Honestly hate the web of social conventions and competition and capitalistic career-worship that prevents me from answering the question “so, why do you want this job?” by simply texting the interviewer this image:

#genuinely pisses me off so much#especially when i'm applying for jobs in like supermarkets#and coffee shops and such#like come ON#it's a relationship as old as humanity#you have excess resources! (aka money)#and require labour#i have excess time and the capacity to perform labour but require resources!#why not make a trade?#it should be so fucking simple#but instead i have to sit there and try and earnestly give the impression that it's always been my life's dream to barist#jobs#job interviews#jobseekers#job hunt

There are soooooo many instances in The Pitt where a character says an objectively completely normal/socially acceptable/logical next step in the conversation thing to say and then everyone looks at them like they're insane.
#Whitaker answering 'do you play football' with 'yeah i used to!' and donahue is like 👁️ 👄 👁️ WRONG!#Mel checking on an active labour patient and saying 'i see hair' they did her so dirty that was a NORMAL thing to say to convey crowning#drug seeking patient talking about his family and mohan saying she's an only child then popcorning to whitaker who says what siblings he ha#and they again look at him like MORONN WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT LOL AWKWARD#but IT'S OBJECTIVELY THE NORMAL CONTINUATION OF THE CONVERSATION#my conclusion here is that everyone is so neurotic in the pitt that the ones who understand the fundamentals of how normal conversations go#are the ones thrown under the bus#robby asking whitaker if it's a good sandwich and he's like yeah actually NOPE sarcasm#something you see online a lot too depicts this well - you can't depict sarcasm accurately when NO ONE KNOWS YOUR INITIAL VIBE#sarcasm as a first impression on someone tends to require a bit of 'are they being serious or are they a bit dry/awkward?'#it's consistently funny in the show but omg some justice for these characters!#i get that the clown is having a horrible day but his social vibe was fucking awful lmao#the pitt#the pitt hbo#the pitt max

people like to get their panties in a twist over the phrase "unskilled labour" because it implies stupidity and low wages and because it literally says unskilled, but then they also say that there's no such thing as 'unskilled labour' because you every job takes some degree of effort and thought.
which, sure, true, but when you look at what unskilled labour denotes in practice (besides fuck you, get paid less) you'll see that it actually denotes pre-job skill. Being a waiter is unskilled labour because anyone can just jump in and learn, but being an electrician takes years of both study and apprenticeship.
I think when you pretend there isn't a difference here, you just sound like a middle class kid cranky about being a cashier, who has no idea the level of skill that goes into a trade.
#obviously not everyone is doing this exactly plenty of people have respect for trades etc#and obviously unskilled labour is used as a way to excuse poor wages and applied inappropriately#but it is just goofy to flatten the skill requirements between a trade and hospitality work#some jobs do indeed require more training and skills for their 'floor'

Just continuous improvement in the workplace thing <3
Sometimes you just want someone to listen to an idea of yours and give you a straight answer; not a roadmap, some excuses, and a vague promise to look into it <3
#oh hey i have this idea#it would improve our productivity and use existing infastructure#it would take like half a day to implement#yeah but that sounds like a would be nice feature as opposed to a necessary one ya feel#have you considered that committing to continuous improvement requires starting improvements#work#labour#workplaces#rage bait

i think the global collapse of esports is a net positive for labour because the business model was so exploitative that it couldn't survive a single day, let alone be profitable, without people willingly signing on to work in deplorable conditions which weren't a secret to anyone. kids being paid in mousepads and team merch and shit. fans tweeting their support for teams for a single season and getting picked up (read: preyed upon) to do social media management in three languages. high visibility casters getting sacked via text message to say nothing of how they treated women and the very young and mostly Asian player talent.
i think you might be able to argue that it's possible for some industries to be reformed, but personally i'm happy to see this one die when most of the workers would've been better off pouring coffee and literal teenagers were investing 5-10 years of their lives into this house of cards. hopefully when it comes back people just refuse to get involved unless there's something more attractive offered than clout and poverty wages - if you're paid at all lol. and that's not to say it's the fault of the very passionate labour force for getting involved, the blame is still primarily on franchise owners and publishers. but we can and should encourage people not to knowingly or not, engage with scams when they come with a big red label that says "scam" on them - without shaming them. fame was such a big part of the draw. love of games the communities around them was another, and we know how that traps people in game production and esports was a severe downgrade from that.
... however the lengths to which the very people who were exploited by this industry are going to eulogize the good stuff right now (and don't get me wrong, there was lots of good stuff) makes me nervous that when it does come back we won't remember how overwhelmingly terrible it was. every kind of terrible you can imagine.
#i am required to post about this and i have no social media left so#rest in pieces overwatch league#re: esports#labour

