Sanji And Reader Being Smitten With Each Other Would Include...
Tumblr media
Request: Headcanons of sanji with a crush or s/o who is absolutely smitten? Like always glancing or looking at him. Probably got punched across a room in battle after admiring sanji. Literally always looks at him with heart eyes.
My love this is so sweet but honestly I feel like Sanji is exactly the same so I hope you don't mind Sanji being just as smitten with reader :)
Warning: slightly NSFW, mentions of smoking and mentions of blood/ injury!
(I do not own One Piece or its characters, all rights go to creators. Gif credit goes to @suuho.)

I mean look at Mr. Heart Eyes right here so let's just say that you're smitten? You're with the perfect man then because oh my goooossshh have you driven ZORO crazy with how infatuated the two of you are with each other. This poor swordsman has to spend 90% of his time barrel rolling you out of the way and diving in front of Sanji because you dopey dumbasses (affectionate in my case and derogatory in Zoro's) will just not. stop. gaping. at. each. other.
It all started when you agreed to escape the Germa Kingdom with your young princely friend; for many a year, since that fateful day he had literally walked face first into you while you were pretend playing pirates with some of your school chums in the marketplace, Sanji had been inseparable from you. Whether it was him sneaking out to find some solace in your welcoming home, or you trudging over the imposing walls of the palace so you could sneak down into the dungeons and hold a weeping Sanji's hand through the bar grates, you had been the one thing in his life since his mother's passing that had kept him sane.
And now here you were: worried eyes dampened by the torrential rain, but still peering over his face on that desolate rock the three of you ended up shipwrecked on. The whole eighty five days the two of you were stuck on that lonely side, with nothing but the unending stretch of unsultry gloam to keep you company, Sanji believed you were an angel sent to keep him safe. It was the way you shoved the crummy tins you had managed to shovel into your pockets while the ship was going down into Sanji's arms, shaking your head and pressing them further into his stomach as he began to protest. It was the lack of care you had for yourself, so intent you were with making sure he was doing as well as he possibly could: scooping murky water out of the crevices with your hands, just so you could run back and let it trickle down your fingertips and against his chapping lips. How some nights you hadn't slept a wink, too busy chasing away the growing whirlwind of seagulls that circled over your heads, diving down to try and peck at Sanji's burning legs. Making sure that he was tucked tightly under the overhanging edge of a crag, relinquishing the only bit of cover on this small island so Sanji could at least be a little sheltered from the constant downpour. Not only that, but you had even tried to comfort him: offering him a tired smile as you let your fingers shakily run through his hair and tuck away the stubborn curls behind his right ear.
He had held you against him then, as tightly as he could. Wracking with shivers, he couldn't quite figure out if it was due to the freezing cold wind that blew in from the North and snapped at his fingers, or the growing guilt that left him sniffling against your shoulder. It was so hard to focus on anything, with the sleet biting at his face, the imposing waves eating away at the stones beneath your feet. So he did the only thing his dispirited mind could still home in on: the one thing he would regret never doing, if he really were to wane away on this forsaken rock. He let his eyes flutter close, and he used the crash of lightening to mask his thundering heart as he tilted his head up and bashfully pecked your cheek.
For a moment, you thought it was just another hot splash of rain, until you caught sight of Sanji pulling away quickly and ducking his head in embarrassment.
'I-I don't know if we'll ever- well, I'm giving that kiss to you as a loan. I fully expect to get it back.' He managed to rouse some kind of meagre conviction in his hollow voice as he turned to watch your reaction; when he realised you weren't horrified, but instead were wide-eyed with shock as your pointer finger glazed over the wet mark left on your skin, he found himself hopeful for the first time in his life.
God, the two of you were both so gone. It was haunting, in its own beautiful way, as you gripped onto his hand and squeezed.
Far too many times has Zeff nearly blown the kitchen down with the amount of boiling smoke pouring out of his ears due to you two. It wasn't your fault that you had been assigned to the kitchen for your shift: Zeff should have known better, considering the exact same thing had happened yesterday... and the day before... and the year before that and so on, until your hand resembled more bandage than actual skin. You couldn't help it. It was just far too enticing- something so enchanting drawing your attention away from julienning your carrots to instead focus on the way Sanji's taut muscles rippled underneath his shirt as he sautéed. It was as if he had spellbound your eyes so they followed his form around, gladly taking in and making note of the idiosyncrasies you recognised from childhood: the way he still bites his bottom lip when he's really concentrating on stirring, the revulsion on his face as he absentmindedly unscrews a spice jar and takes a sniff, finding it to be oregano.
When you gash across your ring finger and start pooling blood onto the chopping board, though, is when the spell finally breaks and the shouting starts. 'Forth time this week!', he wags his finger at you. 'Forth time this week I've had to bloody throw out good equipment!'
'Was that seriously a pun?', Sanji asks, following on your heel like a swarming shadow as you hobble over to the sink. Zeff bites his tongue as Sanji shakes his head at him: this was an argument they had had far too many times. He had almost, almost resigned himself to the fact that Sanji would, and has, dropped the plates he was carrying to the floor with a resounding crash to run over and care for you. Thankfully, this was the perfect opportunity for Sanji to wrap gauze around your finger, before using an 'old fisherman's tale for healing grievous wounds' by peppering kisses against your knuckle to make you laugh.
Once, you were caught admiring him across your shared work station; the dishes stacking up to be washed were long forgotten as you spent ten minutes absentmindedly running your soapy sponge over the same plate, too busy letting your eyelashes flutter down to watch Sanji's skilful hands work. If you had let your gaze settle for just one more second, you would have seen Sanji raise his eyes to observe your face, lingering far too long on the rising curve of your Cupid's Bow. He bit his bottom lip, trying to stop the peach from flushing along his ears as he imagined how it would feel to swipe his tongue against your lips. When your eyes finally lock, the two of you end up so flustered about being caught that you both immediately go running off in different directions for your fifteen minute breaks.
It's not until the late evening, when everything is finally stowed away and only the late party-goers of the ship are still milling about by the bar that Sanji reappears. His head pops around the door like a surprised meerkat, rapping his knuckles against the office door and smiling as you kicked out the velvet stool next to you, beckoning him in. You drop the pen you were fiddling with when he magics the dish he had been working on earlier from behind his back, the heavenly aroma of your favourite childhood dessert overwhelming your senses as he settles next to you.
'I remember that this was your favourite, and-. Well, a sweet treat for a sweet treat, don't you think darling?'
You hum as you take the first bite, dragging the spoon along your bottom lip and throwing your head back in delight. Little did you notice the effect the warm, low vibration and sight of your plush lip dragging spit against the metal had on Sanji. He squirmed in his chair, swallowing thickly as he did his best to straighten his spine and look presentable: not like someone who was finding it harder and harder to hide the tingling feeling burning in his groin at the sight of you. God, just one noise and he was becoming undone.
He nearly cries out when you lean forward, so close he could nuzzle the tip of his nose against yours. God, does he want to. Instead he becomes slack jawed, eyes glazing over with pure want as you use your thumb and pointer finger to grip onto his chin. You tug down, opening his mouth and replacing the space with a fresh spoonful of his sweet dessert. He forgets how to breathe as he watches you glide the spoon out past his locked lips. It's only when you swipe away a little bit of cream left behind on his bottom lip line with your tongue, that he finally jolts. You just giggle, bringing the spoon back to your own mouth and sucking off the remnants of chocolate as Sanji does his best to stop his breath shuddering with soft squeaks.
His heart is about to spill out onto the floor: the trajectory of his life wrapped so firmly around the sweet twilight embrace of your tide that he would find it a pleasure to drown. You were his best friend. The love of his life. And he understands in that moment, with a realisation he could never unlearn, that he would go through every moment that led, every hardship, every bit of pain to get here again. He would do it all, if it meant he ended here with you.
But he only sighs and smiles fondly as you reach up to tuck that damn stubborn curl of hair back behind his ear again.
As soon as he made it back to his room, he slammed the door and fell back against it. With a hand thrown over his face, he groaned inwardly at how oblivious he had been. How much time he had wasted being afraid. But it was okay. He understood now. It had always been you. This. He was made more of you than he was of himself.
The next night, just after your shift, you find him leaning casually against the back door of the Baratie: his legs crossed out in front of him, watching the waves lap up serenely against the docks. His back rests against the shimmer of the bottle-green fish scales, making him seem almost other-worldly as the sun dips over his body. It fades from a warm yellow against his fringe, settling onto a melted honey running over his twirling cigarette, bowing with a crushed violet against his tapping heel.
You two have spent the last thirteen years endlessly circling each other's orbits without the eventual collide, that it didn't take long for you to find him. Tucking yourself against his shoulder, Sanji offers you a smile full of solace: an unspoken acknowledgement that he had been waiting out here for your arrival.
That despite all the hours and hours he had droned on about finding the All Blue, he wanted to be here with you - hell, he wanted to be anywhere with you. Even though he couldn’t find the right words to say it, still so unused to the daunting vehemence of requited love, it showed in the lift of his rose-tinted cheeks. In the flutters of the lines on his forehead. Sanji knew one thing in his life was certain, no matter how his future panned out: he loved you with every fibre of his being.
He grabs at your fingers, gently guiding them up to his lips. Pursing them, he places your fingertips around the mouthpiece and stares over the butt as he takes a final inhale, firm perch stopping you from getting away. As the stream of smoke floods out from the corner of his mouth, he allows you to pluck the cigarette away and toss it into the ocean.
'Y/n, I-', he starts breathlessly, turning his torso so he's giving you his undivided attention. He looks terrified - even more so when you quickly interrupt him by talking over his quivering confession.
'I have something to give back to you.' Your tone is so serious, Sanji's head bucks back in confusion.
'...Well, love. If you stole my apron again, don't sweat it.' He shoves his hands into his pockets, finding his courage draining away as you stare indiscernibly straight at him. 'Zeff has enough in the spare cupboard that we could dress up every Marine in a new uniform-'
'No, I mean- well', you shake your head and look up at the sky. 'I've been meaning to give it back for a long time now, but I guess delivery is pretty slow out in the middle of bloody nowhere', you laugh breathlessly, appreciating the way Sanji's worried eyebrow creases settle at the joke. You swear, golden treasures buried at the bottom of the ocean couldn't gleam as ferociously as Sanji's eyes do as he finally catches onto your meaning, his mouth dropping open.
His breath hitches in his throat, and his chin drops down to his neck in shock as you lean to your right and finally press your pliant lips against his own. Your fingers are quick to spread over his cheek, twirling through his loose curl once again as he falls against you; he almost crushes you with his full weight, but is quick to curve his spine and bow over you, little whimpers following his open mouth.
For a moment, as a thin trail of spit joins your brushing lips, Sanji has no idea how to react. Well, that is until he registers shock ripples delightfully lashing up his spine as you shove him back against the wall, his mouth falling open again in allowance for your tongue to lash in and fill the empty space: to suffocate his whines.
The look on the rest of the cooks' faces as the two of you come stumbling back in is priceless. The two of you really thought you had gotten away with it: if it weren't for the wall being shaken hard enough to rouse a Kraken from its slumber, and the slurred string of French curses and praises stuttering out of Sanji's lips and through the open door, you almost might have.
It's so worth it. Sanji just coughs into his clenched fist, fixing his lopsided tie and doing his best to use the flat edge of his thumb to try and wipe away some of the ruddiness from his swelling bottom lip. But when he slides his fingers in-between yours, a shy smile masked by a playful wink thrown back at you, do you know the two of you won't be able to keep your eyes (or your hands) off each other for the rest of the dining service.
When two of your 'charming' customers have a disagreement over their seating arrangements, you're too busy admiring how Sanji's thighs strain against his pressed trousers to see the trouble coming your way. It's only when one of them comes hurtling towards you and knocks you and your drinks tray ass over kettle that you become enraged. Before Sanji can even reach you to apologise, you've launched the customer off of you with a swift kick, managing to jab Sanji in the abdomen in the process. Doubling over, he falls on his face on top of you. I've got to be honest, neither of you are exactly complaining about your sudden arrangement. Once you've finished giggling and checking each other over, you realise that an inch lower, and short pant of Sanji's heaving breath against your breast and your lips would be brushing together.
The two of you would have turned into a tangled mess of heavy making out right there and then if Zeff hadn't come swinging out of the kitchen to see what all the ruckus was about.
Istg this poor man does his best to give the two of you jobs at opposite ends of the Baratie, only to nearly tug his braided beard out when a customer complains that their service is slow because, *surprise surprise*, the two of you are slacking off together. Either you're making heart eyes at him during as you wait in the main dining area, using any opportunity to grip onto the meat of his waist and slide past him with a poor excuse about 'needing to get clean menus' and making him shiver with a fresh rush of goose bumps, or he's finding you. Even when you were confined to working behind the bar, Sanji still manages to convince the other cooks that he so desperately needs the new delivery of brandy for his new profiterole recipe. Of course, he only does it so when he's on his knees lifting out the boxes, he can leave you a gasping, flustering mess. With clenched hands sending curls of shredded wood down on top of his hair, Sanji just presses his knees forward and pays no notice. He's too busy gliding his hands underneath your shirt, splaying them across your your back as he shoves his nose into your stomach. Although he's careful to stay hidden from the customers, he adores the sound of your clenched whines too much to stop himself. He rolls up the hem, ravishing you with a wet trail of kisses over the band of your trousers; his tongue runs welts over your skin as his teeth suck underneath your bellybutton, his left hand snaking down to rest on your leg so he can grip his thumb against the inner seam of your thigh.
It's only when the pad of his pointer finger presses a little too close to your clothed groin and you spill a drink over a customer that you both stop.
Once the two of you join Luffy's crew, you and Zoro seem to be the perfect team to drive Zoro up the wall. He likes you just fine, but you and waiter together being all lovey dovey makes him want to jump head first overboard.
What makes it even better is the fact that during the attack on Coco Village, you were too busy being proud of Sanji on his spectacular form and fighting technique that you and Zeff had spent years teaching him, that you don't notice one of the Fish-Men grabbing your collar. Before you can even gasp, you've been punched straight across the water and have knocked Zoro and three of the guys he was fighting down like a speeding bowling ball.
From then on, Zoro sleeps in the Crow's Perch and nowhere else. If he's not being knocked down, he's being left wincing as he trains with bruises gained from your elbow jabbed into his back. It's not your fault if you sneak in to cuddle in Sanji's hammock every night, and Zoro's face just happens to be inches away from yours. Sanji still has nightmares of your shipwrecked days from time to time, and just the pressure of your hand against his arm is enough to rouse him from whatever oblivion he was beginning to sink into. A warmth immediately spills through him as the two of you spend most of the night talking, reminiscing, sharing secret smiles between lingering kisses that leave the two of you giddy.
You're always up before him, letting him sleep in for as long as you can with a final, lingering kiss to his tense forehead. You wait for him in the kitchen, a warm cup of tea cupped between your hands, and a second one waiting for him on the counter as he sleepily wanders in to start breakfast preparations. It's become a comforting routine: you placing your head on your hand and talking idly as you admire him, keeping him company.
He knows, though. He knows what you're really waiting for. He happily obliges once the eggs have begun to sizzle, coming to rest on the bench in front of you. He grabs onto your back, pulling you onto his lap until you were straddling his waist. With languid blinks, he leaves soft kisses against the edge of your mouth as you grind against him, delighting in the hoarse groan that bobs his Adam's Apple. You tug the hair at the nape of his neck before scraping your nails over the skin apologetically, but what other way were you going to get him to open his mouth for you? Besides, the jumbled rush of French words that leave his mouth in a pealing string as you slide your tongue over his pulse point is the most heavenly sound in the world.
You're only disturbed by the sound of Luffy's yawn. For a moment, he just scratches the back of his neck and looks between the two of you curiously.
'Y/n, how come only Sanji gets a good morning hug! Can I have one too!'
'No!'

a/n: apologies in advance im awful at writing angst but i loveee writing for roy <3 thank you for requesting!
Tumblr media
Roy Kent was a grouchy old man. Or at least that’s how he saw himself. He was moody and short temped, he fucking hated talking about his feelings and could barely walk up a fucking flight of stairs. And after that fucking Man City match and Jamie fucking Tartt he wasn’t even a footballer anymore.
You were a heaven-sent fucking angel. Or at least that’s how Roy Kent saw you. You were smart and caring and funny and so fucking gorgeous. Roy knew how lucky he got with you, he heard it all the time, from tabloids to in the locker room, even from his own sister. How did someone as sweet and sickenly fucking perfect as you end up with a jaded man like himself.
“C’mon love I wish you would talk to me” You took a seat by your boyfriend on his cold leather couch and handed him a cup of tea just how he liked it.
Roy only grumbled in response, to which you shot him a pointed glare back, ‘Don’t know what there is to talk about, I’m a old fucking man who fucked his knee and now can’t play fucking football anymore. That’s fucking that.”
“No that’s not ‘that fucking that’, Roy” you set your tea down to face Roy, “This is a big fucking deal and you are allowed to be sad or upset or just fucking angry.” your voice began to raise in frustration, “I just wish-I wish you would talk to me, or someone about this, Roy” your angered turn into desperation and your glossy eyes and furrowed brows made Roy’s heart feel like it was being squeezed dry.
“I don’t need to talk to someone” he spat.
“Roy-”
“God you always fucking do this. You treat people like little fucking broken toys and are just dying to fix them all, aren’t you? Well I'm not going to be one of your toys to mend back together, alright? So why don’t you just leave me the fuck alone”
The second Roy saw your trembling lips and the pool of tears that welled up in your eyes, he immediately regretted what he had said. He didn’t even know why he said it in the first place. It wasn’t even true, he knew that. But in the moment Roy would of said anything to avoid admitting how much the prospect of retiring from the only thing he felt good was killing him.
You stared at him blankly for a moment, stunned at what just happened. Roy, your Roy, your beautiful and loving Roy had just practically cussed you out. A simple “Fuck you, Roy” was all he heard as you grabbed your purse  and marched out of his house making sure to slam his door.
The sound of your car starting up in his driveway was enough to snap Roy out of his trance, and immediately a feeling of disgust washed over him. “Fuck.”
You woke up the next morning with puffy eyes and a throbbing headache. A sore reminder of last night's events. After storming out of Roy’s house you contemplated calling Keeley and Rebecca and asking for an emergency girl’s night. Instead you opted for weeping in your bed and getting sloshed in the comfort of your own home.
Since usually your Sundays consisted of lounging around the house with Roy, you didn’t have any plans for the day, you refused, however to sit around a mope in bed all day long so you sent a text to Rebecca and Keeley
“Brunch this morning? In desperate need of a mimosa x”
To which Keeley instantly replied
“Course babe! I can pick you up at your place around 11? xx”
“Perfect.”
Rebecca just liked your original message, which you knew was her way of agreeing. So you dragged yourself out of bed and put on your favourite sundress (which also happened to be Roy’s favourite as well, but you didn’t want to think too much about that) and started to head out the door, but before you could get your keys, the doorbell rang. Expecting it to be Keeley you scurried to the door, only to find your boyfriend looking like a sad puppy.
“Roy” was all you could manage to say.
“What the fuck you look beautiful” he breathed. This made you notice how truly disheveled Roy looked, which admittedly made you feel slightly better.
Your silence pushed Roy to keep talking “Fuck listen I don’t think I’m ready to talk about football or my knee or Jamie fucking Tartt but I want you to know that I’m so fucking sorry and I was the biggest prick last night”
“You’re right, you were” you scoffed “but I get it, you’re going through a lot of shit right now and you deserve to be a little prick sometimes. I just want you to know that you can talk to me about whatever you’re feeling, I mean come on I’ve seen you cry over the List Conquers All finale, I don’t think it can get much worse than that” you both laughed.
“I fucking love you, you know that” Roy reached forward grabbing your waist, shutting the door behind him and attacking your neck, making you sigh into his embrace.
“Mmm no I don’t think I do” you teased.
“Well I do. I love you.” he kissed your neck “you’re so sweet” next your jaw “and brilliant” then your temple “and so fucking sexy in that goddamn dress” he picked you up, wrapping your legs around his waist prompting a loud giggle from you.
“Fuck what time is it?” you pulled back from his dizzying kiss.
“Why, you’re gonna time me?” he smirked suggestively.
You swatted his chest, “no I'm going to brunch with Keeley and Rebecca”
“Fuck no, you can’t leave me here when you’re looking like that”
“Consider it your punishment for last night” you hopped down from Roy, already missing the feeling of his body against yours.
“I could think of a few much more fun ways to punish me”
“I’ll see you in a couple hours” you dismissed, trying to hide the blush behind your cheeks.
“I’ll be waiting” and he shot you one of his dizzying and incredibly rare Roy Kent smiles leaving you with one thought.
You just might have to cut this brunch a little shorter than expected.

Could we get a follow up on the scp 3008 thingy? It seems like a really cool concept :D
Alright, you guys got me! But I'm going for a slightly different format this time!

