Fic rec time!! How about some Pride and Prejudice?!

This story is just amazing. It’s got Elizabeth/Darcy for sure—that’s the endgame. But Elizabeth has so many adventures to get through before she arrived in Darcy’s arms. Including a marriage to Colonel Fitzwilliam. And Waterloo. And soul marks!

I love this author’s characterization, their attention to detail, their impeccable historical research. The pathos of war, the crunching weight of grief. And the pining. SO MUCH PINING. And the smut!! Yay for smutty Darcy!

I wouldn’t consider this one of my fandoms, which is one of the things that makes it so special. To stumble across such a perfect piece of fanfiction, without having to slog through all of Ao3–it almost seems like cheating. But someone referenced it on Tumblr, and BAM! There it was. Enjoy!

agreed that it’s a bit fast and loose, but dwj is doing so many interesting and complicated things with that book, I always find myself thinking about it for days after I re-read it. I’d agree that it’s my favorite

I also end up thinking about it for ages after I finish it. I’m not sure how many times I’ve read it at this point, but I always find myself wanting to read it again before too long.

I give this an A! One of my all-time favorite relationship tropes to read (and write), and such fodder for delicious angst and slow-burn romance. (I think most of my ships could be characterized by mutual pining to some degree! 😄)

These postcards have been found to increase voter turnout by about 1.3% which is actually A Big F-ing Deal when you consider the margin of victory in swing states.

States getting postcards (drum roll...): Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Wisconsin!

In many of these states, there are bills to protect access to reproductive health AS WELL AS the presidential and Senate elections.

You are sent a list of addresses and three templated messages to choose from. You order as few as 200 postcards and the mail date is in October. They also send you the state themed postcards and there are always a few extras for mistakes and keepsakes. I keep a card from every campaign I write for (assuming I have one) in the same album I keep all my holiday photo cards.

Save democracy! Use your voice! You can include children in this and if you have issues with handwriting and the financial leeway, you can simply donate to the organization. If all you can do is reblog this post, that counts too (and if you're not from the US but you still want to reblog this, thanks!)

10 Fic Recs for Feedback Fest 2024/International Fanworks Day

There are so many amazing fics out there, but here are a few recs in honor of @transformativeworks's Feedback Fest.

But We Don't Have to Talk About It (The Owl House, by @halcyonhue): This is a brand new fic and so, so good. Excellent post-finale Luz & Hunter messiness.

A Potter's Field (The Owl House, by @sercezgazety): I can't make a fic rec list without this fic (I also had the pleasure of beta reading it). Fairly Hunter-centric. Written before WAD, but deals with post-finale politics, lustration, trials, grimwalkers, personhood.

phantom pains (The Owl House, by @crimeronan): RATED E AND MIND THE TAGS — SA! Not an easy topic, so gorgeously, hauntingly written.

get through it (The Owl House, by @polyhexian): Alador-centric. Excellent use of second person.

things we lost in the fire (Nimona graphic novel, by @prodigaldaughteralice): Wonderfully-written Comic!Ambrosius and Meredith Blitzmeyer.

Lunch and Other Obscenities (Star Trek 2009): Uhura & Gaila cross-cultural misunderstandings.

An Ever-Fixed Mark (Jane Austen, by @amarguerite): Augh, this series. Some of the best fic on AO3. Fantastic writing, Soulmate deconstruction, war, grief, politics, AU spin offs.

i'll write you a harmony in C (Jane Austen): Modern Jane Austen AU featuring Mary Bennett and Henry Crawford. I don't even remember when I first stumbled across this fic but I've revisited it multiple times over the years.

Beside me singing in the Wilderness (80 Days): Amazing work that really takes advantage of (and builds upon) the worldbuilding of the game.

have you heard (Star Wars sequel trilogy): Written between movies and no longer canon compliant, but a great fic about the power of stories.

A timeline of going feral about Persuasion

Saturday: Read Persuasion. Deeply enjoy it while also feeling like one has been hit over the head with a club made from the essence of yearning and catharsis. Look up gifs of the movies; decide the 1995 looks most promising, and the 2022 should be doused in holy water and exorcised because how goddamn dare you

Sunday: wake up early specifically to watch Persuasion (1995) while the bf is asleep. Squee to oneself the entire time. Finish the movie, and rabidly descend into the Persuasion tag on Ao3. Read most of the day. Find out the bf is slightly disappointed he wasn't included in the morning movie time; watch the movie again in the evening while trying not to scream because Amazon Video keeps messing up the audio syncing and ruining the experience.

