also on the voice thing, we all know kris is one of the most autism coded characters to ever exist, but i really do love everything that both routes of chapter four when taken in conjunction told us about kris, being nonverbal, and how that's not painted as a bad thing?
it's pretty common i've seen for silent protagonists to be headcanoned as nonverbal autistic, but i think this is the first time i've seen it be explicitly canon, and also have it be pretty intrinsic to the narrative?
and like no, kris isn't entirely nonverbal, they do speak occasionally. but deltarune in general, and particularly ch4, paints a very strong picture of someone who (at least when they have control over their own voice) does not use words as their primary method of communication
like you can start with quiet people piss me off, or the fact that music is such an important avenue of self expression for them (made all the worse when they're not in control). noelle in ch1 asks if kris is okay when the player asks her the same background/lore questions we can ask everyone, because kris talking this much pings immediately as wrong to her. then there's everything we know about kris as a kid, and how yeah they had a bit of a mean sense of humor, but also pranks and fucking with people was a very good way for them to get attention without having to talk at all
noelle's story of the ferris wheel if you listen to all her and susie's dialogue in dess' room sticks out to me for this, and i really do love that anecdote. noelle mentions she and kris were pushed into riding the ferris wheel together as kids, she didn't really want to be there. and kris didn't say anything the whole time, for the first half they were just looking out the window. but then they decided to jump up and down and shake the entire capsule, and that's when they turned to noelle and smiled. susie goes "is that good or bad?" in response to that story and noelle says she doesn't know, but it's one of the things that gets kris' attention! and whether you believe that they were doing it to freak noelle out or because they also thought this was dumb and wanted to make it more fun for both of them (noelle isn't sure which it was either), that is how they communicate!
and when they do use words. this is the bit that makes me most emotional - noelle in weird route describes kris' voice as deadpan and mumbly. they don't like being loud, they don't talk very often, and they really struggle with inflection. all things that are normally criticisms when directed at autistic people, they're stuff autism moms use to justify their "i know my real child is in there somewhere" bullshit. but when noelle hears it again from soulless kris for the first time since the soul stuff started, she starts crying over how much she's missed hearing them talk. the soul (as we know from a variety of susie and noelle conversations) is louder, more charismatic, more confident and articulate, and it's not kris. so all those traits that are normally things autistic people get told to be more, are explicitly condemned by the narrative
and that's what makes kris being largely nonverbal such an excellent additional dimension to their story. because everything the soul does, at least in the normal routes, pretty much aligns with how people are expected to behave? kris under our control has a great social life, has friends, is likeable, isn't weird and hard to understand. and a crueler person, the kind autistic people have to deal with far too often, would say "well it's good we gave them a voice, they're not using theirs anyway"
but that's what makes it evil! it doesn't matter if kris is the kind of autistic that everyone hates, if there are things about them that don't fit in with society but that they either can't or don't want to change. their life and their voice, as infrequently heard as it is, is still theirs. and they deserve the freedom to use it however they want to

Work can't end fast enough
Domestic fluff with Jackson!Joel
Jackson!Joel x Reader
Rating: slightly nsfw (suggestive)
word count: 2.3k+
Summary: Joel wants to go back home to his wife but work keeps delaying him.
(Inspired by that episode of Modern Family where random stuff kept cockblocking Jay and Gloria lol)
────── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──────
It had been a hard month for the both of you. Not just hard in the way this world could be — not just chaos and survival. This was something else. The upsurge of new people in Jackson meant many things had to change in the town you loved, starting with the basic constructions that Joel oversaw. You, meanwhile, worked together with the council in charge of looking over the rations and quotas, as well as the living situation for these new arrivals. Moving around some old ones here and there, changing a rule or two, you looked it over with your diligent heart and a strong desire to give back to the community who had given you this life. One in which you could be privileged enough to worry about things like salt and sugar passing around rather than being another grave, unmarked and forgotten.
Your rubbed your tired eyes over your glasses,  one you and Joel took turns wearing. Your sight landed on your husband, hand on his hips, talking to the young men in charge of doing things he at his age could no longer. You smiled to yourself; he hated admitting that. Always preferred "Well, had to save somethin' for the youngins. Boosts morale."
It was adorable as much as it was concerning— how much extra work he would take up just to show you that he still got it, the man he met you as, the man you grew older with. Like you needed any convincing at all with how he lit the tendrils of desire inside you every time he looked your way. It would, however, always end with him taking extra rest days which you didn't complain, those days were your favorites: just the two of you, quiet and close, wrapped around each other in bed. Talking. Touching. Loving.
But the past month… well, the latter hadn’t happened as much as you would’ve liked. But you can't blame anyone, you two were just so busy. Most nights, you would come home and find him knocked out cold in the bed, his shoes not even off. And there were just as many nights you remember falling asleep on the couch and waking up in the bed, the other side cold and empty.
You missed him.
Joel turned his head to the window, as if he heard you thinking about him. When his eyes met yours he smiled. The kind that instantly made his face 10 times warmer. It melted you instantly. You missed his warmth.
He gave you a little wave, subtle, almost shy — careful not to let the boys notice, then turned back to his work, the stoic expression returning again.
You stand up abruptly from your desk. Housing meeting be damned, you were going to sleep with your husband.
-
"That ain't how ya mix concrete." Joel grumbles, grabbing the shovel from one of the boys. "Here, lemme show ya how it's done. Back in my day, we had this tool called—ah, forget it. Just watch how I do it."
"Your wife." The scrawny one mumbled.
"Whatd'ya say?" He frowns glancing up from his work. The biy nodded behind him. Joel whips his head back and there you are, walking towards him, arms wrapped around yourself. You give him a little smile, which feels private regardless of the 6 other pair of eyes on you.
He lets the shovel fall to the ground and walks on up to you.
"Hey, you alright?" He wipes at the ink smudge on your cheek. You have been working so hard. He would have told you how proud of you he is if he had any time. You look tired and god knows he looks like he could use some sleep. But he knows this town needs you and him. So he doesn't complain. Even though he misses you a lot. Going to sleep without asking you how your day was or waking up to a cold pillow was hell, even though his body got the message late he managed to take care of himself in the quiet moments in the shower, thinking of you.
You nod, "I am Joel. You have eyebags. I should be the one asking you."
He laughs softly, "You come 'round here just to make fun of me? I’ll have you know half that’s from worryin’ ‘bout you. Came home late last night?"
"Yes... this thing is taking more time than I thought. Wish I had a damn calculator that I didn't have to bump every other time I needed something new done."
"I'll tell the patrol team to look out for one next time."
"Joel?" You said softly.
"Hmm?"
You looked up at him, shy smile on your face. He recognized that look instantly; he felt blood rushing to a place quite inappropriate for the time and place. He felt stupid that this could even happen to him at this age. You could still make him feel like that.
"Think you can make it back home early tonight?" You paused. Joel remained quiet, wanting you to lead the moment. "I will try as well. Since, you know-"
His eyebrows shot up in a faux cluelessness. You smile, flustured.
"Well, I want you."
He couldn't help the smirk that followed, "That so?"
"A lot. Do you?"
"Hon, you got no idea—if it weren't for all these folks 'round us right now..." he shot a discreet glance back, "I'd have you backed up 'gainst that wall, lettin' you know exactly how I feel."
You feel your cheeks warm as you cough to cover it up, eyes darting to the teenagers behind him, trying way too hard to act uninterested in whatever you two were whispering. You gave Joel's shoulder a loud pat. "Alright Miller, get the job done." You leaned forward to give him a kiss on the cheek. "Don't make me wait." You added in a whisper, watching the familiar sparkle in his eyes return.
"Will do Mrs. Miller, I'll see you at home."
-
Joel could not have been faster if he had been 10 years younger. He made a mental list of the things he had to move along.
Laying foundation on this house.
Framing the house on that street.
Deliver blueprints to Tommy.
The list went on. Normally he would have found this therapeutic, going along the list one by one at the pace he liked.
But today, no. Today he was on a mission.
"Goddammit, give me that damn trowel!" He snatched the tool of the hand of the unfortunate fool who had the bad luck of being right in front of him. He wasn't doing nothing wrong, just was too goddamn slow. He bent down too quickly, knees cracking in a pop that had the younger man looking at him in concern. But Joel just continued on, quietly with a pace, the younger man couldn't help but admire.
"Quit starin' and grab the other one—get to work, we ain't got all day."
-
"Boy, I swear—if you turn that board one more time, I'm goin' to lose my damn mind. That ain't a puzzle, it's a board. Set it down and drill it!" Joel barked out.
"I'm just double-checking the marks, Joel. I don't wanna mess it up." The guy, Trevor, defended himself.
"I want that sill plate down and bolted by the time I return back from Tommy's—or so help me god, I'll put this whole frame up myself with one bad knee and a box of rusty nails."
"Woah Joel, chill out." Trevor looked over at the older man, "You got somewhere to be? Why you barking at me all of a sudden?"
Joel rubbed his forehead, exasperated. "My bad. Just get it done 'fore I'm back."
"Roger that." he chuckled.
-
"You okay Joel? You're all huffing and puffing. The stairs did a number on you?" Tommy chuckled, opening the door wider to his older brother. Joel just shot him a glare before shaking his head as he walked past him.
"Blueprints. Four houses—down the street. Need your signature here." He dropped the materials on the table and turned to his brother impatiently.
"Woah woah woah. Brother you just got here, sit down. You look like you'll blow up your lungs."
"Not today Tommy I just need you to get at that pen of yours-"
"Joel, wait." He grabs the prints from the table. "These need to laid over on top of the older print so we can tell where all the pipeline goes."
"Alright then you get on with it-"
"Yeah well I'm going to do this once I deliver these boxes to the canteen."
Joel exhaled hard through his nose. He glanced at the boxes — two of them, not that big — then back at Tommy like he was considering murder. "Give me the damn boxes."
"What? No, I got it—"
But Joel was already picking them up, one under each arm like they weighed nothing. "Ain’t got time to crawl through the day with you."
He was halfway out the door before Tommy could reply, boots thudding on the wood.
"What's with you getting all snippy on me?"
"Missus waiting." was all he said.
"C’mon now, don’t tell me you’re runnin’ off just ‘cause you miss her."
Joel stopped just outside the door, back still to him. "Got somewhere better to be, that’s all." And with that, he disappeared down the steps , quick, purposeful, stubborn as hell.
Tommy just shook his head, chuckling to himself. "Old man’s still got it bad."
-
He could not push open the door faster. He took off his work boots to the side carelessly.
"Honey I'm home." He hoped his eagerness didn't seep through too much. He looked forward to seeing you, the thought of you waiting here, warm and soft, laid out just the way you get... it made the work even more distracting to say the least.
He stepped into the room, his coat barely off his shoulder when his eyes caught to your hunched over a mess of paperwork on the table. You looked up at him, your eyes apologetic.
