Sunny War Album Review: Anarchist Gospel
Tumblr media
(New West)
BY JORDAN MAINZER
A breakup. The death of her father. A decaying Earth. Uprooting and moving to her childhood city. On Anarchist Gospel, Sunny War looks change in the face--some unexpected, some sudden, some gradual--and transforms chaos into her best album yet. The singer-songwriter and blues guitar fingerpicker has long channeled struggles, from personal bouts with substance abuse and addiction, to the overall fight against institutional racism and police brutality, into genre-averse songs of pain and triumph. The all-encompassing Anarchist Gospel expounds on this ethos, along with a cast of collaborators including producer Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Hurray For The Riff Raff), Americana wunderkind Allison Russell, Gillian Welch creative partner David Rawlings, and My Morning Jacket's Jim James. Still, Sunny shines above all.
Take opener "Love's Death Bed", featuring backing vocals from Russell and Chris Pierce's shimmering harmonica, atop clacking drums and banjo. Sunny, who leads a chorus in a call and response, centers the song's dead-eyed stare into the soul of an ex. "Your mouth is a gun / Got bodies dropping every time you speak," she sings, making our jaws drop from the get-go. On "No Reason", a song built around Sunny's incredible desert blues riff and Jack Lawrence's steady bass, she clarifies that even though her ex might not mean to hurt her, it doesn't matter: "Good intentions that you keep / Don't change the fact that you're a beast." Sunny explores intentionality of destruction throughout the album, both in interpersonal relationships and via the environment, asking us to empathize and reflect on the space we take up. On "Shelter And Storm", she sings from the point of view of Earth itself, albeit one that has managed to survive apocalypse, repeatedly and jubilantly declaring, "The humans are away!" Yet, on "Earth", her tone is mournful and more realistic. A stunning combination of blues and jazz, bolstered by the vocal support of James, Maureen Murphy, Nickie Conley, and Kyshona Armstrong, as well as past collaborator Micah Nelson's slinky 12-string, the song reminds us that the end of the world is closer than we think, tangible if you bother to look around.
At the same time, Sunny battles self-destruction throughout Anarchist Gospel; in the lead-up to its release, she spoke about her music representing a battle between that side of herself and the one trying to make things better. On "New Day", she uses the language of addiction to wax on love, hurt, and obsession: "Believing in magic can be tragic / I'm love's junkie, I'm love's addict." One of the record's true standouts is "I Got No Fight", where pained guitars and screaming organs exemplify Sunny's desire for the days to end, depression that buzzes like a fly in her ear. On the gorgeous country tune "His Love", she sings of an unhealthy relationship, "His love fades, my love grows," and the timbres of her voice and the instruments similarly diverge, her lurking deep vocal register contrasting the spryness of the backing vocals, guitars, and pattering drums.
If Anarchist Gospel is anything, it's honest, an album that both bares its teeth and cowers, that sometimes turns inward in the face of trouble but eventually overcomes with boisterous community. On the Crass-quoting, blues stomp clap jaunt of a closer "Whole", Sunny War sings, "Today could be the last, you know / Happy's how you ought to go." Fully knowing it's easier said than done, and for some folks, impossible, Sunny nonetheless dares to dream to everyone.

Sunny War – New Day (live for The Current)
Los Angeles-based folk-punk musician Sunny War — born Sydney Lyndella Ward — is known for her virtuosic guitar playing accompanied by deeply honest lyrics reflecting 21st century concerns. From playing in smaller Americana scenes to being on multiple late-night shows in the past year, Ward’s journey in music has been nothing less than fruitful. Her latest album, "Anarchist Gospel," explores resiliency and deep reflection, as it’s wrapped up in a bow of lush harmonic music with strong roots in Americana and folk. Sunny War stopped by The Current studio to share some songs from her newest album — including this performance of "New Day."