Ghost: What a weird fucking mission.
Soap: You're telling me, Lt. Price said it'd be cut and dry. In 'nd out.
Ghost: I wouldn't be so sure. They're sending us into a furniture store.
Soap: *laughs* a Swedish furniture store, LT.
Ghost: Whatever. And they sent Alejandro and Rodolfo. Something is going on, I just can't figure it out, yet.
Soap: Don't worry too hard, eh?
Ghost: You know me better than that, Johnny.

Soap: So, Alejandro, why did you and Rudy get sent here?
Alejandro: It was on favor to Price. He asked a Farah Karim, Roach, and Alex Keller here, too.
Soap: Ah, I saw them arrive with us. I thought the Americans had sent them.
Laswell: No, Sergeant MacTavish, Roach is British and Farah is from Urzikstan. She brought one of her scouts as backup.
Soap: You speak like you're close to Farah and Roach.
Laswell: Yes, I am very close to Farah. She saved my life and Price considers her close to a daughter. She and Gaz are best friends, as well.
Alejandro: Best friends like Ghost and Soap are best friends or best friends like you and Captain Price?
Soap: Away N Bile Yer Head, Alejandro.
Laswell: *laughs* Like John and I, Alejandro. I think Farah takes more interest in her scout than she does in men.
Soap: Like you?
Laswell: Exactly.
Alejandro: Soap, everyone can see that you and Ghost are much closer than best friends, so I don't understand the hostility.
Soap: We are as close of best friends as you and Rodolfo.
Alejandro: I don't know what you are implying by that.
Soap: Let me go repeat it to Rudy, I am sure he will pick it up.
Alejandro: Soap, I am warning-
Laswell: Boys.
Alejandro: My apologies, Kate.

Ghost: Captain Price, how copy?
Price: I copy, lieutenant. What is your approximate location?
Ghost: I just passed a pillar that said A4. Price, why the fuck are we here?
Price: *sigh* I'll be honest. I have no idea. I was just told we were to go in and get information and get out.
Ghost: By who? The Americans?
Price: They're mostly American. But, no. They're independent of any government.
Ghost: That does not ease my nerves, Captain.
Price: Come back to camp, Ghost. They told us it's better to not roam at night.
Ghost: It's a fucking furniture store.
Price: I think you've figured out by now it's more than a furniture store. Come back to camp. That's an order.
Ghost: I am coming back to camp, Captain. I expect an explanation.
Price: You have been given the exact same amount of information that I have, lieutenant.
Ghost: I think we both know that's a lie. Cut the bullshit, Price. What's going on?
Price: *sigh* Look, kid. I don't know what's going on. I know that doesn't reassure you, but I was sent in blind. I just know that this organization tracks and contains anomalous entities.
Ghost: Anomalous entities? What the fuck does that mean?
Price: Like a creature that freezes when you watch it, but moves and snaps your neck if you blink.
Ghost: Like the fuckin weeping angels on Doctor Who? You've gotta be fucking kidding me, Price, if you think I'm gonna believe any of that.
Price: I don't expect you to believe it.
Ghost: So what's so anomalous about this? It's a furniture store.
Price: They gave me no information beyond build a sturdy camp, and don't travel through the store when the lights go off.
Ghost: Why did you ask the other five to come?
Price: I thought they could help.
Ghost: What the fuck?
Price: Ghost, I don't see you. You should be back by now.
Ghost: Yeah, I kept going. What's the approximate dimensions of a regular Ikea Store?
Price: 27,871 square meters.
Ghost: Maybe I'm fucking crazy, but... I've been walking this entire time and it still looks like the store goes on for miles-
*click noise in background*
Price: Ghost? You need to get back to camp, now. The lights went off.
Ghost: Thank you, Captain, I can see that.
Price: Stay on transmission with me.
Ghost: I have no plans of getting off.
...
Price: Ghost, how copy?
Ghost: Still traveling, sir. We are at C3 and I just passed A3.
Price: You're getting closer. I would appreciate it if you would pick up the pace, lieutenant.
..
Ghost: What the fuck was that?!
Price: Ghost??
Ghost: One of the fucking employees just ran past me, screaming. It said "the Store is now closed, please exit the building". Bloody fucking hell
Price: You need to get back to camp. Now.
Ghost: I can see the lights from it, I'm almost there.

Laswell: Make it quick, boys. We're still early in the day, so we don't have to worry about the store closing any time soon.
Alejandro: I'm curious as to what kind of food could be in a furniture store.
Laswell: Meatballs.
Rodolfo: I'm sorry, did you just say meatballs?
Laswell: *laughs* Swedish meatballs, to be specific. My wife likes them. I think they're okay.
Alejandro: I've never been into an Ikea before. I thought that was a joke. Are you telling me they serve real food?
Laswell: Real food. It's fairly decent, too. I mean, it's obviously being sold from a furniture food so it isn't Michelin star level food but, it doesn't take like garbage.
Rodolfo: I'm not sure I trust food from a furniture store, but we need supplies.
Laswell: I'm not sure I would trust food from this specific store. Price and Ghost mentioned some weird things happened when Ghost was scouting.
Rodolfo: What things, Laswell?
Laswell: For one, the store is way bigger than it should be. Ghost travelled for a while and said he still would wager there was miles of store left to travel.
Alejandro: *laughs* That is impossible.
Laswell: I understand that. But, I trust Ghost. If he says the store is off, I trust the store is off. He almost mentioned the employees went... almost insane once the lights were off.
Alejandro: Fuck. What did Price get us into?
Rodolfo: I doubt Price would have brought us here if he knew it was horrible.
Alejandro: You trust people far more than I'm willing to.
Rodolfo: No. I don't trust most people, you know this. But I have faith in our friends.
Laswell: I can assure you, John did not bring you here with ill intentions.
Alejandro: I don't-
Rodolfo: Thank you, Laswell. I trust your assurances. Alejandro is just on edge. I think these last few days of confusion is getting to us all.
Laswell: I understand that, boys. I'm ready to just get out of here.
Alejandro: We all are.

Alex: Objective, find building materials.
Soap: I'm not sure I want to find out what those freaks do at night.
Gaz: I'm sure it's not too horrible, right? Whatever, Ghost figured out they can be killed, right?
Soap: Killed is a strong word, Gaz. More like... disappeared. He stabbed one of them in the neck and looked away for like a second and then it was just gone.
Alex: What the fuck.
Soap: Yeah. I'm telling you, this fucking place is weird. I heard Price and Laswell talking about the SCP foundation?
Gaz: What the actual fuck is the SCP foundation?
Soap: No fucking clue. Price told Laswell they were some organization that tracks anomalous entities and contains them.
Alex: Fuck. Fuck. I knew this mission was fucking weird. Goddamnit.
Gaz: I'm guessing you know what's going on?
Alex: Partially. Fuck. Look, the SCP foundation fucks with some weird shit. I... I am really hoping we did not get sent where I think we did.
Gaz: Where do you think we got sent?
Alex: Look, I don't know much about it. But... If we did, we are never getting out of here.

Doctor Who, but Chronologically: 42
It's 1967! Doctor Who has started on the telly, look.
But! We are jumping in with our... second? third? episode of the Flux, so Whittaker, Yaz and Dan are trying to deal with a universe that just got munched while dog people save Earth and Division are being shadowy paymasters. Last time we saw this, we saw the Doctor be delivered by weeping angels and then met her breathtakingly well-acted adopted Mam, and it turned out she runs Division and also was the one who actually triggered the Flux ready to move to another universe, while Yaz and Dan ran around in the 1910s with a fabulous professor called Eustacius Jericho.
This episode, we meet Jericho seemingly for the first time with an angel-possessed psychic called Claire, in a 1967 village. What an odd choice. Almost as though we are watching this in a very stupid order.
I FUCKING LOVE THIS EPISODE THOUGH
It's an angel episode!!! And a good one!!! The last one we saw was the Angels Take Manhattan, which is contemptible shite that makes zero sense. But this one! It's fucking fantastic. It's proper creepy horror from start to finish - in spite of being in the middle of a six-part story, there's little arc plot beyond a very small handful of scenes. Otherwise, after an unexplained start where a weeping angel is somehow in the TARDIS and hijacking it, we are treated to the tale of a village called St Hilary in Cowbridge Medderton in Devon the night its inhabitants all mysteriously vanish without trace, leaving it to be taken over by the military as a locked camp in the future. One woman in the village knows it's coming, and is desperately trying to warn people, but no one is listening; but, it emerges that this also happened to the village in 1901.
Why? Because angels send the inhabitants back to 1901.
And then back in 1901, do the same thing there, too; and anyone who is sent back more than once dies.
WHICH IS INTERESTING GIVEN THAT THEY SUPPOSEDLY COULD SET UP A "BATTERY FARM" IN MANHATTAN AND SEND PEOPLE BACK REPEATEDLY NO I WILL NEVER BE OVER THE LORE BREAKING OF THAT EPISODE-
Anyway, this one's great. Tonnes of tense, creepy horror, and trying to run away while yelling "DON'T BLINK", although they could all do with working on their teamwork in this field, to be honest. Like, if there are two of you, maybe one of you do the angel observing and not blinking and the other do the looking where you're both fucking going and guiding? Maybe? Maybe that's a good idea? Maybe trade off who's doing which job? Maybe don't all try staring and walking backwards at the same time, thus stumbling into each other/more angels? Really atmospheric, though, proper tense. Also, new lore introduced! Whatever holds the image of an angel can itself become an angel, with a lot of energy on their part. This makes The Angels Take Manhattan even more deeply stupid, since the Statue of Liberty is possibly the most photographed statue in the world, but okay.
Anyway. Claire the psychic is from the present day, but is possessed by a fugitive angel that's on the run from Division. The others are trying to capture it. She gets sent to 1967 by one, but the one possessing her is hiding inside her. Yaz and Dan get whipped back to 1901 while looking for a lost 10 year old called Peggy, who it emerges has been angelled, and also becomes the old woman who knew this was coming in 1967. The whole village, it seems, has been "quantum extracted" - pulled out of space/time to extract the fugitive. While fleeing, Jericho gets angelled and lands with Yaz and Dan, which explains why he was running around the 1910s with them before.
But, the angels take the Doctor instead of the rogue one. We know that bit! We saw that last time.
Meanwhile, some minor arc - Vinder the beautiful man is still searching for Bel. Bel, though, finds her way to a planet that supposedly offers 'salvation', a woman who arrives to take survivors away to a safe haven from the Flux. Turns out it's the beautiful geode lady though. She takes the survivors into Passenger, which is an endless prison. Bel saves an ungrateful man from this, and then swans off into the universe to stop it, so well done her.
LET'S TALK ABOUT JERICHO THOUGH I love him. I love him very much. Kevin McNally plays a fucking blinder with him. Oddly, watching the show in this order really made us feel the horror and impact of the First World War, but not so much WW2 - I think the forays into it were mostly either played for laughs (punching Hitler) or jingoistic tedium about sucking off Churchill, with no real sense of the impact at all. But Jericho has a great little monologue at one point, after the Doctor admires how his scientist mind wants to understand things, and so doesn't stop to be scared. "I was one of the first British soldiers into Belsen after the War," he says. "If you think a few stone statues will destroy my equilibrium, you are mistaken." He also has a spectacular moment where multiple angels suddenly break into the room, and he squares the fuck up to them with all the gravitas and power and titanium-spined energy of David before Goliath and commands them "You stop right there. You are observed, and that is my power over you."
God fucking damn it. Incredible. What a character, what an actor, what lines. Ugh. Perfect.
Anyway, plot threads! Let's see. I mean we have LOTS of planets that have disappeared. Maybe that's the Flux? That seems logical; when Bel reaches the ungrateful man, he tells her that the planet they're on is the last, most intact one in the sector ("A third of a sun, quarter of a moon, half a planet"). Um, the TARDIS is sort of broken/not working again, but then we start the episode with an angel piloting it somehow, so... is that why? And, why is the beautiful geode woman stealing people into a Passenger form?
Fortunately, we don't need to add any plot threads about Division, because that's already been resolved. This watch order is stupid.
“She” (an unknown person) is returning (perhaps River returned as Missy. Maybe Me? Maybe Clara???!)
There is something on Donna’s back
An entire planet, Pyrovilia, just… disappeared, somehow. (Maybe because the TARDIS is exploding??? Saturnine was also lost, and that WAS because of the TARDIS exploding. The lion man’s planet was also lost but he was a bit of a knob about it if I’m honest. The Thijarian planet was destroyed by some sort of impact). NEW INFO: is this the Flux?
Amy is maybe dead (she’s not)
The Doctor has been cubed (he’s out, but how?)
River is possibly blown up  (unless she’s Missy. Nope: she is definitely not blown up)
The TARDIS has blown up  (It’s fine now. Except it’s sort of melting now because it’s corrupted, but it’s fine again. NEW INFO: NOPE, back to not working.)
The universe appears to have ended  (the universe is back again)
The Doctor has employed(?) Nardole
(And Nardole was “reassembled???” Nardole had glass nipples and invisible hair?? WHAT THE FUCK IS HE)
There’s a vault in the TARDIS and it contains Missy but we don’t know why (sometimes she knocks for the bants)
There’s an immortal Viking girl now. Her name is Me and she’s now looking after the people the Doctor abandons
Why was Rory entirely unconcerned by the entire world suddenly going silent when that is Not Normal and should have been, at the very least, extremely disconcerting?
What did the Doctor do to Queen Lizzie One?
Why is Amy seeing a one-eyed woman in a vanishing window? (She’s with the Silents, but we don’t know why Amy saw her)
Why is Amy’s pregnancy inconclusive? (Maybe because the baby had Time Lord DNA?)
Who is Sarah-Jane Smith?
How is the Doctor Bill’s teacher and why/where does he have an office?
What is going on with the Cyber War and the Cyberium???
What happened with the Other Cyber War?
What happened with the Third War that deleted the void?
Why does Rose seem particularly important?
What order do these Doctors go in? (Eccleston, Tennant, uncertain, Smith, Capaldi, Whittaker)
Which companion just… forgot the Doctor, and how?
Yaz and Vinder are about to die as Mori/Mwri/Muuri (NEW INFO: not anymore, somehow)
There is a Lupari shield around Earth.
What’s a Time War?
What’s the Rift?
What’s Bad Wolf?
In which war did the Doctor become a war criminal, and how?
Who is the Master?
Why has Amy forgotten Rory? How did she forget a Dalek invasion?
Is Rory plastic or not?
Why is the Doctor sulking on a cloud?
How exactly does the Doctor have a cloud?
What exactly happened with Strax to, uh, tame him?
Which friend killed Strax?
Which friend brought Strax back?
Where did this lesbian lizard and human couple come from?
What happened with Clara as Souffle Girl and the Daleks?
How does Clara actually join?
Why so many Claras?
Why is Missy apparently in robo-heaven?
Why is probably!Missy pushing Clara and the Doctor together?
What is Trensilor and what happened there?
Who is Handles?
The Doctor is about to be dissolved by a beautiful geode man
The universe is being crushed by the Flux
Will the Doctor open the fobwatch?
Sontarans are invading Earth again
Who is Kate?
Who is Osgood? Another name of Clara’s again?
The fuck is the deal with the Grand Serpent
Does Martha get to go to an ice cream planet with 12-fingered massage aliens?
How did the Doctor forget Clara?
Who is Bill’s puddle girlfriend Heather?
How did Nardole die?
When does Bill get Cyberman-ed and die?
When does the Doctor shrink and enter a Dalek called Rusty?
Whittaker is falling to her death rn
Was that ring relevant?
Does anyone know the Doctor’s name?
When did Yaz talk to Dan about fancying the Doctor?
When did Dan talk to the Doctor about fancying Yaz?
What’s happening with the bees?
What happened with Donna’s ex and a giant spider?
What war wiped out the Daleks, and is it one of the ones already mentioned?
What did the Doctor mean when he said “The (Daleks) always live, while I lose everything?”
If Dalek Caan is the last Dalek left why are there more now?
How did the rest of the Time Lords die?
How and why did Amy melt?
What’s the question that will make silence fall?
Why do the Silents… want silence to fall?
How and why are Silents at war with the Doctor when he… hasn’t even heard of them?
How does Hitler get out of the cupboard?
What’s the significance of fish fingers and custard?
Why does the Doctor feel guilt about Rose, Martha and Donna?
What happened with the space whale?
When does Rory defend Amy for 2000 years?
How does the Doctor survive River
How does he erase himself from history
Did Captain Jack lose his memories to the same people as the Doctor? What did he lose?
When did the Doctor send the Daleks into a void to save the universe?
What’s with the weird crack in the wall and is it affecting memories?
Why do Amy and Rory think the Doctor is dead?
Is Matt Smith’s Doctor a tree racist?
Why is the beautiful geode woman stealing people into a Passenger form?

hey) I'm reading a bukowski (aka harry's favourite poet is I remember correctly?) poetry collection right now and I was wondering if we as a fandom knew that because I wasn't here when the album came out so I might have missed people talking about it? so I saw he has a poem called bluebird (which is already 🤔), but then I read it and and omg he's talking about a "bluebird" living inside him and him not letting this "bluebird" out because it would ruin his career!!! (I don't have the book at hand right now sorry you should read it yourself probably my memory is shit) harry would definitely connect to it, wouldn't he, see his situation with glass closet in it and maybe that's what he's referencing when talking about a bluebird?
hey babe!! yeah we have been dabbling in bukowski, or at least i have (esp in my only angel post, a song that features bukowski writing at the beginning). i know for sure that not nearly every reference has been unearthed. i don't think it's possible to get them all tbh. i'm not an avid poetry reader, but i have to admit i like bukowski's poetry from time to time. this one, bluebird, was brought to my attention after harry's house! you can read a post here but it's just us screaming into the void jhsgfd. but now that you've sent this to me and i'm bored at work i figured i'd dive a little deeper.
There's a bluebird in my heart that Wants to get out but I'm too tough for him I say, stay in there, I'm not going To let anybody see you There's a bluebird in my heart that Wants to get out But I pour whiskey on him and inhale Cigarette smoke And the whores and the bartenders And the grocery clerks never know that He's in there
'bluebird', unclear as to what that means to the poet. but it's soft <> tough. ~"somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly," from the wizard of oz / "if i was a bluebird, i would fly to you," daylight. strong associations with the queer identity // a desire to fly away: sott, if i could fly, matilda, etc.
this paragraph is so hs1 to me. drinking, smoking, getting high, having sex, anything to think about what's truly inside of you. then i can't help but think about fine line's "we'll get the drinks in, so i get to thinking of her" where it's the other way around.
the bluebird is also real to bukowski, he's undeniably inside of him, he doesn't try to disprove that. he just hides him by keeping up a different persona, by having a hardened outer shell. // harry and his image
'i'm too tough for him' implies that it's his own choice to keep his bluebird hidden
There's a bluebird in my heart that Wants to get out but I'm too tough for him I say, Stay down, do you want to mess Me up? You want to screw up the Works? You want to blow my book sales in Europe? There's a bluebird in my heart that
the implication that if you show your true inner self, you don't sell as well. what secret about you could possibly fuck over your career? - brings the hiding of the bluebird in a new light, since this is an external motivation to change who you are
~"what if i'm down, what if i'm out? what if i'm someone you won't talk about?", falling
~"put a price on emotion, i'm looking for something to buy. you've got my devotion, but man i can hate you sometimes," fine line
~"i'm not going to get lost, i'm not going to go broke, staying cool," mfasr
Wants to get out But I'm too clever, I only let him out At night sometimes when everybody's asleep I say, I know that you're there So don't be sad Then I put him back But he's singing a little In there, I haven't quite let him die And we sleep together like that With our secret pact And it's nice enough to make a man Weep, but I don't weep, do You?
this reminds me of harry saying he feels most beautiful when he's asleep.
~"just stop your crying, it's a sign of the times"
it just fits so much of harry's art, where he pretends to be someone he's not and tries to come to terms with how people see him or how he sees himself. bukowski spent a lot of his career struggling with who he was, and same goes for harry. even though he's clearly in a more accepting era, he still battles with that split in his life - public and private.
i also think the poem's ending can be seen in a more positive light, as the poet taking control of his life and his privacy. he determines what others see of him. in this layered poem, where the poet makes it seem like he's acting of his own volition by keeping his bluebird tucked away from view, but actually lets it be known that he kind of has to, the issue of one's identity in the industry is prodded at. i think for harry, in a life where he has very little control anyway, his decision to put a giant lock on his private life is about the only one he could make. he probably could still have a personal instagram or twitter acc if he wanted to, showing non-descriptive holiday pics or whatever. he chooses not to, and this is only in recent years that he's begun to be more and more secretive. because maybe it's either all or nothing to him. either the cage is shut or the bluebird flies free

