Doctor who is literally just a story about grief. About the stages beyond the normal five. About hope and reaching and living hard and fast and passionately bc we're all going to die. About outlasting those you love most and being forced to keep on living. About celebrating the dead and the dying bc they were once alive and will forever be alive in your memories. About learning how to move on despite knowing some part of you never will. About running as fast as you can while clinging to the small bits of love and happiness you can scrape for yourself along the way. About outliving and outlasting everyone and everything you've ever put you faith in until all you have left is the faith itself. About always being dead and alive at once, carrying everyone you've ever lost and every version of yourself you've ever been on your shoulders bc you are too kind and too selfish and too full of grief to do anything else.

Doctor who is about grief. It is about life and death and hope and fear and ecstasy and bravery and melancholy and the constant balance between optimism and weight that living brings.

Doctor who is about grief. It is about how life is only precious bc everything has its time, and everything ends.

Me, to my new date: doctor who thinks it's a sci-fi story because the Doctor thinks it's a sci-fi story and because the companions think it's a sci-fi story, but it's really just a story about ghosts. a story about an ancient creature carrying the ghosts of everyone they have ever loved, meeting new people, and seeing them only as future ghosts. they are haunted by the future and the past and the present because they are the only constant in a world constantly in flux, and they are running as fast as they can to things before they burn and fade to dust but everything will always end, you understand, because this is the only thing the Doctor understands and yet they keep going. they love too much to stop. doctor who is not science-fiction, it's horror and optimism and spiritual more than anything else, it's religious unto itself, the TARDIS is a haunted house and a church and a graveyard and a hospital and the Doctor is the most haunted being in the universe but more than anything, this is a love story, because how can you love something without being haunted by it- hey, what are you doing?

pic 3 is from page 149 when Jerry told Jack about the Russian radio and asked him for help to go through some recorded tapes and figure out who has been targeted and who has been replaced

pic 4 is on page 170 and is a phone call between O'Brien and Jack like a few hours before Jack is attacked by (mimic) Old Aggie

pic 5 is from page 172 when Rosa came to check out Jack's new prosthetic leg (also right before the Old Aggie attack)

pic 6 is from page 198 when Jack and Rosa went to look for Jerry at the old Mathmetist compound and Rosa found out about Jack's injuries from said Old Aggie attack. Also love love how ready Rosa was to kick some ass for Jack

pic 7 is on page 213 when O'Brien came to the gas station for Jerry's birthday party (which of course ended horribly)

pic 8 is on page 228 when the (first) Benjamin came to the gas station and before Jack realized Benjamin was actually a mimic. Also like one of the few instances that Jack initiated physical contact

pic 9 is from page 306 and when Jerry came back after Jack had spent so long thinking he was dead and decapitated. Want to point out that at this point Jack wasn't sure if Jerry was a mimic or not but he didn't care, he was just happy to have his buddy back :(

and lastly pic 10 is after the whole thing that happened when Jack stabbed himself to let the shapeshifter's/the guardian's consciousness transfer into his body. Basically Jack waking up to find Jerry had painted his nails

The thing to me about the Doctor's companions is that they are, at their very cores, ordinary. And that's not an insult. They are human, flawed and messy and chaotic and petty and obsessive and clingy and kind and mortal and ordinary. And yet the Doctor chooses them again and again. Every Doctor is given a moment where they could choose to leave them behind. To keep moving. To go find someone else. To let them be ordinary. And yet the Doctor chooses the companion, sees some extraordinary in all of these ordinary people, because seven billion people and counting and the Doctor's never met someone like them.
