SPOILERS for "Fulgrim - The Perfect Son"

You were warned - Spoilers ahaed!

Okay, so it finally has happened. Pigs are flying, dogs are walking backwards and I am admitting that I'd rather read a Fulgrim-novel written by Graham McNeill than this one.

But to get to this point ... let me take the long route!

First - imagine a novel about a Primarch. Let's say Guilliman, because the Ultramarines are the example for everything. Let's say he returns. (Bear with me, I am not talking about how it actually happened for him!) And it is not explained at all, why he's back. What's his motivation. How? Don't ask stupid questions! Anyways. He's back. Now, what about his Legion? What about Calgar? Sicarius? His Librarius? Well, never mind, they don't matter, because (galaxy brain moment here!) - they don't exist! Instead they are replaced with a cast of new characters you never heard of before, but you are supposed to take as "have always been his favourites". And those characters are as generic as they come. Absolutely bland. Plus, Guilliman isn't even there most of the time. Also, apparently the Emperor is no longer a factor for anything.

That's the setting Jude Reid throws at the reader, just with Emperor's Children.

Okay. Okay. I can live with new characters. But maybe at least tie them with the rich history of the third? With all its glory and trauma? Harmony? Canticle City? The Phoenix Conclave? Anything? No?

Well. Then give them a gratious amount of Sex, Drugs and Rock'nRoll, because that's what they do in 40k? No? A bit? So Noise Marines aren't Slaanesh's sledgehammers any longer? Maybe remember how cool Eidolon and his Kakophonii screamed that White Scars ship to rubble or how Ramos tore down the Medean Gate on Luna? No? And the drugs are just some kind of better stims now? Like the stuff Lance Armstrong takes on a daily basis?

Well. Okay. No History, none of the cool guys ... maybe some Dark Prince-fuckery? No? Oh. The word "Slaanesh" is two times in the whole book and it's with sorcery, not normal EC or Fulgrim? And Dark Prince or She Who Thrirsts ... ah, nevermind. So, no Youngest God at all.

Well, Fulgrim is the mightiest servant of Slaanesh and he's the title character of the novel, so it's okay. Enough slaaneshi shenanigans for everyone! No? Fulgrim is there for about 5% of the novel and we never get his POV? Oh. Okay. Well.

Yes, I am disappointed. After Marc Collins gave us the great new Eidolon novel, I had high hopes Games Workshop wanting to bring out the coolness in the third Legion again.

But instead we got the most generic Chaos (not really) stuff ever. You could replace everybody with Red Corsairs and Fulgrim with the Tyrant and nobody would notice any difference.

And now I am back to the beginning. Why McNeill's EC may be horrible but way better than Reid's.

Because they are over the top. Because they are the superlative of extra. Because they are divas. Because they are trying to be cool AF. Because they are mean fuckers.

Reid's EC are what I always thought I wanted (my Midas-moment, if you will): Swordsmen. Duelists. But it turns out, that it is possible to fall to Slaanesh and hate excess (yes, Tamaris, the main char, is very offended by excess). Damn, girl! Take a page out of Ian StMartin's book and look up what excessive swordsmanship does for Lucius!

So, taking everything slaaneshi from the EC didn't do them any good. Apparently they are now Chaos Undivided, swear by "Gods" instead of their chosen patron God and such. Much generic. Wow. Sacrificing like they are the Word Bearers we have at home.

The ideal solution would be a mix of both: McNeill's extra queerness (because Reid's chars are giving off the most cis-het vibes I ever got from anything Warhammer! Even the Chaos Sorcerer reminiscing fucking Fulgrim is as sterilised as possible. I bet Reddit-Warhammer loves this book, because none of them pesky gays and their sexytimes!) and excessiveness and Reid letting them keep their beauty and dignity. It's very telling that the most erotic moment of the book is the main character kissing the guy he just killed.

Because that's the GREAT plus of this book. Finally! Beautiful Emperor's Children! Beautiful Fulgrim! Plaese, give me more of this! And they are (mostly) honourable! Awww, yiss! Yes, Reid is falling back into the way too familiar "uglyness and betrayal"-trope soon enough, but an effort was made.

But that's not enough to work as saving grace.

The novel is very clearly what @paniwarhamauser called "saturday morning cartoons to sell toys", because every buyable unit is mentioned and described very clearly.

But what this book is lacking, is a soul. An understanding for the EC's (and Fulgrim's - but the Phoenician barely features in the novel, so I will leave him out on this) unique tragedy, drama, history and power.

I am glad we got the great "Auric Hammer"-book (please let Marc Collins write more for EC! He gets them! Raging Eidolon gives me life!). And we still have Josh Reynold's superb Fulgrim-novel. But this new one is not for me.

I mean, we EC-fans have a lot of great novels and stories, compared to other Legions (poor Raven Guard for example). So I really shouldn't complain.

