17. What do you do when writing becomes difficult? (maybe a lack of inspiration or writers block)

Sort of depends why? Sometimes I have to just admit that the spoons are just not available (which is what happened last night and is happening again tonight), brain and body have just done too much for right now. Leg Broke, is the right now, but I've had that before, too.

Sometimes I need to think out loud to someone, if what I'm stuck on is "what should happen?" in a story I'm working on. Rubber ducking is such a helpful term that's jumped over from programming; if I can talk through what's not working or what I want to happen and can't figure out, then I can either solve it myself, or one of my smart thoughtful friends will have an idea. (the number of times I've rambled on and then gotten "ok, pitch" from @emi--rose...)

I feel like "going for a walk" is sort of the solitary version of that, which is partially about physical activity being good for the brain and partially about thinking time; same with taking a shower.

Sometimes I just need the peer pressure and time pressure of sitting down for writing sprints. If you know pomodoro method, it's kind of similar; most of the discord servers I'm in have a sprint bot that will set a timer, keep track of word counts, do leaderboards, etc. When I have some idea but the executives are not quite lined up, sometimes it's simply a matter of putting the damn fingers on the keyboard. (This goes well with "freewriting", where if I'm sort of stuck I will just write whatever garbage until it kicks loose into the actual writing. Also recommended: yelling out loud MAKE BAD ART while writing words that are not quite there.)

And then, finally, like low spoons, acknowledging that sometimes it's just not happening, and giving grace to rebuild the creative energy. Do some other creative activity, read or watch something, edit someone else's work, etc etc etc. Trust that it'll come back given a little space.

31. Do you start with the characters or the plot when writing?

Yes? No? A secret third thing? Character, I think, mostly, because I feel like that drives the plot. What I actually start with, though, is almost always a snippet of narration or dialogue. I can have lots of ideas, but I need an entry point.

56. What’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on?

This is not a general thing about my writing, but it is possibly my greatest achievement as a writer to date, so I kinda have to: that I wrote 62k with a protagonist who never gets named (and in close third person TAKE THAT DAPHNE DU MAURIER) (I guess technically, oh god, almost 100k????? with the other two after that. jfc.)

There’s something horrifyingly beautiful about Tess’s final moments. In the midst of the most dire chaos, as she waits for her death to come rushing past so she can blow it sky high and give cordyceps a big fuck you one last time, one of the infected stops. It looks at her, really looks. Her own mortality is personified in this infected. It’s death that’s looking at her, and it sees her. She looks her own death in the eye, and the suspense is so high as it approaches. But then, it doesn’t bite her throat out like we all expect it to.

It kisses her. What’s more, it kisses her gently. And I think it was a brilliant choice on the writers part, because it reminded me that the infected aren’t supposed to be evil. Sure, they’re scary as hell, but really, they’re just trying to survive. They’re connected to one another, they can feel each other from miles away. They seek out and want to be close to their own kind, just like the human survivors do. And when they do find each other, they kiss hello.

And after so long apart from a loved one, someone you know and trust with every instinct in your body, wouldn’t you want to kiss them too?

One thing I wish I'd see more of among Ratio fans is some thought about how he views himself as a teacher.

Like yes, of course he refuses to compromise on the quality and rigor of the education he imparts, and he would find it unforgivably unethical to lower his standards in order to pass more students who had not genuinely learned the material. This is core to his character.

However, as someone who is a teacher IRL, I know the absolutely miserable feeling setting that kind of standard can cause. There's the obvious disheartening sense of disappointment ("Are students these days really not capable of doing the work correctly? Is our future in danger, if this is the highest level of understanding our current generation of students can achieve?"), but even worse than that is the self-doubt.

"Is this somehow my fault? Am I not teaching this material in the right ways for the students to learn? Is there something I could have done differently to get through to these students? Would a better teacher have a higher passing rate?"

We know that Ratio does (or at least did) struggle with feeling inferior to the Genius Society, so I think it is also likely, as much as he absolutely will not budge on his academic standards, that he has doubts about his teaching ability as well.

This is the man who wants to educate the entire world to cure the disease of ignorance, and yet only 3% of his actual students are able to get there. How can someone who gets so few of his direct students to a state of enlightenment hope to enlighten the whole universe? If so few students are successfully learning the material of a given class, doesn't that mean the teacher is doing something wrong?Would a better teacher--would a genius, maybe--not be able to impart their knowledge more efficiently and educate even the most challenging of students?

As someone constantly struggling with that balance between keeping academic standards high while also meeting the needs of today's students, I think the passing rates of his courses must affect Dr. Ratio much more deeply than I've seen fans discuss. I think he would question himself harshly over his class success rates, and I think he must be constantly trying to push himself to become the best teacher he possibly can be.

tl;dr: I hope one day the HSR fandom will stop sleeping on the fact that Ratio is an actual practicing professor who probably has astronomical levels of teacher angst. 😂

we don’t acknowledge enough how dee used to be a pageant winner when she was a kid and how much damage it did to her. she worked her ass off and got recognition for being pretty and talented at a young age and it was the only source of self esteem she could garner in a family that constantly berated and talked down to her. she sought after that external approval because it was the only way she could prove everyone around her wrong. her dream of being a performer didn’t come from a self-aggrandizing delusion— she genuinely showed a lot of potential when she was younger. but she went through an unflattering puberty and her spinal condition got worse and that natural talent she had as a kid plateaued way too early. the “former gifted kid” dilemma. she slowly lost the thing that promised her that she was good, but she was so desperate to keep holding onto it that she tried anyway. again and again and again no matter how much people made fun of her because it was always about proving them wrong. but after a while she couldn’t jump anymore without anticipating the way it feels when she hits the ground face first. self-sabotage became her way out, choosing to rather live in the fantasy of her own unrealized potential and blaming those around her for her lack of success, than having tried and crashed again. she’d rather buy lottery tickets over and over and never scratch off the numbers than to see that she lost. that self-sabotaging behavior bled into other aspects of her life too, from friendships to relationships to therapy. her own short lived success is what made her grow into embodying the cycle of failure.

Shockingly underrated thing about Leo is that he’s legitimately charming when he wants to be?

He’s the Faceman! He’s persuasive! That’s not just some random title he gave himself with no backing to it. People will listen to him. Even if they think he’s being annoying or if they’re upset at him, people listen to him anyway! There’s a reason his bros push him out front to talk to people, and when this happens, that talking nearly always works.

Moreover, Leo knows people. He looks at them and takes into account how they act and what they’re like as he makes his way through the conversations. It’s easy to forget this aspect of Leo’s character because he only brings it out when he really needs (read: wants) to, but it really is a notable part of him that always love to see.

And I say charm in particular because he has a knack for not only getting people to pay attention, but for getting people to stay and listen to what he has to say.