Tie-ins that would've made The Power of the Doctor a better finale for 13's whole era:
Karvanista & The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos
Swap the space train in the opening for Karvanista, Bel & Vinder's makeshift family, transporting the cargo on behalf of the Coalition of Galaxies from The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos. Karvanista recognises when the Cybermasters regenerate.
Bel: Being boarded by Cybermen once was more than enough, thank you very much.
When 13 sends Dan to stop the ship crashing he gets to spar with Karvanista again
Dan: Hello, Muttley my son. It's been a while
Karvanista: Just what I need. Leave, you'll only make everything worse-
Dan: Rubbish, I just need to wave my space wand and-
[the ship accelerates]
Karvanista: Space wand'? Bloody useless! In my day she didn't need that rubbish.
Dan: Eh?
He is still bitter- he doesn't want to be saved by 13 and when she fails to stop the Cybermasters he rips into her.
Tumblr media
13: You're working for the Coalition of Galaxies now? Why?
Karvanista: Because two-thirds of the universe got destroyed and then suddenly reappeared after weeks of chaos. They need all the help they can get, and you certainly weren't offering, were you?
Karvanista has a heart-to-heart with Dan after his near-death experience, encouraging him to leave 13 before she leaves him, or before he has some unresolvable trauma. A moment of closure for their relationship.
Afterwards, Yaz asks why Karvanista was so angry. 13 finally opens up to her about her history, some character progression at the end of her era.
13: We used to travel together. When I was Ruth. Remember her?
Yaz: Of course.
13: We were... sort of time spies together. For Division.
Yaz: The people who sent the Weeping Angels after you?
13: And the Judoon after Ruth. But my memory of that time was taken and I don't want it back. I want to focus on now. On our moment. On you. And Dan-
Dan, from the doors:: You don't have to come back for me.
13, closing her eyes. Taking a steadying breath: Oh. OK.
13 REPLACES DAN'S HOUSE because leaving him homeless feels careless and callous.
13: I get it. Life's important. Home's important. Speaking of...
[She produces Dan's miniaturised house on a little metal disc]
13: Just press the button and this should take care of itself. That, or you'll be transported to the moon. Worth a shot though, eh?
Dan: You just had that in your pocket ready to go?
13: I knew you'd ask to go back eventually, Dan. When you did... I didn't want to be holding you hostage.
Replace the being of pure energy with the young Ux from The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos, who went on to travel the universe. The Master uses him to construct his cyber-planet like Tim Shaw did. By saving them again 13 comes full circle from her first series.
Tumblr media
Once they've discovered the Ux hooked up to the cyber-planet, 13 calls Karvanista & co. Karavanista comes alone. When he crashes he reports in to Mark Addy’s character from Ranskoor, who appears via video screen. He promised the Ux he would keep them safe
Tumblr media
Karvanista recognises the TARDIS exterior, and that it's been perverted- it brings back bad memories.
The Master & Nikola Tesla
Ra-Ra-Rasputin is a great moment, but I’d swap the Master taking over the Winter Palace for him taking over Wardencliff, the power station from Nikola Tesla’s Night of Terror, in the weeks before it shut down. The Master took advantage of Tesla’s desperation with an offer to fund him. Then he hypnotises Tesla into helping him build the cages that will force 13 to regenerate.
The Master kills Miss Skeritt
Getting 13’s favourite historical figure to build the thing that kills her is a huge personal blow. The Master rubs in 13’s face that by ‘abandoning’ Tesla and allowing history to happen as it should, she let this happen.
Tumblr media
(This would require the missing paintings plotpoint to be cut- instead Ace could be investigating a sudden acceleration in Earth's technology, which she traces back to a now hyper-successful Nikola Tesla in the 1920s)
The Master-Doctor
The traitor Dalek is the last surviving mutant from Revolution of the Daleks, justifying why it wants the ‘original’ Daleks dead
Instead of trapping 13 in a Dalek casing, use one of Chibnall’s best gimmicks- a Dalek mutant that puppeteers her
When the Master becomes the Doctor, insert a scene of him causing a jailbreak, blowing a hole in the side of the Judoon prison 13 was held in in Revolution of the Daleks. An Angel abducts a Judoon through the flickering lights, the P'Ting eats one of the guard's guns.
Master: This is payback for locking me up. [to the escaping prisoners] when you're out there spreading chaos through the uuniverse, tell them the Doctor sent you!
Tumblr media
Then, the twin planets he visits are the ones from Can You Hear Me?- Yaz watches helplessly as the Master summons the two evil gods from their universe and encourages them 'play' with the planets. They agree, and then the war begins.
Tumblr media
The Master brings the hypnotised Tesla along as a 'companion' to restrain Yaz
Fugitive Doctor Resolution
Karvanista is the one to threaten & shoot the Master. He also comes face-to-face with the Fugitive, his Doctor.
As 13 leaves the mindscape with the Guardians of the Edge, the Fugitive apears and says she's glad she could help save 13 from the same fate that befell her
After 13 has been saved, Karvanista and the Fugitive hologram have a heart-to-heart like 5 & 7 do with Ace & Tegan, giving him closure & resolving his bitterness.
THASMIN KISS immediately after Yaz saves 13, when her guard is down in her post-regeneration haze, overcome with joy. This makes the ending more tragic, but 13 doesn't look cruel like she would for initiating that intimacy when she knows she's dying, opening a door she knows she can't go through
When they meet Graham again, instead of saying 'She's still not explaining anything, then?' he notes how much more open 13 is and is happy for Yaz.
After being freed from the Master's hypnotism, Tesla joins them in the TARDIS and helps 13 rebuild Karvanista's ship.
Thasmin & Demons of the Punjab
THASMIN HUG GODDAMN IT. 13 removes the hologram implant from Yaz, but then gifts it back to her as she leaves- the same projector she had in Survivors of the Flux. She says "This is us, forever. Our moment in time.", calling back to the watch from Demons of the Punjab
Tumblr media
It'd also be nice to call back to 13’s speech on her family from The Woman Who Fell to Earth:
Yaz: I'm not sure I can do this without you. You helped me.. helped me learn who I am-
13: And now you know. You don't need me, Yaz. I needed you in the end. Look at everything you did today, on your own. You saved me. Just- carry me with you, if you can. Just do that. What I would've thought and said and done. Make that a part of you. That way... I might be going now, but I'll never be gone from you, eh?
Yaz, huffing through tears: What would the Doctor do?
13: What would you do?
When Dan arrives he is with Diane
The Thijarian Assassins from Demons of the Punjab are seen in the background throughout the episode, like the Ood in the buildup to The End of Time, and they exchange a look of understanding with her as she regenerates

‭Matthew 2:1-23 NIV‬
[1] After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem [2] and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” [3] When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. [4] When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. [5] “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: [6] “ ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” [7] Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. [8] He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” [9] After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. [10] When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. [11] On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. [12] And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. [13] When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” [14] So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, [15] where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.” [16] When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. [17] Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: [18] “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.” [19] After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt [20] and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.” [21] So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. [22] But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, [23] and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.

Thorn Bush (Doctor Who Story)
Chapter 40: Across the Pond
Masterlist
3rd April 1938 AD/CE
Kathy stands at the entryway of an apartment in downtown New York, shrugging on her coat and collecting her umbrella.
"I'll be back tomorrow, Mrs Reading. Eight o'clock alright?" Kathy calls.
An older woman who's in her 80s emerges from around the corner into the little hallway, her feet shuffling along the carpet. Her body heavily relies on the walking frame that she clings to.
The woman gives her a warm smile. "I told you to call me Oswald, Kathy."
Kathy smiles at her tightly, her heart breaking at the sight of the woman. Yes, she had gone and found another echo of Clara's though this was accidental but she couldn't help but stick around. As far as she's aware, this Clara hasn't met the Doctor.
"I wish you'd listen to my advice and move into a ground floor apartment or a home, Oswald."
Oswald kisses her teeth, tutting. "I told you, Kathy. I'm not moving. You go now."
With one last goodbye, Kathy steps out into the cold dark night to make her way home.
She's walking along to her flat and freezes when she sees herself along with the Doctor, River, Amy and an unknown woman with light brown hair like Kathy's spring out of a building. She stands there in shock as the Doctor, River, Amy and the unknown woman (who is that?) clamber inside the car but Kathy (future) pauses for a moment and looks up straight at current Kathy. Her blue eyes twinkle as she flashes a wink at Kathy (current) before climbing into the car along with the others, who had been yelling for her to hurry up and get into the car with them – Amy in particular which, considering that her husband has been taken by the angels, is understandable.
Once future her is inside, the car is speeding off to Winter Quay. Probably before future her had even had the chance to secure her seatbelt and while Kathy knows an accident wouldn't kill her considering she's got the power to heal herself, the inconvenience of it is not fun.
Current Kathy gapes after them before she turns her gawping towards the building they had emerged from. She had been looking down that she hadn't realised she's outside Julius Grayle's home, who's an art collector and mob boss and some of his collected artefacts include Weeping Angels.
She kind of wants to slap herself on the forehead. This is the year that Amy and Rory are sent into the past by a weeping angel to and from when they'll live out the rest of their lives never seeing the Doctor again. How had she not realised this? She blames it on being too focused on the Clara echo she'd found. Though finding the echo should have been a clue as Clara is split throughout the Doctor's timeline, why wouldn't the Doctor be nearby if she is?
She freezes when a thought goes across her mind. Julius Grayle had also kept his door very securely locked for a reason. Her gaze turns to the Weeping Angels that had been standing outside the building in the form of a woman and a child. Kathy panics when she realises they're in mid-moving towards the open door. Kathy decides she should leave before she gets involved. This is her future, she can't get involved but she can wait until Rory and Amy are sent back the final time and step in then.
——
Amy gasps awake, quickly sitting up to look around frantically. "Rory? Rory!"
She realises she's still in the graveyard that she had been in when Rory got taken and Amy made her choice, a choice she believed and that was to follow her husband but now she can't see him.
Suddenly, a hand is touching her arm gently. Amy startles and yanks back but relaxes once she realises it's Kathy.
"He's fine." The part Time Lord, part Human and part Apalapucian tries to reassure her.
"Kathy, how are you here? Where's the Doctor? What about Ivy—"
She cuts herself off when she realises something. This Kathy looks different to the one she was just with, her clothing being an obvious factor. She looks like she blends in more with 1930s New York more than the Kathy Amy had just been with. The one who had promised her that she was making the right decision. Also, her eyes somehow look younger.
"Who's Ivy?" Kathy questions frowning. "Is she the girl you were with? Who was that?"
"Uh..." Amy really should be better at this after all this time of knowing Kathy and the Doctor. How does she get out of this without spilling any spoilers? "Spoilers."
Kathy pulls a disgruntled look that Amy would normally laugh at if it wasn't for the fact that she doesn't know where Rory is.
"Urgh, I hate that River taught you that."
"Actually, you did."
Kathy blinks. "Oh yeah, maybe I did."
"AMY?!"
Rory rounds the monuments at high speed, careering towards her. Amy catches him as she keeps towards her husband.
——
Kathy opens the door to her flat, and shuffles in the tired and emotionally drained Ponds.
"You're lucky that I have a spare room and Carlyle isn't visiting." Kathy says to break the silence they've all been wrapped in on the walk over.
"Thank you, Kathy." Rory manages a small smile as he and Amy take off their shoes at the entrance.
Amy's silent, after her initial panic and then relief at finding Rory, the redhead had shut down, going into a state of shock and Kathy doesn't blame her. While she's sure that this is the right decision, Amy has to process the fact that she won't ever see the Doctor or their families again.
"Erm, yes, anyway, the room is the second door on your left as you go up the stairs," she gestures towards the stairs as they walk through the hallway, "bathroom is across the hall so please feel free to use that. There's clothes in the wardrobe for both of you though they probably won't fit you, uh, we can go shopping soon to get you some and, um—"
"Thank you, Kathy, again. Uh, we're tired so we'll just go to bed." Rory says apologetically.
Yeah, she had been rambling.
"Of course."
Rory and Amy go upstairs while Kathy stays downstairs and decides she could make them some sandwiches maybe and leave it for them to eat when they want to. When she brings it upstairs, Amy, towel wrapped around her head, murmurs a quick thank you before she retreats into the bedroom once more with Rory and Kathy goes back downstairs to cook her own food.
She's happy to see them as the last time she saw them was in Hollywood earlier in the decade where they were all confronted with the Rock Quaser films, Rick "Crusty" Cobbe and slugs and it all ending with Rory having a starring role in the last serial. It's strange to think that there are still so many adventures with Amy and Rory that she still hasn't done (on TV and off) and to think she's now seen them at the end of it all.
One last thought in her mind before she goes to sleep that night is the thought that ever since she was little, she had always wanted to call one of her children, if they were a girl, Ivy.
——
After their arrival, Kathy continues to happily support the Ponds while they set up and adapt to their new life in 1930s New York. Amy especially struggles at first, hardly going out. Kathy tries little things at first, such as going to the shops for some milk or bread but then Kathy begins to encourage Amy to help her out with looking after Oswald, Clara's echo, when Kathy gets too busy. Carlyle and Ashildr turn up briefly and pull her and Rory out with them on a double date. Carlyle tells Kathy afterwards that Ashildr held back on her scathing remarks about the Doctor.
Two months into Amy and Rory's stay, there's a knock on Kathy's door. Immediately she knows it can't be Carlyle as she would have sensed it, Ashildr doesn't normally come without him and if she did, she would send a message ahead, Jack is in Cardiff and Amy and Rory have been scooping out job vacancies to start getting them on their own two feet – despite Kathy's insistence that they don't need to rush – wouldn't have returned yet so who could it be?
She opens the door and finds—
"River?"
"Hey, honey."
River is smiling hesitantly, her arms are flexing at her sides as if she's trying to hold back. Kathy realises that she must be waiting to see what Kathy will do first. She can only imagine how it must be for River. This is only the third time Kathy has met her but River's probably met her multiple times. It must hurt.
Kathy quickly smiles to show that she's happy to see her, because she is, and pulls River into a tight hug. River relaxes into it, holding her tightly and letting out a heavy sigh as she tucks her head into the gap between Kathy's neck and shoulder.
——
"Carlyle not here?" River asks as she lounges on the settee in the living room, sipping the tea Kathy had handed her.
"Er, no," Kathy replies as she sorts the cushions on her chair to make it comfortable all while trying to balance her tea in the other hand without spilling, "he and– do you know Ashildr?"
"I do." River answers, that unreadable expression on her face which often appears. Kathy hopes that one day she'll know what it means.
Kathy shakes her head and instead takes a seat, turning to River once again. "Yes, um, they're off doing their own thing. Always seem to these days. Are you close with them?"
"Spoilers." River smirks, casually sipping her tea. Kathy pulls a face. Mother like daughter it would seem. "Don't look so disgruntled, you taught me that."
"I only say it cause you do." Kathy retorts with a laugh and River returns it.
They quieten again and River then brings out her diary, flicking through. "So, when did we last see each other?"
Kathy takes a sip of her tea, taking the chance to think over her answer. Technically the last time she had seen River was at Trenzalore with a River that had been to the library. She's not going to be telling River that.
"Pandorica."
"Ah, early days then." There's a sad smile on her face. Kathy chooses not to acknowledge it for her benefit.
"Knowing you, maybe, not my lifetime. I'm one thousand four hundred eight now." She says.
"Eh, I heard one thousand four hundred eight is the new one hundred." River retorts cheekily.
Kathy laughs, rolling her eyes. "Sure."
The conversation flows easily after that, there's hardly a pause. Kathy is reminded once again how easy it is to be around River, and how they get along so well.
"River?"
Kathy and River look over to the doorway to see River's parents standing there. River is quickly wrapped in her parents' arms. Somehow River looks like a little girl between her parents despite the fact she's physically older than them. Kathy smiles at the sight.
"Hey, mum, dad, I was just visiting– um, Kathy." River gestures towards Kathy, who'd stayed back to not interrupt. There's a look shared between the three of them, which leaves Kathy feeling like an outsider.
She shakes it off, she knows she'll find out one day, and speaks, "Uh, you guys must be hungry. River when was the last time you ate?"
River smiles at her fondly. "I know how to look after myself." She retorts but there's no heat to her voice.
Kathy blushes slightly when she realises that she was mothering a bit which really isn't her place. "Sure you do." She turns to Amy and Rory who seem to be caught in a moment of staring at her and River. "Amy, Rory?"
"Uh, yeah, let's eat." Rory quickly replies shuffling into the kitchen along with Kathy and his wife and daughter.
——
River writes The Angel's Kiss: A Melody Malone Mystery book with Amy writing the afterword to the Doctor. The book's success means that Amy and Rory can find their own place as they settle in but make sure it's nearby. They have dinner once a week at which River stops by often.
As a result of the first book's success River wrote a prequel book, The Angel's Kiss, and likewise gifted the profits to her parents. Rory gets a job at the local hospital as a nurse though Kathy encourages him to one day pursue becoming a doctor if he'd like while Amy takes over Melody Malone's books from River though one day she catches sight of a familiar-looking book called Summer Falls, a favourite of a certain Clara Oswald. Kathy smirks at that.
They'll be alright.

Saints of God. The heart of Jesus is encouraging many now. Don’t give up saints. The night is dark. But oh the glory of Jesus presence has increased. It is increasing. Jesus says to you,
“Oh my dear beloved ones,
Just as the gross darkness covers the earth; the glory realm of my priceless, precious is all around you even more. All of creation is crying out. It is groaning for the sons and daughters of God to take their places and pray. The glory realm that many of you have prayed for and begged me for is here. This glory realm isn’t a small thing. There’s a tidal wave of glory being unleashed. The third great awakening is here. The great soul harvest. The time and the hour has never been far more urgent than it is right now. Press on into my glory and my presence. Saints of God. You are being strengthened. There are ministering angels of the most high God all around you. For the Bible days that angels are ministering spirits sent by God to release healing life unto the saints. Don’t let your eyes and your heart succumb to the fear that is all around you. It’s time to place your eyes on me, completely. Don’t look to the right or to the left. But. I want you to keep your eyes directly set on Me. You can see it. The glory realms. The glory waves. There’s a remnant that I’ve set apart. My mighty army. Many of you have been cast aside from the ways of the world. The misfits. Those considered different. Remember. My word says that I work through those who are considered foolish in the world to confound the wise. It won’t be those who believe they are better than everyone else. No. It will
Be those who gave their all to me. Those who have their eyes directly set on me. They are my servants of Holy Ghost supernatural fire. My reckless ones. The ones who have been hidden in caves for so long. They are emerging from their caves. They are leaving the dry zones and they are stepping out into the glory realm. I have prepared them. I have set them apart. From long even before the very foundations of the earth even was or ever is; They are different. Set apart. A peculiar people. Precious. Chosen. I am working through them. The season is now. Beloveds. What you’ve waited for is here. The time to step out. The time to be boldness. The time to trust me with all you’ve got. I’ve got this. I’ve got your back beloveds. No matter what anybody has ever said to you. It can never diminish what I’ve spoken over you. Priceless. Anointed. Called. Redeemed. Appointed. Oh my dear beloveds. I just weep when I think of the beauty of your hearts. I am healing you now. I am removing the traumas. The pain. The sting of rejection. Forgive. Forgive all who have ever hurt you. I am restoring you to a place where you were never hurt. To a time where your heart was never broken. You are breathing freely again. Now. Breathe. Joy and my perfect peace is filling you right now. Don’t fear the future. The very best is yet to come. For the spirit of the Bride says, “Come!” You can feel the shift. The season is different. The season has changed. Oh beloved. The countdown to eternity has now BEGUN.
I love you. I love you all. All of my love.
-Jesus

He was my best friend, my brother I've always had his back. My original family ties were broken, he was my family, and our ties were fully intact. I watched as he lied on his death bed. His body became a prison I could not free him from. Where I laid eyes on him is where I had to leave him. Screaming whispers in his ears leaving messages with his spirit. I pictured him negotiating at heavens gate. Telling the gate-keeper, his wings he'll now take. Now, I am a brothers keeper with no brother to keep. I was deeply wounded, in pain but could not weep. I still feel the ache in my chest. Have to stay strong, hold the pain to the chest. Where there stood two, now stands one. The dreams we dreamt now mine alone. I repented and atoned, you told me it was possible, but now you're not here to see your vision fruition. I've experienced so much, I'll always remember when I stood beside you. I hold the sound of your voice in my mind, what I'd give to hear that voice one more time. But I am alone now, and I'm writing these words to you, thinking of you. Carrying the weight grief leaves behind, pallbearer.
You laid in that hospital bed you didn't want to leave, I saw the heartache in your eyes. So much love in the room all your greatest creations complete. Around your hospital bed, the jewels of your eye. It was time, you were tired, but holding strong. As only a queen of your stature could. Your children and grandbabies loved the last days of life into you. You've had generations sitting on your lap. You survived so much when I study your life and look back. We cherished the short time left, you shared secrets. Told me you were proud, just when I got home, you have to leave now. You said you were waiting on me. I smiled when you said it then...I cry when I remember it now. You would sit in your chair and let me sing tunes to you. I knew this day may come but could never picture life without you. I miss you so much, your hand I use to touch. I hold the sound of your voice in my mind, what I'd give to hear that voice one more time. I am alone now, and I'm writing these words to you. Remembering my Granny forever, telling my kids, old memories. Carrying the weight grief leaves behind, pallbearer.
I'll never forget you. In every tear I cry for you. I rember the night, 9:52pm with you in my arms. Tears running down my cheeks. The tears still run, as I am thankful for the profound effect your 4 months of life had on mine. It all seems like a dream. A pivotal moment, a beautiful nightmare I once had. That nightmare a memory, a reminder that it was all too real. The screaming, the police, the throwing of dirt on your casket. Unknowingly sent me to a realm of unprovoked madness. A club no parent wants to belong to. I lost myself to find who I truly am, the sorrow of the loss put me in that casket. Buried myself with you. Your death, my death, our death became my rebirth, I came back up from the dirt. May you approve of the man I have become. Losing you was a beat down, but it was your spirit that brought me back to my feet. My Angel, my north star in my sky that guides me. I know you're with me may I never be lost. Your siblings love you in knowing you existed keep your name in their thoughts. They admit you were the only baby more prettier than them.
I know now, I didn't lose you I gained a purpose. A sight, so down the path I can see. I'd give all its blessings back to see you grow into a beautiful woman you were meant to be. But I am alone now, finding strength in these tears I cry writing these words to you. Carrying the weight grief leaves behind, pallbearer.

