this is going to sound like I’m vagueing about somebody or being snarky and mean but for once I’m not, I actually haven’t seen a post like the one I’m about to describe for a little while, but—I’m always fascinated by the inconsistency of where people draw their personal lines of “this is just too implausible for me”.
like, I remember a lot of posts reacting to the uptick of Lady Knight art and posts about same by basically going “you know knights were basically just cops, right?” and “yeah well your sapphic romance isn’t gonna feel so cute when you think about how many orphaned peasant children were dying of dysentery just offscreen” and stuff like that, but it’s like—as soon as you look into the average people’s interests I guarantee you’ll find at least two or three things about which they’re willing to say “I know this isn’t realistic but I think it’s really cool” or something similar. speaking for myself, I know I’ve fallen prey to “this is popular on tumblr right now and that makes me never want to hear about it again” before and will do so again, but I’ll freely admit that I also do give other media and genres slack and credit that I don’t extend to the media and genres I’m not as interested in. I just think it’s interesting to see where people draw that boundary even if I often don’t agree with it.
#there’s more to be said about how you can also take the themes and ideas and aesthetics of something#and use them in a different context#knight and princess imagery might IMPLY a world with a monarch and systemic oppression and forced poverty#but they also might be something else or part of a story where that isn’t a factor#I think the inability to meet a work of fiction or art on its own terms is really damaging discourse but that’s a whole other post#anyway#gonna go play video games now. bye

even dogs pass the mirror test
#hello again everyone. how's it going#isat loop#in stars and time#isat fanart#in stars and time fanart#isat#lucabyteart#isat spoilers#so. had this idea Before getting my hands on the artbook and being validated. literally have a voice note from 4:30am on the 8th where#i frantically noted down this just horrid horrid horrid caption because i'd been musing on the sasasap Dress line all day i suppose#just kind of rotating in my brain the way any kind of first time trying on new clothes for them would be .#just absolutely mental breakdown material and not one i think would be recovered from quickly. they hate being in their own skin#like. a lot? like a lot. the collateral of any kind of transfemme read was barely in my mind until it ended up relevant again while i was#actively working on this. because christ that's a bad combo. 2x different forms of body dysphoria in one. maybe even 3x somehow#plus any scenario where they get clothes is... likely gifted. something they react viciously negatively to in game and i doubt#would improve thereafter. just a veritable katamari of disgust and self-loathing#like i was mostly just thinking abt how a lot of our collective depictions of loop being alienated from their body are rather abstract#in a body horror way mostly. on account of loop being more of a metaphor than a person half the time. so i think i wanted to depict#something closer to just. a human level of body dysphoria. no focus on the whole duplicate thing just... raw disgust for the self#but with the addition of recent discussion and playing ball more with the she/her loop and transfem loop angle...#scenario of leaning into femininity to try throw off suspicion on who they are PLUS realising they might want that PLUS the party#trying to use this to bond with them PLUS body dysphoria PLUS new!gender dysphoria PLUS the usual revulsion for wanting and desire#like. that is a catastrophic combination . not coming out of that one without it getting worse for a few weeks thereafter#that's a real lash out at everyone around them and then recede in shame type breakdown. which im sure looks interesting from#the party's pov because jesus christ that touched a nerve something awful (<- they only have half the context AT BEST)#. so . there's your free scenario to ponder on if you'd want to. seeing as ive done a picture without a shitload of words on it for once#ALSO don't get smart with me in the tags about the mirror test being an absolutely ass test in most regards re: self-awareness#or that things like minnows pass it. i'm a fellow pedant dont worry. it's just that minnow doesn't really have the same ring as dog yknow?#this is supposed to be like an absolutely excruciatingly self loathing thought spoken aloud of a caption. it's pithy and cruel on purpose#and more than a little inspired by (reblogged yesterday) liminal space's 'there is no other dog. it's just you'

