Was playing video games the other day and something clicked. I wish I could use it/its pronouns specifically in like. A pokemon way. In all of the games despite many pokemon having a gender, it’s almost always referred to as it in the dialogue bubbles. Like..... It as in this creature, big or small or weak or powerful, that you love like a pet, like a partner.

Realizing that just reminded me that pokemon is really the first time I saw any kind of gender outside of the binary (I was playing it as soon as I could read and debatably even before that, when my sisters would read it aloud to me as I pressed buttons). I distinctly remember asking about pokemon like magnemite and unknown and the legendaries and my sisters explaining that some of them just don’t have a gender. Of course I was like 6 so I just went “ok cool. So can I still breed them to get more?” When I first learned about being non-binary (much later obviously) I was like. Oh!! Just like pokemon :)

And it’s really interesting, thinking about it, how gender works in pokemon (I mean obviously it’s because they’re based on animals but still!!). There’s pokemon species that only have one gender (never explained how they breed except ditto but ditto aren’t everywhere so????). The male/female ratio for different species is different. Some can only evolve if they’re a certain gender, or have different evolution paths depending on it. Azurill have a one in three change of changing gender when evolving to Marill??? Some pokemon have physical variations with gender while others don’t and it can be anything from a single extra marking to a different color. They implications of ditto being able to breed with literally anything???

I just started replaying pmd:eos about a week ago and noticed just how ambiguous the gender tends to be in it. You don’t know the gender of literally any side character until some other character says something about it (and some are never specified!). Despite you and your partner technically having genders (in the opening quiz it’s one of the mandatory questions and it also affects what pokemon you can get which ?????? Doesn’t make sense considering none of the choices are actually gender exclusive but whatever) neither are ever referred to with any pronouns or anything.

Anyway, I think it’s really cool.

Pokemon Card of the Day #3100: Ditto Prism Star (Lost Thunder)

Ditto Prism Star played the standard Ditto role in the sense that it transformed into other things. This version was a Prism Star, giving Ditto one shot total, but it made up for it for being able to evolve into any Stage 1 card you wanted. While there were a lot of good decks based on just Basic Pokemon at the time, the fact that a card could fit into literally any deck with multiple Stage 1 lines was still pretty crazy. The question wasn't if Ditto Prism Star got into decks, it was how many would it fit into.

The stats here, to be fair, were really bad. 40 HP was not going to be taking any but the weakest attacks. Ditto Prism Star was largely reliant on the rest of the deck to provide protection, whether it was from having an attacker that was a more pressing issue for the opponent or from locking things down for a turn. The Fighting Weakness, amusingly, mattered a little in the SUM-On format due to Buzzwole and Buzzwole-GX still being reasonably good there and having attacks that did just 30 damage. The Retreat Cost was 1, mostly for when you were unlucky enough to start with this. Decks running Ditto Prism Star tended to run a good amount of Basics, so it was only an occasional problem.

Almighty Evolution was the Ability here, and also the only thing Ditto did since there wasn't even an attack on the card. It was, however, very powerful. Once during your turn, you could put any Stage 1 card from your hand onto Ditto Prism Star to evolve it. There was the standard evolving restriction here, in that you couldn't evolve during Ditto's first turn in play, so you had to keep it alive for a turn. That's where the help mentioned came into play.

Ditto Prism Star was an automatic inclusion in any deck with multiple Stage 1 lines. The obvious, and most common, partner was Zoroark-GX, which was a very powerful option in the SUM-On format. It could pair with Lycanroc-GX, Dewgong, Weavile, Golisopod-GX, and a host of others, and Ditto Prism Star could evolve into whatever was needed. It could even provide a way into something like Alolan Muk for decks with just 1 line of Stage 1's. Once rotation happened and these decks mostly got worse, Ditto Prism Star had fewer uses, but still got into a solid number of decks. Stall decks featuring things like Magcargo, Pidgeotto, and Cinccino could still make fine use of Ditto Prism Star.

Ditto Prism Star was a card any serious player had a copy of. Being restricted to 1 per deck and having such low HP still wasn't enough to prevent it from being a staple in every deck with multiple Stage 1 Pokemon. Just having that flexibility, as well as the option to toss in a random Stage 1 for a specific match-up if you wanted, was a big deal. If you could use Ditto Prism Star effectively, you would almost always be better off doing so.

hi just found your blog and it's great seeing a pokebiologist recording their studies and providing fun facts for everyone to access! i don't know if you've gotten this question before, but i've always wondered: have their been studies on how items affect what pokemon hatch when breeding? for example, what is it with incense items that makes 'baby' pokemon hatch instead of what we'd usually see (ex. azurill instead of marill)?

Pokemon and Insence Breeding

(Tldr at the end)

There have been some studies on it, and here's the best way I can describe it. Think of it as how smoking while pregnant can affect the baby in the womb. Let's use Roserade as an example. If you give a (female) Roserade a rose incense and breed it with a pokemon of the same egg group (or Ditto), the Pokenon coming out will be a Budew instead of a Roselia. It's also possible for Budew to appear in the wild since they can just conceive in a rosebush, which would have the same smell. But anyways, the reason the species changes is because Pokemon have a lot more infinity energy inside of their eggs; the same infinity energy that appears when a pokemon evolves. This kind of evolution infinity energy is a lot more sensitive to the changes in the environment, which can even make the Pokemon in the egg change species! It's also the reason why, in most cases, when a Pokemon hatches, they appear to be evolving into the egg instead of coming out of it.