Thinking about Zaheer from Korra, about how the show tried to make it seem like he had some kinda point...when he very much did not. And the closer you look the less sense he makes. He took the words of a philosopher from a culture he was not a part of, hundreds of years removed from their cultural and historical context. Somehow he got it into his big shiny bald head that the freaking Air Nomads, a society of pacifists, would somehow approve of him going around just killing people left and right. But you know what really gets me? He qoutes...one guy. One. He fixates on the words of a single monk, from a culture filled with monks, and decided only his words mattered. The Air Nomads were famously focused on philosophy, there must have been hundreds of different books written by just as many contemporary monks calling Guru Laghima a cynical misanthrope who's lost all connection to the world around him and as such shouldn't have a say. One man cannot define his entire culture, but it ain't Zaheer's culture so why would he give a damn. And that really irks me because I was raised Jewish, and one of the first things I was ever taught was to never take one person's word as gospel. There are as many ways to understand the Torah as there have been people who have read the thing. Not one person, Rabbi or student or prophet, can speak the whole truth of the world. Truth is communal, it is a thing built out of the words of thousands people arguing back and forth until they reach it. The world is too big to be defined by one person's truth, and the fact Zaheer thought it could just paints him as an idiotic anarchist, and that's not the kind of villain that holds a season together if you ask me.

Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk's Possible Astrology Placements
Hi! This has been in my drafts ever since I watched ASTV, so here's what I think Hobie Brown's big 6 are :
Tumblr media
- Aquarius sun :
I think this is probably the most non-brainer of all his placements. Hobie is a punk anarchist who hates authority, structure, and consistency. He helped Miles, who was antagonized by everyone at Spider-Society and believed in him against all odds. he will not praise structure for merely existing especially if said structure thrives on sacrificing the minority for the benefit of the majority: you can't get any more aquarian than that 🤷‍♀️.
(I also think his constant clash with Miguel comes from the fact Miguel is a Scorpio with probably several other Scorpio placements squaring Hobie's.)
Tumblr media
- Sagittarius moon :
He has firm convictions (sag is the philosopher, the guru) fueled by his sun sign's drive for equality sans authority. He's also very influential and has a massive following of people who take his words as gospel without him even trying. Nevertheless, he doesn't take himself too seriously and knows how to joke around and not be too uptight. Having a Sagittarius moon could also be why he loves to keep everyone on their toes since Sagittarius despises stagnancy and predictability.
Tumblr media
gif cr. : happy-xy
- Aquarius mercury :
his inventive and crafty nature, his wittiness and slightly-too-frank humor, his understanding of deeply complicated subjects like societal structures and political power, not to forget how he was the first one to predict the downfall of Spider-Society and begin planning for it... His intelligence, inventive nature, and almost prophetic sense of futuristic vision all point to having an Aquarius mercury.
Tumblr media
gif cr. : cost.
- Aries venus :
Hobie loves spikes, piercings, and tattoos, all things sharp and edgy ruled by Mars. He's also not afraid to express his affection and liking for people he just met (like with Miles, he immediately coddled him as if they were long-term best friends). The unabashed way he expresses himself on top of being rebellious and rooting for the underdogs to speak up (showing Miles how to break from Miguel's shield) are very Aries Venus actions.
Tumblr media
- Aquarius mars :
Having a Saturn-ruled Mars explains why he was able to plan ahead for the upcoming divide of the Spider Society, likewise how he managed to remain cool-headed through all the conflict between Miguel and Miles (Saturn is a cold and calculating planet); He was able to predict the clashes to happen because he can recognize patterns early: that's his Aquarius mars conjunct mercury in action.
Tumblr media
- Aries rising :
I think this one was the hardest one to pin down... Hobie was described as tall and lean, with a prominent bone structure (Saturn influence), and his spider suit was designed with spikes all over. He was born in an autocratic society and overthrew -then killed- the despot of his universe... This has a lot of Martian themes like rebellion, leadership, fearlessness, standing up for the weak... But his ability to persevere under such circumstances, plan out things far ahead, and remain coolheaded is definitely due to his Aquarius Mars being his chart ruler.
This would be it! let me know what you think of these specific placements, and if you'd like me to do a similar run-down of a character you like just send me an ask <3 have a good day!!

