Just binge watched sherlock for the first time and something and came across your blog. In your opinion do you think Sherlock has professional combat training, maybe trained as a professional but decided to opt out of doing it? Or did he learn from experience? Him holding his own against Mary's former partner must say something.
What an excellent question!
I think there are two plausible answers here... One is that Sherlock has a history working for whatever government agency Mycroft is supposed to represent, and got his training that way. Now, Sherlock implies on a few occasions that he refuses to work for Mycroft (like in ASIP and TGG), and sometimes they clearly work at cross purposes (like in HLV). But Mycroft does offer him work in HLV (which Sherlock is forced to accept by the end of the episode), and he probably wouldn't be able to do that if Sherlock didn't have some pre-existing relationship with whatever intelligence agency, along with appropriate training.
The other likely possibility is suggested by the original canon. In Doyle's stories, Holmes tells us that he has studied a martial art called Baritsu -- probably a reference to Bartitsu, a wacky but real fighting method drawing together jujitsu, boxing, and cane fighting, among others. If our Sherlock was engaged in something similar, he might be basically self-taught, or perhaps working with private trainers or sparring partners.
Personally, I think the first option is a bit more likely, but the second is more fun. ;)
Anyone else have different headcanons for where Sherlock got his training?

Re: Dracula
I keep seeing posts here observing that Bram Stoker's original readers would not have been as versed in vampire lore as we moderns are -- vampires would have been a new concept to them, right?
I just want to say, no, not really.
In addition to Carmilla and Polidori's Vampyre, may I introduce into evidence the hugely popular but now largely forgotten Varney the Vampire?
Varney was serialized between 1845-47 as a "penny dreadful" and was basically the Twilight of its day. Even people who didn't read it would have heard about it.
Point being: when Victorian readers read about two pinprick holes in Lucy's throat, they would have known EXACTLY what that meant.

I'm very sad that my dash doesn't have one single post of Sherlock saying "am I the current king of England?"
I don't have time to make or hunt for gifs! Someone needs to get on this, please.

My #1 post of 2022
lmao we're in the new yorker for being weird has-beens
Tumblr is something like an Atlantis of social networks. Once prominent, innovative, and shining, on equal footing with any other social-media company, it sank under the waves as it underwent several ownership transfers in the twenty-tens. But it might be rising once more. Tumblr’s very status as a relic of the Internet—easily forgotten, unobtrusively designed, more or less unchanged from a decade ago—is making it appealing to prodigal users as well as new ones.
...
The Tumblr users I spoke to, both new and returning, cited a few unfashionable aspects that keep them using the platform. Tumblr’s main feed doesn’t shuffle posts algorithmically based on what it determines might appeal to a user... Posts appearing in the feed are undated, and many accounts are pseudonymous, creating a respite from the frenetic exposure of other social media. Users spoke of the platform feeling disconnected from the “real world”—no President would ever try to shape world events with a Tumblr post.
...
What makes Tumblr obsolete, for the moment, are the same things that lend it an enduring appeal. The fact that it maintains a following should remind us that we use social-media services by choice; no platform or feature is an inevitability.

Tumblr media
~~(^Pinterest)
Right now, it was just a hobby. A little blog you started before college that then turned into a podcast and full-blown career. At least, that’s what it was looking like.
You started writing about the Formula 1 feeder series’ years ago because you wanted to give a platform to the smaller categories, and it blew up. It also blew your mind that these people who were around your age were already getting their feet in the door to the pinnacle of motorsport. You also had a knack for writing, so reporting on the drivers’ and the series’ themselves proved to be easy for you.
Soon enough, you started getting invited on behalf of different teams to interview their drivers. Mainly Prema, ART, Van Amersfoort, and MP Motorsport, but they were the biggest teams in each category, so it made sense.
The first time you went to the track was with Van Amersfoort in 2021. There was a race at your favorite track of Red Bull Ring, which you had mentioned on the blog at one point, so they invited you. You had heard of a new driver joining one of the teams, but since it was not Van Amersfoort, you did not plan to do a deep dive until after the race weekend.
You were running through the garages, looking for your iPad, so you could interview Oliver Bearman, the championship leader. Plus, you were already a guest in their garage. Might as well capitalize on it.
You finally found it, so you pulled out your microphone from your backpack as you walked down the pitlane. Most of the drivers were getting the track limits rundown from the stewards, so you knew Ollie would be free after the meeting.
Almost as if it were planned, you ran into someone while you were distracted. Looking up from where you dropped the microphone and a paper with the questions you had for Ollie, you’re met with a brown-eyed, curly-haired boy, and you're a goner.
You couldn’t help but stutter out an apology, but funny enough, he was doing the same. When you both finally stopped stuttering out apologies, he said, “My name’s Kimi.”
You told him your name, and the rest was history.
There was an unspoken rule that from that moment onward, mainly because you two became official not long after. You were only a guest of Prema. It was just a joke that Kimi made up, saying he would crash if you wore any other team’s merch on a race weekend. Sure, you did not believe it, but it’s not like you had anything against wearing your boyfriend’s team merch.
It also meant that you got exclusive Kimi Antonelli interviews whenever you wanted, and you would ask (manipulate) Kimi into messaging any driver you wanted to interview. There was one interview that boosted both of you into the ranks of motorsport.
~~
“Kimi,” You said simply as soon as the podcast started.
“Y/n,” He repeated back as he looked at you over the microphone. You had recently started recording the podcasts to be posted to YouTube after being told to do it by Clement Novalak. He had a successful podcast, so you thought you better listen to his advice.
“2023 Formula 2 Champion has a nice ring to it, don’t you agree?”
“It does, yeah,” He laughed.
“Good, it would suck if you didn't,” You muttered into the microphone. “Anyways, I know this already because I’m cool, but I think my viewers should get the exclusive. Kimi, where will you be going next year?”
“I'm still racing,” He knew that was not what you were asking, but he’s been on enough of your podcasts to know that your fans love the banter.
“No shit, Sherlock,” You deadpanned with a dry laugh. “I mean what team will you drive.”
“Wouldn’t you like to know,” He teased, eyeing you from his place across from you.
“I already know, and if you don’t spill the beans, I’ll say it,” You threatened. “I’ve got your PR manager on speed dial, so don’t even try to threaten me with Sophie.”
“Fine, I guess I’m going to Mercedes,” Kimi sighed in mock hurt, but you knew it was all for show.
“How does it feel to be teammates with the George Russell and share a grid with the guy who introduced us again?”
“Ollie did not introduce us, don’t get the story messed up,” Kimi accused as he leaned forward on the couch, causing you to do the same. “You and your clumsiness is what got us to meet.”
“Oh, please! You were a stuttering mess, too. Do not put all the blame on me!”
“I never said I was blaming you!”
“It sounds like it!”
“Why are we arguing about how we met? We are both saying the same thing!”
“You’re right,” You said normally as you leaned back on the couch before whispering, “for once,” Into the microphone. You looked up at Kimi as he also sat back. “Anyways, now that we’ve settled you’re going to Mercedes, what track are you most excited for?”
“Monaco,” Kimi said immediately.
“How did I know you would say that?”
“Probably because I told you this a couple of days ago when you tested this question on me, and I answered Singapore, but you said that wasn’t good enough.”
“Hey, don’t expose me on my own podcast here!”
“Ok, my answer is Singapore,” He changed his answer as he raised his eyebrows at you, almost asking you to dispute his answer.
“I’ll cut this out,” Spoiler, no you did not. “But I don't think that’s the right answer.”
“What do you mean?” KImi gasped as he laughed in disbelief. “It’s my answer!”
“What is so special about Singapore? It's literally just hot, that’s it!”
“Well, yes, but-” Kimi tried but was cut off by your laughing. Eventually, you died down, and he continued, “The atmosphere is insane.”
“The atmosphere is also insane in Monza or Red Bull Ring but ok.”
“I’ve raced there.”
“Oh! I didn’t even think about that!”
“You thought I would prefer a track that I’ve already driven and won at?”
“I forgot the implications of my own question,” You giggled at yourself. “Anyways, I think that’s enough for today’s episode. The blog post will be up tomorrow, and the video will be up by Sunday. We’ll see you on the track!”