Well, rant over, I am calm and collected again and will continue reading the pleasant Alpha Legion-stuff I have left for the Fulgrim novel (may contain traces of Fulgrim). 😁

You got Solen'ya a few years ago to help you through some rough times and ever since then it's been just the two of you. He was your favorite thing to come home to but now you have Bucky. And he's amazing, after your third date you knew that Bucky was going to be in your life for a long time so you decided he needed to meet your Solen'ya.

Bucky was never this nervous. Why is he so nervous??? It's just a cat! Not a human, not a parent or a real son, no this was just your cat so why was his hand so damn sweaty? You asked Bucky to come over to your place for your next date. You said you wanted to show off some of the cooking skills you learned all the way back in home ec class in high school, but you also wanted to introduce him to Solen'ya. So you had no idea what would happen or how this was going to go but you wanted to be hopeful.

Bucky wipes his hand on his pants before knocking on the door. He grips the flowers, the daisies because he was going to get lilies than he learned cats can't be around those, a bit tighter than before when he hears your footsteps approach the door. "James" You squealed seeing him at the door, "come in make yourself at home dinner is almost done!" You smiled when you saw the flowers, they were your favorite. "Oh Jamie you didn't have to bring anything" You said blushing and taking the flowers from him to put in a vase. "It was no problem" He explains as he looks around the small home. It felt like you...felt like home. As he is looking around he notices a ball of grey fluff in the corner of his eye. "Hello there, you must be Solen'ya, I'm Bucky but your mom calls me James more often." He greets the cat by presenting his hands for him to sniff. Before he could react the cat begins to purr and rub against his metal palm.

You walk back into the living room to get Bucky for dinner but you freeze at the sight in front of you. There is Bucky, sitting on the floor with a cat in his lap purring louder than ever. You smile softly and take a photo to remember the moment where your heart melted, and to remember the moment you knew Bucky was the one for you.

Jaune Arc is actually the most practical student amongst The Huntsman academies, solely because he actually attended normal public schools. Most of the Huntsman and Huntress students attended academies dedicated to training Huntsman candidates, so they were taught alot of things about fighting and things they would need to know as Huntsman, with minimal effort put into the other subjects except the bare minimum (basically teaching to the test for anything not related to killing monsters).

Meanwhile Jaune attended public school and got alot more practical lessons, general knowledge, and was taught the best practical study sessions and reasonings.

So, I imagine that the Major Huntsman academies like Beacon make their lessons harder for general Huntsman trained students. So, Ooblecks fast Speaking, Ports seemingly pointless boasting stories, Glynda's gladitorial fight pits, and most likely all the others, are designed to be harder for Huntsman students to understand.

Meanwhile, for Jaune, his only issue is a general lack of pre-existing knowledge on the base subjects and constantly being compared to the 3 best Beacon 1st year teams (regretfully, team CRDL is a well trained team and is probably the 3rd strongest team amongst 1st year students.)

Once he gets the base knowledge he needs he's using practical skills to better understand his teachers lessons. From recording Ooblecks lessons and playing them back later at 0.25× speed, he makes the lessons eligible to normal people's ears. When listening to ports lessons, he notes down the cliffnotes of his stories and is able to piece out all the important information that's been cleverly hidden inside them. He only still has issues in Glynda's combat class because he is being constantly compared to the best and brightest of his year, also being partnered with a 4 time tournament champion. If we look at his fighting during the entrance Exam, he's actually pretty skilled, but he's not an outstanding shining star like the rest of his team or team RWBY. If he fought any of the other students not part of the 3 strongest 1st year teams, I'd estimate there would be a chance he'd win more often, most likely 80% more than he was before. His lessons from Pyrrha were quickly rising his skill to slowly match the rest of his team.

Some would point to Team JNPR VS Team BRNZ as an example of Jaune not being all that strong, but they would also forget that the Vytal Festival is the best teams from all 4 Kingdoms gathered to fight, and Jaune is as strong as the average Huntsman, maybe slightly above average.

All this to say, that Jaune was alot more skilled than people give him credit for, even all these years later, and any adaptation of Jaune in fanfiction should remember that Jaune probably knows alot more about regular school than any of his friends and can casually bring up Home Ec and the terrible lunch food and almost all of them would be confused. dumbfounded even.

So I've brought full fluff with this. How I perceive legions react to receiving unconditional love and care from human(s) in the husbandry altered earth.

Disclaimer: I don't know all the successor chapters so I'm going broad strokes.

Baseline: All marines Chaos, Renegade or Loyal, Do feel displaced. They're all just some level between coping and thriving.

Blood Angels - Honestly not too bad. They were a decently kind legion before and they still are. There is worry about their previous location but also!! There's so much time for art now, and these humans don't venerate them as untouchable so they can actually be More social. Not to mention their humans are willing to aid in their dietary needs.

Rating: Doing crayon drawings with your bonded's youngling while dinner cooks. Life is good.

Imperial Fist - Coping to okay. The most important part of a fortress are the ones who built and man it. And they can't man their fortresses if they're not in the same bloody timeline as them! Still though, so much in need of fortification Here too.