"Oh baby, I'm so sorry... I'll be done soon just—" you sighed, rubbing your forehead.
He walked over to you slowly. "It's alright my dear." He smiled softly, pulling a chair next to you. "Mind if I take a look?" You scooted your arm so that he could look over. "Gimme that." He gently took the glasses off your nose and put it on himself. "Let's see... hmm—" he rubbed along his chin looking over the papers carefully. "Deer this season, right right... dry rations look alright as well."
You watched him immerse himself in your work with a smile on your face. He looked so good like this. This was just how he was, making your life easier, a little more bearable, always finding a way to lighten your load. You leaned in to kiss his cheeks unable to help yourself. He smiled, eyes still reading the list carefully.
"Beans, rice... yes, in order." You kissed along his jaw now as he listed the items one by one, suddenly overcome by this desire to have as much of his space as possible.
"Wheat— fuck darlin'" he grunted as your hand slowly unbuttoned his shirt, slow and purposeful. your mouth still hungry on his neck.
"What?" You whispered along his neck during the little time you separated your mouth from him, "Don't act so coy now. Like I didn't see you barking orders all day today."
He turned his head slowly to you, wanting to catch your mouth. "Don't wanna tire ya out sweetheart, know you had a long day."
"What a gentleman," you smiled, biting your lips. "Never too tired for you." You wrapped your arms around his shoulders.
Joel turned fully, big hands anchoring your waist, pulling you closer, off the chair then finally to his lap. He pressed his mouth on you all desperate, like he was starving all day.
"God, I been thinkin’ ‘bout you all damn day... You can’t just show up at a man’s job, sayin’ you want him, like that ain’t the kinda thing that’ll knock a man clean off whatever he was doin’." He whispers gently between kisses.
"Maybe I wanted to knock you around a little." You smile, your practiced hands already getting rid of his shirt, fingers brushing skin like you know exactly where he needs to be touched.
"I was tryin’ to take it slow. Be respectable."
You laugh softly, brushing your nose against his. "When have you ever taken anything slow with me?"
He smirks, hand sliding around your waist. "First date. You had your hair down, in that god awful bar back in Boston."
You raise a brow. "You kissed me in that alley twenty minutes later."
Joel shrugs like that proves his point. "Felt slow at the time."
That makes you both laugh, heat and affection tangled up together. Then you shift your weight against him. You moan softly when you feel him below you. "I missed you so much." you murmur, all teasing melted into truth now, your voice quieter as your lips graze his neck.
He pauses for a second. "I missed you too." He says. It comes out quiet, earnest, like a truth he never says unless he means it down to the bone.
"Take me to bed cowboy."
He smirks, "and your work?"
"I gotta take care of you first."
He let out a quiet breath— not quite a laugh, more like a surrender. "Darlin’..." His voice was rough, cracked open at the edges.
You didn’t need more words.
Joel stood, arms firm under you, lifting you like you weighed nothing. Your legs wrapped around him instinctively as he carried you to your shared bed. Every step was steady, like this was the part of the day he trusted most— not the work, not the talk, just this.
At the foot of the bed, he paused for half a beat, forehead resting lightly against yours. His voice dropped lower than a whisper.
"Ain’t nothin’ more important than gettin’ home to you."
Then he laid you down gently.
And for the first time all day, Joel finally let himself slow down.

Also listen... I'm hesitant to talk about this just cause of my whole preferring not to talk too much about current events cause I know you all already know, but I gotta say something at at least... like for my own sake on this one
What happened in Boulder is terrible, and... I don't know... shouldn't even need saying, but with the amount of antisemitism I'm seeing these days I at least have to do the bare minimum and say that much
You don't get to kill people just because you disagree with them, even if they're truly horrible you don't
I've been worried about antisemitism on the left for years and... it's coming out in exactly the ways I was fearing all the way back in like 2015
You can criticize the Israeli government with being antisemitic, I actually think it's pretty easy. You say something like "I think it's wrong to bomb hospitals and I think Israel needs to stop", and I did that without having to bring up Jews at all
At a certain point you have to ask, are you fighting for peace? Are you fighting for an end to suffering and senseless death? ...cause I'm not so sure, with way too many people these days I'm just not so sure that's the major focus anymore
Grew up knowing a lot of Jewish people, so I'm not Jewish and at the end of the day I'm safe from any antisemitism... I'm not the one at risk here and any time I wanted I can just shut up and I'm not effected... I know that about me. But even though it's been so many years, was close to enough Jews growing up that antisemitism fucking eats at me, and I gotta say something
You've got people literally just... existing, living their lives... what the hell are you doing bothering Jews for?
Final closing thoughts?
You're not immune to antisemitism. I'm not immune to antisemitism. Even Jewish people aren't immune to it. None of us are immune to being bigoted or hateful. Just because you're coming at things from a good place, a place of love, a place of caring... it doesn't make you immune. In fact, a lot of times love is exactly what gets twisted around till it's a justification for horrible things. You've gotta be careful. Care more about protecting Gazans than hurting or punishing people... like they need help and we gotta do what we can
Second is that you can criticize a government without needing to rip in to everyone in a country. You got anything going on in your country that your government is doing that you don't like? ...yeah, those bastards kinda have a way of doing that, don't they?
Rip the hell into the Israeli government. I don't talk about much other than Ukraine, cause frankly I'm just way more informed on Ukraine and... I think I'm more at risk of saying something stupid than useful here, that's why I tend to shut the hell up, but I mean... Israel's military reminds me way too much of russia's and you have to understand to me there's few worse insults (it's the bombing hospitals that really does it)
But man... what's wrong with you if you're acting like every Jew in the world is responsible for the Israeli government? Not even every Israeli is responsible. They're not a monolith just like you're not a monolith with your government
Focus your anger on who deserves it and stop catching Jews in the crossfire (and if you already do that, then that's real good news to me)
Just seeing way too much antisemitism lately, and way way way too much of it on the left. I can't take it, I can take seeing that growing in my own backyard, you know? If I were gonna convert to anything, it would be Judaism, I feel a connection and I had a lotta friends growing up, so I can't take seeing all this shit
So sincerely, all I'm asking is you look at yourself and make sure you're not sliding into being hateful. That's it... and if look and think maybe you are... don't be doubling down out of shame, get that I'm here telling you that could be me too. There's a line that'll work on all of us if we're not careful, what matters is you catch yourself and work to do better
Anyway... haven't wanted to make this post cause I hate putting too much negative stuff on people's dash, but... man... I can't take it anymore and I gotta say something
Cause it eats at me
#and since I'm saying all this; I'll just add that... again; I'm not nearly as deeply informed on this as I am Ukraine#mostly cause... I can only take one atrocity at a time; it gets hard keeping up with all the death in Ukraine even#I just... I don't have it in me... it'll burn me out#so take what I'm about to say with that declaration#but from my perspective I don't think Egypt catches nearly enough flak for the role they play in this#like they share a border... they can let people out... but they don't; to my understanding they really don't#from what I can tell you need like $5000k to get in; and then you're not getting a work visa; that's what a lot of the fundraising is for#to get the money to even be let in (for the people where that's what they're trying to do; vs those just looking to try and eat)#they may not be the biggest player in this; they may not be the main actor or the cause#but... I think they're culpable; and I don't know that I personally have seen any criticism leveled at them#...but then again; I'm not informed; I'm really not; and I'm just laying that on the table#and that's not what this is about; it's just something that's been on my mind a long time#I hate... I know everyone's dash is filled with this nonstop every day#so I hate adding to it#but I just... I gotta fucking say something; I gotta say something about this#and if you ask 'why are you saying stuff about antisemitism and not about Gaza?'#well... one... I think I did in there; I think I made my stance pretty clear#but two... I told you... had a lot of Jewish friends growing up; and I gotta say at least something about the antisemitism I'm seeing#I see the couple Jewish mutuals I have talking about their stuff or sharing other Jewish users and#...man... my version is watered down#like all I'm asking man is that we support Gaza without being antisemitic... to me; that's not a tall ask#but I can tell it's pretty huge based on... based on shit I see... based on this attack

#so i started at a new job this week and i hate hate HATE this initial phase where i don't know how everything works#and i have no clue what my groups have been doing with their previous teacher and aaarghhgfgh fuck this shit#and i hate having to ask people about stuff and i hate being told that i can just ask anyone for help but like#these people all have their own jobs and i don't want to expect them to be able to help me right that second#and having to ask about things makes me feel so STUPID ugh#i messaged my colleague (who's responsible for my orientation but she's not at the workplace today or tomorrow) about something#and yeah she tried to help me but she also told me i can ''always ask x colleague about things like this as well''#like yes i know but he was nowhere to be seeeeeeeeen but okay thanks for making me feel like a helpless idiot lol#(YES I KNOW she didn't mean to of course!! i'm just being dramatic for the lols)#and i HATE how she keeps talking about this one task i need to do with one of my groups before christmas like#''this is a challenging task btw so don't hesitate to ask for help'' like. okay cool thanks for already making me feel like i'm gonna fail#which again i know is not her intention but. have some faith in me perhaps instead of _expecting_ it to be beyond my skill set??#like of course i get that she only means to make it easier for me to ask for help by saying this#instead of being all ''ah but you've got this!'' which might make me feel like i shouldn't ask for help#but is it really necessary for you to literally tell me that it's going to be challenging because now i'm stressing out about it#more than i normally would 🤡 the brain works in mysterious ways...

Top 10 posts customer service workers hate reading
very controversial opinion here, but sometimes customer service workers are the problem 😶
#once again reminded to be nice to the customers#reminds me of a time a customer wasn’t mean but was really overbearing and took like an hour to finish assembling his gift#admittedly a very nice gift for his mother#part of that hour was him coming back to the store and wrapping the box right in front of me#and he was doing such a terrible job i just ended up helping him anyway#i had to ask my boss to stop me if he came back because i couldn’t tell this guy to fuck off because he was being nice#but that kind of nice where you say stuff like oh i must be so annoying right now#yeah you are get out i wanna sit down#hate this post especially because i absolutely cant be mean at my job because most of the people who do get on my nerves are parents#who usually have their kids with them#and i always feel bad whenever i have to raise my voice at children or teenagers#like im not perfect and i know my shortcomings but what is this post achieving#not to mention being a little rude is normal we get angry for a reason thats why customer service workers put up with it#that and we need to keep our jobs and pay rent#and deal with 50 more customers for the rest of the day#but then again i guess that customer i got impatient with has to deal with 50 more cashiers today so tough world#I agree with op but its one of those things that is such a little problem compared to the other bigger problem#IM JUST BEING TOLD TO BE NICE AGAIN#if you made it this far you should read Bright-sided by Barbara Ehrenreich#its about toxic positivity in the united states#like why is everyone in this country so opposed to being upset#dont get me started on food service#which is already a high stress environment#with most of the staff in kitchen not even getting the opportunity to have a word with customers#and the ones that do are usually teenagers anyway who should not be judged for giving attitude#like i started these tags from the mind of a retail employee#but now i remember i worked in food service#some of the nastiest stuff you hear from people day to day isnt even from customers but your coworkers#who may have to pick up your slack if you fall behind whether thats your fault at all#anyway cool sentiment but this post reeks of i-never-worked-a-customer-service job or i-did-but-im-complicit-in-worker-suffering

I don’t know, I’m kind of frustrated about it, though! Because for once I wanted to make a decision that was entirely mine, not calculated to keep my family happy. And staying, even if I’m working towards a different qualification, feels like I’m trying to placate them. You’d think I’d have outgrown this nonsense.
