Another reason I dislike Les Mis adaptations that make Jean Valjean constantly openly angry/violent is because they miss that Jean Valjean is not allowed to be angry. The fact he is forbidden from expressing anger is, I argue, actually a very important part of his character in the novel!

One of the subtler political messages of the story is that some people are given freedom to express anger, while others are forced to be excessively meek and conciliatory in order to survive.

Wealthy conservatives like Monsieur Gillenormand can “fly into rages” every five minutes and have it treated as an endearing quirk. Poor characters like Fantine or Jean Valjean must be constantly polite and ingratiating to “their superiors” at all times, even in the face of mockery and violence, or else they will be subjected to punishment. If Gillenormand beats his child with a stick, it’s a silly quirk; if Fantine beats a man harassing her, she is sentenced to months in prison.

(Thenardier and Javert are interesting examples of this too. Thenardier acts superficially polite and ingratiating to his wealthy “superiors” while insulting them behind their backs. Javert, meanwhile, is completely earnest in his mindless bootlicking. But I could write an entire other post on this.)

The point is that….Jean Valjean has to be submissive and self-effacing, or he puts himself in danger. He can’t afford to be angry and make scenes, or he will be punished. The only barrier between himself and prison is his ability to be so “courteous” that no one bothers to pry into his past.

Jean Valjean is excessively polite to people, in the way that you’re excessively polite to an armed cop who pulls you over for speeding when you secretly have a few illegal grams of marijuana in the your car trunk. XD It’s politeness built on fear, is what I mean. It’s politeness built on a desperation to make a powerful person avoid looking too closely at you.

It’s politeness at gunpoint.

Jean Valjean has also spent nineteen years living in an environment where any expression of anger could be punished with severe violence. That trauma is reflected in the overly cautious reserved way he often speaks with people (even people who are kind and would never actually hurt him.)

So adaptations that have Jean Valjean boldly having shouting matches with people in public and beating cops half to death without worrying about the repercussions just make go like “???”

Because that’s part of what’s fascinating about Jean Valjean to me? On one hand, he is a genuinely kind compassionate person, who cares deeply about other people and behaves kindly out of altruism. But on the other hand, he was also “beaten into submission” by prison, and forced into adopting conciliatory bootlicking behaviors in order to survive. And it can sometimes be hard to tell when he is being kind vs. when he is being “polite” — when he is speaking and acting out of earnest compassion vs. when he is speaking and acting out of fear.

The TL;DR is that I think it’s important that even though Jean Valjean is very (justifiably) angry about the injustice that was inflicted on him, his anger is harshly policed at all times— by other people, and by himself. He has been told his anger is wrong/selfish so often that he believes it. His anger takes weirder more unhealthy forms because he has no safe outlet for it. His rage at society becomes a possessiveness towards Cosette and silent hatred of Marius, but primarily it becomes useless self-destructive constant hatred of himself. And while I might be phrasing this wrong, I think that’s what’s interesting about Jean Valjean’s relationship with anger— the way his justified fury at his own mistreatment gets warped into more and more unhealthy forms by the way he’s forced to constantly repress it.

The creators/showrunners, writers, and lead writer have all said a billion times "Kataang was always the heart of the show and by the time the first episode aired we were set on it being endgame. Some people in the crew liked BOTH Kataang and Zutara, but Zutara was NEVER seriously considered as a real possibility for endgame or even temporary romance. The only love triangle ever considered was Aang, Katara and MALE Toph."

It doesn't matter how many interviews yall fake, how many clips you take out of context, how many deleted scenes you claim existed without a shred of proof to back it up, how many times you go "but this actor whose job is ACTING not WRITTING says he likes Zutara" or "This writer that wrote tons of Kataang episodes said the word Zutara once when writting a scene between Zuko and Katara" - your ship is still fanon. That's not a dig at you or saying it's bad, it's just a fucking fact.

Write some fanfic if you like it so much, but don't turn the production of the series itself into your fanfic just so you can lie to yourself about how there was ever any chance of you getting what you wanted in the actual canon.