Rating: Coming home to find your Imperial Fist turned your home into a seige proof fortress cause they got separation anxiety while you were at work. Hugs inside their panic room storm cellar are mandatory for the rest of the night.

Thousand Sons - What do you Mean no human here has magic!?!? Utterly baffled by the absence of Psychers. Humans here are even more fragile than back home! Also one of the most aware that the warp is doing something fucky to make this happen. Unbonded TSs are studying this phenomena as much as they can. Bonded ones are studying their humans for latent magic. They are enjoying the many mythological/occult books and paraphernalia available.

Rating: Being coerced into always picking magic themed movies for movie night but not really minding as the way your Thousand Son takes intense focused notes and gets you in on the pantomime is endearing.

Night Lords - What is Wrong!? With!? These!? Humans!? Utterly Baffled that humans here are brave enough to approach them. Did their silhouettes not strike FEAR in the hearts of entire militaries!? Did the mere whisper of their name not bring entire planets into compliance!? Did they not- Wait what are you doing? What is this!?

Rating: Spooky Scary Tsunderes

Salamanders: Best Day EEEEEEEEVER!!! They are SO happy. There's so much GOOD they can do here. Help the elderly cross the streets, aid lost children, torch human killer warbands into ash...finger painting.And the forging, The Forging! Showing these humans a proper 40th millenia forge (or as close as possible) and there are so many who want to learn! They have a whole new interconnected family to look after and only occasional minor life and death situations.

Rating: Finger painting with the daycare children while your bonded who works there buzzes around giving out snacks and compliments, before the group switches to forge practice. Vulcan Would be Proud.

Emperors Children/Noise Marines: Putting these in the same blurb because they're cut from the same cloth. They both love art of all kinds. Its just the type of art in question. Emperors Children are drawn to classic mediums, while Noise Marines skew more modern. Both groups also partake in much Much primping. Beauticians to special effects make up artists find themselves the muses of EC/NM. EC's are more concerned by the current situation, but they can't deny this Terra has many experiences to offer. And so many cute humans who adore their attention and beauty treatments. It's really quite gratifying. The Noise Marines are much more go with the flow. This world is ripe with new sensations and they're eager to indulge, especially in the music scene. Even if these settlements pale in comparison to those of their universe they still have excellent entertainments like bars, dance clubs and Skating Rinks.

Rating: Having a back and forth home spa day/makeup session with your EC/NM while listening to ya'lls favorite playlist. Then tearing up the dance floor when you go out that night.

SO I love this. And I kinda agree! Though some of these are a bit memey/community fueled slants but honestly legion stereotypes kinda have a curl of truth to them.

EC in my headcanon also make a lot of the clothes as everybody came in just their armor so they make the clothes.

Night Lords are very on point. They never said to stop. And when they bond they bond HARD sure they might act tsundere but they crave that bond.

Iron Warriors are completely on point. Continue to praise them they will siege and burn down everything for their humans.

Also, the fact that "younger generations have no common sense or practical skills" is so fucking intentional. It is such a capitalist oppression thing, for literally every person.

TL;DR: PLEASE understand that there's a really good chance that it's capitalism's fault that young people "have no common sense or practical skills" not your meemaws fault or your grandkids fault, y'know?

For example in the US, people who became adults during the great depression (the great grandparents of Millennials/Gen Z), knew how to do a huge amount of practical, everyday things. They could farm, do household repairs, many of them had carpentry skills and automotive/equipment repair skills. They made many of their own clothes, grew and preserved most of their own food, etcetera. This meant they held little need for the larger capitalist system and had very little motivation to uphold it if it mistreated them. They did not have many material assets but they had valuable knowledge that made them more independent from capitalism.

Now look at Gen Z, we are becoming adults in a time in America where we have EVEN LESS purchasing power than our Great Depression counterparts. On top of that, factually, we have exponentially less individuals with this large variety of everyday skills. So for many of us, when our car breaks down, we have no knowledge on how to fix it and we own no assets. All we can do is sell our time in order to pay someone else to do it. When we are hungry, we have minimal access to land, many of us don't have the knowledge and skills to grow our own food, we have to sell our time in order to go to a grocery store so that we can eat. Unfortunately, we as a generation "need" capitalism for this because we do not have the skills to do these things on our own anymore.

Now the question is why don't we have these skills? Well, I've seen a couple schools of thought but I think both of them are at least partially incorrect.

1) Kids today just don't care about stuff like that and don't want to learn! Kids have never wanted to learn "boring" adult skills. Kids have and always will be kids, but as adults we appreciate these skills and understand the value of knowing them and passing them on to your kids (even if they find it boring). PLUS, many kids do have interest in these things if they're encouraged to give it a chance. I don't think this is truly the issue.

2) Boomers didn't care to teach us! They were lazy and now we are suffering!! They likely didn't believe these skills were necessary for young people anymore. From their perspective the economy had been flourishing for as long as they could remember, why believe that would change? I'm not saying the lack of foresight isn't detrimental, but the viewpoint can be explained. I don't think this is a notable part of the overall issue either.

