Jeff Buckley: Sketches (For My Sweetheart The Drunk) (Columbia)
Jim Irvin, MOJO, June 1998
FANS OF Grace might find this album tough going. For one thing, it's hard to divorce the circumstances of its existence from the music – some of which is very beautiful, yet you know it wouldn't sound this way if Jeff Buckley had lived. In other words, you're listening to this record because he died.
Secondly, there are several moments that seem too private, things we probably shouldn't be hearing. At these times you might experience the same uneasy fascination you'd get from illicitly reading someone's diary. You might also find yourself distracted by questions like, "Who chose this running order?", "Why are there two versions of two songs with nothing much to choose between them?" or "Was this song finished?"
We'll never know if Jeff Buckley wanted anybody to hear the ugly clutter of ‘Haven't You Heard’, we can be certain he had more in mind for the complex ‘Murder Suicide Meteor Slave’ than the detuned, trebly mush it is here and we can only wonder at how its lovely Beatle-ish interlude would have turned out. Did he lay down the home-made cover of ‘Back In New York City’ (a Genesis song from The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway) with a view to putting it on record or simply for his own amusement, something to get the creative juices flowing? Is there any real value in hearing tracks as nascent as ‘Demon John’ or ‘Your Flesh Is So Nice’ – barely written songs, with arrangements just hinted at by slapdash guitars and extemporised melodies you know he'd have nailed later or abandoned completely? Is it right to include performances where his singing is unfocused, lazy or tired? Or those where the band are just feeling their way?
As I understand it, from talking to his management shortly after his death, Jeff Buckley's unreleased legacy runs thus: the remainder of the Live At Sin-E recordings; radio sessions and solo spots such as those on the French ‘Live At The Bataclan’ EP (which he hated); one outtake from Grace, ‘Forget Her’ (removed to make room for ‘So Real’); the "live in the studio" solo sets recorded during the making of Grace; a series of 24-track live recordings with the full band (some of these, like the extended version of Alex Chilton's ‘Kanga-Roo’, have appeared on B-sides and promo discs); the sessions recorded with Tom Verlaine in Memphis a few months before his death; a few tracks recorded in New York soon afterwards; and a large number of 4-track demos Buckley cut in the last weeks of his life.
After he drowned, the inevitable question of what to do with this material had to be faced. Manager Dave Lory spent days going through the tapes found in Jeff's house. He had to listen to everything, no matter what it said on the box, as Jeff had a habit of cutting demos on whatever came to hand. Sure enough, he found one new song halfway through side two of an old Michael Bolton promo cassette.
He then met up with Steve Berkowitz (Jeff's A&R man) and Andy Wallace (the producer of Grace), to make a definitive inventory of all the extant recordings and dub the demos onto digital masters. These were three of the men who knew Jeff's working methods best and they argued every day about what might be done with this stuff, which songs Jeff would have been happy with, how best to release the material or, indeed, if any of it should come out at all.
Just as they were finishing this process, they were 'fired' by Jeff's mother, Mary Guibert, who'd inherited her son's estate and assumed the responsibility of compiling an album with another Columbia A&R executive, Don DeVito, (who'd not worked extensively with Buckley while he was alive). They asked Buckley's friend, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, to "sit in Jeff's seat". Andy Wallace was rehired to complete his mixes of the Verlaine sessions which make up Disc 1 of this collection.
When Buckley completed those tracks he told Lory that he "couldn't find his soul" in them. He was aware there was a lot of work still to do before he could cut a worthy follow-up to Grace, so he temporarily dismissed his band and retreated to his rented house in Memphis to revise the songs and write new ones. (Some of these, ‘Mood Swing Whiskey’, ‘Sky Blue Skin’, ‘Don't Listen To Anyone But Me’, ‘Woke Up In A Strange Place’ and ‘Let's Bomb The Moonlight’ remain in the can.) Disc 2 features seven of those demos, retakes of two of the songs on Disc 1, some CD-ROM material (which was not available for review) and a stray radio recording from 1992 of the country standard ‘Satisfied Mind’ ("I went with a satisfied mind"), clearly chosen as a pointed closer.
Diametrically opposed to it, Disc 1's opener, ‘The Sky Is A Landfill’, is a bleak, relentless torrent of anger. As "evil blacks the sky" Buckley advises that we "Don't suck the milk of flaccid Bill K Public's empty promise to the people". "This way of life is so devised to snuff out the mind that moves," he continues, moved to send a mail bomb to "Mr Strong Arm", who is "useless like the cops at the scene of a crime" Although impressive, it's a curious track to open with, throwing a grim shadow over what follows. It takes a few listens, then, but gradually Sketches' pearls begin to shine through.
‘Vancouver’ kicks off with a Byrdsian riff and a beautiful double-tracked falsetto, spinning into a dizzy song driven by piano, fuzz bass and crashing guitars. ‘Nightmares By The Sea’ is great, too. After an intro reminiscent of Nirvana's ‘Come As You Are’, it turns into a churning pop song – and check the lyrics: "Stay with me under these waves tonight/Be free for once in your life tonight! Bluebeard's young and handsome/So new to your bedroom floor/You know damn well where you're gone." Likewise, the a cappella ‘You And I’ (again, a song whose melody was not fully developed) starts with the line "Oh, the calm below that poisoned river wild". It can't be too long before someone ekes out a morbid dissertation concerning the water imagery in these songs.
However, it's the second track that will be this collection's calling card. ‘Everybody Here Wants You’ draws from the same divine well as ‘Lover, You Should've Come Over’ on Grace. It's a lump-in-the-throat soul ballad which sways like Smokey Robinson's ‘Cruisin'’ or Chic's ‘At Last I Am Free’. Jeff sings it in a tender falsetto with a hint of jealous ire shading the delicious, pleading chorus – "Everybody here wants you! Everybody here thinks he needs you/I'll be waiting right here just to show you our love will blow it all away" – as the bass tumbles along lyrically. Awkward middle-four aside, it's an instant classic. And it serves to make the lesser tracks here an even greater source of sadness, simultaneously reminding us that this wonderful voice has sung its last.
There's a lot of fine material still unheard and we must hope its trustees are careful with it. One thing's sure: a definitive selection will never exist, except in our heads and, one day perhaps, on our personal 'Ultimate Jeff' compilations.
At best, Sketches has much the same function and effect as The Beatles Anthology collections. It's a document of a great musical mind cranking into gear, a series of clues to what might have been. If you were hoping for a record to equal Grace, well, you'll be disappointed. But be assured that Jeff Buckley's sketches overshadow most artists' completed works.