I really don't mind my logic being challenged. I've answered plenty of questions about my logic. I think the mistake a lot of people, TKKr and JKKr alike, make is that they hinge their entire argument on individual moments. Atomix becomes this huge thing and the second it gets challenged, everyone melts down gloating or getting defensive.

So often, one will come at the other with "Here's why this particular 0.6 seconds in time was NOT special." Ok? Great? You got me? I try to look at them as more of a whole picture and that's how I end up thinking it's different.

So there's a picture of Jimin and JK on Weverse. I don't know the context of it, I have to admit. Was it at an OT7 event? Were they just together? (I don't think your point about deleting instagram applies here because I don't think he can delete Weverse when BTS are entwined with it really.)

But let's take it as it is: A selca of Tae and JK in 2021, a selca of JK and Jimin in 2019.

The reason I find one of them special and one of them less so is not because it's a selca but it's a selca alongside all the other stuff I believe to be true. Does that make sense? Its not just a selca. It's a selca and seeing each other in their hiatus a decent amount and touching and closeness and some suspicious instances and a history of interaction that feels different to me. The selca is just a part of a wider picture.

And this applies to any one piece of the jigsaw. I'm sure you could find JK snuggling Hobi or Jin too. You could find examples of JK spending time at Jimin's house. Does the REST of the picture apply though? I don't personally find that the wider picture of his relationship with any other member rings out as romantic to me. I do find Taekook to be romantic based on a lot of different things, not just individual pieces. That's what I'm saying.

I've now said selca so many times that it doesn't look like a real word anymore. 😂

Ultimately, this is a Taekook blog. I don't want to live in an echo chamber but I didn't really start it to feel like I'm being told off by people I don't know. I don't think you should leave as such but is this the space for you?

Very weird how That Man’s Stans act like the show is “anti Grisha propaganda” and treat Grisha as an actual oppressed group of people that exist in real life in order to take it as face value as an allegory for real life oppression when there’s already tons of reasons to criticize oppression allegories that are “people with supernatural abilities that can kill people are the most oppressed group and are headlined by mostly white cishet able bodied characters that’s been done to death” therefore Leigh must be anti liberation for actual oppressed groups of people (and then proceed to talk over her as a Jewish disabled woman and insist that she “should know better” and make oppressed Grisha edits with Holocaust movie clips) when it’s established in the Grishaverse that real life oppressions still exist such as ableism, classism, racism (made an even bigger theme in the show), and xenophobia still exist within the universe alongside Grisha oppression but are treated very differently and a huge part of why that man’s philosophy doesn’t work is bc he’s privileged in every other way and therefore doesn’t care, in the show, he is even condescending towards Alina about it and undermines the racism and classism she’s been facing her whole life to prop up his goals and his point of view as a white man who’s never been in the body of an orphaned woman of color.

Hi! I totally can keep talking about Death Stranding forever (I know it's a very divisive game but imo on the whole the writing is like a well-oiled machine in ways that MGS just barely started to scrape askdjfh)

For the most part I haven't talked a *ton* about it at length because the series is just getting started and I feel weird making assertions that are likely to be fully subverted within a year or two. MGS has like. well, now, 25 years of shit going on. Sequels, prequels, fanon, etc., that Death Stranding...hasn't really had time to grow into yet.

I also tend to intentionally only post for dead series because the fandoms tend to be chiller lmao

Plus the fact that I got into DS right around the time that DS2 was announced, so I'm sitting here twiddling my thumbs knowing that there's about to be more content and context that I just don't have access to yet. I already feel like there's a lot more to be learned about the first game, just from the latest trailer drop.

Honestly I think the thing that really gets me with DS is that despite the borderline insanity of the setting, to me, there's a lot of dramatic irony and meta knowledge that makes DS pretty easy to follow compared to, like, any single MGS game. Maybe I'm just the exact target audience that the writing was intended for, but most of the big reveals felt less like a sucker punch and more of a dramatic swell.

Some reasons for this (please be gentle i am taking cutscene SCs from youtube videos, they're gonna look like shit):

First of all, this is basically frame 1 of being formally introduced to Amelie, we see...this lens flare. Look familiar?

...how about now?

