As someone who’s highly critical of AI but tests out the technology periodically, I think people on both sides of the debate overestimate the effectiveness of AI, which only helps AI companies bs market.

So let me break down the points one by one as someone who is hoping the bubble will burst any day now. I’m going to use Chat GPT as shorthand for “text ais” because they all work the same.

Putting it below a read more because this ended up really long.

Cheating is easier with AI, but text-based AIs are at their core very advanced phone autocompletes. If the technology wasn’t being pushed as actual intelligence now, students would still eventually get their hands on a less-environmentally devastating version of the technology fine-tuned to their writing style. Chat GPT is tuned to the writing style of slop article writers, and also can’t cite sources, so isn’t impossible to catch. Teachers just have to make sure that they don’t catch non-American or neurodivergent students in the crossfire, which can be achieved in personal essays by something as simple as “in this essay, cite exactly 3 excerpts from any source, and list your sources”. Because then the student at least has to read what Chat GPT is doing.

All the text based ais promote themselves as an information-gathering resource. This is misinformation the companies create to inflate their stocks. It can only give you the statistically most likely information, which may be true or false depending on how you word your question and how much the company’s actively combatting misinformation on the topic to avoid bad press. Google’s implementation of ai summaries is to avoid paying newspapers in regions where you have to pay newspapers to republish their work, which is what they were doing for their previous summaries. As they are frequently rewording newspaper articles, I hope they get sued and lose in those regions.

It’s probably going to come out in 5 years that most AI chatbots for dating purposes are purposefully trained to extract money from their victims. Being able to talk to a chatbot programmed to act like blorbo from your shows, even without the likely malicious programming, discourages human interaction, but the people using this are likely not interacting with real people anyway.

Artists will largely get their jobs back when corporations with IP start suing the fuck out of AI art models for letting people make fanart of their characters doing not-family friendly things. If any praxis can be done with AI art, bringing it to litigious corporate attention that it can be used to tarnish their reputation. For example:

Electricity and water use is mainly on training AI, not for using a pre-trained model. The AI companies are actively looking to reduce this usage, not for environmental reasons, but for cost-cutting. Crypto (and by extension, NFTs), unlike AI, depends on ever-increasing environmental impact. And Amazon runs more databases just as inefficiently. It’s an industry-wide problem

Let’s not be reactionary about AI. Instead, we should be pointing out that the technology is ill-suited to the task. AI writing is trained on slop, and is being trained on AI slop. AI art is mediocre at best, and cannot make complex images, or images with crowds, or insects, or baby birds… And the art comes out muddy to boot, needing brightening to look good. (Look how dingy weed-smoking Mickey is.) AI videos are laughable, simultaneously basically moving static images and the most uncanny valley thing you’ve ever seen. Deepfakes only work because they’re fairly minor edits of original images that can frequently be found, and frequently need hand-tuning to be convincing, making it a tool rather than a plug and play generator.

But let’s talk about the most developed technology, code. The copyright argument for code ai is irrelevant, because there’s a wealth of free and open source code to be scraped. (Some of it is likely stolen but that’s neither here nor there). People are, unfortunately, being fired and replaced by “vibe coders” who don’t know how to code but can prompt engineer code. However, it’s got problems.

First off, the average free and open source code is shit. AI generated code is labyrinthine, and tends to have bugs that are nigh-impossible for a programmer to fix, let alone a vibe coder. That’s a minor problem compared to the gaping security hole it creates. You see, most code needs third party code to run. But AI doesn’t actually know what dependencies are, let alone what dependencies are real. So it guesses a plausible sounding dependency. Sometimes, they’re real. But sometimes, they’re “hallucinated”, bullshitted. This can include dependencies that sound similar to real ones, or be a real dependency for other code languages. Or it can be totally made up

So what happens when a vibe coder with no experience try to run code with non-existent dependencies? Sometimes the dependency isn’t needed and nothing bad happens. Sometimes, the code fails because it’s missing something, but it could fail for a million other reasons too, and now the vibe coder has to start from scratch. But sometimes, a criminal realized that there are vibe coders who run code they don’t understand. Sometimes, that non-existent dependency exists as malware. And that means that every corporation that allows vibe coding is an accident waiting to happen.

