q!Phil sees Tallulah’s new look, sees the black hair and the purple outfit. “You remind me of someone,” he says. There’s a faraway look in his eyes, memories from long ago but never forgotten. A beautiful woman in a purple dress and purple hat, and long beautiful black hair.
It’s a particularly bad day, Tallulah had too many close calls, and the voices were getting far too loud.
The first time she sees her is in the void. It’s quiet, deathly quiet, for the first time in days Tallulah experiences silence. A woman approaches, she’s tall, hidden behind her purple hat and a black veil. Here in the cold expanse of the void she can’t help but feel warm, comforted. Tallulah wants to cry, she wants to fall to the floor and let all the pain and suffering she’s been feeling flood the void.
The woman kneels to the floor and takes off her hat. She’s beautiful, just like her papa said. She has the brightest smile, the kindest eyes. Her hair is long and black and a purple dress that imitates the starry night sky. She’s everything, she’s the universe and more.
“I like your hair,” she says. Tallulah’s cheeks heat up at the compliment, and the purple hat and black veil the woman was wearing get placed on her head. “There, I think it looks good on you.” The hat is too big on her, it falls and covers her eyes, the goddess giggles and lifts it up, “it’ll fit one day.”
Tallulah’s hands find themselves on top of the hat, steadying it above her head. Two hands open the veil, they wipe the tear off her cheek.
“Hi gorgeous, do you wanna go on a walk?” She smiles.
Hand in hand they walked across the void. Laughing and talking as stars sparkled in their every step. The universe enveloped them both, the universe smiled and laughed.

Amazing Spider-Man #195 (Wolfman/Pollard, Aug 1979). No confirmation of Black Cat having bad luck powers yet — and enough bad stuff happens to Pete that you could believe it’s just typical Parker luck.

BHOC: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #190
After a few shaky months following the successive departures of both writer Len Wein and artist Ross Andru, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN finally felt like it was back in the groove again. New writer Marv Wolfman had started up a number of running subplots in Peter Parker’s life, making it feel nuanced and textured again, and the sense of the title as an ongoing soap opera about the life of a young super…

Marvel celebrated the Amazing Spider-Man's 200th issue with a double sized instalment with a cover date of January, 1980. Spider-man was able to make good on his past when he helped a security guard who turned out to be the one he didn't help on the fateful night that his Uncle Ben was murdered. Not only did he encounter the guard again, but he was once more put into conflict with the burglar he didn't stop who killed his Uncle. This time an enraged Spider-Man scared him till he died of a heart attack. ("The Spider and the Burglar... A Sequel," Amazing Spider-Man 200#, Marvel Comic Event)

I introduced the idea, and Len’s eyes lit up, and Gerry’s eyes lit up, and Marv’s eyes lit up. We sat there and worked out the logistics of it, and then ran out to find Dick [Giordano, Executive Editor]. And, in another incredible coincidence, we found him coming back from a dinner with his loved ones, dragged him forcibly away, took him up to the roof, told him the idea, and on the spot, he said, ‘Approved! Do it!’ Of course, I don’t want to give the impression that he was threatened by anyone... but we were on the roof...

Amazing Spider-Man #194 (Wolfman/Pollard, July 1979). Hi, Felicia! In her first appearance, Black Cat gets the drop on Spidey. (I was gonna say Black Cat’s got his tongue, but Pete naturally beat me to it.)

BHOC: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #191
Another week brought another raft of new comic books at my regular 7-11’s spinner rack, and I was right there on Thursday as I was every week to pick them up. First book this week was this month’s issue of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, a title that I had been enjoying more and more thanks to the soap operatic work of writer Marv Wolfman and the Steve Ditko-inspired artistry of Keith Pollard. This whole…
