What's the ideal length of a fanfic chapter?

I am at least a few weeks out from finishing my fic, but I'm just thinking ahead to how I want to put it up

It's a 5+1 fic, so has automatically got 6 chapters. (Julian is stuck for six consecutive days in a timeloop.) Originally, I was just going to post 1 chapter every week as I edited it, but while Chapter 1 is a friendly 3,500 words, Chapters 2 and 3 are both just over the 10,000 word mark, and I'm only halfway through Chapter 4 but it's shaping up to be at least 15,000, somehow!

So my options are:

The Original Plan

I aim to publish one 10k+ word chapter each week.

Pros: It's as intended, each "day" of the story happens in full, within its own chapter. Good if you like long updates?

Cons: Since I don't *actually* know how long editing will take, I might not be able to keep to a weekly schedule and timings may vary. Pretty lengthy chapters.

Plan 2:

I cut each of the original chapters in half for publishing, and either:

2a - I aim to publish two 5k+ word chapters each week.

Pros: It's still mostly as intended, each "day" gets published in full, just in two parts. Shorter chapters

Cons: Timings may vary again, since it's a lot to edit in a week. The story is split up slightly arbitrarily.

2b - I publish one 5k+ word chapter each week (cutting the original chapters in half)

Pros: I should be able to stick to the weekly schedule for sure. Shorter chapters

Cons: Each "day" of the story is cut in half, probably at a somewhat arbitrary point. 1/2 of Chapter 4 is still going to be 7-9k in length 😅

Plan 3

I publish one or two 3-6k word chapters each week. I'd think of the story as one long tale rather than as The Six Days and split up the current chapters into smaller ones at places I feel are suitable.

Pros: Shorter, more even, chapters. Better pacing Being able to stick to a weekly schedule (and possibly an extra chapter every so often)

Cons: Completely abandoning the 5+1 structure Story won't be told as intended

Wild Seed by Octavia E. Butler (8/10)

This was my first ever Octavia E. Butler book, and it didn't disappoint! The way this story used Anyanwu and Doro's relationship to comment on power dynamics and issues in the world at large blew my mind; I found the discussion of eugenics particularly interesting. They were both such intensely flawed yet compelling characters. This book skirts the line between fantasy and sci-fi (something I'm looking into for my thesis as a peripheral issue), and it definitely made me wonder about the world. I wasn't aware going in that this was a prequel situation, but even then I do think I was a bit dissatisfied with how things left off. That's just my personal taste though.

Haikyuu!! Vol. 41 and 42 by Haruichi Furudate (10/10)

It usually takes me around half an hour or so to get through a volume of manga, but these took me a couple of hours. Why? Because I had to keep putting it down because I was crying so hard I couldn't breathe. As someone who has read a plethora of books ever since I was young, it takes a lot to get me to cry, especially that hard. I was sobbing. Furudate has created such wonderful characters and then puts them through so many struggles that I can't even be mad about because it's highly realistic that someone pursuing a sport would run into this! Seeing Hinata break down followed instantly by the third years graduating and the Brazil arc had me miserable in the best way possible. I usually never rate manga or graphic novels five stars because they're usually super fast-paced and so much relies on writing style for me when I read novels, but this just broke me.

Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter (46%)

This is a very cute book so far. I could probably tell you exactly what's going to happen from this point onward, but it's a genre convention for romcoms to be predictable. Liz is a fun protagonist; she's quirky in a way that has a reason and isn't annoying. There's good chemistry between the leads with some great banter, and you really can't ask for more than that. However, I will say the constant song references are starting to irk me, especially with the lyrics included in the writing --I don't know, it just reminds me too strongly of my early fanfiction years.

Moon Rising by Tui T. Sutherland (45%)

If there's one thing about me, I love a mind-reading protagonist. Moonwatcher is probably my favorite perspective of the Wings of Fire series, even if I wish she'd speak up sometimes. Sutherland did a great job making her similar to Starflight, since they're the same tribe, without being a carbon copy, and while mind reading might seem a little too omniscient, her inexperience and general social ineptitude keep it from becoming overpowered. I'm thrilled to see the return of Peril, whose story is left open from the previous arc, and I'm excited to learn more about the other new characters (Winter, Qibli, and I believe Turtle) who have their own interesting introductions.

The Fellowship of the Ring by J. R. R. Tolkien (43%)

Despite my fantasy obsession, this is my first time reading The Lord of the Rings (though I have read The Hobbit). While it is definitely much slower-paced than the average modern fantasy, I'm enjoying myself so much. If you've been following my blog for a while, you'll know I'm a worldbuilding nut, so this is like my dream book. There are so many tangents to tell stories about the history of Middle Earth and all the goings-on of the world, and I keep noticing little details and wishing they'd talk about those too. Tolkien is also a rather funny writer; Bilbo's passive aggression in particular made me giggle. While this a bit of a dense story, it's definitely living up to its reputation so far.

Boys With Sharp Teeth by Jenni Howell (42%)

This is a project for my part-time job, so I'm not sure how much I can actually divulge, but let me just say this: this book is compared to The Raven Boys in its summary, and it's living up to that.

Her Wolves by G. Bailey (7%)

I won't lie, the writing of this book so far does not give me hope. However, it could still be a fun read even if the grammar and syntax aren't the best. Also, funny thing, this book is set in the future on Earth. I did not know this. I thought it was a high fantasy. So imagine my surprise to see a landmass labeled "America Court" on the map. My misunderstanding was cleared up soon, but it still made me laugh.

You were hidden in the theater room, making sure to not move around too much where you could be heard and found. hoping that no one would see or hear you as you felt yourself slip into a dissociative state. you have never been fully caught in one, you wouldn't want to be. “You're okay. you're okay,” you lied to yourself while you tried to pay no scrutiny to another student referring to you as a (male/female) to your face and others for the last week. it echoes, it fucking echoes through your head. An uncomfortable knot in your chest grew and it wasn't gonna stop anytime soon by the looks of it-- the thoughts of those comments they had said whenever you were to dare interfere with fans' talk with their idol, grew louder in your head, drowning out your conscience.

You hugged yourself as tightly as you could as you felt tears well up in your eyes. No, you weren't hugging yourself. More like trying to rip yourself apart but not having the strength to do so as your dissociation turned into a breakdown. You felt like you were dethatched from your body while weighing a million pounds at the same time when a familiar voice ripped you back into reality. “(l/n) what are you doing here so late? You should be heading home, no?”

Out of all people who could walk in this very moment, it was Shu— Shu who was understanding, he has indeed seen you slip once before, but he never knew what it was that was happening. Out of all things you needed right now, was to be checked back into reality so abruptly. Your trembling stopped instantly, trying to uphold composer so he wouldn't see mid-way in your state. “Ahem, (l/n) since you're here. We might as well have a little talk, shall we? It would be rude of me can stay here not accompany you with any small talk...” he mustered up. “There hasn't been any trouble with you has there? I'd prefer not,” he walked to a table that was illuminated by a small lamp. He was weaving something, you've never actually seen him sew before but you were aware it was his skill no doubt. “No,” doing your best to keep your voice steady as you turned away from him, whipping the found blanket over your puffy red eyes.

Shu was never really good at small talk, so the silence was sharp— sharp enough to cut the air. He did care about your feelings, after all as his producer: He wouldn't mind hearing about any thoughts on your mind. “Mhm, but” he always did care about your feelings and made sure to check on you whenever you two met, stress hits like a bumper-- he'd be one to know. “You shouldn't rest on the ground as it is filthy and will get dust all over those clothes of yours. If you're chilly, I can make you a sweater that would do much better than dirtying your clothes. A lady/gentleman should never let their beauty be tainted.”

And there it was. You tensed at the word (lady/gentleman). It made you want to squirm out of your skin, and it was necessarily not what Shu was expecting you to fully react to. Yet you did, and he noticed. He tilted his head, carefully looking you over. You couldn't tell what he was thinking, but his sharp gaze made that uneasy knot in your chest duplication as tears formed back up in your eyes. you wished he would just kill you right then.