On one hand, Young Justice is kind of neglected by the actual superheroes that should be looking out for them in a lot of crucial ways and very much failed by the adults around them
But on the other hand Red Tornado straight up hosts a parent-teacher conference where their respective legal guardians all show up, barring Batman who’s in traffic so Nightwing fills in instead because Robin’s dad does not know he’s a vigilante which is objectively hilarious
#Superboy does not have a name and his ass is constantly getting groomed like Clark please take a more active role in his life#And all of these guys need a healthy interaction with their respective legacies that does not involve heroing#Take them out for lunch! Thinking about how Dani's episode is called Kindred Spirits, which implies that her unique narrative role is to mirror Danny and act as a foil to him, and then the episode is like "Here's some ✨superficial similarities✨. She is now going to leave the plot entirely and be 💖homeless💖"
#danny phantom#text#controversial opinion ahead but...#i think the reason i don't vibe with certain takes on Dani is because a lot of them are like#''yeah she's her own unique person and going by a different name and is definitely not Danny <3''#but then they make her LIVE with him. like??? how is she her own person when she's living exactly the same life as the guy she's based on?#living in the same house with the same parents and the same older sister and the same school and the same town and the same powers??#you could argue that siblings are their own people despite sharing all of those things BUT THEY'RE NOT SIBLINGS. she is his CLONE.#there is inherent thematic baggage there that wouldn't be a factor in a mere sibling dynamic!#i feel like Dani would find it unbelievably stifling and I think it's high key the worst thing that could happen to her character.#even more than being fridged and homeless. because at least then you could fill in those blanks with anything more interesting.#She's at her most effective when she is able to stand on the other side of the fence and mirror Danny.#what makes her fascinating to me is her potential role as a foil. Her similarities to Danny are interesting only when they're#in a different context. Not when she's literally just living his life!#(my dislike of this trope is mostly directed at Butch Hartman because I can't believe a lot of fans actually APPROVE#of his alleged comment that Dani ''Fenton'' would have become canon eventually. Like when did we as a fandom start listening to him?#I took it as an admission he had no plans to do anything meaningful with Dani. She was never intended to b more than an accessory to Danny.#anyway don't mind me. The beauty of fandom is in its diversity of interpretations. i don't mean to yuck anyone's yum!#go forth and use Dani's character how you see fit. she needs more love lol

Remember this post where I talked about how funny Host!Vic’s gender neutrality is? Well now it’s even funnier because this episode seemingly confirmed something I have suspected to be true for a while now, which is that fictional Vic Michealis SOMEHOW DIDNT REALISE THEYRE BI?????
#this is so funny#suspected this because of their interactions with Leighanna and The Fourth Witch#compared to their interactions with male characters#with Leighanna they are obsessed with her they want her so bad but they seem to justify it by wanting to be LIKE her instead#the fourth witch on the other hand? very clearly flirting with them the whole episod#and they just don’t seem to pick up on it#meanwhile you have characters Jordache‚ Dr Milk‚#that frozen guy who’s name I forget#who they very openly flirt with once intrest is shown#and even in this episode I think vic would have reacted quite differently if it was Greg flirting with them#they seem so… hesitant and unsure‚ like they’re trying to reject Charlotte’s advances#which they like NEVER do with male characters‚ this guy wants love so bad#also god. the way they fall for Charlotte and become flattered by her advances as the episode goes on#and you’re just sitting there like. this woman cheated on her husband sixteen times. this will not end well#you just know vic is going to get unbelievabley attached after they hook up and charlottes going to lose intrest within seconds#also I love how Izzy was like ‘ok last time our characters relationship could pass as a friendship so this time I am NOT giving you an out’#god this episode was so good#the last couple haven’t really hit so well for me so this was a lovely reminder of why I love this show#MAN. the implications of this for their relationship with Bianca. they didn’t know. they had no idea.#shitpost#very important people#host!vic#vic michealis#vip#ALSO I believe irl vic prefers the term ‘queer’ over bi judging by that one interview I re read this morning#but I usd bi here because queer in certain contexts can be used for both sexuality and gender identity#so saying ‘they didn’t know they were queer’ might imply they didn’t know they were lgbt at all which clearly isn’t true#also host vic is not real vic so their sexuality could be different#dropout#dropout.tv