Am I the Asshole for taking my SIL to an anime convention?
My (42M) SIL (29F) has autism and was living with my MIL until she suddenly passed away from heart failure back in 2022. My wife (40F) and I both knew SIL likes to cosplay and go to conventions. Figuring that’s something she and MIL did together, I decided to tell her I want to take her to an anime convention the following year. We chose one that worked out for all of us, timeline wise, along with the costs of transportation, hotel, etc.
Now, this may be a controversial opinion, but I hate anime; nearly all of it is hypersexualized (aside from one, which I’ll get into in a moment). It makes me cringe that my oldest daughter (13F) loves anime, and that that’s all she ever wants to watch. Personally, I feel she’s getting too old for cartoons, but since I also have two younger children, I let it slide.
Prior to actually leaving for con, SIL had sent emails of videos and blogs all about attending anime conventions. Clearly eager to prepare us. She also had outbursts over all sorts of things and lashed out at us on multiple occasions; her emails were often filled with negativity, and simmering rage. In between all of this, we had her relocate to an apartment closer to us.
Anyway, SIL, my daughter, and I go to the airport, we get to the hotel and check-in. We explored the city for a few hours. Now, before all of this, SIL claims she has a “low heat tolerance”, and complained the entire time whenever we walked from Point A to Point B; yes, the city the con was at has good transit and yes I insisted we walk anyway. It’s good exercise! This led to her throwing a fit when we reached a museum I really wanted to check out. We took an Uber back to the hotel and I don’t hear from her again until the next day when we met up to have lunch.
She’s cosplaying a character I don’t recognize and doesn’t tell me anything about them when I asked; it was clearly supposed to be a boy character, though.
Next day, I got a text from SIL; she unexpectedly got her period. Great. Since she asked, I run and get her some pads, only to have to wait an hour in line. Also great. She’s cosplaying another character I don’t recognize. Some magical creature or a doll of some kind. Anyway, us three go into one of the viewing rooms to screen this anime SIL was insistent on showing us. Some Sherlock thing. My daughter likes it, and I’ll admit, I enjoyed it too; I think it is very kid friendly.
Last day, once again, I don’t see or hear from SIL until we meet up in the hotel lobby waiting for our ride to the airport. Seems she had a good time though. She was dressed as one of the kids from that hero anime my daughter likes. She also bought my daughter an axolotl plush (her favorite animal). Going through security was hell; SIL had the nerve to have an attitude the whole time (again later claiming she was overheated and cranky from her period). After we got home she claimed she was never traveling anywhere with me again.
In the days following, she returned the luggage my wife had leant her, having booby trapped it with a photo with the glass broken. Then informs me that her account was overdrawn (I would have gladly paid for more than I did, if she hadn’t been so bitchy).
When we went to her apartment to discuss this, she made the same claims: that she was tired and cranky from the heat, made worse from her period, that I was stressing her out half the time, but that she was grateful despite that because when her mom died, anime conventions were the first thing she was ready to give up.
She also claimed the photo she broke was taken the same year she first attempted to take her own life, and that triggered a panic attack on top of the meltdown she had after returning home.
And the kicker: apparently her mother barely spent any time at conventions, and only sometimes tagged along because she “wanted a vacation”.
Now she claims that I -I repeat I- ruined that Sherlock anime for her. And now is planning to attend a few more cons…Alone.
So what say you? Am I the Asshole?
What are these acronyms?

Welcome to the HOT AND VINTAGE MOVIE STARS poll blog! We are currently processing submissions for the Scrungly Little Guy (gender neutral) contest. The Hot & Vintage Movie Men & Women Tournaments are now wrapped—congrats to Toshiro Mifune and Eartha Kitt! If you are here for the Dracula Daily polls, those will be posted regularly following the progress of the Substack newsletters.
All polls—including ongoing polls, previous rounds, old tournaments, the various shadow brackets, the Dracula Daily polls, and fun mini polls—can be found in the #hotvintagepoll tag.
FAQs:
“Who counts as a scrungly little guy?” I feel like you know a scrungly little guy when you see one. Feel the scrungle within your spirit. Picture them damp.
“What are the scrungly submission rules?” They're all in the link posted above! Here it is again. If I didn't cover something in those rules, send me an ask.
If you’re submitting propaganda for your scrungly little guy, I don’t accept propaganda that’s from beyond the end of 1970. I also don’t accept them performing in TV shows unless it's a cameo appearance where they're clearly playing themselves.
The views expressed in the propaganda are not my own. I don’t submit my own propaganda, and I don’t change what’s submitted beyond fixing obvious spelling mistakes. If you hate a poll bio or a pic, let me know and send me something I can use instead.
I don’t post or boost negative propaganda about any of the hotties. If you really hate that someone is winning, send me positive propaganda for their hot opponent instead. A lot of these hotties were flawed or problematic in some way—or straight up garbage—but for reasons I go into here, I don’t boost anti-propaganda.
If I see repetitive, trolling, and/or bigoted remarks in the comments, I may block you from this bracket. If you want to point out a competitor’s problems in the replies, that’s fine, but if I see consistent bad-faith trolling or targeted harassment of anyone, you will be blocked.
“Tel me again who won the major tournaments?” Eartha Kitt was crowned the hottest Hot & Vintage Movie Woman, and Toshiro Mifune won the Hot & Vintage Movie Man Tournament.
“Tell me more about this shadow realm?” There is too much lore.
“I want to find my favorite hottie from a past tournament!” Try a tag search for them (ie, use a hashtag in my search bar to find every post I’ve tagged them in). If you still haven’t found your hottie, they either did not fit the criteria of being a movie star from 1910-1970 or they did not make it past the prelims.
“My FAQ isn’t on here :(” send me an ask! I love hearing from you guys—just please check these basics first.
Tournament schedule post-hiatus:
Ongoing: Dracula Daily casting polls
Currently accepting submissions: Scrungly Little Guys contest (gender neutral)
After that: Ultimate Hottie Tournament (top brackets of the hot men & hot women competing together)
TBD: Horror Hotties (Frankensteins, Draculas, Brides, etc.)
TBD: Dandy Detectives (Marples, Sherlocks, Nancy Drews, etc.)
fun mini polls that pit sets of characters from the same movie together, like the Philadelphia Story or Seven Brides for Seven Brothers ones (these can be found in the #minis tag)
Thank you for being here! Enjoy the polls.