“Please stop staring at me." You tried to push away, to get up and go, but Shu pulled a hold of your arm and brandished you in place. You attempted to free yourself of his grip to no avail.

“You...” Shu's voice was soft. “... Don't like your skin, do you?” If it hadn't been for his soft tone, you would've thought he'd bash you right then in there in that room. It was the hint of uncharacteristic concern, however, it was common that he showed concern with you so that made you stop trying to get away and turn back to look at him.

He let go of your arm and slowly moved his hand to your face, gently wiping a finger to your cheek where a tear had begun to fall. You didn't mean to, but you flinched at such a tender action.

“Quite untrustworthy, am I now? you should tell me things.” Shu said with a hint of hurt.

You've heard the many stories from Kiryu of how he has similar issues himself.

You knew little about Itsuki. You knew most about him splitting himself into Mademoiselle, and from what you had heard from Kiryu, that had its other history and effects that took a toll on him. Having a completely different soul takes your personality by 2 thirds most. Looking back and replying at one than the one that you know is him, that you know is himself, must be some other kind of hell to experience.

“Look- I just don't know how to explain it.” You finally reply. “I began T a few months ago and I thought that I was finally going to be happy in my skin, but then...” Your thoughts trailed off and your eyes roamed away from looking at Shu, anything but looking at him right now. You didn't want to start thinking about that person and dissociate all over again “, something kinda just happened.”

Shu stared at you intently for a minute before asking very seriously “Who must I need to kill for you? That foolish Tenshouin?”

You threw your head over to look at him. You lifted your hands to frantically wave them back and forth in front of you. “No no. You don't need to kill him— I mean..” You seized yourself for a split second and lowered your hands. “Don't do anything like that, it would only cause more dangers, thanks for the offer though...”

You had said a bit too much by letting 'him' slip out, confirming that there indeed was a person at fault for making you feel the way you had and Shu absolutely caught it.

“Hm, I suppose you're right...” He sighed in, speaking quietly but just as seriously as he posed a new offer to you.

‘If I can't stop this so-called man from doing such, the least I can do is comfort you.' He thought

You were kinda opposed to any kind of action that seemed was gonna come it's way, as you were just in that state, but you could not deny that It would be a hell of a lot better and reassuring than just balling up in the corner begging to die like earlier. Something about that made you chuckle humorously to yourself as you nodded “Uhm... alright?”

That answer seemed to please him as he gave an approving hum before pushing himself off the floor and standing. You continued to sit where you were on the floor, needing a bit longer to compose yourself before getting up. “I will be around to help you next time, I'll make sure of that... It's my job to take care of you is It not? And I'd hate to see you in such a sufferable state. I do plenty of that myself” he scoffed. This made you feel less queasy— he was the first caring enough to talk to you like this, let alone comfort you.

“…Hey, Shu?” You quickly asked. Before he could turn around to grab a heftier blanket that was laying among one of the theaters' chairs, most likely left from Natsume. He turned to look at you, making another humming sound, only this time more quizzical.

“Can you not... tell anyone you saw me like this. Please?”

He gave a short chuckle and nodded his head in agreement as to say: my lips are sealed— “ah, I found the leftover quilt, sit.”

I feel like he's pretty introverted, enjoys being at home with you

the both of you are pretty broke for a while, so a lot of dates were at home

you guys will have nice dinners at home

he'll set the table nicely, set the mood with candles

he'll redecorate the space so well you feel like you're at an actual restaurant

I'm curious(sorry if you've answered this before), do you think buck and eddie know their sexualities and that into eachother?. Personally, I think buck could be bi, always like men/women not a big deal to him but he doesnt know he likes eddie and not sure with eddie

I can't remember if I answered this before so I'll answer it again and I'll start by saying that the writers are doing an incredible job of making it hard to figure out exactly where Buck and Eddie are at in regards to both their sexualities and also their love for one another and that is exactly how it should be - it makes it so much more complete storytelling and it will be so much more satisfying that we've had to kind of work it out along with the characters!

To me Eddie is gay - super super repressed gay, so repressed, I'm not sure if he truly knows he's gay at this point because he has it buried so deep (and there is all that trauma conveniently helping him to bury it further). I do think he knows he loves Buck, I'm just not convinced he realises that that love is a deep abiding forever kind of love - think his repression is causing (and enabling) him to think that its normal to love your best friend in that way. If anyone ever called him out on the heart eyes he keeps pulling out whenever he's around Buck he would deny it to the max, but then it might actually make him think about it!!

As for Buck - he is an eternal mystery wrapped up in a conundrum. I flip flop backwards and forwards on him so often! I think he's bi - of that I'm in no doubt, what I change my mind on is if he knows he is or not. I'm currently of the mindset that he knows and its not a big deal to him and that he leans more towards women than men - my rewatch has highlighted all the little moments that make me think this - the Maddie crush on Eddie comments, the comments about not setting Josh up with her brother because she like him too much and the TK scene in the cross over are all there, but the one that convinced me is actually a bit obscure - its Peru Buck - aside from the terrible hair clothes and tan (i'll never not be amused by it - genius work from the make up, hair and wardrobe departments!), its the way he seems to be flirting with Connor - the guy at the bar - until he looks at the woman with the super long hair and then he dials it back - I watch that scene and can see him pull back on the flirting - his whole demeanour backs away from it - watch it and see if you can see what I mean!

I also flip flop on if he knows he's in love with Eddie - a big part of me thinks he knows but doesn't want to ruin a good thing and he's someone who takes his cues from others so he won't be the one to act on it because that would risk too much - and Buck has never had stable relationships (apart from with Maddie) up until he joined the 118 and that is part of why I flip flop - I wonder if Buck actually knows what its like to have a best friend - because I don't think he ever had one before Eddie. I get the impression he always knew he was 'different' and a bit alone and so did the stuff that he thought would make him popular (keg parties anyone!) - masking his way through life until the firefam adopted him. Its this that could be confusing him about his feelings for Eddie - he doesn't know the actual difference between a platonic best friend and a soulmate love of your life best friend so he hasn't twigged that his feeling are the later rather than the former

its al so much fun to ponder and speculate over - there is so much there to look at! I do know its going to be amazing when they do both realise and I cannot wait to watch it although I'm not sure I'll be functional for a bout a year after it happens - at least we'll all have each other to flap at incoherently!

After a long struggle over Etheria, She-ra managed to defeat Vaatu, or Horde Prime as he was called in our time, but some of his dark power was left and has been regenerating itself ever since. Growing stronger each day." You sit and consider what to do with this type of information.

"So if he's out now, that means he had to bond with someone... Who would want that type of power?" Swift Wind shook his head, "Someone crazy but we need to speed up your training, you need to be able to change to She-ra if you want a chance to defeat Vaatu."

So you worked hard, day and night. Mastering the sword and its other forms and trying to turn into She-ra. "The time is coming..." Swift Wind said to you as you walked up for your daily training. "I can feel Vaatu's power growing... It's almost time for you to return, your friend will need you help." You felt your heart drop to your stomach with dread. You were woken from your slumber, feeling Swift Wind's horn poke you repeatedly in the back. "Hmmm... What?" You mumble trying to shake yourself awake. "It's time, y/n." "What? Five more minutes?" Swift just continues to poke you, harder this time. "It is time y/n!" You sit up immediately, letting the blankets fall off your body. "What but I haven't even been able to transform yet!?" You said worriedly as you scrambled around to dress yourself, hopping on one foot as you try and put on a boot and follow Swift Wind. "Well..." Swift Wind shrugged, "You're just going to have to use what you know. Who knows maybe you'll transform once your in the heat of battle?" "In the heat of battle!?" You gaped at Swift Wind, who in turn rolled his eyes. "Duh."

