Elijah could only smile from where he sat before her. He hadn't remembered his real birthday too well, and it didn't matter much anyway since his human life was well in the past. His smile widened as he teased her, a gentle brush of his fangs to her skin.

"It's about vampires." Bella didn't notice the raised eyebrows around the table.

"Why are you reading about vampires?", Edward demanded, forcing a nonchalant tone.

"It's for english. This actually sounds a bit like you", Bella explained and leaned back on her chair, crossing her arms over her chest. Emmet choked on his drink.

Bella, focused on how Edward's mouth formed into a thin line and his eyebrows furrowed in concentration, didn't see that Jasper and Alice shared an amused look while Rosalie elbowed Emmet to make him hide the smirk forming on his face.

"It says here", Bella started as she gestured to the book, "that vampires are fast and strong, with pale, cold skin." Bella forced a grave expression to her face and continued, "They don't eat or drink, don't go out in the sunlight. Immortal." Bella paused. "Just like you." Bella finished with an amused smile.

"Well you certainly got him there", Emmet said, laughing. Edward gave him a flat look.

"How old are you, anyway?" Bella asked.

"Seventeen."

"How long have you been seventeen?"

"A while", Edward said, rolling his eyes.

she knew that this moment would come again, bella had simply thought that she mentally prepared herself for leaving. in hindsight, there was no way to do that. not with him. what a role reversal, her with her bags ready to hop on a flight to visit her mom and stepfather. the one leaving. no longer the one being left. it had been NICE -- sweet, seeing him. but more than that, it showed bella just how much she was missing. surely, he was feeling the same. he HAD to. she inhaled, he exhaled (well, for metaphor's sake). she took a step, his feet moved in time with her own. they never missed a step.

his cold lips were pressed against what she was sure was the clammy skin of her forehead, her eyes pressed shut so tight that she could see small, flickering lights behind her lids. she could stay like this forever. she would if he would let her.

"what if i wanted you to stay?" came her blurt as he pulled away, heart threatening to burst out of its chest and start sprinting down the nearest road. "or -- i mean... what if i didn't want to leave?" he was going to spurn her. he was going to give her that soft, 'oh you' laugh and that little smile and tell her that it was smarter for her to go, to try and forget him or whatever bullshit he thought she was capable of doing.

"i -- i don't think i can do it again, edward. i don't WANT to. i don't... i don't want you to just be a memory anymore."

Am I the only one who likes the idea of being devoured? Becoming one in a very cruel, morally exhausting and inhumane way.
