-paced fun fight. Plus if Bagel returns, the two of then need to have a Turf War or Cinematic of some kind.
#1: Chameleos

Chammy unfortunately missed the jump to 5th gen with its trio brethren Teo and Kushala, but I feel like this game would be its chance to shine again. Alongside one of my favourite Elder Dragon designs, it’s got a super unique fight thanks to the ingenuity of its invisibility mechanic. I’ve also heard a couple people say it fits the game aesthetic, which although I don’t fully understand why myself, I’d love to see it given a graphical update to modern standards.

Time for your take on the Fated Four.
Send me a monster from any of the Monster Hunter games and I'll tell you my thoughts on them! | Accepting
oh BOY here we go ill rank them from least enjoy to most enjoy!
Starting off the lowest with Glavenus. Now, just because hes may lowest doesn't mean I hate him. He’s a cool ass monster! He just didn't excite me too much cuz I guess he just didn't have a lot of memorable bits to me. A brute wyvern with a great sword for a tail. Pretty cool!
Now, how he uses that tail and also the new Acidic Glavenus whom I ADORE boost him up quite a bit, but still not enough to outshine the other three of the Fated Four. Fighting him is really fun! I love being able to time my blocks perfectly against him and his Acidic counter part and cutting off his tail is ALWAYS satisfying.
- - - - - - - -
Onto the next with Astalos! The Bug Zapper Dragon!
Astalos was a SIGNIFICANT step up from Glav and to say he looks cool is a fucking understatement. His wing design is gorgeous and I LOVE his aggression, it makes him so fun to face in GU. Its not often you see just Chaoticlly Aggressive monsters like Astalos so its really fun when one pops up.
Not to mention his deviant that makes a LITERAL BLACK HOLE LIKE TF but I don't really have much else to say about that. Hes just more interesting than glav
- - - - - - - -
And now we’re onto Gammoth! and my GOD DOES SHE IMPRESS ME EVERY TIME I SEE HER
A full on fucking Mammoth and the only monster in GU that actually makes me feel tiny standing next to her. While she’s not the most difficult fight in the world, I adore her design and I've always loved seeing the cutscene of her and tigex fighting!
I really hope we get to see her in a future game, I’d love to see a turfwar of Gammoth and Tigrex where she just grabs tigex and throws him across the map with her trunk. Seeing her pop up never gets old and its so sad how she's a lot of people least favorite of the four with how fucking unique she is. And we can't forget her GODLY theme

And now we’re onto the one that everyone knows I love the most, Mizutsune the Bubble Fox Wyvern!
Mizutsune has So Much Good going for him, from the way he looks matching every single one of my aesthetics ( Pink? Yes! Covered in fins? Yes!! Amazing Armor???? YES!!!! ), a very unique design being one of the first leviathans I've seen in monster hunter, a fun status ailment no other monster holds ( Slip and slide on bubbles! ), and just generally being such a fun sight to behold.
And then we go into Soulseer, a blind deviant that sees the world using it’s bubbles. and @liyuanne even talked about its armor when I showed it to her, telling me about The Fox Wedding stories they have over in the east (Because the armor for the blademaster IS based around eastern wedding apparel!) and it just makes me love it even more
Mizutsune is a beautiful and fun creature and high key one of my favorites and will forever be the top of the Fated Four for me!