Y/N took in a deep breath of the cold night air, and let it out in a shudder. It was a strange feeling that filled her, with the knowledge of what she was about to do. She was scared, most definitely, but there was something else. Something that she couldn’t quite put her finger on. Whatever it was, the strong feeling had built in her chest as her and The Doctor ran up the stairs to the roof. It had sprouted like a plant in her heart, woven vines around her ribs until it was all tangled in her, inseparable.
The Statue of Liberty was not what she expected to see as she turned around, but that was not scarier than what was to come. If anything, it was funny. She was about to spend her last moments stood in eyeline with the iconic green statue. Her eyes locked onto the giant angel, refusing to even blink. Getting caught by a Weeping Angel would be bad, but by the Statue of Liberty? That would just be embarrassing.
“Keep your eyes on it!” Her eyes cast over towards The Doctor as he yelled, and emotion crawled up the back of her throat until it threatened to make her cry. There had been a door downstairs with her name on, and without thinking he had opened it. And she was on the other side - older, much older. She had spent years at the hotel, and she was dying there. Dying of old age. The Doctor had been too stunned to speak as he crouched beside her, the older her, and held her hand as she died. She had been so happy to see him, so happy that it meant she hadn’t seen him in a long while.
River had finally managed to explain, as The Doctor was at a loss for words. “That’s you in the future… I’m sorry, Y/N, I’m so sorry. But if you’re here now, then that means the angels will send you back in time. You'll grow old and die here. It’s fixed, there’s nothing we can do.”
But River had been wrong. The only thing that could be done struck Y/N as she ran upstairs to the roof, and as scared as she was, she knew that it was the only way.
The Doctor was staring at the statue, and was rambling about something. The heartbeat that thumped in her ears like a torment of what she had to do blocked it out, and she only was able to climb onto the wall opposite the statue on the edge of the building because he wasn’t watching.
The wall was just wide enough for her feet, and as she balanced on the edge of the roof, her heart rate rose further, almost completely drowning out anything else with the torment. Ha-ha… ha-ha… ha-ha. Her arms stretched out to balance herself against the wind, which threatened to push her off of the edge. But of course, it wasn’t that easy. She either needed to fall backwards, or ask him to push her.
“Y/N what the hell are you doing!” Her eyes cast down on his horrified expression as the first tear fell. The angel was still visible in his general direction, so thankfully it wouldn’t move. How could she do this to him? Make him watch her die? Despite it needing to be done, it was torment. He stumbled forwards in a panic and reached to pull her down by the wrist, but she quickly moved her arm away, and almost sent herself over the edge. She stumbled on the wall with a frightened gasp, and her bottom lip quivered with the realisation that no, she couldn’t do it herself.
“Please…” Her voice cracked as their eyes met. “Doctor don’t make this harder than it already is.”
“Don’t make what harder?” His breathing was ragged, panicked, and he shook his head as his expression scrunched up. “You don’t have to do this.” The pain across his face hurt, and spread that unnamed feeling through her again.
She was properly crying at that point, and sniffled as she glanced between him and the angel. “Just… listen to me, and if I’m wrong I’ll get down okay? And I really really want to be wrong, because I am terrified,” He nodded, frantically, but the look in his eyes told her that he knew she wouldn’t be getting down. “I die downstairs when I’m ninety, right? One of the angels sends me back in time and I die there,” His bottom lip quivered as he nodded. “So if I die here, now, then none of that will happen. There’ll be a paradox and the angels will die and this building will have never existed!”
The Doctor was silent for a moment, speechless, and she nodded as she swallowed the lump that had formed in her throat. “The one time I was counting on you to be right.” She laughed through the sob that escaped her throat.
“Y/N please, there has to be another way…” His voice shook with emotion, and when she looked back at him he was in tears too. “You can’t… I’ve already seen you die once today, I can’t-“
“If this building never existed then what did I fall off?” She breathed heavily as she wobbled with the next gust of wind.
“What, you think you’ll- you’ll just come back to life?”
“Pretty solid plan, don’t you think?”
“Y/N please just get down-“
“And besides, what’s the alternative?” Y/N looked at him through a tearful gaze. “Getting sent back in time and growing old here? Never seeing you again until I die?” She couldn’t imagine the torment of never being with him again. Never travelling the stars with her mad man with a box again. Never feeling the soft tweed around her whenever they hugged, the tickle of his hair on her forehead when he kissed her, the tight rip of his hand when they ran. If it was a life without him waiting for her when she stepped off of that ledge, then she didn’t want it. “Doctor I can’t get off of this roof the way you want me to.”
“Y/N please.” He was begging, completely in tears now, but something in his tone had changed. The tinge of defeat that clouded each syllable told her all that she needed to; he knew that she was right.
Her hand reached out towards him, and almost immediately he took it with his own. She interlocked their fingers and gave his hand a tight squeeze as she cried, before she lifted his hand and placed it against her chest, right above her heart. “I can’t do it myself, I need you to-“
“No, please-“
“Doctor,” She cried, gripping his hand tightly. “I need to do this.”
His eyes locked with hers, tears clouding the beautiful green, and he nodded once. A deep breath was sucked in, and her eyes squeezed shut in the anticipation of the push. It would be quick, she tried to convince herself. It would be quick and then the paradox will have stopped that from happening and she’d wake up somewhere else… hopefully.
But the push never came. Instead, his hand slipped out from underneath her grip, and he climbed up onto the wall beside her. He was extremely wobbly, and it took him a moment to keep his balance, but eventually he shuffled around to face her, and his hand took hers again.
“If it was me asking you to push,” His breathing was heavy as his fingers laced with hers. “If it was me, could you do it?”
Y/N sniffled through the tears and met his eyes with one single nod. “To save you, I could do anything.”
Y/N let go of his hand as he placed it on his waist, and she gripped onto the collar of his jacket as her arms looped around his neck. Their eyes met, and the unnamed feeling in her chest exploded, and she knew what it was. It was love. Love that had kept her going for all of these years, love that drove her to do what was right, love that had given her the bravery to get onto the roof in the first place; love for him. His grip on her waist was tight, but he wasn’t trembling anymore. Neither was she.
“I love you,” She spoke firmly through her tears. “So much. Thank you for everything… including this.”
“I love you too,” He managed a smile through his tears, and gripped onto her tighter as he took a shuffle closer towards the edge. “Together, or not at all.”
The door to the roof opened with a loud bang, but neither of them looked over towards the sound.
“Y/N! Doctor! What are you doing?!”
She managed a smile as she looked at him, her love. “Changing the future. It’s called love.”
Y/N took the final shuffle over the edge of the building, and then they were falling. She gripped onto him impossibly tight as the wind swirled around their embrace, and they spun as they fell through the air. His arms had made it completely around her waist, and as they neared the ground she felt his lips against her forehead. Her arms tightened around him even more, and she sobbed as she smiled into his shoulder.
They say your life flashes before your eyes when you die, but it doesn’t. Your love does. In that single moment, Y/N could have recalled every moment with The Doctor. From when she had met him, to when she fell in love with him, to when she had loved him. Every single moment that had led her onto the roof by the hand flashed in her mind, and made her grip onto him even tighter. As the ground grew closer, and her final breath was exhaled before they landed, she had never been more in love with him.
Together, or not at all.