These two schools of thought lead us as the working class to blame each other for the deficit. It divides us. I propose a third theory on the matter: these skills were systematically stomped out in younger generations to make us more reliant on capitalism. Through assorted methods:

- removal of hands-on classes from school through budget cutting, etc (wood shop, agriculture, home ec, automotive, etc) (PS: this is isn't a "bring back gender roles" take just because I included home ec in the list, every gender should learn home skills like cooking, mending and cleaning, as well as skills such as automotive and carpentry.)

- distraction via the promotion of unhealthy overconsumption of media (video game/TV/social media addiction) (PS: this is not a "technology bad" take, tech is fine but OVERconsumption of media is unhealthy and is even a problem in older generations now.)

- devaluation of these skills via the conflation of them with an archaic and backward social period (Yes, people in older generations were and largely still are racist, sexist, homophobic, and that's fucked. That doesn't mean growing and canning your own food or learning from peepaw how to fix a carburetor makes you any of those things.)

- the manufactured institution of lawns, "landscape" and HOA's preventing us from growing our own food at home on the land we DO have access to

- many others I don't feel like unpacking here as I'm already writing a novel in this post apparently, but you get my meaning

So I guess my point is that we need to unpack our feelings on this and understand that there's a really good chance that it's capitalism's fault that young people "have no common sense or practical skills" not your meemaws fault or your grandkids fault, y'know? As the working class we have to stop punching left and right and start punching up. Also, since I already hear "but boomers own all the stuff and bought their house for $5 in 1970!" (which is a valid sentiment) I share with you an important (paraphrased) quote I heard the other day:

"When the lord of the land commands the people to go out and work his lands in the sun, your enemy is not the man who is wearing a hat."

Other generations aren't the real enemy here y'all, it's the capitalist billionaires. Please see that.

Dear Diary,

School has started up again. Yay? I like seeing my friends and I'm excited to see what's next on our reading list in English and start my new Home Ec projects, but we haven't been back three days and I'm already hating math class again. (Papa thinks it might be time to get me tested for dyscalculia--at least until then I've got Hermione to help me. I love Danny and Papa but they're engineers so when they try to explain math to me it doesn't make any sense, and Dad is even worse than me at math.)

At least school is probably closing for the rest of the week thanks to a huge winter storm that's supposed to blow in tonight? I'm looking forward to an extended winter break, hopefully our power holds out 🤞

Last weekend was fun at least! Papa and Dad's friends, the Maximoffs, invited us to visit them and go see a production of Peter Pan! I love Peter Pan and I love a road trip, plus getting to see my friend Viv is always nice, so I think it was a really good way to end the break! Tía Honey Lemon even helped me put together a Wendy cosplay to wear to the show 💙

Oh, also Aunt Cass found her old dollhouse in storage and said she'd bring it over for me once she gets it cleaned up? Papa said he played with it when he was a kid and even put in electrical lights so I'm really excited to see it--I think it might be the perfect home for my Calico Critters since I just started collecting them!

Content Warnings: in more general terms I want to remind people to be aware of the nature of Kaz and Inej's experiences and relationship since even if I'm not directly addressing these things they tend to be implicit in any writing about them, but specifically to this chapter there's implied ptsd references.

Chapter 46 - Kaz

“You should go back to the house,” said Kaz, adjusting his gloves slightly, “I only needed you for the interrogations, you should go into lockdown with the others now,”

He watched Nina and Jesper share a look between them and suppressed the need to roll his eyes.

“I’ll be fine,” he said, “I’m not going to do anything rash. Go back to the house and I’ll be there by this evening,”

“Where are you going?” asked Jesper

“I’m going to try to find Alby - he has to be hiding out somewhere nearby,”

“And what if you need us?” asked Nina, folding her arms across her chest.

“I won’t,”

A moment passed.

“Go home,” said Kaz, “If you don’t start walking I’m sure I can find a more creative way to get you there,”

Nina sighed melodramatically as Kaz turned away.

“What do we do if you aren’t back this evening?” she called after him as he began to walk.

Kaz looked over his shoulder.

“Give me until ten bells. After that?” he shrugged, “Pray,”

He walked away, hearing Jesper mutter behind him that ten bells was really night, not evening. Kaz flexed his fingers inside his gloves, fighting off the exhaustion seeping through his bones. He hadn’t stopped to rest since lying on the bed with Inej as she fell asleep, and hadn’t for some time before that either. A new day was beginning over Ketterdam; the sun was forcing its way between the slowly thinning clouds from the rain of the last few days. Kaz thought of Inej’s girls - wherever they’d been in the days before they returned to the shelter had probably not been warm and dry. And what of Maya Olsen?

Maybe she had followed Inej’s instructions and left the city, but he doubted it. He didn’t blame her for her accusation - whatever her father had done to her aside, Inej had told him about the other Fjerdan girl at the Tulip Mill. He’d known of course, though admittedly only in vague terms, that he’d dropped from two information sources at the house to one, but he’d given it less thought than he ought to have done. People died all the time in Ketterdam, and in his line of work more than most. But he couldn’t deny it, could he?

