Lovesick 2014 versus Lovesick 2024
Rebooting the OG BL, Thailand? Are you sure that's wise?

I don't think anyone is ready for the depths I'm about to go to. But the gauntlet was thrown and comparisons must be made.
Generally when an IP is being remade by a different country I try to cut it slack and evaluate based on fresh eyes and different standards. But this is an actual reboot, not a reinterpretation.

Challenge accepted, Thailand.
A tiny bit of background......
I was one of those who watched Lovesick (LS14 aka the original) early on in my BL journey. No, not when it was airing, but the BL cut when it was first put up on YT (or maybe it was grey first?) hard subbed by fans way back before Netflix picked it up (and then dropped it). So yeah, it's been a while. and I LOVED it. I've rewatched it MULTIPLE times.
I like YA narratives and I enjoy high school BL and that is probably all Lovesick's fault. But nostalgia is a toxic emotion, so I'm trying to give the reboot (LS24 aka the new version) some credit.
But for those who don't know Love Sick is The Original Thai BL. Do not argue. It just is.
The plan is to do a general round up and comparison of broad aspects of script, filming, and acting at the very end, but as it airs I decided to do a "watch off." You ready?
And now......
Boys in Blue Shorts
LS24 Episode 1 versus LS14-s1 Episodes 1, 2, 3, 4Ā
They did a smart thing tailoring the whole thing down to just the BL thread from the original. And removing the opening party sequence is definitely a win.
However, with less time spent on all the ensemble characters in the opening three episodes, itās a lot harder to keep such a large cast of characters straight (irony), especially the music club.
Also they materially damage the evolution of Noh & Phun's romance by losing the actual first sleepover and the "eating out with the girls" scenes, which really bonded the two boys in friendship prior to the "water fight crash into me" romantic beginning. By skipping to just the first flush of romance, PhunNoh feels rushed.
* UPDATE!! Spies report in that a lot of the stuff I complain about missing in the 2024 version is in the uncut version on iQIYI. (Which is longer by as much as 25%!) So I am rewatching it there and updating this post accordingly.
We got the entire arc of their first brush with love in just episode one of LS24. Which comes off as fast and cliffs-notes esk. However, it's more in line with modern Thai BL (which is rarely slow burn) and also more sexy and physical, less intimate and emotional.Ā
I've never liked the first two episodes of LS14, but episodes 3 & 4 are killer. Not to mention important to the plot and to the history of Thai BL.
In the end, because the cutting floor choices impacted the weight and emotional resonance of the main romance thread, Iām (still) going to give this one to the original.Ā But you absolutely must watch the uncut version of the new version, it makes a massive difference.
2014 wins (but only just)
LS24 Episode 2 versus LS14-s1 Episodes 5, 6, 7Ā
The "Phun sick at Noh's house" is a lot more flirtatious in the new version but I missed the shoulder in the car and Noh snapping at Aim from the original. But I like Noh choosing to be a bolster pillow and offering himself (rather than being coerced), and the near kiss is better in the new version.
The new version also makes Phun more pitiable, like he sees Noh as a place/person of refuge. I like that a lot better for his character (and queerness).
Making Aimās quandary (and personality flaws) nested in an actual queer crises (similar to Phun's) is a better tactic for sympathy, so this second ep really got me with some nice modernizations.
Phun freezing Noh out strikes hard in both versions but we lost Noh's identity crisis and Phun's crisis of conscience this time around.

The "letting go of the hand" is more powerful in the original, but it was also pretty good in the new one.
I hate to do this but, I have to......
2024 winsĀ

I say this knowing that the hand in the bookstore is and forever will be one of the most iconic moments in BL history.
If you disagree with me you can, literally, talk to the hand.
LS24 Episode 3 versus LS14-s1 Episodes 8, 9, 10Ā
The drunken confession, kiss, and the escape to the beach.

No kiss in the new version (which is WILD), but the old version hardly counted either.
In 2024 they have to make Phun have a long term crush and Noh be softer over gay feels to compensate for a tighter timeframe. These changes I donāt mind, but it does modernize the BLness of it all.
I really like that Phun was questioning his own sexuality when he initially asked Noh to fake date, and that the real reason was that he was testing himself. That is, frankly, more realistic to a queer coming of age, and makes the fake dating plot lest stupid. And it makes Phun a more likable character.
The shouting confessions in the new version were really cute too. As was the crying.
But Iām sad that we got no kiss and no back hug or chin down hug.

The original is so much more poignant, and so much more messy and so much more teenage about everything.
I cried in the original and I didnāt in the reboot.
"If it takes no time at all to fall in love, why does it hurt so bad to say goodbye?"Ā
Whatever way that script is translated, itās a great line.Ā
Ep 10 from 2014 is a real dud tho.Ā
Argh! What to do? This one is a draw.Ā
No winner.Ā
An interesting thing about this show i never thought about during my many watches of the original: Phun has a harder time, even though he brought it on himself, partly because Noh is accustomed to being like where Phun is not. Phun, as the rich kid, is used to being envied and admired even respected. But not genuinely liked. The fact that Noh genuinely liked him for him (and not what he has) is a huge reason he can't let go.
I think the newer version showcases Phun's character in general a lot better than the original, and yeah I do think that is partly a superior actor this time around. Sorry, White.
LS24 Episode 4 versus LS14-s1 EPisodes 11, 12 & LS14-s2 Episodes 1, 2Ā
Earn loans the money and sports day commences.
Necklace drama and Phunās jealousy, especially in the council room, is better in the new version. Itās just more vicious and petty and appropriate to teenagers. Plus a proper kabedon.
I did miss the face touch, forehead kiss, and āwe donāt actually belong to each anotherā line.Ā
Argh that was SUCH are great line.
Not to mention the iconic standing in the street:

But, again, the opening eps of season 2 back in 2015 were very much not good, so condensing them down is an improvement.
Decisions, decisions.
No I can't, it's a draw again.
No winner.
LS24 Episode 5 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 2, 3, 4
Sports day continues, Phun thwarts Earn, the overalls scene du jour.Ā
Earn, the original, remains one of the greatest queer role models ever put into a BL. There is just no contest, sorry not sorry.
He is the King.

The new version has a public shoulder lean plus and epic "MINE" glare. You know I love a claiming.
But the big after party is much better in the old version.

But the switch of Golfās character to Grace and the reason she left the school is absolutely genius and possibly my favorite change that has been made in the new series so far.

Oh but I really LOVE the drunken bathtub scene in the original.
This is a hard call.
But I simply must give it to the original. (Super props on Gracie tho, nice call 2024.) Ā
2014 winsĀ
LS24 Episode 6 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 10
This new version speaks out loud more of the angst and messiness. The original let that simmer and be shown more than it was told. Interesting twist on the video evidence.Ā
(I love the tiny side couple of tough kid + the dork of the music club. Nice little ship, that.)

And...... Weāre done with the beach visit already? The original took 4 eps! Which definitely couldāve been condensed down. Still no sunrise after sleeping in lawn chairs, no confession no nothing. Also lost one of the most iconic lines in all BL by leaving that section out.
Itās a terrible feeling, not knowing where the line is between us.

Itās so good. Hard to forgive the new version for losing it. Not to mention there's no Noh calling Earn to ask for his advice and Earn being torn over what to do with a bisexual crisis. Also "morning kiss krab."
But episode 9 of the original is entirely unnecessary and large chunks of 8 and 10 are as well.Ā I canāt believe I entirely blocked out forgot about the singing competition. I mean, this is me, I always fast-forward through most of the singing stuff, but I forgot this whole part of season two.
Again, I lament the loss of iconic moments from the original script more than anything else, but because of the sheer quantity of superfluous flack in the original, and the fact that the new Phun is the prettiest pouty baby, this point has to go to the new version.Ā

2024 wins
LS24 Episode 7 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 11, 12, 13, 14
New Phunās bitch face really is exceptional. I kind of enjoy everybody ribbing the two of them because they have no idea whatās actually going on.Ā
End of the auditions and the ārepairing the couch Earn flirtsā scene. Phun v jelly. I do like the way Earn puts it in this one, basically āI canāt fight against you if you donāt even know what youāre fighting for.ā AKA you arenāt a worthy opponent.Ā

Heās nicer in this version. In the original, the confrontation between these two was much nastier.Ā
I love how Noh consciously winds Phun up in this version. It was really nice to see Noh get a bit of his own back. Of course Phun is sulky about it. He didnāt deserve to be rewarded with Nohās confession but at least he didnāt let it just rest there, but gave his own back. We lost the problematic ānot gayā line in the new version, which is very good. BUT we also lost the original shouting āI like youā across the court for all the nongs to overhear. Which is sad. Plus new version has much less Pete. Original ep 12 was epic.
We lost the phone flirting from the original, which was very cute. So I did very much miss that.Ā
The party at Nohās.Ā
In the original, this has probably the best sequence of scripting in BL history. (Noh & Golf through the door) Where Noh talks about what it means to truly love somebody.
Mostly because they cut that bit out in the new version, Iām afraid I have to give this one to the original.
2014 wins
LS24 Episode 8 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 15, 16
The clip is discovered, the after effects of the party, the showering with Ohm, and the confrontation over Aim.
Okay so the post it love note of sweetness is better in 2024.
The Per/Win story arc never interested me in 2014 and Iām not enjoying it in 2024 either. But Mick & Ohm are better in 2024. Nong Mick is a standout character, and a brilliant glow up in this version. Confident little shit (affectionate).Ā

Helpful boyfriend Phun was darling. The bits where they are together as a couple really are the best. Itās when the rest of the world intrudes that things goes south.
I absolutely loved Aim's confrontation with her mother in the new version. It was stellar. And something that would never have been depicted 10 years ago.
Ah those classic high school trials and tribulations when your boyfriend has footage of your girlfriend with another girl. Weāve all been there.
Honestly, this is a much more messy and much better break up for Aim and Phun. More dramatic and more public. I like that change.Ā
All that said we lost Earn and the rejection in the theater. StillĀ this one was an easy call:
2024 winsĀ
(How crazy, by the way, that as I type this: Ngern is opposite Oat OF ALL PEOPLE in Fourever You, Pineare and Sammy are ALSO in that show, August is finally in a leading role in a different remake, Addicted Heroin, Gunsmile is BACK in a cameo and this is the show he returned too away from GMMTV. We live in wild times.)
LS24 Episode 9 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 17, 18
The music competition ends + the big break up.
I like Earnās sincerity and open admission in the new version, and I like how genuine and delicate Noh is coping with someone crushing on him. Probably because he knows how painful it is from the other side.
The conversation between Phun and Aim was much better and more kind in the new version, too.Ā
Nohās cute pink raver cartoon outfit was everything.Ā
All in all Iām not wild about the original episodes of this segment. Sure there were a few things that I missed but none that I remembered well enough without the rewatch. So for this and that great communication around the break up:Ā
2024 wins
Since the number of the old episodes being squeezed into the new version has gone down, Iām assuming they arenāt planning on encompassing all of Season 2 in 2024. I suspect weāre gonna lose the camp in the forest section. Which is a shame, is has some of my favorite scenes.
LS24 Episode 10 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 19, 20, 21

2024 Phun actually turns into Dangerous Babygirl when he is flirting, who knew? (Dangerous Babygirl is a new archetype I have just invented. Yes, I'm pleased with myself.) Noh, who is a nice goodboy, doesnāt stand a chance. Neither does Jeed, since Phun has damn near perfected āback off bitch" face.
The arm drape public claiming, it gets me every time. It has done since SOTUS. I love to see it show back up again in a show that's already harkening back to the early days. It's like they used a trope that wasn't in the original to remind us of the past.

Nong Mick is hands-down my favorite character in the new version. I love him so much I canāt stand it. Consistent Nong King behavior. He uses his cute for evil and I love it.

The dunk tank part is better in 2014 and very funny. The kiss not kiss is a thing (and was a thing at the time) but I'm hoping we get a much better one in 2024 so I wasn't sad to see it left out this time. The one thing Thailand learned before most other BL producing countries was that boys can kiss (but it would take another 3 year and MaxTul to learn 'em good.) The concert at the convent is too long either way, but itās much longer in the original. So for that alone the original gets docked. You know me and singing.Ā
That said, Phun stealing Noh from the two girls is pretty epic in the original. Hard to beat. As is Per and the screaming girls. But that Per scene wouldnāt work in 2024 with his character since he's a completely different personality. Also that level of comedy kinda requires Sing to execute.

Finally we get the confession on the agreement become a couple.
Noh is a lot more game and sweet and kind and less awkward in the new version. And since secondhand embarrassment is rough for me I prefer this new one. Sure, it still feels like the 2014 is more authentic to this kind of high school queer experience. (Maybe thatās because Noh's confused awkwardness is old-fashioned and so am I.) But 2024's lap sitting and crying together was truly spectacular.

All in all a hard choice, but I'm afraid I have to say:
2024 winsĀ
LS24 Episode 11 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 22, 23, 24
Waking up together. first date, the famous piano scene, Yuri's lament + Yuri catches them kissing.Ā

This is where the teen awkward comes to the front of the class and misspells it's name...... in both versions. And itās always a challenge to watch because Phun is so ready to come out to the world (despite the fact that heās more at risk with his family) and Noh is so not ready (despite the fact that we know his family and friends would be happy for him).Ā

It stands in contrast to their personalities too, Phun who is reserved and introverted, while Noh is cheerful and outgoing. And yet it always felt (and feels) very true to character as well. Noh wants to be liked and he's scared of being teased. Phun is more sure of himself, and with fewer quieter friends.
All the couples are so sweet in the new version where as, frankly, in 2014 one I only ever gravitated to Phun, Noh, Earn, and Pete.
In this episode (11) I enjoy how they're using all these likable side couples to foil our main couple by depicting all the different ways coming out (and being out) can go: from the good to the bad to the ugly. It amplifies the angst and the pacing in this episode and it highlights that both Phun and Noh are correct in their (un)willingness to be openly together. Because they really donāt know what the consequences might be, or even if there are consequences.Ā

In general, this segement was full of pining, angst, and communication issues and I thought bundled together in 2024 made for a much more tense and engaging sequence than the original. So this was an easy win for the new version (even if I would have preferred a real kiss).
2024 winsĀ
Also props to wardrobe (HA!) for Noh's off duty outfits. I love his punk goes to Disneyland (with preppy boyfriend) aesthetic.

LS24 Episode 12 & 13 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 25, 26, 27, 28, 34
The away competition, the book carrying, pizza party, meeting the aunt, starting to act like a couple. pun v dadĀ
I like getting more Phun/Dad conflict backstory in the new one.
But I thought that Noh freaking out and coping with what he had to do to break up with Yuri in the older version was more authentic.
That sad Iāve never been wild about how resistant Noh is in the original to kissing and physical intimacy. That still bothers me, even though I know itās a sign of the 2014 times. I like the more comfortable physical affection between the two characters in the newer version.
The confession to friend group was good in both versions but 2014 is ICONIC. The teasing Phun was way better than 2014. Still, the physical intimacy was so much better in 2024 so for me......
2024 wins
(close tho)
The matchup is getting a little uneven at this juncture we seem to be jumping around and borrowing bits from other parts.
LS24 Episode 14 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 35
They moved the Pam bit from the end earlier, which is actually a good idea. Although I wouldāve removed it entirely.Ā
They also substantially took steps to fix Phunās dad character in the new version. I really liked that a lot. (I guess we know which political party that dad belongs to this time.)Ā
Honestly? The teaching part (prior to finals) in the original is one of my favorite mini sequences in BL. But the new version was even better. I didnāt think they were gonna beat it out. But they did.
Them sneaking around to sleep together at the camp never gets old. And I mean that, since itās been 10 years and it still gets me in the throat. So good.
This is a hard call, but if theyāre gonna cut out Noh giving Yuri the shirt, and Yuriās defensive now in the girls bathroom......? The old one is definitely gonna win. As it stands right now Iām gonna give this one to the older version. But a lot of the changes that the new one made I really appreciated so I reserve the right to change my mind after the final ep.
2014 WinsĀ
LS24 Episode 15 versus LS14-s2 Episodes 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 36
Iām quite pleased that they kept most of the stuff in the forest. And I actually like that they swapped it around so that this was the end of the series.
I think it makes for a better more satisfying ending. I like that they didnāt have Pete pine.
But. Still. Heaven forfend they give us an actual kiss. That part I did find very as disappointing. Frankly, these two wouldāve done fine with a smooch.
I donāt know. In the end I think there are points in either version's favor. Neither of these Love Sicks really come out on top.
Theyāre both kind of representative of their time although this new one managed to be oddly nostalgic in ways that didnāt have to do with the original so much as what they chose to keep about that original.
I think, just because of the iconic nature of that last shot and the breaking of the forth wall that I'm going to hand the final to the original.
2014 Wins
The Leader Board
2014 = 5 points
2024 = 7 points
Other Factors
ScriptĀ
When they cut down this show for the new version, we lost some of the greatest and best lines ever scripted in BL of all all time. A few of them couldāve been left in. Because of that, because they didnāt keep the very best parts of the script (which is soem of the best parts of the whole show), despite the fact that they could have......Ā
2014 Wins hands downĀ
Music
The music in the new version was band and unoticicable, but the music in the original was memorable and iconic (if not to my personal taste). Another easy win for the original.
2014 Wins
CASTĀ
Main coupleĀ
I actually think that the leads in the new version are better actors than White & Captain. I know this comes off as heresy. But I just think they are superior in terms of subtlety and nuance. I also think that the new pair had much better chemistry. It feels like these two were workshopped whereas the originals definitely were not. For couple chemistry, especially at the beginning?Ā
2024 WinsĀ
Side coupleĀ
Ohm & Mic had even less screen time than in the original, but not by much. And I have to say partly because of the actor switch between seasons in the original, that I liked this pair a million times better in the new version.Ā
2024 WinsĀ
FriendshipĀ group
The friendship aspect of the music group (Noh and Ohm's relationship in particular) is incredibly important to this story. Without it, the fabric of the piece feels substantially less robust. Therefore the original has to win in this regard.Ā
2014 Wins
NohĀ
There is something endlessly appealing about the clumsy rawness of Captain's performance in this show. His version of Noh is just so utterly endlessly likable. And he has a genuinely adorable and an appealing screen presence. Progress did a good job, but Captain is just a little bit more charismatic.
2014 WinsĀ
PhunĀ
I am a bit of a sucker for a boy whoās good with his eyebrows, and Almond just does better eye work than White ever did. Also he shows and expresses his genuine interest and even attraction in Noh way better, probably in part because of how BL has changed in the intervening decade.Ā But also, sorry White, Almond is just a better actor than you were back then.
2024 WinsĀ
YuriĀ
In the original, Yuri starts out as endlessly annoying, but goes on an incredibly satisfying and quite brilliant character arc to become one of Nohās best friends and one of the great supporters of his growth and a major linchpin of the show. Thereās absolutely no way the newer version could ever compare to the original.Ā
2014 WinsĀ
AimĀ
While I prefer the actress in the original, I really liked the depth that queerness gave to Aim's character in the new version. It made her a lot more relatable and understandable, even though it was a bit of a copout. It also allowed her to stay part of the narrative. I really like having the mean girl be a lesbian. It makes what she and Phun are doing to each other a little bit more like a mutual beard confusion situation and less like cheating. Itās also more feminist than punishing a female for sexual proclivity. Therefore, Iām gonna give this to the new version.Ā
2024 Wins
EarnĀ
This is a really really hard one, since Earn is my favorite character. And possibly one of my favorite characters in all BL. The original source of my ever present second lead syndrome, quite frankly. But, in the end, I canāt deviate, Ngern just set the bar so high. I'm so happy he's returned to our screens.
2014 Wins
PeteĀ
I know heās a minor character, but I alwaysĀ loved poor Pete , and in the original August was one of my favorite actors. (And my number one pick to star in a BL.) I really loved that the new version made both these characters honestly gay, but the original kinda didnāt have that option. Still, despite my love, Iām calling this one a draw since the first Pete won for character and the second Pete won for story.Ā
No winnerĀ
FINAL TALLY
2014 = 11 points 2024 = 11 points
I swear I didn't intend it to come out that way.