Pic Hounds
On December 13, a London Instagram user got particularly lucky:
Tumblr media
The person behind this account is an unapologetic pic hound. Something beyond my abilities (I am, believe it or not, painfully shy and incredibly awkward in similar situations) and a rather dubious claim to fame. But I am not here to dissect an online career, heh.
The quick snapshot was taken in front of the Prince Edward Theatre, on Old Compton Street, in LHR's Soho. How do I know it?
Tumblr media
Then, literally two clicks in order to find out where this play is on for a limited season (and featuring Joseph Fiennes 🤭🧨 - now we are talking business) :
Tumblr media
Of course, questions immediately fused: was he alone? yes? no? with whom? who took the pic? She answers he was with a guy (a friend) who took the pic. As an aside, spare the Israeli Peaker who asked first out of Levantine curiosity, I suppose, both accounts insisting are private and have a curiously limited audience. One is clearly a sock account and the other (also being sorry he wasn't 'with a co-star': no shit, Sherlock, I have no clue who you are talking about!), rather questionable credentials for a 'fashion blog'. I really, really wish these people would stop asking altogether, as the answer will always, always be either partial or downright false, at this point in time. Plus, seriously now: how pathetic is this, anyway?
Unlike other times, this pic hound offered even an unsolicited narrative to introduce her story:
Tumblr media
She was 'having breakfast', dear soul, and lo and behold, peekaboo. Maps are wonderful tools, don't you think?
Tumblr media
If x marks the spot, where was Danielle having breakfast, allowing her to be simultaneously able to spot SRH and to sprint like Abebe Bikila, breathlessly asking for a pic?
The only possible guess would be the Caffè Nero, at 43 Frith Street. It was open since 06:30, last Wednesday, it has a modicum of terrace outside (unsure if in winter, though) and it is definitely at a sprintable distance from the theatre.
Best part?
Tumblr media
It's a three minute (leisure) walk from Soho House, on Dean Street.
I will not have the insolence to ask if the pic hound has a day job, though. That is none of my business, really.

Prompts used in this chapter: seasonal illness - the Case of the Frozen Corpse - midnight - jolly
What’s worse than an ill doctor, you wonder? I’ll tell you. It’s an ill consulting detective.
December 15
“I’m dying, John” Sherlock rasps with a hoarse voice.
“No, you’re not,” John says and places a cold cloth on Sherlock’s hot forehead.
The great detective is rarely ill, but when he is, his dramatic personae comes forth with full force. He’s got John’s full sympathy, because John hates being ill himself, and he sucks at being a patient. Where John gets grumpy and aggressive, Sherlock whines and gets clingy as a child with separation anxiety. It can be endearing but also utterly taxing. As long as Sherlock’s fever is this high, John’s reluctant to leave him by himself, and has asked Mycroft to get one of his minions to do some shopping. Mrs. Hudson is also under the weather, so John’s included her shopping list too when he texted the older Holmes brother.
***
When John comes back from checking on their landlady, who doesn’t need a doctor’s attention thank you very much, Sherlock’s dozed off on the sofa. John sighs relieved, finally getting some time to himself. He takes a quick shower and starts to write down their last case on the blog, which he calls The Case of the Frozen Corpse, fully knowing that Sherlock will disapprove.
It never ceases to amaze John how vast Sherlock’s knowledge about obscure establishments and businesses within London is. It had only taken him a glance at the missing man’s correspondence to realise where he was. The butchery hadn’t been mentioned per se; only the word Baron, which evidently was enough for the great detective.
Close to Baron’s Court was a butchery with a large freezer. After a thorough search, that made all the involved cold to the bone, they’d found the corpse of the missing man.
Brilliant, as always, John concludes and posts the entry.
He startles when he hears his name being called. It’s almost midnight and John’s ready for bed and is grateful that he doesn’t have to rouse Sherlock from his sleep.
“How are you feeling, love?” John asks and kneels in front of the sofa.
“Still dying, I’m afraid,” Sherlock mutters, but his temperature is more to John’s liking now.
He’ll probably be fine after a couple of days with enough sleep and rest.
“Let’s get you to bed, and if you’re a jolly good boy I might read my last blog entry as a bedtime story to you,” John promises.
It’s clearly too painful to roll his eyes, but Sherlock manages a sound John chooses to interpret as yes, John…