Wolven Daughter - Gospel of the Claw (full album, 2024)
Tumblr media
youtube
Lately here at the network we’ve been on quite an exploratory journey with music. We’ve been going all over the place all for the sake of the “blackened” moniker. We have had, of course, some bands a little more blackened than others if not more so black metal. Well today we get back to our roots in a strong figurative sense and perhaps even a bit of a literal sense. Earlier this month the ever so wonderful and amazing one woman, DIY anarchist band Wolven Daughter released her very first, and arguably much highly anticipated, full length, Gospel of the Claw. Wolven Daughter here are very careful about falling into the natural trappings of black metal though. We still get our classic vocals and the cold, harsh instruments being recorded possibly in the worst conditions possible but Wolven Daughter kinda tweaks this a bit. While perhaps the early bands of yore talked mightly of their influences, perhaps even not, Wolven Daughter wears them as badges to make their own sound. Within these songs you’ll be going all over from the days of Hellhammer and Bathory to the 90’s and maybe even more modern day bands like Khold. From the first notes of the aptly titled, A Wolf Age (intro), Wolven Daughter grabs you with her sharp albeit cold fangs much like a death hound sent for your soul. From this point on she has you and there is no escape which is the point of Gospel of the Claw. Its harshness mixed with melody create this wonderful atmosphere that demands your attention every time you turn it on. You’ll be hearing with each new listen something different. And finally we think Wolven Daughter is doing something important that alongside the likes of Karnstein are doing with vampires, queering back werewolves. Perhaps it’s not entirely the intention but from the cover to the title of the album and the songs within, Gospel of the Claw is nothing short of queer ass werewolves and we love it. It serves as an important reminder that these beings aren’t for anyone else to take and muck up and that they can be taken back and used for such wonderful imagery.

Sunday Sermon 2: On Laws
Happy Sunday to all again. I am once again writing to you as Pope Orion Orangutan Omnibenevolence Kosmos Yes or POOKY.
So, the last sermon I delivered might have seemed to offer instruction, advice, or command in regards to chilling and maybe being nice. That was not my intent. It was at most, a suggestion. I am not an Enlightened One. I'm not more in touch with the Divine than anyone else.
While I'm writing these, I do invoke my Discordian Pope title. That does not make me an authority. I took the expensive route to Discordian Papacy: I bought a ten dollar used copy of the Steve Jackson Games printing of the Principia Discordia and then made a fifteen cent photocopy at FedEx Kinkos of the page with the Be Your Own Pope card. That does not elevate me above anyone else. All who decide to join the Golden Apple Corps of Eris are equally in the Discordian Papacy.
I'll own up to a thing: back when I was in late high school or my year of college, I came to identify with the label of anarchism or libertarianism coming to it from left-leaning reasons. For instance, at that time, gay marriage was a controversial issue and not yet legal across the United States of America, and I had a simple stupid solution: marriage is no longer a legal status for anyone straight or gay, the government just doesn't do marriage anymore. Marriage equality achieved.
Anyway, as a budding anarchist, attempting to have a consistent moral philosophy of life, I started thinking about Christianity, particularly the church my parents had been raising me in. If top down authority and distinctions of station are evils when talking about the world of human politics, are they any less so when applied to religion? Long story short, maybe God exists, but he's a tyrant and All Clergy Are Bastards.
Today's reading is from The Gospel of Mary Magdalene I'm drawing my wording from The Essential Gnostic Gospels translated by Alan Jacobs published by Watkins 2009:
Then Jesus greeted them saying, “Peace be with you all.
Take my peace into your Selves; be watchful so nobody leads
you astray claiming “Look there, look here for the son of man.”
I tell you that the son of man is within you all!
Seek him inside; those who search diligently
and earnestly shall surely find him.
Then leave and preach the truth of the Kingdom
to those with ears to hear;
don't invent rules beyond those I've given.
Don't make laws like law-makers do
or else you'll be held back.”
After he had said this he left.
[I'm skipping a bit to get to the next part I want to quote]
Mary answered, “What's concealed from you I'll tell;
I saw him in a vision and I told him.
He said, “Blessed are you that your strength
wasn't shaken by my appearance,
for where the heart is lies buried treasure.”
[another skip still Mary talking]
When my soul had conquered ignorance it rose up
and saw the fourth power, which assumes seven forms.
The first is darkness, the second desire, then ignorance,
fear of death, power of the flesh, foolish reason,
and self-righteous pedantry.
These are the powers of anger and doubt; they ask,
“From where did you come, killer of men;
where are you heading, slayer of space?”
My soul replied, “What bound me is dead,
what enveloped me has been vanquished;
my desires are over and ignorance is no more.
In this life I was freed from the world
and the chains of forgetfulness.
From now on I will rest in the eternal now;
for this age, this aeon, and in stillness.”
So today's lesson from POOKY is: Yeshua and Miriam also say no laws, free yourself from ignorance and pedantry.
Good Day of the Sun unto you all.