X-Men First Class Appreciation Post
I own this on BluRay courtesy of thrifting. Can I just gush about this amazing piece of cinema for a moment? Does anyone still care about this movie?
So much of why this movie works is expectation and precedent. Had these characters been drawn up out of thin air for this movie, never before seen in any other medium, it still would have been amazing, but the history of how this movie came to be just pushes it over the top.
I grew up with the OG trilogy and while I know Last Stand is not good, I used to watch it if I saw it on while channel surfing. I have X2 also on dvd because I saw it while thrifting. Completely new actors, save for the Wolverine cameo, but the same old song, just a new verse. This movie will never exist in isolation, so while Erikās arc is amazing, knowing that people who donāt read comics are seeing the main villain from the movies they know now an anti-hero with a gut-wrenching backstory, whoās right, is fantastic.
Knowing what these characters will come to be later in life as you watch it all slowly fall apart and their fundamental, philosophical divide on the nature of humanity and their place in it, is fantastic.
ā
But beyond the history that bolsters this movie (which I think is the best X-Men movie, above DOFP and Logan), itās just a fantastic screenplay.
The script: Itās such a tight script with only a few odd things here and there, like Emma Frost just existing after sheās served her purpose in the plot. Itās longer than I remember every time I watch it, too, kind of two movies rolled into one that splits into the second half after the CIA base attack. The setup and payoff of Erikās ārage and serenityā moment with the dish, is the highlight. The backdrop of the 60s, weaving in real politics kind of like Forest Gump as if this all really was a shadow war going on, helped it feel more grounded than the plots of the OGs.
The characters: Obviously pulled from decadesā worth of groundwork, First Class does so, so well establishing the dichotomy of Charles and Erik, while also not leaving the rest of the team as one-note (mostly, the tornado wind dude doesnāt have a single line in the whole movie). Shaw as a villain is just hammy enough, with a ridiculously sinister comic-booky plan, itās great.
The music: Standout here being the leitmotif for Erik, which you can hear shift as his attitude shifts from ārageā to āserenityā. The difference in the music when heās on screen between the Villa Gessel bar scene and the sub lift. This is Erikās movie. Charles supporting him, and everyone and everything else supporting them, and the music reflects that.
The acting: A refreshing set of faces that bring a lot of subtlety in gesture, I particularly like Charles feigning massaging his temple at the bar when he meets Moira so he can focus on her thoughts or how is attitude changes around Raven and her ācosmetic issueā. Fantastic representations, both in presence and face, of what a younger version of the OG cast mightāve been like.
The story: Yes the overarching plot of nuclear war is fun and all but the meat of the story is Erik and Charlesā relationship and their approach to mutants in human society, as it always is, and the interactions with the newer recruits. Thereās plenty of quiet moments that take themselves absolutely sincerely, no half-assed awkward jokes to laugh at itself before the audience can because the writers are insecure. You know how it has to end, and this movie doesnāt for one second pretend it wonāt. It never asks if theyāll end up as enemies, it spends the entire time showing you how they became enemies, which is what a prequel should do.
The climax: The last, gosh, 45 mins of this movie? Fantastic. The Americans and the Russians being played as equals but opposite, neither side being vilified because both are victims of Shawās plans. Theyāre just innocents caught in the middle (the sailors on all the boats, not the greedy higher ups). The coin, the setup and payoff and Chekhovās gun of the goddamn coin that Erik first flicks into Shawās pictureās forehead at the start of the movie. Charles screaming as he still holds Shaw frozen because he feels both Shawās pain and the horror of what Erikās doing. Also the choreography incorporating the various mutant powers. All of it. No notes. 10/10.
ā
Smaller things, too. Making sure Charles and Erik have their little chess matches. The multi split-screen during the training montage and the era-appropriate music beyond the score. Dancing around the love triangle between Erik, Raven, and Charles without having it be a huge piece of the plot. Without any romance distracting from the plot, just dressing on the side. Erik being such a tired dad already around the younger mutants. The "yes we do" sonar moment. Raven still getting to use her non-combatant powers in the finale to trick Azazel. All of Michael Fassbenderās languages, rather long conversations that arenāt in English. The nods to the story at large with Charlesā hair comments, Wolverineās cameo, cheeky origins for their hero names, the jet from the OG movies, the other significant characters popping up.
Also the balance between conflicts that do and donāt rely on powers. The final fight isnāt a fistfight and for a comic book climax, thatās kind of rare (and no blue sky beam). This is a climax that can only happen in this story. Erik doesnāt just punch Shaw into submission, he magnetizes a coin through his skull. Thatās how itās done.
I love this movie. I just watched it before making this post and I already want to watch it again.

Summary of RE4R cast meet and greet on Twitch
Finally had time to watch the twitch stream of the RE4R cast meet and greet that aired last week. Here's a quick summary. General: RE4R was made 2 years ago. Everyone in the cast has become one big happy family.
Genevieve Buechner (Ashley): Been acting since a young age. Changed agencies 3 years ago and requested for video game gigs, happy to have landed the role of Ashley. Had to use a lot of her imagination on set after being on TV for years.
AndrƩ PeƱa (Luis): Forged a RE4 replica knife and gifted it to Nick on the stream. (Beautiful knife btw!) Did go to acting school, Luis is his first professional paid acting & voiceover role. He knew he was auditioning for RE4R as they forgot to change one name in the script and he saw the name "Saddler". The OG RE4 was the first RE game he played.
Marcio Moreno (Salazar): Is tall IRL, was on his knees to portray a short Salazar while the other actors were usually on stairs. Lived in Spain for 5 years and almost forgot the actual Spanish accent so he asked his brother's gf who is Spanish to record some lines in a Spanish accent so he could remember the accent again. Usually plays villains or "stereotypical Mexicans" in acting roles and was quite happy to play a Castellan role.
Also played the El Gigante, Verdugo, Dr Salvadore, the ganados, and one of the Bella sisters. He had fun playing monsters.
Christopher Jane (Saddler): Happy to play the villain. Was initially convinced that he was only hired for just the table read and not the actual game. The director had to tell him repeatedly he is playing Saddler for the entire gig.
Jon Bryant (Mendez): Is a singer and his actual voice sounds totally different from Mendez. He does sing in Mendez's voice near the end of the stream which is hilarious. Singing a birthday song in Mendez voice was funny.
Michael Adamthwaite (Merchant): Has English heritage on his mother's side so he channeled some British twang for the role. His maternal grandfather also sells real estate IRL (if Iām not mistaken) so āselling stuffā is in his blood. š Had his 10 year old son on the stream and it was his birthday, what an adorable kid.
Mike Kovac (Krauser): Does stunts professionally, used to be a wrestler. Already had experience handling knives and brought a training knife onto set on the first day. The director was happy and open to more realistic knive movements for the characters.
Based Krauserās voice off the wrestler Jake āThe Snakeā Roberts and also Metallica singer James Hetfield.
Lily Gao (Ada): This is her first time doing motion capture, had a fun time despite having all the gear strapped to all parts of the body. Got stuck to Nick via velcro on the mocap suit a few times lol. Mostly acted with Nick and "a few other people". (Other than sharing scenes with Saddler, cultists, Wesker, and chopper pilot, does this mean DLC on the way??)
Actually got booked for Ada in the WTRC movie before RE4R. Did research on Ada's character despite not playing any video games growing up and admires Ada's strong character. Her agent got an email from the RE4R crew to ask her to audition for the video game role 'cos the RER4 crew saw her role in WTRC. The crew wanted to finally cast an Asian actress in the role. Lily did see what the previous VAs did and found all variations to be beautiful. Lily sent in her audition and got the part.
Raylene Harewood (Hunnigan): Did not meet the rest of the cast while working on this. Was not familiar with the RE franchise. Did one audition tape for Hunnigan by pretending to be on a computer and talking to Leon, and then she got cast.
It's her first time doing motion capture as well. Was mostly in a booth with the camera gear and reacting to Leon's lines that were already recorded.
Craig Burnatowski (Wesker): Nick & Lily were the only two people he has met so far, saw some of the others briefly. This is his second time working on a RE game, his first RE game gig was RE Outbreak. The mocap for Outbreak was vastly different back then.
Did not know what franchise he was booked for until he walked onto set and asked what game it was. š¤£
Steve Kniebihly (Cinematics Director): Have been cinematics director for 20 years, recently did the direction for RE3R, RE4R, RE8. Mostly focusing on directing cutscenes. Did a balance between grounded & realistic scenes and also catering to the fans. The bingo line was actually something else during filming but he decided to ask Nick to try out the old line instead and it was kept in the end.
Even if someone screws up their audition, as long as he can vibe with them, he will go with them instead of people who read their lines perfectly. He also doesn't like assholes and can read people. He wants someone who is nice and can take directions well⦠Capcom also has a say who is cast for the role as well, not just Steve.
Nick Apostolides (Leon): Nick has not met the VAs for Hunnigan & Mike in person. Cooked meals for everyone on set and everyone was raving about his cooking, especially his barbecues. Was asked to come back to play Leon.

OG 911 Character Details from Canon Pt 2
Hi yāall Iām back! I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who reblogged the last details post - I sort of just thought people would like it and it would die, so to see it travel and hopefully reach more writers was so great so thank you again!
Details under the cut since I went a little crazy š
and if this is your first time seeing this, the first part, and any future parts, can be found under this tag here!
Quick note before I get to the details - always, ALWAYS take details from dialogue or plot over details from the set or props if they contradict each other. The writers have the ultimate say over what happens on the show/for the characters, so whatever they say goes, even if it goes against something props has already laid down (eg, Chimās birthday, sorry Libra crew. Heās an Aries or a Pisces). So keep that in mind for the future in case some of these details I have which are from props/set are changed in the future, or if youāve noticed something yourself!
Also if you have questions, I am MORE than happy to answer them, although if you leave them in the tags on this post Iām probably gonna lose them, so if itās something youād genuinely like an answer to, drop it in my inbox! Besides my standard āaskā tags, Iām also tagging asks about canon details with this tag here. Every time I make a big post like this, Iām going to link all the asks Iāve gotten since the last post, but if youāre looking for more info in the mean time, thatās the other spot to look!
Buck has a grill on his patio.
Eddie doesnāt hang Christopherās art on the fridge - instead it is either hung on the corkboard in Chrisā room to the left of the door, or Eddie puts it in an actual frame and hangs it using a hammer/nails in Christopherās room. All the Diaz family has on their fridge is a bunch of bendy people magnets. (I absolutely ADORE him putting all this effort into treating Christopherās art like itās something youād buy from a professional artist).
Info on everyoneās ages can be found here. (Little more discussion of Chimās situation here).
Albert has a bachelorās degree! I donāt know in what though, except that itās some field for which is a Masterās is useful.
Athena was in a sorority in college, Delta Sigma Theta. Their website describes them as ā ...a sisterhood comprised primarily of Black, college-educated women ... [that] considers the issues impacting the Black community and boldly confronts the challenges of African Americans and, hence, all Americans ā, which I love for Athena, and feel is very in-character for her at that time in her life!
Chim is an aviators dude. When he wears sunglasses, theyāre always aviators.
Athena also wears nothing but aviators.
Bobby wears square aviators.
Eddie, on the other hand, always wears Wayfarers.
Buck either doesnāt really like sunglasses or he constantly forgets he owns them, since weāve only seen him wear them once in 60 eps, in a move Iām pretty sure was ONLY for dramatic effect.
Henās sunglasses change style over the seasons like her regular glasses do, but she tends to like browline sunglasses.
Info on Christopherās school can be found here!
There are two colors of dispatch polo, and there doesnāt seem to be any rhythm or reason for who wears what. Maroon - Maddie and Linda. Blue - Josh and May. Jamal has actually worn both maroon and blue, so it doesnāt seem to be TOTALLY set in stone although Iāve never seen anyone else switch. Sue is too badass to wear a dispatch shirt.
Both Bobby and Eddie drive 4 door pickups. Bobbyās is navy. Eddie specifically has a black, 2020 GMC Denali 1500 pickup truck (in case you want to specifically look up what the inside of it looks like or what features it has š)
Info on the 118ās medical certifications can be found here.
Correction to Eddieās living situation from last post: no next door neighbors, but instead UPSTAIRS neighbors. (Pointed out by Abigail in this ask). Also since someone else was wondering the notes of the last post - no, there is absolutely no discussion on the show of whether or not Eddie rents the apartment or owns it. But based on the fact that itās 1) LA and 2) an apartment, my guess would be he rents it.
When Maddie isnāt feeling like herself, she tends to straighten her hair rather than curl it. It seems to be more when sheās uncertain about her place in her own and other peopleās lives, rather than just when sheās simply worried - eg itās straight in 2B, when sheās uncertain if she wants to continue working as a dispatcher/is unsure about her relationship with Chim.
For work, Chim, Eddie and Buck all use black duffel bags with a LAFD patch on the top. Hen uses several different cute bags, and Bobby seems to have a plain black duffel bag.
Watches - Bobby, Athena, Chim, Hen and Buck all wear their watch on their left wrist (but Athena ONLY wears hers for work, she takes it off at home.) Eddie wears his on his right wrist, and Maddie doesnāt wear one.
Chim (and Maddie by default) literally still have the exact same couch as in the pilot. (Which means that Chim has cuddled Tatiana on that couch, AND Albert has had sex on it. TIME TO GET A NEW ONE, BUCKLEY-HANS š)
The 118 has five different rigs - the engine (E118), the ladder truck (T118), two ambulances and the captainās truck. 95% of the time, when the team is chilling in the cab of a rig and chatting (eg the āstuck under a live telephone poleā scene in Jinx), theyāre in the engine, not the truck. (Which I personally learned recently are NOT interchangeable terms!)
Athena and Michael got married when Athena was 37.
If youād like to give Maddie a full name beyond āMaddieā, you should use Madeline. (I know, I know, in 4x04 she says Maddie is the name on her birth certificate, and that you should never use props details if they contradict script details, but I always thought that was a super weird exchange in 4x04 which could be explained by Maddie getting a nickname since she was born when Margaret and Phillip, you know, actually loved their kids and showed it, so of course Buck doesnāt get one, and in 4x04, Maddie was trying to avoid the entire issue of why she got one and Buck didnāt. But! Do what you want, and use Madeline as the full version of Maddie if youād like, since thatās whatās on the BOLO in 2x13 š)
Athenaās call sign is 727 L30, but she doesnāt have a specific squad car - the number changes throughout the series.
Chim really likes chewing gum, but heās the only one out of the entire family!
The station has an Xbox One S, and itās white.
In the real LAFD, there are stations 1 through 114. To avoid confusion while filming on the streets (Iām assuming), our fictional LAFD never uses the number of a real station. So if you want another station for a fic, and you want something that would be real in OUR universe, use the numbers 115 and above. Theyāve gone as high as 221 in our universe.
Battalions - station 118 is in Battalion 7, which is also not a battalion in real Los Angeles. The 118 has interacted w/ Battalion 1, which is a real battalion, but other ānon-real which makes them more likely for our universeā battalions include numbers: 3, 8, 13, 16, 19 and above.
S1 Buck knew the term Jedi, but based on context, didnāt understand AT ALL the context provided by Star Wars, so thereās another edge of his pop culture limits for you.
Chim is the most tech-savvy out of everyone, hands down.
Athena has a VERY active Twitter account.
Abuelaās house number is 8902. I donāt have a street name for you unfortunately though. :/
Athenaās favorite flowers are white roses. None of the other women are really flower people.
Michael likes to wear purple.
When theyāre at a call, Buck does pretty much all of the stuff with the hammer and the saw. Eddie does all the work needed with the drill.
Harry goes to Meadowbrook Elementary.
Buck lives on the fourth floor of his apartment building, across the hall from Apt. 416. The lovely @lovelessmotel found this listing for what is more or less the apartment. What happened was: the set crew rented this apartment for the one episode at the end of s2 when Buck moved in, and then over the summer before s3 built their own set of it, and changed some things - eg giving him an island, and moving the sink to a second counter against the far wall, you can see the changes here in this amazing gif set by the awesome Austen, but the listing should let you click around a little more upstairs and figure out dimensions better than what the show provides!
When Athena and Hen go out to eat together, itās always fast food burgers and fries.
Waffles are Athenaās favorite food, and tiramisu is her favorite dessert.
Every takeout weāve seen Buck eat has always been in a Chinese food takeout container, and we know he likes Thai food the best. EXCEPT! The one time we see him eat takeout with Eddie and Christopher, they have pizza. So take from that what you will......
Eddie has a cell phone and a landline.
Chim is a shameless multiple texter.
Chim and Bobby sleep closest to the door in their respective bedrooms (both right side of the bed if you are standing at the foot, facing the headboard), and Athena and Maddie sleep furthest away from the door (left side).
Some canon last names for other firefighters at the station in case you wanna add more people to a fic - Mitchell, Sanchez, Serrano (woman), Porter, Meyers (woman), Maxwell, Voyta
Hen and Karen really love decorating their house with dark/red wood.
Karen is Mommy and Hen is Mama.
Bobby has a brother, and a grandmother, and thatās literally ALL we know about his family outside of Marcy and the kids.
Evidence points to Eddie being the oldest child in his family.
Karen has multiple brothers (no sisters), but no idea how many - just that one of them is named Trey, and one of them lives in LA and has kids. They might be the same brother and they might not be.
Both Hen and Athena are only children.
Athena has been on the police force for 30 years.
Christopher and Denny are the same age (born in 2011), and Harry is two years older than them.
Michael lives in apartment 308.
The bank in this universe is CalAm.
Hen and Karen have a picture of Denny, May and Harry on their fireplace mantel.
Eddie having a black thumb + a lot of plants in his living room = him buying fake plants bc he likes the aesthetic ⢠or someone (cough Carla cough) is taking care of them for him.
The COVID timeline in OGās universe is fucked up compared to the real worldās, so it shouldnāt be used as a way to measure time! They just throw it in wherever it makes sense for the story they want to tell (eg the vaccines in s4 ep 8), since s3 was both done before COVID hit but also airing while it was happening. It makes absolutely no sense for May to graduate in March nor for Chris to be going to what is specifically labeled summer camp, and the vaccine plotline was INCREDIBLY early, even for real life, so donāt use anything from that as a measure of time. Iāve found except in specific examples, eg the two tsunami episodes, itās very safe to say every episode covers a week - fall holidays on the show line up with their real life counterparts, indicating about the same amount of time is passing for us and them.
On that note - Jee-Yun was born in late January, early February 2021. (Conceived in Pinned, which was end of March/beginning of April, meaning Maddie was around a month along at Mayās graduation in May ā” 42 weeks + 3 days from then = late Jan/early Feb. Which unfortunately means we most likely wonāt see her birthday celebrated on screen. If we assume she was conceived on the date Pinned aired, aka the very sexy hotel scene, then January 21st or 22nd would be Jeeās birthday, depending on if she was born after midnight or not.
Buck has had at least one other Jeep between the one Maddie gave him, and the one he has now, which means that when he needs a new car, he is purposefully choosing Jeeps.
I hope this was all as interesting/enjoyable to you as it was to me! And just to repeat - I love answering questions so pls let me know if you have any at all ā¤