LUCID | NCT DREAM ‘00 LINE X READER | CH.3
LUCID DREAMS - A TYPE OF DREAM WHEREIN THE PERSON IS AWARE THAT THEY ARE CAUGHT IN A DREAM WORLD.
Summary: It was supposed to be a harmless, professional transaction. You were to tutor a group of boys, get your pay at the end of the day, and go home to your loving fiance. Kids aren’t supposed to be dangerous, right? So why, then, are you caught up in a web of madness that slowly makes you feel like you’re in a living nightmare?
A/N: Third chapter is here! Again, thank you to all those who are supporting the story. Once again, this is a yandere plot featuring NCT Dream ‘00 line which means there will be mature themes in the story as well as obsessive, toxic behavior. If you’re a minor, please refrain from interacting. If this isn’t your thing, then just scroll and skip. In no way am I condoning anything written here— this is not love, this is obsession—nor do I think that any of the people mentioned here will act any way like in this story. This is purely a work of fiction.
Genre: yandere, horror, suspense
TW: abuse, obsessive behavior, toxic relationships, suggestive scenes, stalking, possible kidnapping, mental health. Age gap–though nothing dramatic. Everyone is of legal age. Creepy, creepy, creepy! This will be updated as the story goes along.
CHAPTER 1
CHAPTER 2
Tumblr media
“Insane madness of the living can be more, more terrible than the bloody hunger of the undead...”
― Silvia Liam
The rules of hunting down prey are simple. First, you observe to take note of their weakness, then you stalk...waiting for the right opportunity to take your shot. Hunting is more often about a game of time than aim sometimes. You jump too soon and you risk scaring your target to a successful escape, or you do it too late that you let them fully slip through your grasp. Hunting... has always been about perfect timing.
"You already know the rules of the game, right boy?"
The frail form of a seven year old child cowered against the foot of a dead tree, eyes shaking as it regarded the man leering at him. The sky was a deep dark velvet above them, and the only source of light came from the full moon that dipped in and out between the passing clouds. A bell dingled from the tight chain strapped around his left ankle when he moved, the sound causing the smile on the man's face twist into a wicked grin.
The hum of a gun being cocked sent the boy to give a choked sob. He shakily tried to stand up from his spot and pressed his palm against the rough bark of the tree to support himself, his wide eyes set on the looming form that has taken a step closer to where he stood.
"It's the first sturgeon moon tonight, so we are going to change the rules a little bit, okay?" Those words only made the child shake harder, the thin shirt he had now clinging to him like second skin due to the cold sweats gripping him.
"You run. And if I catch you, you die," the man cooed as he craned his face a bit to the side, causing the light from the moon to illuminate his features briefly. He looked handsome, inhuman, like he was one of the fallen souls exiled to earth at the beginning of times.
The man moved the arm holding his hunting gun and used it to lift the chin of the boy still cowering in front of him. He smiled—a smile so beautiful and dangerous it can make angels weep.
"But if you die, then your brothers will be the one running in this forest to take your place. So...make sure I don't catch you, hmm?"
Tears finally streamed down the bruised cheeks of the child as he realized what he was up to tonight. Eyes wide with fear, he pushed himself off the tree he was leaning on and started making a run for it.
He could still hear his words even as he dove deep into the woods, the bell on his feet masking his thundering footsteps.
"Seven bullets! You have one minute to hide, son~!"
Gunshots pierced the night air like a wailing scream.
------
Bang!
Jeno lowered his hunting rifle and let go of his breath slowly. Despite the shadows cast by the towering trees surrounding him, his eyes could still clearly see the slight flailing of the fawn he just shot before it went completely still. Above him, a flock of crows looked down on the fallen prey with their beady eyes, as if gauging the best time to dive for their feast.
He slowly picked himself up from his hiding spot, a wide oak tree with overarching branches that hid him from sight. He's been crouched there for a good half hour or so, just waiting for the fawn to finally circle the area. He's been observing it for the past week or so, taking note of its routes, and today he decided to make the kill.
Unlike other hunters, Jeno prefers the thrill that comes with stalking his prey over simply making a successful game. For him, the fun of hunting is in the process and not in its ending—a kill , after all, means nothing if you didn't work hard for it.
He looked down on the small fawn now as it lay lifeless on the mossy forest ground with its glassy eyes still open. Leaning over, he lightly pressed his hand over it to feel its heartbeat just to check if he killed it properly.
It was so beautiful and graceful just prancing in the forest a few days ago….it would be a shame if it suffers now.
"Hey, you got it?" A voice from the edge of the clearing made him look around. Haechan emerged from between the trees, his own hunting rifle slung over his shoulder.
"Yup. What did you get?"
The other boy lifted a brown sack and gave it a light shake.
"Got three rabbits. I'm too lazy to skin them here so I'll just ask Taeyong-hyung to do it. Want to go back now?"
Jeno turned to look back at the fawn in front of him briefly before finally shaking his head. He didn't really want to go back to the mansion yet, so he decided to just throw an excuse to the other for now.
"You go ahead. I'll just skin it right here," he said casually over his shoulder at his brother. Haechan, too cold and too bored to stay another minute in the humid woods, gave a wave of his hand before turning back. Unlike Jeno, he prefers the comforts and luxuries of the manor over anything else.
"I'll go ahead then. Try to get back before nightfall, the forest can be a dangerous place~" he said in a sing-song voice, knowing full well it was a useless warning he just gave.
Jeno simply ignored him and silently pulled his skinning knife from his belt so he could get to work. Nights in the forest have never scared him, he knew it like the back of his hand.
If anything, it is the creatures there who should be terrified of him.
------
You glanced over at Jisung and Chenle who were currently immersed in their readings over the page you’ve been scanning. The sun is about to set in just a few minutes and you have the last session of the day scheduled for the pair before you could pack up and go home. Your lips slightly quirked into a smile as you watched Jisung lean over slightly into the other to silently ask about something, Chenle looking up from his pages to roll his eyes before patiently answering. The two have such different personalities from each other, which adorably and ironically, makes them work so well together.
If you're going to be honest with yourself now, you'd say it is your time with the two youngest that you enjoy the most as Rosewood's tutor. Chenle and Jisung were withdrawn and shy at first, but the pair slowly started warming up to you as time went by. Maybe it's because they are younger, but you prefer the innocent air around them every time you would have your lessons. Chenle is the chattier and the more confident of the two, but with his help, even the shy Jisung also started lightly joking around with you on his best days.
That's not to say that you hate your time with the rest of the brothers. You've only ever had one session with Mark—which went so well as expected from the eldest—while the rest have always been polite and casual. There isn’t really anything about your job and connection with any of the boys that should put you on edge and yet... you have to admit that there are still those rare moments when you just feel as if something is out of place. You couldn't really place your finger on it, nor have you blatantly caught anything suspicious, but sometimes you just feel odd whenever you are around any of the four middle children. It’s something similar to being watched...like there is an imaginary pair of eyes always pinned to the back of your head, or the ghost feeling of hands hovering around your throat.
Your eyes flickered now to the grand clock on the far side of the room which finally struck five. Closing your own book which you have been scouring over, you called out towards the two who quickly looked up from their work.
"Alright, time's up. Have you answered the first two questions at least?" You asked with a smile. Chenle groaned and pointed at Jisung accusingly.
"I only got three questions because he kept disturbing me, noona."
Jisung frowned and you had to keep your laugh back with how offended he looked.
"Hey, I wasn't disturbing you. I was just asking questions."
"Okay, okay. Don't fight now. Do you want an extension for the chapter quiz? We do have our next lesson the day after tomorrow."
Their faces simultaneously lit up.
"Can we do that?" Chenle asked.
"Yes, but I'll have to leave you the assignment of reading another chapter and finishing the questionnaire for that as well. That'll be your homework, okay?" You tried your best to put on your best impression of a stern look, which only made the two giggle.
"Okay, noona."
"You promise you'll do it?"
Jisung put up his right hand and placed his left one over his heart.
"We promise."
That made you chuckle. "Well then, that will be all for today. I'll see you again tomorrow, okay? I'll have lessons with your brothers but just come to me if you have any questions." You gathered the rest of the papers that you have sprawled on the desk you were using before waving the two goodbye.
You were in the middle of trying to fit in a rather stubborn pile of files on your bag that you didn't really notice the tall figure that entered from the front door. When you finally looked up, it was already too late for you to stop crashing straight first into someone's chest, if not for the strong hands that held you steady. You felt an arm settle on your waist, and another on your back as you almost toppled when you hastily stepped back.
"Oh! I am so sorr—" you looked up with wide eyes to see Jeno looking down on you. Your words died in your throat when your eyes caught the red stain on his neck and you gasped.
"Jeno, what happened?!" Your voice raised in panic as you stared wide eyed at the blood running down the side of his neck. He gave you a slight look of confusion before raising a hand to touch the area you've been staring at.
"Ah… this…"
You didn't wait for him to finish. Quickly, you grabbed his hand and turned on your heels to drag him to the opposite direction. You didn't look back to see his surprised expression, and before he could even say anything, you had already pushed him into one of the expansive bathrooms down the nearest hallway.
"Sit there."
You pushed him urgently on the closed toilet seat before you proceeded to rummage on the hidden compartment behind the mirror that Taeyong showed you before. You quickly grabbed the box of first aid kit there and hastily opened an antiseptic wipe.
"Uhm...noona…"
You didn't pay him any attention, too focused on what you needed to do. You quickly kneeled in front of him so that you were more eye-level with each other before finally pressing the damp wipe against his injury.
"Shh. This might sting a little. We have to see how deep your wound is and stop the bleeding," you said, a small frown creasing your brows as your fingers gently dabbed at his skin. You were so focused on what you were doing that you didn't notice the light in his eyes shift as he looked at you closely.
His gaze dropped to your slightly parted lips, then at the look of concentration on your features.
Are you...worried about him?
Your frown deepened as you finally managed to wipe most of the blood away from his skin. The antiseptic sheet you were using has already turned dark red from the liquid, but still you haven't—
"It's not my blood," Jeno said plainly, his voice suddenly sounding too close to you. You looked up to him in confusion, and for the first time you realized how close the two of you were. His gaze didn't waver from your face, pinning you into the spot where you are kneeling in front of him.
"Not your…"
"I was hunting. I was skinning the game I caught but my hand slipped and I hit a major vein. This is deer blood."
If your face wasn't burning after realizing how close the two of you were at the moment, it is definitely on fire now. You opened your mouth to say something, then closed it again in embarrassment. Jeno continued staring at you and you watched as his lips ever so slightly curled into a smirk.
That made you suddenly stand up from your crouch. He calmly followed you with his gaze, a mix of curiosity and amusement in his brown eyes.
"I-I'm so sorry. I thought you were injured so I panicked," you stuttered as your eyes fell on the bloody wipe that is still on your hands. You quickly ducked to throw it away just so you could avoid his gaze.
Jeno followed your every move closely before slightly leaning his head to the side. He seems to be mulling over something, face now devoid of any telling emotions.
"Were you concerned about me?" He asked, tone curious. You glanced at him in surprise, stunned that he would ask such a question. It was bad enough that you stumbled over your words when you finally managed a reply.
"Of course I was concerned. Anyone would be."
Jeno slowly stood up from where he sat and for the first time, you realized just how much he towered over you. It didn't help that the two of you were in a much smaller space than usual which sent a wave of claustrophobia to wash you over briefly. You involuntarily took a step back, eyes only high enough to meet the base of his neck.
"Why though?" He asked again, and you could genuinely hear the curiosity in his tone. You frowned. He was asking...as if he isn't used to such a level of care. As if things like this are so foreign to him.
"Because you are my student. And I wouldn't want to see anyone hurt."
For a moment, Jeno didn't say anything else. He simply looked at you while you tried so hard not to flinch under his heavy gaze.
Then, as if a switch had been turned, he took a step to the side to free some space between the two of you. Your eyes shot to his face when he did that, and you were met by his boyish smile that crinkled his eyes into half moons.
That made you blink. You see it on him whenever he is with the rest of his brothers, but it was the first time he ever smiled that way to you.
"Thank you, noona. I appreciate it."
It was as if a blockage in your throat dissolved all of a sudden. You smiled back, a sense of relief overtaking you.
"Don't worry about it. I'm sorry I panicked, too."
"It's cute. Nobody has ever…" he trailed off before shrugging. "I guess, it's because we're all men here. So none of us are used to that kind of care."
You nodded slowly at that. It really must be hard...being in this kind of household. Now that you think about it, the boys are technically orphans.
"Anyway, I have to go. I need to get back before dark. I'm not really a big fan of night drives," you said as you picked up the bag you had haphazardly thrown into the sink in your panic earlier. Jeno simply watched you silently from where he stood.
"Make sure to be careful next time alright? Don't give anyone a heart attack again," you smiled before finally excusing yourself out. He smiled back and gave a nod of goodbye as you closed the door.
Jeno turned to the mirror in front of him and slowly touched the part of his neck where your fingers grazed earlier. It was cold now from the antiseptic you had rubbed, but he could still remember how good the warmth of your touch felt against his skin when you were trying to wash the blood away. He curled his fingers slightly over the area now, leaving half moon marks as his nails dug there.
Oh what he would do to have you touch him again.
-------
"Pretty neat, huh?" You grinned at Jaehyun as he parked the car in front of the manor. You watched as your boyfriend's eyes moved over the impressive facade of the structure in front of him, knowing full well that his architect training is kicking in.
"Not bad. Victorian-era, probably. The stones look old but the place looks pretty well-kept…"
You grinned to yourself now as you leaned back on your seat. Of course you have absolutely no reason to be proud of something you don't own, but you can't help but boast a little at your boyfriend. It is your workplace after all.
Jaehyun turned to his seat now to give you a slightly guilty smile. He sighed before reaching out for your hand.
"Are you sure you will be okay though? I'm sorry about borrowing your car all of a sudden, the timing is just so bad."
You gave his hand a squeeze before patting it with your other. He was supposed to go on a three day business trip away from the city when his car, all of a sudden, just wouldn't start this morning. He wouldn't make it if he waits for the shop to fix it so the both of you decided to just have him use yours for now. At least he has enough time to drive you to work, which is why the two of you now are parked outside the manor, 10 minutes before your first lesson has to start.
"Don't worry about it. I'll make sure to pick up your car later. I'll have the taxi drive me there."
Jaehyun glanced back at the mansion briefly.
"Are you sure you can get a taxi here though? This is pretty far off the main road…"
Well...to be honest, you weren't even really sure about that yourself but he didn't have to worry about it right now. You nodded and reached over for your bag with a smile.
"Yes. Or I'll just ask Taeyong for help if I can't get one. I'm pretty sure they have some taxi companies in contact."
Jaehyun still didn't look convinced but gave you a small nod nevertheless. His eyes were back to studying the house again which made you chuckle.
"Jae, I'll be fine. You have to go now or you'll be late to your conference. Thanks for driving me here," picking up the last of your things, you leaned over to give him a quick peck on the cheeks. He responded by pulling you over for a slightly longer kiss when you tried to move away.
"Yah, Jung Jaehyun. We'll both be late if you don't stop," you whispered softly with an amused tone. He laughed before finally letting you pull back.
"Just getting my fill of it since I won't see you in three days. Call me once you get home later, okay?"
"Mmn. Take care, too. Go get that deal closed," you gave him a wink before finally opening the passenger seat. You watched as he finally pulled away from the driveway and waited until he disappeared again on the long winding road before turning towards the manor again. You were almost at the front steps when the doors finally opened, spilling Haechan, Renjun, and Jaemin out of them. You frowned slightly as you took notice of the canvases they were carrying as you approached the group.
"Hey...are you going somewhere? Class is about to start." You asked curiously, eyes landing finally on the small leather bag that Renjun was carrying. It seems to be full of art supplies.
"We're doing a free art class today, right noona?" The eldest of the trio asked. You nodded, still a bit confused.
"Renjun suggested we do it in the garden since the weather is nice today," Jaemin finally said. "We think it'll be a nice change from the stuffy rooms inside," he slightly jerked his head back at the wide windows of the manor which are currently shut back with thick curtains. You glanced at them briefly too before nodding slowly in understanding.
"Oh… I mean… It's not a bad idea. We can have the first session outside while the sun is still bearable, I guess."
That made Jaemin, and most especially Renjun smile. The boy can be withdrawn most of the time, but you did notice that he looks happiest whenever you do creative classes.
"Thank you, noona."
"No problem. I'll just put my bag inside and then I'll follow you. Why don't you set up your things first?"
You've taken a couple of steps towards the front door already when Haechan suddenly spoke up.
"Who was with you, noona?"
That froze you on your tracks. Slowly, you turned to face the trio again. They saw Jaehyun drive off?
"Oh, that was my boyfriend. He dropped me off today," you said casually with a smile. Haechan leaned his head a little bit to the side in curiosity.
"But he took your car…"
"Yes, he did. His broke down so he had to borrow mine. He's leaving for a three-day trip so—" you stopped all of a sudden, realizing that you're explaining things too much. There's nothing wrong about what you said but there was still a part of you that made you feel a little...exposed. Jaemin, Haechan, and Renjun, fortunately, didn't seem to notice and continued to politely look at you.
"Anyway, I'll just grab a cab to go home," you continued with a smile. "There are some who stop by here, right?"
"Yes. Or we can just ask Taeyong-hyung to drive you. He is the only one who has a license among us," Jaemin offered with a casual shrug.
"Ah, maybe I'll have to bother him this one time if I can't get a cab," you said with a sheepish smile. "Okay, I do have to bring my things inside. I'll see you."
You have already reached the top of the steps before the double doors when you finally realized something. Quickly you turned to the three boys who were just about to disappear to the side of the house leading to the manicured gardens.
"Wait, where's Jeno?"
It was Jaemin who answered.
"Oh yeah. He can't come. He is on bed rest."
You frowned.
"What happened?"
Haechan snickered which caused Renjun to shoot him a reprimanding look.
"He got into a hunting accident," the boy explained as he barely tried to keep his lips from twitching with amusement. "He was foolish enough to get stabbed in the chest by a stag."
-----
You gave the oak wood door a few light taps before drawing your hand back to yourself. You still weren't sure if this is a good idea, and yet here you are standing outside Jeno's room, the expansive hallway making you feel too small and out of place. This is the first time you've been in this part of the mansion since you only ever roamed the lower floors for your classes, and you couldn't help but feel a little strange at the heaviness of the air clinging around you now.
Maybe it's because it is where the private quarters of the boys are, but the corridor was only slightly illuminated by dimmed lighting from the lamps on the walls. Everything was silent, and for a moment you wondered if you got the wrong door that Taeyong gave directions to when you told him you wanted to check on Jeno. You have already taken a step back and was about to turn away when you heard some rustling from inside the room. It was followed by a voice muffled by the thick wood separating you from the other side of the door.
"Come in."
You froze on your spot for a few seconds before finally managing to shake yourself to open the door before you slowly. Peering around it, the first thing you noticed was how big the room was—it looked more like a smaller section of a house than a private quarters. It was dark, but a quick look at it told you that it was mostly bare if you don't count the essentials, which is a simple desk by the side, a long couch, and, in the middle, a four poster bed.
Your eyes landed on Jeno who was looking at you with equal mild surprise. He was propped against the headboard of his bed, the light from the laptop on his lap illuminating his face. You noticed that he didn't have a shirt on, but most of his skin from the right shoulder down to his chest was covered by bandages.
"Hi," you smiled, suddenly feeling conscious now as you stepped into his room.
"Um. Hi. What are you…"
"I heard that you were injured so I just dropped by to check on you," you quickly answered to diffuse any awkwardness that is in danger of settling between the two of you. Jeno blinked, as if processing what you just said.
"Uh… sorry, I didn't realize that I might be disturbing you. I can also just go back another time and—"
"No," He said all of a sudden before you could excuse yourself. Quickly, he closed his laptop and put it away on his side. "You can stay for a bit."
"Oh...great. I uh…" your eyes roamed around his room once again, hoping to find a chair that is closer to his bed. There was none. You figured the couch was the only place you could go to so you started walking towards it, Jeno's eyes on you.
"You can sit here," he suddenly said and you looked up to see him pointing at the foot of his bed. That made you stop before glancing again at the couch at the farther side of his room, something which he immediately noticed.
"It's too far away. It'll be awkward for us to talk if you sit there,” he said, as if he read your mind.
That...makes sense. With a slight nod, you closed the distance between you and the bed instead and chose to sit by its far end.
Jeno was back to watching you as you settled down, his expression curious. You softly cleared your throat.
"How are you feeling?"
He glanced down his chest briefly. "Oh, I'm fine. It didn't hurt as much during the weekend, but I was still told to stay in bed. I can't really move that much yet."
"What happened anyway?"
He scratched the back of his head almost sheepishly and looked away.
"I was trying to hunt a deer. I didn't know its mate was just around the area when I approached it so...yeah."
You winced as your eyes fell on his bandaged chest. You know next to nothing about hunting, but you know enough that an angry stag doesn't spell good news for anyone. Things could have been more serious for him.
"Are you sure that you shouldn't be in the hospital though?"
"Yes. We have a private doctor anyway. I just need to make sure I don't move too much to keep my wound from opening. And I also hate hospitals so I prefer to stay here…"
"You have to be more careful next time, okay Jeno? The forest is such a dangerous place…" you sighed before shifting your attention towards the window at the far wall of his room. He only had his curtains partially open but you could still see a sliver of the woods from where you sat.
Something about what you said shifted something in him. You missed it entirely thanks to the shadows from the room's dim lighting that masked his features, but it was there, hiding in plain sight.
"You take care of us so well."
You turned to him again as you heard him whisper something.
"What?"
Jeno simply smiled. He leaned back against the headboard, as if mulling over something.
"Since noona is worried about me, can you help me change my bandages?"
You blinked. That wasn't something you expected him to ask at all. Before, you figured Jeno to be one of the more withdrawn among the brothers, always with this air of intimidation about him, but lately, he has been throwing you off with these kinds of moments. He isn't flirty like Jaemin or sly and playful like Haechan, but he’s just so...direct. Almost pushy, sometimes.
"I uhm… I don't know. I wouldn't know how to do it, maybe I can call someone and—"
You watched as he already started to undo the bandages on his torso, your eyes growing wide as he started to expose more skin.
"Jeno wait, I think we should call Taeyong for thi—oh my god."
Your words were cut off when he finally let the last of the bandages fall to reveal the cut on his torso. It started from his right chest, a few inches above the collarbone, and ran sideways to the middle where it cut off. Stitches held the skin together, and you could see the darkening sides of the flesh where it broke.
Yet it wasn't only that which caught your attention. Despite the dimness of the room, you could see other marks in his body, old scars that adorned his pale skin here and there. They varied in length and thickness, and you couldn't figure out what might have caused them. Were they from hunting accidents too…?
You immediately turned to look away. You didn't want to seem rude for staring. Jeno, however, seemed unbothered, if not mildly amused. Watching you through hooded eyes, he let you squirm for a little bit first before finally calling for your attention once more.
"Noona."
"Yes?"
"Help me, please?"
The tone he used on you finally made you turn with a slight wince, which only made him chuckle.
"You're not used to seeing injuries?"
"I'm not fond of them. I don't think anyone is."
“So let's get this over with then. I just need you to hold one side of the bandage for me while I wrap it again. It's hard when I do it alone."
You were about to open your mouth to say something again but chose to purse your lips after in the end. With a soft sigh, you finally picked yourself up from your spot by the foot of the bed to move closer to him. Jeno had already uncapped what looked to be a bottle of antiseptic at this point and had started to dab gently at his cut. You tried to watch without wincing too much as he tried to do the job, but it was probably too painful for him to move too much because he was missing a lot of it.
"Hey, just give me that. I'll do it," you asked as you gently took the cotton pad from him. Jeno wordlessly let you take it, eyes closely watching you as you ducked a little to clean his wound. You tried your best to keep your eyes on target, not allowing them to move anywhere else…
"It looks so bad… I'm surprised you can still move…" you whispered, more to yourself than to him as you frowned over it. You completely missed the way the corners of Jeno's lips ever so slightly tilted as your fingers brushed against his skin.
"Your fiance must have never gotten injured before, noona."
Your hand froze at what he said. Slowly, you looked up at him, only to see him smile at you.
"How did you…"
"Oh, Taeyong-hyung told us. He just reminded us to be nice to you or else you might quit. He said you are saving up for your wedding."
You didn't say anything at first after his explanation. There's nothing wrong about it, and it seems very in-character for Taeyong to say that since he seems to be the most worried about the possibility of you quitting. Still, you couldn't help the odd feeling that tugged at your chest, one you tried to shove back as you turned your attention again to what you were doing just so you could escape Jeno's gaze.
"Well… yes. I am saving up for it. But I also enjoy my time here… so far…"
Jeno smiled to himself as he looked down on you, eyes watching your every move.
"We'll behave too, we promise," he said softly that you almost didn't catch it.
"Until then, I'm sure your boyfriend wouldn't mind us borrowing you from him."
----
"Jisung! Chenle! Don't run too far into the forest, okay?" Taeyong called out to the two boys who have already turned on their tails and have started running towards the woods. You watched as the two laughed and pushed at each other playfully before finally disappearing into the forest edge.
Taeyong sighed beside you and let the hands he had on his hips fall to his sides. You turned to him and he gave you an apologetic smile.
"I'm sorry for suddenly asking you to watch over them. I totally forgot that I had to drive the rest to their dentist appointment today," he said with a scratch of his head. You simply shook a hand at him to wave him off.
"Don't worry about it. I don't have any other classes today anyway so I'll just wait here for them. But... uh... are you sure that it is safe for them to play there?"
"Yes. As long as they stay in the right zones. There are parts there where some wild animals might roam around this season but Jisung and Chenle already know that, don't worry. It won't be the first time they'll be going there too. They've been playing there since they were kids."
You nodded slowly, still a little bit unsure as your gaze floated over to the woods once more. If it were you, you wouldn't let them go near it, especially after what happened to Jeno.
"I'll have to go then. I promise I'll be back by 5. Then I can drive you back to town after."
You turned to look at Taeyong once more and gave him a grateful smile. You usually would have declined the offer under normal circumstances, but you honestly think it will be easier and safer for you to just have him take you back later.
"Thank you. I appreciate that."
The other nodded before giving you one last smile. Turning around, you watched him go to the car where Haechan, Renjun, and Jaemin were already waiting. Jeno was still in bed rest, so he is skipping the impromptu trip this time.
You only turned back to look at the woods ahead when you finally saw the black sedan disappear down the road. The forest looked foreboding in front of you, one look at it and you know there is no way you'll venture there in your own free will. With a sigh, you picked up the book you've brought with you and let yourself take a seat by the grass as you wait for Jisung and Chenle to return.
A sudden sharp caw that tore the air made you look up in surprise from the current chapter you were reading. You didn't have any idea how much time had already passed after you lost yourself in your book, but you were surprised to see that the sky had gone red over the horizon as a flock of crows soared from the depths of the forest. You watched as they circled just above the trees before finally disappearing far into the sky. That was when you realized it; it's been a while since Jisung and Chenle left.
With panic slowly creeping into your chest, you glanced at your watch then back at the mansion behind you. Taeyong didn't say anything about a curfew for the two kids, but your own sense told you that the pair should be back before night falls. Your gut told you that you should start looking for them, but the problem is that there is still more than half an hour left before Taeyong said they will return and the only other person left in the manor was Jeno—who can't even get out of bed.
You swallowed. Before you could make any decision, however, a bone-chilling sound floated into the air that made your blood turn cold. It was faint at first, making you wonder if it was just your imagination playing tricks on you, but then it called out again, and you felt your heart drop to your stomach.
It was Chenle. Screaming.
You broke into a run without a second thought.
It took you everything you have not to topple over the uneven forest floor as you wove through the trees. You have no idea where you were going, your mind and vision reeling as you tried to follow the voice. Your skirt have caught countless times on shrubberies and wayward tree barks as you tore through the woods but you kept going, not minding the tears on the fabric and the skin of your legs.
"Chenle! Jisung! Where are you!"
You called out desperately when the cries suddenly stopped. You were only barely aware of your heart thundering in your chest and your lungs burning from overexertion.
No. No. Don't stop screaming. I can't find you if you do.
"Chenle! Jisung!" You called out again desperately as you stopped at the edge of what seemed to be a small patch of land that dropped off to a ravine. The trees beyond were denser than the ones at the edge of the forest and the already fading light of the day wasn't helping the thick canopies above you that rained shadows on where you stood. You looked around and swallowed thickly. Something inside of you told you to turn around and run again but you stayed frozen on your spot, waiting for any sound from the kids.
It took you a few more heartbeats to pick up something again. Jisung's voice sounded far off to your right, maybe about 15 meters from where you currently are.
"Noona! Help! Chenle fell down!"
Your adrenaline jumped into action again.
"Jisung?! Jisung! Wait—Is Chenle with you?” A soft voice called out and you breathed in as you recognized the latter's tone. “I'm coming! Don't stop calling for me, okay, so I can find you!"
You were about to turn away from the edge of the steep ravine you were still standing on when you felt your back hit something hard. Before you could even turn around to look at it, however, a blunt force hitting the middle of your shoulder blades sent you toppling forward, straight into the sharp fall beyond.
You screamed, before everything went quiet as your head hit the bedrock below.

♡ why did you need to need to practise in the bedroom?? in his bedroom, no less
♡ your show was quickly approaching and you recalled the scene where you were to burst out into tears on stage, and you hadn’t yet rehearsed how you were going to do that
♡ honestly, you were under the assumtion that yaku would have no problem with you practising while in his bedroom bc he has ran lines with you in the past and this was hardly any different
♡ so sat, thinking about the most horrible, morbid, grotesque things you possible could, all while keeping your eyes wide open and not blinking so soon enough, the tears started rolling
♡ proud of yourself, you smirked before burying your face into your hands; now to add sobs!
♡ it started out with mere snivels but then as you got more confident, it built up to full on bawls which were loud enough to gain yaku’s attention from the kitchen
♡ he was quick to rush over to his bedroom, his soul audibly leaving his body when he saw your upset weeping figure on the bed
♡ he basically pounced on you and engulfed you with his embrace, ‘dear! what’s wrong? are you alright? who hurt you?!’ the questions were fast falling off his tongue as cradled your head, leaving no room for you to speak without being muffled by his chest or arms
♡ and when he noticed that you were trying to speak, he simply hushed you, ‘shh! it’s okay, dearest.’ and continued to whisper ‘comforting’ stuff like that in your ear
♡ he thought he was helping but really he was just preventing you from getting you point across
♡ eventually, you managed to escape his steel grip and gasp, ‘yaku! i’m fine! look — no tears!” you gestured to you damp cheek, “i was just practising for my role! i’m not actually sad. though, it’s cute that you care so mu--”
♡ as soon as yaku heard the word ‘practising’ he immediately recalled how you mention you have a sad scene where you need to cry and his natural reflex was to lean backwards, grab a massive teddy bear that sat behind him which he had won at a carnival for you but you insisted that he keep it bc you didn’t want to carry it home
♡ ...and he threw it straight at you, causing you to fall backwards and burst out laughing at how you were currently being straddled by a big teddy bear
♡ ‘(y/n)! i thought you were hurt! you can’t just fake cry without telling me first- i was so worried! like i thought it was real and--’ this went on for an elongated amount of time, yaku ranting while you added a faint ‘sorry!’ whenever you saw the opportunity
♡ eventually, he stopped only to take a deep breath, visibly calming doing as his chest heaved, ‘alright. what’s done is done; it’s fine. you worried me though, (y/n). i thought you were being for real, what then?’
♡ you nodded, smiling at his softened expression as your lips twisted into a smirk at his final comment. cocking a brow, you purred, ‘so...you think i’m a good actor? tha--’
♡ pow! another plushie to the face! K.O!