Getting a wee bit tired of how on every fic I write in which I hold the people who coveted a Silmaril accountable, people comment about how Fëanor was also obsessed with the Silmarils and chose them over his sons. Like, my good dude (gender neutral), Fëanor's grown-ass sons swore the oath of their own volition. They felt just as strongly as Fëanor about the murder of Finwë, and about the Valar's role in that.
Imagine that.
Furthermore, Fëanor was not "obsessed with the Silmarils," and that's actually a pretty funny thing to claim given that it was everyone else who felt entitled to his creations. Fëanor was angry because the Valar felt his creations should be on public display, and they got offended when he didn't agree. Fëanor was angry because after that, one of the Valar's own murdered his father to steal those very creations. His father who "was dearer to him than the Light of Valinor or the peerless works of his hands."
That is in the book, if you take the time to read it, by the way. It's canon.
Fëanor is a delightfully flawed character and I love him for it. But if you're going to criticize him for his flaws then at least criticize him for flaws he actually has and not ones you just made up or based off of fanon, for the love of fuck.
#tolkien#the silmarillion#feanor#the lack of reading comprehension is YIKES#the way people will outright ignore vital aspects of canon#which give context to why characters do what they do#and make them so much more complex and interesting#is exactly why i rarely engage in the fandom#it's like we're fans of two entirely different works#i will always love the silmarillion#but the fandom absolutely exhausts me#SIGH.#this is why i started using the block feature so liberally lmao#STAY. IN. YOUR. LANE.

Can u guys tell I like setting up different interpretations of the same character together yet
I've done so with swap(he's the most obvious one) and I've done so with horror. And now dusts on that list too. I have had thought of others like ink but, maybe another time
#in a situation where they're stuck together we have. dust clinging to murder. and murder unable to understand dusts nonverbal talking#they try to kill each other multiple times but they're equal-ish in power#I don't wanna put more context bc I will actively misinterpret them thank you very much#I like using their different multiverse names to like. give them an identity even beside each other#sans au#utmv#undertale au#dust sans#murder sans#UwU#just thought about horror.#it'd be. actually honestly horror would probably just wanna be called sans... and then there's axe and either butcher or horror#depending on. well no now I'm putting too much thought into this I don't like that#it's soon spooky month. and then it's meow raid. and then it's Christmas. sighs the end of the year istg....

ellie’s grief in the show is different than in the game because the show is on a new timeline.
ranty/rambly character analysis kinda idk
i keep seeing discourse ab this show and. i’m trying so hard not to care bc it’s all annoying to me lol but the one that keeps coming up is ellie wasn’t angry enough. but, the reason it feels that way and that maybe she’s “happier” in the show is because the timeline is different
in the game, joel dies, ellie is on her revenge path after a few days. in the show, ellie is physically hurt. she cannot go find anybody right now, she’s being held in the hospital while she recovers. also, she just lost the most important person in her life, she’s being kept under as much surveillance in that hospital as they can get. this whole process takes three months. that’s three months that ellie has already been actively grieving. all that rage is building inside her, probably venting in very strange ways as she’s being held up, but ultimately she’s trying to suppress it. why? she wants to leave, because she wants to fucking kill abby.
that’s why they make her talk to gail before she goes. that’s why she’s happy as a clam during the whole conversation. if you genuinely watched that and thought “wtf why is she so okay right now” i fear you were not the intended audience for this show. it’s been said over and over which is why it’s fascinating that people are still missing the whole point.
Ellie. Is. Lying.
She is lying to Everyone. she is fucking livid. she’s heartbroken, so much so that she’s numb. she’s coasting. the whole time she’s just coasting, waiting for the moment she explodes—the moment she finds abby.
that’s why you think she’s “out of character”—but she’s not. think about how she acted in season 1. she was silly and aloof and chatty and witty; and she was grieving. she had just lost her best friend and first crush and first kiss, the most important person in her life at that point had just died. but she put on that face. that goofy smile and stupid puns, that is the face she puts on while she grieves because she doesn’t want her devastation to be anyone else’s business. this is also interesting when you look at her behavior after the david situation, she is not herself. she’s fully dazed over and quiet. that was the tipping point for all this trauma that she just shut down. she couldn’t hide all of it anymore
you can also see it in the flashback episodes. she becomes more and more reserved (not necessarily angry, but certainly pulling away a lot) as she begins to really sort through truth and lies. that anger does come back until it has a reason to (eugene).
the timeline of ellie’s grief is so important because is shows that she has had ample time to put together a version of herself that works publicly. that falls apart when things start to get real, because what’s real is she is murderous and she is going to do terrible things (which she will end up regretting but that’s a whole other thought i have). dina’s “pep talk” wasn’t explaining to ellie why ellie needs to be angry, it’s her explaining why she, dina, wants to be a part of this. ellie knows why she is there, but she doesn’t want dina to be apart of the horrible acts she’s going to commit, she wants dina to remain her safe place and her sense of self—the self that still had joel. but selfishly, she can’t make dina not go, because she wants her there.
i also think that’s why ellie wasn’t mad about the pregnancy like she was in the game. it’s been months, the grief has settled into being familiar at this point, she’s not constantly on the edge; unlike the game where the wound was still fresh and that news was shocking, so since she’s hurting, she reacted hurt. but since in the show she has a bandaid on, she was able to avoid the hurt reaction.
lastly, to act like game ellie was constantly the worst version herself every minute she’s in seattle is just so dramatic and wrong. ellie and dina have nice moments, ellie has moments where she is sad and happy and angry and bittersweet. her grief is not simply rage—it’s human. that’s how the show is doing it too. it’s weird when someone you love dies because somehow, the world keeps spinning. it feels unfair, how dare life continue without someone i cared about with me. but it does, which means even as you miss someone you’re going to have happy moments, and excited ones, and silly ones. that doesn’t mean everything is ok, it just means something is right then in that moment.
anyway. i think the show is fine, it’s entertaining, it has solid enough plot, and more than anything it’s goal is to provoke thought and feelings, the same thing the game wanted. if you don’t like how they did it that’s fine, you can play the game. but if you’re giving the show a chance, give it a real one. contextualize s2 within the show, not the game, because they are different and if you keep mixing up content then yeah, it’s going to feel like a bad show. so everyone chill out and just have fun watching a little show damn
#tlou 2 spoilers#the discourse has been in my nerves if you couldn’t tell#i haven’t looked at the opinions on here tho so sorry if it seems out of left field why i felt the need to write this lol#i’m not saying the show is perfect or couldn’t be better#but i’m sick of people saying the show makes no sense when they’re using the game as context#like no the show makes sense within the show you just wanted them to make different choices#WHICH IS FINE#idk i’m going insane#i’m enjoying the show tho idc#loving lezzie ellie too 🫶🫶🫶#bonk thoughts#tlou#the last of us#ellie williams#dina tlou#joel miller#tlou hbo#tlou 2