#personal#and I can’t stand being told ‘it’s up to you’ because I’ve heard that before#and when I make the ‘wrong’ decision there’s always hell to pay for it#you know… okay I don’t really tell people about this but apparently I’m treating tumblr like a confessional today#I probably SHOULDN’T and I’m not asking for sympathy I’m just trying to explain#when I was 14 a friend asked my to sleep over at hers#*me#I said yes but didn’t really want to go#and my mother was like ‘you don’t have to! I’ll text the other girl’s mum and make some excuse!’#and she was being really nice and friendly about#so I said ‘yes thank you!! that would be great!’#and I swear I SAW the switch flip#and she started screaming about how I was evil and didn’t deserve to have friends and no wonder no one liked me#and I was terrified so I was like ‘oh I’m sorry I’ll go don’t send the text’#but she was like ‘no I wouldn’t inflict YOU on other people anyway’#and then she grabbed my wrist and pulled me down the hallway to the front door#it was dark and raining really heavily and she opened the door and yelled at me to get out#and I was just like. scared and confused lmao. so I stood there crying and apologising until she finally shut the door#and told me to get out of her sight. then she didn’t speak to me for a day or so then acted like nothing happened#it think she might have made a joke about it#anyway she did this kind of thing semi-regularly to the point where I hated weekends because I knew I’d say SOMETHING to set her off#and she never really acknowledged it. I think she stopped when she realised I was old enough to fight back (I mean it wasn’t ever physical#but you know) but like this stuff carried on until I was nearly 20#I’m sure it wasn’t easy to raise a then-undiagnosed autistic child but even so. I was probably difficult but still.#like I’d say something and then she’d be in my face and yelling and I never knew what I did#it’s kind of funny. when I was 17/18 two of my teachers kind of figured out what was going on#after she came in for a parents evening thing and it became clear I was scared and she had no problem yelling at me in public#and they basically promised they wouldn’t ever say anything to her about my schoolwork without running it by me#like they KNEW but they also knew there was nothing to be done 🤷‍♀️#my friends knew too. and like. when I was off school for a few days with a virus they thought she’d done something to me

The Art Of Make-believe Matrimony
Logan Howlett x fem!reader
Tumblr media
Summary: You can’t stand each other, so it’s a mystery to you and Logan why you’re sent out together on an assignment. To make it worse, you’d have to act much closer than you really were.
Warnings:  mutant!reader (no specific power mentioned, though), fem!reader, enemies to lovers, swearing,  fake dating (technically fake marriage), mentions of violence, a little bit of suggestive stuff, a little bit of fluff i guess, and mild alcohol consumption. I think that's all but if i missed any, please let me know! also this is def loosely inspired by the movies 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' and '10 Things I Hate About You'
Word Count: 5K
part 2
・˳ . ⋆ .˳⁺⁎˚ ⋆・˳ . ⋆ .˳⁺⁎˚ ⋆・˳ . ⋆ .˳⁺⁎˚ ⋆・˳ . ⋆ .˳⁺⁎˚ ⋆・˳ . ⋆ .˳⁺⁎˚ ⋆・˳ .
You hate the way he dresses.
You hate his stupid hair.
You hate the pet names he calls you.
You hate his voice.
You hate his hazel eyes.
You hate his smile.
You hate Logan Howlett.
It was no secret and neither was the fact that he couldn’t stand you either. You bickered like a married couple, constantly fought till you bled when you were training and couldn’t go a day without one of you insulting the other. Truthfully, it was probably because you were too alike - fire versus fire - and knew exactly how to press each other's buttons.
That’s why you were both confused when you stood in Charles’ office - dumbfounded expression on your faces - as he told you that he assigned you to a mission together.
“Oh, no way,” you nearly laughed, thinking it was a joke.
“Yeah, not happening,” Logan agreed. It may have been the only thing you’ve ever agreed on.
“That’s unfortunate for both of you, as I am sending you anyway. You are the only capable people that aren’t already out on an assignment or teaching a class full time.”
“How do you expect us to do it without killing each other?” you raised your eyebrows.
“You are adults. I trust you will navigate that on your own.”
Logan scoffed beside you, his arms crossed over his chest.
You sighed, closing your eyes in frustration and biting the bullet, “what do we have to do?”
“There is a safe hidden in the home of a very wealthy socialite who’s been involved in orchestrating attacks on mutants - injecting them with a serum that replaces their mutation gene with that of a normal human,” Charles began to explain.
Your chest felt heavy. It always made you anxious and a little ill when you’d hear the stories of people who hated you so much that they’d go as far as to harm or violate you in some way, all in the name of trying to rid the earth of you completely or turn you into one of them.
“The only known sample of the serum is locked in that safe,” he continued, “and I will need you to retrieve it. You are to infiltrate a gathering being held in her home, obtain the contents of the safe and return promptly.”
“So, we’re…going to a party?” Logan asked with one eyebrow raised.
“A dinner party,” Charles replied, “and another thing - you must not attend as yourselves. You’ve been invited on the good word of another guest - someone we trust - but you’ve been invited as a married couple to avoid arousing suspicion.”
He must’ve been getting some sick enjoyment from this.
“Married couple,” you repeated, your eyes narrowed, “Us. You want us to pretend to be a couple.”
“What, do I have to like - touch her? I’m not doing that,” Logan piped up.
“Oh, i’m so disappointed,” you rolled your eyes, sarcasm clear in your voice, “Fuck off.”
“You fuck off.”
“No, you fuck off.”
“No, you.”
“I said it first!”
“Enough,” Charles interrupted, “you will be attending as Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”
“Huh,” Logan hummed, “that’s creative.”
“Its inconspicuous,” he replied.
“What are our first names, then?”
“You have creative liberty. I trust you will come up with something just as unremarkable.”
“How about Sid and Nancy?” you scoffed, chuckling a little in disbelief.
“Does that mean I get to stab you?”
“You’d miss.”
Charles had his head in his hands.
“How about Jack and Jill?”
You both turned your heads to him when he spoke, pausing the back and forth between you that you were sure to continue later. You glanced at Logan and shrugged, indifferent to the names.
“That’ll work,” Logan mirrored your actions.
“Lovely. Tomorrow evening at five. I will have the address ready. In the meantime, here,” he opened his palm and placed two rings on the table, “these are your wedding bands.”
You huffed and took the smaller of the two, Logan picking up the plain silver band. Yours was simple - a false diamond in the middle and two smaller ones on each side.
“What, you couldn’t get me anything bigger?” you joked to Logan, holding up the ring.
“Oh, you want somethin’ big?”
Your eyes went wide and you elbowed him in the arm, groaning in disgust, “Gross.”
—----------------
Five o’clock came fast, your nerves seemingly increasing the speed of time. You’d made a mess of your wardrobe looking for something to wear that was comfortable, but not too ‘you’. What would a rich person wear to a dinner party? How the hell were you supposed to know?
Some nice pants, a blouse and complimenting shoes would have to do - it was the only thing you had that looked relatively formal. Adding some jewelry made it just a little more convincing.
You went down the stairs to meet Logan at the front door, dreading the coming hours. You turned the corner and finally saw him, leaned against the wall with his hands in his pockets. He wore a white t-shirt tucked into his jeans, his boots, and he’d traded his usual leather jacket for a suit jacket. He actually cleaned up pretty nice, but you weren’t gonna tell him that.
He heard your footsteps and turned towards the sound. He could feel the sweat starting to form at the back of his neck.
He’d never seen you in anything nice like that - you never really had any occasions to dress up for - and he hated how much he liked it. Your pants hugged you perfectly, your blouse was buttoned low and you even had on a little bit of makeup.
“You don’t look too bad,” he managed to comment, opening the door for you.
“That’s probably the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me,” you realized aloud, the both of you heading towards Logan’s truck, “You look alright.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Smith.”
“You’re welcome, Mr. Smith.”
He opened the car door for you, uncharacteristically gentlemen-like.
You shot him an odd look and got in anyway.
“I’m practicing,” He explained, shutting your door and walking around to slide into his seat, “can’t have anyone thinkin’ I’m a shit husband.”
“Good luck.”
“Uh-oh,” Logan had an amused expression, his eyes glued to the road as you began moving, “that’s not wife behavior, sunshine.”
“Bite Me.”
He clicked his tongue, “Feisty. Oh - I can use that when people ask about us! I’ll say it's one of your absolute worst qualities that any man would be repulsed by, but that our love is blind.”
You scoffed, “Great, and I’ll get to tell them you spend sixteen hours brushing your hair into cat ears and shed all over the bathroom like an animal.”
“See - now, that one seems a little personal.”
“It is.”
“Just pretend for a night that I’m the man of your dreams, okay?” he asked, “pretend I’m, uh - I don’t know, some celebrity guy you have a crush on.”
You were silent for a second, engrossed in thought, “you look nothing like Hugh Jackman.”
“Who? You know what - sure, pretend I'm him, alright? Just squint.”
Truthfully - and you’d rather be stabbed than admit it - Logan wasn’t far off from who you could picture yourself with. Strong, kind of handsome, good with kids. He was humble, most of the time. He was just terribly annoying and way too cocky.
It wasn’t long before he was shifting the truck into park and yanking the keys from the ignition. You let him open your door and walked beside him up the front steps.
“You ready, Jack?” you teased.
“Ready as I’ll ever be, Jill.”
He rang the doorbell and you stood awkwardly, eyes scanning your surroundings. The house was huge - probably only a bit smaller than the mansion - and modern, something probably built in the last ten years. The front lawn was impeccable, as were the marble statues strategically placed between foliage and flora.
The door opened and you inhaled sharply, trying to prepare yourself to lie your ass off.
“Hello! You must be Mr. and Mrs. Smith! So lovely to meet you, please - come in,” a woman ushered you in, her neck and ears decorated in pearls. You recognized her immediately, Charles having shown you both a picture of the hostess beforehand. You politely greeted her and introduced yourselves, already scanning the room for an emergency exit in case things went sour.
