very telling that, assuming the story is mike’s and we’re viewing it from his eyes (we are), we get to see a lot of will’s personal life and intimate moments whereas we see a lot of el being the hero and her journey with her powers/the supernatural and the Only time we delve into el’s personal life is when we aren’t watching through mike’s eyes despite will and el having equal importance. Incredibly telling that mike’s abandonment of will coincides with his loss of screen time and mike’s world fills up with el’s story but we’re returning to a will centric story as they finally return to each other. or something like that

@bylerween2023 DAY 5 & DAY 6: CAME BACK WRONG/SUPERNATURAL CREATURES

this was one of the first things i’d started working on for bylerween and also probably took the longest LMAO but anyways: an iZombie au! based on the comic—not the TV show of the same name, if that wasn’t clear.

the key thing both the show and comic do share though is the idea that: zombie eats brains -> they get memories of the person whose brain they ate

i do wanna do some more stuff in this au/setting at a later date because i have ideas, but throwing this little… introduction to the situation together seemed like a fun thing to do for this event 💜

hmm, okei, time for this ran out. needless to say, the sample size for this poll is not substantial enough to consider the results of any statistical importance.

however, let's pretend for a moment that this genuinely showcases accurate trends in byler tumblr. based on these results, this would mean that over 20% of people enjoy dark concepts and would presumably like to see more,,, but they don't show their support for them via likes / reblogs because they don't want to be harassed. this lack of interactions obviously discourages the creatives who produce such fanworks, which then leads to even less stories and art that explore dark ideas :\

even on a small scale, this poll shows that there are at least a dozen people who feel they'd be mistreated for merely liking a specific subgenre of fanworks, which a) for smaller creatives (like yours truly), that encouragement could mean a lot; and b) this obviously doesn't speak well of the behaviour the overall fandom has displayed throughout the entirety of this year, at least -_-

i mean, for all the dark stuff i talk about i only really have one story of such nature and i've received at least twenty hateful asks for it.

(throughout all this, we also have to consider that the majority of people who even saw this little poll are probably following me and, based on what i write, i'd assume i have a lower-than-average percentage of followers who don't like —or downright despise— dark content)

so yeah. all this is to say that people really need to learn to respect creatives who feel like tackling dark topics in their work. as bylerween approaches and people start working on proper horror stories and artwork that include the dark tropes i mentioned in the original post (murder, obsession, cannibalism, dubious morals and so on), i beg you to please remember that literally none of us actually supports any of those behaviours and instead, we're just people who feel like exploring dark tropes for our art.

if it bothers you, please utilise the adequate tools to curate your online experience so you don't even have to see it. please do not bother the creatives who put out such fanworks, nor harass the people who express their support for the dark media in question.

and if you enjoy it, please support the writers and artists in any way you can, even if you do so anonymously via an ask or an ao3 comment. it genuinely means the world to us when we receive such encouragement :]

that’s a lot to live up to

my day 4 @bylerween2023 fic for “attacked by vecna”. I made this in 2 days cause my day 6 bylerween fic was complete ass but I needed smth to replace it.

basically mike getting possessed because why not. this will have multiple chapters cause I cant leave yall on a cliffhanger and I wanna continue this (read below or on ao3)

Mike Wheeler had just come to Hawkins when it happened.

Him, Will, Jonathan, Argyle and El were driving from Nevada to Indiana after rescuing El from the military. During that drive, they had learnt a lot. There was this new villain called Henry Creel, who wasn’t really new. He was actually the guy behind everything to do with the Upside Down. Will going missing then getting possessed, the flaying of almost half of Hawkins, that flesh monster that destroyed the mall; that was all the work of one man. And according to El, he was doing even more while they were all in California. All of the killing he was doing was to open a portal. And it seemed like it worked. As they were coming into Hawkins, it looked apocalyptic. There were cracks everywhere and something was leaking from them.

Jonathan had to stop to be checked when they were entering the town. The man there was making sure he had ID, drivers license, all the boring stuff. He was also extremely suspicious. He wondered why anyone would come to Hawkins when it just had an earthquake.

The kids took this time to get some fresh air. But just as they were all stepping out, Mike started to feel dizzy. It probably just me getting up to fast, he thought to himself. After a few minutes, it got worse. He tried to hide to; after everything that happened, he wouldn’t want to concern anyone with some minor stuff. But Will noticed.

“Mike, are you ok?” He asked, seeing his friend’s worn out expression. They were all tired, but Mike looked like he was sick.

