One of the last Morrigan
Tumblr media
This one is one I've been thinking about for a while. Let me know what you think. Love shifter stories.
You were a Morrigan, one of the last. When you were little, your parents would tell you stories of druids and elves working with your people centuries ago, Of a bloodline Shannara and how they always were defenders of your kind. Over time though, they were hunted down and killed. Only a handful were left alive and they hid, constantly moving from place to place. You were twelve when you and your parents were found. They had given up their lives to save you, give you time to escape. From that moment, you never stopped moving, never trusted any race. Most of the time, you stayed in your horse form. With a coat so black it was almost blue, long wavy mane and tail, you were tall and built like an Andulusian. Though your speed and endurance was unmatched by any other horse. The only mark that stood out was a pure silver/white crescent moon near your ear on your forehead. Through the next ten years, you would spend time with small herds of wild horses for a small time before moving on again. You had constant wanderlust, always getting twitchy and antsy if you stayed in one area too long.
You had just recently found your way to a large forest that you spent time exploring. There was a small beautiful meadow that you were grazing in when you heard a snap. Your head shot up, ears shifting towards the noise, eyes alert. Taking deep breaths, trying to smell anything on the breeze.
There was movement out of the corner of your eye to the right, flicking your tail as you quickly shifted to look. A young looking man, tall and thin was wandering through the woods, leading a chestnut horse behind him. You slowly and as quietly as you could, moved towards the edge of the meadow, trying to get out of site. The young man stopped and looked over when your hoof hit a small rock, clacking against it. Bright clear blue eyes connected with yours before glancing over you and then the area around you. When he didn’t see any sign of a person around he slowly took a few steps towards you. Snorting loudly, stomping your hoof in warning, he stopped. “I’m not going to hurt you.” His voice was deep and smooth. Something about it calmed some of your frayed nerves though you weren’t sure why. Wil watched you for a few moments before he slowly went back to his collecting of healing plants and herbs. He kept an eye on you the entire time. This man was not trying to outright catch you or hurt you. So you decided to just stay along the edge of the meadow and watch him. You wickered a hello to his horse who responded happily. She was relaxed and calm. Over the next hour, Wil continued his gathering while you very slowly inched closer to him, trying to find out whatever you could about him. The few times you caught his scent, it was unique, nothing you had ever smelled before. Most beings had a general scent. Rovers always had a slightly sweaty smell to them. Trolls were sour and the few gnomes you came across smelled like soil. This man smelled like pine and rain with something you couldn’t identify. By the time Wil was just about done gathering what he needed, you were maybe fifteen feet away from him, ears and eyes locked on him. A small smile filled his face as he put the last of the plants in his saddlebag before pulling out some bread, dried meat and an apple. He sat down on the edge of the meadow, leaning against a tree while letting his horse graze. When he finished his bread and meat, he grabbed the apple off his lap and took a bite. Your eyes shot to the apple when you smelled the sweet scent on the soft breeze. You could feel your mouth water some, lips twitching some. He held the apple out to you, eyes soft. A small sound left you as you tossed your head up. Take the apple from him? He was out of his mind. You would never get that close to anyone. Stomping a hoof, you turned so your side was to him, leaning your head down and taking a mouthful of sweet grass. Flicking your tail while chewing, you watched him out of the corner of your eye. When the man stood, you took a few steps away from him. Wil moved to his horse, pulled another apple out of his bag. He gently tossed it to you before taking another few bites of his apple before letting Cricket eat the rest. She chomped happily on it. Taking the few steps to the apple on the ground, you sniffed it before deciding to take a bite. Within moments the apple was mostly gone, mouth watering from how tasty and sweet it was. It had been a long time since you had an apple. Once Cricket had finished her apple, he started to guide her back the way they had come from. He didn’t even glance back, that was what had you following at a distance. No one had done this, they had all tried to catch and tame you, cage you or chase you off. When he reached the edge of the forest, he mounted Cricket and when he saw you, a smile formed. “What a beauty you are Ebony.” He said, “I hope to see you again soon.” With that, he turned Cricket and started off.
The further off he rode, you felt a clench in your gut. It wasn’t until he was just a dot on the horizon that you made a reckless decision. You took off after, mane and tail flowing in the wind as you covered ground quickly. When you came to the top of the hill you had last seen him on, you slowed to a stop. Off in the distance you could make out a small house/hut, and this strange young man was riding towards it. You moved down the hill towards a stream you could hear, deciding to wait to get any closer. You watched when he slid off his horse, took the saddle and bridle off before brushing her. Then when he turned her out into her pasture, he moved into the house.