When you stand in front of me and look at me, what do you know of the griefs that are in me and what do I know of yours?

Corlys, Addam & Laenor by Imperiat
#valyrianscrolls#asoiaf#addam velaryon#addam of hull#corlys velaryon#laenor velaryon#house velaryon#the dance of the dragons#fanart#asoiaf art#the dynamic between these three is so compelling to me#laenor existing as the bridge between corlys and addam#with addam obviously trying to build up that connection as much as possible#corlys goes out of his way to treat addam in a similar manner to laenor#with only a few key differences that say a lot about corlys’ own mindset#although all four of corlys’ children share parallels with him to some degree#laenor & addam are the ones who have the least in common with him#yet those two are also the ones who have the deeper relationship with corlys#grrm interconnected them to each other so well :’)#the kafka quote is taken out of its original context but it really fits the dynamic of these characters so I’m choosing to use it

Tropes, in and of themselves, are not bad. They exist for a reason, and have served as necessary story-building blocks since the dawn of time. A fantasy story leaning into a chosen one or hidden prince trope is not inherently a bad thing. I think a lot of people underestimate GRRM's very deep relationship with the genre and misunderstand how he engages with it in the text.
#I did a thing - I made another dumb meme 😞#asoiaf isn't avoiding key fantasy tropes - its reinforcing them albeit in many different ways#some are played straight (or close to straight) and some are flipped right over#also let us remember the cultural context in which grrm started writing this series pls :(#asoiaf#valyrianscrolls

some people need to practice saying "it's not my style but I'm glad you're enjoying it"
and even more people need to practice hearing it
you have got to accept that others can have different tastes than you without it meaning there's something inherently wrong about one of your opinions
#context since this is getting notes:#i told someone i realized i don't really consume fiction on my own anymore#(and in fact stated it as a 'this might be a problem I'll have to think on it' thing!)#and they took it as me looking down on them for only doing fiction content#'i don't like pancakes' is very different from 'I hate pancake eaters'#and 'i used to eat a lot of pancakes but can't remember the last time i made some for myself'#is definitely different!#but i realized i probably used to pull exactly the same shit when i was younger#so this post was about having self-awareness about your own reactions when people have different tastes than you

Anyways when are we gonna stop pretending this isn't about "getting back at" an imagined trans guy. Good job! You both finally recognized trans men as men, AND ignored that they are punished for being men in one sentence. Really special work happening here.