We are introduced to her instantly with a sign of danger. A pretty one, but a sign of danger nonetheless. The fact that it's an inverted rainbow is important! It shows up around timefall because of chiral air disturbance. We don't know that yet in-game, but if you know about how light works you know that there's something Wrong(tm) about this.

A regular lens flare shouldn't be causing an inverted rainbow if it's causing one at all. I think in this cutscene Amelie's presence is causing that inverted rainbow. Throughout the game, people come up with various theories of their own to excuse her connection to the beach. Little do they know at the time how right they are...

She's also heavily backlit, which hides her features in an unsettling manner. In fact, I really can't think of anyone else that this happens to throughout the game (if anyone knows of another example PLEASE let me know!!!)

She gets pretty damn close before that rainbow disappears, but this is where I very quickly lost my initial trust in her (as the player).

I jokingly called called this her "Fox News reporter look," but it's very much constructed in a way that made me suspicious.

Let's talk about that red dress.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: Kojima fucking LOVES using color language, especially red, blue, and gold. It's been super obvious and explicit since like 2012.

The fact that we meet her wearing a red dress is not a coincidence!!! It's a great big flashing warning sign! It says "hey, this person is going to betray you! Do Not Fucking Trust!!!"

Compare Amelie's name card to Paz's from Peace Walker:

The art styles are different, but there are a couple of main throughlines. Namely, both have an emphasis on the color red, both are young (looking) women who are lying about their identities in order to ask the main character a favor. Characters vouch for them, from trusted advisors, to the main character himself in DS. And then they try to bring about armageddon.

Basically what I'm saying is that they're both the embodiment of white woman tears a wolf in sheep's clothing, if the sheep's clothing was still dripping in blood. We (characters, and maybe the players) believe that she's on our side because we want to believe she's on our side, and because other people that we ostensibly trust tell us she's on our side, while the extremely dissonant narrative and imagery of the scene are SHAKING US BY THE SHOULDERS TELLING US TO SNAP OUT OF IT.

Add to that the fact that we kind of vaguely, through that intro cutscene post-central knot explosion, know that the beach is connected to dying somehow, and that amelie seems to be on it, doing very stereotypical little girl in horror things there, like singing nursery rhymes slowly while walking into the ocean.

So we've basically been told that Amelie is Not Good, but we have to spend the game piecing together what kind of Not Good she is. The first hint is (surprise!) also in this cutscene!

I don't recall off the top of my head if I knew at the time how heavily egyptian mythology plays into DS, but I do remember this cutscene giving me a bad gut feeling about the concept of the West.

Very few Big Concepts in these games (the West, strand(s/ing), patriotism/nationalism, etc) are only symbolic of one thing. That's also true across the board in basically all art, but I feel the need to point that out in public posts because I don't want someone to eg, think that I say something means one thing, and then back that up, and then people think that means it can't mean something else! It can (and often does) mean both! and sometimes that additional meaning is super important!

Anyways, Die Hardman refers to Amelie going West. We don't really use that phrasing much, so it stuck out to me as euphemistic. Especially since we saw her after we died, and there's so much euphemism going on from the bridges team anyways. I mean, cufflinks "symbolize our connection?" Girl, you locked me to my bed with them. You drain my blood with them to turn into weapons. Call 'em what they are.

You'll even notice in the same cutscene that Amelie says "we made it to Edge Knot City" and Sam replies with "all the way to the Pacific?" Not "all the way to the west coast," or even a single question about why she was on the/his beach.

If you know anything about egyptian mythology, you might know that west is considered the direction of death and the underworld. ancient egyptians buried dead people on the west side of the nile river. Osiris, god of death and mummification, and king of the underworld, is referred to as "foremost of the westerners" among his epithets.

So the vibe that I got instantly was "Amelie is already dead, she led her team to die, and they are basically sending Sam on a suicide mission" though I didn't realize exactly how I was right at the time.

The other big thing I recall setting off my alarm bells as the game went on was the fact that nobody you meet has ever met Amelie in person. It's a very slow reveal, especially since most people seem to see online meeting and in person meeting to be mostly the same, and we're told that she set out with bridges one. That she went west. Turns out that...also wasn't literal.