My opinion on the different Dream manipulating someone storylines.
Disclaimer: This isn't meant to shit on anyone as a creator or anyone's acting. This might be kind of negative but isn't meant to be offensive to any DreamSMP creator especially since the main ones I'm talking about are minors. This is just my thoughts and you can obviously disagree. I don't think that Dream as a person is a manipulative person so whenever I mention Dream I mean the SMP character unless I state otherwise.
This is mainly based off of my own experiences as someone who was manipulated and gaslighted for a lot of time by several people and as someone who is doing a human psychology degree.
First thing I want to say is I love Dream as a villain and will be a bit annoyed if they try to redeem him like in every clichƩ film or TV show. The only redemption arc I will accept is Dream being possessed by a Dreamon from way back since that storyline was set up before Dream was considered the main villain. However if the Dreamon storyline is used as a Dream redemption arc it has to be flawlessly written otherwise it will come off cringe.
~~Here's the short version: From best to worst storyline based on my opinion is Ranboo, Tubbo, Wilbur, Tommy, Ghostbur and Techno~~
So the first manipulated storyline I want to talk about is Wilbur. I love the fact that Dream used Wilbur's already messy mental health to play him and turn him against everyone and made him the villain. I think it was the original starting point of Dream's biggest villain trait being a manipulative person. I think it was mainly used to be a lead up to Dream manipulating Tommy and Tubbo. I would call this the Clingyduo test run. If Dream can turn Wilbur against Tommy then he can turn everyone including Tubbo against Tommy. It also helped to explain how Wilbur managed to get all the tnt and how he always managed to sneak into the L'Manberg to set it up as well as clearing up mainly plot holes. The acting was fairly decent especially since it's not scripted and wasn't an intentional plot point. I like the fact it was more behind the scenes manipulation since nobody knew how much Dream was actually controlling Wilbur and most people just assumed Wilbur was just going insane. It made it so nobody was weary of Dream as a manipulator which made the Tommy exile arc more impactful since nobody knew this side of Dream.
Next up is the Tubbo being manipulated by Dream storyline. I like this one mainly because it was from a different angle compared to Wilbur and Tommy's. Dream pretended to be Tubbo's friend to get the disc whilst simultaneously manipulating Tommy to suicide in exile. Dream would talk about how Tommy's been (obviously lying) and saying how much better Tommy and Tubbo are doing apart. Tubbo was getting gaslighted more than straight up manipulated. Dream was saying how much calmer and safer L'Manberg was now that Tommy's gone. Dream's aim with Tubbo was to make him see how much better things were without Tommy and how when Tommy's around Tubbo gets pushed about and Tommy being all of L'Manberg's problems like the wall being built because Tommy burned down George's lesbian mushroom cottage. At the same time as feeding all these ideas and thoughts to Tubbo he playing nice by helping build things, playing games and respecting L'Manberg rules. It's a very sly manipulation because Tubbo obviously told Quackity, Fundy and Ranboo about all his conversations with Dream and it made them slightly less weary of Dream as well as making them think worse of Tommy. It was a good way of showing different kinds of manipulation and how it isn't all painfully obvious. Also Tubbo having a storyline that doesn't revolve around Tommy is an instant win in my book
3rd storyline is Techno and Ghostbur. I'm grouping these together because they were smaller storylines and were similar in tactics. Dream told Techno about The Butcher Army as well as where to get a totem to hold a future favour above his head. Dream knew Tommy was at Techno's but chose to let it play out knowing that Tommy and Techno had very different morals and end goals. Even if they didn't end up butting heads Dream could use his favour to separate Techno and Tommy either by getting Techno to do something to upset Tommy (killing Tubbo) or getting Techno to appear like he's using Tommy to destroy L'Manberg. Making Tommy see Techno as another powerful manipulator. Dream used Ghostburs lack of memory to his advantage. Ghostbur didn't remember that Dream and Wilbur were teamed up or that Dream was using Wilbur which meant that Dream could once again manipulate Wilbur but as less insane, kinder Ghostbur. He used Ghostbur by pretending to be his friend and offering him thing such as food, friendship and shelter to get Ghostbur to trust him so when he tells Ghostbur that he'll (Dream) deliver Tommy's beach party invites Ghostbur sees nothing weird or wrong because to him Dream is helpful. Then he tells Ghostbur to go for a walk so he can make Tommy think that Ghostbur has abandoned him making it so Tommy only has Dream left.
Next is Tommy. Dream used the discs to manipulate Tommy for a long time. When the opportunity of exiling Tommy making him truly alone appeared Dream took it. Then the whole exile arc was Dream manipulating Tommy to the point of him being so isolated and alone he relied solely on Dream until Dream stopped playing games and was ridiculously blunt with Tommy making him want to commit suicide because his last friend wasn't even his friend and he'd lost everything and everyone. I think in my personal opinion this was one of the less believable manipulation arcs nothing against Tommy but it came off as a very textbook/TV show manipulator story where the victim gets close to death only for the manipulator to switch up and start exposing themselves. Manipulators are smart and people around them don't know someone's being manipulated. Yes I enjoyed the storyline but I think it dragged on for too long with no changes and the immediately shifted tones. I would have appreciated it if instead of Dream snapping at the community house and revealing everything in front of everyone, if Dream would start to slip up and Tommy started to notice then Dream slips up Infront of Techno and Phil, then Infront of Tubbo and other L'Manberg members. So it was a domino effect of people realising what was happening instead of everyone finding out at one and having no time to process. Everyone finding out at once because Dream told them sort of ruined it a bit for me. I still think it was an excellent storyline and they both acted their hearts out it just went from a cool individual storyline to a clichƩ villain speech where they reveal everything in time for people to stop all plans. (However bonus points for doing the non canon chill streams with Drista and Mexican Dream in-between)
Finally is Ranboo's. I absolutely love the irl Ranboo and irl Dream dynamic. They are both incredibly good at portraying their characters down to the little details of Dream changing his voice to Ranboo stuttering and shaking. I think it might be my second favourite storyline out of all of them (first being Egg because it's the only storyline to be mainly og members like Sam, BBH, Ant and Punz). I appreciate the amount of work and details that have gone into the story so far, including doing the prison but of a different server so they could use special effects and coding. The story has a very structured and strong foundation compared to every other storyline which is helped obviously by Ranboo being new. Going to be honest the streams sometimes trigger me because of how realistic they are from Dream being the manipulative voice in Ranboo's head to Ranboo having to question what's real and what's fake. Ranboo's convincing himself he blew up the community house purely because of the Dream voice in his head. The fact that both Dream and Ranboo gave had to do content warnings and trigger warnings should be enough to explain how good the acting is. Honestly where are their awards. (Yes this is me praising Ranboo and Dream but I genuinely love this storyline so much eventhough it's another Dream manipulating a minor storyline. It's done so well and you can tell how passionate both Dream and Ranboo are about Ranboo's lore and storyline. Favourite child much)

Highlights and insights from the MELE launch cast & crew reunion panel
[rewatch link] [highlights & insights from the N7 Day 2020 reunion]
In case a text format is better for anyone (in terms of accessibility for example). Cut for length.
Some paraphrasing.
If anyoneās interested in just the line-reading session, it starts at timestamp ~1:04:45.
In addition to the cast and crew from the N7 Day reunion, at this reunion also in attendance were:Ā
Mac Walters (Project Director for MELE, Lead Writer of the og MET)
Melanie Faulknor (Lead Producer for MELE)
Crystal McCord (Producer for MELE)
Fred Tatasciore (Saren)
Seth Green (Joker)
Kimberly Brooks (Ash)
Ash Sroka (Tali)
This was the biggest reunion / meetup of the cast so far, and some of the cast and crew were meeting for the first time here.
Itās been so long since the og MET that PW & KW are getting to watch their kids experience playing it for the first time
JHale doesnāt play but since MELE sheās been sneaking around Twitch jumping into peoplesā MELE livestreams to lurk, watch and comment a bit
What drew Seth to the character of Joker? The whole concept of the game. He likes games and METās mechanics (different trees of adventure, stacking reputation, choices carrying between games) at the time were the most sophisticated that heād ever heard pitched. He thought this was new and exciting and wanted to be a part of it. For the character they cast him based on his personality traits (i.e. he sounds quite similar to Joker personality-wise)
Would Seth ever want to play Joker again if the opportunity presented itself? Sure, he loves the character, and if the writers ever had more things to explore/expand with Joker heād be down for it.Ā
Seth said that itās a different kind of fan that approach him about this project. The fans have spent many many hours in an intimate exchange withĀ āhimā that he hasnāt been a part of, but they experienced it nonetheless.Ā āIāve hugged a lot of strangers, you know what Iām saying? Itās great, you get an interaction with fans that you never get as a performer in any other experienceā
Seth has been a space guy since he was little, it inspires him
With the state of the world the way it is now [covid, masks etc], does Ash think Taliās story will be more impactful now than it was before? Ash hopes so, and that anything they do here will have a positive impact on a bigger level. Ultimately thatās why most of them do what they do, they want to reach people in deep ways. She hopes Tali is an inspiration in courage, bravery, standing up for whatās right and thinking about the greater good
The [MELE I think] dev team had a last team meeting with Greg Zeschuk, one of the founders of BioWare, who they had invited to it. He was regaling them with stories of the inception of Mass Effect.Ā āYou would imagine this sort of well-laid out, drawing boards everywhere... [but] it was basically just a napkin sketch in a Greek taverna with him and Casey goingĀ āWe wanna do a space operaā, and then it took offā
The process of creating lore through development is very organic. A lot of it comes from character and story development. It builds up over the course of the gameās development. They did the codex entries at the end, the idea being that if they saved them for as late as they could, then they could pull from the story, characters and meaningful moments, and build them from there
PW wrote a bunch of the codex entries, elevator banter & lots of little bits of lore. They describe their time on the og MET as being a ābaby writerā. They originally came in after Mac had back surgery and a junior writer was needed to fill in.Ā āIt was really fun, it was us sitting in a room together goingĀ āWhat do you think a hanar or a krogan thinks about this or thatā?ā For a first project for them this was an amazing experience - the world building itself creatively with all these awesome people
They tried to add multiplayer in every game but only got it to work in ME3
They had a lot of plots laid out in ME1 that they calledĀ āglobal plotsā. These were outside the core critical path and would take players from planet to planet, and were sprawling stories. They pulled out a lot of really interesting concepts and ideas from these that did make it into the game, but all of the global plots ended up getting cut due to time. Mac still has old diagrams and spreadsheets which detailed how all of these would have come together
Q. If you all had to take a long-distance road-trip with two squadmates, who would you take and why? PW:Ā āJack and Mordin. Mordin because the drive would never lack for things to talk about at length quickly, Jack because you know you wouldnāt pay for the room. You wouldnāt know how youād get the room, but you wouldnāt be paying for it.ā Courtenay:Ā āIād take Mordin because thereād be singing, and FemShep just to have this thing - happen. In the room that I get for free.ā JHale at this point fistpumped while sayingĀ āYeessā [then I think what she said wasĀ āsteaming hotā]
Seeing as asari are long-lived, how open is Ali to one day reprising her role as Liara?Ā āSheās a character very close to my heart, it was such a great opportunity. In some games that we work on the character has already been created or voiced by someone else, but this was really a group effort. When I first went into the booth, the only thing Iād seen of her was a sort of like, rendering, and we slowly kind of came to her voice and presence. I would love to bring Liara back any time... hey, she can live a really long time guys. :Dā
Caroline and people who do what she does (Creative Performance Director) are so critical to the quality of games. Caroline:Ā āThis group of people are extraordinary. We were lucky to have such an extraordinary cast. Every [recording] session was new and challenging. It was a labor of love. Iām tearing up right now thinking about it. Iām remembering my last session with Jen, she was the last session, just sobbing and sobbingā. When JHale was trying to say the lines of Shepardās goodbye with Garrus, a line hit her like a tonne of bricks and she was in tears and was likeĀ āShepard does not cryā.Ā āIt took me a second, I got it out and took another run at it, it was in there but stuffed down as it should have been, and I finished the line [and there was silence in the booth when usually Caroline would have been talking to give direction or instruction] Did we lose her? Did Skype crash?ā and it transpired that what had happened was that Caroline was in floods of tears
ME was the first time Keythe had ever come across branching dialogue.Ā āNormally when we work on a script and itās from page 1 to 100. In this it was get to page 5, then go back to page 2 and play it a little differently. The skill and the fun and joy of it was to be able to go back and play a scene in a different way, with different writing, with different outcomes. This was not only a challenge but a real treat. So to all the writers who dreamed up how this build-your-own-adventure plays out, you have my undying respect. It was a real pleasureā
VEDA is a proprietary system that BW use to record the dialogue, which is the closest way of having it feel like having people in the booth together (itās all digital and VAs get to hear the line someone else has done in that scene). Caroline really pushed for this because of the amount of time etc that was wasted due to lack of this sort of thing on ME1. William:Ā āIt was a god send for me, thank you, getting to hear a cue from Jen or Mark.ā Ali:Ā āUs being able to bounce off each other helps make it more real. This for me was the most real acting experience on a game I had ever had - the writing being so good, Caroline helping us through, being able to hear each other.ā JHale was always early coming in to record relative to the others so only got to use VEDA a few times - a bit of Liara content and the scene with Anderson towards the end.Ā āThose two times, oh my god it was amazingā. VEDA being a thing also helps from a scheduling standpoint
Seth and Tricia Helfer (EDI) only got to be in the booth actually together 1 time, to record/shoot a piece of promotional video.Ā āWe actually got to record a scene together and we were likeĀ āoh my god this is the best thing everā. It was great, even though I had to stand on a stool. Sheās the bestā
Seth:Ā āAs an actor, the kind of opportunity to do this kind of material in games just didnāt exist.ā Fred:Ā āOh, never! I had never had a villain part that was complicated like that. In a game? Never before, it was really interestingā
Raphael always goes back to the fact that ME brought more women into gaming than any other game before it.Ā āThe writing and the complexity of the relationships gave us so much ballastā.Ā āThis set this apart from running, shooting, gunning, lootingā
JHale:Ā āWhat I noticed in the times before when I got to be around fans, there was a huge hunger among women in the gaming world for something they could really jump into. They were starving for something which fed them what they deserved and neededā
Mac:Ā ā[praising Caroline] Caroline would often come to us as writers and challenge us and say, as an example, āDo we really need another male character to do this? Why are we writing another male character for this?ā She pushed that very early and to the betterment of everything we createdā
PW:Ā āKarin and Cookie and all of the editors across the trilogy, [were critical in] making sure that Shepard sounded consistent - [especially since] we had a large writing team, writers came and went, Mac is the only one with a significant writing contribution on each of the gamesā
PW: ā[on game dev] Itās a process of getting hundreds of people pointed in the same direction, all believing that this is something worth doingā
Ash:Ā āHaving all the different possibilities and avenues, going back to play them all out in the different ways [really helped to round the character of Tali out and make her feel like a natural person]ā.
VAs only get paid for the original recording sessions, not again (as in they donāt any royalties or anything from something like the remaster)
In MELE, they left all the original credits at the end of each game in
Fred:Ā āItās creating in five dimensions [because of all the outcomes and relationships etc]ā. Seth:Ā āThe cool thing is that the audience feels that. Theyāre immediately struck by how dense, thought-out, prepared and planned the entire universe isā
How was it for the new MELE devs coming onto this? Crystal:Ā āI knew it [the series and fansā love for it] was big, but I didnāt know it was BIG! Working on MELE there was this infectious excitement. Being part of it was so exciting.ā Melanie:Ā āI came on at ME3, I had a 3 or 4 year honeymoon period with BioWare. Coming onto MELE, Iām getting really emotional. One of my first meetings originally was going into a cinematic review for an epic Tali scene in ME3ā. Crystal:Ā āOn MELE, we had an hour or 2 every day where the team came together to play the game. In those reviews, a lot of the devs who worked on the original would tell all these stories. It was really fun to hear all the inside stories on MEās creation and be a part of thatā
DC:Ā āShould this unit get vaccinated?ā Ash:Ā āOf courseā
How do they think ME will be viewed in the next 10-20 years, what do they think its legacy will be? A piece of history, ground-breaking. It broke down some barriers and opened doors for people. Itās a powerful, powerful community. Itāll continue to age quite well and be enjoyed by a new generation, itās original and evergreen and thereās a lot in it that people go back to. Thereās a lot of universal things in it (personal experiences, like there will always be love, people fighting to belong, trying to make sense of their pasts etc)
JHale and Alix did the āI love you Shepard, now go save the world againā Shep-Sam exchange and both got teary. It was then Sethās turn to line-read: āJesus Christ, now that Iām good and choked up, fucking messā. Ali was also actually crying from it
Seth: āIt canāt be overstated, this community is so large and global, it is one of the most powerful fandoms that Iāve ever been greeted with. Thank youā. Ash:Ā āItās the most amazing group of fans ever. Weāre all so gratefulā
Some funny anecdotes/stories:
PW didnāt realize that Alix could do different accents. They remember a time when they were listening in the booth and an Alliance soldier was complaining about the gear had been given. They saidĀ āWow thatās really good, who is that?ā and the VO producer saidĀ āThatās Alix, Patrickā,Ā ābecause she wasnāt doing her [normal British accent but was doing a Californian accent instead]. Alix roasted me later for not recognizing her voice and never let me heard the end of itā
Alix:Ā ā[on Samās toothbrush] Carolineās like,Ā āSo then she pulls her toothbrushā and Iām likeĀ āWhat? Sorry? A toothbrush?ā and obviously itās funny now as everyone knows that Samās thing is her toothbrush. Carolineās likeĀ āYeah, youāve gotta like, flirt, over the toothbrushā and Iām likeĀ āWho wrote this - a frickin toothbrush, are you kidding me? Really guys?ā ANYWAY. I was wrong and it worked. :Dā
Fred:Ā āI remember a 12 year old kid coming up to me and being like [flat tone] āOh yeah. I killed youā.ā
Keythe:Ā āThe other assasin I play is Kellogg in Fallout 4. People come up to me likeĀ āOmg. I love you so much. And then I fucking KILLED you!āā
Courtenay once went out to dinner in NZ with a few prominent people from theĀ Game of Thrones cast. āEveryone around was making a big deal out of it likeĀ āOmg, itās so-and-so from GoTā. I was feeling a bit likeĀ āHi, Iām here, just nobodyā. And I looked around in the restaurant and there's one guy in the corner and heās got an N7 shirt on and heās just looking at me like [knowing look, does a peace sign]. And Iām likeĀ āI got one! I love you guys!āā
PW:Ā āI have a question for the cast members, because I donāt know if JHale has done this to all of you or if she just does it to the devs. Show of hands if Jen has ever made you do push-ups.ā JHale:Ā āItās just you guysā
Karin:Ā āOne of my favorite editing files that I ever had was a ME file. It was before Seth was coming in for a session. I opened it up and it was just 20, 25 lines with the word āShitā, over and over again, and I was like, āThis file is perfect, I donāt need to do anything to it, have fun!āā
Seth:Ā āDidnāt we do a track thatās like 60 seconds of laughing? Escalating laughing? I donāt know about other actors but for me getting into a laughing fit is kind of like trying to get into a crying fit, it takes the same level of commitment, you start to follow a path until like youāre hysterically uncontrollably laughing. I remember looking through the glass, and Iām deep in it at this point, and I make eye contact, and I can see from the other side of the booth and theyāre like [making āokay you can stopā now gestures] - āLike thatās plenty, we got itā and I was likeĀ āokay, okay [dying]āā
JHale:Ā āThe craziest thing Mark and I had to deal with was how many times we had to sayĀ āI should goāā. Mark:Ā āWe also, Caroline and I tended to use that as short hand when I needed to go to the bathroomā
The panel host:Ā āThe first time I interviewed Ali was a decade ago. She did theĀ āIāll flay you alive with my mindā line halfway through, it was my first interview and I literally fell out of my seat [from being star-struck]ā
Ash line-read Taliās drunk omni-tattoo scene and in response DC saidĀ āI totally get why people wanna romanticize all these characters :Dā. Karin:Ā āWeāve had more than one person come up to us and show us actual tattoos that looked like thatā