They call that slopsquatting. Because AI code is slop. Like everything AI makes. And most AI is feeding its slop machine AI generated slop. This will only get worse. AI will get worse. The bubble will pop. And I am excited.

So we hired the IFTTT ppl and they said we don’t need flutter, and they somehow ordered ice cream using Siri shortcuts but they said they just asked the Apple GPT ppl to make shortcuts understandable by Siri so when I asked her for ice cream, it got me one… so now we are gonna ask ppl if they want their buy buttons and safari bookmarks on our shortcuts app for Siri to remember and that way we don’t have to run a bunch of neural engine code all the time.

on character ai

being on tiktok rn is being crushingly disappointed by the sheer volume of locals who have discovered character ai and are using it to generate x reader fics. idk just as a person who has been around fandom spaces there are just soooo many people with a passion for writing x reader and while it’s not my cup of tea they are so, so talented and can do so much better than ai. I see people thrilled and excited to get the ai to show a steamy kiss when there are infinite authors who will write you getting railed by your fav six ways to Sunday if you just ASK. like I could search any fandom and find a million talented writers with requests open. ITS MOST USUALLY FREE TOO !!!

or like, if it’s the interaction aspect that’s appealing, there are so many role-play spaces or ask-blogs and it just drives me nuts to see people stepping into this new form of fandom that is ai driven — such as with what I've been seeing about people plugging unfinished fics into chat gpt to get endings. do they realize that they are not only receiving a far lower, far more derivative quality of work, but also selling out their favorite authors in the process? 

The path we are headed down right now is so scary to me. as a person who has been in the trenches of the most horrendous brain rot and obsession over certain medias, I still wish I could shake these people by the shoulders and tell them that long after a tv show stops being important to you, it’s the people that you meet through shared interest in it that will remain. its a far more sustainable and meaningful kind of connection and fandom is a hub for it. I have met so many of the best friends I've ever had through being obsessed with a book and NEEDING to write with other people about it. contrast that with seeking your writing fixation through character ai. That is a closed circuit. you and the computer, nothing else. im begging ppl to postpone instant gratification for one second and remember whats actually important about fandom. 

stop feeding ais and instead commission artists, reblog their headcanons, comment on fics, submit to ask blogs, join rp servers, request from writers — ANYTHING anything. it will be so much more fulfilling and benefits the creative ecosystem so much more.

#very very interesting topic#you are talking about FHS (file hierarchy system) but I instead would like to know your thoughts on filesystems as in FS#you said you're “functionality over ideology”#are you sticking with plain good old ext4 or do you use some CoW fs like zfs or btrfs?

I'm just a boring ext4+SWAP+MBR* pleb. It was the easiest option when installing and fit my needs (1. is a filesystem, 2. works); and I haven't needed to switch disks (or add a second disk) yet so there's not been a good opportunity to experiment.

Btrfs seems neat, it'll probably be the first I try. I don't really care about encryption but having a better backup system than "plug a spinning disk into my hotswap bay every couple months and dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdc" would be nice.

*my mobo (Intel DX58SO2) claims to support UEFI but I think there's something wrong with its implementation. Every UEFI booter I've tried hasn't worked right and the UEFI shell totally fails to load. No GPT for me!

Thoughts on Linux (the OS)

Misconception!

I don't want to be obnoxiously pedantic, but Linux is not an OS. It is a kernel, which is just part of an OS. (Like how Windows contains a lot more than just KERNEL32.DLL). A very, very important piece, which directly shapes the ways that all the other programs will talk to each other. Think of it like a LEGO baseplate.

Everything else is built on top of the kernel. But, a baseplate does not a city make. We need buildings! A full operating system is a combination of a kernel and kernel-level (get to talk to hardware directly) utilities for talking to hardware (drivers), and userspace (get to talk to hardware ONLY through the kernel) utilities ranging in abstraction level from stuff like window management and sound servers and system bootstrapping to app launchers and file explorers and office suites. Every "Linux OS" is a combination of that LEGO baseplate with some permutation of low and high-level userspace utilities.

Now, a lot of Linux-based OSes do end up feeling (and being) very similar to each other. Sometimes because they're directly copying each other's homework (AKA forking, it's okay in the open source world as long as you follow the terms of the licenses!) but more generally it's because there just aren't very many options for a lot of those utilities.