♡ as a joke, you dabbed water under your eyes a few times so you could send your friend a snap of you ‘crying’ and ofc kenma had to walk in at exactly the wrong time
♡ you were over at his house, chilling on his couch while he was upstairs talking to kuroo over the phone— he said he’d only be a moment but almost half an hour had passed and he still showed no sign of coming back downstairs, though you couldn’t blame him as kuroo does have a tendency to be overly descriptive when spilling tea
♡ anyway, as soon as you had sent your snap, you placed your phone down and scanned the room in search of some tissues to wipe you eyes with, when kenma barged in
♡ ‘hey, (y/n). i’m sorry that took so lo--’ when his gaze shifted from his phone onto you, sitting on the couch with tears streaming down your cheeks, he immediately cut himself off
♡ at first, you were frozen, simply staring at each other; as if he had just walked in on you committing a violent act of homicide in his living room
♡ honestly you were too stunned to move at first but if you could, you’d probably say something along the lines of ‘this isn’t what it looks like’ but before you could even open your mouth, kenma edged towards you until he was able to outstretch his arms and wrap you in his warm embrace
♡ with your cheek pressed against his warm hoodie, basking in an uncommon blissful silence, you postponed your explanation until you were finished enjoyed how his nimble fingers caressed your back
♡ you hummed, your lips curling a smile at how comfortable you felt in his arms and how nice his hoodie smelt, since it usually reeked of an unholy mixture of body spray and monster energy
♡ he planted a kiss upon your head, murmuring into your hair, ‘baby, what’s wrong?’
♡ you were quick to swipe away your ‘tears’ with the back of your hand, ‘i’m fine, don’t worry.” you chirped, beaming at him to reinforce this point, ‘it’s just water, for a silly video i sent to my friends.’
♡ kenma blinked rapidly, staring down at your seemingly genuine smile
♡ honestly, you expected him to tease you or be irritated that you made him reveal a hidden soft side of himself for no reason, since he’s usually quite private with his emotions
♡ but instead, the corners of his lips just lifted into a slight smile as pushed your head back against his chest, then resting his head upon yours, ‘oh, that’s cool.’ he breathed, his warm, calming voice causing your eyelids to become heavy — that and the fact you had went on a run not too long ago
♡ kenma felt your eyes flutter shut against his chest so he slowly leaned backwards, holding you against his hoodie as he laid down, allowing himself to doze off with you snuggled up on his heaving torso

hajime iwaizumi
♡ you were making iwaizumi dinner, cutting onions and cooking curry
♡ so it was not surprising when tears started brimmed at your eyes, eventually slipping from your lashline and trickling down the soft skin of your cheeks, leaving you to blink rapidly to lubricate your burning eyes
♡ iwaizumi had just came out the shower, he had dried off but when he came downstairs and peered into the kitchen, he was wearing just a towel which was draped around his hips, ‘mm, something smells good. whatcha cookin’, baby?’
♡ he didn’t plan on staying downstairs for long, which is why he didn’t throw on a shirt; all he wanted to do was get to the bottom of what that magnificent aroma was that he smelled from upstairs, then once he figured it out, he’d go back upstairs, get changed, then head back down for dinner
♡ but his plan was cut short when he noticed crystalline tears pouring from your red, puffy eyes
♡ without thinking or taking into consideration why your eyes are red, his immediate reaction was to dash over to your side and slip his arms around your waist, puling you in so that one of your hands had no choice but to rest on his back while the other continued to stir the pot
♡ noticing that your watery eyes were still fixated on the curry, he took your chin inbtween his fingers and forced you to cook at him, ‘why’s my angel crying? hm?’ he cooed, features painted with genuine worry and concern
♡ you lifted a brow, stifling a chuckle at how silly he was being, ‘what do you mean?’
♡ before you could process anything else, iwaizumi bought you in for a passionate kiss with the his hand pressing against the small of your back, only pulling away so he could rest his head on your shoulder and hum into your ear, ‘you can tell me anything, angel, so what’s on your mind?’
♡ you bottom lip quivered at his intimate action — you might just start crying for real
♡ biting your bottom lip, you resisted your tears and forced out a laugh, ‘what’s on my mind? well,’ you started, momentarily letting go of the ladle so you could hug back, ‘i have to make dinner for my himbo husband, but the onions and spices are burning my eyes. pray for me, iwa.’
♡ it took him a moment to register what you just said. he’d been in the kitchen many times so by now he was basically immune to the way onions and spices affect the eyes, so he completely forgot that stuff like that happens. he honestly, wholeheartedly thought that you were crying real tears of sadness while making dinner
♡ he impulsively pushed you away, crossing his arms over his chest and his initial kind expression lowering into a scowl, ‘who are you calling a himbo?! i just forgot that some people have weak-ass eyes. bye.’ he spat, clearly trying his best not to laugh as he stormed off to his room, keeping a firm grip on his towel the whole time
♡ don’t worry, though. he was back ten minutes later — fully clothed — to eat dinner with you :))
♡ but don’t mention it ever again or else he’ll blush and tell you it ever happened
Tumblr media Tumblr media
tobio kageyama
♡ you were scrolling on your fyp and found a video of a person explaining how to cry on command and you didn’t believe it’d actually work so you tried it
♡ as it turns out, it does work and now you are sitting on your bed with tear stained cheeks and a dry throat, completely zoned out until kageyama came marching into your bedroom
♡ it was in that moment that you recalled that you had invited him over for a movie night and you had left your front door unlocked for him, hence he must’ve invited himself in
♡ ‘sorry i’m late, but i brought doritos.’ he spun on heels after closing the door, doritos in hand but not for long because as soon as he noticed your cheek glistening the lamplight, he instantly dropped them to rush over to you
♡ ‘eh? (y/n)? are you crying?’ he asked with a harsh voice, which wouldn’t help if you really were crying. instinctively, he reached out for your hand and began pressing kisses to the back of it
♡ he wasn’t really too sure on what exactly he could do or say to comfort you, so he recollected on the time you tried to cheer him up after he lost a big game. you lay beside him on his bed, humming a distant tune that matched the one playing in his ear from his earbuds. one hand threading through his hair while the other cupped his cheek so you could press occasional, soft kisses on his cheek while he set to himself. it was calming, and it definitely worked in making him feel better. usually, it’d take him months to recover after a devastating loss like that, but with you by his side and giving him support, he was back to his normal self in a couple weeks
♡ well, as normal as it gets for kageyama
♡ you gently shook your head, admiring his adorable actions and allowing his to continue as you used your spare hand to wipe away your artificial tears
♡ ‘oh, sweetie, i love you so much.’ you mused, thinking up a way to start your story without sounding foolish
♡ but perhaps you shouldn’t have began your explanation with a term of endearment as his impulse with to promptly throw his arms around you, holding onto your torso tightly
♡ you were taken back for moment, wheezing slightly as kageyama squeezed the air out of you but finally able to speak once he relaxed his arms, ‘tobio! nothing’s wrong, don’t worry. i was just testing to see if i could fake cry or not. i’m not actually crying.’
♡ kageyama’s eyes widened and he paled
♡ you weren’t actually in need of comfort? then why did he just get all soft? for nothing?
♡ ‘no.’ was his simple response which he punctuated with another kiss on the back of your hand
♡ you couldn’t help but giggle, taking advantage of this opperuntiy to reach out and ruffle his hair, ‘yes. i’m seriously okay. i’m happy, actually, because i get to spend my evening watching movies with you!’
♡ surprisngly, he didn’t glare at you for messing up his hair — since it was already untidy — and just took a seat beside you, keeping ahold of your hand as if it was a fragile gem, ‘i don’t believe you.’
♡ you laughed, realising that he was clearly making excuses for openly showing affection and being soft so you just let him, hopping to your feet and tugging your hand away from him so you could grab the doritos he dropped, ‘whatever you say, tobio.’
♡ he pouted but it was only brief as he was soon able to take your hand once more, ‘yeah..’ he grunted, averting his eyes so you didn’t see the blush creeping onto his cheeks, ‘whatever, just put on the stupid movie...stupid (y/n)...i love you..’

Belated bday fic for bearer of cursed fruit facts @seraphlm and thee plant dad cas truther @cactuscas !! Love u guys v much, happy bday <3 (ao3 link here)
“Fuck’s a horoscope again? It’s like, stars and shit, right?”
He bumps Cas’ elbow, who’s squinting at one of his fern-looking-things like he’s experimenting with horticultural telepathy. The saga of the fern-thing has been turbulent, to say the least. It’s wilting a bit, leaves curling in on themselves like tiny fists. Cas has spent the past few days carting it from one window ledge to another, muttering to himself about humidity levels with a familiar air of irritated devotion. Dean reckons the whole underground bunker situation probably isn’t helping. It’s well travelled, though, for a plant. Dean thinks it should be more grateful.
Cas nods, releasing a leaf with a sigh and sitting down next to Jack. “Indeed. Stars and shit.”
Jack’s engrossed in some magazine, finger tracing the words as he reads. Cas reaches for the edge of the page to hold it taut for him, and Dean can practically see his other hand itching for his phone. Diagnosis time for the fern-thing. Dean’s never seen a favorites bar so wholly taken up by gardening websites. Dean’s pretty sure the definition of true love is pausing Die Hard to read an article about potting soil drainage.
“Do you want to hear yours, Dean? It’s for this week.”
“Sure, kiddo.” To be honest, Dean thinks the concept of fate can very much, actually, go fuck itself. Jack looks delighted though, so he keeps it to himself. He stirs a bit of extra butter into the eggs because that’s the way Jack likes them, dutifully not looking at Cas to avoid a depressing conversation about his cholesterol levels.
“Oh! It says you’re lucky this week, Dean!”
“Awesome, bud! Time to stock up on the scratch cards, eh?”
Sam chooses that moment to come lumbering in. The state of his hair suggests a sleepless night, or that a recent localized hurricane that targeted his bedroom only.
“Hi Sam! We’re reading horoscopes. Dean’s an Aquarius.”
“Oh, cool.” Eileen had been delayed on a salt and burn with some of the new-hunter-network people. Sam looks suitably mopey about it, forlorn housewife that he is. “Mercury’s in marmalade, and all that.”
“Aquarius is ruled by Uranus,” Jack continues, and Sam instantly chokes. On air, apparently. Bastard.
“One more time, Jack? Dean’s ruled by his –”
“You’re a child, Samantha.” Dean looks around for the nearest something-painful-not-fatal to throw at him. Plant’s a no. Instant divorce. He glances at the eggs, but decides he doesn’t want to spend his morning getting egg yolk outta the tile grouting.
“Dude, oh my – I should’ve just checked your horoscope,” Sam walks over to the fridge, catching the Mary Berry’s Baking Bible that Jody sent them for Christmas in mid-air. “Would’ve saved us a talk.”
“Eat your pineapple and shut up, man.”
“Did you know that pineapples are technically berries?” Jack says. Dean wonders if Cas introduced him to WebMD-for-plants. Or maybe this is just a side effect of being The New God on the block. Berry omniscience. “Well. The outside bit is. Bananas are berries too.”
“That’s weird,” Sam closes the fridge door. Stares into his bowl like he’s offended. Dean’s offended Sam eats nothing but fruit in the morning. “After the heaven rebuild. You should, like, fix berries.”
Jack turns to Cas solemnly. “Should I fix berries?”
“Perhaps you should concentrate on heaven, first. Then we can see about berries.”
“I don’t want to ruin the fabric of our established universe,” Jack says, and Dean’s struck, once again, with the sudden realisation that he’s making eggs for the most powerful entity in Creation. Mondays, man.
“I don’t think Chuck had any such purity of intent in mind,” Cas says darkly, pouring more milk into God’s glass for strong bones and teeth, and yeah, Dean’s pretty keen to steer Cas away from that particular line of conversation.
“Hey, what’s Cas’ horo-whatever?” He takes the eggs off the heat and walks over to the table, leaning over to see what the hell magazine this is, actually. Looks Rowena-y. Is the Queen of Hell sending his son-God care packages? That’s one way to establish diplomatic relations.
He rests his hands on Cas’ shoulders, stroking his thumbs at the neckline of his t-shirt when he feels tension. He decides against pressing a kiss to Cas’s hair. Just ‘cause he’s with a dude now, doesn’t mean he’s gonna be all gay about it. Cas’ left hand comes up to cover his own. Their rings clink.
“Cas doesn’t have a birthday, though.” Jack frowns at the page slightly, apparently looking for the section on fallen angel anomalies.
“Then we’ll have to pick one –” Dean starts, just as Cas says, “September eighteenth.”
Cas tips his head back against Dean’s chest, peers up at him. He’s got dried toothpaste at the corner of his mouth. Dean grins stupidly at his upside-down face. “September eighteenth, yeah.” Something swoops in his chest. Cas is earnest, and it’s unbearable. He loves at full volume, and Dean’s as grateful as he is undeserving. He squeezes Cas’ shoulder. Tradition, and all that.
Jack taps the page. “It says you’re a Virgo, Cas!”
They’re still staring at each other as Jack starts reading aloud. Dean brushes hair off Cas’ forehead and thinks, for once, he’s landed himself the permanent kind of happy. Dean’s pretty sure he’s loved him for years and years, quietly, achingly.
There’s the sound of cutlery against ceramic, and Dean looks up to check Sammy’s not weeping into his fruit bowl out of sheer girlish pride or whatever. He’d made it six words into his best man speech before the waterworks. Dean’s never letting him live it down.
“So,” Dean says later, after Sam’s gone to collect Eileen from town, and Jack’s off on heavenly refurb duty. “My lucky week, huh?”
Dean circles his arms round Cas’ midriff. Lets his chin rest on his shoulder, because he can, and also to check Cas isn’t half-assing the washing up.
“Apparently so.”
Dean hums. It’s funny. They’re married. And yet moments like these, the big ones, still manage to make him a bit nervous. It’s stupid. He’s hardly gonna say no. But Dean supposes they’ve never managed to get anything in the right order. Two deathbed confessions amidst a decade of friendship. An ‘I love you too’ echoing off brick in an empty room. Two kids co-parented before they even kissed, and they were already living together when they started dating. Someone get Nicholas Sparks on the phone.
“Perfect week to put an offer down on a house then, right? That one on the lake?”
Cas drops a fork into the bubbles. He turns his head to reply and Dean takes it as an opportunity to kiss what’s within reach. The smile lines around his eye, his temple greying with the proof that Cas loves him. He’s all in. Dean is too, terrifyingly.
“Really?”
“Yeah, dude.” Dean nods at the fern guy. “Your plants would appreciate the sunlight, right? And there’s a room for Jack.”
Cas spins in his arms, leaning against the sink to look Dean in the eye. Dean grabs at his soapy palm, intertwining their fingers, confident in his sappiness when no one’s watching.
“I know I always say Sammy didn’t make the most of his college experience, but dorming in my forties isn’t exactly what I meant –”
“You’ll miss him, though.”
“Of course, man. Lived with Sam my whole life. But,” Dean relinquishes the hand to cup Cas’ face, “I kinda wanna do my own thing now. With you. So, move in with me, Mr. Winchester? Somewhere… overground?”
It’s so off-your-feet sweepingly romantic Dean feels like he deserves a medal. Maybe this is their karmic justice after the proposal debacle.
Cas is smiling at him, soft and sweet. “Okay, Dean.” He puts wet hands around his waist and Dean doesn’t even care that it’s seeping through his t-shirt. “Lake house it is.”
Dean leans in, kisses him three times in response. He lingers on the last one, smiling against Cas’ mouth. Cas knows what he means.