Higurashi Gou final thoughts pt. 1
(Spoilers go under a cut:)
Taking this by arc:
Onidamashi-hen: The best executed first cour arc by a significant margin.Ā Probably not coincidentally, it stays the closest to the structure of the OG arc and thus keeps more of OGās tension ratchet than the other Gou arcs.Ā I have two main issues, and Iām pretty sure both of them can be firmly pinned on the anime staff rather than Ryukishi07 himself.Ā First, it pulls its punch on the stealth sequel aspect.Ā Iām not entirely sure that going for a stealth sequel was the correct decision (itās a cost/benefit tradeoff), but if you do youāre going for the wham of the sequel reveal, and the anime undercut this by putting the Rika/Hanyuu scene at the start of episode 2 rather than the end of the arc.Ā Second, it overdoes the final Rena fight, making it so over-the-top that itās difficult to take seriously.Ā Neither of these issues exist in the manga (which has a believable amount of stabbing and has the Hanyuu scene at the end of the arc where it should be), and in the former case we also have a Ryukishi07 interview indicating that this was a change requested by the anime staff, so this goes on them.Ā (Interestingly, by way of contrast I think this approach might actually work well for the Mieruko-chan adaptation that Passione has coming out later this year.)
Watadamashi-hen: The core issue here (above and beyond fridge logic after Satokowaski-hen) is the finale, which landed like a wet fart.Ā It both escalates from zero to 100 *way* too fast and has the worst case of ātell donāt showā in the neo-question arcs - we learn about every single dead body in the arc from Ooishiās end-of-arc narration.Ā Thatās relatively defensible for three of those bodies, which we only learn about secondhand even in OG Watanagashi-hen (though IIRC in OG two of those bodies have foreshadowing from rumors earlier in the arc, and unless Iām forgetting something thatās absent here), but all five?Ā Yes, keeping Keiichi locked away from the final showdown removes fridge logic issues, but you have prominent security cameras - you can at least have him see the aftermath of the showdown on the screens (and freak out because of it).Ā Adding insult to injury, the Keiichi vs. door scenes are also so over-the-top as to damage willing suspension of disbelief.Ā The 0-to-100 issue is harder to fix, because the one thing Watadamashi did right was put the Rika-loses-it scene as an end-of-episode cliffhanger, and āKeiichi et. al. are about to enter the Saigudenā probably wanted an end-of-episode cliffhanger as well for discussion purposes (it might have been able to get away with using the commercial break).Ā The simplest fix is the same oneĀ @tsuisou-no-despairā floated: cannibalize an episode off of another first cour arc.
Tataridamashi-hen: Amusingly, I think Gou has retained OGās tradition of having the Tatari- question arc being the weakest question arc.Ā As I see it there are two interlocking core issues here which boil down to the same issue.Ā Tataridamashi-hen goes for a very unconventional method of building tension: it doesnāt, instead relying on the viewerās realization that something bad has to be coming to do so for it (the old āthat canāt be right, weāve still got twenty minutes left in the episodeā reaction I more commonly associate with things like police procedurals).Ā The problem is that this runs into the Endless Eight lesson: even flawless metatext should not be used at the expense of enjoyability of the actual text.Ā And while the arc got some leverage out of āwhen exactly is this going to diverge?ā, thereās a point much like Endless Eight itself when you realize where itās going to diverge (i.e, not until the end) and that until then youāre sitting through the same events you remember from OG.Ā It works about as well as it did for Haruhi.Ā (Unless youāre a new viewer, but in that case staying too close to Minagoroshi-hen has other issues.)Ā Worse, unlike Minagoroshi-hen itself (which did something similar to build tension but a) non-source readers hadnāt seen it before so it wasnāt foregone the same way and b) you had several more episodes after the subarc for the main event) the arc ends almost immediately after this.Ā (The simplest fix here might have been cutting down on the arc time by speedrunning Minagoroshi events, reducing the amount of time youād have to wait.Ā You could even have a couple of obstacles collapse faster than expected; this late in the first cour it would serve as foreshadowing for Satokowashi-hen, and would also deal with unfortunate implications concerning the villageās prejudice considering that the staff knew Satoko was going to be the culprit.Ā Trimming an episode would also neatly solve the issue of where to get an additional episode for Watadamashi-hen from!)Ā The good news is that the final confrontation is the best of the first cour arcs (itās somewhat more realistic than the other two, actually not that far behind some of the more memetastic OG moments except for Teppeiās eyes, and not showing Ooishiās rampage is forgivable given that they knew they would be actually showing it in Nekodamashi-hen), but thatās damning with faint praise.
Nekodamashi-hen: The best Gou arc.Ā The episode 15 jump cut is the stuff of legends and the best scene in the show by a sizable margin (the one thing the director does well is black humor, it seems), while the rest of the arc isnāt as good, itās far shorter on demerits than the rest of the show.Ā The one really, really obvious demerit is that they really didnāt need to spend half an episode on the intestines-ripping scene (if Ryukishi07ā²s comments are to be believed, once again weāre pinning this on Passione), but effects on my stomach aside there are worse issues to have.
Satokowashi-hen: And here we have the other side of the coin; this is the worst Gou arc, and itās the one spot where Iām pretty sure Ryukishi07 himself gets some of the blame.Ā Thereās a few issues here.Ā First, the single most obvious dangling plot thread from Matsuribayashi-hen (Satoshiās fate) is effectively dropped despite being directly relevant to the other dangling thread that was picked up (how Rika treats Satoko and vice versa); this includes missing an opportunity to show Satokoās character arc through different responses to learning about Satoshiās condition.Ā Secondly and compounding, Shion is also dropped along with the Satoshi thread; AIUI this is kind of understandable given final Satoko/Shion interaction in the Matsuribayashi-hen VN (which IIRC never made it into the anime), but dropping her without explanation still leaves something that looks awfully like a plot hole since a single conversation with Shion is potentially enough to stop the events of this arc from ever happening.Ā (āCharacter X had information that would have stopped the tragedy but never had an opportunity to tell anyoneā is a classic tragedy trope, but you should really have a *reason* for that character never having the opportunity as opposed to just having them vanish without explanation.)Ā Finally, thereās just the general issue that while the ending points for both Rika and Satoko are reasonable the path they take to get there just doesnāt quite add up.Ā I can kind of get there via a combination of āblame the directorā (the loops montage could and should have easily shown Satokoās deteriorating mental condition as she watched - using interlaced cuts to her face with changes in facial expression is a classic method) and mind caulk (Rika was exaggerating for effect when she described her desire to go to St. Luciaās as a long-time thing and it only really kicked in after Matsuribayashi-hen, Satoko originally only planned to suicide in Matsuribayashi-2 and only took Rika out with her as a crime of passion after feeling betrayed, hence the next few loops lacking her murdering Rika) but being mind-caulkable is not the same as actual good execution.
I mean, Iāve banged on this drum before, but... the basic concept works.Ā Really well.Ā Satokoās abandonment issues and Rikaās treatment of Satoko are two of the major dangling plot threads from OG Higurashi (*eyes both Minagoroshi-hen and anime-only Yakusamashi-hen*).Ā It makes perfectly good sense that the latter comes back to bite Rika, especially in a sequel literally titled ākarmaā.Ā I already suspected Satoko was on the autism spectrum based on OG, her being ADHD in addition to or instead of that makes perfectly good sense given those conditions often overlap.Ā Rikaās desire to escape the well morphing into a desire to escape Hinamizawa entirely?Ā Sure, just present it as that.Ā Satoko steadily losing her support network as her friends are torn away from her by changing life circumstances, then going to a boarding school that she hates, that strips the rest of her support structure for her and starts to take even her one remaining friend (her childhood friend, no less - and one that Satoko is at this point attracted to romantically in true osananajimi fashion) away from her, and then starting to snap with some prodding from a certain witch?Ā Thatās a compelling story idea!Ā But as present it just doesnāt quite work, and thatās on the execution.
(Side note: I wonder if some of what went wrong with Gou was just the kind of production issues endemic to modern anime, amplified by the pandemic.Ā I remember at least one comment/blog post somewhere in the wake of WEPās issues noting some of the effects that production issues can have on an anime, and one of the things they noted was excessive slavishness to the source material as a time-saving measure; that sounds awfully similar to some of Ryukishi07ā²s comments about how he didnāt expect Passione to take his script quite so literally, and to my admittedly untrained eye it sure looked like there were a bunch more other animation studios than usual mentioned in Gouās credits...)
Final score: depends on your exact rating system, but given the range Iām looking at I canāt see how I can give it any score other than 3.4/5 for obvious reasons.Ā (Pending Sotsu, anyways.Ā Itās possible that Sotsu will resolve some of these issues - in particular, Ryukishi07 always has struck me as the kind of author who would get a kick into baiting us into falling for the same twist twice; itās not impossible that the apparent lack of unreliable narrators so far is a double bluff, and that could affect the āquestion arcā scores in particular.Ā More on this in a forthcoming solution space post.)

[Behind-the-Scenes] HELIOS Rising Heroes: Animation Showcase
āHELIOS Rising Heroes: Animation Showcaseā is an English voice fan project I worked on all by myself (barring voice actors) that took five months to make.
The original plan was to make just one video, but it ended up being eighteen of them!
Link to YouTube playlist:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0UbdFyWSx0n_ewcd-t0iAB0adGe5lghH
In this write-up, Iāll be discussing details about the response to the project, recording all the footage, video editing, voice acting + audio processing, script translations + rewriting, which fonts were used, and even the emulator used. Iāve organized it into sections to make it easier to find certain things. Also, this is directed to English-speaking readers since Iām not gonna bother translating the entire thing to Japanese.
THE DREAM
I wanted to make this fandub ever since the game was released (in Aug 2020). I just knew that English voices would be extremely fitting to the world of HELIOS with a setting inspired by America and characters, places, and terms mostly in English. I was disappointed to hear that the studio behind the game, Cacalia Studio of Happy Elements K.K., had no interest to localize their games outside of Asia, which meant the chances of an English dub, let alone a global release were close to zero.
I was able to understand how to play the game thanks to the fan translators, some of which came from other Cacalia Studio games, and got inspired to continue learning Japanese (there was a previous attempt to translate Japanese lyrics years back).
What I thought was just the silly dream of one overseas playerās became something much more!
THE TIMELINE (BRIEF OVERVIEW)
I played the game for about two months prior to working on the project. Before starting the project, I had to sort out graphical and technical issues on my end first as I was unable to play the game smoothly until November.
November 2020
Finding all the in-game battle lines
Writing transliterations (romaji) of lines by ear
Learning and translating lines to Japanese
Started recording footage
December 2020
Further translation revisions
Held a casting call
Script rewriting and finalizing
January 2021
Completed casting
Started video editing (learning process)
Started audio processing
Recorded more footage
February 2021
Recorded more footage
Japanese script revisions
Finished working with VAs
Finished audio processing
Continued video editing
Published Preview video
March 2021
Recorded the last of the footage
Japanese subtitle revisions
Finished Showcase video
Finished Individual battle clips
Gave recommendations to VAs
The exact start and end dates were Nov 1st, 2020 to March 31st, 2021. Pretty neat.
RESPONSE TO THE PROJECT
I was absolutely shocked with the response to the preview video, which at the time of writing has just hit 10K views and almost 600 likes on Twitter and YouTube combined. Not bad for an unpaid hobby fandub (a joke only I find funny...) of an otherwise ānicheā Japanese-only mobile game.
As of Apr 4th, 2021 - Thank you so much. This is more than I couldāve asked for.
The preview video blew up way more than anticipated, setting up for a bit of disappointment when the Showcase video was released.
The amount of views I expected for this project within its prime were a couple hundred views, so Iām content that the Showcase video reached that amount (it had ~500 by the end of March).
The expectations for the battle clips were an average of 100 views and a handful of likes - and each one got roughly that amount (or more) - so Iām also content with that, especially for something thatās just ābonus materialā.
I tried my best to promote this project on Twitter with three main tweets. My one regret with promoting the project was making the second tweet after publishing the Showcase because the Japanese I wrote there was pretty terrible (as I was all worn out from editing and was in a haste to tweet about it). I tried to make up for it in a follow-up reply the next day, but it was too late. I was satisfied with how my third and final tweet and thread of battle clips turned out, but it sadly didnāt garner much attention. A reason for this was probably due to bad timing. I knew that the timing of the last tweet was awful as HeliosR did something special for April Foolsā day, plus the Easter event was being hyped around the same time, but I really wanted to finish up the project within March (my timezone, at least. It was already April 1st in Japan).
It was important to also make the videos accessible to the Japanese audience as they were a large portion of the viewers. This proved to be a challenge as my knowledge of Japanese is limited - at least for me, itās easier to translate grammar-correct Japanese than it is to write my own sentences.
I ultimately decided against posting any of the videos on NicoNico because I wasnāt sure about Japanās laws regarding copyrighted material. I knew it was already risky enough posting on social media and didnāt want to take any additional risks.
ABOUT THE FOOTAGE (1) ā HEROES & ATTACK ORDER
HeliosR uses a gacha system, so to be able to even make something like this, youād first need access to all 16 ā
4 OG Heroes in the game.
I had them spread across five different accounts, four of which were reroll accounts. Asakou from the Cacalia RPG server gave me two of those accounts, and I rerolled myself for Keith and Ren during their Birthday Orders (one free 10-pull per account). Every account is also given a free ā
4 selector ticket which I made good use of.
3,000 rubies (in-game currency) were sacrificed to pity the ā
4 OG Dino when he was released in December just for the sake of the fandub!
Besides covering all of the Heroes, I also needed to play through each account to unlock certain story chapters, event stages, and evolve the Heroes for their shiny evolved CG art. Some of the Expert event stages (that had the Nighttime backgrounds) proved difficult to clear with a new account.
When using skills, the order of the Heroes were edited such that everyone was able to have the majority of their lines used at least once. All Heroes had two āreceiving supportā lines, two or three āsupportingā lines, and two or three āskills against the enemyā lines. Some of the extra lines didnāt make it into the Showcase, so they were used for the individual clips instead.
I shouldāve used Gray instead of Marion for the account that had Billy because you can see Marionās sprite in Billyās image. xD
In the Showcase, you may notice that the "Union Attacks" consist of all the ā
4 CG images. These were spliced together; I never had all four Heroes of the same sector on the same account. For example, I would have Gray, Asch, and Jay on one account and Billy on another account, recorded their ā
4 Bursts separately using the same background (from unlocking the Expert stages on both accounts), and then edited all the footage together.
Jayās Burst was later re-recorded with a different attacking order so that he wouldnāt link to Billy.
It was also important to keep the same order of Bursts as well as use all four Bursts in the same turn. The ā
4 Burst order was usually determined by who didnāt link skill with one another (with the exception of East sector as I was still figuring things out) because I didnāt want the link skill activation getting in the way of the animations.
As a little bonus, I also showed off the exclusive damaging skills of the Chapter 6 and 7 ā
4 frames that I was lucky enough to pull from the gacha: Marionās "Invitation To The Danceā (roses), Faithās āSynthetic Vibesā (beats), and Dinoās āCrow Mark Dead Endā (claw marks).
ABOUT THE FOOTAGE (2) - BACKGROUNDS
Since I didnāt want to use the same battle music and backgrounds for all of the videos, I decided to use some of the themes from the limited-time events which went as far back as Nov 2020.
Each background has three variants (Daytime, Afternoon, Nighttime) and so I carefully picked them based on the colours. I ended up using mostly Expert stages - or Nighttime backgrounds, since Daytime versions were only used for Normal difficulty stages (which are too easy to clear).
The backgrounds used for the Showcase, all from limited-time events.
I decided to mix up some of the Heroes from other sectors in the individual clips for fun, basing it off of their relationships with each other. Using South sectorās background for Gastās clip was a purposeful choice because I already used the North sectorās background for the other three North sector Heroes. I made sure to include Akira and Will of the South sector in Gastās clip so it didnāt feel too random!
The only default background I didnāt use was Chapter 2ās because I already made use of the Casino theme for OG West sectorās individual clips. (...Plus I didnāt really like that background :p)
Hereās a list of all the backgrounds I used:
Escape the Prison (Nov 2020) - used for Showcase [EAST]
Mission of CASINO (Nov 2020) - used for Junior, Faith, & Keith clips
HAPPY NEW YEAR SHOW! (Jan 2021) - used for Showcase [SOUTH]
Help! Cooking Hero! (Jan 2021) - used for Will and Oscar clips
A Sweet Spell Garnished With Chocolate (Feb 2021) - used for Showcase [WEST]
Grandiose Chinoiserie (Mar 2021) - used for Showcase [NORTH]
The Hero Is A Detective!? (Mar 2021) - used for Billy and Jay clips
Default backgrounds: Chapters 1, 3, 4 (shared with 7), 5 (shared with 6) - used for all other clips
The Christmas event was the only event that went unused during the Nov 2020 - Mar 2021 period.
I didnāt record the East sector event (Christmas) in Dec 2020 because I was actually too busy with the casting call! I also didnāt think I would make use of it after already recording the Prison event intended for East sector. The project ended up taking so long that it actually benefited from having a wider selection of events over the months, which also showcased the beauty of the game.
ABOUT THE WORK & VIDEO EDITING
Hardware:
A decent computer.
A pair of no-name earbuds I found while cleaning out some junk.
Software:
All FREE!
*Thereās a catch
NoxPlayer* emulator (debloated, read more about in its own section) and Open Broadcast Studio were used to record game footage and sounds.
Davinci Resolve was the main tool I used to edit the videos. A very demanding program that I only recommend using if you have a mid to high end computer.
MediBang was used to edit some of the art like the logos, but I ended up using Resolve for the majority of the graphics, including the thumbnails.
Audacity and Cakewalk were used to edit audio.
Many aspects for this project took longer than I had hoped because there was a learning process with using Resolve for the first time. Iām also a bit of a perfectionist, re-exporting videos tons of times just to fix small mistakes. Lastly, the time it took to make all the fancy effects was longer than Iād estimated. As the project dragged on, there was pressure to not delay the release of the videos any longer than I had to. A lot of this was self-imposed though.
There were days where I just did something else other than work on the project, which helped re-fuel my motivation when I decided to pick it up again.
Pretty much everything in the videos were taken from the game itself. The only graphics that were taken from the official website instead were the Substance symbols (the pictures with HERO at the bottom).
Additional overlay graphics were custom-made. It took two whole days to make the 3-second long sector intros and another two days to create and animate the arrow graphics for the credits. These were made using Resolveās fusion and colour features. Much of the edit was inspired by the official HeliosR designs.
Left: Official in-game graphics // Right: My fanmade video (sector intros)
Sector intros were inspired by the four Heroes version of Union Attacks in-game.
Left: Official HeliosR video // Right: My fanmade video
The Preview video took after the ā
4 Burst mini-previews as part of HeliosRās promotional campaign, uploaded before the game was released.
Left: Official HeliosR video // Right: My fanmade video
The credits at the end of the Showcase were inspired by a different video, this time being the Half-Anniversary video.
The Showcase - which had a duration of 29:07 - was 11.5GB large in size. It took almost three hours to render (which I re-rendered to fix things) and two DAYS to upload to YouTube because I experienced multiple uploading interruptions. Itās a good thing you can re-upload the same video to continue where you left off without having to restart the entire process.
The individual hero clips didnāt take as long to make (but they took a while anyway as I re-uploaded some of them to fix minor mistakes). The recommendations for the VAs that were given alongside the publishing of each clip also spanned over another five days as I wanted to personalize and think about each one carefully.
A pretty frustrating part of the project was the prevalent lag when recording footage, which may have been due to the emulator and/or some technical things on my end. The Prison event used for the Showcase was the very first one I recorded when I wasnāt as aware about the lag, and so it suffered a bit as a result. The Union Attacks were the worst offender. I re-recorded the same battle scenes several times each just in case, then went through the footage frame-by-frame in Resolve and chose the ones with the least amount of lag. If all of the recorded footage suffered lag at different parts, I would even compare and splice together parts of them that didnāt lag. There was also audio lag (a known issue of NoxPlayer) so I had to move all of the audio forward by 1/3 of a second.
By the end of the project I had over 200 videos of game footage with a total size of over 24GB and a total duration exceeding 9 hours, not even counting all the ones that went unused.
The Heroes werenāt the only ones who evolved. MS Paint not recommended for thumbnails.
Overall, (despite the few mistakes here and there that nobody other than me would notice) I was happy with how everything turned out, down to the gorgeous thumbnails! I am an artist, after all~ :^)
I also have much more respect for video editors. They should be called VIDEO ANIMATORS!
ABOUT THE VOICES & AUDIO PROCESSING
When making a dub, it doesnāt mean we want to replace or best the original language, we just want to give it a new interpretation. In fact, the charactersā voice descriptions and direction provided in the scripts were heavily inspired by the seiyuu (Japanese VAs) and how they performed their lines.
Honestly, this was THE dream cast!! Some of the VAs had comparably similar voices to the Japanese ones which was an amazing coincidence. The ones that may not have sounded as similar had unique interpretations that I felt still suited their characters well. I also chose actors based on their performance, and everyone delivered!
Voice actors were not expected to imitate the Japanese voices and lines. They were provided direction and reference videos to help time their lines, but were otherwise given liberty when it came to their own interpretations.
You shouldnāt hear any jarring differences between the voice actorsā microphones and setups. Thatās because I took the time to process the audio. Faithās audio was submitted to me post-processed so it was used as a guideline for what the audio quality should sound like. Some of the others had comparable quality to Faithās, so I only added compression to balance their volumes. Most of them benefited from equalization of various levels - this took some experimenting back and forth with the frequency spectrum. Lastly, a couple more benefited from clip fixing, noise gate, de-essing and/or click removal. It was very important for VAs to have at least decent room treatment; while small differences between mic frequencies can always be altered, echoes are difficult if not impossible to remove completely.
I feel that audio engineering is highly underrated and more important than ever as voice actors continue to record from home studios.
And in case it wasnāt already clear, this was purely voluntary work. No VAs or myself were paid to contribute anything for the project. Though, the experience alone was worth more than any amount of money.
ABOUT THE SCRIPT & TRANSLATIONS
HELIOS Rising HeroesććØćŖćŖć¹RćEnglish Translation - Battle Lines
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ImWrAfvS_hgp6qr5qt30vCP63uHEk2o79uqY0h-3wL4/edit?usp=sharing
This spreadsheet consists of the literal translations for all the battle lines I could find in the game (it still isnāt done -yet-, plan to finish it when I get the chance). These are only fanmade and are not guaranteed to be accurate, especially as I wasnāt able to find another translator to help or proofread it.
After translating the lines, I made many additional revisions from the literal meanings such as changing the intention of the line slightly to flow better, having extra words added in to provide more context, or changing them completely. Thus, the lines used in the video are NOT literal TLs!
Another thing of note that may not seem apparent, but is what I feel an important aspect of character writing, is to remain completely unbiased towards all the characters. Personal favourites aside, I ensured that every Hero had their own spotlight as well as lines written in a way that remained faithful to their personality, no matter how unlikeable they were (looking at you, Asch Albright).
Even after giving voice actors their scripts, I made another revision in February after the release of the aforementioned Half-Anniversary video with the transcriptions for the ā
4 Bursts, which is when I discovered a couple of mistakes with my transcriptions. This resulted in me having to edit out a part of one of the voice actorsā lines (Billyās āString Showā line in his ā
4 Burst) because of a translation mistake! Iām really glad I was able to double-check the correct lines before releasing the Preview video, or it wouldāve looked pretty silly to Japanese viewers.
The last set of revisions were just minor edits to the subtitles (such as using kanji instead of kana) while I was working on subtitling all the videos.
Notable changes included:
WILL SPROUT
During attacking combo
Original line:
tanonda zo... ike! / āCounting on you... Reach!ā
Rewritten line:
āIāll become stronger... For everyone!ā
The rewritten line is a condensed version of one of Willās ā
4 Evolved CG lines (āFor everyone... Iāll become more and more stronger!ā). He had āReach!ā in both his attacking combo and regular Burst, so I gave him an extra unique line.
ā
4 Burst
Original line:
warui kedo... kore de oshimai da! / āSorry, but... it ends with this!ā
Rewritten line:
āIām sorry, but... itās over for you! HAAAH!ā
There were a couple of oversights I made with the script, and this was one of them that didnāt fit the animation properly. Props to Ryan for coming up with the extra shout at the end! So yeah, we kinda winged this line.
OSCAR BALE
When using skills against the enemy, during attacking combo, and in the ā
4 Burst (repeat line)
Original line:
osoi! / āSlow!ā
Rewritten lines:
āToo slow!ā / āYouāre slow!ā / āOver here!ā
Rewritten simply because I wanted to minimize repeated lines and change things up.
GAST ADLER
When supporting an ally, and during attacking combo
Original lines:
tetsudau ze / āIāll help (you).ā
itchouagari / āAll done.ā
Rewritten lines:
āIāve got your six.ā
āTarget eliminated.ā
I wanted to add in a few military terms to reflect Gastās background.
FAITH BEAMS
ā
4 CG line (for the credits)
Original line (literal TL):
āItās not terrible or evil, right? Surely this isnāt punishing... I guess?ā
Rewritten line (with āmistakeā):
āIām not doing anything horrible or evil, alright? This is just business as usual... I suppose?ā
Faithās CG line had a mistake when I first translated and handed it off to his actor. I accidentally wrote āoshigotoā (work/business) instead of āoshiokiā (punishment). The original has him pretty much saying the same thing twice anyway, so I would say the intention was still retained.
KEITH MAX
When supporting an ally
Original line:
gambare yo~ / āDo your best~.ā or āHang in there~.ā
Rewritten line:
āStay alive, would ya~?ā
I know Keithās meant to say āseriousā things in a sarcastic or snarky way, but I just had to add in this fun line!
DINO ALBANI
Using skills against the enemy
Original lines:
haa! / āHaah!ā
hei! / āHey!ā
Rewritten lines:
āI can do this!ā
āLeave it to me!ā
The Japanese lines for Dinoās offensive skills were rather basic, with the third and unchanged line āHere goes!ā being a repeat line Dino also says when attacking. I wanted to give him some more lines - as standard as they are - to show his personality a bit more, along with having an additional fun West sector interaction. The changes fit the animations better too. (I actually had his VA say the "Haah!" line, but ended up using a different take of āHere goes!ā in place of it.)
ABOUT THE FONTS
Fonts were taken from various sources and were either FREE for personal use or had an open font license. I didnāt have access to the commercial fonts (such as Futura) used in-game, so these were the following fonts I made use of:
Techna Sans looked similar enough to Futura when capitalized, and still looked decent in lowercase.
Jost* is a font that was derived from Futura. Some of its uppercase letters are sharper than Futura's, but it worked pretty well for the text in the credits.
Gau Font Over Drive was used for the ANIMATION SHOWCASE text.
Gen Jyuu Gothic LP was used for the majority of the Japanese text and its English letters were also used for the battle clip subtitles on Twitter.
Meiryo UI (default font) was used for the Preview videosā subtitles.
Noto Serif JP (default Google font) was used for the serif Japanese text in the credits.
ABOUT NOXPLAYER ANDROID EMULATOR
ETA: AS OF VERSION 1.1.18 (04/23/21), EMULATORS NO LONGER WORK WITH HELIOSR (AS WELL AS OTHER CACALIA STUDIO GAMES). THE BELOW INFORMATION IS OUTDATED.
If, for whatever reason youāre interested in using NoxPlayer, you should take caution when installing it onto your machine. I donāt advocate for or recommend installing Nox. I had to resort to emulation so that I could record the footage and sounds directly from my computer using OBS. The reason why I used Nox specifically is because Cacalia Studio doesnāt like emulators, blocking most of them from running their games. I found further instructions on how to run the game in Nox from the Cacalia RPG Discord (via Twitter @HeliosR_en).
First, not all Nox versions are safe. It should only be installed from the official website, Bignox. More recent versions (I believe from 6.3.0.6 and up) may contain malware such as Segurazo and Chromium packaged with the installer which can be annoying to remove. The version of Nox I used was 6.3.0.0 (you can install older versions, then just donāt update it), which has Android 7 and doesnāt contain packaged malware (AFAIK).
Second, NoxPlayer may be āfreeā to use, but it comes with bloatware and profits off of its usersā data by collecting and sending it to many different servers. The below guide is what I used to debloat Nox and minimize communication to these servers. Scroll down the comments for additional domains to add to the hosts file.