Want your OS to be more than just a text prompt? Your pick is between X.org (old and busted but...well, not reliable, but a very well-known devil) and Wayland (new hotness, trying its damn hardest to subsume X and not completely succeeding). Want a graphics toolkit? GTK or Qt. Want to be able to start the OS? systemd or runit. (Or maybe SysVinit if you're a real caveman true believer.) Want sound? ALSA is a given, but on top of that your options are PulseAudio, PipeWire, and JACK. Want an office suite? Libreoffice is really the only name in the game at present. Want terminal utilities? Well, they're all gonna have to conform to the POSIX spec in some capacity. GNU coreutils, busybox, toybox, all more or less the same programs from a user perspective.

Only a few ever get away from the homogeneity, like Android. But I know that you're not asking about Android. When people say "Linux OS" they're talking about the homogeneity. The OSes that use terminals. The ones that range in looks from MacOS knockoff to Windows knockoff to 'impractical spaceship console'. What do I think about them?

I like them! I have my strongly-felt political and personal opinions about which building blocks are better than others (generally I fall into the 'functionality over ideology' camp; Nvidia proprietary over Nouveau, X11 over Wayland, Systemd over runit, etc.) but I like the experience most Linux OSes will give me.

I like my system to be a little bit of a hobby, so when I finally ditched Windows for the last time I picked Arch Linux. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to treat their OS as a hobby, though. There are better and easier options for 'normal users'.

I like the terminal very much. I understand it's intimidating for new users, but it really is an incredible tool for doing stuff once you're in the mindset. GUIs are great when you're inexperienced, but sometimes you just wanna tell the computer what you want with your words, right? So many Linux programs will let you talk to them in the terminal, or are terminal-only. It's very flexible.

I also really, really love the near-universal concept of a 'package manager' -- a program which automatically installs other programs for you. Coming from Windows it can feel kinda restrictive that you have to go through this singular port of entry to install anything, instead of just looking up the program and running an .msi file, but I promise that if you get used to it it's very hard to go back. Want to install discord? yay -S discord. Want to install firefox? yay -S firefox. Minecraft? yay -S minecraft-launcher. etc. etc. No more fucking around in the Add/Remove Programs menu, it's all in one place! Only very rarely will you want to install something that isn't in the package manager's repositories, and when you do you're probably already doing something that requires technical know-how.

Not a big fan of the filesystem structure. It's got a lot of history. 1970s mainframe computer operation procedure history. Not relevant to desktop users, or even modern mainframe users. The folks over at freedesktop.org have tried their best to get at least the user's home directory cleaned up but...well, there's a lot of historical inertia at play. It's not a popular movement right now but I've been very interested in watching some people try to crack that nut.

Aaaaaand I think those are all the opinions I can share without losing everyone in the weeds. Hope it was worth reading!

[epistemic status: talking about interaction of two things I don’t fully understand]

Claim 1 (4:1 confidence): you could design a reasonably-sized boolean circuit that implemented GPT-3. It would probably be too big to feasibly manufacture, but it wouldn’t be the size of the moon, so you could at least simulate it (probably painfully slowly).

Claim 2 (1:1 confidence): there exist fancy “homomorphic” crypto protocols (like this one, perhaps?) that facilitate the evaluation of arbitrary boolean circuits on arbitrary inputs, with different inputs encrypted by different people, none of whom trust each other, and with the result decrypted such that no participant can learn anything about any other participant‘s secrets, except what they can infer from their own secret and the result. (Classic example: Alice and Bob might want to date, so they do this procedure with a simple AND gate. If the result comes out 1, then each know that the other also put in 1; else, the person who put in 0 doesn’t know what the other’s input was.)

Claim 3 (2:1 confidence): (1) and (2), together, entail that multiple people could plug their secrets into an encrypted GPT-3 computation and perform arbitrary natural-language queries on those secrets.

For example: Alice and Bob each have some set of possibly-unspeakably-embarrassing kinks, and they want to determine which kinks they have in common, without revealing any non-shared ones. They can’t just do the “dating” example above on a per-kink basis, because kink-space is far too large and ill-defined. So, instead, they construct a boolean circuit that corresponds to running GPT-3 on the prompt “Alice is into ____ and Bob is into ____; they are both into...”, with the blanks filled in by their respective kink-lists. Then they coax a bunch of tokens of output out of GPT-3, decrypt those tokens, and thereby learn what they’re both into.