“I’m fine.” Mike said. He didn’t get how Will noticed. He was usually good at covering up stuff like this. But moreover, why would Will be concerned. Mike had treated him like shit all spring break. My life began when I found you in the woods, that’s when Will went missing. And even before he came to California, he hadn’t even been trying to contact Will. Only a few calls and no letters. Well, he hadn’t even been sending El that many letters, his own girlfriend. How could he be isolating from everyone he knew.

You’re just hiding from the truth, Mike began to think. You can’t even face your own feelings for those two. Well, more like your lack of love for El. But the thoughts in Mike’s head started to sound different. The voice changed and distorted, until it became monstrous. His head spun and his vision went blurry.

“Mike, what’s wrong?” El came to her boyfriend, extremely worried. If Henry was attacking Mike, she didn’t have the resources or energy to get into his head. And anyways, she had defeated him while in Max’s head. But her attention was diverted by Will, who had pointed out something wrong with Mike.

“El, he’s passed out!” He shouted. Will also noticed something. “What’s wrong with his eyes, why are they white?”

Mike felt like he’d only passed out for a few seconds, but his setting entirely changed. He wasn’t on the edge of Hawkins anymore. He was in his garage. He’d been here before, and he recognised the memory. He saw himself, standing with someone else. Will. They were both younger. Mike knew what would happened next, and he needed to stop it. But he couldn’t move; he was frozen in place. I’ll just shout at them, he thought, but no matter how loudly he screamed, they couldn’t hear him. He’d just have to stand there, and watch himself.

“El’s not stupid, and it’s not my fault you don’t like girls!” His younger self shouted at Will. Those words were almost amplified. They stood out from the sound of the rain on the roof. Whatever brought him here wanted Mike to watch this. It wanted him to suffer. He watched as Will left the garage, getting soaked in the rain. Suddenly, Mike could move again. He needed to follow him, tell him that he didn’t mean anything, that he was just being a fucking idiot.

He was running faster than he ever had in his life, as Will was on bike. He was shouting at Will to stop, that he wanted to apologise, but it was as if he was deaf. Finally Will stopped somewhere in the woods: Castle Byers. It was his safe space, when the bullies or his dad got too bad for him. It was the only place where Will could have some peace. And in his hand was a baseball bat.

Will started to attack the shelter. Splinters of wood and painted signs lay in the mud. After a few minutes of destroying, he picked up something from the wet rubble. It was a picture of him and his friends at Halloween. They were all in ghostbusters costumes. Without any thoughts, Will ripped in half, dividing the photo into two. Mike shouted at him, asking him why he’d do that. Then, someone else came. It was younger Mike and Lucas.

But then the scene melted away like ice on a radiator.

Mike was back in the garage again, but it was different. It was in the Upside Down, or it had at least infected the place. Vines had grown on the walls, and the rain had went away. But the most concerning thing was the shadowy mass in the sky. It reminded Mike of a spider, with its many legs. He got curious and decided to get a closer look at it. Any instinct he would’ve had when it came to danger was gone.

“What the fuck?” Mike whispered to himself, as he moved toward the shadow. It was way bigger than he thought, and the legs were more like tornadoes. But as he was leaving, he heard a sudden rush of wind behind him. The shadow was moving towards him.

Mike tried to desperately outrun it. What even was this thing, he thought to himself, and why is it chasing me? But one of the shadow’s tornado-legs caught up to him in just a few seconds. Mike was now in the shadow. All he could see was darkness and ashes. Then from the dark mist, tendrils started to come out and go into Mike. First his eyes, then his nose and mouth. It felt like someone was pushing him under ice-cold water. Whatever this thing was, it made Mike feel so dreaful and shaky. Soon, he was losing himself to this thing. He started to hear his worst memories, things that he’d repressed into the darkest corners of his mind. But it was all over just as quickly as it had happened.

Mike woke up to his two friends shouting at him, asking if he was ok. Will was borderline shaking his friend. After a bit, Mike opened his eyes fully. He was in the back of Argyle’s van. As he looked out the window, he saw that they were still in the same place they’d stopped.

“Mike, are you ok.” Will asked, looking very worried.

“Yea, why wouldn’t I be?” Mike told him. He felt weirdly energetic, as if someone had revived him. It was a sort of twisted pleasure. But this new feeling also felt foreign, like it was someone else’s.

”You fainted for a really long time and your eyes were white.” El said. “We thought Henry had gotten to your head.”

“Guys, I’m ok.” Mike affirmed. “I actually feel really good.”