ENDING NOTES (TL;DR)
Images of the first and last video for the HeliosR project. Weāve come full circle!
One very tired and average person decided to translate, script, cast, direct, and edit an ambitious project all by herself using only FREE tools, and ended up taking too long to finish it. But at least she finished it, right?
Translators = RESPECT
Voice actors = RESPECT
Video editors = RESPECT
Audio engineers = R E S P E C T (their work is especially behind-the-scenes)
Hell, I even like Asch now.
During my time working on this, there was one question I always had in mind: āWhat would the fans want?ā
I hope this follow-up has given you a bit of insight into the makings of the HeliosR project. Thank you for reading!

Evan Evagora did an AMA involving the Star Trek Shitposting Facebook Group - the questions and answers below were copy/pasted direct from the collated master post. Evan is a member of the group, who participates under an unknown pseudonym.
āāāāāāāāāāāāāāā
AMA Master Post!
Thanks so much to Evan Evagora for taking time out of his day for our AMA earlier. To make the questions and answers easier for ya'll to find, here they all are together below.
Q: How does my love of cats compare to Elnor?
A: Im actually more of a dog person, there was a scene that had Elnor and spot 2 unite briefly but unfortunately it didnāt leave the editing room
Q: How familiar was I with Star Trek before and did I have to do research?
A: I grew up with TNG, Iād have to say either worf, Guinan or Q are my favourite characters. And I was given episodes to watch that were to help with information before filming Picard
Q: How was I prepped to deal with the crazy fans?
A: I got told to join Star Trek shitposting š. Not but in all seriousness, it was Jonathan Frakes who gave me advice on entering the world of fandom from the other side and he said itās been nothing short of a pleasure
Q: So if Hugh had survived would they have made out?
A: what happens on the cube stays on the cube
Q: My favourite moment of s1
A: getting to slice that romulans head off
Q: How did I hear about Star Trek shitposting?
A: most of the crew is either a part of the group or knows about, one of the amazing hair and make up ladies got me into I think my first or second day
Q: If I had to be Tuvixed with someone excluding elnor?
A: mirror verse Elnor, nah worf to be honest
Q: What is something Iād like to do in season 2
A: Id like to see Elnor and spot 2 together
Q: How am I passing my time woth quarantine?
A: ama for the gronp! Nah Iāve just been reading, writing and also the contact Iām having with the fans too has really helped a lot
Q: If I had to quarantine with any of my costars who would it be and why
A: Iād go with hardy treadaway heās got the nicest place
Q: What am I hoping to see in Elnorās future
A: Inner peace, contentment and possibly shorter hair?
Q: Am I intimidated by working on a show with such a big fan base?
A: no I grew up with Star Trek, youāre really in a bubble of filming when youāre making the show, it all didnāt really hit home until the first trailer at San Diego
Q: Would I consider playing Elnor as non binary
A: Iāve seen a lot of debate and discussion about not only my character but others in the series, if there is something that connects you with a character on this show and it resonates with you, even if itās shown, not shown or hinted at Iām all for it. I am not for the constant belittlement, bullying and criticism of not only the characters on the show but also other fans. It really does break my heart reading comments where people arenāt welcoming of one another, because that is the whole reason why Trek has bought so many together and by spewing these disgusting cruel words out your not only showing the world you donāt understand the meaning behind the show, you also are destroying the thing that makes us all love it
Q: Is there Australia on romulas
A: yeah they have a down under Iām sure of it. No the accent can easily be explained with, Elnor left romulas at a young age, moved to a planet with different species and languages spoken so that influenced his accent
Q: Have I seen Elnor fan fiction and art?
A: yeah some of it has been really amazing! And some others have been...creative
Q: How excited am I to make home movies with my action figures?
A: my plan is to buy everyoneās, make them record audio and then film shit using the dolls and their voices
Q: Are you playing animal crossing?
A: Iāve preordered it because theyāve sold out here in aus, but in playing civ 6 to pass time and Mario party
Q: Did I get to try Romulan ale?
A: no I wish, Iām kind of hoping for a scene next year where Elnor gets drunk for the first time
Q: What character did I wish would appear in our show?
A: one word, one letter Q
Q: Whatās my background have I been acting long?
A: Picard was my third acting gig, and the first project to release, so I have got some experience acting and I have previous work but it has either just aired or is going to next year
Q: Please my friend choose a charity you would like us to donate to
A: food bank
Q: Favourite ninja turtle
A: itās always been Raph and always will be
Q: Do I know much about Elnors background
A: I know things that havenāt been mentioned yet, but also given his character is new and season 1 just finished, hopefully some of those things are explored
Q: How would o feel about the fan theory that Spock is my father
A: I mean, Iām not really sure, I can always shoot Ethan a message and ask him what he thinks too
Q: Which classic episode trope would I like to see?
A: mirror universe
Q: Can we look forward to more ninja representation?
A: is Elnor not enough? ā¹ļø
Q: Were there any particular characters I drew inspiration from, any elves?
A: thereās a particular group of people I think Elnor might have been inspired from. Can I just say how cool it would be if Elnor is just cosplaying as an elf because Picard left him a copy of Lotr when he was young
Q: Would I be open to exploring Elnors sexuality in s2 and what would it be?
A: I am totally open for that, and as for Elnors sexuality, Iām not sure heās only 17 heās just left his planet and gone off on an adventure where he openly knew the success may lead in his death or others he hasnāt had time to figure himself out so seeing his sexuality explored would be amazing
Q: What stories did you hear about working on precious trek series from the OG actors?
A; So we found out Michael Dorn used to muddle his lines up because he was normally the last close up of the day. They used to put bets on to see how many takes heād have to do. All I must add in very fun spirits nothing ever malicious or mean
Q: My long term career goals
A: id like to keep pursuing more roles Iām acting, Iām a big writer and have some projects Iām looking at getting created but right now Iād say Iām just here to learn and grow
Q: What do I write?
A: right now Iām working on three screenplays and two pilots most of the stuff Iāve written is just sitting on my hard drive just waiting to be used
Q: Ever fried an egg, buttered and vegemite'd some toast and eaten it like a sandwich?
A: what I just read, scared the crap out of me, I love vegemite but the most Iāll do is add cheese to it
Q: What is one of my favourite stories about s1
A: Jeri Ryan and I had a scene together in the borg cube (what a queen she made!) it was shooting at night and I think it was the final shot of the day, we couldnāt keep a straight face and just laughed through about fifteen takes
Q: Are you a big fan of fandom besides Trek?
A: Star Wars, lotr, the magician series Raymond e feist, a song of fire and ice series, avatar last air bender and legend of Korra (would love to play zuko) and of course Batman (fav Jason Todd as the hood)
Q: Could I see myself playing Elnor for six or seven years?
A: as long as thereās a good story that myself and fans will enjoy, but if it didnāt meet my expectations no. And also hopefully the writers and creators would want to
Q: My top TNG eps are in no particular order
I borg, all good things, tapestry, the measure of a man and all good things
Iāll also add I borg especially because itās just cool seeing where Hugh began and how he ended up
Q: How did I land the role of Elnor?
A: I was on a break from filming Fantasy Island (a movie based off the old tv show) and I was home for pilot season which is when they cast for shows, I had two weeks of daily auditions before I was due to fly back and start filming again, two days before I was meant to leave I got an audition for Picard, the script had a code name and Elnors name was Kbar on it, but I was told it was Star Trek. I went into the room and thought I didnāt do a very good job, then I flew to film and two days later I was told Iāve made a list of people being considered, after a few more auditions and a couple of phone calls from producers and everything I found myself on a plane to LA five weeks later
Q: Have I made friends among the cast?
A: no, we tried really hard to become friends, but unfortunately we ended up becoming a family instead. Everything we say in interviews about us getting along is all true and not fake. Iām the newest to acting out of everyone so I was kind of of shocked to find out that how close we all are isnāt necessarily how it will be when I shoot other projects, so I think we just got lucky or they casted really well
Q: Have the Picard people seen your memes?
A: yes Iāve shown them the memes from the page, Iāve shown everyone including Patrick we find most of them funny (some shocking)
Not shocking in a bad way
Unexpected I should say
Q: How do I feel about the ears?
A: I wore them so much they came up in my dreams, but they were the easiest thing to apply onto me
Q: Which non tng character would I like to see return?
A: I wouldnāt mind seeing the doctor
Q: The most relatable Star Trek character?
A: Look for me growing up it was Wesley, i just picked anyone who was the young one. And I grew up with my sisters and was always being told Iām either wrong, an idiot or just to shut up
Q: Did I have previous martial arts experience before the show?
A: I have a background in boxing which helps when it comes to movement, reflexes and just all around fitness for stunts. I didnāt have any sword fighting experience before we began training for the show however
Q: How do you think being raised by an order of women affected Elnor?
A: I think it gave him a healthy understanding of not only the strength and resilience of women but I think he understands not only gender equality but just equality in general and I think thatās directly to do with growing up in a sect of all female warrior nuns
Q: What is a type of meme you would like to see more of in the group?
A: I love all the memes in the group, I hardly like any of them now incase someone figures out who I am though ahahah
Q: Favorite recent memes?
A: See my comment below

Into the Object Hole:
Why is Nearly Every Object Show Flash-Animated?
(warning: a big, gigantic ramble generated by the mind of a comic artist)
Iām asking this question because I was bitten by the āObject Showā bug myself! Itās become a niche but easily replicated genre of its own within the animation community. Starting with the eponymous Battle For Dream Island (a show I think weāre all familiar with), weāve seen many creators follow suit in the seemingly simple formula of having a bunch of inanimate objects participate in a game show-esque competition.
This is not to claim that Object Shows are unoriginal or overdone at this point: on the contrary. With the advent of resources for learning writing, animation, et cetera, I feel thereās a massive amount of potential that this community has, until now, mostly neglected. Battle for BFDI is, from what I can tell, reveling in its own, unique premise in the way it wants to. Inanimate Insanityās second season has, as of late, recognized its potential to communicate a story about change and growth within individuals and the world around it. Unfortunately, I havenāt watched many shows, but I feel Iāve gotten my point across.
In another post, I asked about shows that didnāt use Flash, so iām going to be responding to those before I embark on my tangent.
@apcwoc said: Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā djshjksjhhdj most of the shows are probably done on flash because a lot of them were started when the og creators where much younger and flash is the easiest and most reliable to use when people start out animating Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
thatās a common thread iāve been finding!! one of the earliest object shows, Animation Island by legotd61, was created a year after BFDIāand at the time, legotd61 was 7 years old. granted the animation & visuals arenāt the most jaw-dropping thing in the world, but they were a kid so itās automatically charming. in like, a kid sense.
@demi-gray suggested Modern Objects as a non-asset-using show!
youtube
Unfortunately, it still relies on assets for arguably the most important visuals: the characters! They do use the capabilities of Flash more extensively than other shows (that I know of), which makes watching the characters do their thing a lot more fun and engaging. The unique style compared to other shows definitely helps out a lot as well!