Over the next few days you watched while he worked around the land, making trips on Cricket. Everything was done with care and patience. On the evening of the third day, you made your way towards the pasture Cricket was in. When she saw you she whinnied out to you. Wil poked his head outside when he heard her. His eyes caught movement in the darkness, he could see your shape, your coat darker than the night. ‘Well looks like someone made a friend,’ Wil thought, happy to see both of you interacting. The next day, when Wil was feeding Cricket, he left out a small amount of grain and a pail of water for you. When you stumbled upon them, you tipped the water over, not trusting it. Also barely nibbling on the grain. Always staying a distance from him whenever he was outside. When he would see the knocked over pail he would just smile and refill it. Finally on the fifth day, you started to drink the water he left, eating all the grain. There were times he would just sit outside under the tree by the house and read. One time he had dozed off, you decided to be gutsy. Silently as possible, you moved over towards him. When you did reach him, you just looked him over. His face was so innocent and young looking. It was then that you decided to give him the smallest of chances. You gently nipped the book off his chest and backed up a few steps before dropping it, flicking your tail before nickering at him. Blue eyes shot open and he leaned up on his elbows, not sure what was going on. Rubbing his eyes, he reached for his book. When he didn’t feel it, he looked around, eyes catching you standing a few feet from him, his book at your feet.
“Trouble maker huh?” He asked with a soft laugh, his voice gravely with sleep. When he reached out for his book, you pranced back away from him and swished your tail again. This became something you loved to do, whenever he would nap under the tree, you would nab his book and drop it a few feet away from him. The one time he didn’t have a book, you got a mischievous glint in your eye. You gently, and very slowly, nibbled his hat off his head, blond hair sticking out as you backed up with it. With a soft nicker, he was soon awake. When he sat up, you finally noticed his ears. He was an elf! No wonder he was kind, maybe that is why he smelled the way he did. Is that what elves smelled like? Before he could move, you slowly, tentatively moved towards him. Your ears were twitching, muscles tensed ready to bolt if need be. When you got close enough, you dropped the hat by his side. Wil watched, pleasantly surprised at the courage you were showing. Slowly, he turned his hand over in his lap, so it was palm up then just waited. It took a few minutes before you slowly lowered your head, pressing your nose into his hand. It was that day that you began to slowly trust him more and more, letting him get closer to you and having small strokes on your neck.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A week later you noticed that he wasn’t outside as much, and when he was, it was to do the chores quickly. Here and there he would take off on cricket and return hours later, rushing inside with some pouch of something or another. One day, he took off on Cricket and when he finally returned, she had barely stopped before he was running into the house. It was a few hours later that he slowly emerged and put Cricket back in her pasture for the night. His eyes were puffy and red. A sniffle would leave him every now and then. Once he finished, he moved to the tree, sinking to the ground, arms curling around his legs and burying his face in his knees. Moving over to him slowly, you gently lip some of his hair before touching your nose to his shoulder. Within moments, his arms were up around your neck, crying into you. You carefully curled your front leg under and laid down, wanting to comfort him any way you could. The rest of that day, you were never too far from him.
📍Andalusian Garden in Cairo . Egypt 🇪🇬 One of several formal gardens in the Gezira area that are popular strolling spots for couples in the evening. This one’s small, but adjacent to the Nile, and also nice during the day as it has plenty of shade from palm trees and vine-covered pergolas. Across Midan Saad Zaghloul, on the southwest side, is the entrance to the grandly named Garden of Freedom and Friendship, much larger but without the river views. #andulusia #andulusian #garden #cairo #andalusia #egypt #egyptpassion #iregipto #park
TAFAKKUR: Part 428
AL-ANDALUS: THE LOST CIVILIZATION
How many people now know who Ibn Hazm, Al-Mu’tamid, Ibn Tufayl, Abu Ishaq al-Butruji were, or even where they came from? Most probably, not many. Yet these were among the most important scientists and thinkers of their age and lived in Al-Andalus.
The year 1492 has long been a historical landmark: the Americans recently celebrated the 500th anniversary of Columbus’s ‘discovery’ of the new continent. But there was another 500th anniversary to be marked in 1992. Although this event was also of momentous importance for the history of mankind, it has attracted much less attention. The event we are referring to was the fall of the last Muslim city left in Spain: Granada. The date was the second day of 1492 when the Catholic king of Castile captured the city which had been governed for nearly eight centuries by Muslims.
The Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, which marked one of the most magnificent and glorious periods in Islamic history began with an invitation from one side of a civil war then raging in Visigothic Spain in 711. Musa Ibn Nusayr, the Umayyad governor of North Africa, was asked to help the rival of a Visigoth king. Thereupon, Nusayr ordered his general Tariq Ibn Ziyad to aid these people with an army of 7,000. In the following years he himself went to Spain. Within seven years the Muslims took control of the whole of the Peninsula, except for Galicia and Austuria. Muslim rule was accepted voluntarily by many Spaniards and over time some of them accepted Islam. The Andalusian Muslims did little to disturb the natives and allowed them to perform their religions and customs. After the dissolution of the central Umayyad government between 1009 and 1031 as a result of uprisings and a succession of weak rulers, a number of independent petty kingdoms (in Arabic mutluk al-tawaif and in Spanish taifa) became established. In spite of the fact that these little kingdoms were weaker than the former Umayyad state, an astonishing flowering of arts and learning took place during the taifa period. One reason for this outstanding development was that each ruler patronized artists, scholars and scientists to gain more prestige than the others. Eventually, the absence of a centrally organized state led to the end of Muslims’ power in the Peninsula. They lost considerable areas of territory to the Christian kingdoms that were reasserting themselves in the north. The petty kingdoms of Al-Andalus asked Yusuf Ibn Tashufin, the Almoravid (in Arabic al-Murabitun) ruler in Morocco, to intervene. They got the help they needed, but in 1090, the Almovarids left the country to its own destiny. This time the taifa kingdoms asked the Almohads (in Arabic al-Muwahhidun) for help. The Almohads willingly accepted and for a period of time they won some success in Spain. Nevertheless, in 1212 at the battle of al-Iqab they were defeated and within a few decades the Almohads were forced back across the Strait of Gibraltar. Muslim cities fell one after another until 1260, when only the kingdom of Granada remained. Granada survived for another two centuries. By the end of 1491, the armies of Ferdinand and Isabella were at the gates of the city. There remained only one final act to be played out on January 2nd, 1492 by which Muslim political sovereignty in Spain came to an end. In 1500, Spanish Muslims were presented with a terrible choice–either to convert to Catholicism or be expelled from Spain. Some did convert, others continued to practice their faith in secret and the rest chose exile.
It is a fact that the Andulusians developed a uniquely plural society whose main features were freedom, tolerance and lack of assimilation–Arabs, Christians, Jews and other immigrants lived side by side in peace for about eight centuries. Cordoba, the capital city of Al-Andalus, was the centre of a sophisticated and rich Islamic-Hispanic civilisation. In its heyday, Cordoba was famous for its intellectually advanced culture, its centres of learning and its great libraries. In those years, there were about one million people, 200,000 houses, 60 palaces, 600 mosques, 700 baths, 17 universities and 70 public libraries in the city. The biggest central library of Cordoba had 400,000 hand-written books and the catalogues which included only the names of the books consisted of 44 volumes. The famous orientalist, Dozy, stated that nearly all the people in Cordoba could read and write.
Gebert of Aurillac, the French monk, later to become Pope Sylvester II, was the first European scholar of importance to study Arabic sciences. He was also responsible for sending many teams of students into Al-Andalus during the closing years of the 10th century. By the end of that century, the various schools in Cordoba employed hundreds of students as translators and just as many copyists working closely to interpret and translate hundreds, perhaps thousands, of manuscripts from Baghdad and Cairo. Through these translations, philosophical and scientific thought from the Greek, Roman and Arab worlds, preserved and expanded upon by Muslim scholars, passed into European consciousness to fuel both the Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment. Western Europe, in general, owes a great debt to this enormously long and rich intellectual flow from Al-Andalus.
Islamic Spain was an immensely fertile ground for learning, producing a long series of intellectual, aesthetic and scientific advances attributable to Muslim, Christian and Jewish thinkers and the ethos they created. This blossoming was due in part to the spirit of tolerance that prevailed for much of the history of Al-Andalus.
In literature, Ibn Hazm (died in 1013) expanded traditional romantic poetry with his Tawq al-Hamamah (Dove’s necklace). This form of poetry passed from Al-Andalus into North Africa. Islamic literature in Andalus, however, reached its peak during the taifa era when the poet-king of Seville, Al-Mutamid, established an academy of letters, and Ibn Darraj al-Qastalli wrote a series of qasaid (poems) of unequalled beauty.