Can you tell me about your Sherlock Holmes interest? You blogging about it has intrigued me!! Do you have a favourite adaptation you'd recommend? What do you love about the dynamic? I'm very interested to hear your thoughts!
(totally all good if you don't feel like answering, no stress 🩵 your posts just made me super interested but I wouldn't know where to start with engaging in such a huge volume of media)
Ohhhhhh what an ask to wake up to. I hope you know what you've done. You've just given me permission to unleash my full insanity on you. (I love you I love you I love you I lo- bless you)
I'm gonna be so honest I didn't even know where to start until I decided to just tackle your questions one by one so HERE I GO
(Under the cut so everybody who doesn't care can just scroll right by <3)
“Tell me about your SH interest”
Alright, I'll just out and admit it, it all started with BBC Sherlock – I'm sure I'm not alone with this. I absolutely fell in love with this show, then got so thoroughly disappointed by the last season I thought okay, this can't be right. I refuse. So started to read the original ACD Holmes stories and feLL EVEN MORE IN LOVE. The next christmas my brother (bless him) got me this absolutely Stunning collection of (almost) all the Holmes stories:
Tumblr media
And I dove headfirst into them. Couldn't get my nose out of them. Started teaching myself to play the violin because Holmes plays it and I loved him so much, that's how obsessed I was.
For a while my irl best friend and I read the stories together, 1 or 2 per day, and we'd send each other voice messages discussing what happened and what we THOUGHT the solution was and then we'd read on to the end and discuss again and it was soooo fun. We stopped eventually and I read the rest by myself but those evenings are such fond memories for me I just had to include them here too <3
Okay but before this gets too personal, let's move on to the actual questions you asked!
“Do you have a favorite adaptation?”
DO I EVER.
OHHHHH DO I.
YES I DO.
I'm sure every adaptation out there is brilliant in one way or another but, for me, THE Sherlock Holmes will forever be Jeremy Brett in the 1984 Granada TV series. Unfortunately they had to recast his Watson, but fortunately both Watsons are WONDERFUL and no matter how many times I rewatch I can never decide who I love more. Both David Burke and Edward Harwicke are absolutely brilliant.
There are. Several things that set Granada Holmes apart from other adaptations, to me. Let me attempt to list a few of them without getting too carried away.
I have to start with Jeremy Brett because he's just so wonderful. Also, when I read the Holmes stories, the character my brain conjured looked almost exactly like Brett, even before I'd ever seen him. Perfect casting. I mean just look at this legend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, the way he cared about this character – he came up with an entire backstory for Holmes, and it influenced his acting choices and there are some moment where it clearly shines through and it's so heartbreaking. There is a moment in one episode where Watson is talking about another character who was very lonely growing up (while giving Holmes a meaningful look), and Holmes doesn't get any direct verbal response to it but you can see on Jeremy's face that Holmes relates and it still hurts to think about, and YEAH IT HURTS ME TOO.
In the books, Holmes often goes days without eating when he's on a case, because food is a distraction to him – Well, during filming, when everbody else would go have lunch, Jeremy would often stay on set and study the scripts to perfect and refine every nuance of the way he played it. Once again, perfect Holmes.
Also, in Granada Holmes, Holmes is allowed to be silly. So often, Holmes is portrayed as this cold, loveless logic-machine, but that is not who he is!! In Granada, he gets to laugh and have fun and hum and twirl and jump over furniture and just. Be human. Watson brings out that side of him, and Brett portrays that so beautifully.
It was also extremely important to Brett that the TV show remain as faithful as possible to the books - and I've heard that, more than once, he made the writers change the script because he didn't agree with their take on Holmes. (And judging from the way he plays him: he was most likely correct.)
But you know what they changed? The ONE thing that's in the book that they very intentionally changed, that they very VERY purposefully left out? Watson's marriage.
In Granada Holmes, Watson never marries. He's always with Holmes.
Now, you could argue that they simply didn't want to bother with casting a Mary who would never show up anyway, or write it in there just to have it in there when they could be focussing on the fun cases instead. But. And this may be conjecture on my part, but nevertheless. Jeremy Brett was openly bisexual, so I don't think it's absurd to assume that when he read the books, he saw the same thing so many of us see. Which is that these two characters are in love. They weren't allowed to be, by the times they lived in, or even by their author (though there are theories around that which I will not get into now), but nevertheless, the love is very much there.
Another thing this adaptation does in regard to Watson (which I feel many others fail to do) is that it lets Watson be both Holmes' best friend and ALSO his equal. Of course, most of the time Holmes is doing the deducing and Watson is doing the watching and adoring and cheering on, but sometimes, every now and then, Watson gets to do some clever deducing and Holmes watches him and whenever that happens Brett's Holmes gets such heart-eyes it's unbearable to watch. (allow me to link to just this one example) So often in Holmes adaptations Watson gets belittled and made fun of and is under-appreciated, but in Granada, the opposite is true. Holmes states himself, more than once, that he needs Watson, that he would be lost without him, and Brett himself has emphasized this in interviews as well, said that Holmes would likely have died of an overdose years ago if he didn't have his Watson. Watson loves and adores Holmes, but the same is true the other way around. And it comes through So Beautifully in this show.
Have this gif, just because I like it:
Tumblr media
.... I have not managed to keep this short, have I. Sorry.
Shall we move on?
“What do you love about the dynamic?”
I think I already party answered this in the last paragraph about why I love Granada Holmes so much, but. Let me elaborate again. Why shouldn't I? You asked, and you shall receive answers, and I could talk about this all day anyway.
I love that Holmes is very clearly and loudly Different, and not always in an easily-digestible way, but Watson doesn't mind. Not one bit. In fact, he loves him for it.
Holmes can be rude at times, because he forgets about societal conventions – Watson reminds him to be polite, but always with gentleness and kindness and amusement even.
Holmes can be an obnoxious show-off. He loves to talk about how he collected his Clues and got to his Conclusion, he loves to be clever and to be the most intelligent person in the room, he loves to be admired and praised. And Watson loves to listen to him, and loves to praise him. I kid you not, there is a passage where Watson praises Holmes for his cleverness and Watson says. Actually, let me find the passage for you, I need you to see this.
“My companion flushed up with pleasure at my words, and the earnest way in which I uttered them. I had already observed that he was as sensitive to flattery on the score of his art as any girl could be of her beauty.”
Watson knows how much it means to Holmes to be appreciated, verbally, out loud. And he does it, again and again, because it makes them both so happy.
I love how good they are for each other. Holmes provides the adventure, the excitement of the cases, and Watson is his constant, he provides the stability, the calm, routine, he's the home Holmes can come back to after his wild escapades (on the rare occasion that he does go off alone).
I love how protective they are of each other. Most often we see Watson's side of this, there are so many instances where Holmes is threatened by another character, most often a suspect in a case, and the MOMENT they even LOOK at Holmes wrong, Watson will stand up and hover protectively, glare at them, step between them, put his hand on his revolver, or actively throw hands. In most instances, Holmes doesn't need his protection. He's perfectly capable of protecting himself. Still, even knowing that, Watson is more than willing to step between Holmes and whatever perceived danger presents itself, take the punch for him, and make the other party pay.
HOWEVER. There are a few moments, here and there throughout the books, where we see Holmes' side of this. Moments where he knows an investigation will be dangerous, and he apologizes to Watson for involving him in this. (Watson never minds at all). Sometimes he tells him that he understands if Watson would rather not stick around for (insert xyz dangerous thing). (Watson always stays). One time he actively argues with Watson that he has to leave because it is too dangerous and he can't have it on his conscience if something happens to Watson. (Watson does not leave).
In one case, he lets a murderer go free because the crime was done in revenge for a murdered loved one, and Holmes muses that he likely would have done the same, if someone he loved was killed. A few cases later Holmes tells someone that “if [they] had killed Watson, [they] would not have got out of this room alive.”
I love the TRUST between them. So often, Holmes jumps into actions that seem so insane and dangerous, and all Watson can do is follow him and trust that Holmes has a plan. And sometimes (I'm thinking of a specific case here that tore my heart out) Holmes' entire plan hinges on Watson's actions, and specifically Watson's love for him, but Holmes can't TELL him because Watson is a lousy actor, so Holmes just has to trust that Watson will do exactly what needs to be done. “Don't forget, Watson. You won't fail me. You never did fail me.”
And, finally, not really a question but “I wouldn't know where to start.”
I think, personally, I would recommend starting with the first collection of short stories, which is “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes”.
I found the novels a bit harder to get through because of the way they're structured, but that's down to personal preference I'm sure.
If you want to get a feel for the characters before you dive into the books, I can absolutely recommend simply watching the first few episodes of the Granada series. I believe they're all online? Yeah, I found them [here]!
Scandan in Bohemia was never my favorite case (for many reasons, most of which being the way every adaption seems to love to force a love story between Holmes and Irene Adler – thankfully Granada doesn't do this, but it's still simply not my favorite case), but episode 2 and 3, The Dancing Men and The Naval Treaty are two of my ABSOLUTE favorites in the whole series.
So go ahead and treat yourself!!
And if you decide to read the short stories, don't forget that most collections do not include “The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes” - but that one contains one of the most infamous moments in the entire series which fans just go absolutely insane over, so make sure to read that too.
And now I've accidentally written 3 A4 pages.
Whoops. I'm sorry. I hope this is what you wanted.