Boggles my mind that people are looking to get rid of other people that do the job they want done. Like cashiers are being replaced with self-checkout stations and artists and writers are being replaced with computer-generated images and writing but if I ever had a business my whole mantra would be that if the job can be done by a person and I can afford to pay that person then that’s what I’m gonna do. Forget GenAI like the second my hypothetical business can afford to hire graphic designers I’m ditching Canva and never looking back.
How did we ever get here
#and it’s always certain professions that get thrown ubder the bus#always the ones deemed invaluable#or unskilled labour#or what have you#anyone counting change at the cash register#or doing any creative work#will instantly tell you that every job has a specific skillset#that’s required to do it properly#and even if it WAS unskilled#people deserve to be paid for the work they do#and they deserve to be paid enough to cover rent and eat 3 square meals a day#capitalism#late stage capitalism#capitalism rant#GenAI#generative ai

Me: my office job is awful and I hate it—truly the worst
Average Tumblrite: actually you’re privileged and entitled
#like my job didn’t actually require a college degree#and only bosses worked from home like after a few months when the company took a break at the beginning of COVID#and we were asked to come back#So a job can be bad in a different way than other jobs like manual labour are bad

also literally stated in the excerpt:
"A sociologist studying gender in veterinary schools, Dr. Anne Lincoln says that in an attempt to describe this drastic drop in male enrollment, many keep pointing to financial reasons like the debt-to-income ratio or the high cost of schooling. But Lincoln’s research found that “men and women are equally affected by tuition and salaries.”
Why aren't we talking about the real reason male college enrollment is dropping? (Celeste Davis, Oct 6 2024)
"White flight is a term that describes how white people move out of neighborhoods when more people of color move in.
White flight is especially common when minority populations become the majority. That neighborhood then declines in value.
Male flight describes a similar phenomenon when large numbers of females enter a profession, group, hobby or industry—the men leave. That industry is then devalued.
Take veterinary school for example:
In 1969 almost all veterinary students were male at 89%.
By 1987, male enrollment was equal to female at 50%.
By 2009, male enrollment in veterinary schools had plummeted to 22.4%
A sociologist studying gender in veterinary schools, Dr. Anne Lincoln says that in an attempt to describe this drastic drop in male enrollment, many keep pointing to financial reasons like the debt-to-income ratio or the high cost of schooling.
But Lincoln’s research found that “men and women are equally affected by tuition and salaries.”
Her research shows that the reason fewer men are enrolling in veterinary school boils down to one factor: the number of women in the classroom.
For every 1% increase in the proportion of women in the student body, 1.7 fewer men applied.
One more woman applying was a greater deterrent than $1000 in extra tuition! (…)
Since males had dominated these professions for centuries, you would think they would leave slowly, hesitantly or maybe linger at 40%, 35%, 30%, but that’s not what happens.
Once the tipping point reaches majority female- the men flee. And boy do they flee!
It’s a slippery slope. When the number of women hits 60% the men who are there make a swift exit and other men stop joining.
Morty Schapiro, economist and former president of Northwestern University has noticed this trend when studying college enrollment numbers across universities:
“There’s a cliff you fall off once you become 60/40 female/male. It then becomes exponentially more difficult to recruit men.”
Now we’ve reached that 60% point of no return for colleges.
As we’ve seen with teachers, nurses and interior design, once an institution is majority female, the public perception of its value plummets.
Scanning through Reddit and Quora threads, many men seem to be in agreement - college is stupid and unnecessary.
A waste of time and money. You’re much better off going into the trades, a tech boot camp or becoming an entrepreneur. No need for college. (…)
When mostly men went to college? Prestigious. Aspirational. Important.
Now that mostly women go to college? Unnecessary. De-valued. A bad choice. (…)
School is now feminine. College is feminine. And rule #1 if you want to safely navigate this world as a man? Avoid the feminine.
But we don’t seem to want to talk about that."
#You honestly didn't even need to read the article honestly just the headline and infer key priors#Like U know women are people and thus pay tuition as well#Also this thesis of under valuation carries over to non university qualified work#All the highest paying trades are extremely male dominated and very shite to get into as a woman#The more woman are in a trade the less it typically pays. I've noticed this as I've looked at and worked in different trades. Trades that#Are female dominated like operating industrial sewing machines pay literally minimum wage despite the years of machine experience + theory#The male equivalent of this level of experience like say cabinet making starts like 3-5$ more than minimum wage typically. Mixed trades#Like landscape gardening or painting typically are 1-4$ or so more than minimum wage n caps out at about 10$ if you make it up to fore#Most regulated male dominated trades fetch twice the minimum wage before mid career. All the trades that make $100000 are severely male n#tons of them Require you to live in a remote almost all male man camps where SA and DV are rife against female colleagues and locals alike#(man camps are often seen as a driver of mmiw in local areas) No wonder trades look like a better deal to men than university as different#sectors become feminized in the job market while women see tons of barriers and shite pay. Obviously the dollar and amounts and#stuff here are regional but I really cannot help but notice how the more female a trade is the lower it pays#So tired of white men with citizenships being imagined as the default prole.#Women are workers. People who are the undervalued as “surplus labour” are labour!