I don't remember exactly when I started wondering if *sam* had ever even met her outside of the beach, but I do remember thinking that there was something off. For a little bit my guess was that she was entirely fictional, some sort of AI (pretty influenced by all the "dead person brought back by AI/hypno bullshit ngl), or maybe that Higgs could somehow disguise himself in the Beach in ways i didn't understand yet.

But I didn't feel *worse* for being able to figure things out ahead of time, I felt clever that I could piece together all the little hints and have a good idea of what was going on. It made death stranding feel more like a coherent sci fi narrative rather than a cheesy action story that's expected to follow certain strict genre conventions.

Not that I'm saying mgs or action in general are bad, but rather that imo Death Stranding feels...more mature and confident in some ways (and also isn't bogged down by 20 years of previous work. which. i don't even like my own shit from a year ago half the time, i cannot imagine having to write within the constraints you created TWO DECADES prior kjhksjfh). Maybe it's that it feels like less of a genre subversion and has more genre utilization? dunno. Now I'm thinking too much like an english major lkajshdf

I discovered this bloggers page too late and so wish she could come back and share her current thoughts on them. Alot of her judgements and theories I feel were so interesting and spot on despite being uncomfortable to shippers who might view them as the perfect couple or still romanticize BTS / BH and see them through rose tinted glasses. There are so many layers to the whole taekook situation that alot of newer tkkers don't like to get into because unfortunately it does end up as you say painting a more grim picture of what was going on.

Well first off, I hope her health is okay and wish she didn’t stop posting because of bad health .... unfortunately I’ve often read fans acc. with long-term health issues so... indeed it’s hard to acknowledge her more raw, dark posts,  but Tae and Jungkook's long-term relationship was almost crushed..., company did try and almost got to destroy them, their relationship hated and as she stated lost any respect by fans, Taehyung being dragged left and right, recurring depressions, members taking advantage and so on... it’s no wonder they would even try and date other women too,  assumptions like those linking Tae with that Wheein girl from Mamamoo (which is something that would fit with the dating info provided by sasaengs too). And so other many things, but alas there’s no time to delve into all this stuff except liking and reposting her stuff... 

So currently, I think she’d be very happy  seeing that taehyung and Jungkook's precious relationship is going so beautifully strong, that Taehyung gave us such beautiful last Taekook moments and so poignant MV with IU, Love Wins All, before being separated for military service. And I’m so satisfied because now I’m 100% sure they’ll be fine despite knowing Tae’s destination has such a nightmare condition to add.

And finally I’m sure she’d more than happy to know that her predictions were so spot-on... besides posting that Jungkook would stay at home most of the time which is what happened until summer... she said that Taekook would make an appearance together and we had that with the Dream Premiere. This proves how well did she know them. These type of fans are rather unique and special... , she was right there watching Tae and Jungkook interactions in fanmeetings abruptly changing from 2017 to 2008, nobody can’t deny her that experience... I think I could ramble a ton more about many things in her blog that caught my attention but I’ve barely any time to write anything more so

**Initial thoughts while watching the video (before any research or reading anything):

Yes that’s for sure that kind of bike, and it’s interesting because I always found those bikes scary, I’m scared of heights so that fall would hurt.

Charlie Chaplin:

Yes, let’s freaking go, I love old school Hollywood and the start of cinema, I don’t know if you ever listen to this podcast: http://www.youmustrememberthispodcast.com but its so good and gives great context to what was going on and stories lost to history.

This is fascinating, I did see a white horse in the background of the YT thumbnail but we never see it in the video

This line you pulled is interesting: the third carries a balance scale, rides a black horse, and symbolizes famine. One of Harry’s signs is Libra and the symbol for Libra is the scales. The scales reveal Libra's need for justice, balance, harmony, and fair play. Libra's glyph is representative of an equal sign or the horizon with the Sun rising above it.

**My thoughts / more in-depth:

*The Ladder*

This was bothering me, like it was the first thing, where is it going, why is he coming down from it. So I started looking into a ladder leading to the sky to figure out the symbolism, I was starting to think is it stairs to heaven? But it’s a ladder. And when I think of the sky I think of the heavens and space etc. But after finding what I found it made me think, is he in purgatory?