Detective gang and their tumblr blogs
Daisy's blog: dykes4detecting
- has one blog for absolutely everything she posts, and it's all a pretty pink colour
- does also have a rarely used sideblog for fashion
- occasionally makes alarming but nonchalant posts like 'someone threw me into the Nile yesterday lmao'
- but in the tags of the same post it'll be the most devastatingly tragic admittance of feelings you've ever seen like #it was so scary though... #im scared of showers now because of it and it makes me feel so stupid #like getting my feet wet gives me heart palpitations wtf???
- also makes posts like "you'd think people would put a little more effort to kill me considering the effort I put into stopping exactly that" and nobody can tell if she's shitposting or not
- reblogs a lot of historical lesbian content and the occasional Killing Eve gifset
- also reblogs poetry, especially sapphic obviously
- posts her own blackout poetry which is quite popular
Hazel's blog: woctordatson
- back when she was 12/13 Hazel had an entirely BBC Sherlock themed blog which was in fact actually popular and well known, in tumblr anyway
- did not change her blog name from this phase
- used to write Sherlock/Watson fanfic and post it
- (Daisy brings it up every so often and when she does Hazel tells her she wished she'd drowned (jokingly ofc))
- now has several blogs for different things because she likes having everything organised
- one of the blogs is called a-stamp-a-day where she (you guessed it!) posts a stamp a day, and a little bit about it
- (I hc Hazel to collect them and have a focused interest in them)
- another blog is poetry themed, and she ofc reblogs all of Daisy's blackout poems
- reblogs a lot of those gif stimboards (visual stimmer fr fr)
- LOVES the haiku bot
George's blog: beetles-and-boatles
- posts a lot about the Mary Celeste which are half detailed research posts and the other half is just 'the mystery of the Mary Celeste lives in my head rent free'
- may also post about other unsolved mysteries too
- made one joke post about Daisy acting like he didn't know her and posting 'ok so in December the Guardian says this girl died after a cult member threw her overboard a boat in Egypt and yet the BBC had an article last week reporting how she was at her father's funeral??? I have Questions'
- however it blew up and now Daisy Wells is lowkey an unsolved mystery tumblr superstar. George finds this hilarious
- also posts pictures of his pet beetles and infodumps about them
- very very very occasionally makes an incredible vague post about his crush like 'he adjusted my school tie and I leant into his hand,,, having a crush is horrific'
Alex's blog: spaceistrans
- says he doesn't have a doctor who blog but so clearly has a doctor who blog
- has doctor who quote "In 900 years of time and space, I’ve never met anyone who wasn’t important" as his header
- draws a lot of cute little pride icons, especially aromantic ones that are fairly popular
- also posts a lot about space like "there's an eclipse today!!!" and then he makes a post of the times in different countries you can see it
- reblogs all of George's unsolved mystery researched posts with super supportive tags like #this is so well researched!!!
- has a scheduled post each month that just says 'fuck you mom' (Daisy spam reblogs this every time it shows up on her dash)
- reblogs a lot of dw fanart and gif stimboards

Chess and Deduction
Okay so, this blog is meant to be the place where i put a lot of my more fluid ideas, things like rants about a specific concept or theory in deduction, or posting some deduction that i made. I tend to use @amateur-deductions for more article-like posts explanations so here's a bit of a rant for you about what deductions can look and feel like.
So recently i've been answering questions about how to squeeze information out of the things you observe, how to break down what you see into information that can constitute as actual deductions. And while i was in that mindset to make one of my last posts, my Youtube feed blessed me with videos of Levy Rozman, (Gothamchess on youtube for those of you who don't know), and i've started to draw some parallels between chess and deduction.
Tumblr media
Now, i'm by no means an amazing chess player, i've been more into it recently since i have time, but it's not really something i dedicate a lot of practice to. That being said, Levy said something in one of the videos i watched that caught my attention: As he was explaining very basic chess concepts, he mentioned how once you start pushing your pieces forward and entering the middle-game, the moves you make in the opening start tying together.
Essentially what he pointed out is that, once the opening is done, your pieces start to naturally intertwine with each other, they protect each other and take control of a plethora of squares, so many that sometimes you don't realize it until the game starts to develop more. You start to notice that the knights you moved in the opening can attack a certain way because the rooks that you also moved in the opening are conveniently in a position where they can cover the attacking pieces. Or you notice that as the opponent pushes pieces to attack you there's no reason to panic because a piece you'd moved during the opening is conveniently guarding the area the opponent is pushing into.
Now, you may be wondering what the hell does this have to do with deduction. Well in the same way that you don't always have to think about every single little implication about your moves during a chess opening, and even if you don't, you still can start formulating a plan in the middle-game with what you built during said opening, in deduction you're not necessarily always looking to make a "plan" from the beginning, or to set up your observations a specific way to get to a specific conclusion.
Tumblr media
The way that deduction works a lot of the time is, you just start observing, maybe drawing small conclusions like someone's handedness or their extraversion level, and then as you start piling onto these conclusions you start to realise that a lot of them conveniently tie together, you start to notice that you can make forward progress because a new conclusion that you might consider happens to be supported by an observation or conclusion you made in the "opening". In the same way that, in chess, as you start to get into the middle-game you realize you can attack with certain pieces because other pieces are now set up in a way that can defend them. You're looking to realize that you can push forward in your conclusions because previous observations and simple deductions have been set up to defend these conclusions.
So taking a deduction from Sherlock for example. As you look at someone's phone and start to realize that it's expensive, and that it has an engraving and scratches, you start to draw small conclusions, like "huh, this is a gift because this person is clearly not in an economical position to buy this", or "huh, this has had a previous owner". This could be considered the "opening", you're sort of just going through each piece, developing it, getting control of the center of the board, and just scanning around for your next moves.
Tumblr media
Once you have a solid footing, once you have a solid opening position, you start pushing forward, and start realizing that the pieces that you've set up can start moving and tying together, so you make a move that looks optimal with the piece set up (the information) that you have, something like "well if the phone was given to him by a previous owner, and that previous owner is a close family member, why not move in with them? hm, maybe they don't get along". And as the deduction goes on you try to keep making these optimal moves, moves that are supported with what you've already uncovered.
And like a chess game, yes, sometimes you blunder pieces, sometimes you reach a conclusion that isn't supported by any evidence, and it leads to you loosing the game. Sometimes you make a counting error and you realize that your pieces are not as protected as you though. Translating this from the example, sometimes you think every conclusion you're drawing makes sense and is fully supported, only to be corrected and realize that you didn't account for something, or that there was another, simpler explanation for what you've found, and this leads to loosing the game.
And when this happens the next move is to plug the chess game into an engine and see what you did wrong and what you did right, did you blunder anything? did you make a move that was horrible but the opponent didn't notice? did you miss a mate in one? or in 3? or in 5? In other words, did you reach the right conclusion with the wrong reasoning? or did you miss a clue that would have led you to a massive deduction? or did you just jump to a conclusion without a good base for it? As always the goal is to analyze this and make sure these are not mistakes you make in your next game
Here's where i'll leave this rant, i do hope it was informative (hopefully it wasn't confusing). If you have any questions feel free to send them over in my asks.
Happy Observing!