And, like-- the kink thing is just a dumb example off the top of my head, but more generally, this lets you basically instantiate an intelligent mind that you and your friends and your enemies can all safely entrust with all your respective most terrible secrets, and ask natural-language questions about how to better cooperate in light of that. Alice and Bob could prompt GPT-3 with “Alice’s darkest secrets are ____ and Bob’s darkest secrets are ___; it would be mutually beneficial if the following were common knowledge: ...”. Isn’t that crazy?

(...okay, you definitely wouldn’t do it with GPT-3, but it might be feasible with GPT-6. But even then the participants might need to worry about something roughly alignment-shaped.)

I don’t have concrete backstories for everyone yet because Difficult (and I barely rlly have that for O5ver) but while I am using motifs etc from Mechs lore I am not sure how much is staying from either source I’m using

Founder - he gets to keep his name. Arron Gears is campy enough for Mechanisming  - in no less than two albums is someone physically plugged into some machinery to power it and considering how Founder Is. Uh  - Local Robot Cultist Decides It’s His Job Before Himself And God To Literally Hold Up A Whole Fucking Planet And Unfortunately Realizes He Cannot Do This Alone  - originally intended, as you can tell, the Mechs enterprise to be much more. Well. Hands on. Then he and his half assembled crew failed enough times to get everyone to outvote him on the whole “NO WE CONTINUE” thing, and decide to start a band to tell cautionary tales instead. He’s still trying though he has less. Option to ig  - was a major proponent behind the idea of mechanization and helped develop the final process with some of his experience from religious augmentations  - may or may not have an equivalent to Out  - Some degree of Nastya figure...  - I have been digging into Carmillore and I might throw in aspects of that as well 

Nazarene  - Sophia Jesu Light is also campy enough - there’s like no Raphaellore but she has those vibes  - she definitely does have the whole Actual Jesus? vibes, down to using her immortality as a way to know she’d survive prototype mechanization  - may be “more alive” with the mechanization aspects? I’m not sure  - between this and various other things I think I need to think about her relationship to Founder more  - Information fuckery as well 

Philosopher  - I’m working things out... Like still not super standard, I think the first standard mechanization was probably Physician, because Joey got mechanized not to become immortal but because Joey had just BECOME immortal by getting timefucked  - the detachment from the timestream happened in timeline here, and he’s also why the timefuckery is a plot point  - he couldn’t. Deal with it with his standard brainspace though, like he could not conceive properly  - so they mechanized his memory keeping lobe and he’s okay now :]  - Joseph Tamlin is also a campy enough name to keep

An Example:

GPT hates the Oxford comma. It also loves adverbs, em dashes, emojis, and forgetting periods at the end of paragraphs. It will write one part in British English and another in American English. It cannot figure out the sensical order to put information in for the best flow. It likes fragments and using colons incorrectly. It won’t swear. It also cannot actually comprehend what is plugged into it, so it’ll replace text with technically incorrect synonyms given the context. It also will condense text to the point of becoming technically incorrect or misleading or different in meaning. Instead of “we made real progress today,” the LLM proposes “we created honest developments today.”

There’s a post on here that’s like “the use of em dashes isn’t a sign of AI,” and I’ve been avoiding reblogging it because the overuse of the em dash is absolutely a feature of AI-created text.

Shit like Chat GPT is a language learning model. It is trained on the sum total of all text in the internet. Put good in? Get good out. However, most of us are not good at writing and most of what’s on the internet is full of gramatical errors.

Now, GPT is trained to be grammatically and spelling correct, but not necessarily accurate or “most correct,” just correct. To the point that it has tells, like using em dashes when it would be grammatically more appropriate to use commas or start a new sentence. AI-created text uses em dashes every paragraph. Hell, it uses them every-other sentence. Suddenly, you’re reading something without any commas and a hell of a lot of run-on sentences.

AI text is also more, eh… liberal, in its use of fragments and run-ons. It is almost like the LLM is attempting to not use the word “and” except for at the beginning of sentences. It also seems to hate transitionary words and phrases, and is very bad at organizing a text for flow. As the LLM is not actually “intelligent,” it will “write” subjects or sentences technically out of place.

It has its tells. It does. Enough that when I read something, I know when it was generated by AI. It has its own way of talking and tone that is unique to the program.