He had killed Celina Muff no less than Pekka Rollins had killed Jordie.

Kaz felt sick.

No, Maya would not have left the city yet. And if Alby really was building himself a little army of walking grudges, she would be a prime candidate. Kaz needed to find them quickly, shut this thing down before it started - and hopefully pull Maya out of the action. He knew she was angry, but she didn’t deserve anything he was about to bring down on Alby. If she was smart, she’d let him and Inej get her out of the way.

Kaz didn’t really know where he was going to start looking for Alby, but he needed the others out of his way. He needed to be alone - and he could admit to himself that he also needed to know they were safe. He counted the bedrooms of the Hendriks’ house in his head - Wylan and Jesper’s, then him and Inej in one room, and the girls in the other two. Space would be tight to fit in Nina tonight - even tighter if Inej needed the bed to herself. Maybe Kaz could take a sofa, or just spend the night working in Wylan’s office. He knew that most of the house’s upper rooms lay empty, as Jan Van Eck’s servants had moved on to other employment over the years Wylan and Jesper had replaced only a few of their positions, but he didn’t know how much space there was. Still, maybe Nina at least could find a bed up there; Kaz would prefer not to negotiate four flights of stairs anyway, if possible.

“We don’t really need anyone,” Wylan had once told Kaz, when he noticed they hadn’t hired anyone to fill an empty maid’s role.

It must have been almost three years ago now.

“I would’ve thought you just wanted to offer the employment,” Kaz admitted with an easy shrug.

“If someone needs it they can have it,” said Wylan, “But there’s hardly that much to do…”

He’d paused for a moment and glanced at the door, lowering his voice in case Jesper could hear him.

“Maybe if we adopt it will be different; we’ll have less time on our hands. But I don’t know if Jesper wants to or not - and right now the house is quiet and generally always tidy; it’s just us,”

Kaz raised an eyebrow.

“You want a kid?”

“Maybe - but that’s not the point, the point is that I will offer something if someone needs it, but we don’t need it,”

Less than a week later, Kaz had knocked on the door once again.

“Wylan, Esme. Esme, Wylan,”

Wylan had stared at him.

“Erm, hi?”

Esme had said nothing.

“Go on then,” said Kaz, “Inside,”

She stared between him and Wylan with wide eyes as Wylan stepped to one side to let her pass. Kaz followed her inside and Wylan closed the door behind them.

“You gonna elaborate, Kaz, or…?”

“Esme came to the Crow Club last night,” said Kaz, “And asked me for a job. I don’t have anything for her, but I thought you might,”

Shortly later, Wylan had murmured to Kaz.

“You had nothing for her?”

“I have nothing for her. Look at her - that girl wouldn’t survive a week in the Barrel and you know it,”

“You’re protecting her,”

“I’m protecting myself,” he glared at Wylan, “I don’t need a liability on my crew,”

“Of course,”

“Don’t look at me like that,”

Wylan just smiled. It had made him look very punchable, but Kaz showed remarkable restraint.

Kaz walked towards the Slat with no particular intention of finishing up there, he just needed a sensible direction to walk in whilst he thought - one of his clubs had been struggling for at least a month, the other had been half-destroyed, and yesterday half the damn Barrel saw him running through the streets at top speed towards Fifth Harbour. He couldn’t afford anything more that might look like a slip in his reputation. His property on the Lid was currently the only thing bringing in notable funds, but he supposed the silver lining of that was that it was where he kept prices highest. He had little day-to-day involvement with it himself, but checked the books just as he did those for the Crow Club and the Silver Six.

Maybe the Slat wasn’t the worst starting place. After all, if he didn’t calm the troops this could spiral and he could very well end up with a mutiny on his hands - he didn’t have time for that right now. He would go in, spin something short about having the situation under control, encourage Anika to share - and, only of course if she saw fit, embellish upon - his interrogations of the crew that attacked the Crow Club, and find his old papers on Dime Lions safe houses. He was sure they were somewhere in his and Inej’s apartment. Whilst he was there he’d find Ethan to finally discuss the Olsen ledger - damn it, he couldn’t. Kaz’s mind had been clouded when he demanded from Filip the ledger that had been stolen from his office; he’d been wrong. The entire ledger hadn’t been taken: it had pulled open and left on the floor, a fistful of pages ripped from it like a gutted fish, the Olsen transaction one of them.

And he’d been stupid enough to tell Anika she was looking for a ledger, not a page. The thing was probably already ashes on the Reaper’s Barge.

It was a setback, but still the Slat was the most sensible starting point. The building was crowded, it was always crowded, but as Kaz walked in a hush fell over the room and all heads turned towards him. All of them were hiding anxiety with anger, and most of them weren’t doing a good job of it. He smiled at them briefly, then let it drop.