You ride Swift Wind towards where he felt movement and were surprised to see 6 benders fighting against an army of evil spirits. "Fly me over and drop me!" You say to Swift Wind as you get closer. "You sure?" "Yeah... It's what you've been training me for right?" Swift Wind nods his head and speeds up over the spirit army. You take a deep breath and let yourself slide off of Swift Wind. "For the honor of grayskull!" You yell and almost laugh out of joy for finally being able to transform.

"Who is that!?" A earth bender below you yells as he watches your form fall from the sky, a bright light surrounding the body for a few seconds before hitting the ground. The benders stop for a second, to catch their breath, as all the spirits turn on you as you slam into the ground. You spend the next 5 minutes cutting through the spirits, gaining only a few cuts and scratches, none of them fazing you.

You cut through the last one and let yourself take a breath and look at your new form. Your hair was super long and blonde while your body was covered in a white and gold body suit with a gold crown. "This is so cool!" You exclaim before looking at the benders that you had helped. "Are you guys okay?" A boy dressed in green nodded his head as a bald man seemed to be in a more defensive stance. "Great... Swifty!" You yell out and feel the alicorn land behind you. "Okay, now we need to find Korra... You guys don't happen to know where she is, do you?" This time, before the boy in green could speak, the bald guy spoke. "And what business do you have with the Avatar?" You give the bald guy a fake pout, "Come on Tenzin, I know we only met a handful of times but I'm not one to be forgotten." You transform and watch as recognition shows in Tenzin's eyes. "Y/n?" You smile, "The one and only."

After greeting Tenzin and getting a brief rundown of what was happening, you and Swift Wind were flying above Republic City, watching a giant Korra and Vaatu fight. "You know this it not what I imagined the city to look like." Swift Wind commented and you rolled your eyes. "I haven't been here before but I am sure it isn't usually covered in vines." "Yeah, well-" Whatever Swift Wind was about to say was cut off by a bright yellow light. "What is that?" You ask as Swift Wind flies closer to the source of light. "It looks like a girl..." "Holy shit is that Jinora!? Aww, she's so pretty."

"Y/n, focus." "Yes, right, focus. What is she doing?" You ask as you finally collect yourself. "By the spirits, she's holding Raava!" Swift Wind yells out and you look confused, "I really should have payed attention." "She is trying to put Raava into Vaatu but it seems like she can't get through." "Well that's were we come in." You say, confident in your ability as She-ra after transforming the first time. "Fly me over and drop me" Swift Wind looks concerned, you were pretty high up. "And then catch me before I hit the ground." Swift nods in confirmation and flies above Vaatu, where Jinora is still trying to insert Raava into Vaatu's body. "Lets do this." You say as you let yourself slide off of Swift Wind's back again, kind of wishing you could fly. "Incoming!" You yell to get Jinora's attention so you don't accidently stab her or something. Jinora's eyes widen as she watches you seemingly fall from the sky. "For the honor of grayskull!" You transform and stab your sword into Vaatu's chest, letting your momentum carry you and cut through the spirits body.

You didn't return to the spirt world with Korra and Jinora, instead you had Swift Wind drop you off at Air Temple Island with Pema, Ikki, Meelo, and Rohan. Swift Wind had deemed that you were ready to be She-ra on your own and that he could finally move on and be with his She-ra. You would miss Swift Wind. You spent the time until Korra returned, catching up with Pema and getting to know Rohan. You almost cried the first night catching up with Pema, seeing how motherly she was towards her children made you miss your own mother.

"Now Korra, I do have a surprise for you when we get to the island." Tenzin announces as they get closer to Air Temple Island. Bolin and Mako both holding small smiles as they remember how sad Korra was when she learned that you had disappeared and how happy she will be when the two of you get reunited.

Everyone got off of the bison as soon as they got to the island. Some of the people were confused as they saw you in your She-ra form, playing with Tenzin's children. You stopped playing with the children when you felt eyes on you and turned around. You gained a huge smile when you saw Korra and turned back to normal. Korra's eyes went wide when she saw you transform and she immediately ran towards you.

You let out a laugh as she wrapped you in a hug and swung you around. "Spirits! You're here and you were blonde! Wait, were you that person from the battle? That doesn't matter, where have you been? Why didn't you tell me your mother passed?" Korra rambled out as she held you and you laughed into her shoulder. "I missed you so much." You tell her as you pull back from the hug some to make eye contact with her.

You expect Korra to repeat the sentiment but instead she just holds eye contact with you quietly. "Korra I-" You get cut off as Korra presses her lips to yours. Your eyes widen for a second before letting yourself relax and return the affection. You both pull away when you hear someone clear their throat and you then remember that everyone was still around and watching your reunion. You blush heavily and pull away from Korra. "I... Um..." Korra on the other hand, ignores the fact that people are there and pulls you in for another kiss.

Can you do a Marcus Rashford imagine where you're married and get along fine with everyone in his family except one of his sister's. Marcus' mum had called you all over for a girls lunch. Usually the air between you and his sister is just tense and you tend to keep it in whenever she says something to annoy you which is what you do during lunch too but let's just say today wasn't one of those days and she really grinds your bone this time and you decide you've had enough and shady comment back before excusing yourself, apologising to Marcus' mum before leaving. When Marcus gets home later on in the day, turns out he's already found out that you and his sister had a little disagreement. He's aware that you both don't get along so it wasn't a surprise. He comes home and you speak to him about it, him listening intently and trying to understand why you both can't get along. Even Marcus' comforting doesn't help, you feel frustrated by the situation and can't help the tears from welling up and he instantly pulls you into his chest and tries to make you feel better.

Pecking his lips, you silently nodded, before getting out of his embrace. Preparing yourself for a very tense girls dinner date... but to your suprised you weren't prepared for the worst.

As soon as you arrived things were already super tense. It was just any normal rashford family outing. His mum, melanie and sister in law, emma constantly trying to kill the tension, however no matter how hard they tried, the tension wasn't going anywhere!

"Not long yet then (y/n) till you officially become a rashford" melanie screeched, grabbing your hand causing tara to roll her eyes.

"I know urmm.. 1 month left to go i think" you stutted, taras constant stares and eye rolls slowly starting to set off your anxiety.

"Wowww you sound so excited" tara tutted "tara enough" his mum warb3d clearly seeing how stressed you have become.

"Its okay mel!" You whispered, giving her a small smile.

"I am so excited tara!" You smiled at your clearly unamused soon to be sister in law "however I can't lie i am pretty nervous, marriage is a huge step.. the next step in our relationship. I know you've never gone beyond the talking stage, but once you finally meet someone and you get married, you'll understand why I'm nervous"

Smiling to yourself as you see Tara's shocked expression, clearly taken back at your sudden burst of confidence. Emma and melanie feeling very proud that you finally stuck up for yourself after years of Tara's bullying behaviour.

However the victory didn't last long....

As soon as you picked up your glass of red wine, tara nudged your leg from under the table, causing you to let out a gasp as the substance soaked into your all white playsuit.

"Oh noooo what are shame" tara sarcastically whined "oh well atleast marcus can pay for it to be cleaned... hes use to paying for everything anyway! Girls like you cant even afford there own rent nevermind dry cleaning"

Without saying a word, you quietly grabbed your bag, giving mel and emma a small tear stained smile. You excused yourself from the lunch. You always knew tara disliked you because of your past. Your parents barley had anything, you didnt get as many opportunities as the average child does. Every step of your career has come with challenges... challenges that you had to overcome yourself. You wanted to be proud of your roots however it was hard to be proud of something that alot of people shooted down.

Hello! This is a broad question so it's fine you don't feel like answering. Do you ever get tired of fandom and its culture? I feel like sometimes there's nothing but discourse and arguments and just... it can be quite draining. Just wondered I'd ask you since you've been in a number of fandoms for a long time! I'm sure you've seen it all. Thank you for your time!!!

