but one of the most annoying recent fandom trends is forcing characters into this nuclear family dynamic and the way it's made shipping discourse unbearable. "alexei's the dad, bob yelena and ava are the big siblings and bob is the little brother," on paper, is a harmless headcanon. the problem is the weaponization of these family headcanons to fuel ship wars.

bob and yelena have a deep bond in thunderbolts. you can interpret it as a sibling dynamic. you can also interpret it as romantic or queerplatonic or literally whatever you want. the problem is the same people who call bob yelena's "little brother" are simultaneously saying that any romantic interpretation of their characters is "incestuous weirdo behavior."

and while boblena is the ship that's taking the most heat right now, i've been seeing hostility towards any variation of any thunderbolts ships. john/ava, john/bob, bucky/alexei, bob/void (which, lmfao, is SUCH a typical ship to me that people getting up in arms about it just proves we've let too many normies into fandom spaces). even yelena/kate is catching strays right now. and it doesn't have to be this way.

again, can we not? just say you're not into any of the ships and move on with your life.

these are not siblings. these are grown adults who grew to care about each other after experiencing traumatic events. "found family" trope has gotten so out of control it genuinely makes fandom less fun.

Less funny is the fact they were so successful at it — regardless of the merits (or lack thereof) of any of those projects — that it ended up getting the production of the actual Wicked movie delayed by more than a decade (because it would ironically have looked like a copycat and probably faded into the background if it had come out back when Disney was pumping out knockoffs every fucking year).

something something bucky understanding the fear of yourself, of something that is technically you but isnt and what it can and has done. the fear that at any moment it could take over and make you something no longer human while youre trapped inside your own mind. the being used and seen as only a weapon (albit bobs was shorter lived but still horrible it happened), them both being abused and wanting to be better but not knowing how or if they even could.

maybe what started out as bucky awkwardly trying to comfort bob when hes having one of his lows turns into a regular thing of them being there for each other. when bucky wakes up from another nightmare, he knows he can just go sit in silence or talk with bob, the other more than willing to just yap to help as a distraction or just be there as a comforting presence. maybe because bucky heals faster and can take a lot more punches without it being fatal, he helps train bob to physically fight without overusing his strength and doing unnecessary damage to someone, or just learning the basics so if theres a situation where he cant use his powers, he will at least be able to hold his own for a bit.

maybe what starts off as semi acquainted friends who can be a comfort for each other sometimes and training partner turns to more casual meet ups and a closer bond. instead of only spending one on one time together when they need a shoulder, they actively just hang out. bucky may not have been there from the start like yelena, ava or j*hn, but hes here now