“You may have noticed we have a little problem,” he began.

He continued to walk as he spoke and the crowd parted for him whichever way he went. He moved towards the stairs, slowly.

“And after some… questioning of involved parties I’ve learned who was responsible for the damage to the Crow Club,”

A half-truth; Kaz had known before he started asking the questions, but he hadn’t known for certain when he first got to the club. He reached the stairs and moved up two steps before turning back again, so he could view the room properly.

“Our attacker did not intend to destroy the building, it was a ploy to leave me a message and draw attention away from his real plan, but it is still going to take a lot of work to reopen the Crow Club. In the meantime, I’m going to be splitting our efforts between getting more pigeons through the doors of the Silver Six,” he paused, letting a smile slowly creep across his face, “and catching the bastard who dared to wrong us,”

Several people cheered, and then several more joined in.

Kaz grinned.

“Any questions?”

Hi I hope you’re having a great day. Lately my TikTok algorithm has put me on military TikTok, honestly might have done that to myself tbh. But I’ve been doing a deep dive on military mre meals (made ready to eat, which is what troops in the military eat during Boot Camp and while they’re deployed) MRE meals have become more acquirable to the general public as some are able to buy them off of websites and former/current members of the military are able to buy them also though they have more access than people who are not in the military. I don’t really know how it happened, but this made me think about your military Dad AU and cabin altogether. I can just see Quaritch having a bunch of MRE meals in the basement in case they ever get snowed in or something or if they just run out of food which probably would never happen. Or Lyle bringing the MRE’s along with the military uniforms for Hunter and Spider just to rub some extra salt in the wound. As you said Lyle is a big bully and I think it would definitely be in character.

Anyways, I’m rambling but what if instead of boiled chicken and vegetables Quaritch had hunter and spider eat MRE meals while he was making them do Boot Camp. I can just see spider looking at him and go. “What the fuck is this?” Cue punishment push ups. Anyway what are your thoughts on this? How do you think the boys would react to having an MRE? What would spiders reaction be to an mre while Quaritch and Lyle are enjoying Lyle’s going way dinner?

I’ve seen similar videos before. I’m not on TikTok anymore because I felt like it was rotting my brain but I’ve watched YouTube videos of people trying MREs. According to them some of the meals actually aren’t that bad. Others totally are though. I went to a military supply website when I first read your ask to see what different MREs there are and it’s actually kind of crazy how many different food options there are. I saw different flavors of pie, stir fries, pasta, the list goes on.

So I can see two different scenarios that can actually exist together. The first one is Quaritch gives the boys MRE’s when he doesn’t feel like cooking for them that night but it’s only flavors he used to hate back in the military. The ones that made him think, maybe I’ll just starve. And it’s not just him. His whole squad used to hate these particular meals. They would always end up as their last resort food because no one wanted to touch them. The boys equally hate them. Your totally right that the first time he gives them a MRE Spider goes, “what the fuck? You think this actually counts as food? A dog wouldn’t even eat this shit.” Cue 100 push ups, jumping jacks, and 20 laps around the house. Spider never complains about them again. Next time they eat them Quaritch can’t help but laugh when Spider mumbles to Hunter, “maybe starving isn’t so bad.”

After having them a few times whenever Quaritch announces, “I don’t feel like cookin’ tonight boys so go pick a MRE.”

Spider and Hunter immediately rush to say, “we’ll cook!”

Quaritch thinks it’s funny. He always stipulates, “fine. Make what y’a can from what’s already prepped in the fridge. But you better make enough for me too or else I’ll take your meals and you can have the packets.” The boys both nod eagerly.

They can’t make much since the knives are all locked up. But Spider has been fending for himself for as long as he can remember. Plus both boys have at least taken one home ec class in school so they can get by. Spider will cook up the chicken breasts they eat almost every night but he actually seasons them and sears them until they’re golden brown. Hunter will boil water and cook pasta. It’s about as good as he can do. They roast whatever veggies they can in the oven, typically baby carrots and broccoli since they doesn’t really need to be cut. There’s a jar of tomato preserves they use to make a sauce and just like that they’re having the best meal they’ve had in weeks. The boys love it and cooking together is very fun for them. It’s their only bright spot in their otherwise terrible situation. Quaritch loves it too. It’s the closest he can get to going out to a restaurant.

The other idea I had is that the boys get MRE desserts as treats when they’re good. They’re both exhausted. It was an insanely long day. Neither of them had any energy to fight back though so it was a relatively peaceful one. Their dad walks in, all smiles and says, “I’ve got somethin’ for you boys for bein’ so well behaved today.” Both of them just stare at him blankly. From behind his back Quaritch pulls out two shinny silver packets labeled vanilla cake. They both take them in disappointment but when they eat them they find that they’re not that bad. Not great. But definitely better than boiled chicken and veggies.

