“What were miracles, but science that man didn’t yet understand? And didn’t that make it all the more miraculous that the secrets of the universe were out there, codes one might decipher if smart enough, tenacious enough?”

Book Review: Immortality: A Love Story (The Anatomy Duology #2) by Dana Schwartz
Tumblr media
While Anatomy: A Love Story had gothic undertones, this sequel leaned more heavily into dark academia and alchemy, which, though different, felt fitting considering where readers last left Hazel Sinnett.
The story starts right where book one ends, with Jack gone, no inkling at all as to whether he's dead or alive, and with Hazel back to treating patients as Hawthornden Castle. She's still intent on her work, which includes writing a treatise on diseases and becoming a surgeon, but all that is thrown into jeopardy when she's arrested after saving the life of a female patient. Intervention comes in the form of a summons: from the monarchy.
As it happens, not only has Hazel been requested to tend to the sickly Princess Charlotte, daughter of King George IV, as her personal physician in England, but she finds herself questioning the efficacy of Beecham's immortality vial and bumping elbows with an attractive Swedish doctor as well as with members of a secret society. It's all hands on deck as she wades through the British court, new romantic entanglements, and tricky medical diagnoses.
Overall, an enjoyable read. I liked striving alongside Hazel as she continued her pursuit of medicine and scientific knowledge, especially since she was breaking the mold for the time period. That was my favorite part. The Companions of the Death subplot was intriguing if a bit contrived. Simon was a great addition though, and I found myself championing him and Hazel more than Hazel and Jack. The latter was brought back into the narrative too late, in my opinion, and his influence/impact felt lacking in many ways, which simply could be a matter of personal taste, I don't know. Their love wasn't convincing or nuanced enough for me.
Other than that, I appreciated how Hazel's love and dedication to medicine, to helping people, was immortalized in this. She's a doctor, through and through, and that's something I love to see.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC in exchange for my review!

Anatomy: A Love Story Book Review
Tumblr media
Spoilers below
Anatomy: A Love Story by Dana Schwartz My rating: 5 of 5 stars "You're going to become a brilliant physician. You're going to help so many people and change so many lives. You're going to light the world on fire, and you can't do that from the shadows. You can't create medicines and cures on the run. None of our greatest minds had to toil for their day's meals before their studying. No, Hazel. No. I can't do that to you."
This book was a complete and utter masterpiece of fiction. Before I picked this up during my 24 hour reading challenge, I'd had this sitting on my TBR cart basically since it came out. I had purchased it when I was out getting birthday gifts for my best friend, then never really thought about it again. I guess the one good thing to come out of that is that I don't have to wait "as long" for the sequel! Anyway, this was so spectacular! Set in Scotland, very gothic, very dark academia, discussing how wealth isn't always everything if you're a woman in the 1800s, sexism, the expectations of women, and evil, evil men. Of course it was clear from pretty much the beginning that Jack was the love interest in the story. And since I knew this, I didn't mind it at all, and in fact I loved their banter. What surprised me was how quickly I grew attached to Jack in particular, and how I was quite literally shouting during that scene. You know what scene I'm talking about. The atmosphere was amazing, and somehow I managed to have an appetite while reading, despite hating eye gore - I managed to eat through that particular scene as well, and the only other book I've been able to do that with that had eye gore was Six of Crows. This was so detailed and brilliantly paced and put together, and while I do wish there was more discussion about the dead brother and more drama with the mom - I understand that what Hazel was doing was a large part caused by the death of her brother, and if her mother hadn't left town then really, the book couldn't have continued. Also, may I just add how gorgeous this book is? Like come on ! Anyway, time to painfully wait for either the publisher to respond and tell me an ARC is on its way or to wait for it to come out to the public… I'm counting down the days.

I am so glad I finished this duology but at the same time I wish I spent more time in this story. I want more. This book makes me want to pick The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy.
Hazel is now a surgeon/physician and she is helping those who need it. She ends up finding herself in London helping out the Princess who has fallen I’ll and won’t see any physicians.
I was surprised to find that Lord Byron was apart of this novel- but I do like that it featured his secret society. This book certainly encompassed a huge part of gothic novels that I loved and that is the over all sense of longing and yearning. Hazel is non- stop thinking of Jack, and I lived for it. This was a nice wrap up to the story and I am so glad I have the hardcovers to re-read.

Hi hello I’m reading Anatomy: A Love Story by Dana Schwartz and I’m in shambles after Jack called Hazel “love”. Not even done with the book but I’m preparing myself for heartbreak because I know they can’t be together, stupid high society

Consuming media in small bites rather than gulping it all down at once is great. It allows you to properly digest all the story beats and explore the nooks and crannies of every detail.
In the case of mystery detective-like stories, it also gives you a chance to connect the dots yourself. Which is awesome, except for when I was reading Anatomy: A Love Story, and screamed, outloud, in the middle of taking a shower, "they stole her vagina".
My boyfriend has become a befuddled witness of this event.