I think the last time I got tired of fandom was over 12 years ago. At that time, two things were true: 1) I was having some personal problems that meant I didn’t have a job, didn’t feel good about it, and didn’t have a lot of friends that could talk about things I wanted to talk about. 2) Fandom felt a lot more centered; it was easy to build communities and become a part of them. As a result, at that time, fandom was my main support network. Therefore, when certain aspects of fandom became unpleasant, I felt I had very few places to turn to. I eventually got a job, a lot more stable relationships, and several types of community. Fandom also dispersed onto many platforms, making it very hard to rely on fandom for social interaction. I still do get annoyed by some things in fandom, but when that happens, it’s very easy to dip into another corner of fandom that isn’t toxic or to walk away completely.

I will say that having participated in fandom for a long time has also given me a different perspective. Conversations about social justice--racism, misogyny, homophobia, ableism--as well as conversations about porn--what gets written, with which characters, what age and sex those characters are, how they’re treated, how this porn is posted and consumed--are conversations that have cycled through fandom since long before I was in it. I’ve learned a lot from these conversations, but after participating in them for years and listening to them for even longer, there’s not much more I can learn from random people on the internet. The same is true for issues with less of a social justice vibe--feedback culture, ship wars, fest etiquette, anonymous behavior, etc--I’ve seen it all before, and while I think these can be worthwhile conversations, I no longer feel a strong urge to participate all the time. Generally I feel like arguing on the internet has a smaller value for someone like me than listening, having compassion, modifying my behavior when necessary, and doing what I can irl and with my friends.

I have more to say about fandom cliques.

The other aspect of fandom that can grow wearisome, besides the cyclical debates, is the cliquish nature of fandom communities, and the way typical group behavior is exacerbated by the very fact of being online. Who is popular, who they like, what they say, who likes whom, who did what to whom, how everyone reacted to it--all of this can feel super important online in a way it doesn’t to me irl. I’d like to pretend I’m very classy and stay above all this, but that would be a lie. I have often wanted, in my fandom life, to be someone who has hordes of fandom friends, who leaves comments on everything they read, someone who recs with abandon, someone who runs fests, someone who replies to everyone and makes new people feel welcome and develops starter kits and makes memes everyone loves and invents all the fanon everyone uses etc etc.

Alas, my own social reticence prevents me from being that fan. I have tremendous problems with routine or anything that needs to be done regularly. This includes but is not limited to communicating with friends or people that interest me or people whose work I like. Basically, all the people who love me are people who are willing to keep reaching out to me even when I don’t always respond. I try to warn people about this and communicate clearly that it’s something I really struggle with, but it is not conducive to making friends.

Additionally, I have found that I struggle to feel a part of communities--partly because maintaining your status in a community means regularly being a part of it, but partly I have trouble identifying with most people. Fannish people share more of my interests than most people in the world, but even among fans, I often feel left out and excluded, an extra thumb on a hand that does beautiful things without me. These social difficulties isolate me, but they do have the benefit of insulating me. The one time I was almost in the middle of a fight about who wanted to be my fandom friend, I had the fortune to be so far out of the loop that I didn’t really know what the fuck was going on.

Anyways, the result of my personality is such that I mostly tend to look at fandom on the outside. I get pretty sad about this from time to time, but the times I have gotten deep into fandom have not gone particularly well for me. Either I’ve felt that feeling of exclusion I’ve mentioned before, or I noticed that others were being excluded--ie, I was for some reason included in The Popular Clique. This makes me intensely uncomfortable, and I’ve extricated myself in situations where I’ve felt that way. Unfortunately, fandom spaces that allow for cliques are also the places where you really get to know people and build community. As such, I really don’t make fandom friends easily. The few I do have are pretty much lifelong friends that I share a lot with besides fandom. My best friend is from fandom. My girlfriend is from fandom. Most of the friends I go to when I need to talk irl are from fandom. My original novel-writing partner is from fandom. These are the people I tend to talk to when I need to talk about fandom, though it can feel very lonely when I have a new fandom and no friends fall into it with me.

This is a long answer to say--fandom is exhausting if you’re really participating to the hilt, but given that I really mostly just write fics and answer asks, most of the time it’s chill. When I get deep into something I might join a discord or do a twitter, but I burn out of that pretty fast--though I sometimes do make friends that I keep forever after.

You've obviously spoke about the Ghost as a Superman figure within the larger context of Doctor Who but do you think the opposite is possible? A Doctor-like figure within a larger superhero setting?

There's been a couple of attempts, never quite as....jarring as the Ghost but that’s pretty much down to mad scientists and time travel being far more commonplace in superhero settings than overtly super-heroic figures are in Who. To the point the handful of times Who has played with that (Conundrum, Starfall, The Return of Doctor Mysterio) all draw at least some of their story out of the jarring presence of a superhero figure within the narrative. There’s a really nice sequence in Conundrum where the Doctor “explains” the presence of the superpowered figures in a way that reads like he’s as much kidding himself because he would like to think it’s possible as genuinely trying to explain how these people have gained their abilities. Which really feels like a deliberate building on “I wish...I wish I believed in wishing wells” given how Conundrum plays out. There’s obviously the conflation of Captain Britain’s Merlin and Who’s Merlin a couple of times, but that’s really overstated even if only in terms of Britain’s Merlin functionally different beast to the point any doctor connection is largely a minor detail as any attempt at creating a Doctor-like figure. I think then, when it comes to your Doctor-like figure the big thing that would distinguish them from other standard mad scientists and science heroes is the face changing, and basically none of your overtly doctor-influenced characters actually do anything with? Your big one in a standard setting is Professor Gamble in Power Man and Iron Fist #79, who really stands out in terms of being the only doctor-lite comic figure overtly building on Classic Who rather than Cultural Juggernaut David Tennant Doctor Who. Some overlap with Dr. Mysterio’s use of the Ghost in the conflation of the real and fictional but in very different directions; Gamble writing a fictitious account of his own life, dreadlox a fictitious account of the Incinerators. Gamble’s personal Dalek-stand in born of rogue temporal cleaning devices that have decided destroying space and time is the only way to clean everything. Where the overlap falls apart is the fact that Power Man and Iron Fist is arguably a far more flexible book at that point in its history than Who is by the point of Doctor Mysterio. So #79 is less of an out of genre moment so much as just more weird shit happening to Danny and Luke. As far as I know Gamble has popped up here and there since then, and is one of a fairly sizable amount of Who references across Marvel/Marvel UK (Yeah yeah we all know about Death’s Head, W.H.O. and aw that pish) The other big, very very direct and direct to Cultural Juggernaut David Teannant Doctor Who is...weirdly…Qubit in Irredeemable. Which is barely relevant to this question because it’s really not a standard superhero setting beyond the superficial, but bares some comment given it’s arguably the most prominent of recent takes and really hard to ignore how much he’s just David Tennant with a James from Twin Peaks forehead and LEGION hair. Also worth commenting on how fucking strange his entire role in the arse end of Irredeeamble is given the final 20 or so issues largely devolve into “The Tenth Doctor fights Evil Superman.” Given how little that aspect is remarked upon, and how incongruous it is with the broader attempt at presenting an Evil Superman story that gradually pairs back to show that the character’s never really been evil superman because for him to have that “turn” you basically have to have it be the tip of an iceberg that sketches back decades and ultimate reveals the character was never really Superman in any way beyond the iconographic. So the fact that happens while he’s fighting David Tennant is really strange, though I do like so much of that spilling out of the Plutonian forcing Quibit into one of those big, painful NuWho moral decisions, but I really struggle to care about Irredeemable beyond thinking Incorruptible was generally the stronger book towards the end. You’ve also got things like the Allred/Slott Silver Surfer that overtly drew influence from contemporary