You won't reply to me but I have to say something as well. They deleted their posts because followers (I'm one of them) explicitly asked them to delete them. You can check his blog to see.
I honestly feel you are creating so much hatred out of nothing. I am even afraid to show you my identity, knowing you will come after me if I do. Only because I have a different perspective on it all.
Didn't this whole discussion start with the supposed toxicity of the Sherlock mod? Who was trying to prevent an RPer from leaving? That's precisely what he did to John, according to John's posts on his blog (you have to read between the lines), perhaps to Mycroft even (dunno for sure). But who knows for sure they did? Isn't it logically that you beg someone not to leave because you want to continue what you're doing?
I saw the last post on the John blog and was quite moved. He always sounds like a very reasonable guy, unlike Sherlock, unlike you guys on here. Sorry.
So, we ask you to stop this crusade. I will also ask my friends to send you a message just in case. Stop it. You are hurting people who don't deserve it.
*le sigh*
I'm afraid you haven't been actually paying attention if you think I can see his blog. After our conversation in a comment section, the John mod blocked me. Which I posted about.
If you have read all my posts, etc you would see that I've answered every single ask except two. Even the spicy ones sent by Harriet mod as themselves and as anon and the 3 by the Mycroft/John mod as anonymous. Even, when John sent basically the same message 3 times (my inbox, ask, and tagging me (as John) ((which can be considered harassment)), I never "came after" them. Not like they have for most of the other mods, including ones OUTSIDE of their rp group.
Isn't. That. Interesting.
So, no, I'm not going to "come after" you for being polite and expressing yourself.
Now on to the good stuff.
So the John mod will flip-flop on what they strongly believe, on a whim, for a stranger.
Take note on that.
Looks like you are referencing the post Dump made? Allow me to remind you (which isn't my responsibility btw) what you are talking about if you are. Dump said that (paraphrasing):
"...consult-sherlock begged me to stay. They all contributed to my decision to block JOHN, SHERLOCK, AND MORIARTY."
If you want the exact verbiage, go look for it. It's in the tag "a scandal in tumblr".
We don't know the nature of the begging. And we can't ask the source because they specifically said to LEAVE THEM ALONE. Begging, is not inherently wrong? Not sure what you're insinuating here. Maybe you are assuming how they were begging was wrong? If you have any insider information on this I would very much be interested.
If you call avoidance, deflection, refusing to break character on a concerning issue (referring to when this was just about the fishy miscommunication) as "Reading between the lines", that's a personal problem for you. All that I mentioned in this paragraph are all red flags. Very red. On fire, red. And no one can help you see these till you're ready. That's why so many people stay with OBVIOUSLY (and sometimes not so publicly obvious) awful partners that mistreat them, why we excuse our (our as in as whole, not saying you and me specifically) abusive parents behavior, or side with an abusive government(s) that sanctions genocide.
As for being reasonable...I am reasonable. Till I'm not. I will never be reasonable to bullying/abuse. Especially when it involves little kids and old people. I will go fucking feral. And with this situation, after the pretzels John clearly twisted himself into, the PUBLIC harassment of Greg, yeah, for sure, I'm more in my feels in this. That being said, I haven't lost all rational thought. Cuz these are grown adults that are involved and feral me isn't needed.
I can easily adjust my stance on a situation don't have all information on. Because I'm intelligent like that.
Remember the Amber Heard case?
Thankfully, I could wait till a public court case to see all the evidence presented in an organized manner to make my judgements.
(cuz it's fucking hilarious)
However, so many people were upset at being "wrong". Ooooor they doubled down in their previous beliefs DESPITE the clear evidence. Its ok to change your views as new information and actual facts come out.
This is called critical thinking. (Side note: they were both abusive to each other but it's clear who "started" it. Reactive abuse it still abuse though, y'all. And if you see this in yourself, recognize it, get help, and you can improve. I believe that all people can become better versions of themselves...but that's because I can't squash the optimism that lives deep down inside me)
I'll keep this simple: there's no crusade. Just presentation of evidence, my knowledge, conclusions, and feels.
I'm rather allergic to holy wars that justify murder and genocide.
Oh? You're going to ask your friends to message me to stop? You mean you're gonna recruit people to try and bully me into submission? Gonna harass me if I don't do what you want? Gonna jumpstart your own foray into abuse?
Be careful, it's a slippery slope. And once you start sliding down it, it's incredibly hard to claw your way back up.
Side note: I'm not going to be anyone's brain, legs, fingers. All of you can think for yourselves, can find the info yourselves, and type things in yourselves. The information is there. Stop being lazy if you actually want to know

Hello...First, I'm really grateful in finding your blog. I'm a newbie in this fandom (Yuumori), just started watching the anime and reading the manga from early this year. Hope you don't mind if I ask a few things....
When Sherlock and William met again in the train, Will never told his name before, so Sherlock found out himself right? And that train scene ("Catch me if you can, Mr. Holmes" & Sherlock's reaction), is it Will and Sherlock's way of flirting? That scene made me interested in Yuumori in the first place.... So for William, Sherlock is the first person who understands him as a person. Does that mean, Will's family and friends don't want to try to know him better (so Will felt lonely)? At the final act, when Will said that Sherlock has bested him, does it mean Sherlock is smarter than Will? Also is Bond a woman crossdress as a man or really a trans man? Sorry for my stupid questions....
Really agree with you that Sherlock and William's relationship is definitely queer....
Correct, William never told Sherlock his name (let alone Louis's). This was a display of Sherlock's investigational abilities.
(Flirting. It was flirting. It was a peacocking mating display. Tell me I'm wrong.)
Whatever it was, it was certainly Sherlock trying to impress William and potentially catch him off guard. He definitely suspected Liam by then, and I think the entire The Two Detectives arc was Sherlock testing him for it and he walked off that train certain.
Whatever the fuck William was doing on the train was honestly very embarrassing for him and mortifying for Louis and very very enjoyable for Sherlock and us readers.
(It's also flirting, but tbh, I think they started flirting when they first met anyway)
Whatever it was, it was certainly William indicating he was willing to play the game Sherlock was offering.
I do not think it's fair to William's friends and family to suggest they don't "want" to know him better or that they don't try. They clearly do on multiple occasions. But there is something very different in someone clearly getting you from the start because they are like you. Mycroft knows Sherlock very well, and yet William was still the first person Sherlock felt properly seen by.
It's not about Knowing, it's about Understanding, about Relating.
William was definitely lonely as hell, but that wasn't because he didn't have people who knew him and loved him around him. It was because he didn't have someone who understood him in a way he'd never even realized he wanted.
There's an old chart from Jump SQ where technically William was ranked as "smarter" than Sherlock by the creators, but I think that was taking into consideration the situations as a whole, and I don't think it's a fair statement.
Anyway, what William really said on that bride wasn't so much about Sherlock winning, but him losing. He was admitting defeat to Sherlock.
This wasn't because Sherlock is "smarter" than him. Sherlock did something he'd never anticipated and had achieved his own goals, while William was proven to have been wrong the entire time.
It was, imo, a sign that William had begun to be inspired to live and see the world differently.
Bond is definitely and undeniably a trans man or a nonbinary person. It's very frustrating to me that people still doubt Bond's trans-ness.