1. actually now i am legally obligated to write about all of them in high school situations. let’s go. as i write this i’m pretty sure in a high school au mari, ros, and norie would actually just be, like, friends, not actually adoptive sisters – ros has her very big and loving family, norie has a really tense situation as Adopted Chinese Daughter of Rich White Parents Who She Hates, marigold uhhhh god wouldn’t it be interesting and insane if she was still living with her bio mother and sisters? this is my narrative and in any narrative of mine high school is the worst case scenario, lol. evil evil place i will never go back to.

marigold is i am pretty sure in a world without magic hyperfixated on science/biology/nature, so she does really good when it’s anything related to that or cooking and really bad when it’s Literally Anything Else. she complains a lot about there not being some kind of home ec class until it’s explained to her that home ec would not JUST be cooking and she’s like oh well i don’t care about that then. she earned the position of student council vice president by bribing the general high school population with baked goods and only served half a term before realizing she hates talking to most people. REALLY tight with the cheer squad bc that’s roslin’s group, so she brings them a lot of snacks and hangs out on the bleachers with norie while ros cheers <3

evie has like 2 friends and one of them is a dead rat possibly and when marigold finds out about this she does her usual Marigold Response To Evie (edging awkwardly away so she doesn’t have to actually be an older sister about it). keeps on getting detention, mostly for small scale things like graffiti and skipping class, occasionally light arson. punched a kid in the mouth one time and maintains he was asking for it. she’s SUPER small though so she doesn’t do a lot of damage in fights but that does NOT stop her from trying SO HARD. (that girl is a teenage cryptid and the only reason she’s got friends in her twenties is because hot + confident gets you A LOT OF PLACES.)

roslin is a cheerleader yay hooray <333 the most #basic girly you will ever meet. has a not insignificant tiktok following that’s driving thea up the wall and they get into a lot of fights about internet safety (these fights are super limited by the fact that thea kind of doesn’t know what the internet is). despite being one of the most popular girls in school, she refuses to spend her lunch breaks with anyone NOT norie or marigold, and will blow off literally anyone and everyone to just sit on the roof with her girlies.

lenora is angling for the position of most weird goth girl of all time. full face of makeup, a whole bunch of piercings (all of them are fake bc she’s scared of needles), lots of very expensive black outfits that earn her absolutely no respect from the goth crowd at their school bc they see her as just a rich kid buying the look. she’s the only one among the three girls who actually gets good grades and they are constantly cheating off of all of her homework all the time. she’s apathetic acerbic and kinda bitey but she will go around the school holding roslin’s hand all the time and if anyone comments she will pull a knife on them. normal activities. (a lot of people assume ros and norie are dating and they are absolutely mutually outraged by the concept.)

thea teaches PE and has been momming the shit out of mari ros and norie ever since norie got into a screaming fight with thea in front of the entire class when thea was like “you don’t get to walk the mile giving each other piggy-back rides anymore” (reasonable request) and norie was like OH SORRY MOM I DIDN’T REALIZE WE LIVE IN A FASCIST SOCIETY!!!!!! then realized she’d called their gym teacher “mom” in front of the entire class and lost so much street cred in that moment, and the psychic damage she took was so adorable to thea that thea was like ok those are my kids now i think. she already SORTA knew roslin bc thea’s friends with roslin’s mom, but finding out about norie (terrible parents) and marigold (horrifying mother) ??? thea’s been sort of trying to semi-legally figure out a way to usurp parental rights for the last few years. also tried to put a hit out on marigold’s mom but was informed by one of the two (2) friends she has that that’s “a bad idea.” (she still thinks it’s a good one.)

lion is still in his teens too so he’s mostly just evie’s twitchy quiet friend who hangs out with her and the dead rat under the bleachers. they don’t talk a lot but they’re kind of inseparable. evie’s mom hates him. marigold said something derisive about lion once and evie tried to punch HER in the mouth, which marigold got blamed for, somehow, which evie then spent like half an hour hysterically monologuing to lion about on the phone. they are hopelessly in love with each other and mutually convinced it won’t work all without ever talking to each other. he writes “mr. lion northaven” on his notebooks sometimes

a bonus elodie! evie’s twin sister. blends perfectly into the background. gets the best grades in the family and is somehow in every extracurricular without anyone actually really knowing her. quiet, organized, neat, perfect. not a lot of people actually realize they’re twins because they carry themselves so differently and they’re never together at school. mom’s favorite.

2. evie’s biological sisters are marigold and elodie and she loves them with the force of a thousand suns and for a lot of complicated reasons this uncomplicated love of hers is not exactly returned in the same way that it is given. marigold’s adoptive sisters are roslin and lenora and she loves THEM with the force of a thousand suns and evie is the kind of girl who’s fine with it because her love does not change shape even when those who love her think maybe it should.

3. evie would come onto faith and faith would i think be immediately and cruelly dismissive specifically because evie would resonate with a lot of things about faith that faith violently hates about herself. (starved for love, loves hard and without her own permission, incredibly casual about sex to the point of detachment, absolutely no sense of self preservation or self worth).