Tldr: Pokemon egg is filled with infinity energy, and the egg is basically an incubator. The infinity energy is subject to change while still forming, and the smell/smoke/incense can affect that. Infinity energy will change, resulting in a new pokemon.

Hey, A YouTuber Put Together Trade Codes For SV

Uhhhh...  Austin John Play I guess?  IDK, it was being shared on Twitter is where I saw it lol.  Seems like the same was done for BDSP?

Basically, you enter the 8-digit code and hope to get matched with somebody who’s got the opposite offering, the 8-digit code is the same for both X for Y and Y for X so you might end up with X for X happening or Y for Y--if so just quit out and try again.  The codes are for starters, version exclusives, and Ditto to try and swap for the Masuda Method (again, just quit out if the summary of the other Ditto says it’s the same language as yours).  (Video describing this is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqeuYcwF1xU)

[A small parcel has arrived! It's tied up with a ribbon in that all too familiar shade for Ghost Type classification. Inside there's 7 glittery gel pens, all colors of the rainbow plus pink. There's also a small plush keychain of a ditto. Also in the parcel is a note written in purple glitter pen, the handwriting is neat and formal. It reads:

[A small parcel has arrived! It's tied up with a ribbon in that all too familiar shade for Ghost Type classification. Inside there's 7 glittery gel pens, all colors of the rainbow plus pink. There's also a small plush keychain of a ditto. Also in the parcel is a note written in purple glitter pen, the handwriting is neat and formal. It reads:

"Hello! You can never go wrong with glittery pens! And for the plush, may it use transform and turn into your partner pokemon ;p Enjoy the gift! -VYR"

Hiiiiiii!! Could you make Pokemon Teams for Rorschach and/OR Daniel/Nite Owl from Watchmen? I feel like they’d have some cool teams!!!

Well leave it to one of my favorite people to get this back up and running. This was surprisingly hard, but I had a good time. I decided to do Rorschach for now, but if the interest is still there I might do Daniel/Nite Owl later ^.^

For now let's take a look at Team Rorschach!

Team Rorschach

1. Charmeleon

I think charmander was his first pokemon. Being the son of a prostitute, poor dude was picked on a lot, I imagine his charmander would literally light fires under his bullies asses. Honestly the thought is extremely hilarious. So why a charmeleon and not a charizard? Charizard is too big...too loud...too noticeable. No one is usually suspicious of mid range or basic pokemon. Charmeleon is very protective and proactive whenever he's on a mission.

2. Ditto

Hear me out: he would totally have a ditto on cases where he would need extreme discretion or on the rare occasion where he was needed in two places at once. That's right: Rorschach's ditto can look like him...so...make of that what you will...

3. Poochyena

In cases where tracking or extreme aggression are called for, Rorschach more than happily utilizes this little dude. Small and convenient, he's also good at getting into tight spaces and looking at things he normally wouldn't think to. Plus his night vision is an added plus. I headcanon that poochyenas jaws lock, and it's bite force is similar to that of a rottweiler: the bigger the skull the harder the bite. And this poochyena...has a biiiig head...just saying.

4. Noctowl

Do I really need to explain this one? He and nite Owl were partners for a long time. I think Daniel caught a hoothoot and gave it to him as a Christmas gift or something. This is the only fully evolved pokemon on Rorschach's team...it's very important to him. Anyway, it also does aerial surveillance and isn't afraid to put enemies to sleep or even knock them out entirely. Don't mess with this noctowl. It will fuck you up. Hands down no question. And if you mess with the noctowl, well, he'll break your fingers...and then some.

5. Marill

Yep, rorschachs got a fairy type, in case he ever has to deal with pesky dragons. Why marill? Because he likes how cute it is,though he'd lie and say he just likes blue (not a lie but a certainly a better reason). Marill is very caring and nurturing, it's very much the emotional and mental support pokemon.

6. Noibat

Okay fine, this one was a biiiit of a biased choice, but I think he'd like this little guy. Noibat is really good at picking up sounds and on cases where quiet is needed, noibat makes a good look out. Rorschach also taught it how to pick open locks. Yep, his noibat could rob you and you'd never know. In fact that's most likely how they met.

So what happened to Rorschach's team after his passing? Well, Daniel and Laurie took it upon themselves to take care of them. Abiding by his wishes, they never allowed them to evolve, the ones that could anyway.