Doctor Who, but it’s building on an already distinctive character so it can never really function as a direct one for one. I know, vaguely, that Ben 10 had a Doctor Who figure. But having never watched the show I’m not sure how he appears within the show and tbh I don’t care enough to look into it. I suppose the thing is that Doctor-lite easily slides into a superhero setting without losing too much and without drawing too much attention to the homage while someone like the Ghost is, by basic nature, designed to be at least somewhat strange within the larger normality of the show’s present day. The closest point of comparison I can think of is something like Silver Sentry in TMNT; There’s really nothing in TMNT or Doctor WHo that precludes the existence of “proper” superheroes, nether show is exactly the height of realism but the sudden introduction of basically superman presents a fundamental shift in their respective idiosyncrasies. I imagine people would be tempted to draw a comparison between the Milligan Shade the Changing Man revamp under Vertigo and Who, and given it’s MIlligan I’m sure there was some influence their even if only in terms of an English-coded otherworldly figure who undergoes startling changes across the run, but tbh it’s basically a passing resemblance and kinda overlooks the fact that Shade kinda hilariously preempts a lot of where Who as a franchise goes during the 90s and 2000s. It’s presentation of Shade’s changes as far-more psychologically damaging than classic who’s regeneration compared to some overlap with how NuWho treats the event particularly, but also in terms of the EDAs there’s a fairly notable arc where Shade gives up his heart to cope with a torrent of emotional loss and devastated worlds. Make of that what you will. I still haven’t answered the fucking question have I, right since you’ve asked me you’re going to get my shite, because here’s how I’d do it. There’s only one way really, one word Metalek Because the fucking rule don’t they? Morrison’s first, best Dalek-homage. The Xenoformers from Galaxy X, sentient construction vehicles serving masters that no longer exist. Terraforming the Galaxy one world at a time. Bow before Metalek. So yeah, those guys exist and they’re fucking great. I have...more thoughts than I’d like to admit about the “Metalek Empire” that’s really just self-indulgent pish. But that’s DC comics. So they exist, and they present what’s probably the best approach to a Doctor-alike in a superhero setting. In the same way the Ghost might as well be Superman in a setting where he isn’t the soul focus, you’re Doctor Who figure might as well just be Doctor Who in a setting where, building on the fact the key elements aren’t that notable, they really don’t stand out that much, so what then? Well he’s the mad scientist, but a good mad scientist. Counterpart to all the lunatics and madmen with their metal monsters, who is he? Who’s the grant morrison character fighting the dreaded metalek menace when they aren’t intruding on Superman’s narrative? Who spent decades trapped on earth, leading a reformed STAR Labs into a strange, wonderful new world? It’s Leo Quantum isn’t it. Basically, Leo’s one of those characters like Lan-Shin in Smashes the Klan or John Henry Irons who click perfectly into place with the larger idea of Superman’s social network. And given I’m an egotist, I’m going to do what I like with him building out of that admittedly bullshit old idea he’s future lex back to repent. If the Ghost is a version of Superman who’s world exists in the shadow of the Doctor, Leo would be a version of the Doctor that exists in the Shadow of Superman. He’s not literally Lex, he’s your Kristin Wells/Legion/DC One Million figure, possibly a future Luthor, possibly the first child of the Luthor/Kent families coming together in the far off 42nd century. A temporal adventurer who’s early experiments caused all his potential futures to crash down on top of him, transforming him into a hypertime singularity. His technicolor dreamcoat crafted from fifth world

wondertech, regulating his body to ensure each hypertime strand gets its time in sun while keeping the darker fringes in line….most of the time. Or at least, that’s what I’d do, feel free to discard this as mental bastard bullshit.

DUDE. the latest chapter was so. INCREDIBLE ?

your words flow as amazingly and smoothly as ever and so does your dialogue, and, well, Everything, but i especially LOVE so much the ways you're slowly weaving more about the mysteries you've set up into the story as well - c!quackity and c!tubbos past, what happened with c!q and c!techno, c!ranboos Everything, you're SO so good at giving the reader just enough information to have a growing understanding of what happened while still being intriguingly vague enough to WANT those answers. and sure, even though one could kinda infer some things based on already existing canon, like who's c!tommys abuser, who is it that seemingly hurt c!quackity and c!tubbo, etc, it's still written so INTERESTINGLY that you want to know it ALL no matter what!! and the little details you write into c!tubbos internal monologue - like how he's skilled in sneaking around (if i recall the line correctly), the palpable panic he felt when c!q tapped his shoulder, it feels so Realistic and just. SO so good

speaking of c!q and you knew this was coming i am already obsessed he seems like such a Fucking Bastard and i Love him. this passage in particular, as well as the paragraph after it: "Because Quackity doesn’t apologize for things anymore, and Tubbo knows that, because he’s one of the only people who saw the days where Quackity would, always and all the time.", actually made me have to stop reading for a second to process it because. Holy Shit (/POS) Y'KNOW? and that leads back to what i said about you being great with setting up mysteries just - MAN!!!!!! i also must legally thank you for the Crumbs and i don't even have to clarify which at this point do i. i am feasting on them like a starving rabid raccoon. girl this is literally a c!beeduo fic i don't know why i am so obsessed with your c!tntduo Already when the fic Isn't Even About THEM I. i think there's something wrong with me. that's ok though ☺

im genuinely super happy to hear that because, due to like, as u said, pre-existing canon, and the fact that cough syrup is based off of the characters, it is kind of hard to build a mystery up because you can already guess some of the character relations. i tried to make some of them unique and all, but even the ones that come up later in the story still have some tie to the DSMP plot. it's important to me that the characters in CS are very clearly inspired off of the DSMP characters, but it's also good to know that the story isn't too predictable

hearing that it's realistic too means literally everything because, like. that's my main goal. if i write a piece of work and every part of it is bad except its realism, i will still take it as a win. because that's the thing i find most fascinating and fun about fic writing, and especially in terms of the topics that i am not too acquainted with, it's good to know that i'm realistic there :]

i will pat myself on the back here and say that the quackity line you quoted is one of my favorite lines i've written thus far. the other line i like a LOT, you'll see it in chapter 7, also has to do with him so. we can be very sane together :)

NO HONESTLY LIKE. i love c!tntduo and idk when i will get around to writing fics specifically dedicated to them, though it's In My Plans Of Stuff To Do, so i mostly want to explore them here. it's only really gonna be seen through tubbo and maybe ranboo's lens, but still. they're important to me. and there's a lot of stuff about their characters in this fic that make them both click well together and absolutely not work out. it's interesting to write :D

okay so i literally had to make a list of all the dcoms i consider underrated and then narrow down a top 5. theres lots of dcoms that i love, but that i think got the right amount of attention and care (like lemonade mouth and the teen beach movies, for example), so this list just focuses on ones that deserved more hype for their quality level.

5. The Cheetah Girls: One World (2008)

okay so even as i type this i feel like a hypocrite. i have only watched this movie one time. BUT i can acknowledge that its one of the most criminally underrated dcoms ever, tons of people didnt watch it simply because raven wasnt in it. thats why i avoided it as a child, and i didnt get around to watching it until i did my big dcom binge in 2016. and it was so good. theres a really long post floating somewhere around tumblr full of specifics on why its actually the best cheetah girls movie (my favorite is the second one purely out of nostalgia), so to paraphrase some points from that post:

its a solid example of cultural appreciation, rather than appropriation, as the girls go and learn about bollywood and indian culture together

the indian characters arent treated like props or unimportant sides, they get their own agency and storylines that are important

the songs are good!!!

basically this movie was overlooked and slept on even though in terms of role modeling and social value, and just like the first two cheetah girls movies it was important and impactful.

4. Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure (2011)

okay so as someone whos very neutral and occasionally negative-leaning towards the hsm franchise (mostly bc its overhyped and not really representative of all dcoms), i was pleasantly surprised by sharpays fabulous adventure. this is another one that i know lots of people skipped right over and dont hold with as much esteem as the main hsm franchise, and that doesnt sit right with me.

i do not agree with the “uwu sharpay was the real victim in hsm” arguments bc in their efforts to look galaxy brained the people who say that overlook the fact that she was a rich white woman who used her power and status to exercise control over opportunities that should have been fairly and freely available for all; they were not “making a mockery of her theater” in the first movie, they were literally just kids who wanted to try out a new school activity that everyone was supposed to be allowed to participate in; and despite allegedly learning her lesson and singing we’re all in this together with everyone at the end of the first movie, she literally showed no growth in the second movie as she fostered an openly hostile environment and favored troy so heavily that it literally cost him his friends, all as part of yet another jealous plan to take things away from people who already have less than her. she was NOT the victim in the main franchise, and she did not seem to exhibit any growth or introspection either.

and that!!! is why sharpays fabulous adventure was so important. in focusing on sharpay as the main character, they finally had to make her likeable. they did this by showing actual real growth and putting her outside of her sphere of influence and control. we saw true vulnerability from her, instead of the basic ass “mean girl is sad bc shes actually just super insecure” trope (cough cough radio rebel), and this opened us up to finally learn about and care about her character. throughout the movie we see her learn, from her love interests example, how to care for others and be considerate. she faces actual adversity and works through it, asking herself what she truly wants and what shes capable of. and in the end, when she finally has her big moment, we’re happy for her bc she worked hard to get there. she becomes a star through her own merit and determination, rather than through money and connections. this movie is not perfect by any means, but it is severely underrated for the amount of substance it adds to sharpays character.

3. The Swap (2016)

okay i know im gonna get shit for this but thats why its on this list!!! just like sharpays fabulous adventure, its not perfect and definitely misses the mark sometimes, but it deserves more attention and love for all the things it did get right!

the swap follows two kids who accidentally switch bodies because of their emotional attachment to their dead/absent parents’ phones. and while i normally HATE the tv/movie trope of a dead parent being the only thing that builds quick sympathy for a young character, they definitely expanded well enough to where we could root for these kids even without the tragedy aspect. we see them go through their daily struggles and get a feel for their motivations as characters pretty well. as a body switching movie, we expect it to be all goofy and wacky and lighthearted, but it moves beyond that in unexpected ways.

the reason the swap is on this list is for its surprisingly thoughtful commentary on gender roles. its by no means a feminist masterpiece, and its not going to radicalize kids who watch it, but it conveys a subtle, heartfelt message that deserves more appreciation. the characters struggle with the concept of gender in a very accurate way for their age, making off-base comments and feeling trapped by the weight of expectations they cant quite put their finger on. we watch them feel both at odds with and relieved by the gender roles they are expected and allowed to perform in each others bodies, and one of the most interesting parts of the movie to me is their interactions with the other kids around them. as a result of their feeling out of place in each others environments, the kids inadvertently change each others friendships for the better by introducing new communication styles and brave authenticity. 

the value of this movie is the subtle, but genuine way it shows the characters growing through being given the space to act in conflicting ways to their expected norms. ellie realizes that relationships dont have to be complex, confusing, and painful, and that its okay to not live up to appearances and images. jack learns that emotional expression is good, healthy, and especially essential to the grieving process. one of the most powerful scenes in the movie comes at the end where, after ellie confronts jacks dad in his body, jack returns as himself to a very heartfelt apology from his father for being too hard on him; the explicit message (”boys can cry”) is paired with an open expression of love and appreciation for his kids that he didnt feel comfortable displaying until his son set an example through honest communication. this is such an empowering scene and overall an empowering movie for kids who may feel stuck in their expected roles, as it sets a positive example for having the courage to break the restrictive societal mold. for its overall message of the importance of introspection and emotional intelligence, the swap is extremely underrated.

2. Freaky Friday (2018)

this is my favorite dcom, and probably my favorite movie at this point. ive always assigned a lot of personal value to this movie (and i love every freaky friday in general), for the message of selfless familial love and understanding. i know i can get carried away talking about this topic; i got an anon ask MONTHS ago asking me about the freaky friday movies and i wrote a super super long detailed response that i never posted bc i didnt quite finish talking about the 2018 movie. and thats bc on a personal level, i cant adequately convey all the love i have for this movie. so i will try to keep this short.

first lets state the obvious: the reason people dont like this movie is bc its not the lindsay lohan version. and i get that, to an extent, bc i also love the 2003 version and its one of my ultimate comfort movies, and grew up watching it and ive seen it a billion times. i even watched it a couple days ago. but the nostalgia goggles that people have on from the early 2000s severely clouds their judgement of the wonderful 2018 remake.

yes, the 2018 version is dorky, overly simplistic plot wise, a bit stiff at times, and super cheesy like any dcom. the writing isnt 100% all the time. the narrative takes a couple confusing turns. the song biology probably shouldnt have been included. i understand this. but at the heart of it all, this movies value is love. and its edge over all the other freaky friday movies is the songs.

on a personal level, the movie speaks heavily to me. i cried very early into my first viewing of the movie bc i got to see dara renee, a dark-skinned, non-skinny actress, playing the mean popular girl on disney channel. that has never happened before. growing up, i saw the sharpays and all the other super thin white women get to be the “popular” girls on tv, and ultimately they were taken down in the end for being mean, but that doesnt change the fact that they were given power and status in the first place for being conventionally beautiful. so, watching dara renee strut around confidently and sing about being the queen bee at this high school got to me immediately. and in general, the supporting cast members of color really mean a lot to me in this movie. we get to see adam, an asian male love interest for the main character. we have a second interracial relationship in the movie with katherines marriage to mike. ellies best friend karl is hispanic. and we see these characters have depth and plot significance, we see them show love, care, and passion for the things they value. the brown faces in this movie are comforting to me personally. additionally, the loving, blended family dynamic is important to me as someone in a close-knit, affectionate step-family.

but on a more general level, this movie is underrated for its skillful musical storytelling and the way it conveys all kinds of love and appreciation. in true freaky friday fashion, we watch ellie and katherine stumble and misstep in their attempts to act like each other. its goofy and fun. but through it all, the music always captures the characters’ intimate thoughts and feelings. the opening song gives us a meaningful view into ellie and katherines relationship and the fundamental misunderstandings that play a role in straining their connection. ellie sings about how she thinks her mom wants her to be perfect, and her katherine sings about all the wonderful traits she sees in her daughter and how she wants her to be more open and self assured. this is meaningful bc even as theyre mad at each other, the love comes through. the songs continue to bring on the emotional weight of the story, as ellie sings to her little brother about her feelings of hurt and abandonment in her fathers absence. the song “go” and its accompanying hunt scene always make me cry bc of the childlike wonder and sense of adventure that it brings. for the kids, its a coming of age, introspective song. for katherine who gets to participate in ellies body, its a reminder of youth and the rich, full life her daughter has ahead of her. she is overcome with excitement, both from getting to be a teenager again for a day, and from the realization that her daughter has a support network and passions that are all her own. today and ev’ry day, the second to last song, is the culmination of the lessons learned throughout the movie, a mother and daughters tearful commitment to each other to love, protect, and understand one another. the line “if today is every day, i will hold you and protect you, i wont let this thing affect you” gets to me every time. even when things are hard and dont go according to plan, they still agree, in this moment, to be there for each other. and thats what all freaky friday stories are ultimately about.

freaky friday 2018 is a beautiful, inclusive, subversive display of familial love, sacrifice, and selflessness, and it is underrated and overlooked because of its more popular predecessor.