Just as Will was about to ask his friend something, Jonathan hopped back into the van and told them to get in. They all sat down. Mike was lost in thought, his face unreadable. El was relived that he was ok. But Will wasn’t convinced Mike was fine. Maybe it was just the Upside Down creeping into the town, but Will felt that familiar sensation he hadn’t felt for six months, but it was stronger than ever. He had felt that tingle (now more like a sting) on his neck when he was talking to Mike.

Just curious as i recently found your page, do you write byler angst? its jus like angst is kind of the only stuff i read(sad ik lmao) and im jus wondering. OBVI IF NOT, im here to enjoy all ur other work

thank you for the ask! :] i have some different flavors of angst, although none are too hardcore. i’ll give a summary below:

tread the water, child — oneshot. mike gets kicked out of the house for being gay and finds himself at the byers’ house working through things with joyce. angsty because of homophobia (external and internal), just general self-loathing via introspection from mike, and an open ending. i do plan on writing a sequel at some point, though, and that will have a happy ending.

let me be weak, let me sleep (and dream of sheep) — oneshot. set after s4. mike notices will hasn’t been sleeping a lot and does his best to help. this one has an open ending. also angsty due to psychological horror. and some byler angst, though that bit does get resolved. if you like the juxtaposition of the dread of the imminent end of the world and the joy of making out with your childhood best friend then yeah. this is the one.

and if you have a minute — multi-chaptered and unfinished. don’t know when i’m gonna get to it next, as i’m working on another fic (aka where my snippets have been coming from right now) as well as one or two i want to get out for bylerween. but anyways! mike and will have been happily married for many years, but mike dies of old age in their mid-eighties. will has an especially hard time coping. hurt/comfort in the way that the present is basically all hurt and the comfort comes from their shared memories in the past.

Ok ok ok, I was going to think long and hard about this question, but I think we both know my favorite AU. Superspy Byler has my heart and soul and I would marry it if I could. Shady Business is genuinely the best thing I've ever done.

As for stuff I haven't done yet... Well, first that upcoming fic I have (that I'll hopefully be able to work on after Bylerween, but I haven't even started writing my bylerween fic yet!! I'm behind!). I can't say a ton about it, but it's not an AU and I'm very, very excited about it. Like, it is taking up my entire mind rn, so I hope it turns out well.

But I am an AU fiend and I might just have to do something about the Victorian Byler drawing I did for History With Byler recently bc I need a fic immediately.

(Oh! And here's a fun fact: I wrote like 20 pages of this story I was gonna publish on April Fools' about the Byers adopting a dog but it's the homophobic dog- this was back when that was a thing if you know what I'm talking about- and it hates Mike but I abandoned it bc I thought it was stupid and it's been sitting in my drafts ever since)

Hi! I don't know if this is an appropriate place to share this as it could spark controversy or debate, but ever since the announcement I've been thinking about this and I think we all as a fandom need to remind everyone of something:

When Bylerween rolls around and some properly gory/messed up stories and artwork are released, PLEASE no one harass or attack the creators behind these works.

Just last week a familiar creator (someone who is an absolute sweetheart, helped with this event, and is a treasure to the fandom in general) was getting hateful asks for writing about cannibalism and Byler even though he tagged everything appropriately, gave a comprehensive summary of what would happen, and even hid the disturbing content under a "Read More".

And that was just last week. Whoever sent those ask is probably still lurking around and I wouldn't expect them to vanish in a couple months, so I guess this is all to say that we can't allow this type of harassment for when this event starts 😔 Once again, sorry if this isn't the place or time to share all this, but I'm scared people will limit their creativity or even not partake in the event due to fear of being attacked.

Hello hello! Yes, we agree and will not condone or tolerate any harassment of folks participating in Bylerween. We'll be requiring all creators of Bylerween fanworks to tag their works using these tags, add trigger warnings, and add Read-More cuts when applicable. We are also encouraging everyone to block tags that may trigger or upset them before the event. This is exactly why we have our tw tag list out months in advance, so that people can proceed with caution and have time to prepare for the event.

The spooky season has a wide range of content, ranging from fluffy Halloween stuff to more adult, scary, graphic themes. It's up to everyone to ensure that they're set up to engage with the content that they want, and not engage with content that they don't want to see. And we are hoping that everyone can be mature if they do run into a fanwork that simply isn't for them, and just scroll past it instead of sending hate.

We encourage everyone to creatively dig into their spooky ideas as much as they want while creating fanworks for Bylerween, and we're ready to celebrate all things frightening, sinister, and eerie with you all come October!!!

We announced the event so far in advance so that everyone has plenty of time to work on their event fanworks without feeling rushed. :) Start working on your stuff as soon as you want, and hold onto them until Bylerween!