Lines by Leonard Cohen
As someone long prepared for the occasion In full command of every plan you wrecked – Do not choose a coward’s explanation that hides behind the cause and the effect
And it's stronger than drink And it's deeper than sorrow This darkness she's left in my heart.
And I'll dance with you in Vienna I'll be wearing a river's disguise The hyacinth wild on my shoulder, My mouth on the dew of your thighs
He wants to write a love song An anthem of forgiving A manual for living With defeat
The birds they sang At the break of day Start again I heard them say Don't dwell on what Has passed away Or what is yet to be.
You never liked to get The letters that I sent. But now you've got the gist Of what my letters meant. You're reading them again, The ones you didn't burn. You press them to your lips, My pages of concern.
I caught the darkness It was drinking from your cup. I said: Is this contagious? You said: Just drink it up
Everybody talking to their pockets Everybody wants a box of chocolates And a long stem rose Everybody knows
A cross on every hill A star, a minaret So many graves to fill O love, aren't you tired yet?
And everybody knows that the Plague is coming Everybody knows that it's moving fast Everybody knows that the naked man and woman Are just a shining artifact of the past
Yeah I missed you since the place got wrecked By the winds of change and the weeds of sex looks like freedom but it feels like death it's something in between, I guess
I walked into this empty church I had no place else to go When the sweetest voice I ever heard, whispered to my soul
I heard the snake was baffled by his sin He shed his scales to find the snake within But born again is born without a skin The poison enters into everything
And summoned now to deal With your invincible defeat, You live your life as if it’s real, A Thousand Kisses Deep.
I’m slowing down the tune I never liked it fast You want to get there soon I want to get there last
When they said REPENT REPENT I wonder what they meant
Her thighs they slipped away from me Like schools of startled fish Though I've forgotten half my life I still remember this
And if no leaves were on the tree And no water in the sea And the break of day had nothing to reveal That's how broken I would be What my life would seem to me If I didn't have your love to make it real
And yes she lied about it all Her children and her husband You were born to judge the world Forgive me but I wasn't
O troubled dust concealing An undivided love The Heart beneath is teaching To the broken Heart above
The pull of the moon, the thrust of the sun And thus the ocean is crossed The waters are blessed while a shadowy guest Kindles a light for the lost
How come you called me here tonight? How come you bother With my heart at all? You raise me up in grace, Then you put me in a place, Where I must fall.
And everybody knows that it's now or never Everybody knows that it's me or you And everybody knows that you live forever Ah when you've done a line or two
It's coming like the tidal flood beneath the lunar sway, imperial, mysterious, in amorous array:
The lights went out behind us The fireflies undressed The broken sidewalk ended I touched her sleeping breasts They opened to me urgently Likelilies from the dead Behind a fine embroidery Her nipples rose like bread Then I took off my necktie And she took off her dress My belt and pistol set aside We tore away the rest
The Maestro says it's Mozart but it sounds like bubble gum when you're waiting for the miracle, for the miracle to come.
The sea so deep and blind The sun, the wild regret The club, the wheel, the mind, O love, aren't you tired yet?
The wounded forms appear: The loss, the full extent; And simple kindness here, The solitude of strength.
If the sun would lose its light And we lived in an endless night And there was nothing left that you could feel If the sea were sand alone And the flowers made of stone And no one that you hurt could ever heal Well that's how broken I would be What my life would seem to me If I didn't have your love to make it real
But you'll be hearing from me baby, long after I'm gone I'll be speaking to you sweetly From a window in the Tower of Song
I said I’d be your lover. You laughed at what I said. I lost my job forever. I was counted with the dead.
It failed my little fire But it's bright the dying spark Go tell the young messiah What happens to the heart
Good night, good night, my fallen star I guess you're right, you always are I know you're right about the blues You live some life you'd never choose
looks like freedom but it feels like death it's something in between, I guess
I've seen you change the water into wine I've seen you change it back to water, too I sit at your table every night I try but I just don't get high with you
The present's not that pleasant Just a lot of things to do I thought the past would last me But the darkness got that too
The splinters that you carry The cross you left behind Come healing of the body Come healing of the mind
I wish there was a treaty we could sign I do not care who takes this bloody hill I'm angry and I'm tired all the time I wish there was a treaty, I wish there was a treaty Between your love and mine
I’m lacing up my shoe But I don’t want to run I’ll get here when I do Don’t need no starting gun
Thanks For The Dance
Ah, they're dancing in the street — it's Jubilee We sold ourselves for love but now we're free I'm so sorry for that ghost I made you be Only one of us was real and that was me
And I'm still working with the wine, still dancing cheek to cheek, the band is playing Auld Lang Syne, but the heart will not retreat.
And maybe I had miles to drive, And promises to keep: You ditch it all to stay alive, A Thousand Kisses Deep.
Baby don’t ignore me We were smokers we were friends Forget that tired story Of betrayal and revenge
So you can stick your little pins in that voodoo doll I'm very sorry, baby, doesn't look like me at all I'm standing by the window where the light is strong Ah they don't let a woman kill you Not in the Tower of Song
Show me the place, help me roll away the stone Show me the place, I can't move this thing alone Show me the place where the word became a man Show me the place where the suffering began
And you're weak and you're harmless and you're sleeping in your harness and the wind going wild in the trees, and it ain't exactly prison but you'll never be forgiven for whatever you've done with the keys.
Steer your heart past the Truth that you believed in yesterday Such as Fundamental Goodness and the Wisdom of the Way Steer your heart, precious heart, past the women whom you bought Year by year, month by month, day by day Thought by thought
Word of words and measure of all measures Blessed is the name, the name be blessed Written on my heart in burning letters That’s all I know, I cannot read the rest
And O my love, I still recall The pleasures that we knew; The rivers and the waterfall, Wherein I bathed with you.
You said how could this happen You said how can this be The chains are gone from heaven The storms are wild and free
I cried for you this morning And I’ll cry for you again But I’m not in charge of sorrow So please don’t ask me when
Both of us say there are laws to obey But frankly I don’t like your tone You want to change the way I make love I want to leave it alone
Behold the gates of mercy In arbitrary space And none of us deserving The cruelty or the grace
Then I came back from where I’d been. My room, it looked the same – But there was nothing left between The Nameless and the Name.
O longing of the branches To lift the little bud O longing of the arteries To purify the blood
I to my side call the meek and the mild You to your side call the Word By virtue of suffering I claim to have won You claim to have never been heard
I know I said I’d meet you, I’d meet you at the store, But I can’t buy it, baby. I can’t buy it anymore.
I was idle with my soul, when I heard that you could use me I followed very closely, but my life remained the same But then you showed me where you had been wounded In every atom broken is the Name
I fled to the edge of the mighty sea of sorrow Pursued by the riders of a cruel and dark regime But the waters parted and my soul crossed over Out of Egypt, out of Pharaoh’s dream
They whisper still, the injured stones The blunted mountains weep As he died to make men holy Let us die to make things cheap
Sounded like the truth Seemed the better way Sounded like the truth But it's not the truth today
Hurt once and for all into silence. A long pain ending without a song to prove it. Who could stand beside you so close to Eden, When you glinted in every eye the held-high razor, shivering every ram and son?
Sleep baby sleep The day’s on the run The wind in the trees Is talking in tongues
And I loved you when our love was blessed and I love you now there's nothing left
There's silt on your ankles and sand on your feet The river too shallow, the ocean too deep You smile at your suffering, the sweetest reprieve Why did you leave us, why did you leave
I saw some people starving There was murder, there was rape Their villages were burning They were trying to escape I couldn't meet their glances I was staring at my shoes It was acid, it was tragic It was almost like the blues
If you want a partner Take my hand Or if you want to strike me down in anger Here I stand, I'm your man
Ah I don't believe you'd like it, You wouldn't like it here. There ain't no entertainment and the judgements are severe.
The opposites falter, the spirals reverse And Eve must re-enter the sleep of her birth
I don't need to be forgiven for loving you so much It's written in the scriptures It's written there in blood I even heard the angels declare it from above
Sometimes I’d head for the highway I’m old and the mirrors don’t lie But crazy has places to hide in That are deeper than any goodbye
If you want a boxer I will step into the ring for you And if you want a doctor I'll examine every inch of you
Yeah we're drinking and we're dancing but there's nothing really happening and the place is dead as Heaven on a Saturday night And my very close companion gets me fumbling gets me laughing she's a hundred but she's wearing something tight and I lift my glass to the Awful Truth which you can't reveal to the Ears of Youth except to say it isn't worth a dime And the whole damn place goes crazy twice and it's once for the devil and once for Christ but the Boss don't like these dizzy heights we're busted in the blinding lights, busted in the blinding lights of CLOSING TIME
I want him to be certain That he doesn't have a burden That he doesn't need a vision That he only has permission To do my instant bidding which is to Say what I have told him to repeat
Though I take my song From a withered limb, Both song and tree, They sing for him.
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking Everybody knows that the captain lied Everybody got this broken feeling Like their father or their dog just died
Ditched on a beach Where the sea hates to go With a child in my arms And a chill in my soul And my heart the shape Of a begging bowl
And she says, Drink deeply, pilgrim but don't forget there's still a woman beneath this resplendent chemise.
You don't need a lawyer I'm not making a claim You don't need to surrender I'm not taking aim I don't need a lover, no, no The wretched beast is tame I don't need a lover So blow out the flame
O gather up the brokenness And bring it to me now The fragrance of those promises You never dared to vow
And I don’t really know who sent me, To raise my voice and say: May the lights in The Land of Plenty Shine on the truth some day.
There's a bar where the boys have stopped talking They've been sentenced to death by the blues
I know the burden’s heavy As you wheel it through the night Some people say it’s empty But that don’t mean it’s light
Ten New Songs
I better hold my tongue I better take my place Lift this glass of blood Try to say the grace
You came to me this morning and you handled me like meat. You’d have to be a man to know how good that feels, how sweet.
A sip of wine, a cigarette, And then it’s time to go. I tidied up the kitchenette; I tuned the old banjo. I’m wanted at the traffic-jam. They’re saving me a seat. I’m what I am, and what I am, Is back on Boogie Street.
Down in the valley the famine goes on The famine up on the hill I say that you shouldn’t, you couldn’t, you can’t You say that you must and you will
So we struggle and we stagger down the snakes and up the ladder to the tower where the blessed hours chime and I swear it happened just like this: a sigh, a cry, a hungry kiss the Gates of Love they budged an inch I can't say much has happened since
And I'll bury my soul in a scrapbook, With the photographs there, and the moss And I'll yield to the flood of your beauty My cheap violin and my cross
Then she dances so graceful and your heart's hard and hateful and she's naked but that's just a tease. And you turn in disgust from your hatred and from your love and comes to you light as the breeze.
I see the Ghost of Culture With numbers on his wrist Salute some new conclusion Which all of us have missed
I tried to love you my way, But I couldn’t make it hold. So I closed the Book of Longing And I do what I am told.
And up through the system the worlds are withdrawn From every dominion the mind stood upon And now that it's over and now that it's done The name has no number, not even the one
You got me singing Like a prisoner in a jail You got me singing Like my pardon's in the mail
You can add up the parts But you won't have the sum You can strike up the march, There is no drum Every heart, every heart To love will come But like a refugee.
Everybody knows you've been discreet But there were so many people you just had to meet Without your clothes And everybody knows
It's coming from the sorrow in the street, the holy places where the races meet; from the homicidal bitchin' that goes down in every kitchen to determine who will serve and who will eat. From the wells of disappointment where the women kneel to pray for the grace of God in the desert here and the desert far away:
Even though she sleeps upon your satin Even though she wakes you with a kiss Do not say the moment was imagined Do not stoop to strategies like this
I smile when I'm angry I cheat and I lie I do what I have to do To get by But I know what is wrong And I know what is right And I'd die for the truth In My Secret Life
I loved you for your beauty but that doesn't make a fool of me: you were in it for your beauty too and I loved you for your body there's a voice that sounds like God to me declaring, declaring, declaring that your body's really you
O baby I waited so long for your kiss for something to happen, oh something like this.
O let the heavens falter And let the earth proclaim: Come healing of the Altar Come healing of the Name
If you're squeezed for information, that's when you've got to play it dumb: You just say you're out there waiting for the miracle, for the miracle to come.
You put on a uniform To fight the Civil War You looked so good I didn’t care What side you’re fighting for
Did you confuse the Messiah in a mirror and rest because he had finally come? Let me cry Help beside you, Teacher.
It's coming to America first, the cradle of the best and of the worst. It's here they got the range and the machinery for change and it's here they got the spiritual thirst. It's here the family's broken and it's here the lonely say that the heart has got to open in a fundamental way:
I said to Hank Williams: how lonely does it get? Hank Williams hasn't answered yet But I hear him coughing all night long A hundred floors above me In the Tower of Song
Sail on, sail on O mighty Ship of State! To the Shores of Need Past the Reefs of Greed Through the Squalls of Hate Sail on, sail on
Ah the wars they will Be fought again The holy dove She will be caught again Bought and sold And bought again The dove is never free.
I should have seen it coming It was right behind your eyes You were young and it was summer I just had to take a dive Winning you was easy But darkness was the prize
The party’s over But I’ve landed on my feet I’ll be standing on this corner Where there used to be a street
I know you had to lie to me, I know you had to cheat, to pose all hot and high behind the veils of shear deceit, our perfect porn aristocrat so elegant and cheap, I’m old but I’m still into that, A thousand kisses deep.
It’s not a trick, your senses all deceiving A fitful dream, the morning will exhaust – Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving Then say goodbye to Alexandra lost
If you want a lover I'll do anything you ask me to And if you want another kind of love I'll wear a mask for you
It's dark now and it's snowing O my love I must be going, The river has started to freeze. And I'm sick of pretending I'm broken from bending I've lived too long on my knees.
Well I don't know about tomorrow but I know what's coming next I've used up all my questions; I have no answers left
As for the world the job the war I ditched them all to love you more
The story's been written the letter's been sealed You gave me a lily but now it's a field
Your story was so long, The plot was so intense, It took you years to cross The lines of self-defense.
And soon there's sand in every kiss And soon the dawn is ready And soon the night surrenders To a daffodil machete
Waiting for the miracle There's nothing left to do. I haven't been this happy since the end of World War II.
The troubles came I saved what I could save A thread of light, a particle, a wave But there were chains, so I hastened to behave There were chains, so I loved you like a slave
his waltz With its very own breath of brandy and Death Dragging its tail in the sea
They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom For trying to change the system from within I'm coming now, I'm coming to reward them First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
They oughta give my heart a medal For letting go of you When I turned my back on the devil Turned my back on the angel too
Had to go crazy to love you You who were never the one Whom I chased through the souvenir heartache Her braids and her blouse all undone
Well the mouse ate the crumb Then the cat ate the crust Now they’ve fallen in love They’re talking in tongues
There’s other ways to answer That certainly is true Me, I’m blind with death and anger And that’s no place for you
I'm guided by a signal in the heavens I'm guided by this birthmark on my skin I'm guided by the beauty of our weapons
I was fighting with temptation But I didn't want to win A man like me don't like to see Temptation caving in
I know that I’m forgiven, But I don’t know how I know I don’t trust my inner feelings – Inner feelings come and go.
And sometimes when the night is slow, The wretched and the meek, We gather up our hearts and go, A Thousand Kisses Deep.
I dreamed about you, baby. It was just the other night. Most of you was naked Ah but some of you was light.
I don’t know why I come here, knowing as I do, what you really think of me, what I really think of you.
Had to go crazy to love you Had to let everything fall Had to be people I hated Had to be no one at all
I used to love the rainbow And I used to love the view I loved the early morning I'd pretend that it was new But I caught the darkness baby And I got it worse than you
Traveling light It's au revoir My once so bright, my fallen star I'm running late, they'll close the bar I used to play one mean guitar
I dreamed about you baby You were wearing half your dress I know you have to hate me But could you hate me less?
The night of Santiago And I was passing through So I took her to the river As any man would do
Let's keep it on the level When I walked away from you I turned my back on the devil Turned my back on the angel too
I’m turning tricks, I’m getting fixed, I’m back on Boogie Street. You lose your grip, and then you slip Into the Masterpiece.
So we'll go no more a-roving So late into the night, Though the heart be still as loving, And the moon be still as bright. For the sword outwears its sheath, And the soul outwears the breast, And the heart must pause to breathe, And love itself have rest.
You got me singing Even tho' it all looks grim You got me singing The Hallelujah hymn
I'm aching for you baby I can't pretend I'm not I need to see you naked In your body and your thought
If your heart is torn I don’t wonder why If the night is long Here’s my lullaby
I'm sentimental, if you know what I mean I love the country but I can't stand the scene. And I'm neither left or right I'm just staying home tonight, getting lost in that hopeless little screen.
Now in Vienna there's ten pretty women There's a shoulder where Death comes to cry There's a lobby with nine hundred windows There's a tree where the doves go to die There's a piece that was torn from the morning And it hangs in the Gallery of Frost
Oh I want you, I want you, I want you On a chair with a dead magazine In the cave at the tip of the lily In some hallways where love's never been On a bed where the moon has been sweating In a cry filled with footsteps and sand
And everybody knows that you're in trouble Everybody knows what you've been through From the bloody cross on top of Calvary To the beach of Malibu
Ah you drift into my dreams as if you had the right And you show me how you broke me doing all the little things I really like
I gave her something pretty And I waited till she laughed I wasn't born a gypsy To make a woman sad
There is no God in Heaven And there is no Hell below So says the great professor Of all there is to know But I've had the invitation That a sinner can't refuse And it's almost like salvation It's almost like the blues
The war was lost The treaty signed I was not caught I crossed the line, I had to leave My life behind I dug some graves You'll never findI was not caught Though many tried I live among you Well disguised
Now I'm living in this temple Where they tell you what to do I'm old and I've had to settle On a different point of view
Too late to fix another drink – The lights are going out – I’ll listen to the darkness sing – I know what that’s about.
I loved you when you opened like a lily to the heat, you see I’m just another snowman standing in the rain and sleet, who loved you with his frozen love, his second hand physique, with all he is, and all he was, A thousand kisses deep.
And death is old But it's always new I freeze with fear And I'm there for you
I don't smoke no cigarette I don't drink no alcohol I ain't had much loving yet But that's always been your call Hey I don't miss it baby I got no taste for anything at all
I’ll try to say a little more: Love went on and on Until it reached an open door – Then Love Itself Love Itself was gone.
I said there'd been a flood. I said there's nothing left. I hoped that you would come. I gave you my address.
So I let my heart get frozen To keep away the rot My father says I'm chosen My mother says I'm not
O Crown of Light, O Darkened One, I never thought we’d meet. You kiss my lips, and then it’s done: I’m back on Boogie Street.
Ah, the moon's too bright The chain's too tight The beast won't go to sleep
And he cut my lip And he cut my heart. So I could not drink From the river dark.
O solitude of longing Where love has been confined Come healing of the body Come healing of the mind
My mirrored twin, my next of kin, I’d know you in my sleep and who but you would take me in, a thousand kisses deep.
Suddenly the night has grown colder The god of love preparing to depart Alexandra hoisted on his shoulder They slip between the sentries of the heart
But I'm stubborn as those garbage bags that Time cannot decay, I'm junk but I'm still holding up this little wild bouquet
The autumn moved across your skin, got something in my eye, a light that doesn’t need to live, and doesn’t need to die. A riddle in the book of love, obscure and obsolete, till witnessed here in time and blood, A thousand kisses deep.
There's nobody missing There is no reward Little by little We're cutting the cord We're spending the treasure, oh, no, no That love cannot afford I know you can feel it The sweetness restored
The ponies run, the girls are young, The odds are there to beat. You win a while, and then it’s done – Your little winning streak.
I like to take my time I like to linger as it flies A weekend on your lips A lifetime in your eyes
Then he struck my heart With a deadly force, And he said, ‘This heart: It is not yours.’
Everybody knows that you love me baby Everybody knows that you really do Everybody knows that you've been faithful Ah give or take a night or two
Steer your way past the ruins of the Altar and the Mall Steer your way through the fables of Creation and The Fall Steer your way past the Palaces that rise above the rot Year by year, month by month, day by day Thought by thought
Your crazy fragrance all around Your secrets in my view My lost, my lost was saying found My don't was saying do
Ring the bells that still can ring Forget your perfect offering There is a crack a crack in everything That's how the light gets in.
Steer your way through the pain that is far more real than you That's smashed the Cosmic Model, that blinded every view And please don't make me go there, though there be a God or not Year by year, month by month, day by day Thought by thought
You sent me here You sent me there Breaking things I can't repair Making objects Out of thoughts Making more By thinking not
And you who were bewildered by a meaning Whose code was broken, crucifix uncrossed – Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving Then say goodbye to Alexandra lost
I see you standing on the other side I don't know how the river got so wide I loved you baby, way back when And all the bridges are burning that we might have crossed But I feel so close to everything that we lost We'll never, we'll never have to lose it again
If you are the dealer, I'm out of the game If you are the healer, it means I'm broken and lame If thine is the glory then mine must be the shame You want it darker We kill the flame
I used to be your favorite drunk Good for one more laugh Then we both ran out of luck Luck was all we ever had
There'll be the breaking of the ancient Western code Your private life will suddenly explode There'll be phantoms There'll be fires on the road And the white man dancing You'll see your woman Hanging upside down Her features covered by her fallen gown And all the lousy little poets Coming round Tryin' to sound like Charlie Manson
Confined to sex, we pressed against The limits of the sea: I saw there were no oceans left For scavengers like me.
I was born like this, I had no choice I was born with the gift of a golden voice And twenty-seven angels from the Great Beyond They tied me to this table right here In the Tower of Song
I’m naked and I’m filthy And both of us are guilty
the fiddler fiddles something so sublime all the women tear their blouses off and the men they dance on the polka-dots and it's partner found, it's partner lost and it's hell to pay when the fiddler stops
I've seen the future, brother: It is murder
Who broke the heart and made it new? Who's moving on, who's kiddin' who?
So I knelt there at the delta, at the alpha and the omega, at the cradle of the river and the seas. And like a blessing come from heaven for something like a second I was healed and my heart was at ease.
And there's a mighty judgment coming, but I may be wrong You see, you hear these funny voices In the Tower of Song
Upheld by the simplicities of pleasure They gain the light, they formlessly entwine And radiant beyond your widest measure They fall among the voices and the wine
When you've fallen on the highway and you're lying in the rain, and they ask you how you're doing of course you'll say you can't complain
You always said we’re equal So let me march with you Just an extra in the sequel To the old red white and blue
She stands before you naked you can see it, you can taste it, and she comes to you light as the breeze. Now you can drink it or you can nurse it, it don't matter how you worship as long as you're down on your knees.
By the rivers dark I wandered on. I lived my life in Babylon. And I did forget My holy song: And I had no strength In Babylon.
All your moves are swift All your turns are tight Let me catch my breath I thought we had all night
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A. It's coming through a crack in the wall; on a visionary flood of alcohol; from the staggering account of the Sermon on the Mount which I don't pretend to understand at all. It's coming from the silence on the dock of the bay, from the brave, the bold, the battered heart of Chevrolet: Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.
And let the heavens hear it The penitential hymn Come healing of the spirit Come healing of the limb
There's a lover in the story But the story's still the same There's a lullaby for suffering And a paradox to blame But it's written in the scriptures And it's not some idle claim You want it darker We kill the flame
I was alone on the road, your love was so confusing And all my teachers told me that I had myself to blame But in the grip of sensual illusion A sweet unknowing unified the name
Magnified, sanctified, be thy holy name Vilified, crucified, in the human frame A million candles burning for the help that never came
They're lining up the prisoners And the guards are taking aim I struggled with some demons They were middle class and tame I didn't know I had permission to murder and to maim
So come, my friends, be not afraid. We are so lightly here. It is in love that we are made; In love we disappear.
I see my life In full review It was never me It was always you
We'll be going down so deep the river's going to weep, and the mountain's going to shout Amen!
Show me the place where my head is bendin' low Show me the place where you want your slave to go
I’m tired of choosing desire I been saved by a blessed fatigue The gates of commitment unwired And nobody trying to leave
Yeah my friends are gone and my hair is grey I ache in the places where I used to play And I'm crazy for love but I'm not coming on I'm just paying my rent every day Oh in the Tower of Song
There's an attic where children are playing Where I've got to lie down with you soon In a dream of Hungarian lanterns In the mist of some sweet afternoon And I'll see what you've chained to your sorrow All your sheep and your lilies of snow
We find ourselves on different sides Of a line nobody drew Though it all may be one in the higher eye Down here where we live it is two
I've seen the nations rise and fall I've heard their stories, heard them all But love's the only engine of survival Your servant here, he has been told To say it clear, to say it cold: It's over, it ain't going Any further And now the wheels of heaven stop You feel the devil's riding crop Get ready for the future: It is murder
I've heard the soul unfolds in the chambers of its longing And the bitter liquor sweetens in the hammered cup Ah but all the ladders of the night have fallen Just darkness now, to lift the longing up
Why don’t you come on back to the war, that’s right, get in it, why don’t you come on back to the war, it’s just beginning.
If your life is a leaf that the seasons tear off and condemn they will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem.
