ETERNAL SPOKESMAN FOR THE SUPER-SEVENTIES DOOMED GENERATION.
PIC INFO: Spotlight on pioneering American heavy rock/DOOM metal frontman, Bobby Liebling, vocalist lyricist for heavy metal band, PENTAGRAM, c. early to mid '70s, USA.
"Some people thinkI'm an advocate of Lucifer, And some say I'm a child of God -- yes they do, Some people think I've got the nine lives of a cat, And others say I'm filthy as a dog, So you be forewarned, I'm coming after you, About the time I catch up to you, I'll never, No I'll never, I'll never let you go -- alright!"
-- "Be Forewarned" (1994) by PENTAGRAM

On this day 30 years ago shock rocker Marilyn Manson released his debut album “Portrait Of An American Family”. It would have limited success, however years later Rolling Stone would call it one of the greatest albums in the history of heavy metal.

Friday, September 15: Slayer, "Born of Fire"
R.I.P. Jeff Hanneman (1964-2013)
“Born of Fire” and “Hallowed Point” were the fastest tracks on Seasons in the Abyss, but whereas the latter was more of a synthesis of Reign in Blood and South of Heaven, the former was pure thrash aggression and hellbound posturing.  Such was Slayer’s hot streak at the time that they could put something so unrelentingly frenetic on an album largely given to groove and dynamics and not only pull it off but have it make total sense.  As a track, “Born of Fire” wasn’t necessarily one of the record’s best moments, but it was still distinctly Slayer and therefore prime thrash: Dave Lombardo’s whirling dervish percussion (aided in no small part by another ace Andy Wallace production and mix) both powered the track and told its own story, Tom Araya’s snarl was on point, and Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman riffed and squealed as if they were somehow both committing murders while being murdered themselves.  And right before the title track closed Seasons in the Abyss and Slayer’s golden era in turn, “Born of Fire” was another stirring reminder that absolutely nothing else in the world sounded like Slayer in full freakout mode.