So what I found was the story of Jacob's Ladder, I’ll pull some interesting things:

Christianity

Jesus said in John 1:51 "And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man." This statement has been interpreted as associating or implicating Jesus with the mythical ladder, in that Christ bridges the gap between Heaven and Earth. Jesus presents himself as the reality to which the ladder points; as Jacob saw in a dream the **reunion of Heaven and Earth**, Jesus brought this reunion, metaphorically the ladder, into reality. As I was surfing through Tumblr after the video dropped, I noticed some were asking, where’s the blue bird? Why wasn’t he dressed as a blue bird, why is he the yellow bird. And some confusion because he's singing about a blue bird but he's yellow. 

And I’m like exactly, and I’m like yes they’re catching on, because like we said he’s the yellow bird, he’s not fully free, he’s a performer, a singer, he can’t up and fly away. He’s stuck in this circus, practicing away. Not going back up that ladder. Who is this blue bird, talked about but not seen. Which leads to my next point.

There was a missing presence in the video, the blue bird, no where in sight but mentioned frequently. Felt in the area and in the lyrics. But where is said blue bird?

So after the Celesine Venus and lyric matching and someone brought up on Tumblr the death card, I don’t have the link tho. But then cards started to pop into my head.

Death Card: Tho on the death card it’s normally a white horse and in the music video I can’t tell if the sun is rising or going down. I'm thinking its setting and its the golden hour.

THE FOOL DESCRIPTION

Totally separate from the music video but it came to me last night.

Was it all a dream?

Let me throw this out there. I was thinking about the past few music videos and the album as a whole. And I wonder, when we think of Harry’s House, we think of the physical space. The physical symbols, you are home door etc. But what if he was inviting us all into his mind, into his dreams? And I saw some comments that his videos don’t make sense,. But when do our dreams and fantasies we have in our head make sense? It’s our brain trying to figure out the outside world or its spirit sending out symbols. 

And when you look through his music videos through that lens and looking at dream symbolism that’s when it gets interesting and more fun as well. 😜🧐

When I saw it was Sagittarius I immediately thought about him being on the horse later so I wonder if that ties in. Sagittarius is known for being the sign of higher education, philosophy, and religion, and it rules travel. It makes me feels like the horse at the end may symbolize him either beginning this journey to higher understanding or highlighting that he reached the Sagittarius state, like he’s more self aware and educated and worldly.

That’s an interesting connection to make! When the TV is off, you can more clearly see yourself. It almost becomes a mirror.

Now I’m randomly thinking of the Greek myth of narcissus (yes where the word narcissist comes from). Basically narcissus fell in love with his own reflection “shut your mouth, open your eyes and see, I’m still the only one who’s been in love with me.”

Interesting because I think there’s a theme of fear of falling, or falling in love as dangerous, but he mentions it in many songs, literally falling. I totally think he has intimacy issues which can make falling in love scary. I can’t reference all his lyrics but some of the leaked ones had lines like “I could never get sick of you, I just bit off more than I could chew” “who’s this man holding your hand” I think falling in love freaked him out.

Sad clown

Okay basically I was talking about how I think Harry sees himself as Pierrot and is always pining for his Columbine. The sad clown becomes friends with the moon. This character is supposed to be a comic relief character.

There’s also a famous song called Tears of a Clown, by Smokey Robinson

Furthermore, the sad clown is a trope in art and creates the Sad Clown paradox, which explores the link between depression and using humor as a coping mechanism.

Vintage Circus

Okay! So I remembered after I posted my post yesterday about this tidbit I read at the Blues museum in St. Louis. It said that touring blues musicians started out touring with side show circuses as a way to reach people. We also see this in the Elvis movie, how Elvis started with touring with the local fair/circus. Many artists play fairs early in their career, specifically in the Country music field. Furthermore, the touring life is part of the circus as well as for Harry. There is a resonance there, it’s a similar lifestyle.