PLEASE show me your show when you do it, because your animations are!!! really cute!!! also iād LOVE to see stuff that takes the path of Modern Objects: with asset bodies, yes, but everything else is done according to the needs of the visuals. Use your medium to the best of its ability!
@dottival said: Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā I once saw someone who Wanted to do frame-by-frame, but they never got their show off the ground. Mostly because they never really started??
you canāt just. tell me this. and not say who this person is (unless they want their identity under wraps, which iāll respect)!!!! Iād love to ask them about their thought process towards their show, unless they didnāt actually plan much. I want to do some... ReSearch....
Speaking of planning, the thing that enchants and haunts me most about object shows is how much is going on behind the scenes. This is for any animated show, really, because as a bitty comic artist, I had no clue where to begin. Iāve started to draft and worldbuild for my own show, but I canāt help but wonder how much of it is done for other object shows.
(this is a thumbnail for a setting on my show!)
The medium, by default, demands attention on the characters at the forefront. The premise generates interest, the aesthetics (arenāt necessary but) lead viewers in, and the subject(s) of the show is what keeps audiences engaged. No matter what the creator(s) choose as the subject, they must make sure itās polished to their best abilities, while ensuring other elements of their medium is properly balanced.
If youāre creating a character-driven narrative, for example, youāll want to focus on the development of your characters. And, since itās easiest to relate to concrete characters, thatās what novice content creators focus on developing as their contentās primary subject (and what professional content creators master).
However, the development of, say, a character is more often than not put into the hands of the viewers. How? Viewer participation: having the audience vote off who leaves a competition.
An interesting concept as, typically, animated shows require oodles of planning in order to convey the story it wants to the best of its ability. This makes the typical object show a challenge (forgive the word-play) to pull off properly, despite being deceptively simple enough of a feat on the surface. Character development can be volatile, as any character can be booted off (depending on how well you can predict a character getting eliminated).
Following this, the difficulty of creating a cohesive and well-written story through the Object Show format is very, very high. After all, you need to place time in your resources as wisely as possible, in order to avoid taking too much time on an end product you may not even like a little while later. The elimination of one character may upset a part or the entirety of the showās plotline, if a creator is not careful.
Inanimate Insanityās writing was able to excel at its greatest the moment viewer voting was dropped. One of the best shows in this genre (in my opinion), Modern Objects, isnāt even an object show: itās formatted like a sitcom, and focuses primarily on characters and comedy. The one object show I was able to find that was primarily frame-by-frame animation (thank you, @bfb-basard!), Race to the Mansion of Tomorrow, is 100% script-driven; meaning, no viewer participation. This is the same for a few other shows as well, though I am not aware of them at this point of time.
(a snapshot of my animation process: this is for an animation of my OCs Milt and Malt, put to the audio of Big Bill Hellās Cars.)
So why Flash? The answer is because itās just easier. Not in the sense that the animators of these shows are lazier, but because animating in Flash saves time. Unless youāre putting all your stops into your show, or the contestants will always be present / arenāt quite as important to the narrative, you absolutely cannot afford to waste time and energy on things that can get thrown away later. Either that, or you donāt know where a character or a plotline or what have you will build up to, so you want to make sure whatever you do make isnāt wasted.
(Granted, I always feel thereās always time for weird plots to be resolved until itās the very end, but retcons are also an option?)
You see this video? Itās a pretty simple animation of just a little softball walking around.
It took me 2 or 3 hours, give or take, to finish. Nearly every frame is unique, and I drew them all with my hands and my tablet, nothing else. All moving parts are either animated in 2ā²s or 1ā²sāthe latter of which being 1/24th of a second. There are 35 drawn frames overall, stretched out onto 127 individual frames that constitute the entirety of the animation.
In other words, this clip is 5 seconds long.
If you want to finish an object show within your lifetime, let alone within 5 years, then Flash will be your best friend. Itās good, revolutionary technology that will make your life easier. With Flash, you donāt have to draw things over and over and focus instead on the motion, not the artwork.
Not only that, but being able to finish in a timely manner will help smaller content creators as, since weāre small and have small audiences, not everyone has a long enough attention span to hang onto you for decades. Certain shows like BFB and Inanimate Insanity have the advantage of popularity, so they can take their time with both the show and life (but theyāre still rushed by their audience anyways so itās a double-edged sword).
If you want to tell a story, consider what medium you tell it through wisely. Animation isnāt the only way, but I know for a fact that, if I get there, my show will be frame-by-frame. Why? Because I consider the artwork and the motion in my story just as important as my characters, if not moreso. You might not.
You can make it 3-d animated, claymation, traditionally animated, digitally animated, Flash, frame-by-frame, what have you. You can write your show as a novel, a script, a screenplay, a radio play, what have you. You can illustrate it as a childrenās book, a comic, a graphic novel, or even an illustrated novel.
One of my favorite shows, up there with Modern Objects, is a comic by @swabsblooā called Escape From Abject Reality (which you can read on itās own blog at @efarwebcomicā! Please read it! PLEASE READ IT! PLEASE!!! PL). Swabsbloo takes the premise of object shows and simultaneously puts it on its head while playing it straight: a bunch of objects wake up in an oddly absent field, only to figure out theyāve been trapped in a game show-themed death trap controlled (...?) by a(n apparent) sociopath named Snake Oil. You should read it. You should read their comic.
Hell, does your object show even need to be an object show? You can create stories that are beyond inanimate objects, or stories beyond competitions. Again, Modern Objects isnāt a competition show. You can base your characters off of objects as well, without needing to make them explicitly an object. The show I mentioned earlier, Race to the Mansion of Tomorrow, takes this latter approach for the most part!
youtube
As a storyteller, what I obsess about the most is storytelling. I love seeing all forms of it, and the potential that this communityās genre has astounds and fascinates me. The way in which we view the story doesnāt have to be important, but I find the ones I enjoy the most are the ones that utilize its medium to the best of its ability. It doesnāt have to be the best, it just needs to try.
So what do you want to try?

three anons: what the hell was all that in S7
Picking out the three that are most to the point for this answer, but Iāve got another dozen or so that overlap. Not sure Iāll have time/energy to answer the rest individually, so hopefully this meta will be sufficient.Ā
I mean it could be that they had different execs back then who were better at their jobs and kept Shiro around. No one disliked black paladin Shiro, even the DotU fans were ok with it, and the writing in s1-2 was mostly very good. Changing all that was a bad idea. I would have left on the spot if Shiro died or was benched, like now, I'm only around for closure. Maybe they were different execs with this decision & the EPs leaped at the chance. Well, we know who's also gonna be in trouble if that's the case.
With your theory on how storyboards were reused and characters shuffled around for cost cutting, might this not also partly explain the Adam flashback scene and how it was staged? I mean, they were originally supposed to be roommates and the scene was meant to appear in season 2 but got cut. What if they just reused the storyboard (or even animation, if it was already mostly done) the way it was and then just changed the dialogue? This could explain the lack of intimacy in the staging, too. Ezor and Zethrids interactions were more openly intimate maybe not (just) because theyāre villains who die immediately after, but because the decision to make them an item came before storyboarding was done, so the staging is more suggestive. I mean, if you think Shiro was mostly pasted in in the first half of s7, that might make sense.
If cost was the issue and they already had the black paladin Shiro version written, and got the greenlight to change it to Keith then things don't add up. Because they changed it once more! Which could have been avoided if they stuck to the Shiro one. And it goes without saying it would be better written to follow canon instead of the mess we got, like, I cant imagine this NOT discussed. So if it wouldn't be cost effective to change it again for Keith and it would be badly written, why did it happen?
Behind the cut: the most likely chronology of revisions, the clues in S7 as to its original form, and what this means for S8 and the Black Paladin position.Ā
This is everything Iāve been able to figure out between interviews, podcasts, tweets, plus researching the industry and a few reality-checks with friends more familiar. As always, any mistakes are my own.Ā
version 0: "five teenagers"
This wouldāve been the first pitch after getting the green light, and probably only a loose synopsis, with just the pilot given a rough storyboard. A post-apocalyptic Earth conquered by the Galra, who are seeking Blue. The execs rejected JDS' mechanism for the discovery of Blue, in favor of simply having Keith āsenseā Blue. The execs also rejected the idea that Shiro would die only a few episodes in. This summary seems to be the basis of the "five teenagers" part of the teaser.
version A: "shiro kicks the bucket"
Timelines would've dictated moving onto an outline pretty quickly, detailed down to the episode level, including bits of dialogue, motifs, turning points or emotional beats. In this revision, Shiro dies/leaves at the end of S2 and does not return. This is the āoriginally we wanted him to kick the bucketā version, which the execs rejected.
version B: "shiro goes away for awhile"
If I'm interpreting the hints correctly, the "does Shiro die or not" question got tossed back and forth all the way into S1/S2 pre-production. Rather than rearrange everything, the easiest fix would've been to leave most of the story intact and write only a new ending where Shiro returns. The execs reject this rewrite, saying Shiro canāt be gone that long. This is the āwe tried to just have him gone for awhile, but the execs said he had to come back soonerā version.
version C: "enter the clone"
Again, easiest fix is to insert Shiro/Kuron, remove Keith, and reverse that just before Shiro's return in version B. This impacts only the middle seasons (S3-S6); the clone compromise satisfies the execs. Kuron's characterization makes a lot more sense if itās Keith, in visuals (ie Kuron leaning against the wall in Keith fashion), dialogue (fighting with Lance), and action (leaving without consulting the team). It's also why no one mentions Keith's absence. Because in the original version A, Keith was standing right there.
version D: "wtf is going on", aka Season 7
When JDS mentions having a full season written with Shiro as Black Paladin, it didn't make sense how they'd have a script and not use it. With @ptw30's visual detective work, I think I may've figured it out.
Technical notes: first scripts are all written for a season, then voices are recorded, and then the combined script+recording is used to storyboard. Production seasons are 26-episodes, independent of actual broadcast seasons; VA may be recording scenes across two 13-episode seasons completely out of order, since the recording schedule's going to be based on who's available, not chronology of the file numbers. The biggest staff changes are usually in April ('staffing season') when new shows get the greenlight and start sharking around to catch writers, designers, directors, etc.
In March of this year, S5 was released. At least some of the storyboarders were released in time for staffing season; in April, Hedrick moves to a new project. With S7/S8 being unchanged since version B, I suspect Hedrick delivered the scripts for S7 and S8 by winter of last year, at latest. Even that would be tight, since that's expecting animation to deliver 26 episodes in an 8-month timeframe. [edit: probably delivered much earlier, given the studio leaks show images we can recognize from S7/S8, so some amount of these seasons were in production by then.]
In June, S6 dropped, and a week later, Hamilton was announced as the new story editor via the Lets Voltron podcast. With the lead time required in production, there doesn't seem to be any reason to even need a story editor, at this point. All the pre-production work should be done.
In August, S7 dropped. Hedrick's editor credit is only for the first half of the season; Hamilton gets it for the second half. That means the last six episodes were written after Hedrick's departure. (May Chan's S2 script was reused in part, and she gains a belated co-writing script credit for that. Hedrick should've received the same; it's standard.)
Let's recap a few things we know (and a few we can intuit) about S7:
The season was already written with Shiro returning as Black Paladin, possibly also recorded and storyboarded.Ā
S6 reversed the S4-S5 trend, lending strength to exec arguments that Shiro is necessary in the story.
After S6 dropped, the EPs said the wolf's name was a spoiler. See this post from @pwt30; tl;dr is that perhaps the EPs intended the wolf to be Shiro's spirit.Ā
Despite Shiro's return, he's absent for the majority of the first half; when he is present, he barely speaks a half-dozen words, and none are plot-relevant. See @ptw30's post for more details.Ā
There's a glaring incontinuity when Allura says the paladin armor protected the team, yet Shiro is frozen with the other non-paladins despite wearing armor.Ā
Keith never offers for Shiro to pilot, nor mentions it, nor even seems to consider it an issue.
Not everything dovetails since I don't have the full picture, but here's my theory: S7 was originally outlined with Shiro's spirit in the wolf, rather than Black. I have no idea when/how JDS would've thought up the CA:WS parallels for his sole writing credit, but Shiro's "I died" and Lotor's psychotic breakdown are squeezed into S6E6, which was written by Josh Hamilton, Hedrick's later replacement. The only other Shiro-in-Black point is a few minutes at the end of S6's final episode. Shifting from Shiro-in-wolf to Shiro-in-Black really only affects one episode, with a bit of editing for another.
Anyway, S6 ends version C, and we segue to version B. For the first half of S7, the clone's body may have been in stasis while the team traveled through its various non-adventures. The episode we now know as S7E1 may have been the mid-point, with about six episodes of Shiro being unconcious. After watching the numbers drop from S3 to S6, the execs may've rejected another six episodes of where-is-Shiro and insisted he come back ASAP.
S7 only has two episodes that must be in order; the rest are pretty rearrangeable. All they had to do was insert Shiro into the background and record a few lines. (Several lines are pure voice-over, which also saves cost/time by not needing to animate moving mouth.) But the moved episode is only his memory/awakening, and the logical next episode would be Shiro's reconnection, and the rest of the season would roll from there. Without moving the entire second half of the season to the start, moving only his awakening episode would mean Shiro does nothing for 5-6 episodes and then abruptly reconnects. Ā
In a recent interview, JDS said at first the execs weren't enthused until JDS talked up the new mecha they'd give Shiro to captain. Honestly, there's no way JDS got to be EP without giving a really good pitch, but there may've been another element to his argument: nostalgia. The EPs seem certain everyone suffers from their same nostalgia dementia, which if you do, then you probably have been waiting for any glimpse of that og!Keith. If Shiro returns at the start of S7, then Keith's time in Black has been limited to a few disastrous episodes in S3, and a single big battle in S6. The beginning of S7 is the only time we'd ever see the Voltron84 formation working as a unified team, and returning Shiro too soon would defeat the whole purpose of showing how the team has grown in his absence.
The solution seems to have been to remove Shiro's reconnection completely, and keep Keith in Black. That would mean re-recording Shiro's lines from the midpoint onward, and editing in Keith over Shiro. The savings would be that only half the seaon would have to be reworked, not all. The loose end of the space wolf --- an artifact of version B --- was left in place. Ā
What I'm not sure of is whether the following are significant enough changes to warrant removing Hedrick's name and replacing it with Hamilton's. It could be, if supervising the revision process is enough to override the previous credits. I have no idea about that part of the industry, and it's the kind of edge case you're just not going to find a lot of blog posts about, so if you know, tell me. Otherwise, your guess is as good as mine.
Anyway, this would've meant Shiro was switched in for Allura, Allura was put back in a lion, and Keith was switched in for Shiro. This would explain why Shiro speaks as the leader of Voltron despite no longer being a paladin, and the uneasy sensations a lot of people got about the characterizations. It was most striking in the last three episodes: Shiro felt like Allura v2, while Keith felt like Shiro v2. And that further, the Altean-Earthian ship just 'lighting up' for Shiro --- and becoming that oversized white mecha --- may've meant as Allura's fourth (fifth?) deus ex machina.
I'd be willing to bet that mid-battle, Allura repeated her stunt from the end of S2, heading out to destroy Sendak's crystal by herself. She wouldn't need Sam to hack her brain, and then we'd also have a call back to when she got knocked down by the crystal-ball thing on Naxzela. If she was the one meant to go toe-to-toe with Sendak, that would explain the bizarre neutrality of Sendak's words --- he says nothing personal to Shiro, at all --- and the even more bizarre silence on Shiro's part. Allura's words wouldn't fit Shiro, so he's silent.
And lastly, it'd mean that the one leaping out of Black to cut down Sendak wouldn't have been Keith. It would've been Shiro.
Where would the story go from here?
If I look at the events of S7, the first half is terribly disjointed, really. If Shiro was supposed to wake at the midpoint, an episode (or two) is missing. One for him to reconnect with Black, and a second that would provide some minor conflict to settle him back into position. Those two episodes were likely replaced with the unexpected and frankly over-told two-parter of the Earth flashbacks.
Two problems with that, one technical, one structural.
First, the flashback two-parter has a lot of moving parts. Brand-new designs, characters, and backdrops. It's far too elaborate to be done in an ultra-compressed timeframe, not without several heart attacks and therapy bills on the part of the animation staff. (Plus, the US-based storyboarding team is already downsized, so fewer hands to do the work.)
Second, it doesn't make a lot of structural sense, especially against the big revelations in S6 of an existing Altean colony. Within the story, there's no reason to halt everything and travel across the universe to take however long to build a new castle, when the Altean colony question is far more pressing. Returning to earth also violates the structure, because it's really just a standard milieu: start on earth, head out to have adventures, and return home at the end.
But here, they're returning home and then possibly leaving again. That's just... a rather peculiar and imbalanced way to do it. It doesn't help that doing so means literally telling Romelle her people are just gonna have to rot, the paladins are certain they need the castle more. Why would you take one of the more compelling storylines you've come up with, only to background it again, and wreck the traditional bookending milieu structure at the same time? Especially if that means coming up with major set-pieces and brand-new designs in the space of several months, after a chunk of your core staff are already onto other things.
I think those two flashback episodes -- and the rewritten finale episodes --- may've been cribbed from S8. In other words, the second half of S7 was the original end of S8. That would mean repurposing already-created storyboards and animation artifacts, so there's a huge time savings there (not counting the need to re-record voices and edit the visuals to match the changed-around parts).Ā
[note: if thereās anywhere you want to frontload introductions for the spin-off, itād be in the final season, not the penultimate season. Here it feels like a big honking distraction, rather than an organic segue into the next iteration.]
That change necessitated that utterly bizarro mecha that appeared out of nowhere with the most ridiculously impeccable timing. There needed to be a reason to pull the team back out to space to deal with Haggar and/or the alt-Alteans and/or Lotor or whomever else it turns out to be.
So... where we go from here depends on when S8 gets released, because thatāll tell us how much they did (or did not) edit the episodes. Another clue will be whose name gets listed as head editor for an episode; if we see Hedrickās name reappear at the top, weāll know weāre dealing with episodes that are enough unrevised to qualify as being Hedrick-edited, that itās a version B episode.Ā
My expectation? Theyāll move Shiroās reconnection to the first part of S8, andĀ add an episode or edit pieces of another, to blend it into what wouldāve been the first half of S8 (probably with filler to mask the gap). Then add an episode to segue into the version B finale of S7, where weād end with the original VLD lineup. With the time needed for animation, thatād be the easiest (if potentially awkward) way to repurpose as much as possible of existing artifacts.Ā
If we donāt get S8 in the next 1-2 months, though, all bets are off, and thereās a much greater possibility that the entire final season is being redone from scratch. Iād expect Keith to stay in Black, in that case, but Iām always willing to be pleasantly surprised.Ā Ā

B&C Behind the Scenes: Retro Video Capture On a Budget
People who follow Bread and Circuses know that the blog is dedicated almost entirely to pop culture analysis. But people who are my friends also know that Iām a huge geek for computer hardware. So today, youāll get you a man who can do both. This is my first behind the scenes feature, where I talk about crazy learning experiences in being a small-time YouTuber. This piece will be very technical, so I donāt blame you for skipping it.

The next project for Bread and Circuses is a full documentary and retrospective on Final Fantasy IX (2000, PlayStation), maybe the most important game in my life and one of the best RPGs ever made. Due to the scope of the video, Iām replaying all the original Final Fantasy games for the original PlayStation to jog my memory and give context for the less researchy parts. I am doing this on original hardware and a tube TV, without resorting to emulation or the re-releases. And Iāll be recording the entire game.
The choice for original hardware came for a few reasons. For one, the newer ports of Final Fantasy games areā¦mixed, at best. IXās updated ports feature higher quality models and cutscenes, but the backgrounds are blurry, the new fonts and interface are hideous, and the overall āfeelā of the original game is somewhat lost. As inspiration for writing the script, I also want the nostalgic experience of how I first experienced the game.
With that being said, I had a major hurdle to overcome: how do I record 50+ hours of gameplay from a 1995 console?
Step 1: Capture Setup
Most game capture these days is done in two ways: via the device playing the game, or via a capture card. The first method is quite easy on PC: you just fire up Open Broadcaster Suite, use a quick setup guide and youāre good to go. This is what Iāve done for all my videos thus far.
For modern consoles, you can use an HDMI capture card like the Elgato HD60. The cards arenāt exactly cheap, but theyāre affordable enough for most streamers and letās players.
But thereās one problem: both the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 do not have HDMI output. The early model PS3s can play PS1 games and have native HDMI, but they are rare, expensive, and often break.
While you can buy HDMI adapters for the OG PlayStation, they are spotty in quality and present yet another challenge: such adapters often introduce noticeable input lag. Though FFIX is not a fast-paced game, the lag is still bothersome. They also donāt work with my tube TV, which is critical for my desired creative process.
That leaves me with two capture options: composite or S-Video. Composite video is the little yellow guy you used to plug into your tube TV. It looks decent on those, but when captured digitally, the blurriness and drab colors are immediately apparent. Itās for this reason that I purchased S-video cables; without going into boring technical detail, S-Video delivers far richer colors. Because the adapter includes both, I can output to my TV and computer at the same time with no additional equipment!
Speaking of adapters, the PS2 also has the option to output component video, arguably the best analog video available. While capture solutions exist for component video, my tube TV does not accept it. So to use component, I would need a system of complicated adapters and converters to both record on my computer and play on my TV at the same time. Itās too much hassle for not enough results.

So instead, I did some research and bought this little guy: the Hauppauge USB Live-2. There are many adapters like it, but Hauppauge has brand recognition in this area. This adapter also uses 4:2:2 chroma subsampling, meaning that it sacrifices very little in color depth compared to some cheaper models. It plugs into any USB port.
My tube TV only supports mono sound, which means it only needs one audio cable. I hooked up the left channel (white cable) to my TV, and the right channel (red cable) to my capture card. When outputting FFIX in mono mode, both devices receive the same sounds, and the music doesnāt suffer from missing stereo effects. Perfection.
Step 2: PS1 or PS2?
So as most people know, the PlayStation 2 is backwards compatible with original PlayStation games. The method by which this is done, however, differs based on the model.
Early PS2s have an actual PS1 processor on their motherboard. For the PS2 itās used for sound and input/output, but when playing a PS1 game this CPU is instead, providing nearly perfect PS1 support. Sony actually did the same thing with the first PS3, but soon realized it was very expensive and scrapped it.
For later models of the PS2 ā the slimlines ā Sony switched to software emulation to save costs and space. The software emulation works very well, but it is just that: emulation. It is very rare for emulators to be literally perfect replications of the original experience, and Sonyās for the PS2 ā called POPS ā is not 100% accurate. I also donāt have a slim, so thereās that.