By the end of 11th century, Al-Andalus was at the forefront of European sciences. The Andalusians excelled in astronomy, both theoretical and practical, perfecting their tables and the precision of their astronomical instruments. Toledo astronomer Al-Zargali, (d. 1087), simplified the Hellenic astrolabe; his version, known as the saphea azarchelis, remained in use until the 16th century. He also anticipated the 17th century German astronomer Johannes Kepler in suggesting that the orbits of the planets are not circular but elliptical.
In medicine, Al-Andalus produced scholars like Al-Zahrawi (d. 1013), who wrote extensively on surgery, pharmacology, medical ethics and the doctor-patient relationship. Ibn Zuhr (known in the west as Avenzoar), a century and a half later, was an advocate of clinical research and practical experimentation. The first medical school in Europe was built in Salerno by Andalusians.
Abdullah Ibn Abdulaziz was one of the best-known geographers and renowned for his great work Al-Masalik wa’l-Mamalik (Roads and Countries). Another important geographer was Al-Idrisi who was educated in Cordoba and wrote Kitab al-Rujari (Roger’s Book) under the patronage of the King of Sicily, Roger II. In this book he divided the world into seven different climatic regions and each region into ten parts. He illustrated his book with some outstanding maps remarkable (and unique) for their accuracy.
Andalusians were also very successful in mathematics, especially geometry. They used the number ‘0’ for the first time in Europe. Among the well-known philosophers who lived in Andalus were Ibn Bajja, Ibn Tufayl and Ibn Rushd all of whom influenced European thought very profoundly. Abu Bakr Ibn Umar, Abu Marwan, Ibn Fradi were particularly famous in historical studies.
Although, over the years, the lost splendour of Al-Andalus has been much idealized in the Islamic world, there remains an appreciation of the factors behind its downfall. Some of these were external, such as the unification and expansion of the Christian kingdoms of Spain and the geographic and political isolation of Al-Andalus from the rest of the Muslim world. There were also internal factors that contributed to the decline of Al-Andalus particularly the rivalries that weakened and divided Muslim Spain, the greed and self-indulgence that gripped its elites, and the loss of inner religious dynamic.
1/17/2020: Reshelling Seafoam
Okay so there is likely a term for this that isn’t BJD related but since I’m in the BJD community and I don’t know what the actual term is, I’m just gonna call it reshelling.
When I first started playing Star Stable Online in 2016, I got the first nice looking white horse I could find which was the Lipizzaner horse and I made him Angelwater. While Farlove is Veronika’s soulhorse in game, Seafoam is Nika’s Soulhorse in her actual universe of fiction. I did not have the heart to reshell Farlove and the Jorvik Starters aren’t really what I’m going for with Seamfoam anyway so I had to make due! At the time, there wasn’t a whole lot of variety because SSO was at the beginning of their major overhaul of horsie effects and distinction - at least from my perspective - and you couldn’t even use Sea as the first part of a horse name - at least with the options I was provided - so I both couldn’t get his name close to who he was and honestly he didn’t look like his character. This was all rough, but manageable to take in.
Seafoam is supposed to super represent his name. His original story had him in a fantasy world as a breed of beach horse that was powerful, gorgeous but very hard to settle and tame because of their independent natures. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Lippizaner model - but I have been planning to “reshell” him or move him to another character model the moment I could. The Andulusian model was spot on. It’s got this gorgeous, baywatch hair, the expressiveness (albeit I do think the animations for the Andulusian model give me the impression that the horse is a bit of a goofball LMAO) and the more brilliance in the coat. It’s exactly what I have been looking for for Seafoam!
In the pictures, top left is new Seafoam and top right is old! The rest are all beauty shots of this new handsome boy!
Are the dragons dragons in your AU?
No, I thought about it, but I really want to keep as much of a “Red Dead Redemption” vibe as possible. All the dragons are going to be different horse breeds from the game.
(next part is me being incredibly self-indulgent feel free to skip)
Toothless is a solid black Arabian. He’s smaller than the other horses, but he’s the fastest by far. He also has a long, thick scar on his back left leg from where Hiccup accidentally mangled him.
Stormfly is a blue and blonde Missouri Fox Trotter
Meatlug and Grump are brown Shires
Hookfang is a red mustang
Barf and Belch are brown, red, and gold spotted Appaloosa horses
Cloudjumper is a brown Andulusian
Viggo has a grey Turkoman named Skrill.
That’s all I know right now, as I’m largely just drafting and outlining things in the hopes that I will actually be able to write a coherent story.