An Eskimo showed me a movie he’d recently taken of you: the poor man could hardly stop shivering, his lips and his fingers were blue. I suppose that he froze when the wind took your clothes and I guess he just never got warm. But you stand there so nice, in your blizzard of ice, oh please let me come into the storm.
I loved your master perfectly I taught him all that he knew. He was starving in some deep mystery like a man who is sure what is true.
I have begun to long for you, I who have no greed; I have begun to ask for you, I who have no need. You say you’ve gone away from me, but I can feel you when you breathe.
Hungry as an archway through which the troops have passed, I stand in ruins behind you, with your winter clothes, your broken sandal straps.
Well, you tell me that your lover has a broken limb, you say you’re kind of restless now and it’s on account of him.
Oh let me see your beauty when the witnesses are gone Let me feel you moving like they do in Babylon Show me slowly what I only know the limits of Dance me to the end of love
I tried to leave you, I don’t deny I closed the book on us, at least a hundred times.
And I can’t wait to tell you to your face And I can’t wait for you to take my place You are The Naked Angel In My Heart You are The Woman With Her Legs Apart It’s written on the walls of this hotel You go to heaven once you’ve been to hell
Then let the other selves be wrong, yeah, let them manifest and come till every taste is on the tongue, till love is pierced and love is hung, and every kind of freedom done
O come with me my little one, we will find that farm and grow us grass and apples there and keep all the animals warm. And if by chance I wake at night and I ask you who I am, O take me to the slaughterhouse, I will wait there with the lamb.
Ah they’re shutting down the factory now Just when all the bills are due And the fields they’re under lock and key Tho’ the rain and the sun come through And springtime starts but then it stops In the name of something new And all the senses rise against this Coming back to you
Like a baby, stillborn, like a beast with his horn I have torn everyone who reached out for me.
We met when we were almost young deep in the green lilac park. You held on to me like I was a crucifix, as we went kneeling through the dark.
And there are no letters in the mailbox, and there are no grapes upon the vine, and there are no chocolates in the boxes anymore, and there are no diamonds in the mine.
I cried, “Oh, Lady Midnight, I fear that you grow old, the stars eat your body and the wind makes you cold
So daily I renew my idle duty I touch her here and there – I know my place I kiss her open mouth and I praise her beauty and people call me traitor to my face
But my darling says “Leonard, just let it go by That old silhouette on the great western sky” So I pick out a tune and they move right along and they’re gone like the smoke and they’re gone like this song
And why are you so quiet now standing there in the doorway? You chose your journey long before you came upon this highway.
But I swear by this song and by all that I have done wrong I will make it all up to thee.
It was deep into his fiery heart he took the dust of Joan of Arc, and then she clearly understood if he was fire, oh then she must be wood.
And Jesus was a sailor When he walked upon the water And he spent a long time watching From his lonely wooden tower And when he knew for certain Only drowning men could see him He said “All men will be sailors then Until the sea shall free them” But he himself was broken Long before the sky would open Forsaken, almost human He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone And you want to travel with him And you want to travel blind And you think maybe you’ll trust him For he’s touched your perfect body with his mind.
Your master took you travelling, well at least that’s what you said. And now do you come back to bring your prisoner wine and bread?
Your pain is no credential here, it’s just the shadow, shadow of my wound.
And here where there is no description Oh here in the moment at hand No sinner need rise up forgiven No victim need limp to the stand
I met a woman long ago her hair the black that black can go, Are you a teacher of the heart? Soft she answered no. I met a girl across the sea, her hair the gold that gold can be, Are you a teacher of the heart? Yes, but not for thee.
Oh bless thee continuous stutter Of the word being made into flesh
The cripple here that you clothe and feed is neither starved nor cold; he does not ask for your company, not at the centre, the centre of the world.
Yes, you who are broken by power, you who are absent all day, you who are kings for the sake of your children’s story, the hand of your beggar is burdened down with money, the hand of your lover is clay.
the patron Saint of envy and the grocer of despair
She used to wear her hair like you except when she was sleeping, and then she’d weave it on a loom of smoke and gold and breathing.
And may the spirit of this song, may it rise up pure and free. May it be a shield for you, a shield against the enemy.
And deep into his fiery heart he took the dust of Joan of Arc, and high above the wedding guests he hung the ashes of her wedding dress.
to wear upon my swollen appetite.“ Well, I’m glad to hear you talk this way, you know I’ve watched you riding every day and something in me yearns to win such a cold and lonesome heroine.
Come over to the window, my little darling, I’d like to try to read your palm. I used to think I was some kind of Gypsy boy before I let you take me home.
Then I took the dust of a long sleepless night and I put it in your little shoe. And then I confess that I tortured the dress that you wore for the world to look through.
And the light came from her body And the night went through her grace All summer long she touched me And I knew her, I knew her Face to face
Let’s meet tomorrow if you choose Upon the shore, beneath the bridge That they are building on some endless river
And I’ve read the Bill of Human Rights And some of it was true But there wasn’t any burden left So I’m laying it on you.”
I listened to your kisses at the door I never heard the world so clear before You ran your bath and you began to sing I felt so good I couldn’t feel a thing
Like a worm on a hook, like a knight from some old fashioned book I have saved all my ribbons for thee.
Now the flames they followed Joan of Arc as she came riding through the dark; no moon to keep her armour bright, no man to get her through this very smoky night.
And we read from pleasant Bibles that are bound in blood and skin That the wilderness is gathering All its children back again
And now this woman by your side, well, she’s asleep And there’s nothing you can give her and there’s nothing you want to keep
Just take this longing from my tongue all the lonely things my hands have done. Let me see your beauty broken down like you would do for one your love.
And she shows you where to look Among the garbage and the flowers There are heroes in the seaweed There are children in the morning They are leaning out for love And they will lean that way forever While Suzanne holds the mirror
Ah but if you cannot raise your love To a very high degree, Then you’re just the man I’ve been thinking of – So come and stand with me.
You who wish to conquer pain, you must learn, learn to serve me well.
Why don’t you try to do without him? Why don’t you try to live alone? Do you really need his hands for your passion? Do you really need his heart for your throne?
I left a wife in Tennessee And a baby in Saigon – I risked my life, but not to hear Some country-western song.
I did my best, it wasn’t much I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch I’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you And even though it all went wrong I’ll stand before the Lord of Song With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
Oh take this longing from my tongue, all the useless things my hands have done, untie for me your hired blue gown, like you would do for one that you love.
I heard of a saint who had loved you, so I studied all night in his school. He taught that the duty of lovers is to tarnish the golden rule. And just when I was sure that his teachings were pure he drowned himself in the pool. His body is gone but back here on the lawn his spirit continues to drool.
It’s like our visit to the moon or to that other star I guess you go for nothing if you really want to go that far.
Well I’ve been where you’re hanging, I think I can see how you’re pinned: When you’re not feeling holy, your loneliness says that you’ve sinned.
I lit a thin green candle, to make you jealous of me. But the room just filled up with mosquitos, they heard that my body was free.
Too early for the rainbow, too early for the dove These are the final days, this is the darkness, this is the flood And there is no man or woman can be touched But you who come between them will be judged
He tried to make a final stand beside the railway track She said, “The art of longing’s over and it’s never coming back.”
The judges said you missed it by a fraction rise up and brace your troops for the attack Ah the dreamers ride against the men of action Oh see the men of action falling back
Now the crickets are singing The vesper bells ringing The cat’s curled asleep in his chair I’ll go down to Bill’s Bar I can make it that far And I’ll see if my friends are still there Yes, and here’s to the few Who forgive what you do And the fewer who don’t even care And the night comes on It’s very calm I want to cross over, I want to go home But she says, Go back, go back to the World
Those who dance, begin to dance Those who weep begin Those who earnestly are lost Are lost and lost again
I asked my father, I said, “Father change my name.” The one I’m using now it’s covered up with fear and filth and cowardice and shame.
Even in your arms I know I’ll never get it right Even when you bend to give me Comfort in the night
And the last time that I saw her she was living with some boy who gives her soul an empty room and gives her body joy.
Your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you She tied you to a kitchen chair She broke your throne, and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Ah, there is no comfort in the covens of the witch, some very clever doctor went and sterilized the bitch, and the only man of energy, yes the revolution’s pride, he trained a hundred women just to kill an unborn child.
Oh, your chains are too dark For the seas you must swim You are smiling at the seaweed But your smile is too grim
And I thank you, I thank you for doing your duty, you keepers of truth, you guardians of beauty. Your vision is right, my vision is wrong, I’m sorry for smudging the air with my song.
But here, right here, between the birthmark and the stain, between the ocean and your open vein, between the snowman and the rain, once again, once again, love calls you by your name.
For now I need your hidden love. I’m cold as a new razor blade. You left when I told you I was curious, I never said that I was brave.
Your letters they all say that you’re beside me now. Then why do I feel alone? I’m standing on a ledge and your fine spider web is fastening my ankle to a stone.
I leave the lady meditating on the very love which I, I do not wish to claim, I journey down the hundred steps, but the street is still the very same.
And I sing this for the captain Whose ship has not been built For the mother in confusion Her cradle still unfilled
Well, I argued all night like so many have before, saying, “Whatever you give me, I seem to need so much more.” Then she pointed at me where I kneeled on her floor, she said, “Don’t try to use me or slyly refuse me, just win me or lose me, it is this that the darkness is for.”
Some girls wander by mistake into the mess that scalpels make. Are you the teachers of my heart? We teach old hearts to break.
And now the infant with his cord is hauled in like a kite, and one eye filled with blueprints, one eye filled with night.
I believe that you heard your master sing when I was sick in bed. I suppose that he told you everything that I keep locked away in my head.
Do you remember all of those pledges That we pledged in the passionate night Ah they’re soiled now, they’re torn at the edges Like moths on a still yellow light No penance serves to renew them No massive transfusions of trust Why not even revenge can undo them So twisted these vows and so crushed
I am the distance you put between all of the moments that we will be.
I choose the rooms that I live in with care, the windows are small and the walls almost bare, there’s only one bed and there’s only one prayer; I listen all night for your step on the stair.
And now I hear your master sing, you kneel for him to come. His body is a golden string that your body is hanging from.
Through windows in the dark The children come, the children go Like arrows with no targets Like shackles made of snow
Like any dealer he was watching for the card That is so high and wild He’ll never need to deal another He was just some Joseph looking for a manger
Where are you, Judy, where are you, Anne? Where are the paths your heroes came? Wondering out loud as the bandage pulls away, was I, was I only limping, was I really lame?
And it’s time for the burden it’s time for the whip Will she walk through the flame Can he shoot from the hip
Now I’ve heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord But you don’t really care for music, do you? It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift The baffled king composing Hallelujah
But you’ve used up all your coupons except the one that seems to be written on your wrist along with several thousand dreams.
Maybe I’m still hurting I can’t turn the other cheek But you know that I still love you It’s just that I can’t speak I looked for you in everyone And they called me on that too I lived alone but I was only Coming back to you
And they’re handing down my sentence now And I know what I must do Another mile of silence while I’m Coming back to you
The door is open, you can’t close your shelter You try the handle of the road It opens, do not be afraid It’s you my love, you who are the stranger
I’m on the side that’s always lost Against the side of Heaven I’m on the side of Snake-eyes tossed Against the side of Seven.
But you lost them in your freedom And you need him now, you’re wild Blessed is the memory Of everybody’s child
Then fire, make your body cold, I’m going to give you mine to hold,“ saying this she climbed inside to be his one, to be his only bride.
Now the clasp of this union who fastens it tight? Who snaps it asunder the very next night Some say the rider Some say the mare Or that love’s like the smoke beyond all repair
With one hand on the hexagram and one hand on the girl I balance on a wishing well that all men call the world.
As a falling leaf may rest A moment on the air So your head upon my breast So my hand upon your hair
I’m not asking for mercy Not from the man You just don’t ask for mercy While you’re still on the stand
And many nights endure Without a moon or star So we will endure When one is gone and far
And then leaning on your window sill He’ll say one day you caused his will To weaken with your love and warmth and shelter
The rain falls down on last year’s man An hour has gone by And he has not moved his hand But everything will happen if he only gives the word The lovers will rise up And the mountains touch the ground But the skylight is like skin for a drum I’ll never mend And all the rain falls down amen On the works of last year’s man
You’re faithful to the better man, I’m afraid that he left. So let me judge your love affair in this very room where I have sentenced mine to death.
If I, if I have been untrue I hope you know it was never to you.
Then I saw you naked in the early dawn, oh, I hoped you would be someone new. I reached for you but you were gone, so lady I’m going too.
And there’s nothing to follow There’s nowhere to go She’s gone like the summer gone like the snow
That’s all I can say, baby That’s all I can say It wasn’t for nothing That they put me away I fell with my angel Down the chain of command There’s a Law, there’s an Arm, there’s a Hand
Lost in the rages of fragrance Lost in the rags of remorse Lost in the waves of a sickness That loosens the high silver nerves
When I am on a pedestal, you did not raise me there. Your laws do not compel me to kneel grotesque and bare. I myself am the pedestal for this ugly hump at which you stare
We are so small between the stars, so large against the sky, and lost among the subway crowds I try to catch your eye.
You met him at some temple, where they take your clothes at the door. He was just a numberless man in a chair who’d just come back from the war.
And when we fell together all our flesh was like a veil That I had to draw aside to see The serpent eat its tail
Some women wait for Jesus, and some women wait for Cain So I hang upon my altar And I hoist my axe again And I take the one who finds me back to where it all began When Jesus was the honeymoon And Cain was just the man
But I lingered on her thighs a fatal moment I kissed her lips as though I thirsted still My falsity had stung me like a hornet The poison sank and it paralysed my will
in city and in forest they smiled like me and you, but now it’s come to distances and both of us must try, your eyes are soft with sorrow, Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye.
Now my heart’s like a blister From doing what I do If the moon has a sister It’s got to be you
And where, where, where is my Gypsy wife tonight I’ve heard all the wild reports, they can’t be right But whose head is this she’s dancing with on the threshing floor Whose darkness deepens in her arms a little more
Do you want to be the ditch around a tower? Do you want to be the moonlight in his cave? Do you want to give your blessing to his power as he goes whistling past his daddy, past his daddy’s grave
If it be your will That a voice be true From this broken hill I will sing to you From this broken hill All your praises they shall ring If it be your will To let me sing
The age of lust is giving birth, and both the parents ask the nurse to tell them fairy tales on both sides of the glass.
But let me ask you one more time, O children of the dusk, All these hunters who are shrieking now oh do they speak for us?
And the vow of compassion That you swore through your teeth When the war began to end And the photographs weep
Goodnight, my darling, I hope you’re satisfied, the bed is kind of narrow, but my arms are open wide. And here’s a man still working for your smile.
Yes you who must leave everything that you cannot control. It begins with your family, but soon it comes around to your soul.
I’m not looking for another as I wander in my time, walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme you know my love goes with you as your love stays with me, it’s just the way it changes, like the shoreline and the sea, but let’s not talk of love or chains and things we can’t untie, your eyes are soft with sorrow, Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye.
Do not dress in those rags for me, I know you are not poor; you don’t love me quite so fiercely now when you know that you are not sure, it is your turn, beloved, it is your flesh that I wear.
A war between the odd and the even.
Well I stepped into an avalanche, it covered up my soul; when I am not this hunchback that you see, I sleep beneath the golden hill.
And here, right here, between the dancer and his cane, between the sailboat and the drain, between the newsreel and your tiny pain, once again, once again, love calls you by your name.
I changed my style to silver I changed my clothes to black And where I would surrender Ah now I would attack
She said, "I’m tired of the war, I want the kind of work I had before, a wedding dress or something white to wear upon my swollen appetite.”
Then lay your rose on the fire The fire give up to the sun The sun give over to splendour In the arms of the high holy one
And draw us near And bind us tight All your children here In their rags of light In our rags of light All dressed to kill And end this night If it be your will
I met a man who lost his mind in some lost place I had to find, follow me the wise man said, but he walked behind.
I asked her to hold me, I said, “Lady, unfold me,” but she scorned me and she told me I was dead and I could never return.
Well I lived with a child of snow when I was a soldier, and I fought every man for her until the nights grew colder.
Into this furnace I ask you now to venture…
She took his tavern parliament, his cap, his cocky dance, she mocked his female fashions and his working-class moustache.
Like a bird on the wire, like a drunk in a midnight choir I have tried in my way to be free.
She took his much admired oriental frame of mind and the heart-of-darkness alibi his money hides behind She took his blonde madonna and his monastery wine – “This mental space is occupied and everything is mine.”
Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river You can hear the boats go by You can spend the night beside her And you know that she’s half crazy But that’s why you want to be there And she feeds you tea and oranges That come all the way from China And just when you mean to tell her That you have no love to give her Then she gets you on her wavelength And she lets the river answer That you’ve always been her lover And you want to travel with her And you want to travel blind And you know that she will trust you For you’ve touched her perfect body with your mind.
So, now that you’ve decided To follow the sun Like a shadow of birds Or a king on the run
Well, I’ve been waiting, I was sure We’d meet between the trains we’re waiting for I think it’s time to board another Please understand, I never had a secret chart To get me to the heart of this Or any other matter While he talks like this, you don’t know what he’s after When he speaks like this, you don’t know what he’s after
Or she’ll make a break for the high plateau where there’s nothing above and there’s nothing below
The baby’s crying, so you do not go outside, and all your work it’s right before your eyes.
I met a lady, she was playing with her soldiers in the dark Oh one by one she had to tell them That her name was Joan of Arc
And you wrap up his tired face in your hair and he hands you the apple core. Then he touches your lips now so suddenly bare of all the kisses we put on some time before.
I fought in the old revolution on the side of the ghost and the King. Of course I was very young and I thought that we were winning; I can’t pretend I still feel very much like singing as they carry the bodies away.
Oh, you are really such a pretty one. I see you’ve gone and changed your name again. And just when I climbed this whole mountainside, to wash my eyelids in the rain!
Do you need to hold a leash to be a lady?
And who are you?“ she sternly spoke to the one beneath the smoke. "Why, I’m fire,” he replied, “And I love your solitude, I love your pride.
Lift me like an olive branch and be my homeward dove
Just open up your dainty little hand. You know this life is filled with many sweet companions, many satisfying one-night stands.
And come forth from the cloud of unknowing And kiss the cheek of the moon
But climb on your tears and be silent Like a rose on its ladder of thorns
the crumbs of love that you offer me, they’re the crumbs I’ve left behind.
Yes, and here, right here between the moonlight and the lane, between the tunnel and the train, between the victim and his stain, once again, once again, love calls you by your name.
There’s a blaze of light in every word It doesn’t matter which you heard The holy or the broken Hallelujah
There is a war between the ones who say there is a war and the ones who say there isn’t.
Oh sometimes I see her undressing for me, she’s the soft naked lady love meant her to be and she’s moving her body so brave and so free. If I’ve got to remember that’s a fine memory.
O lady with your legs so fine O stranger at your wheel, You are locked into your suffering and your pleasures are the seal.
He said, "I locked you in this body, I meant it as a kind of trial. You can use it for a weapon, or to make some woman smile.”
But the Rose I sickened with a scarlet fever and the Swan I tempted with a sense of shame She said at last I was her finest lover and if she withered I would be to blame
You will never see a man this naked I will never hold a woman this close
And you say you’ve been humbled in love Cut down in your love Forced to kneel in the mud next to me Ah but why so bitterly turn from the one Who kneels there as deeply as thee
I went down to the place Where I knew she lay waiting Under the marble and the snow I said, Mother I’m frightened The thunder and the lightning I’ll never come through this alone She said, I’ll be with you My shawl wrapped around you My hand on your head when you go And the night came on It was very calm I wanted the night to go on and on But she said, Go back, Go back to the World
May Christ have mercy on your soul For making such a joke Amid these hearts that burn like coal And the flesh that rose like smoke.
As the mist leaves no scar On the dark green hill So my body leaves no scar On you and never will
I showed my heart to the doctor: he said I just have to quit. Then he wrote himself a prescription, and your name was mentioned in it! Then he locked himself in a library shelf with the details of our honeymoon, and I hear from the nurse that he’s gotten much worse and his practice is all in a ruin.
And though I wear a uniform I was not born to fight All these wounded boys you lie beside Goodnight, my friends, goodnight
One by one, the guests arrive The guests are coming through The open-hearted many The broken-hearted few And no one knows where the night is going And no one knows why the wine is flowing Oh love I need you
I greet you from the other side Of sorrow and despair With a love so vast and shattered It will reach you everywhere
So you moved away the mountain That the sun rose behind And you said yourself a prayer And laid down with the blind
Your body like a searchlight my poverty revealed, I would like to try your charity until you cry, “Now you must try my greed.” And everything depends upon how near you sleep to me
and I lean from my window sill in this old hotel I chose, yes one hand on my suicide, one hand on the rose.
Ah the silver knives are flashing in the tired old cafe A ghost climbs on the table in a bridal negligee She says, My body is the light, my body is the way” I raise my arm against it all and I catch the bride’s bouquet
Children have takes these pledges They have ferried them out of the past Oh beyond all the graves and the hedges Where love must go hiding at last
It’s hard to hold the hand of anyone Who is reaching for the sky just to surrender
The river is swollen up with rusty cans and the trees are burning in your promised land.
Your father’s gone a-hunting Through the silver and the glass Where only greed can enter But spirit, spirit cannot pass
And all the ladies go moist, and the judge has no choice, a singer must die for the lie in his voice.
and there is no space but there’s left and right and there is no time but there’s day and night
Your father’s gone a-hunting And he’s lost his lucky charm And he’s lost the guardian heart That keeps the hunter from the harm
It’s not the news of burning towns that ruins your mind Like a spool you turn and you turn but it won’t unwind No these wars you did not start, they don’t tear your sleep apart It’s just a man taking what he needs from the store room
True love leaves no traces If you and I are one It’s lost in our embraces Like stars against the sun
And the crickets are breaking his heart with their song as the day caves in and the night is all wrong
Now the courtroom is quiet, but who will confess. Is it true you betrayed us? The answer is Yes. Then read me the list of the crimes that are mine, I will ask for the mercy that you love to decline.
I sang my songs, I told my lies, to lie between your matchless thighs.
Why do you stand by the window Abandoned to beauty and pride The thorn of the night in your bosom The spear of the age in your side
And clenching your fist for the ones like us who are oppressed by the figures of beauty, you fixed yourself, you said, “Well never mind, we are ugly but we have the music.”
Trav'ling lady stay awhile until the night is over. I’m just a station on your way, I know I’m not your lover.
Just take this longing from my tongue, all the useless things my hands have done, let me see your beauty broken down, like you would do for one you love.
Let your mercy spill On all these burning hearts in hell If it be your will To make us well
Oh the world is sweet the world is wide and she’s there where the light and the darkness divide and the steam’s coming off her she’s huge and she’s shy and she steps on the moon when she paws at the sky
And while he talks his dreams to sleep You notice there’s a highway That is curling up like smoke above his shoulder
For the heart with no companion For the soul without a king For the prima ballerina Who cannot dance to anything
You kept right on loving, I went on a fast, now I am too thin and your love is too vast.
I saw her wince, I saw her cry, I saw the glory in her eye. Myself I long for love and light, but must it come so cruel, and oh so bright?
I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm, your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm, yes many loved before us, I know that we are not new, in city and in forest they smiled like me and you
Well you know that I love to live with you, but you make me forget so very much. I forget to pray for the angels and then the angels forget to pray for us.
I know you need your sleep now, I know your life’s been hard. But many men are falling, where you promised to stand guard.
And she comes to his hand but she’s not really tame She longs to be lost he longs for the same
Now I look for her always I’m lost in this calling I’m tied to the threads of some prayer Saying, When will she summon me When will she come to me What must I do to prepare When she bends to my longing Like a willow, like a fountain She stands in the luminous air And the night comes on And it’s very calm I lie in her arms she says, When I’m gone I’ll be yours, yours for a song
Through the days of shame that are coming Through the nights of wild distress Tho’ your promise count for nothing You must keep it nonetheless
Oh the sisters of mercy, they are not departed or gone. They were waiting for me when I thought that I just can’t go on. And they brought me their comfort and later they brought me this song. Oh I hope you run into them, you who’ve been travelling so long.
Dance me to the children who are asking to be born Dance me through the curtains that our kisses have outworn Raise a tent of shelter now, though every thread is torn Dance me to the end of love
The walls of this hotel are paper-thin Last night I heard you making love to him The struggle mouth to mouth and limb to limb The grunt of unity when he came in I stood there with my ear against the wall I was not seized by jealousy at all In fact a burden lifted from my soul I heard that love was out of my control
Your standing days are done,“ I cried, “You’ll rally me no more. I don’t even know what side We fought on, or what for.