The controversy is in only considering trans men as "men" in a way to hurt them. While also in a way misgendering:
"You're only a man because I know implying you act like a cis man in all the bad ways hurts you. In reality I see you all as hysterical bitches out to hurt the rest of the trans community" isn't progressive. It's just being nasty to be nasty.
Imagine hating trans people so much you joke about wishing they all died, then make posts like this, and assume that people will still think you actually care about the trans community.
#like. come on.#imagine thinking acting like a middleschool bully is fun and cool ??#like. you know what youre doing.#and dont start on the “well this is about trans women and the 'dude' problem!!”#bc if it was REALLY about that then trans men wouldnt get mentioned like that#as most trans men get that you just dont call a trans woman dude.#“how do i find the sneakiest eay to take shots at trans people i dont like” isnt very progressive and leftist of you#be better#also nice job using the 'dude' in both the gendered and gender removed contexts#you are ALMOST to the point of recognizing how that word works !!!#wheres the fucking post breaking down the five different ways that Dude developed#“dude” in the “reference to a masculine person”#“dude!” the exclamation similar to “fuck!”#“dude” with a comma as in leveling the playing field as spoken from a woman to a man#etc etc etc#its used in two different ways structurally in this post#which. would be interesting to discuss. if this entire thing wasnt steeped in transandrophobia#idk the more i see of these posts the more im convinced#that theres a small group of trans gals on here (SMALL) that are angry that trans men exist for a number of reasons#and they just wanna take their anger out on acceptable targets#mark my words these same accounts wouldve been making these same posts about ace/aro ppl when it was cool to dunk on them#like why do people have to take shots at people in community with them rn#we are being hunted for sport irl and then you get online and find ppl trying to crumble solidarity#with silly little stupid shit like this

You know, I'm really really curious to see how post-enlistment BTS is going to sound thematically-wise.
In these past 2/3 years, they all had the chance to get uncomfortably honest and, for lack of a better term, liberal, in the way they explore their own sound, in a way we got to see very little of previously. We got the rapline fleshing out their work, and the vocal line braving into full-fledged solo stuff for the first time.
Hoseok, who keeps refining and pushing the boundaries of his sound. Who found his footing and is making it his own. The boy who was born for the stage finally gets to be on the spotlight as himself, standing on the shoulders of BTS's j-hope but going back to his roots as Hoseok.
Yoongi and Joon, who already have an incredibly rich discography, and are digging deeper into themselves - there's healing, there's catharsis, there's grief for a past self and hope for a new one. Between Yoongi's Suchwita and Joon's work on RPWP, there's a lot of conversations about life as an artist and as an ordinary person, about mental health and identity, the creative process, about leaving your youth behind and coming to terms with adulthood and the loneliness it brings.
Jin, Jimin and Jungkook who have finally ventured into longer bodies of work, who have finally got to explore who they are (as musical artists) outside and beyond the Bangtan umbrella. Jin especially with this upcoming tour and all the entertainment content he's been a part of, and gets to do things his own way.
Tae, who went the other way and invested in his relationships, who showed us more of himself not through music, but through the way he conducts himself with his friends, outside of the stage.
As Bangtan, they have always been very vocal about all of these, but it's the first time they all got to live life aa creatives on their own. There is a newer, better collective understanding of themselves and each other, and a new layer of maturity and transparency, which has been beautiful to witness it unfold.
I'm so very looking forward to see all of this new knowledge and experience being brought into BTS, and how the new chapter will reflect that once they get together again. Personally I feel like the MOTS series was the perfect mesh of their individual identities and sounds (which makes sense since it was the last Big Thing they did pre-covid that wasn't just a compilation of things like Proof. BE was great but had a very distinct sound and purpose under the Covid context), and if their recent solo work is anything to go by, we are going to see a completely new version of BTS that is bound to surpass all we know from them so far.
#Stop The Rain is giving me Big Feelings (and also the recent conversations around MOTS 7 in the context of the recent Sleep Token singles)#also i've been watching Suchwita these days and the Yoongi we know now is on a completely different journey of the one we knew post D-2#if you listen his agust d releases in order in comparison to rm's and j-hope's#you get to see 3 completely different journeys of three guys who have been together for nearly 15 years#and by that i mean there so many things that overlap in them but also are so so distinct from each other#and where they are now -> D-DAY vs Hope On The Street vs RPWP#(and in comparison to the vocal line who are sort of at the start of that personal journey. Jin being in a further ahead state)#like. we're so used to see the 7 together that it feels odd almost to really look at where they stand individually as of now#and how much they have ventured so far. it's almost like we're going back to the very foundations of BTS#and bringing 7 random people together again to make history. with the caveat that have a ridiculously amount of life experience#(both as artists and as individuals) under their belts. and the undeniable love and respect they have for each other unlike 12 years ago#(when they were still at the dawn of who they are now)#idk. i've been feeling quite introspective these days for a number of reasons and new music always makes me withdraw to myself#all of this to say. i miss bts and i'm sooooo exited for their group comeback. we are so so close guys 🥺💜#bts#bangtan#namjoon#jin#yoongi#hoseok#jimin#taehyung#jungkook