Can you explain more about Christian anarchy?
Would love to! I'll pull it straight from the Christian Anarchism Wikipedia Article:
"Christian Anarchism is a Christian movement in political theology that claims anarchism is inherent in Christianity and the Gospels. It is grounded in the belief that there is only one source of authority to which Christians are ultimately answerable—the authority of God as embodied in the teachings of Jesus. It therefore rejects the idea that human governments have ultimate authority over human societies. Christian anarchists denounce the state, believing it is violent, deceitful and idolatrous. Christian anarchists hold that the "Kingdom of God" is the proper expression of the relationship between God and humanity. Under the "Kingdom of God", human relationships would be characterized by horizontal organization, servant leadership, and universal compassion—not through the traditional structures of organized religion, which most Christian anarchists consider hierarchical and/or authoritarian structures. Most Christian anarchists are also pacifists who reject war, militarism, and the use of violence."
Here's the link if you want more information!
There's tons of evidence in the Bible that Jesus/God was/is a pacifistic anarchist... Could go on about it for hours.

did a lil tag thingy yesterday: tag a writer if you’d like them to share a never-before-seen playlist/moodboard/bit of background lore from one of their fics
and @drgrlfriend requested some background on A Muscle The Size Of Your Fist! I am very very happy to oblige, I could talk about that fic for days.
the songs I had on repeat while writing this (but didn’t include in the in-story playlists because they were anachronistic) were “Your Heart Is A Muscle The Size Of Your Fist” aka the title track, by Ramshackle Glory; “I Was A Teenage Anarchist” by Against Me!; and “Normal” by the Homeless Gospel Choir.
Bucky eventually gets a biomech-style partial sleeve tattoo of the Winter Soldier arm, which Steve designs to incorporate his scars. (for anybody who hasn’t read the fic: in it, Captain America & the Winter Soldier is a comic book that Steve and Bucky have been writing/drawing together since they were kids. Cap’s story is an allegory for Steve’s coming out as transgender, and the fall/brainwashing/metal arm is Bucky’s way of writing about his depression/suicide attempt.)
Frank’s story is that he was the original singer of a legendary punk band - think Henry Rollins/Black Flag - until Russo screwed him over and kicked him out. he is in fact dating both Matt and Karen.
the first time I talked about this fic “out loud” was with @noxnthea in November 2021, a full year before I posted it, but before that, I was fiddling with the basic idea of “new kid in town processes anger issues through punk” as a Sam Winchester gen ficlet; it didn’t really work in that form, so I shelved it. then I went through like three different overall setups, starting with everybody being in high school, before it took its final shape.
the relationship between Clint and Steve was by far the hardest part of the fic for me to write.
there is the start of a deleted scene somewhere in which Steve makes Clint his very own battle vest as a belated birthday present. it’s purple. I should go find that scene and finish it.
thanks for playing along!
[if anybody else is curious: I am always open to questions, headcanon requests, etc about any of my fics. ask away.]

There's a lot more reading I need to do on the topic so don't take my perspective on this as gospel BUT the like. the thing about the "anarchist insulin debate", for lack of a better term, that always sticks out to me is how people seem to think that either a) all the existing infrastructure that is used to produce insulin/antipsychotics/whatever the hell AND all the people who know how to produce these things will just go poof and disappear after The Revolution (which isn't even a concept most anarchists think will actually be realized any time soon, mind you) and/or b) all the existing people who know how to produce insulin/antipsychotics/whatever the hell would never want to produce these things if they're not basically being forced to and that the only way anything will ever be produced ever is through privatized industry or The State, and it's a combination of these ideas that results in "there will literally be no insulin ever after The Revolution (which isn't even a concept most anar-) and all anarchists ever want every single disabled person to DIE" and "anarchists think they can just produce insulin in dirty bathrooms and don't even know the conditions necessary to produce it, something something cardboard wheelchair ramp metaphor, and all anarchists ever want every single disabled person to DIE", neither of which are an accurate representation of like literally anything I've ever seen an anarchist on here say