3 June
The detective had a visitor this afternoon.
I was going to go up to my room, but the detective protested, “If you would be so good as to remain, Doctor, to hear our client’s plea for yourself so that you may come to your own opinion on the matter.”
His visitor burst into laughter. “Are you really a doctor?”
He was a young man, early thirties, a recently healed sprain to his left ankle and several smaller, superficial injuries to his arms, and evidence of prolonged exposure, but in overall good health.
But I answered, “Yes.”
“Afghanistan or Iraq?” he asked with a mischievous smile, but if there was a joke, I didn’t get it.
“Neither. I work in Syria.”
“Of course, of course, there’s always something, isn’t there, Sherlock?” He stepped forward to shake my hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m his dear Boswell, or at least I was—I see he’s found another. I don’t suppose you keep a blog?”
“No.”
“Well, at least between the two of us we’d make a satisfactory Watson. How are you getting along? Has he popped the question yet?”
“No, I’m just here while I get everything in order to go back. You’re exes?”
“We briefly shared a flat,” the detective said with a dismissive wave.
“He tried to make me his Watson, more like. We had a fun romp or two, but it wasn’t anything serious. And I’m a reporter; I didn’t have time to run around solving mysteries.”
The detective interrupted, “Are you here on some matter of business, or shall I see you to the door?”
“Oh, alright, alright, no need to get your hat in a twist. I ran into a little mystery while I’ve been on the London beat, and it made me think of you.”
“Do go on.” The detective motioned for the reporter to take a seat, and I sat back down on the couch.
“So, I was interviewing for an article—I can’t say anything about it until it comes out—but one of my sources has run into some trouble that I thought might be right up your alley. He’s a funny old man who collects statues, mostly just trinkets, but apparently, someone thought they were worth enough to break in and shatter one of his busts.”
“Not Napoleon?” the detective asked.
“No, but I thought that would catch your interest. The police, of course, don’t have any leads and are pretty indifferent to the whole thing if the old coot’s to be believed, but I thought you might be able to shine a light in the darkness or whatever it is you do. What do you say, Sherlock?”
“It certainly presents some features of interest—Doctor?”
I was surprised to find all eyes on me. “I don’t see what the fuss is. It’s just a statue, isn’t it?”
“That is precisely the question, Doctor! Why would someone go through the trouble of breaking into a man’s flat to shatter a plaster bust?” To the reporter, he said, “I am much obliged to you for bringing this matter to my attention.”
“All I ask in return is first rights to the story.”
The detective gave a dismissive wave, but I thought there might have been some humour in his tone, “I claim no credit. My name need figure in no newspaper. The work itself, the pleasure of finding a field for my peculiar powers, is my highest reward.”
The reporter excused himself with a laugh to return to his work.
“And we have our own work to attend to,” the detective declared when the reporter had gone.
The detective disappeared into his room and, a moment later, brought out a large box, which he set on the coffee table. He sat back down in front of it and opened it, and it unfolded into three tiers of shelves crammed with more gels and powders than I could count. I hardly knew what any of it was, but he clearly knew what he was doing.
I guessed that he was going to start powdering his face, but instead, he began with a wad of clay that he moulded around his nose and eyes. Then, I think, he layered on some powder with a big brush. There were also several smaller brushes involved, half a dozen more powders and fluids, and at one point a pencil or two that he used to draw lines onto his face that somehow disappeared into natural folds in his skin. Lastly, there was a thinning wig and scruffy beard.
When the remarkable transformation was complete, he looked like he had aged twenty-some years in as many minutes, his cheeks filled so that he looked well-nourished, healthy despite some rosacea. However, beyond that, he looked like he was truly an entirely different man with a particularly prominent, bulbous nose and a perpetually surprised air that must have come from something the detective did to his eyes.
He grinned at me and held his mouth open to fit in a pair of dentures with crooked, yellowed teeth. Then he returned the box to his room and he was gone for just a moment before he came limping out, dressed in several threadbare layers. He could have been any homeless man on the streets of London, and I doubt I would have recognized him at all if I hadn’t seen the transformation myself—and even then, it was hard to see the detective beneath all the makeup.
He took a hobbling bow.
I had to ask, “What’s the plan?”
“A conjurer gets no credit when he has explained his trick,” the detective said, but I saw a rare smile beneath his fake whiskers. “I have my methods. Don’t wait up, Doctor.”
And with that he was gone.
He’s still out now. It’s gotten late—the sun has set and a steady rain taps against the window. I just hope he knows what he’s doing. It would be easy to suffer from hypothermia on the streets tonight.

The codependency in Johnlock-
I was thinking about this today.
In Many Happy Returns, John says, "I can tell you what to do. You can stop being dead."
He's drinking a lot and he still hasn't moved past the 'please stop being dead' thing since TRF. Everyone else has moved on with their lives but John is still stuck at that point. He's still grieving deeply even after two years.
If Sherlock hadn't returned to London, if he'd actually died, John would've been fixated on that thing for the rest of his life. Sure, he started dating Mary and was going to propose to her in that restaurant but I really don't think he would've been quite invested in that relationship with her
(He's not invested in that relationship with her even in Sherlock's presence but still. You get my point.)
If Sherlock had died, he would've just drunk a lot, with sleepless nights, self blaming, survivor's guilt, etc and his suicidal tendencies would've returned.
He would've married Mary, life would've continued normally (on the surface) and at one point John would've come to about Mary's criminal record. He would've still got to know about that even in that situation because of CAM (or through some other source).
Double heartbreak. John would've been completely alone in this whole world.
He doesn't get along with Harry, he doesn't mention his parents at all- probably they're not in the picture- and he doesn't have any other friends apart from Sherlock. Mike tried to reach out him in ASIP but John's response, in turn, was quite cold.
He wasn't quite keen on continuing his profession as a GP (we'd seen that much in The Blind Banker). He would've gone to his new clinic for some time but he would've done his job in a half-arsed way.
He didn't have any other hobbies either. He'd stopped updated his blog after Sherlock's supposed death.
I believe if Sherlock had died for real with no possibility of coming back, it's quite a high possibility that John would've committed suicide, eventually.
The same thing happens in Series 3. John gets married. Sherlock's drug addiction has relapsed.
J-What kind of case would need you doing this?
S-I might as well ask you why you’ve started cycling to work. (X)
This theme is surprisingly carried over to S4 as well even if that season doesn't feel connected to the rest of the show.
John abandons Sherlock after Mary's death. Sherlock is high out of his mind, weeks away from death, he's going crazy in 221 B.
John is at his own place in The Lying Detective, drinking way too much once again, clearly not okay. He's just this 👌🏻 close to dying as well. (He's grieving for Mary but lack of Sherlock's presence is also a contributory factor).
John has pushed Sherlock away himself and he's actively hating on him in this episode but he even in that state he obviously needs Sherlock (he'd never admit it but it's quite clear that he does).
John's desperation was obvious in the beginning of His Last Vow too.
J-Is it Sherlock Holmes you're looking for? Because I haven't seen him in ages.
M- A month.
He's visibly angry and frustrated at literally everyone who's NOT Sherlock. He's dying to meet him even if it's only been a month since his wedding day.
So what I'm trying to say is, as much as I love Johnlock, I can't overlook this unbelievable amount of codependency in their relationship. It's unhealthy but fun to have a close look at.
You try separating them from each other, they'll become physically miserable and they will throw themselves in front of fatal danger which would eventually lead to their death in quite a short period of time.
I used to think that 'I can't live without you' was supposed to be a cliché. Just an exaggeration that people say to their significant others.
Apparently that's not the case with Sherlock and John. It becomes quite literal when these two are concerned.
Conclusion- If you write a Holmes adaptation or a story, you don't ever seperate Holmes and Watson from each other. You do that and you watch them die (for real, this isn't even an exaggeration).
D'you know what's actually frustrating?
It's the fact that the creators of this show already knew about this. They were the ones who wrote their version of Holmes and Watson like that and the above mentioned subplots are taken from their show. They wrote it in that way themselves. The codependency and everything.
And yet they did exactly that. Separate Holmes from his Watson, that is (in TST and TLD).
They broke the rules of their own show and that's why here I am, ranting about the show even in 2023 lol.