“So,” she continued talking, leading you to sit in the living room with the other mingling guests,”tell me a little about yourselves! John wasn’t very descriptive when he mentioned you. What do you do for work?”
Whoever John was, you silently thanked him.
“Uh, well,” you began, nervously glancing at Logan, “I’m a bank teller.”
Plain, boring, inconspicuous,
She then looked to Logan expectantly, awaiting his answer.
“Cage fighter.”
Jesus Christ. You were glaring daggers into the side of his smiling face and he pretended not to notice.
“Really?” the woman in front of you inquired, a hand on her chest. You watched her eyes scan him up and down, landing on the pecs prominent through his shirt. You scoffed out of instinct, faking a cough to cover it up.
‘Oh, yeah. Undefeated MMA champ.”
You looked away to hide the scowl on your face when your eyes locked on the vodka bottle sitting on the table a few feet away with a collection of other booze. Bingo.
“Will you excuse me for just a moment?” you smiled politely and walked away before Logan could protest, leaving him to his own devices.
You twisted the top off the bottle and picked up a glass, filling it with Vodka and some soda that was left on the table. You almost walked away with it, planning to keep it in your hands until you felt your nerves subside, until you remembered you were supposed to be a wife. Wives brought their husbands drinks, right? Not doing so would look rude and rude might blow your cover. So, you reluctantly picked up another glass and filled it partially with whiskey, knowing it was something he’d drink. You happened to glance across to the kitchen and notice a neat little rack of spices and condiments on the counter. A bottle of soy sauce was front and center, like a message from the universe, and you giggled to yourself as you snatched the bottle and hid it up your sleeve - this could be a good night if you made it entertaining.
You returned to Logan with both glasses, handing him the one filled with significantly darker liquid. He looked a little surprised but accepted it anyway.
“Thank you, sweetheart,” he said with narrowed eyes, a look that asked ‘what are you up to now?’
You simply nodded in acknowledgement, smiling at the hostess still standing in front of you.
“She’s a keeper,” he continued, holding the glass up to his mouth, “ always knows exactly what I like.”
You bit back a snicker as you watched him tilt the glass and finally take a sip.
His eyes went to yours immediately.  He pulled the glass from his lips, mouth still obviously full of whiskey and soy sauce. If looks could kill, you’d be long dead.
“Good, honey?” you smiled wide then, taking a sip of your own drink.
“Mhm,” he hummed, clearly fighting a grimace. He swallowed and nearly gagged, coughing into his fist, “mhm, just a little strong.”
“Oh,” the hostess began, “Jack was just about to tell us how you met!”
A couple of guests had gathered in the same spot, all lingering in a semicircle. Logan was quite the charmer and it wasn’t a surprise that he already had a couple of women gawking at him, hanging on his every word as if any of it was true.
“Was he?” your tone was shrill but you attempted to appear playful, lightly smacking him on the arm, “Oh, honey, you should really let me tell it.”
Whatever he was about to come up with, you hoped it was not in the same outlandish category as cage fighting. Before you could begin, though, he dismissively waved his hand in your direction.
“No, no - you’re a little forgetful, sweetheart,” his grin was mischievous as he turned to speak to the surrounding guests, “so, it all started with a tshirt competition at a bar where the girls had to - “
“Nope! Nope,” you interjected, doing your best to keep your tone light and shaking your head, “haha - that must have been another girl, honey!”
That earned a few chuckles from the guests around you and you took the opportunity while everyone's attention was on you to try and spin a tale of your own.
“So, we actually met a couple years ago,” you started, mulling over what true details to sprinkle in or if you should make it up entirely, “uh - in a library.”
It wasn’t entirely untrue. You’d been at the mansion for a couple days before you bumped into him in the library while gathering books to try and put together your first lesson plan. You had a cup of coffee in one hand and a stack of books in the other - admittedly stupid - but you’d always been careful. Except for that once.
You had a book open in your arms, resting atop the stack you already gathered. You were walking and reading - again, admittedly not very smart - when you bumped into someone, spilling coffee on both of you and sending the stack of books to the floor with an audible thump.
“Fuck, sorry -” you began to apologize, finally looking up to the strangers face. It was Logan, of course, though you didn’t know that at the time. You remember thinking he was handsome with his scruffy mutton chops and well groomed hair - until he opened his mouth.
“What the hell is wrong with you, kid?”
You knew it was partially your fault but were irked by his attitude.
“Dude, you weren’t paying attention either, obviously!” you snapped back, looking down at the beige stain now adorning your white button up.
“I’m not the one who carries coffee and a shit ton of books at the same time.”
“Whatever.”
That was your grand introduction, neither of you even exchanging names.
Logan remembered it about the same way you did, though the version he tells is a little different. He loved to tell people that when you bumped into him, it was because you were so lovestruck that you just walked right into him. The part he always left out, though, was the first thing he thought when he saw you. He’d scolded you before even looking up to see who you were and when he had, he wished he’d reacted a little differently.
You were beautiful, even with coffee spilt all over yourself. You looked like a girl he’d only ever dreamed of, all the way down to the color of your hair and eyes. Unfortunately, he’d already been an asshole. So, from then on, that was basically your shtick - bickering over little things, calling each other names - all to the amusement of everyone around you. It wasn’t meant to be funny, but it was obvious to everyone else that the kind of teasing you did was only because you had feelings for one another - like two elementary school kids - and neither one of you seemed to know how to approach it. The mask would slip sometimes for either one of you - when he’d place a hand on your lower back, the times he’d managed to pin you to the mat during training - and you’d always find yourself staring at the ceiling that night, overthinking every interaction you’d had until the sun came up. He was never any better off, pacing in his room to try and decipher what the hell it was he actually felt for you.
Anyway, you decided to stick to the real story, minus the part where you insulted each other.
“We bumped into each other, literally, and I had coffee and a bunch of books in my arms. So, I drop the books, coffee spills everywhere - of course. Then I looked up at him, and..” you paused, the truth caught in a lump in your throat.
“And it was love at first sight,” Logan added, grinning down at you, “for both of us.”
His eyes were trained on yours and he continued to contribute to the story.
“The second I saw her, I fell in love.”
He was still looking at you. Why was he still looking at you like that? You were supposed to be husband and wife, right, but he was leaning into it far heavier than you expected. It felt like you were the only ones in the room.
A couple ‘aw’s were shared between guests and you smiled politely at the reminder that you were in fact not the only people in the room. As the conversation switched to another topic and someone else began to speak, you felt Logan’s hand at the back of your head, gently playing with your hair. Your face was pink - he was being too nice.
A short while later, you were sitting on the couch beside him, listening to someone’s drawn out story that you stopped paying attention to after six minutes.
“I’m gonna go take a piss,” Logan uttered unceremoniously and stood from the couch. He disappeared into the house and not even a minute later, another guy came to sit in his spot.
“Hey,” he put his arm around the back of the couch, his fingertips brushing your shoulder, “I don’t think we’ve met.”
You looked at the fingers grazing your shoulder and sat forward to shrug them off, “nope.”
He told you his name and you couldn’t have cared any less, deciding to actually tune back into the story being told rather than converse with him. He was alright looking, but his approach was far too off putting.
“So, did you come alone?”
You rolled your eyes at his question, opening your mouth to answer before he cut you off.
“Cause It looks like it, and I can’t stand to see a pretty girl alone.”
You groaned in disgust, hoping if you were dry enough in your answers, he’d leave you be.
“mhm.”
It wasn’t really an answer to anything, just a noise of affirmation. You hoped he’d get the hint then, but of course, he didn’t. In what would probably be the stupidest thing he’d done that night, the guy moved his arm from the back of the couch so he could squeeze your thigh. Right as you were about to tell him to fuck off, you saw a hand grip his shoulder from behind. Logan was leaning over the sofa, bringing his face a little lower so he wouldn’t cause a scene, his dog tags hanging when he leaned forward. He had a death grip on the guy's shoulder while he used his other hand to steady himself against the sofa.
“Hey, bub.”
The guy looked a little terrified, to say the least, but Logan didn’t let up there.
“Do you always go around hittin’ on people’s wives? Or is it just mine?”
His eyes were wide and he looked like he wanted to run but that wasn’t going to happen as long as he was in his grip.
“I-I didn’t, uh, I didn’t know she - “ the guy sputtered, trying to nervously laugh it off.
“Mhm. Hey, tell you what - why don’t you leave my girl alone and maybe I’ll give you a five minute head start to get the fuck out of here.”
He let go of his shoulder and that was enough to drive him away, the guy scurrying to his feet and finding somewhere else to mingle.
You didn’t know why you found yourself smiling the moment he’d said ‘my girl’. You rid yourself of it with a shake of your head, reminding yourself you were there to do a job.
“Hey,” Logan leaned himself down even further so he could whisper, “I gotta show you something, c’mere.”
You quirked an eyebrow at him but got up to follow. He stopped in the hallway in front of the bathroom, looked around to see if anyone would notice you, and promptly dragged you in with him before closing and locking the door. He hit the light switch and you looked around.
“Do you always take girls to the bathroom on first dates?” you teased, crossing your arms.
“You’d have to go out with me to find out,” he remarked, “besides, it’s not like that. Look.”
You watched him get low to the ground to open the cupboard under the sink and you crouched with him, following his pointing finger to the wood paneling in the back. It looked like a fake back - a board that appeared to be the back of the cabinet but definitely had something behind it. There was a sliver of metal visible behind it when you shined your phone’s flashlight.
“I figured we should look everywhere, so while I was in here I was checking it out - saw that. You think that’s it?”
“Could be,” you answered honestly, “that, or it’s some sort of electrical box we’re about to rip out of the wall. It’s an odd hiding spot for a safe.”
“Not really. Think about it - where's the first place you’d look for a safe?”
“Bedroom or office, maybe.”
“Right, and where's one of the last places you’d check?” he gestured to the open cabinet.
“Under…the sink,” you realized aloud, looking between him and the wooden board.
“Exactly,” he nodded, swiping the contents of the cabinet onto the floor to gain access, “here’s the thing, though - I’m too big to get in there.”
He could maybe stick his head in, but in order to duck under the pipes from the sink, he’d need to have shoulders that were much less broad.
You sighed, knowing what that meant.
“Alright, alright - move. This better be it.”
You reluctantly crawled under the sink and into the cabinet on your hands and knees. You yanked the wooden board with all your strength and it came free, revealing a metal safe.
“Got it! You were right, it’s the safe.”
Logan simply hummed in response, clearing his throat. You figured he’d be a little more enthusiastic.
Truthfully, he was too busy staring at your ass in the nice pants you were wearing to pay attention. When he heard your voice, he shook his head, as if to rid himself of the thoughts he was having about you so he could think of a response. He’d always thought you were beautiful, but seeing you all dressed up drove him a little crazy.