G-d's Will
I ain't gonna just sit here and take that bad things happening to poor folks after years of destruction of our bodies is the will of any divine being. When my father lost his sisters in a tragedy brought on by faulty wiring, it wasn't His will. It was a platitude, pure and simple. Electrical fires aren't mysterious ways, it was a tragedy. Illness and poverty aren't willful things.
In America, linking Christianity to Capitalism and prosperity gospel was an intentional campaign. Remember what they did to it, and if you never learned it because it was intentionally obfuscated, let me help you learn. Spiritual Mobilization - The Failure of an Ultraconservative Ideal in the 1950s https://sci-hubtw.hkvisa.net/https://www.jstor.org/stable/40488759 If you want to read more about liberation theology and Christian anarchists, below is a group with a free library. Jesus Radicals https://www.jesusradicals.com/about.html I understand that religious trauma is alive and awfully well, so I will be tagging this and appreciate if any reblogs maintain tags regarding the content.

Today’s compilation:
Devouring Our Roots: San Francisco's New-Folk Uprising 1989 Folk / Alternative Folk / Country-Folk / Folk-Rock
Here's a neat and brief snapshot of San Francisco's folk revival scene of the late 80s that was made to benefit Food Not Bombs, a loose-knit group of collectives nationwide who believe that the US spends far too much on building bombs and not nearly enough on providing food and shelter to its own people. So, in order to redress this unconscionable and interminable issue, Food Not Bombs works to provide food to homeless people by direct means—an act that their volunteers have been arrested for on numerous occasions—and also provides food for protests that align with their own anarchistic worldview.
So, by my estimation, this was a good album for a good cause. It's oddly bookended by two separate, uncredited jammy and silly takes on Sonny & Cher's "The Beat Goes On," but it fits a nice variety of lighthearted folkiness within, from the uniquely Celtic folk-reggae-dubbish hybrid of The Bedlam Lovers' "Star of the County Down," to the beautiful tongue-in-cheek country-gospel-folk of The Terminators of Endearment's "With God As My Waitress" that reminds you to be kind and courteous to your server and to tip them well 😊.
But nothing tops the straightahead country-folk of The Wannabe Texans' "I Cut Myself" that features a nice and thick foundation of fiddle and both acoustic and electric guitar strums for Mary O'Neil's dour and striking vocals. Definitely my favorite song on here.
I didn't even really know that this San Francisco folk revival scene ever existed. I mean, it's safe to assume that every big city has at least a handful of folk bands always kicking around, I guess, but it's not something you really think about until you actually come to discover it, you know?
A few pretty sweet gems on here.
Highlights:
The Bedlam Rovers - "Star of the County Down" The Wannabe Texans - "I Cut Myself" The Terminators of Endearment - "With God as My Waitress"

The Apostasy Candles Thursday, May 2, 2024 End Time Love II Thessalonians speaks of a great falling away. The Greek word is apostasia from which we get the word apostasy. Stasia means state of, and apo means away from. Looking around the world, we see apostasy everywhere, even in some churches. We're witnessing an unprecedented social, moral, cultural, and ethical upheaval, but Messiah didn't die to save culture or society. He died to save people, and the Gospel's as strong as ever- even stronger now in an anti-God culture verses a culture that professed to be a follower of Yeshua. A candle burns brightest at night. When the apostles foretold the apostasy, faith in Messiah was the belief of relatively few people. Most of the world was pagan. In order to have apostasy from the faith, it would have to spread to all the world. This was only possible in the 19th and 20th century when Judeo-Christian morality became universal. So, be encouraged. The apostasy you see in the world is only more proof that God's on the throne and you've got the light. Be strong and remember, it's not by day but by night that a candle burns its brightest.
Today's Mission Practice being a candle in the night- shine against the darkness, bear a contrary light, and be a night light of the Lord.
2 Thessalonians 2:1-3 2 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, 2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
The Anarchist Now, friends, read these next words carefully. Slow down and don’t go jumping to conclusions regarding the day when our Master, Jesus Christ, will come back and we assemble to welcome him. Don’t let anyone shake you up or get you excited over some breathless report or rumored letter from me that the day of the Master’s arrival has come and gone. Don’t fall for any line like that.
Before that day comes, a couple of things have to happen. First, the Apostasy. Second, the debut of the Anarchist, a partner in crime with Satan. He’ll defy and then take over every so-called god or altar. Having cleared away the opposition, he’ll then set himself up in God’s Temple as “God Almighty.” Don’t you remember me going over all this in detail when I was with you? Are your memories that short?
HAVE A BLESSED DAY AND WEEKEND!!