4. oooh let’s make a sexuality list actually!!!

marigold is bisexual! enamored with people she can easily drag around on a leash, independently of gender.

evie is bisexual as well and i don’t think she has a type that is really established all that well beyond “people who want me.” evie has many problems

roslin is my single token heterosexual. absolutely impeccable taste in men, it’s just that all of her relationships always end in ways that are extremely amicable but Really, Really Weird. one guy left to join the circus. one guy left to man a lighthouse. one guy’s in witness protection. That kind of thing

lenora is a lesbian but it takes her a while to figure that out because she hates everyone indiscriminately, so for some time she just identifies as bisexual until experiencing attraction to a lady and going OH. OKAY. SURE

thea is a butch lesbian, and also nonbinary, though i don’t think she’d ever actually use the word to describe herself. her relationship to the concept of being a woman is less self-identification and more a label she likes to use and define as “being attracted to women.” she’s a woman because her love of women is coming from a female identified place, but other than that gender is of no use to her. she’s too old for the bullshit.

didn’t realize it until right this moment but lion (who i can include on this list even with his 900 psychological issues idc. that’s my son who was never gonna make it out) IS bisexual it’s just his Home Situation was such that the internalized homophobia’s keeping him closeted. not really something he’s likely to figure out, though; evie’s the only person who’s real to him and when he notices a man is hot he mostly just freaks out because what if evie leaves him for that objectively hotter guy. surely this will never cause any problems

5. man i honestly feel like all of them have some degree of neurodivergence simply because that’s where i’m coming from and that’s how i write them? i will say though that the places i feel like the qualities manifest the strongest are marigold (autism) my new girl beetle (autism) and evie (adhd) though i did recently get the feedback that norie reads super autistic :’) i will say if you see it it’s probably there lol.

7. i had to really think about this one for a second ngl? sofie is for sure the most autism baby of all time actually so she’s really standoffish and awkward around children her own age, and i actually think art’s method of just running up to people and deciding they’re friends would melt her heart pretty immediately. she’s delighted by immediate acceptance and attention! they’d be inseparable and bella would go BALLISTIC.

8. i am running through all the girls in my head and i am actually 100 percent sure that almost all of them attach themselves to nora. mari has mommy issues x5000 + nora reminds her of thea, norie (lenora) and nora (eleanora) are literally deliberately cut from the same cloth and would get along like long lost sisters, and thea is genuinely obsessed with sharp-tongued moms who have emotional issues but love their kids tremendously (woman wants to homewreck so bad and will not succeed). roslin and evie are the outliers; roslin loves donovan’s warmth and positivity, and evie gets really really really attached to bella. so fast.

9. delighted to inform u that jaheira’s kids are canon, we meet them, they give her SUCH grief, and i love them, and so does she.

He brings forth feelings that she never got to feel as a child nor as a soldier, and yet, has a massive fear of losing him (whether to forces outside of her control or because of her own self-perceived vices and flaws), leading her to only adore from afar. This becomes ten-times worse when she meets a newly single Holly Pepper, a pragmatic and devoted, if sometimes snarky, member of Eden's Gate. This bisexual disaster has two free hands but can't grab for shit. I think this fits her perfectly.

Sonya, The Apex (Life, Despair & Monsters)

So I've decided to give Sonya mommy issues, which may or may not contribute in her attraction and her (initially unhealthy) relationship with Jennifer (granted, Jennifer is helping matters). Though both learn that, below their hard-shelled and rotten surfaces, are two people capable of loving each other beyond manipulation and usefulness. But that makes them an unholy matrimony obsessed with each other instead so there's no telling whether it has made them better or worse.

Azriel (Wings And Horns, Far Cry The Silver Chronicles)

Azriel has never really had a great experience with love. She is the reincarnation of Joseph Seed's daughter after all. A reincarnation she earned by serving the concept of Death itself for either one hundred or one thousand years. She came back into the world a decade after her original death, and was born into a home that didn't understand her, and the forced transition into Eden's Gate didn't make it any better. Also, going to say, after finishing rereading all the books again, I stand by my thought that Genevieve didn't get to pick who she married after her Ethan died. Its very likely the marriage was planned even before everything happened, and I'm basing this on the fact that she seems to hold no connection to her spouse. Hes never mentioned outside of the family tree, the only man she talks about is Ethan Carter, all her energy as a Sheer is spent watching her descendants and helping bring Ethan L back.

Genevieve very likely wouldn't have wanted to marry, seeing as shes still heartbroken even in death. Her father forcing her to marry, maybe because he didn't want to deal with her, maybe due to his own grief, or because she was the only person who could carry on th Duchannes bloodline at that point, isn't a huge stretch. All we know about her father is that he loved his wife, he didn't like EC, and that he traveled for business. Theres a non insignificant chance he was gone when everything happened and came back to no home, and only one daughter who had just cursed their entire bloodline going forth. Theres nothing definitive from what I can see, but the lack of affection for her husband, the fact that she doesn't even stay in her home in the Otherworld, it doesn't make me think the marriage was exactly her idea