“Yeah? Is it locked?”
You inspected the metal box, holding the absurdly large padlock hooked around the latch that opened the door.
“Uh-huh. Padlock - we’re gonna need the numbers.”
“No, we don’t. Bring it out.”
You did as you were told, crawling back out with the safe under your arm and placing it on the bathroom rug. It was a pretty small one - probably a little bigger than a basketball.
Logan picked it up and set it on the counter beside the sink. He unsheathed a claw and sliced through the metal latch that held the door closed in one swift motion.
“Well, yeah - that's one way to do it,” you shrugged.
“Easiest way to do it.”
He reached in and took out the small glass vial. He put it inside the pocket of his suit jacket.
“What if it falls out?” you asked.
“It won’t.”
“How do you know?”
“Alright, kid,” he sighed, “what do you want me to do with it? ‘Cause i’m sure as hell not lettin’ you carry it.”
You rolled your eyes and looked him over.
“How about you wrap it in your jacket, like cushioning?”
“Fine.”
He reluctantly shrugged off his jacket, keeping the vial in the pocket but folding the jacket into a ball. You hastily replaced everything in the cabinet, safe included, and you followed Logan as he opened the door to step out - only to be met with another guest, her fist raised to knock.
“Oh! Dear,” she chuckled, clearly a little startled. She looked to the both of you, a grin appearing on her face, “Young love, what a gift. Don’t worry, I didn't see a thing!”
You shot her a confused look, chuckling nervously before you happened to catch a glance of your reflection in the bathroom mirror.
Your hair was mussed and your blouse was untucked on one side from having to bend up and down. Logan had taken off his suit jacket and you realized what it was she was implying.
“Oh, oh - we weren’t -”
“It’s alright, honey,” she responded as you stepped out, “like I said - my lips are sealed.”
She shot you both a wink, went into the bathroom and shut the door.
“She thought we were fucking in there,” you mumbled, eyes wide in embarrassment.
“Is that so bad?”
You snapped your head towards him, a confused look on your face, “what?”
Logan shrugged, “we're supposed to be husband and wife, aren't we?”
You shook your head in disbelief and decided to ignore him, both of you joining the other guests back in the living room. Dinner was finally ready and everyone took their seats in the dining room. There were a couple of things on the table you couldn’t even pronounce.
“Is that…meat? A vegetable?” you leaned over to logan, whispering behind your hand and nodding towards one of the dishes.
“Hell if I know,” he muttered, “I don’t think I wanna find out.”
You both piled on the few things onto your plates, poking at it with your forks.
“Do you wanna get a pizza after this?” you whispered.
“Definitely,” he replied, pushing around an unrecognizable sludge with his utensil.
“So, how long did you two say you’ve been together?” You both looked up, only to be met with the hostess’ stare. You had never mentioned how long you’d been ‘together’. Her smile was polite but her stare was piercing, as if she knew something she was not supposed to.
“About three years,” you replied, looking to him for back up.
“We got married a couple months in,” he added, grinning at you. Again, he had that look - like he wasn’t just pretending to be in love with you.
“We were in this restaurant - this little place we go to all the time,” he kept talking, “and I just told her I thought she was beautiful, that I wanted to be with her for the rest of my life.”
“Really? I have to say,” she began, sipping from her glass,” for a young couple who got together so quickly, you two don’t seem very affectionate towards each other.”
Shit. Shit, shit, shit.
You shot Logan a panicked look, but he appeared unbothered.
“Ah,” he clicked his tongue,” it’s this rule she’s got about PDA. I’d be all over her if I could.”
You hated the way your face became hot. You couldn’t tell if he was leaning into it to be convincing or flirting just to make you flustered. You heard a muffled snicker from somewhere across the table and your eyes shifted to the source - it was the woman from earlier, the one who’d thought you and Logan were getting busy in the bathroom.
“Can I at least get a kiss, babe?” Logan cooed, a smug look on his face.
“What are you doing?” you whispered, eyes wide.
“Being a husband,” he replied in a hush voice.
It all happened within seconds. His hands cupped your face, warm and soft, and he leaned in to plant a kiss right on your lips. It was gentle and you melted into his touch, kissing him back. When he pulled away, you were still stunned, your lips parted in surprise.
Logan kissed you.
His lips tasted like the remnants of cigar smoke. His touch was nearly intoxicating, like you were drunk off just the way he held you. You inhaled sharply and finally turned your face out of his grip, eyes glued to the table cloth. You had almost forgotten where you were - feeling like the room was spinning - and you let out a nervous laugh.
The topic of discussion moved on quickly and it seemed like any suspicion the hostess had about either of you had dissipated. You and Logan decided to say your goodbyes immediately after dinner, making some excuse about having to wake up early the next morning. When you stepped out and he shut the door behind him, you couldn’t hold your tongue any longer.
“What the hell was that?” you spat, eyebrows knitted.
“What was what?”
He was completely nonchalant as he continued to walk next to you towards his truck.
“You kissed me.”
“I did.”
“You didn’t have to.”
He stopped with you at the passenger side of the truck, standing in front of the door so you couldn’t get in.
“What if I wanted to?”
You swallowed hard. It was dead silent outside, save for the chirping of crickets.
“What?”
“I wanted to,” he admitted, chewing his bottom lip, “I wanted to kiss you.”
You didn't know what to say. He hated you, didn’t he?
“Logan, I - “
“You can’t tell me you didn’t feel anything in there, pretending to be together.”
His voice almost sounded strained, like he was pleading.
“You don’t even like me, you hate me,” you deflected, but he shook his head.
“That’s not true. I never hated you. I figured you’d hate me after I acted like an asshole when we met, so I went with it. I don’t hate you. I think you’re funny, I think you’re pretty - I just never really knew how to tell you that.”
When you only stared in response, he moved aside and opened your door with a defeated sigh. You were still speechless but you hesitantly slid into the seat anyway, letting him close the door. When he got into the driver's side and started the ignition, you couldn’t stop looking over at him.
“So, you like me,” you finally said aloud.
He kept his eyes glued to the road when he responded in a low voice, “why do you think I bother you so much?”
“You pick on me because you like me? Like a little kid?” you couldn’t help the amusement in your voice as your confused expression turned to a smile.
You saw him bite back a smile that mirrored yours, shaking his head.
“I guess you could say that.”
“Well, you’re not too bad, you know, and I guess you’re kind of handsome.”
“Oh, really?”
“Mhm, but don’t make me take it back.”
The rest of the short ride home was spent in comfortable silence, both of you seemingly trying to figure out where you’d go from there. When Logan parked his truck and got out, he came around your side to open your door. You hopped out and he shut the door for you, but grabbed your hand before you started to walk away.
“Hey, c’mere for a second.”
You let him pull you a little closer, intertwining both your hands. The evening air was chilly and you could see his breath in the air when he spoke.
“Can I kiss you, for real this time?”
You could feel your heart beating fast and you nodded eagerly. The second you did, his lips were already on yours. His hands let go of yours to settle in your hair, threading the strands between his fingers. His touch felt warm in comparison to the cold air and you leaned further into him with your hands gripping his jacket to pull him close. When he pulled away, he rested his hands on your waist and planted another kiss on your forehead.
“Maybe we could, uh, try again,” he cleared his throat, running his hands up and down your sides, “be nice to each other this time.”
Truthfully, you couldn’t hate Logan, even though you tried.
You couldn’t hate his perfect hair.
You couldn’t hate his sweet voice.
You couldn’t hate his kind smile.
You couldn’t hate the way he dressed.
You just couldn’t hate Logan Howlett.
So, you kissed him again, smiling against his lips and letting him hold you as close as possible, almost lifting you off the ground with his arms around you.
“We should probably go inside, huh?” you mumbled when you leaned back, lightly scratching the mutton chops on the side of his face in an affectionate manner. Those were another thing you’d pretended to hate - probably because you were embarrassed to admit you thought he pulled them off well.
“As you wish, Mrs. Smith.”
He held his hand out for you to take and you did, eyeing the ring on your finger.
“You know,” you held up your hand to show him the jewelry, “I think i’ll keep this.”
He grinned, bringing your knuckles to his lips and leaving a chaste kiss, “I think i'll keep mine, too.”
You were both still holding hands when you went inside, blushing like two little kids. You were so engrossed in one another that you didn’t notice Jean and Ororo in the hallway ahead of you as he leaned down to kiss you again. Now that he knew he could actually do it, he couldn’t help himself.
“I’ll take it your night went well,” Ororo giggled, Jean doing the same. You jumped a little in surprise, covering your pink face in mild embarrassment.
“What changed? I thought you hated each other,” the latter of the two asked.
“Eh, he’s not so bad,” you teased, shrugging your shoulders.
‘’Turns out, we make a pretty good fake husband and wife,” he explained, “I guess we got a little too carried away with it.”
As the two of you walked hand in hand further down the hall, Ororo elbowed Jean lightly, leaning over to whisper behind her hand.
“You owe me twenty bucks.”

I was like 11-12 years old when I figured out at a boring-ass church activity that you could put rocks into little plastic spoons and then pelt people who annoyed me with them. I did this for the rest of the activity, and at Sunday dinner the next night was bragging about my victory (cornering the mean kid who picked on my youngest brother and pelting him with rocks). One of my cousins was like “no way, that sounds SO fun! Let’s do that RIGHT NOW!” So we grabbed spoons and went and got pebbles from the back yard and launched them at each other.
The problem was my grandma sold her soul for the world’s most resilient plastic spoons so we could launch those fuckers HARD. I gave out welts like candy on Halloween, and I got them back in kind.
So we resorted to taking cover and giggling until we got whacked, then yelping, then returning fire.
My cousin hid in my grandpa’s little fishing boat. It was a good boat, but simple and honestly underused. We didn’t know the little windows on it, meant to keep the wind out of my grandpa’s face while he drove, were cracking. However, they were definitely cracking. Eventually it became obvious and we realized we had been being dumb.
This was NOT the first time in my life I’d been dumb roughhousing and broken something, and I had developed a reputation in my family as being “suicidally honest” so I was the one to deliver the bad news. My grandpa let out a pretty good chuckle and said it was OK, tousled my hair, and asked my grandma to bring me cake. I am not kidding. I learned later he hated his boat and only bought it for his kids’ sakes, since he thought everyone needed to know how to fish. At the time though I was just bewildered and pleased at my good fortune. FINALLY, at long last, being honest and telling the truth about breaking something expensive was getting me cake. I knew if I kept trying it would eventually serve me, and now so had CAKE. I was pleased as could be.
My dad, on the other hand, was livid. He LOVED that boat. He spent several weeks each summer recovering from breaking ribs in that boat every year for about 7 years prior to this incident. He had great memories and memories that boat. So he told my Grandma NO cake for me AND that I’d be coming by this weekend to fix stuff around the house and pay for the broken window with my babysitting/lawn mowing money.