One of the most important things to practice in analyzing or even appreciating media is placing that media in the appropriate historical context.
For example, it is incredibly short-sighted to criticize Revolutionary Girl Utena for being formulaic and reusing animation sequences based on preferences and standards from the 2020s, but it's also incredibly short-sighted to only rebut that the repetitiveness is thematic when it was animated in 1997 and directed by a guy who worked on Sailor Moon.
#restrictions of the medium and the production can be used toward thematic purpose. but you shouldn't imply they exist for that purpose#and the end point of interpretation shouldn't be retroactively applied to conception#and watching old shows out of context of what else was being made around that time is just ignorant#like rgu in 1997 shouldn't be approached the same as haruhi's endless eight in 2009#repetitiveness is thematic in both but the context is different#for the record I think both are good. but i also binged endless eight and didn't have to tune in week to week for two months#so my opinion is also formed by removal from historical context. which i have to understand to see why it's disliked#it's normal to struggle watching formulaic 90s shows today when the access and infrastructure to view them is completely different#not to mention how cultural mindsets around media and entertainment have drastically shifted with those changes#you have to just put your brain in “old show” mode and let it do what it's gonna do man idk what to tell you. learn how to watch old media#revolutionary girl utena#rgu#utena#shoujo kakumei utena

As a bigender person who uses he and she pronouns with no preference for frequency of changing it up i am very defensive of the bazaar's pronoun usage. It doesn't give a shit ♡ however I still feel semi obliged to change it up and usually lean towards it/its because I need to assure everyone anxiously I recognize its crabgendered swag
But also i really do like how canonically the bazaar is referred to as he/she/it, most people have one set they lean towards, and the bazaar also is referred to with traditionally gendered titles like 'mother' and 'father'! And? Absolutely none of that is a reflection on what its gender identity is!
I think if the Bazaar wanted, it could communicate a preference, but doesn't— though I'm somewhat sure the Bazaar has never been referred to with 'they/them' (as a fellow person who simply isn't a they/them, I like this a lot. It isn't just 'the default pronoun for nonbinary people')
This has been 'the guy who really likes the bazaar, talking about the bazaar and gender a little, thank you very much'
#technically im nonbinary and couldnt think of a better word there but i personally dont id as nonbinary#bc while i am outside traditional gender binary by being bigender. i am like. binarygender#i feel equally a man and a woman so nonbinary while accurate doesnt feel fully right to me i just id as trans and bigender#but i cant call the bazaar trans. maybe she is but mostly i think alien crab has different ideas of gender and sex#fallen london#seriously not sure if baz has been called they/them. obviously tho most ppl usung pronouns for it dont even know hes alive#by recognize her crabgendered swag i mean im aware the baz is often viewed as Female in a misogynistic way and have anxiety#so i worry using she for a long time in a row. what if ppl think i dont know the diff between pronouns and gender (i have anxiety)#(i say this and have a comic where the bazaar is exclusively called she/her but like sentence two explains why. she as in vessal)#(he as in Him. first lines that haunted me for ages. deliberate pronoun choice in context beyond human gender thx)