But Iām getting ahead of myself. I first dug out my old PlayStation 1, purchased new in 1998. While the system itself still works shockingly well (despite some skipping during movies), I quickly ran into a problem: the PS1 outputs at 240p. For the uninitiated, video nomenclature like 240p refers to the number of lines in the image along with the scan type. So 240p means there are 240 lines of pixels in the image, and they are updated progressively, meaning all at once.
Older tube TVs can accept 240p input, but output it in interlaced form. This means that the TV quickly updates every other line of the image, rather than the entire image at once. It works pretty good for this type of TV, but on a modern monitor introduces some problemsā¦which Iāll get to in a bit.
Image from dummies.com. Fitting.
However, this was a problem for me because my new capture card did not accept 240p input. I tried countless times to get it to accept PS1 video, and it just didnāt work. However, I noticed that my PS2 did. Thatās because the PS2 outputs by default at 480i, an interlaced mode that my capture card accepted.
So I opted to use my āfatā PS2 instead, which is a SCPH-30001 model, purchased new in 2001. It includes the original PlayStation chip, and ā to my enormous surprise ā read my original Final Fantasy IX CDs perfectly. Because the PS2 accepts PS1 controllers and PS1 memory cards, it was an almost flawless version of the original PS1 experience. Awesome!
Step 3: Recording
With setup out of the way, I got to the final step of the project: actually recording digital video.
I use Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) for all my video and streaming projects. Itās free, powerful, and pretty fast. My capture device was immediately detected by OBS, but there was one immediate problem.

Remember the interlacing I mentioned earlier? When you display interlaced video on a progressive screen ā AKA any modern flat-panel monitor ā you get a horribly ugly effect where the video seems to be ripping itself apart. This is called combing, and it sucks. Thankfully, OBS supports native deinterlacing, so I was able to fix it right up.
That being said, letās break down the different parts of recording with OBS:
Resolution: the PS2 outputs in 720x480 pixels, but my videos are at 1920x1080. However, recording at 1080p requires more hardware power, so I get more definition at the expense of less overall quality. I chose instead to record at 720p, which is closer to the PS2ās native resolution and allows me to capture better colors with less blur.
Framerate: this is where things got interesting. I master all of my videos at 60 frames per second. Very, very few PS1/2 games (FFIX included) hit 60fps, because the hardware of the time just wasnāt capable of rendering graphics that fast. However, they do output at a 60 hertz refresh rate, meaning that the image updates 60 times per second even if the console doesnāt actually produce new frames that fast. So if you record at under 60fps, you get noticeable judder in your footage. That being said, 60fps was a requirement.
Encoding: I wanted to get the highest possible quality picture. My computer has a Ryzen 5 1600 processor ā a capable mid-range CPU ā and is excellent at software video encoding. I used the OBS x264 encoder running at medium quality. Any higher than medium and I started experiencing skipping footage as my CPU went to 100% utilization. I gotta admit, itās pretty cool hearing my computer fans kick into overdrive as the CPU is pushed to its limits.
Bitrate: Iām recording a lot of footage here, so while I needed high quality, I also have to keep storage limitations in mind. I did some experimenting and decided on a bitrate of 9000kbps, still above YouTube quality while also saving space. This also means that each hour of footage is about 4GB; given that FFIX is about 40 hours long, that means roughly 160GB of footage for the game. Not bad, considering.
Deinterlacing: OBS presents a slew of options for deinterlacing your footage, and the differences can be tough to spot. The only option that gave me zero trouble ā no juddering or excessive blur ā was Yasif 2x. I also increased the brightness and saturation to make up for some of the analog video deficiencies.
Iāve included sample footage below, along with pictures of my setup. If youāre an aspiring retro YouTuber or streamer, feel free to PM me with any questions. This stuff was kinda intimidating to figure out and Iām happy to help!
Until then, Iāll be in Gaia. Or Terra, once I hit Disc 3.

Cable Routing Detail

The TV inputs run through this old AV hub I dug up from my teenage bedroom. This lets me run the cables behind my desk to keep things a bit neater. I say a bit because you can still see the cables back there, but thatās showbiz, baby.

Gotham will premiere their fifth and final season in 2019. The show has been a journey for the creators and actors, as they humbly and thrillingly brought their fans along on the ride, through destiny and rebirth.
This year at the New York Comic Con, Dark Knight News was invited to interview cast members (Sean Pertwee, Camren Bicondova, Chris Chalk, Cory Michael Smith, and Robin Lord Taylor) and the executive producer of the Emmy-Award winning show, John Stephens.
Sean Pertwee/Alfred Pennyworth
Q: So this season, Alfred goes through some major emotional stuff?
A: Well yeah, less than prior seasons actually.
Q: Oh, yeah?
A: Yeah, because the things that we actually find out ourselves with young master Bruce and Alfred, itās actually sort of developed into the relationship that people always expected it to be. They were horrified at my original iteration when I was sort of brusk with him. The fans went āHey, thatās not Alfred!ā But now they understand, I was right.
Itās a sort of combination of the prior seasons where their relationship is the one we know and love, which is Alfred is there for him. We did a scene very similar to that the other day where he doesnāt baulk and says āIām here if you need me,ā and master Bruce is horrified. I think he rather misses it, I think heās a slight sadistic. So, there you go. Itās not as emotionally driven in that way, thereās much more coming together.
Q: Will we get to see Alfred kick some more (butt) in this season?
A: Well, I think itās out there. I get my ass handed to me on a plate, but I give a good account of myself. You see some, but not as much. I mean, Iāve been fairly physical. Iāve ended up in the hospital quite a few times as well. I might be visiting it again. Iām not quite sure.
See, thatās something Iāve really enjoyed. The fact that you never really get to see an Alfred be physical. And also, who taught him how to fight, and cook, and dance, and throw knives? Basically, what Iām trying to say is Alfred is Batman.
Q: The OG Batman?
A: Yes, the OG.
Q: Does Alfred/do you believe in true altruism? And do you think the city of Gotham, with so much evil in there, can it have altruism?
A: I think every city⦠I think the enduring legacy of Batman is exactly that. Everything is applicable to society, even now. Thatās why thereās a need for the Bat because he stands up for the little guy. He goes āEnough is enough.ā Ā So there is light and shade in everyone. Thatās the thing throughout out journey in the past five years. Everyone has been good and bad, has a capacity to love, the capacity to be evil, to do things wrong. Itās the path that you choose. Itās been interesting watching, just like any city, yeah. It just needs guidance⦠it needs a bat.
Q: How does it feel to know youāre going to be such a big part of the Batman lore. Even a hundred years from now, people are going to refer back to Gotham.
A: Very good point. I mean, I really do appreciate that. Itās really just dawning on me now. The thing is, enduring legacy of Batman is that heās been relevant to every generation for years, and every 10 years thereās been a relevant character. I used to watch Adam West, and everyone used to laugh at the time. When I was a kid, that was super cool!
You know, I think this what weāve realized now is that peopleās interest and the way they look at these characters has been peaked, and people now see that fallibility. You donāt just wake up with an evil hat on. Like how Penguin became Penguin. You know, he was pushed into a certain point. He was bullied into being that person. So, yeah, thatās the story weāre telling. So, what weāve discovered is that we are right. We are right in what weāve done.
Jeremy Irons is a remarkable actor and in the movies heās SAS (Special Air Service), and that was a conversation I had with John Stephens and Bruno Heller. Because I trained in the SAS, was conscripted as a marine, but I liked the idea of him being able to do anything with a Swiss army knife. Of course thatās why Batman is Batman, because he can do it. So yeah, our stamp is there now.
I think people will reference it. People will use it at as reference point now. Or question elements, like why did these people become who they are? You know, weāre very proud of that.
Q: Were there any of the elements of the character that you wish you could have explored more on the show? For example, his love life?
A: Yup. Exactly. Thank you very much for noticing. I sort of met a girl I liked, she died about 3 pages later. That was really⦠I thought we were going to go down that path with the beautiful Leslie Thompkins and that didnāt work out, because⦠I donāt know. There was a bizarre moment, but it wasnāt really scripted, with Fish Moonie. There was this kind of threesome between the three of us, and even Jada went āWhat was that about? I think that could be interesting.ā Something to explore. He [Alfred] didnāt do well on that front. Tinder.
Camren Bicondova/Selina Kyle
Q: How are you feeling about rapping up your romance with Bruce? Are going to see an end to that maybe with just in the finale with the flash-forward or is this something that you want to leave hanging?
A: Iām not sure weāll see an end to it. Actually, it will leave off with a question. It will leave off with a kind of open-ended sentence. I like that. I would like to leave that topic with a cliff-hanger, only because their relationship, once the legacy moves forward, itās so unpredictable I wouldnāt want there to be a definitive end of them at this point, in this show because it wouldnāt be them, you know? I donāt think it would give them justice if that would happen.
Q: What can we expect from your character in this very last season?
A: A lot of trauma. A lot of self-work. A lot of really working through things or attempting to. To really go through, you know weāve really seen Selina fight these inner demons with herself in the past, but weāve never seen them. This season you get to actually see them, and itās been incredible going to work. It has been super draining after the days are done, but itās completely worth it because we get to see Selina in this raw state that weāve never seen her in before.
Q: How do you prepare before each episode of Gotham? Do you have acting methods that are different than from when you started?
A: Yeah. My method now is I donāt know what Iām doing and, I donāt look at my sides and I donāt look at the scenes until I am walking to rehearsal. Which actually, releases any pressure for me and just forces me to go with whatever comes naturally. So pretty much during my rehearsals are the cold reads and it just forces me to live in the moment. Do what she (Selina) would do first, while before I would prepare two-days in advance, and if I didnāt know my lines before I went to bed, I would get really bad anxiety, where just now itās just āI donāt know my lines, Iāll figure it out!ā
Q: Is there a lot of room to improvise organically?
A: I mean, not verbally, but given what Selina goes through after the way Bruce helps her after the first episode is a catalyst to the rest of what she goes through this season. Through that I was able to improvise a lot more physically with Selina, because Iāve been able to kind of foreshadow what she is to become.
Q: Did you have to receive any fight-moves training this season?
A: Training? No, I mean production has never really pressured me to do any of that anyways. Theyāve only told me like Danny just told me: āDonāt stop dancing. Just donāt stop dancing. That is a gift you are blessed with, just donāt stop dancing.ā Other than that, theyāve never really pressed me about my body image, or my physicality. Theyāve just always really trusted me in what I bring to the table talent-wise. Which has been a super-huge blessing because as a young woman, I face certain insecurities just like everybody and they havenāt said a word to me, you know? And theyāve just been like āListen, you do you. You do you, boo.ā
Q: Thatās fantastic! The fighting sequences though, they didnāt make you pose practice in any way for that?
A: We definitely have rehearsals for those. This season has been a lot different for me, give that, you know [gestures to her leg in a brace] my boot. I injured myself over hiatus and the doctor told me it was something way less major than what it actually was, so Iāve been in this boot all season. So Iāve been really able to focus on the emotionality of Selina, and allowed my stunt-double to actually do her job which has been really great! Because I get to see her kick-ass and I just kind of sit on the sidelines, so āYou go, girl!ā
Q: In the comics, Selina is bisexual. Is the something youād like to see more brought out or done in the show?
A: I never thought of them (Gotham) bringing it up. Iāve loved that they touched based on it in the comic books, and I would love to see them tackle that. We donāt see that this season. I think it would be great to see on television or film, I would love to see that incorporated into Selinaās character.
As far as if I would have loved to see it in this show? I would say based on what weāve seen Selina go through I feel like, Iām actually glad we focused on the different things we focused on before the second sexuality, because she has been so focused on surviving and so focused on herself that sheās not in a place to really question her sexuality, and really experience and experiment with certain things. I think even her being involved with Bruce is too much. So I think, even though I would love to see it, I think sheās dealing with too much. Iām glad that weāve touched base on the things weāve touched based on. Especially in season 5, we touch base on more of her mental health. Sheās suicidal at the beginning of the season. I think Iām proud we talk about that because I think thatās an important topic.
Chris Chalk/Lucius Fox
Whatās up? What do yāall want to talk about? Iāll tell you everything. All the secrets! Even in the promo, they pretty much told all the secrets. That was crazy!
Q: Whatās a typical day of filming like?
A: Itās very organized. Actually, Iāve been in a lot of TV shows in my day, and the fastest, of course, was Law and Order because theyāve been on the air forever. Gotham was pretty efficient. We still have a lot of creative say. We come in, you eat breakfast, you get your make-up on, do your hair and make-up. You go rehearse, you change things around if necessary and then we film. And then we laugh probably too much, we would probably have more efficient days if we stopped acting like children. But for some reason, me and Cory, and me and Ben (McKenzie), man! We canāt keep a straight face to save our life!
Even though Ben is professional, I bring the goofy out of him. So like, I hope they show you the bloopers. It might just be me and him. Nonsense! A day working with me, is going to be awesome. Efficient, but youāre going to laugh a lot.
Q: Is that what youāll miss the most, the camaraderie?
A: Yeah, the thing that will be most missed, easily, is the mandatory friendships that come with TV shows. You have to see the person, so you have to like them. Weāll see what everybody thinks when itās over, ha. But like, these people have been such an integral part this last four years.
With my father passing, with different traumas in each of our lives. Weāve been each otherās support system, and thatās just nobodyās job. Nobody has to do that, nobody brings their problems in, but people who genuinely care. Our cast genuinely cares about each other and so it is a family. And thatās not every show. Itās not every show. Iāve been on some shows where itās been like āI wanna go home,ā I hate these people, I love the work but hate the work. Itās nice to come to a work where itās like āLeave the computer in the bag.ā Instead of pretending to type so I wouldnāt have to talk to people.
Q: Ā Have you worked with anyone you despise?
A: I havenāt worked with anyone I despised. Iāve worked with people I donāt like at all, ha ha. Weāre not there in service of my own ego, Iām there in service of the words provided and trying to add everything I can do the process. I donāt take peopleās nonsense personally. Itās just when Iām home hanging out with my wife, I say āLet me tell you what this guy did today! UGH!ā
Q: As weāve seen over the course of the series, we see Lucius as the voice of reason. Does he get to cut loose at all during this season?
A: This season Lucius cuts loose for him⦠He unbuttons his top button. [ā¦]
But no, he [actually] doesnāt. But he gets to meet the love of his life!
Q: Is that part whatās most exciting for your character or is there another moment you think is more exciting for you?
A: Oh! You know what my favourite moment is? Oh, no, but I canāt tell you.
Q: Do it anyways!
A: We talk about it during the panel. Itās working with one of the actors we were working with and heās so super-talented, so you know itās a HE. Heās just so super talented and creative that we just had so much fun. He kind of re-created what we had written, which was nice because in season 5 people are still bringing their A-game to honor the script we would have been given.
Q: How are you doing to make this season very memorable for the fans?
A: Well Iām going to show up to work and do my job, but what the writers have done is taking everyoneās expectations, being āI donāt care about some of them because we have to create what we have to create,ā but honoring some of the favorites. Giving each appreciator of canon, a morsel to leave with. In this āNo Manās Landā arc, youāre going to see so many villains that we wonāt get to play with specifically because weāre only 12 episodes.
But itās so nice to go āAh! Thereās that person.ā āWait, is that person going to become that person?ā So when we go down in a sense, thereās some intrigue left. It wonāt be a bow on the top, itāll be āAww, man, thereās no more??ā I like that about the show.
Cory Michael Smith/Edward Nygma
Q: There is kind of a love Pentagon, between Riddler, Penguin, Jim, Sam, Lee, what is that dynamic like?
A: Aha! Iāve never thought of it quite like that. I loved that you called it that. It is an interesting season where we all crossed paths again, and at this point 5 years in, thereās a lot of history, thereās a lot of broken hearts, a lot of resentment. So there are wafts of it. Itās interesting that it does happen that all of us are all in the same space, at the same time, and it creates a tense environment. Ed is NOT looking for love this season. I think theyāre all a little over it. Theyāre pretty cynical people at this point.
Q: Is much going to be made about how you are resurrected after the season 4 finale, or are we just kind of skipping past a lot of that? New powers?
A: At the top of season 5, the conflict I am stuck with is that everyone has their territory, and are arriving in their own way. I am blacking out, waking up in strange places, not knowing what Iām doing, who Iāve been with. Iām causing problems for other people, and Iām hiding out in my library, just like losing my mind trying to figure out whatās going on, finding a pattern.
Is this Ed Nygma as an alter-ego to the Riddler doing this, doing something, or am I messing with myself? Am I self-destructive, is something else controlling me? I have no recollection of what happened, and so I donāt know whatās going on. Eventually, I go on a quest to figure it out, Ā traversing through the city and you know, my surroundings, I start crossing with other people. I spend a lot of time with Gordon and Penguin, A little with of Barbara, Stabby Babs. As I become aware of what is actually going on, itās pretty alarming. There are some events that really rock Gotham, and itās quite shocking when we realize whoās responsible, and whoās controlling things. It starts playing into this bigger conflict of man vs. state. Citizens vs. Government.
Q: Mental health is such an important topic in Gotham, do you think if Riddler got any help that he needed, he could have redemption.
A: I think if he lived in a more civil society, where you could potentially have a peaceful life, perhaps? I just donāt think Gotham is that place, you know? It breeds crazy and it requires crazy to survive. But I do think he has the capacity, I think one thing that is riveting about him is that he does have the capacity or had it, at least to lead a normal life, and to be a good guy/ To be on the right side of things. Iāve always tried to keep that relevant to the character.
Robin Lord Taylor/Penguin
Q: You recreated the Penguin pretty much. Everybody is always talking about the Joker, but youāve really brought the Penguin back to life. What do you think?
A: Thank you. Well, I share credit with our amazing showrunner, our executive runners: John Stephens, Danny Cannon, Bruno Heller⦠the vision started with them, and I just, I am the vessel. I just showed up.
You know, when I auditioned, I didnāt know really know what I was auditioning for. They wrote a big scene. So everything I brought to that scene just instinctively happened to match their vision where they wanted to take the Penguin in this story. Again, sometimes lightning strikes, and sometimes you get the job, and sometimes it leads to amazing experiences like Gotham. Itās just incredible.
Q: It seems that every season, the Penguin transitions into something else. What can we expect from this final season?
A: The story that I feel Gotham is telling is how this city, Gotham city, corrupts and destroys love. When we start the show in Oswald, there is this shred of humanity. Heās still trying, he is Fish Moonieās umbrella boy. Heās failing, heās figuring it out. Thereās something, I donāt know if identifiable is the word? Something sympathetic there. Like we know what heās trying for and why heās making these decisions.
By the end, I think that humanity, that gentleness, that if deep down underneath if everything had gone right for him, he would have been a good person I believe. But by the end of this story, they were telling me āI want all of that humanity squashed out, he is a monster. He is a monster, he is a super-villain.ā Gotham city has taken this person and the people who love him, and theyāve beaten out every shred of humanity. So in the end, we see the super-villain we all grew up knowing. You see someone who could really challenge The Batman, and thatās where weāre going to be at the very end.
Q: Following on from that, throughout the season the Penguin had a specific person or group of people that heās considered a targeting for revenge. After he got the revenge on the death of his mother, whoās going to be the target for the final season? Where is he going to go?
A: Itās actually really great, I think when that happened at the end of season four when he avenged his motherās death, I feel that released him. Like that was really the last piece of vengeance that had not been spoken for, that last bit of revenge he hadnāt gotten yet. And then he got it! And in season 5, heās taken over City Hall, heās absolutely the most powerful heās ever been, and he wants to rebuild the city, especially the crime syndicate in his image. In his design. Heās there to remake Gotham in his image, and so yeah, I think there will be revenge. I donāt know where heās going exactly, I havenāt read the final episode yet, so I donāt know. But the way these alliances are changing so fast, weāll have to see if Gordon is the friend he always thought he was. If Riddler was the ally he thought he could be⦠we have yet to see. So revenge could be coming for any one of them. I donāt know who it is.
Q: Is there any chance of a spin-off for you, after Gotham?
A: I mean, I havenāt heard anything. You know, if there is a talk about it, they should really let me know because when we wrap the final scene, Iām walking upstairs and shaving my head. Iām going back to blond! They better get what they need to get because this [gestures to his Penguin-like hair] is going away immediately. I tell people itās an amazing time for television and entertainment in general because look at it! The fans, Comic Con, is such as phenomenon. The fans, through social media have a voice. They can choose to keep characters coming. You know, if there is a desire for it, this has been the most gratifying character Iāve ever played in my life, and I owe everything to this character and this job, so if they wanted me or needed me, or if the fans were into it. I would be there in a heartbeat.
Q: Speaking of fans, how do you think theyāll react to the finale?
A: I mean, I think theyāre going to stoked! Absolutely thrilled! Because Iām thrilled because I get to show the traditional Penguin from the comics. And really having seen the designs, and taking in visually the character, I think it is one of the most closest, film version of the classic comic book Penguin thatās reached media. Theyāre all classic in their own way but this I feel is just so close to the original source material, that Iām so excited to play it. You know, it just gives that little bit of legitimacy, like being the actual older Penguin thatās overweight. Who, you know, is a monster. You know who, all of this stuff thatās happened to him, has lead up to that, and I think everyone is going to be really thrilled. Iām thrilled!
Thank you guys, bless you. Thank you guys for supporting our show, for writing about our show and reporting on it! It means so much to all of us! Thank you. Cheers!
John Stephens/Executive Producer
Q: So what and how much of you goes into these seasons, particularly season 5?
A: What goes into it? My son was looking at an old picture of me from season 1, and he said: āDad, you had great hair then.ā And I said āUhā¦yeah.ā It was a real before and after shot.
You know, a lot of people and ideas go into it. Ideas and people who devoted years of their work and lives into it. Itās not all mine, but it is a lot of work. Certainly feels that way. And I think also at the same time, people who become deeply invested are all the actors you see, in their characters and in their world. When I talk to them about what theyāre doing, itās always clear that theyāve been thinking about it a lot. Theyāve been thinking about who their character is, what they going to to be doing.
Q: The theme of identity is just so important in GOTHAM. What inspired to make such a focus on it?
A: To me, it all springs from the books themselves. I mean, I think the idea of identity and duality is so integral to the Batman myth. It goes with Bruce being both Batman and Bruce Wayne to the point where you are saying is he Batman pretending to be Bruce Wayne or Bruce Wayne pretending to be Batman? Whether itās Two-Face? The issue with the Jekyll/Hyde duality I feel is something we try to hold true to the centre of the show. The idea that you can actually create the person who you are going to become, and I guess the decision to tell the growing up story of Bruce Wayne, rather than skipping over than like how it has traditionally been done. If you see someone actually make the decisions of who theyāre going to be when they grow up, he is making the decision from being a kid to being a superhero.
Q: Is there any chance we see baby Batgirl in this season?
A: No comment, ha ha.
Q: What is all that talk of not being able to officially name the Joker, where does that come from?
A: You know, I think a lot of it is frankly continuity. Because of the fact that Batman has to be present at the creation of Joker, and Batman doesnāt appear in our the show until the very, very, very end. Everybody called the Joker before that, or even for us to say heās going to be the Joker I think would disrupt that continuity in a way, I also feel like we could say there are certain things like one day they want to do in the movies, which I want to protect. But I also believe in a case where there is a mystery around who that character is. What his real name is. You know, and I think saying that his name is, or knowing his as well as we might know him as well before his generation maybe is not something I want to do.
Q: This season is shortened. The shortest one so far. Did you struggle with that or was it relatively easy to wrap everything up in less time?
A: Definitely struggled with it. You know, thereās that old saying to a friend that goes something like āApologies for the long letter, I didnāt have the time to write a short letter.ā And I think thatās actually really true. To actually take a lot of material and condense it down is more difficult than just kind of telling the whole thing without a lot of room to breathe.
So it was really hard to get in everything we wanted to get in those last episodes. It was really stepping back for all the characters, and knowing which ones we wanted to hit and saying āthese are what we absolutely need,ā and building a story around that. But that took some time.
Q: And did you wrap everything up, or is there a lot left up to the imagination?
A: Weāre leaving it to the imagination.
Q: How was it like working with two youths on the set, for something that was dark, and still is dark?
A: It was great. Sometimes you worry about having them, you know, stabbing or killing somebody⦠but theyāre naturals at it!
Q: Is there anything you wished you did that you hadnāt?
A: Thatās a really good question, but no. I believe we left no stones un-turned.