Obviously I was devastated, but that felt more in-line with the way things normally went when I broke something expensive so I just figured it was OK. My grandpa gave my grandma a look and sadly said “Ok, have her here on Saturday to help me with some yard work.”
That Saturday my dad woke me up at 6:00 sharp and drove me, sleepy and bewildered, to my grandpa’s house. He was mumbling under his breath the whole time but he thought he was teaching me consequences for my actions so he was ultimately OK with it.
We get to my grandpa’s house at 6:15. My grandpa is outside with a ladder hanging Christmas lights. The lawn is freshly mowed, the trees and garden are weeded and well-tended to, the carnations in the front yard look immaculate, and my grandpa has this giddy mischievous look on his face. He tells me he was so excited that I was coming over that he couldn’t sleep, so he did all the yard work himself. He asked me to help him put up Christmas lights and decorate the Christmas tree, which I did, then said that because I was such a good helper I could have some pancakes for breakfast. I was sent home with the slice of cake I had been denied the week before, wrapped to keep it as fresh as possible.
The whole way home my dad looked a little miffed, but told me that he was glad I had been honest and was proud of me for helping grandpa. I know he wanted me to Learn a Lesson™️the cowboy way, like he had as a kid, but didn’t have much room to complain since I’d still been Put To Work.
I think that was a lesson for both of us, although I’m not totally sure what it was supposed to show me. I think it was my grandpa’s way of showing my dad that discipline without tenderness doesn’t count as much. He died last year and I miss him terribly, as does my dad. I hope that my story of victory, drama, punishment, and ultimately a secret second victory is meaningful to someone else out there, but if not it still means a lot to me ❤️

BANG BANG BANG
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
summery - thanos was always just such an easy person to argue with. you really hated the guy and that was something that was never going to change, even if your life was on the line and it fucking was.
pairing: (thanos) choi su-bong x fem. reader
word count: 1.8k
contains: violence, death, dark content - just usual squid game stuff really
prev. l next.
Tumblr media
"I ask for your attention. The first game will begin shortly. Each player will have their picture taken, then they will follow the staff onto the pitch."
You eyed the confusing and pastel-colored building you were standing in as you listened to the instructions. It wasn't too loud although, there was a bit of whispering from the crowd, the line to the photo booths was pretty organized as well. That was until you suddenly noticed a commotion from a corner, and look who was at the center of it. You just rolled your eyes when you saw the purple-headed guy standing casually between his fans and looked away annoyed after he winked at you charmingly.
Thanos didn't let your subtle rejection bother him. He called out your name and gestured with his fingers to indicate that there was an empty spot next to him - you know, for the group photo. "Hey, you can join the photo, too. Come on."
You continued to ignore his voice and moved forward as the gap between you and the others in front of you widened. Eventually, the loud voices faded into the background, and it was your turn to take the photo. However, while you stood in front of the camera and looked at the smiley face before you, all sense of happiness vanished. If only you weren't so desperate for money, you wouldn't feel compelled to remain in this strange place surrounded by these people.
The flash went off without you even realizing it and caught the absent look on your face. You continued to follow the moving queue like a grazing animal following its herd, lost somewhere in your thoughts until suddenly a person grabbed you by the shoulder.
You instinctively started to defend yourself with widened eyes. "What the hell dude?!" you screamed silently in a panic until you saw the grinning perpetrator in front of you. "Su-bong? What's your problem, I told you to stay away from me asshole, are you stupid?" you grunted angrily and tried again to catch up with the person in front of you so as not to block the way any further.
Thanos just shrugged his shoulders disinterestedly while he casually climbed the stairs behind you. "You really talk a lot, so don't hold it against me when I tune most of it out," he replied, which made you walk a little faster and made him pick up a little more speed to keep up with you.
"Hey, wait a second, woman!" he called out and followed you. "Besides, you know what? You should just call me Thanos, everyone does - it's the name I go by, you know? Not that I expect someone like you to understand the creative thought behind it, but come on. At least try."
You raised your palm to stop his flow of words and perhaps also to put up an imaginary wall between the two of you. "You can explain it however you want, but that's not your name, it's stupid, and I'm definitely not going to call you that." you laughed at him. "Only someone like you could watch every single Marvel movie there is and then identify with the ugly mega villain, really."
That's why I'm not listening, he thought to himself, running his tongue through his teeth in annoyance. "Can you like not be a bitch for a second? You're killing the mood," he spoke out before leaning over the railing and shouting. "The mood is dying!"
"Shut up!" you whispered aggressively as you dragged him away by the arm and rubbed your face in frustration. "What did I do wrong in life besides being born to deserve this..."
Su-bong shook his sleeve from your grip as he sighed himself. "Don't be so dramatic. Are you really still angry about that thing with -"
"Yes," you answer without hesitation, not needing to know how he finished his sentence. Why? Because ever since you knew him, this guy had only made decisions that made you angry. When you thought of the reason that finally broke the camel's back, you had to stop yourself and take a deep breath. "Whatever, someone like you isn't worth it," you declared and then walked with several others through some gate, into the open. No, you were still surrounded by walls, even if they disguised themselves as the sky and clouds.
"Welcome to the first game. All players, please wait a moment on the field. I repeat -"
You continued to look around and noticed people entering from two more entrances. Thanos stood in front of you to block your view. "Are you seriously ignoring me right now? You women are all the same."
You only confirmed his statement with your silence and by averting your gaze from him. Before he could object any further, the gates suddenly closed behind you and the voice from the loudspeakers started talking again. "The first game is called: Green Light, red Light."
A game for children? You repeated perplex in your head and tuned out the voice explaining the rules of the game. You often played this game as a child anyway, you knew how to play it. Do we really earn money by playing this?
"Listen to me! Listen carefully, everyone!" A man suddenly shouted out, attracting the attention of the crowd by trying to explain that losing in this innocent game would mean death.
Unconsciously, your heart began to beat faster as various thoughts raced through your mind. What is this crazy guy talking about? You get killed if you lose? What nonsense. But on the other hand, there must be a catch, who else would give out money for something like this? Maybe -
"Don't worry, that guy just has a few screws loose." Su-bong's voice suddenly spoke out next to you as he turned his index finger next to his head to visualize it. "I can see that there are a million completely unnecessary thoughts running through your little head right now because you always have this funny look on your face when you do," he explained and you just tried really hard not to pay attention to him. He just had to make life difficult for you.
Your eyes wandered again and you looked at the disbelieving faces of the others, who were also just looking at the front man strangely. I'll just be careful and see what happens. Someone will probably lose and then we'll see if it's true or not, simple as that.
There was an announcement that the game was about to start and you saw the stopwatch at the front set to five minutes. You took a deep breath and finally, the robot girl moved to look away. "Red light, green light."
Your concentration was fixed on watching her movements so that you could stop at the right moment. You didn't want to rush, but the time pressure was real. You found yourself glancing at the time too often and subconsciously started to count the seconds you had left. You usually weren't a person who could work under such circumstances, but you had to manage the whole thing somehow. You really didn't want to lose, especially not be the first to do it.
"Freeze! Don't move!"
Shut the fuck up. This guy was seriously getting on your nerves. Your eyes were looking forward while you just stood still and then, a bee flew in front of you. Stay away you stupid thing, you thought as the distance between the insect and your face grew smaller and smaller.
A female voice next to you finally spoke out. "Is this guy on drugs?" She asked when the strange man started to scream again, you didn't know if it was that which caught the bee's attention or her sweet perfume that was suddenly being carried through the wind in your direction, but it didn't matter. You were just glad that it wasn't your problem anymore. Though, you couldn't breathe a sigh of relief since you didn't dare breathe at all when that creepy doll was turned in your direction. The thing looked like it could shoot lasers out of its eyes at any second or something.
"Nope, that's not how you act when you're high." Thanos replied from beside you, and even if you could hold your breath for as long as you needed to, things looked a lot different when it came to a petty comment.
Your mouth didn't move when you spoke, like that of a ventriloquist's. "Of course, you would know best, you fucking drug addict." was all that came out of you while you looked at his back.
Thanos grunted as several ideas popped into his head about how he could twist your words, but he tried really hard not to say any of them. I could really take some pills right now. "I'm about to really hurt your feelings, sweetie."
"No! Really?" you let out as you pretended to be really scared of what was about to happen before your tone changed back to being monotone. "I'm pissing in my pants, please don't."
Ignoring your argument, the little innocent bee finally landed on the neck of number 196. "Hey, what's that?" she uttered as she felt a slight tingling sensation on her neck.
Thano's eyes turned to her figure beside him as he answered her. "Don't freak out, it's just a bee."
"A bee?!" She exclaimed in a panic and started waving her arms around wildly to scare the insect away as quickly as possible. You watched her, as many others probably did right now, but the girl herself realized her own mistake far too late when she finally stopped moving and looked up at Thanos. "Shit." she laughed out. "I just moved."
As soon as she finished her sentence, a bullet flew straight through her skull and dropped her body motionless to the floor. You felt a cold shiver run through your whole body and your heart suddenly stopped before it started beating like crazy in your chest. That didn't just happen. Your head automatically tried to calm you down with some kind of slander, but your eyes couldn't help but move to the dead body on the floor, which was now smeared with fresh blood. No, it really did.

Just a Bit of Fun
[ Jack Abbot x Reader ]
~ Fluff, WC: 3749
~ Prequel: The Guy at The Bar
~ Mostly gender neutral but there is a section using female pronouns, pls let me know if you want another version with other pronouns
-------------- banner coming soon -------------
- Reader is keeping a big secret from Dana, accidentally.
Fortunately, the ER today has been pretty slow. Not that you'll say out loud but only a couple people are left out in chairs. You're struggling to get a snack out of the vending machine. Everyone knows this one is a money thief but it's the only one with your favorite snack.
While you're distracted, Dana uses it as an opportunity to talk to Robby about her newest issue within the ER. It's not a real issue at all, but no one dares to say it to her face.
"Call me old school, but I don't understand it." She says, just directly out of your earshot.
"Well-" He begins, but obviously Dana cuts him off quick.
"Don't you call me anything with the word old in it."
"Oh, I wouldn't dream of it." Robby chuckles. "I don't get it either but it's not any of our business." He knows exactly what she's talking about. It's the only thing he's heard from her in a couple days now.
"Of course it is. This is my ER, all of its my business." He doesn't contridict that it's her ER, but he can't stop his grin at her dramatics.
"Stop being a gossip." He lectures her as usual. Of course it's not her fault, she gets bored.
"Hey, you want to know too. Don't even deny it."
"Obviously I want to know but I'm not gonna sneak around behind their backs." That and he knows more than he'll let Dana see. She'll have his head on a silver platter if she finds out you told him before her.
