we get a lot of really great stuff in system collapse about murderbot's relationships with ART and ratthi, which makes sense, because it spends almost the entire book with them. but i also love how even though mensah isn't there for most of the story, other people keep reminding mb of her:

chapter 2, page 25: “From ART’s personnel file, she [Karime] was older than Mensah and she didn’t look like an intrepid space explorer, either, even in the protective environmental suit.”

2, 27: “It took Karime three seconds to process the abrupt statement. (She was almost as good at not looking annoyed as Mensah was.) She kept her expression neutral and patient.”

2, 28: “In the underground colony room, Karime lifted her brows. ‘Another occupied site?’ I thought she was being careful not to show too much reaction. It was the way Mensah would have played it.”

4, 70: “Iris looked at me and I saw her hesitate, because her hesitation looked a lot like Dr. Mensah’s hesitation. And I realized I really didn’t want to go down there.”

5, 104: "Iris has that same thing as Dr. Mensah, the thing where she’s able to look and sound calm under circumstances where shit is possibly about to go down.”

it's spent so much time with her and it knows her so well and respects her so much that she's the model against which it compares all other humans. it thinks about her when they're not together. it's protective of her. it has such total faith in her competence. it (non-romantically) loves her and doesn't want to not see her again. idk man, it just gets to me! and they were teammates (oh my god they were teammates!!)

The synthetic electrosensory system had been years in development, having thrown Baxter onto the project the moment Vox realized that technology had possibly advanced enough to create the miniscule array that was now imbedded in the flesh-like material covering the layers of unfeeling, rubber-coated wires his body was created from. It wasn't the same as nerves, only sensing the electric currents given off by everyone else's nervous system instead of any degree of temperature or pressure or texture or the usual sensations that real skin offered, but the very idea of getting some amount of sensation back had been too exciting to pass up, especially with Valentino eager to help him run the beta test on it.

Speaking about women in twf, it makes me so happy that the main character in the series is a woman, who has such an interesting character and depth. Plus, I assume that Sophie's gonna be with Jenny a lot of time, which means wlw ship will drive the plot

I definitely agree with this! It's honestly relatively really unusual for projects in this niche of internet horror to have a female lead, or to even have characters that are women that are... interesting? or fleshed out? or even significantly relevant in any way?

I guess I'm not as versed in internet horror as i could be, but the only projects that immediately come to my mind for important & fleshed out female leads/central characters are like. Daisy Brown? Diminish? I never finished Hiimmarymary and haven't watched it in a long time but I vaguely remember that being good or fine in this regard.

It feels like internet horror generally falls into the same trappings as all other media where the majority of female characters exist only to serve as like. Someone's Wife. Someone's Mother. Someone's Girlfriend.

astarion's concern with ascension and losing sunlight is just,, hmm,, something that strikes such a chord in me because he's concerned about his own freedom, yes, but he's also worried about the way this could restrain tav. just one of the ways that the ascension seems so much more beneficial to him, but more importantly (bc he can't put himself first) to tav and their relationship. it just feels like even when he's driven towards power, his motivator has shifted from personal concern to concern for tav. and obviously this isn't the healthiest and truly indicates his low self-esteem. but also tav would die for this man. tav would kill for this man. tav HAS killed for this man. it's not about what experiences astarion can offer tav (sunlight, sex, etc), but about who astarion is, and that he chooses to stay true to himself, regardless of whether tav is on the other side of that. just that trust is so integral to astarion's character. there's something poetic in there.

but like.. this is The Politics Game and half of the fanbase has taken from it exclusively "omg my blorbos meow meows babygirls" and seemingly failed to engage w the political text of the story. like ok if you came out of disco elysium and saw a man who is like.. at best 1 week sober from extreme substance abuse that has made him actively suicidal and threatening to others around him, who is desperately in need of actual, urgent help, AND who is a POLICE OFFICER, like, THEE person who absolutely should NOT be a cop, on top of, yknow, that, like, police are bad already??? a man who has canonically committed serious and traumatic police brutality due to this very instability and disregard for anyones safety and has continued to be allowed to occupy this position? and you get an ending in which his co-workers who have basically just been watching from the sidelines being like.. exasperated at him but not actually doing anything about the massive risk to himself and all these civilians safety just going "well, yknow, hes a good guy after all, and he hasnt been getting drunk and waving his police issued firearm at frightened civilians for a whole week, and he sure saw a bug, so, like, just come back to work man" and thought that was a satisfying and good ending...... after all the talk abt copaganda white ppl is the same