However, oddly enough...his ditto was missing...hm...

was considering audino or chansey for the doc but comfey is also a pokemon associated w/ healing, maybe someone he picked up during oblivia? i'd consider thievul his ace over a standard healing mon, considering the importance of his criminal aspect, but he's probably worked with them before. kept kasa's ditto, think leavany would be a good partner w/ it making clothing + what have you out of leaves. kept hocus' crobat bc i couldn't really think of a good reason to get rid of it + a pokemon that evolves only with high friendship emphasizing how they're not wholly evil + supersonic attack to disorient enemies following with his theme of messing with your mind. zoroark feels like a self explanatory addition. uhhhh not really sure about arley. p confident in conkeldurr (vague architecture/material connection w/ arley being a woodcutter + conkeldurr's line being what it is), but not sure about his other partner... machamp for being the OG big fighting guy, pangoro bc i like how its pokedex entries say though it has a violent temperament and is the type to talk with its fists, it doesn't tolerate bullying and is kindhearted toward its companions - it's a nice charactization that could parallel arley's? (also pancham won't evolve unless another dark type is in the party and that'd be a fun little nod to thievul + zoroark's presence)- and crabominable just bc i saw it on the fighting type list and my mind got stuck on the idea.

Korekiyo : Banette/Mega Banette (I mean... c'mon, it's obvious, they are just look alike.. a bit too much)

Gonta : I think between Mega Heracross, Mega Scizor, or Mega Pinsir (It's obvious Gonta's team will be full bug type pokemon. But I want to give badass Bug Pokemon to this pure boi. Cuz he can be scary and badass in my opinion)

Tenko : Mienshao (her Mienshao is female, her entire team will be female too, yeah you know her characteristics)

Ryoma : Liepard/Alolan Persian (he loves cat, and i think Liepard or Alolan Persian or any cat pokemon suits him)

Keebo : Genesect (Genesect reminds me of Keebo, IDK why)

Angie : Smeargle (They're artists, right?)

Tsumugi : Mimikyu/Ditto (Cosplayers, yea)

Miu : Morpeko??? Idk, maybe any Steel and electric type??? ((I just can't thinking of it)))

SYGNA SUITS

(I can't think any designs and seems like... I won't do it either, but I can imagine the partners)

Maki : It'll be Houndoom or Incineroar. Imagine how badass is Maki with them, If she paired Houndoom, she got mega evolutions. If she paired with Incineroar, she got Z moves. But Maki would be more badass... If she got paired with Giratina. Yes, I know Giratina isn't a dark type but a ghost type pokemon. But Maki and Giratina shares a similarity that is works in underworld, hiding in the shadows, as we know. Maki is an assassin who works in the shadows and underworld as for Giratina is a pokemon who live in Distortion World which it can be said.. it's an underworld from pokemon series.

Kokichi : It would be Zoroark, yeah Zoroark isn't ghost type but a dark type pokemon but you know... Zoroark would be troublesome if he joined Kokichi when he do any pranks. But I think Kokichi would be A LOT troublesome if he got paired with Hoopa, A mischief and troublemaker mythical Pokemon from Gen 6. Hoopa is a psychic/dark type Pokemon who can sends anything and everything to faraway places using its loop, which can warp space. Now, Imagine how much troublesome and overpower this pair will be....

Kaito : Cosmog/Solgaleo/Lunala/Necrozma. ...I think i don't have to explain this one

Tenko : Lopunny, in my opinion Lopunny is look like a feminine pokemon? IDK but.. knowing this, it would be a perfect pair to Tenko if she got any sygna suit in pokemon masters. Ofc, the Lopunny will be female. plus Mega Lopunny is normal/fighting type, making it more perfect pair. Also, Lopunny is very a cautious pokemon and it quickly bounds off when it senses danger. Imagine if this Lopunny's "danger" are males.... Yeah

Shuichi : I think Inteleon would be a good pair for him, I also felt like Sobble to Inteleon are similars with Shuichi's character development. From timid, pessimist to cool character. I know this opinion may be weird but.. That's how i feel. and His Inteleon can gigantamax. Or Metagross would be a good pair too due to Metagross has four brains in total. Combined, the four brains can breeze through difficult calculations faster than a supercomputer. Shuichi and Metagross are smart so they would make a great pair too, Shuichi also would be badass because Metagross can mega evolve too.

Miu : Rotom, I think Rotom will be a great help for Miu's invention due to Its electric-like body can enter some kinds of machines and take control in order to make mischief. Now, what if Rotom takes control of Miu's... "that kind of things" tools and make mischief with it? Yes, a good combination, i think. Also Rotom loves to surprise others, sometimes makes Miu annoyed of it. they would make a funny dynamic.

Tsumugi : Hisuian Zoroark, actually IDK if hisuian already made their appearance on pokemon masters but, I think it would be deathly pair to her, as you know Hisuian Zoroark with its disheveled white fur, it looks like an embodiment of death. Heedless of its own safety, Zoroark attacks its nemeses with a bitter energy so intense, it lacerates Zoroark’s own body. What i mean is.. it's intense bitter energy also can be interpreted as "despair".

Angie : Tapu Koko, Well.. Tapu Koko and Angie shares some similarity, they also can be scary too. I think

Kaede : Meoletta, I think i don't have to explain it.. Oh, Primarina would be great too. Kaede and Primarina will make a scary combo. because To Primarina, every battle is a stage. It takes down its prey with beautiful singing and dancing. It's also known as a songstress, it has a fantastical look on moonlit nights when it leads its colony in song.