"What are we gossiping about?" You whisper from behind them. Not meaning to sneak up on them but they were standing right in your path.
"You're just as bad as Dana." Robby rolls his eyes at you. He does that a lot.
"Don't be talking shit out in the open if you don't want me to be curious." You tell him in a lecturing tone. "That's on you, Buddy."
"We were not talking shit." He hates when you call him buddy, that's why you do it. Robby isn't usually one to talk shit but on a few occasions you've caught it happening.
"Uh huh, quick defense there." You smile at his dramatic huff. Once you get to him, he's not nearly as intimidating. Now you can poke fun at him all you want.
He doesn't grace with you a verbal response before giving up and walking away.
"He's no fun." Dana mutters under her breath. You look over in her direction, forgetting she was there for a moment. You should know better, she's always there.
"That's okay, we're fun enough for him too." You walk around the counter to sit down and take a breath for a moment, while you can.
"What are you doing here, kid? I barely ever see you in the daylight." She takes a seat in the chair next to you.
"Filling in for Collins. Robby asked me to while she's on vacation. Night shift will do without me for a bit." You fidget by moving back and forth in the chair. You and Collins have bonded a lot through the years. The nature of her vacation isn't a happy one.
"I don't know." She immediately disagrees. "Abbot might fall apart without you by his side."
You can see the mischievous smile forming.
"What's that supposed to mean?" You turn quickly to face her head on.
"You know what I mean, I never see one of you without the other."
"He's not here right now is he? Besides we work different days a lot."
"Not if it's up to the two of you." She shrugs with a laugh.
"We work well together." You deflect in disbelief. What is she getting at right now?
"I bet you'd be good at a lot of other things together too." She keeps her head down as she says it, you know she's struggling to get the words out through her laugh.
"Dana it is way too early in the morning for you to be saying stuff like that." You tell her in astonishment. "Have you no shame?"
It takes her a full moment to stop laughing at her own words. You get the urge to walk away but you know she'd chase you down.
"I'm just saying, you two would be good together."
"Dana. You can't be encouraging me to have sex with my boss."
"Why not? It's never hurt nobody."
"I am walking away from this conversation right now."
"C'mon, hon, just live a little." She calls after you.
You shake your head harshly as you walk away and her laugh echos through the hall.
You know neither you nor Jack have actually told anyone other than Robby that your together, but you didn't think she would still be this oblivious.
You can't explain why you played along instead of coming out with the truth. At this point, you might as well have fun with it.
Tumblr media
The next day, Dana seems to be just as determined to get answers as the last. Your reactions to her teasing certainly didn't help.
"I don't see what the big deal is." You and Dana are sitting in the lounge, trying to eat lunch while there's not too much work to be done. Knock on wood this next couple days will follow a similar pattern. "We work together so what? You and Robby work together all the time and I'm not pushing you two into each other." She immediately gives you a look of disgust.
"Don't even try that, it's different and you know that. Robby and I don't look at each other the way you guys do."
"We don't look at each other like anything other than good coworkers." You tell her confidently, perhaps taking the joke too far. Honestly if she hasn't figured it out by now, that's on her.
"You are so full of shit."
"I think the older you get, the crazier you get too."
"Did you seriously just call me old and crazy in the same sentence?"
"Hey I just call it like I see it." You raise your hands in a joking defense.
"Abbot's a good looking guy, I know you see that." She wiggles her eyebrows at you.
"Well I'm not gonna deny that."
"So why not take the chance? It doesn't have to be anything serious."
"I like things how they are." You shrug and pay more attention to your food than necessary.
Whatever she's about to say next is cut off by McKay running in.
You're not paying attention to anything they're saying but Dana rushes out quickly and leaves McKay standing in the doorway. Robby probably needed her help with something.
"Are you fucking with her?" Mckay laughs as she looks at you curiously.
"So I'm guessing you know?"
"You guys are very obvious. Has she not gotten it yet?" You get up to throw away your lunch trash while she talks.
"Apparently not. I guess she figured I was single and Robby didn't tell her otherwise." You shrug and walk with McKay through the hall.
"Strange considering he's such a gossip."
"That's what I'm saying!"
Tumblr media
"Oh that's a really pretty ring." You're standing by your locker when Dana appears. It's day three of her pushing for answers and one of those rare times where you get off on time.
"Huh." You look down and see the ring Dana is referring to. It's on a chain around your neck that must've come out while leaning over so much throughout the day. "Oh thanks, I didn't realize it was out." You quickly tuck it back into your shirt, before Dana asks too many questions.
"What kind of stone is that? It doesn't look like diamond." Of course she's gonna ask a lot of questions.
"Oh it's not, I can never remember the exact name of this one but I'm not a huge fan of diamonds." You explain while grabbing your other clothes out so you can get home as quick as possible.
"Why do you wear it on a necklace?" She asks in a knowing manner.
"Cause' knowing this place it would get lost or ruined otherwise. I'd do it with my other ones too but I wear a million of them." No lie in that statement.
"So why wear it instead of keeping it with the rest?"
"It's my favorite. I just like having it so close to me." Also not a lie.
"That makes sense, it is really pretty." She turns to pull stuff out of her own locker.
"Thanks. Uh, you have any plans after this?" You try to change the topic as casual as possible.
"Lots of sleep hopefully."
"I think that's all we can hope for at this point." You also want to go home and sleep. Especially because the house will be empty all night.
"Sleep well kid."
"See you bright and early." As soon as you're changed, you walk out and leave Dana to herself.
You give a quick goodbye to Robby, who of course hasn't even gotten close to finishing up yet. And then make your way outside when you're greeted with a familiar face.
"How was it today?" He asks from his position leaning against the wall.
"Not to bad. I think you should have okay night." You smile at him which shows off just how tired you are.
"I hope so."
"Well, I guess I'll see you in the morning." You say with a saddened tone.
"Goodnight Dr. Abbot." He pulls you in for a swift hug.
"Goodnight- or goodmorning, Dr. Abbot. Whatever it is to you right now."
"Go home and sleep, you need it."
"Sounds good to me." You pull away from him and both go your separate ways.
Tumblr media
"I can't believe it." Dana exclaims just moments after you left. She immediately found Robby to talk to about what she just saw.
"What are you on about now?" He sighs as he always does when putting up with the gossips in the ER, especially Dana's.
"She was wearing an engagement ring, oh how did we miss this?" She seems personally offended by this piece of information.
Robby tries as hard as he can to hide his grin. He didn't miss anything, but again, Dana would have his head if she knew.
"That's why she's been so put off by the idea of going out with Abbot."
"Maybe she's just not interested in him. She wears a lot of rings that could pass as engagement rings. You probably just saw it wrong." He tries to offer a reasonable solution. One that doesn't make her even more invested in your romance life.
"No, it was different than the other ones. And she was wearing all day under her shirt. People don't do that with any old ring." She follows behind him as he walks around trying to finish off his work for the night.
"Why didn't you just ask her about it? She has no reason to lie." He comes to your defense.
"I did! Discreetly but the point still stood. She just said it was her favorite." She comes off even more exasperated than before.
"And you don't believe her because?"
"She is not good at coming up with excuses, I can always tell when she's trying to come up with something on the spot."
"Dana, please take this advice I'm about to give you seriously. Calm down a little bit. If she's hiding something it's for a good reason."
"What reason would be good enough to not tell me?"
"Ask her." He practically begs.
She gasps suddenly, "Maybe Abbot knows."
For the ten millionth time that day, Robby rolls his eyes.
Tumblr media
"She knows." You resign as he walks in the door.
"Who knows what?" You hear him move around the living room as he puts everything down from the night.
"Dana. I don't know what she knows but it's something."
"Okay? And this is an issue because?" He walks into the kitchen to greet you as he talks.
"You're the one that insisted on hiding this." You lean into him as he puts his arms around your waist.
"At first. If you want to tell Dana go ahead."
"I can't! It would be weird now. It's been years at this point." He chuckles from behind you.
"I don't think it's a big deal."
"So says you. You work the night shift, you don't deal with Dana's craziness like I do."
"You'll be back on night shift soon enough."
"Oh honey, it's funny you think that'll stop her."
He let's go of you to grab something to eat.
"I know it won't. But I'm not the one dealing with it."
"Be nice to me, Jack. I'm struggling here." You're being totally dramatic about it but oh well at this point.
"How dare she care about your life outside of work." He says blankly as he focuses on finding food.
"You're not gonna find anything in there, we need to go shopping."
He shuts the cupboard and focuses more on you. "I think I'll bring you lunch later."
"Honey, you need to sleep longer than a couple hours."
He rolls his eyes, "No I don't."
You head to the living room to grab the rest of your stuff for your shift.
"You don't need to bring me lunch, I'll get something." He follows you into the room and sits down on the couch.
"It might help with your Dana issue."
"Shes gonna hurt me, isn't she? She's a lot stronger than she looks "
"Most likely."
"Good to see how concerned you are."
"I try my best." You laugh at his words and finish grabbing your stuff before pausing for a moment.
"Wait a minute, why are you here so early. You're shift isn't over yet?"
He glances up at you for a second before looking back at the TV.
"Did you clock out early so you wouldn't overlap with Dana coming in?"
"Of course not."
You burst out laughing. He gives you an unimpressed stare.
"Okay sweetie, whatever you say." It's hard to believe this is the most intimidating guy in the ER. "If she wants to get you, she will."
Tumblr media
You let out an embarrassing yelp as Dana quickly grabs your arm and pulls you into the empty on call room.
"Was that really necessary?" You exclaim while she shuts the door behind you both.
"Yes, I want the truth." She crosses her arms over her chest and stares at you pointedly.
"Don't we all." You sigh dramatically.
"Seriously, kid. Who gave you that ring? I know it's an engagement ring. I looked it up." You roll your eyes at her. Of course she's still on this.
"I didn't know you knew how to do that." You mumble under your breath and throw your arms across your chest.
"Don't sass me or I'll tell everyone."
"Tell them what? You don't know anything." She squints her eyes as she thinks of what to say next.
"I'm going figure it out. We can do this the easy way or the hard way."
"Dana, I'm not scared of you."
"Yes you are."
"I spend every night working with Abbot. You are not on his level of intimidation." You shake your head with a smile at her reaction to this whole situation.
You're not entirely sure why this is something she's so determined to figure out but it fills your day with a tiny bit of entertainment.
"Just tell me." She demands, staring into your soul.
"Okay fine, I'm married alright. Is that what you wanted to hear?"
Her face shows a mixture of confusion and happiness. Clearly she's glad to finally have a good answer.
"To who??"
"I have already given you more than enough." You brush her off and begin to leave the room she pulled you into.
"You're seriously not gonna tell me?
"I am seriously not gonna tell you."
"Wait, how long have you been hiding this?" She opens her mouth in shock.