1. Let It Shine (2012)

this is another one of my favorite dcoms and movies in the whole world. unlike the other movies on this list, it is not the viewers themselves that contribute to the underrated-ness of this movie. disney severely under-promoted and under-hyped this movie in comparison to its other big musical franchises, and i will give you five guesses as to why, but youll only need one!

let it shine is the most beautifully, unapologetically black dcom in the whole collection. (i would put jump in! at a notable second in this category, but that one wasnt underrated). this movie was clearly crafted with care and consideration. little black kids got to see an entire dcom cast that represented them. the vernacular used in the script is still tailored mostly to white-favoring audiences, but with some relevant slang thrown in there. in short, the writers got away with the most blackness they were allowed to inject into a disney channel project.

the story centers on rap music and its underground community in atlanta, georgia. it portrays misconceptions surrounding rap, using a church setting as a catalyst for a very real debate surrounding a generational, mutlicultural conflict. this was not a “safe” movie for disney, given its emphasis on religious clashes with contemporary values. it lightly touches on issues of image policing within the black community (cyrus’s father talking about how “our boys” are running around with sagging pants and “our girls” are straying away from god), which is a very real and pressing problem for black kids who feel the pressure (from all sides) of representing their whole race with their actions. its a fun, adorable story about being yourself and staying true to your art, but also a skillful representation of struggles unique to black and brown kids and children from religious backgrounds.

on top of crafting a fun, wholesome, thoughtful narrative and likeable protagonists, let it shine brought us what is in my opinion the BEST dcom soundtrack of all time. every single song is a bop. theyre fast, fun, and lyrically engaging. “me and you” is my favorite disney channel song of all time due to its narrative significance; i will never forget my first time watching the movie and seeing that big reveal unfold onstage, as a conversation and a plot summary all wrapped into a song. the amount of thought and care that went into the music of this movie should have been rewarded with a level of attention on par with that of other musical dcoms.

if disney channel had simply cared about let it shine more, it couldve spanned franchises and sold songs the way that other musical dcoms have drawn in success. i would have loved for a sequel that explored and fleshed out cyrus’s neighborhood a little bit more, and maybe dipped into that underground scene they caught a glimpse of. i wanted a follow up on the changed church community once cyrus’s father started supporting his sons vision. i want so much more for these characters and this world than disney gave them in just one movie.

for its bold, unabashed representation of blackness and religion, subtle, nuanced presentation of race-specific issues, strong, likeable characters, and complex, thoughtful songs, let it shine is the most underrated dcom.

B.) are any of your stories based on personal experience? yes, a few! first, there’s inchworm, my first ever ao3 post. i don’t like to talk about that one (so i’m not linking it), since the whole situation was really not that deep. the second one i thought of was comfort crowd, a fic i wrote back in 2019 based off of my friendship with the first guy i was ever actually in love with. that’s another one i don’t read back because everyone in the comments talked about how cute they were and how good they were together and then my “theo” turned out to be the biggest asshole on the planet 😪 oh well, it’s all good now - just very weird and slightly embarrassing to reread knowing what actually would happen to them if i didn’t make up the ending LMAO

D.) is there a song or playlist to associate with [insert fic?] once again, yes - for one of them. my favorite fic that i’ve written is teachers’ salary and that one doesn’t have any music associated with it, but my second favorite fic, if i could never give you peace, is heavily inspired by ‘peace’ by taylor swift. 

F.) share a snippet of one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

Theo pretty much puts Liam in the passenger seat of his truck himself - there’s no other way to describe the way he’d opened the door, shoved him in, and even gone as far as to reach across his lap and buckle his seatbelt for him - and starts to drive without saying a single word. The truck moves a little too fast through the night for Liam’s comfort now that he’s not the one in control, but he doesn’t dare say anything about it. The cab is filled with the swirling storm of mixed emotions, but Theo’s expressionless mask has cracked since they left the scene, and Liam isn’t stupid - he’s mad.

When Theo finally speaks, his voice is a dangerous kind of quiet that Liam’s never heard him use before. “Why the fuck,” He hisses lowly, voice shaking on the last word. He keeps his eyes trained straight ahead and his grip on the steering wheel goes white-knuckled. “Would you do that?”

Theo sounds rough and strained, and Liam’s first thought is that he hadn’t sounded like that at all just a few hours ago. It makes his throat go tight. He goes to say something, although he’s not sure what, but Theo’s senses are apparently super-tuned in and he cuts him off before a word can even begin to form on his tongue.

“Shut up,” Theo bites, slipping into clear anger. “Shut up. Just shut up. Don’t fucking say anything to me right now, just be fucking quiet. Liam, why the hell would you do that?”

Liam knows he’s not supposed to answer, but the anguish in Theo’s voice is way too much. The first words out of his mouth are definitely the wrong ones, but he doesn’t care. “You cannot seriously be mad at me right now,” Liam says indignantly, suddenly angry himself.

“Oh, try me,” Theo growls.

“For what?” Liam demands. “For- for trying to help you? For letting you live a normal life for once-?”

“For being a self-sacrificing dumbass!” Theo yells over him. “You could’ve gotten yourself hurt, or- or killed, or- fuck, Liam, that wasn’t your shit to deal with!” He cries, and Liam honest-to-God laughs.

It’s dry and hard and hurtful, but it feels just right coming out of his mouth. “Oh, that’s rich, coming from you,” He spits.

The blow lands just like he wants it to and Theo looks at him for the first time since they left, lips still parted and still speechless. His mouth opens and closes a few times but nothing comes out, and Theo turns back forward and slaps his hand hard on the steering wheel frustratedly. That hand makes its way into his hair and stays there, and the speed picks back up again.

They stay quiet.

i’m not very PROUD of this dialogue scene from ‘if i could never give you peace,’ per say, but i do really like it. i always love writing the tension after the climax of the story, and theo’s frustration here was really fun.

THE KING: ETERNAL MONARCH REVIEW

Spoilers ahead!!! Read at your own risk. Once again, I am not an expert and these are my personal opinions. If you have disagreements, let's talk it over. Don't judge me, let's judge the show together instead and have an understanding.

For the first drama that I am going to review, I chose The King: Eternal Monarch. A lot of viewers who supported the show with all of their hearts could still not get over its ending. Others who like to binge-watch are relieved because they can finally watch the entire series without waiting for a new episode to air. While some are still mulling over about watching it. Well, I hope I could help you with this review.

• Introduction to the Drama

Short gist:

The story revolves around Lee Gon, present King of Kingdom of Corea. He witnessed his father’s death when he was young, an incident that haunted him until he grew older. Due to unfortunate circumstances, a legendary flute with powers called Manpasikjeok that can open different worlds was cut in half. He was able to get hold half of the flute, while the other half was obtained by Lee Lim, his uncle who killed his father. Lee Lim had been going back and forth two different worlds, plotting foul pursuits to fulfill his evil desires, and disrupting the peace between the two worlds. In order to restore balance and order, Lee Gon also traveled between worlds, meeting Jeong Tae Eul who soon became a significant person in his life.

If you've been watching Korean Dramas for quite a while now, you must be familiar with some of the characters of The King: Eternal Monarch, especially the lead.

If you call yourself a k-drama fan and you don't know who Lee Minho is, give yourself a slap (just kidding, please don't take that seriously). Lee Minho has a good reputation because of his experience, acting skills and obviously, his gorgeous face. He has an impressive list of successful dramas and movies! Most of us probably knew him through his breakthrough role in Boys Over Flowers.

Meanwhile, Kim Go Eun, despite being fairly new to small screen (she first started appearing in movies), is also highly distinguished by a lot of k-drama fans. In all three dramas she starred in, including The King, she always got the lead role. His leading men are no joke either. And because of Kim Go Eun, many of us still wants to be the goblin's bride.

Among the cast also includes the familiar faces of Woo Do Hwan, Kim Kyung Nam, Jung Eun Chae, and Lee Jung Jin.

Anyway, I'll try to share every thought I have from the first time I watched it until it ended. I will also try not to give so much spoilers because the drama just ended. I will talk first about my experience watching it and then I will list at the very bottom some of the issues I have and that list contains major spoilers so watch out for that. As you notice, I always warn you with spoilers using red font color.