Hello dear! I'm really glad to find your blog cuz i've been searching for new writers for the past two days, so here's my request: student sherlock x reader (it'd be nice it they were 16 since i'm that age). Remember that scene on Noahitic (idk if it written like this?) When some women were asking Sherly to guess pepole living? Ok it happens in the class where some asshole girls hate reader and askes him to guess her living, they thought she wasn't hearing but she definetly did so when he was about to talk about her she stopped him saying that's her private life which made him curious about her and the girls got pissed and started arguing with her, for his surprise she has a good speech and she kept pissing them off till he stopped them, at lunch time he asked her to have the meal together, they chatted and laughed togehter and he fell so hard for her. Uummmm, I know it's long and really sorry for that T_T (if you could do pt 2 tell me pls so i can tell you the rest in my mind🙈 really sorry for bothering❤)
A/N: thank you for your request and you are absolutely not a bother at all!! I’m very excited for this because I’ve never written for Sherlock before but I’ll do my best! I hope you like it <3
Tumblr media

University lectures were always boring. The sound of the chalk scratching against h the dry blackboard was going to be the death of you. Still, not many people like yourself got a chance at learning in a university so you sucked it up and continued writing your notes as ink stained your fingers.
Once the bell rang to signal the lecture was over, you rushed in the direction of the library, careful not to accidentally bump into anyone, especially not your classmates.
Because you were a lower class girl who somehow managed to exceed in academics and get into a prestigious university, a lot of people looked down on you and projected their insecurities onto you. Was it wrong of them? Of course. But was it also understandable..?
Nah.
Once the doors on the library had swung open, you prayed that the book you had seen the other day would still be there.
Thankfully, it was. It took you a while to reach onto that top shelf as the university campus was more designed for people…older than your 16 year old self.
Once you had taken the book, your rushed over to your usual seat, only to realise that a group of girls a few years older than you, clearly in the university only to study more feminine courses as told by their wealthy parents, had made themselves comfortable in your usual place.
They were sat surrounding a tired and almost frustrated looking boy who seemed to be your age.
To you, he resembled a bird. A raven to be more precise. His dark locks were tied into a messy ponytail and a small baby hair had turned into a curl on top of his fringe. His dark eyes were narrow and if your looked close enough, you could see faint traces of eye bags and dark circles, indicating he didn’t sleep well.
Now you were faced with an issue. Would you go and tell them that you would like to sit there and stand your ground. Knowing those girls, who disliked you a bit too much to not be considered obsession, they purposely sat there only to annoy you.
Or would it be more suitable for you to walk over to one of the couches in the corner, a good distance away from them so you could read in peace.
You chose the latter, of course.
You walked passed the girls, noticing glared and dirty looks from the corner of your eye as you walked passed. As you sat down, there loud and high pitched giggles, clearly trying to either gain attention from male peers or they were trying to make you jealous of their so called ‘friendship’ that relied so heavily on wealth and status, had resumed.
After a few minutes of reading and then getting distracted, you noticed that the library had gotten quiet. Your eyes remained on the yellowed pages but your attention drifted back to the group of girls surrounding that boy.
They were now speaking at a low whisper. You deduced they were trying to hide something from you based on the glances they gave you and the small gestures in your direction.
As you recalled, the only words you had heard from the tired boys mouths was him making deductions on the lives of other people. Nothing too scandalous just things such as hobbies or pets. You’d seen the girls pester the boy, asking him for more juicy gossip rather than just boring guesses.
Being the quiet kid meant that you had grown used to people talking about you or making remarks such as “I didn’t know she could speak!” In attempts to offend or irritate you but for you, it meant that you succeeded in keeping your personal life private, something very few noblemen and noblewomen could achieve.
You began to eavesdrop on their hushed conversation, and you came to the conclusion that they wanted the raven-boy to make deductions about you.
Sherlock Holmes. That was his name. He had grown popular around campus for his intellect and flawless deductions. It surprised you that you had realised so late as you were almost always aware of everyone and everything going on within the student community. Then again, you had expected him to be slightly more lively and sociable.
‘Maybe the girls were beginning to annoy him too.’ You thought.
“The quite girl in the corner? Well she-“ Sherlock was interrupted by your voice suddenly appearing behind him.
“I’d rather you not gossip about my personal life.” You glanced around at the girls who stood before you with a glare
“You really aren’t all that you think you are, (last name).” One girl chimed in.
“Yeah!” Said another “how do you know we were talking about you anyways? You’re so stuck up! Thinking your worthy of being in such an establishment!”
You deadpanned stay their pathetic attempt to cover up their gossiping habits.
“Really? I understand that you failed most of the tests to get here, Miss Penelope, but surely you could come up with a more intelligent lie.” You raised an eyebrow “or is your smooth brain incapable of such activities?”
“Why you-!”
“So what if we were talking about you? It’s not like you have anything to hide, right, (last name)?” One of the taller ones asked. You hadn’t seen her before so you didn’t know her name. She had long auburn hair and blue eyes that angled upwards to accompany her cat like smile.
“Thankfully I don’t need to hide anything, unlike Miss Sophie’s father who is currently having an affair with a girl of her age but that’s not my business.” You brushed a hand through your hair as you nodded to a blonde girl who was on the verge of tears. “ If your lives are so dull that you have to fantasise about my life, perhaps that’s a you problem. Get a life.” You walked off in silence and sat back down on the couch, smirking secretly at their defeated faces.
Unknown to you, Mr Holmes was watching you, in awe of your ability to shut them down so fast. He was grateful you had given him the opportunity to sneak away and have a cigarette instead of letting his brain cells deteriorate in such foul company.
The older girls of the group had attempted to go and continue arguing with you, hoping you could physically assault them and maybe even get yourself expelled but Sherlock was quick to come to your defence.
“Ladies, if there’s anything I can deduce for you, is that that plan of yours won’t work. Miss (name) is way too calm and composed for that.” He said before giving you a quick glance and then rushing out of the library to have a cigarette before his next lecture.
After the encounter in the library, Sherlock had been thinking about you for ages, hoping to get to know a girl like yourself. Someone who wouldn’t make his brain rot like the rest of his peers.
He was slightly nervous when lunch came about to go and talk to you while you ate in the cafeteria. What if you thought he was pretentious or rude?
Still, he sucked up all his worries and approached you while you sat in the corner, one empty seat opposite you.
“Hey!” He smiled as he sat in front of you. You raised your head to meet his now brighter blue eyes and gave him a polite smile “we met in the library. (Name) (last name), is it?”
“It is. You must be the oh so famous Sherlock Holmes, correct? I heard you could deduce the most interesting things from these perfect nobles.”
“It is I!” He laughed. “You don’t mind if I sit here, do you?”
“Go ahead. As long as you aren’t anything like those girls from the library…”
“Right, right. Sorry about that-“
“It’s alright. I could tell you didn’t want to be there any less than I did. I’m impressed that you made it out with a fully functioning brain.”
As the conversation continued, Sherlock had only grown more and more infatuated with all the little things you did. The furrowed eyebrows when you thought deeply about something, the fidgeting of your hands indicating you were nervous at first that managed to fade. Everything about you was beautiful to him.
“You don’t mind having a meal together..like soon?”
“How soon?” You asked, a hand pressing against your soft cheek
“Maybe tomorrow? I’d like to get to know you better.” He stuttered, a bit embarrassed.
“I think you’re not the only one. I’ll grant you the ‘honour’ of getting to know me, Sherlock.”
He grinned in triumph “You won’t regret it, (name)!”
As time continued, you and Sherlock had grown close and he could only fall harder and harder with each encounter the two of you shared.
You would always listen to him talk and understand his fast paced and intelligent mind. You reassured him that he was good for you.
You had also grown fond of him. Every little deduction he would make about you made you feel understood for the first time in your life. He never inquired into your personal life although he already knew as much as he needed to.
“What are we, (name)?” He once asked you while he sat next to you, gazing at the night sky.
“Lovers.” You smiled