"I haven't been hiding anything, you never asked. But it's been about three years now."
"You've only been here for two years. No wonder you've been so weird about Jack." She mutters to herself like she's finally putting the pieces together.
"Next time you won't assume I'm single will you?"
"No I will not." She laughs.
You walk off assuming that's the end of this particular conversation. You're not that lucky.
"So how does your husband feel about your relationship with Abbot?" She sounds very concerned. How the fuck is she not getting it right now?
"Well honestly he's not super fond of him." Why do you continue to make things harder for yourself. This would all be over if you didn't listen to Jack in the first place.
You know he was right to suggest it at first. Coming to work in a new place is hard enough without people knowing you're married to your new boss.
You really thought people would figure it out by now. But of course people never wanted to accuse either of you of anything, so they keep conversations quiet and didn't ask any questions loud enough for you to hear.
"I wonder why?" She asks sarcastically. She clearly sees something between you and Jack. What will it take for her to see what that something is?
Tumblr media
"You are officially on my shit list!" Dana yells from down the hall.
"Oh yay." You whisper sarcastically. "What'd I do now?" You call back down to her.
"Someone is here to see you." She smiles scarily and pulls you by the arm for the second time today.
"Oh is my food here?" You're excited to finally eat and see Jack during the day. Although he's gonna get a very big earful about the importance of enough sleep, especially with a job as grueling as this.
"Yeah and you'll never believe who brought it to you." Sarcasm drips from her voice.
"The magic food fairy?" She's not impressed. You think it sums him up pretty well.
"Abbot. Dr. Jack Abbot. The man who worked all night and should be sleeping all day is instead here bringing you food. Why is that?"
"Do you need to sit for a minute? You seem a little worked up."
"I do not need to sit, I need to hear the explanation you two have been hiding from me." You accidentally let out a small chuckle at her antics. You don't know why this means so much to her.
"Why do you need an explanation for me to get my lunch?"
"First you hide your marriage-" You interrupt her quickly.
"I didn't hide anything."
"Then you admit your husband isn't real fond of Jack."
"Oh honey, you're getting so close." Will this be the moment she finally puts all the pieces together?
You look up to see Jack standing at the nurses station, smiling softly at you as you walk up. It's not big enough for most people to notice. Dana clearly, is not most people.
She stops walking, causing you to slightly bump into her back.
She turns around slowly to face you.
"Surprise?" You reveal, hoping she's finally figured out what's going on.
While she stands in her surprise, you walk over to your husband.
"I told you not to do this." You immediately reprimand him.
"Dana's glaring daggers at the back of your head." Is his simple response.
"Oh let her. She's having some big feelings and you don't get to change the subject that easily." You grab your food out of his hands.
"We haven't seen each other as much lately. Can't I do something nice?" He asks innocently.
"Don't act like you didn't want to see Dana's reaction." You place the food on the counter next to you so you can cross your arms over your chest. It's your power stance.
"What can I say? Karma for being a gossip."
You laugh aloud. "Says you! You listen to everything the nurses talk about and ask me about it later."
"That's not the same." You scoff at his denial.
"Uh huh, whatever you have to tell yourself sweetie." You smile widely at him. Suddenly feelings just how much you've missed him over these last couple days. "Go home and sleep. It's my last day on day shift for now."
"Good. Night shift goes a lot smoother when you're there."
"Aww are you saying you missed me?" You take a step closer to him and his awkwardness.
"No." What a motherfucker.
"Oh I see how it is." You feel Dana's presence come up beside you. "Get some good sleep so we can spend time together without you being such a grump."
"I am never a grump." He defends, his lip curling up just a smudge.
"Wow you're just full of jokes tonight, I see." He gives you a kiss on your head to hide his smile in your hair.
"Have a good shift." He tells you and gives a small nod to Dana before walking out the door.
"So? Figure it out yet?"
"How in the hell did I not know this?" She exclaims softly almost like she's saying it to herself.
"You never asked. No one did." You shrug with a chuckle.
"How long have you been together? He never mentioned anything." She plops down in a chair to continue the conversation.
"He's protective. He thought it would make things harder if people knew I was married to my new boss." You sit in chair next to her. You look around and see all the other doctors currently occupied.
"So as long as you've been here?" She chuckles quietly realizing all she missed over the years.
"Married for three years, together for six. We met at a bar when he was drinking in his sorrows." You remember the memory fondly. "I was gonna tell you when I realized you didn't know, but for some reason it didn't come out."
She laughs loudly at that. Loud enough that a patient to the left gave her a weird look.
"That makes sense. I'm just glad you're not having some weird affair with Jack."
"It's not an affair but it's definitely weird."
"Ha! Eat your lunch kid. I'm gonna hound you for details later." She stands up and gives you a pat on the shoulder.
"Wouldn't expect anything less."

Or you just told us to do it...- Lando x F reader
Tumblr media
Summary: Y/N is the McLaren community manager. Lando leaves a comment on the latest Mclaren post, y/n is not happy about it.
Warnings: Slightly suggestive
Word Count: 1.2 K
Notes: My romance book delulu mind instantly thought of something when reading Lando's response. I'm working on the Play with fire part 3 but it will be a long one
Your job as a McLaren CM was awesome, as it was stressful. You had two young drivers and complete freedom from the managers to do all sorts of trends. And you would if you weren't dealing with a PR nightmare and a black cat.
As much fun as it was when the two of them were in the mood to record stuff, sometimes it could be a torturous nightmare if one was in a funky mood or couldn't deal with pr at that moment.
But after the last race and all the comments on the most recent McLaren post about Oscar deserving more support and Lando being a spoiled diva, plus all sorts of posts on social media about the two of them doing an eventual Hamilton vs Rosberg. The heads of coms had requested to do as much damage control as possible. So the moment you walked in the garage and saw a tyre trolly laying around, you got an idea.
You sent the drivers a text requesting their presence at the garage entrance.
Both drivers knew why you wanted them, so they stalled as much a possible, making you wait over 45 minutes.
"Hey, sorry for the delay." Oscar said with his classic half smile
"Yeah, sorry for the delay. We didn't really want to come." Lando spoke both their minds. Oscar just turned towards him with a look of disapproval but held back a smile.
"I'm just doing my job, guys." You lifted your hands in defeat.
"So, what dance are we doing today?" Lando walked and took your phone from your hand.
"No dance today." You said, yanking the phone back and trying to hide your blushing cheeks. "This will be super simple. You'll push each other on this trolley." They both stared at you, not a single emotion on their faces.
"You're serious?" Oscar wasn't usually so critical, and it almost made you doubt your idea, but you were certain this would please the fans.
"C'mon you guys, this will be gold. It's fast, easy, and the fans will love it."
"You've become so good at describing Lando" Oscar said and then laughed silently as he inspected said trolley.
"I ain't that easy," Lando tried to defend himself
"Or lovable," you replied softly, looking down at your phone.
"Hey, I heard that." Lando turned to look at you, offended.
"Anyways, please, help me with this, and I won't bother you for the rest of the day."
"Promise?" Oscar asked.
"Promise" You answered, crossing your fingers in front of your heart.
"Fine, c'mon Lando, before she comes up with another weird trend."
Both drivers did their best to look entertained, and as much as they hated your idea initially, they ended up having a good 20-minute play date with the trolley, giving you enough material for the day.
After they were gone, you posted the video to Instagram, and like you imagined, it got tons of reactions right away.
At lunch, you checked your phone again, reading through the comments and smiling at your success. Most of them were positive and praised how fun both drivers looked; a couple of mean ones remained, but this was normal. Then a blue check mark caught your eye.
lando "Or you just told us to do it..."
"I'm going to kill him," You said out loud.
"Lando?" Mike, the engineer eating beside you, turned to look at you, amused.
"Who else?"
"You two are like an old married couple." Mike said as he took his coffee and walked towards the exit. "Don't hurt him much; we need him for quali" Mike shouted back as you took your stuff from the table and stormed towards his driver's room. If you weren't so angry, you would've been worried about people thinking about you and Lando as a married couple.
You knocked a couple of times, but there was no answer, then opened the door to find an empty room. You weren't about to search for him around the entire track and make a scene out there. He had to eventually come back, so you decided to sit there and wait, reading the comment whenever you felt the anger was easing down.
Finally, after an hour and a half, you heard his distinctive laugh approaching.
When he opened the door, his eyes went from amused to worried in two seconds, your expression far from friendly.
"Jon, can you give us a sec?" Lando asked his trainer without taking his eyes off you, as if you were an animal about to attack their prey.
"Told you it was a bad idea." Said the trainer before stepping out and closing the door behind him.
Lando walked towards you, but you stretched out your arm, your hand on his chest, making him stop at arm's length.
"Are you trying to get me fired?" You asked, staring right into his soul.
"I was just messing with you."
"No, Lando. You're messing with my job."
"C'mon, it was just a comment." He pushed your arm to the side and walked to hug you tight against his chest. Your arms stuck to your sides, not wanting to fall for his sweet cologne or warmth.
"No, it wasn't. I got specific instructions from coms! We needed this to ease the shit going around"
"People will always say shit" He spoke against your head, his tone slightly tinted with sadness. Social media hasn't been the same for him, at least for the last couple of seasons. The moment you felt his sadness, you couldn't hold back and placed one arm around his waist; he wasn't fully forgiven yet.
Your phone rang in your free hand.
"Ugh" you pushed yourself away, just enough to lift your arm and read the message.
Steve Hello, can you stop by my office in ten?
"He's going to fire me." You let your head fall back and sighed.
"I'm sorry," his voice filled with honesty. "I didn't think."
"Sounds like your MO."
"Hey, unnecessary rudeness."
He hugged you tight again, giving a kiss to your exposed neck.
"If you forgive me, I will let you film me later in our room; I bet the fans would love that," he whispered in your ear. As much as the comment had you blushing and feeling warmer than the scorching sun outside, you had an uncomfortable meeting with your boss to think about.
"If you want to get me fired, just say so. I will sign my resignation right now."
"Fine, we can tape that, and I will let you keep it for personal use."
"You're unbelievable."
Your phone rang again.
Steve Sorry, something just came up. See you in an hour.
"Excellent, extend the torture" you sighed loudly again.
"I'm really sorry" Lando spoke against your neck, giving you goosebumps. "How about I make it up to you?"
You stared at him, eyebrow raised and a serious look on your face.
"I don't have to be out there for another 40 minutes; we can have some nonsocial media-approved fun." He started laying open-mouth kisses to your neck as he took the hem of your shirt and pulled it up.
"And what are we doing for the other 35 minutes?"
"Forget it." He said, unwrapping his arms and turning to walk towards the door.
"Come here." You took his McLaren-issued shirt and pulled him back to join your lips. He had done it bad this time, but Steve was probably just going to give you a slap on your wrist, and you would just blame it on Lando.