• The Experience

When I watched the first teaser of the drama, I got intrigued and a little confused. What worlds are they talking about? Do they have super powers? Is this a historical drama? Questions were instantly formed in my head.

It also reminded me of the drama Queen In Hyun's Man because of a similar scene where the leading man is riding his horse in the middle of the city and finding his woman. But that's just it, the two dramas are completely different. I just mentioned it because others may have felt the same way.

I don't usually watch dramas while it's still fresh. I wait for about two to three weeks before the schedule of the ending so I can binge watch without waiting so much. When I watched The King, there were already 12 episodes available on Netflix. Usually, I would finish 12 episodes in 1-3 days, and if the drama is really good and it's MY STYLE (i said that in an obviously fake Korean accent), I could watch it for an entire day.

However, I finished those 12 episodes in 2 weeks...

Why??? Why did it take me that long???

I wouldn't say I was bored, it's just that during the first few episodes, nothing caught my interest yet. I wasn't convinced that it was a good drama. There was nothing special and I didn't know what to look forward to that's why I couldn't watch it continuously. I got lazy. The pace was slow and the story build up was a little stagnant. It was too slow that I even started watching a long length saeguk just so I can watch something else.

I could have skipped some parts and dropped it but I continued watching and gave it a chance. Though it was a good thing that I didn't stop because as I watched more episodes, the story actually became more exciting. Finally, I saw some progress. I started to get invested in the drama after the eighth episode. That's when the story felt more alive. Finally, there were revelations, more conflicts arose, more emotions were shown, and the story got deeper. I began to appreciate the drama. However, I still don't like the fact that it took me 8 episodes before I started to like it.

• Points that I Liked About the Drama

1. The plot seemed like it's going to be too science fiction-y but it's just the right amount. I was worried that it might be too much for me to handle but it was just okay (i am a potato who dislikes thinking so much, but that depends on my mood lololol). I liked how there's a mix of history in the drama, as well as of politics but it still feels modern. There is a balance.

2. The distinction between the Kingdom of Corea and Republic of Korea is impressive. It's obvious that they put a lot of effort in building their vision of KOC to life.

3. Many people were saying that it's hella confusing and so much was going on. I don't think so. They actually made it easy for viewers to understand about parallel worlds. You don't have to study science facts just to get this drama's concept. I think the slow pace did its job well in this part.

4. The story is unpredictable. You never know what's going to happen next, that's the strength of The King's concept. Because of the two different worlds and the crazy number of characters, there could be a lot of possibilities and backstories.

5. The action scenes are commmendable. I liked the action scenes, the one during the last episode is probably my favorite.

• Points that I Didn't Like About the Drama

1. The slow pace. I don't think I still need to explain more but it totally ruined my whole experience of watching the drama.

2. Many characters didn't leave much impact. Their acting was great, however, I don't see a lot of personalities that standout. The most remarkable ones for me are the characters played by Woo Do Hwan. The other characters, especially the lead, the prime minister and the traitor were okay, too. The others were just bland and years from now, I probably won't remember most of them.

• The Ending (spoiler alert!)

The ending was good. It didn't feel rushed and everyone had a separate ending of their own. I just wished there was more Nari and Eunsup / Yeong and Seung A moment in the end, the conclusion was fine though. I don't like that Prime Minister Koo ended up in jail but Luna became a cop...

I just have one issue regarding the ending that they decided on. In the end they didn't show if Tae Eul became a queen. Well, it would be weird if she became one considering there is Luna in KOC. They can't be together in ROK, too because Gon's counterpart was able to live. So... what? They just kept traveling whenever they have time? Because if that's the case, doesn't that mean they will hide their relationship forever??? I liked that they ended up together but I wish they also kept this in mind. Because it kinda makes me sad. Lol.

• Final Thoughts

Overall, it was alright. It was over-hyped by netizens due to the amazing casting and promotions, but it's not bad at all.

Would I watch it again? No.

Would I recommend it? Yes. Give it a try! I honestly thought I wouldn't like it but I still did, even if it took me 8 episodes, I wouldn't say it wasn't worth it. If you enjoy fantasy dramas with complicated twists and conflicts, this drama is for you. Just have patience and prepare yourself mentally when you've reached the middle. This drama is gloomy and a little heavy, too. It was serious and has a very few humorous scenes.

There are 13 songs in total and everything is so good! I wish I got to hear more of the songs in the drama, some were just played briefly. I swear every song makes me feel things. Choosing just 5 songs is really hard. If you don't watch dramas but love music, give these a listen!!!

Now I'll move on to some of my "issues". This section isn't really what you think. The word "issues" is just intriguing ㅋㅋㅋ but this is just a compilation of my opinions, observations, feelings and other stuff no one might care about in the series. If you have answers for my questions or if you can explain it for me, please enlighten me. Major spoiler ahead!!!

• Issues

1. During the time when Lee Gon was time traveling and finally got back to Repuplic of Korea, it probably took him a lot of time, right? He even took his time to take care of Tae Eul in the hospital. I wish they also showed what was happening in Kingdom of Corea during that time because he's a king and his absence might have caused a ruckus in his kingdom. I can even picture the palace lady Noh getting really worried as Lee Gon travels. The moment he came back, they only gave him updates as if everything was okay.

But since they didn't show it, I guess it is safe to assume that nothing much happened in his kingdom back then. 🤷‍♀️

2. When Gon and Tae Eul met again in Gwanghwamun, why did Tae Eul hug him? In my understanding, at that period of time, Tae Eul only met him twice—once when she was 5 and once when she was 27. So why did she hug him suddenly as if she knows he's going to be a significant person in her life? Their dialogue when they met again when she was 27 wasn't even enough for her to act that way.

3. I hope they also gave Nari more lines and importance. Maybe it's just me, but at first, I thought she and her KOC counterpart would have more significant roles. When I think of it, even without her, the story could still go on. Though this is just a minor issue. ✌

4. Prime Minister Koo. She was a villain, but I didn't really hate her until the last 4-5 episodes (can't recall the exact episode, sorry), though I wouldn't say I hated her so much. I actually liked her at first! She's ambitious, fierce, independent and intelligent. She just got blinded by greed.

My issue here is, am I really supposed to feel like that? In my opinion, her character has the potential to become more heinous and despiteful. I was wondering why they didn't turn her into someone like that? She was just greedy, bitchy, a little sly and annoying.

5. Lee Gon's and Tae Eul's love for each other was a little shallow. Sure, the man who saved Lee Gon when he was a child, had Tae Eul's ID. But how sure was Lee Gon that the woman who owns the I.D. is not a villain? The woman in the ID could lead him to the man who saved him, yes, but it still bugs me how easily they fell in love especially on Lee Gon's part. Maybe I'm just thinking too much. I am sorry. 😅

In spite of that, I still liked their love progression. I didn't ship them that hard but their chemistry wasn't cringey and forced.

6. The scene where Lee Gon gave Tae Eul flowers and then left, was a little confusing. It didn't break my heart, too. I just felt a little sad while watching that scene because Kim Go Eun's acting was good.

7. Who the f is thay yoyo boy??? My guts tell me he's a part of the flute or something because he knows a lot. But I wish it was explained more. It looked weird how he just suddenly appears sometimes and suddenly talks some sense. He remains a mystery.

8. Why the f is Jeong Tae Eul a flat earther??? Well, at least she had a character development in the end. It just annoyed me lmao

9. I don't get why people keep comparing The King: Eternal Monarch to Goblin. Why??? They don't even have the same plot or concept.

10. Court lady Noh was from Republic of Korea... What? Was that necessary?

Anyway I hate how tumblr wasn't able to save my draft when I was writing additional content. I lost half of it and it makes me furious!!! I had to redo the draft but I can no longer remember some of the things I wrote. I am sad because I lost something that can't be brought back again. This experience earned me a lesson.