Monday: Continue going through the Ao3 tag. Consider rewatching the movie, but resist due to lack of time. Briefly scold oneself for fixating on the romance and not the fantastic prose and social commentary. Consider buying the Annotated Persuasion to better understand the historical context; instead add it to the Christmas wishlist and keep fixating on the romance

Tuesday: Finish going through the Ao3 tag. Lament the tragic lack of additional fics. Vaguely consider a future Persuasion AU but discard it because there's really not a good immediate parallel in ASOIAF, and because more importantly, Anne/Frederick is the entire point, an AU with different characters wouldn't have them

Wednesday: Discover that the hyper fixation is not calming down, no, it's STILL going. Reread all of @amarguerite’s incredible figure skating AU where Frederick and Anne were once pairs partners, until Coach Russell forced them apart so Frederick could join the NHL. Feel way too many feelings about it.

Thursday: Reread the short side stories of the skating AU. Finally comment because oops, incredible work deserves comments, but the reading binge was so intense that no such deserved comments were given. Pray the fic authors are not bothered by the sudden onslaught of fangirling.

Friday: Decide to reread Persuasion tonight, because now one can really SAVOR it, really just go apeshit over every line and moment. And also because hopefully rereading it will get the brainworms to calm down, Jesus Christ, wtf?!?!?!! Stay tuned for the tag to be flooded with commentary, lol

Hey Lin! Since i've read Betrothed again (third time now) I'm back with my nosy questions! 😅 do you have a list of favourite variations somewhere? If not, would you mind sharing a couple? Hope you're doing well! xx

So I don't have a definitive list. Now I read these variations so much more rarely, but back in the day, when I was on a spree, I could read hundreds of them, and I wish I had made notes!

I think my favourite is Jan Hahn. I loved both The Journey and the Arranged Marriage. I like the stories where there is lots of romantic tension and this delivers in spades!

This was a while back, but I remember Maria Hamilton's Mr. Darcy and the Secret of Becoming a Gentleman being good.

I think Abigail Reynolds was my gateway drug into JAFF, and By Force of Instinct is probably my favourite of her variations. The first half inspired me to write Stranded!

And I know I'm not being wildly original, but I really enjoy the output of @amarguerite which you can read here. Just very clever, witty and well written.

I was rewatching the 1995 Sense and Sensibility and got to the part where Elinor says “after all it is bewitching in the idea of one’s happiness entirely depending on one person - it is not always possible, we must accept” and it made me wish so hard for a soulmate au of Sense and Sensibility, written by yourself. I was like “amarguerite would write the heck out of that!!!” Anyways, love your writing!! ❤️

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea?

I actually did write a TC fic with this title (or very close to it), which was a pirate AU and crossover with Black Sails! But if I hadn't used it for that fic, maybe it would be for a continuation of the pirate AU I was thinking about where Laurie is a Royal Navy officer who gets shipwrecked after a storm or battle at sea and is rescued by the crew of pirate captain Ralph Lanyon, his schoolboy crush and former fencing mentor.

Last Line Challenge

This is a snippet from one of my QuinObi week pieces (me, typing them fighting with tears in my eyes)

Obi-Wan's cheeks burn red. That dark storm that Quin has under control brews wild in his chest. He craves the man in front of him and the light always trailing at his heels.  

“Oh yes,” Obi-Wan seethes with more sarcasm than should fit in anyone’s body, “you sound so very like yourself. Nothing’s wrong at all. I have no idea why I’m here.”  

Despite the harsh words, grief beats in Obi-Wan's Force presence. Quin put that grief there, but there’s nothing, nothing he can do about it now.  

He has to do what he’s doing. To find Sidious, he must. Obi-Wan will understand after it's over. He always does.

“Obi-Wan, go. Leave. Before you get hurt and/or blow my cover. I mean it.”  

“No," Obi-Wan says with a gentle anger that makes Quin want to burst into tears. "I will not go without you. And if you think I--”  

Quinlan closes the small gap between them. He fists his hand into Obi-Wan's shirt and kisses him full on the mouth. Obi-Wan returns the kiss with that sharp-sweet tang that is as familiar to Quin as his own reflection in the mirror. Obi-Wan pulls away. His eyes narrow again in the low light of the ship’s entryway, and he exhales a tender breath.  

And he kisses Quin again.