Bluebird

I think we talked about bluebird symbolism and how it was used in Bukowski poem to represent this hope or this dream, creative outlet as this bluebird that he has caged inside. Miranda Lambert has a song called Bluebird too. I think it’s interesting because he’s saying he can’t be a bluebird. Presumably he can’t be a bluebird like his person. But also it’s kind of this heartbreaking experience right. Like I wish I could be what you need but I can’t. If I could, I’d give you the world but I can’t be. And a lot of relationships have this outcome where ultimately you realize you just can’t be what they want or need and that means you aren’t meant to be together. It’s one of the most heartbreaking moments ya know? Also blue represents sadness and yellow represents joy. I think in his growth he’s accepting he can’t go back, he can only be who he is now and he has to release the past.

Clouds

Isn’t it crazy how even back then he was leaving hints. I wonder how intentional or coincidental (synchronistic) it was.

Also I had this thought too, his head is literally in the clouds, an idiom that means like not being in touch with reality or like being a bit delusional, unrealistic. Head in the clouds made me think of Drake.

Was it all a dream?

In promotion of the album he said that he wanted people to feel a day in the life of him and his mind. So yes some of this may be more dreamlike or not seem logical because our minds aren’t always logical

I Already Said It

Yeah they’re brats, but Mikey and Jay got brutally executed here. For cheating at a CARNIVAL. A flipping CARNIVAL. Yeah they deserve some sort of lesson, but...

You know what, I take back EVERYTHING I said about Jay’s mom being tolerable. She’s bad.

Yeah I think the punishment was way too far. They wanted the tour prize, and they don’t get it. THEY SHOULD HAVE STOPPED THERE.

But no, they don’t even get to be at the party AT ALL after that, AND additional punishments on top of that.

Heck, Mikey’s mom DRAGS HIM BY THE EAR AS HE SCREAMS.

Dhar Mann, dude, THIS IS ABUSE YOU’RE SHOWING, NOT FAIR PUNISHMENT.

So, let me get this straight, and August The Duck brought this up too in a video:

TRYING TO KILL SOMEONE, warrants NO punishment, in fact reward.

CHEATING AT A CHILDS GAME, warrants SHUNNING, physical abuse, mental abuse, and all of the above at once.

I’m not getting the message here Dhar Mann. Either you’re encouraging that kids will be punished for their bad actions, or they won’t be. PICK ONE.

I covered everything I could find involving Mikey’s character, and how bad the parents are. If I covered the latest video of these brats, I’d just be repeating myself. (Tbh, that post is probably my favorite Dhar Mann post I’ve made so far)

Honestly Dhar Mann’s just going off the wall at this point, with the MUCH more cartoonish thumbnails there whey SPIRTE the actors and you can see the white edges on them. (Why not just take a regular photo? You’re just making the hilariously bad faces on the thumbnails look stupider) I don’t know what his goal is anymore, and MORE AND MORE, it’s so blatant that he just wants views.

I’m heavily convinced it’s just the views, and he’s not even trying to send a decent morality anymore. People love watching Mikey suffer. So if Mikey suffers, people will watch it. 

Political video? Even if it’s bad representation? Boom. Views.

Just describe the scenario in the most descriptive, EXTREME, and off the wall way possible, and a sixteen million people are GUARANTEED to watch it.

I know, I’m only helping him since I have to sit through these videos to make these posts, but views ain’t everything guys. Subscriptions ain’t everything.

Especially with stuff like this, people’s mental health and well being is more important than getting followers. Admitting when you make a mistake and apologizing, and acknowledging you’re a person, is more important than playing the rich and famous ‘I can’t do anything wrong’ card. 

I only have 40 followers on this blog, as of the time of this post. So I have WAY less subscriptions than Dhar Mann does. But someone messaged me awhile back, and thanked me for my existence, thanking me for making these posts and calling out these videos. It was just ONE person, and yet that made my day.

To quote @womanofwords

“ Hi. I just wanted to express my gratitude for your existence. I don't normally see people critiquing Dhar Mann videos (AFAIK, you and @mellometal are the only ones that make posts like this) and exposing them as the problematic garbage that it truly is. You don't need to reply to this at all; this is just to say thank you for your service. “

You know what this tells me? Besides proving my point here? Even if it’s just forty people, or ten, or ONE, I’m making a difference from what I do, that it’s worth it to make not just these sorts of posts, but other content as well, like my drawings, my fics, my writings, my essays, and a ton of other stuff.