Everything Iām Going to Watch in March: To the Beat of The TV Drum
Good news everyone, Russian Doll has met my requirement for truly great show of the year so we can all give up watching now and go home.
That's how this works, right? We can all be done now? No?
I hope so because I have too much anxiety to watch Pen15, and The Umbrella Academy was not the best television show (however it was the best music video I've ever seen). I will say though after checking out The ABC Murders, that I am VERY excited for the character work Rupert Grint will be producing once his jowls form in earnest, could be as soon as ten to fifteen years.Ā
March is going to be a real doozy, so gather your rope and pickaxes and prepare to dig yourself out of this avalanche of television premieres:
Sunday, March 10th-
American Gods (8pm on Starz)
I loved season 1 of American Gods, so much so that I lovingly recapped it (you can read them all here). However, much has changed since that first outing two years ago. OG showrunner's Bryan Fuller and Michael Green parted ways with the production, taking with them not just their weirdo creative vision, but Gillian Anderson and Kristen Chenoweth. The reins were then handed over to Jesse Alexander and, the man himself, Neil Gaiman, but the project continued to be plagued with rumors of behind-the-scenes money drama and lackluster scripts. Will this already challenging adaptation be able to survive the loss of its original visionaries? Or will something new be able to rise from the pyre of fire (d showrunners)?

The Case Against Adnan Syed (9pm on HBO)
The first season of the podcast Serial was a cultural zeitgeist, and if you didn't listen to it then I guess you just aren't very cool. Sorry that you have to learn that here. This docu-miniseries essentially covers the same ground as the podcast, investigating the murder of high schooler Hae Min Lee and subsequent arrest of her boyfriend Adnan Syed. But four years have passed since the podcast, years containing all sorts of exciting new content, like appeals! Also you actually get to see what everyone looks like when they talk!! Worth it!!
Friday, March 15th -
Love, Death & Robots (Netflix)
This is a sci-fi animation anthology from Tim Miller and David Fincher. Here is a link to the trailer. I guarantee you will know within the first 15 seconds if this is for you.
Queer Eye (Netflix)
QUEER EYE SEASON 3!!!! The Fab Five are now in Kansas City, saving wardrobes and souls. I need this in a visceral way. My eyesĀ thirst for Antoni in a Strokes T.

Shrill (Hulu)
The fabulous comedy lady Aidy Bryant plays the fabulous writer lady Lindy West in a six episode series based on West's memoir. If you like feminism, the fat acceptance movement, or fun in general, you will probably like this.
Wednesday, March 27th-
What We Do in the Shadows (FX - what time tho FX??Ā 10pm)
2014's What We Do in the Shadows is one of the funniest movies maybe ever, and it is on Amazon Prime until March 2nd so you have 24 hours to watch it. Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi wrote, direct and star in it. This is very important viewing so feel free to leave and come back. Maybe by the time you have watched it FX will have assigned a premiere time (UPDATE: apparently it will be at 10pm) to their television iteration. Shows based on movies can be dicey, but Jemaine and Taika are still involved, and FX is no slouch when it comes to high concept comedies. Also idk if you know, but when you are a vampire you become veeerry sexy.
Thursday, March 28th-

Abby's (9:30pm on NBC)
Yes, this is a multi-cam network comedy. Yes, it's still me, recommending this show is not a coded cry for help. The reason Abby's is here is because it's the newest show from Mike Schur's Fremulon, the production company behind The Good Place, Parks and Rec and Brooklyn 99 aka the GOOD GOOD shows. Abby's takes places at a bar where everyone knows your name, and the name of the bar is Abby's, also the bar is outside in Natalie Morale's backyard! That's right this is the first (??) outdoor multi-cam stage! Is that conceit going to add anything to this? Would it be more worthwhile to just go to Brew Haha? We'll find out!
Sunday, March 31st-
Barry (10pm on HBO)
Season one of HBO's hitman comedy made it onto my 2018 best of list (the highest honor of honors tbh). The first season's finale left me a little lukewarm, but the black humor and industry gags in the rest of the run were right on the money. Also Henry Winkler is really like....the most in this.
Veep (10:30pm on HBO)
Right after the Barry premiere is the final season of VEEP! Put on hold during JLD's battle with breast cancer, this series is finally back for its last season. The world of politics is very different than when this brilliant satire premiered in 2012 (lol if only we knew), and the prospect of a Selina Meyer presidency feels less like a threat and more like a welcome alternative! I truly love this show and I will miss it. If you were wondering what Iām like in my professional life, look no further than my spirit Amy.Ā
Call the Midwife (8pm on PBS)
You know already if you want to watch this or not, so consider this an ALERT.
Keeping Up With the Kardashians (8pm on E!)
Likewise, this is an alert.
Okay yes this looks like a lot of television, but there are a lot of SURE FIRE winners in here! And comedies! Lots of laughs for you! World is ending, have some nice laugh time yay!

(if you are excited about the prequel or you're an AA, then this post is not for you. Do not read. This especially means you, AA's.)
So...
youtube
Sigh, where do I even begin?
I have to admit that I have been extremely sus since hearing about the supposed plot leaks, then the casting (though I do love Meg Donnelly, watched her all 5 seasons on American Wife, she just does not fit the Mary bill for me, sorry), and just the overall reactions from every corner of the fandom. But this...this definitely took the half-underbaked and half-burnt cake.
Am I happy to see Dean again? Absolutely! I'm also curious to know when his time line allegedly takes place (many speculate it's in between 15x19 and 15x20), and why he has the drive to figure out the "truth" behind his parents' getting together and what that entails. For a second even, not going to lie, I had momentary hope when seeing him and then the Samulet hanging from the rear view mirror that maybe if it does take place after 15x19, then maybe he and Sam (though obviously Sam is MIA) are trying to figure out a way to get to the Empty to get Cas or maybe Dean is trying to locate Jack (I doubt it's Chuck) or The Empty or even Sam himself with the Samulet. (Yes, I am aware not everything is about Destiel or even Castiel, especially in a J/M prequel, but I was trying to connect the dots in my mind story wise as to why Dean is by himself on this "journey" for the "truth" about his parents despite knowing the real bts reason) And I thought for another hot second that maybe I was on the right track when we saw the split second scene of Cas' entry into the barn from 4x01. Why else choose that particular shot to put into the trailer when this prequel only has one episode in the can, right? Especially when they could have just as easily used other shots from the OG series? (I refuse to call it the mothership btw, that just sounds weird to me)
But then I watched the rest of it and...yeah.
The shots of Dean seem to me to be the darkest and grittiest, which makes sense based on the look of the OG show, Jensen mentioning they purposely used a different tint/look in this series to discern the two stories/shows, and the need to visually distinguish the timelines of Dean and then John and Mary.
The voiceover...gotta be honest, it's Dean's voice (obviously) but doesn't sound like Dean.
The first monster John and Mary face off against -- is this the famed Australian wendigo from the supposed script leak? To me, it looks like a guy in a badly burnt rubber Godzilla suit. That whole sequence has me feeling Indiana Jones vibes when it came to J/M.
The MOL book, while it's got the insignia, it just feels wrong. Maybe it's because we all know that John never knew about the MOL until 14x13. And we also know that if this prequel is going to stick to canon, that when it comes time for it to end, the only way they can connect back to the OG series is to have J/M effectively mindwiped in some way, due to a spell, the MOL, a Cupid, or Chuck/Jack/Heaven. But to me, while this is minute and maybe a silly detail to pinpoint, it feels like even the props used are different. The only thing that feels connected is Baby which is obviously with Dean.
I will admit that during the John returning home montage, some of the scenes gave me that old nostalgic SPN feel (especially the 'Welcome to Lawrence' sign). Even John's interaction with his mom. But that quickly goes away when Mary is first introduced.
While SPN has its comedic moments for sure, it needed time to grow into that in order to put that right out there as promo for an episode. Tbf, the 1st season of the OG series was billed as a horror show. We did see some laughable moments happen between Sam and Dean, even in the pilot, but ultimately it needed time before the show started its shift and we got comedy heavily promoted. For example, you didn't see a season 2 episode promoted the same way as a season 10 episode. But here, the comedy (which to be quite honest is extremely laughable and I don't mean that in the way they were hoping) is not only brought to the forefront (taking the focus off of the monster imho which again, if this connects to the "mothership" that should be the focus) but it's done in such a ridiculous way. The timing of these two actors was awful and the moment went on way too long for a trailer (which means it most likely will be worse when watching the whole thing). Maybe it will play out better in the episode but I tend to doubt it. This whole moment was meant to not only introduce J/M's dynamic and show John's inexperience and naivete to the world of monsters, but also to showcase Mary and essentially highlight her as a badass. Why else the music and the slowdown of the kick and focusing on her action?
It just felt off kilter tbh and it because it felt so off, it was hard to stay immersed in the rest of the trailer. I only saw Taylor from American Housewife has gotten some martial arts training, that's it.
Then she starts explaining they were just fighting a demon and John follows her, asking who she is. "You don't want any part of this life." Definitely something Mary would say but the way Meg delivers it, it's like...I don't know, it just really does not have the whole Mary/SPN vibe you know?
And sure enough, the rest of the trailer is spent introducing this new story (which is fine) but starts to feel like I'm watching a new Legacies or Originals series trailer.
And going back to the barn scene mentioned above -- why is it in there? Why after John asks Mary if she knew Henry Winchester? What was the point? (that's why I'm thinking it must be somehow story related, maybe to indicate Heaven "putting" the two together, but they literally could have used any other shot from the OG series to do this)
Mary is looking for Samuel, cue the eye roll. "Dad was hunting demons and now he's missing." Where have I heard that one before? It's one thing to call back to the pilot in a cool, creative way but this is just not even subtle. Plus, what do we see Mary in? A leather jacket. I'm assuming somehow this show will have that become John's at some point to connect back to the first show? Sigh. We all knew Dean was Mary's mirror but this is just so on the nose, it feels almost tacky and disrespectful to the OG show.
The only characters I felt interested to learn more about (and that's putting it kindly) was Carlos and Latika, especially Carlos. Now his intro scene in the trailer, that was interesting. If I had to pick a favorite part of this whole thing, that was it.
Then we see the rest of it which again just seems like more ripoff Indiana Jones vibes in a terrible mashup with the original SPN. Or like they pulled SPN characters into a parody of the IJ films.
The next monster -- maybe this is the Australian wendigo? Holy Toledo.
Then John tells Mary "When I was a kid, I always thought there was a monster under my bed. My dad always told me 'Don't worry, son. I know how to trap it.'" Again, where have I heard this before?
Btw nice casting of John's mom. Wasn't that Natasha from Dawson's Creek the same season Jensen was in? Interesting.
And here we go again with the Legacies/Originals vibes. If this wasn't proof that this prequel is really a reboot playing to the current CW teen audience (hence the vibes), I don't know what will.
Okay, there's the Australian wendigo, has to be. Or else it's one of the guys in an Underworld Lycan suit that also went through an unfortunate fiery incident.
And now, we are even starting to get slightly Walking Dead: World Beyond vibes (the promo of that show I mean). Once again, it's obvious the demographic they are targeting here.
"Saving people, hunting things, Mom, this is what I was born to do." Not only are they using that line, but now John's mom knows about it, too?
Once again going back to the tint/look, I now get even more why they kept the bluish tint for Dean's scenes. They're really looking to connect this to the OG show in some way still even though it's becoming more and more evident that this will be really tough for them to pull off.
And then the kicker:

When seeing this (after seeing this trailer), how am I supposed to take this seriously? That is literally a CW teen show title screen (and once again, I get it, the CW is doing the marketing/promotion). Look at it. Yes, okay, the swampy area is meant to indicate their location, I get it, but that title itself is fully CW teen. I mean, even right down to their promo pics:

I also get that this is CW marketing, again for the demographic they're really pushing for, but I gotta say, after seeing this trailer, it just really does not feel like it's something I'd personally be interested in watching. I'm an OG fan, just like I was of TVD, but this feels like it's going down the Charmed reboot path, the Legacies path, and while I'm not hating on those shows at all (I loved The Originals myself), they were intended for a very specific demographic/audience. Some OG fans did move over to those new shows (like myself) but that's a tough stretch for any OG fan of a 15-year running show. That transitioned to the new iteration of the network it had been on. That literally was the first of its kind in a way. And became a legacy show. I mean, what if Grey's Anatomy wrapped up this year, and two years down the line a new show started telling Meredith Grey's parents' love story, when they met in a hospital? Maybe that's not a great example but you get my point.
Dean is literally going to have to be the sun that all of these other things are going to be orbiting around. Which is setting these characters and this story up to fail. Big time. I'm not saying the show will not succeed in its run (meaning ratings wise) but if you think it won't go story wise the way Riverdale and Legacies did, think again.
I am so happy to see Dean again but at what cost? It hurts to feel this way about this project because I am an OG fan, I am a Jensen fan, I do love Meg (Idk anything about the other cast members tbh), and of course a fan of Robbie's, and I want all to do well and succeed in this venture, but this is just terrible. Perhaps another route taken story wise would have been the best way to go? A venture into another character's story? Maybe Bobby when he was married, then met Rufus, etc.? (they could have brought in a younger Ellen, too) Maybe Rowena and her centuries as a witch? Maybe even Henry Winchester's own story with the MOL? (expanded upon from what we saw in the OG show) Or even Samuel and Deana's own story? The Campbells are a line of hunters, right? They could have gone that way. Or doing what the TWD universe did (though tbf FTWD has just become awful these days) and creating two whole new story lines within the universe but then having it come back and all connect in the end. This way we don't lose our OG story line and characters, but the audience can become invested in new characters and new story lines (in addition to the OG) but that remain within the universe. Then it can connect to this 'one more case' series Jensen has talked about in some way. I don't know but it just feels like they could have gone any other way for their first venture out of the gate.
I thought maybe this was the condition W*B laid down for the Ackles with CM or CW, that if there was going to be a new SPN project, it had to have Dean/Jensen in some way (to help retain the original audience & to link back to the legacy show) & it would have to be entirely new to draw in newer and younger audiences, that would guarantee ratings, before the door could be fully opened to something down the line for Dean and Sam to come back and/or to tell other SPN stories. The CW tried and failed to launch two spin-off series in this universe and W*B/CW was determined that if they tried again, this time it was going to succeed, so they were going to ensure certain things occurred in this proposed spin-off aka prequel. I'm not in the industry so I have no idea how that all works but the more I've seen in interviews about this show, the more questions I have.
Look, regardless of my personal opinion on the matter, I do wish success for the cast, Jensen, and Robbie regardless. I'm not hating on any of them or even the show itself. Maybe by the time this thing premieres, I might feel differently and give this series a shot (for Jensen, Robbie, and the cast if nothing else), but as of right now:
I have to be honest and I never thought I'd say this because I am very protective of Yellowstone and 1883 by extension (you can't tell me that people and other networks haven't tuned into the success of that series/franchise and taking notes, just saying) and for obvious reasons but this looks more interesting to me to check out:

It's true, I love Katherine McNamara all by herself and I love the time line this is set in (as well as the cast, I don't know anything about the rest of them but I love the setup and dynamics in play already) but I have to say this looks very interesting. I have not seen one episode of Walker nor am I interested to honestly, but this one, I may just check out when it premieres. This looks promising to me.
I have no idea how it connects to the Walker universe set up by the original show (meaning Jarpad's version) but as a new possible viewer, this setup feels as if it's enough on its own.