Now, for the record, I might as well get this out there: I do want to make more essay posts in the future, on content that I actually enjoy. So you might not see me making as many Dhar Mann posts as I did before. I’ll still do them, just expect other stuff from me. If you guys have any of his videos you want me to cover, message me, and I’ll think about it.

I can’t promise any of this, because of that time of the year where you’re so busy you get no sleep. If I need to step out to take care of myself, I won’t hesitate to do so.

I’m quitting Tumblr

I’m making the decision to leave Tumblr. @staff @support

Having been on Tumblr since 2010, I never really thought about when this day would come, but now more than ever, I don’t see why not. 

It has been a great journey, I won’t forget that. From writing little poems to writing more about my personal experiences to reblogging Cyanide and Happiness comics, to memes, dogs,  motivational quotes, inspirational images and building a positive community of my own, it felt so empowering and gave me something to look forward to during my high school and my college years. 

It was addictive. It felt rewarding when I was featured on Tumblr’s “radar”- hand-picked showcase of creative, interesting, and awesome posts. It was my go-to mood booster. I read up on news, learned new terms, saved a ton of hilarious, fun gifs (back when Tumblr did not have a button to easily look up gifs and what not), became heavily invested in social justice issues, posted my ideas, learnings, what I stand for, and have people thank me and my blog for existing.   

I connected with other people from all over the world. I met up with two of my Tumblr friends in person. I could share my thoughts, genuine interests, and have it liked and reblogged by thousands? It felt like a platform I was never ever going to see myself exit from. 

Until the start of this year. I don’t feel safe on Tumblr.

On December 17, 2018, Tumblr’s ban on adult content went into effect (after the fact that Tumblr’s official app was removed from Apple’s App Store over the discovery of child pornography on the site). That meant that all pictures, GIFs, and videos that feature erotic content will be removed from the site. 

A reblogged photo from back in 2011 of a newborn’s feet was flagged but when a porn blog (blacksinasian) decides to share my (fully clothed) self portraits and write crude things on it, impersonate me in writing those things to lead people to my Tumblr and social media- that is not okay. 

I had to find out through Instagram DMs when some people let me know that they saw me on Tumblr, asked if I had Tumblr and if I knew that my pictures were being circulated on Tumblr. 

This is screwed up on so many levels. I never agreed to allow my content to be used in this way. The blog decided to repeatedly take my content and twist it in their own nasty words. 

This is unwanted harassment and violation of community guidelines, but Tumblr decides to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. 

I sent in a support request January 21, 2019. I received NO reply whatsoever and followed up on February 5, 2019 to which I receive a reply to on February 11, 2019 with the following:

Thank you for writing in. It sounds like you may be reporting a violation of our Community Guidelines instead of a technical issue on the site. In order to more quickly and efficiently handle this, we ask that you use our online Abuse forms located here:

That was a slap in the face. It was a response that was like, oh, seems like you sent in your request to the wrong department, here, try again, I won’t bother reading your request and helping you to route it to the right place and resolve it ASAP. That was terrible customer service for someone who has been a loyal user since 2010. Thanks a lot, Justin. Or as you called yourself in the email, Jay. 

After reporting abuse and writing the description of the abuse AGAIN, I received an automatic message from Tumblr Trust & Safety with the below message:

Gee, thank you so darn much. Can you tell me something actually valuable in less words? The fact that Tumblr could not give less of a crap about this shows just how hopeless Tumblr is. Take a hard look at your own Community Guidelines  and tell me that you’ve done everything you can to uphold all of that. Theblacksinasian blog clearly violated some of these guidelines and they’re still out there, posting away. No suspended account, no consequences. And I’m left here spending countless amount of time and effort in writing something that Tumblr will most likely ignore for the umpteenth time. 

Yeah sure, thank you for being the platform from which I got to experience laughs, meaningful conversations, humor, and encouragement. That can be found elsewhere. This just isn’t worth it.

Hey...I few years ago, I put all my energy in to a spell to get myself somewhere I wanted to be. A very specific job. I got it shortly after and used to be so happy, like I had made it. But now, it has just ripped pieces from me left and right and is draining me of all my energy. Do you have any idea of "Get back on track spellwork?"