Two passions of mine are lists and family trees/next generations. One of my bigger gripes with the Fandom Wiki is that they will put absolutely everything to be a character category... aside from “next generation”...
So, I’m making my own list of next generation characters from all over the multiverse. Which is ungrateful, to be quite frank, due to how hard they are to find if you haven’t met them personally in a comic yet.
Which brings us to this post. Consider it a WIP as well as an ask for help. If you are as interested in next gen characters as I am, look at the shiny list! If you have read comics including next gen characters not listed here, please tell me the source and name so I can add them!
(Listed in braces behind are home Earth and continuity; if nothing is listed, it’s a child from the main continuity. Also, the list is in alphabetical order by hero alias, so if you want to just check a particular hero, that’s where you’ll find them.)

We’ve known for a while that the latest installment in the Planet of the Apes franchise took place a least a few decades after the last trilogy of films, which ended with 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes. Today we found out, however, that this movie isn’t decades in the future, but centuries.
According to Empire, the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, directed by Wes Ball, will take place 300 years in the future. That means that the protagonist of the three recent films—Caesar (Andy Serkis)—is long gone, and his legacy is largely forgotten.
“Noa has no idea who that is,” Owen Teague told Empire, referring to his starring character, the ape who has to rediscover Caesar’s teachings about apes working together. “Part of his journey is a discovery of that legacy and its various interpretations. Noa has to make sense of what it all means.”
There is a character named Caesar in the movie—an ape who apparently remembered the original’s teachings and takes the name Proximus Caesar, though Empire warns that the character doesn’t have the betterment of ape-kind at heart.
“Caesar is almost a religious figure, and Proximus has taken on the name Caesar because it was the highest position held in ape society,” said Kevin Durand, who plays Proximus. “It was a self-proclamation that was achieved by any means necessary, to ensure that apes continue to evolve. So you’re seeing the influence and the evolution of what Caesar left. And, like in every morsel of human history, there’s always some type of tyrant who comes along and scares everyone into believing them.”
This upcoming film, as Ball told Empire, is also just the first installment of a new story. “From the beginning, we thought about this as a trilogy,” he said.
He added: “Those last three movies were about the end of something. They were about the end of this Moses story. They were about the end of humanity,” he explained. “And we thought, ‘From the ashes of those previous movies, we’re gonna grow a new tree to climb.’ This movie is very much about the beginning of something.”
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes premieres in theaters on May 24, 2024.

Okay I'm having some messy thoughts, but I really need to think aloud here.
Werewolf by Night, to some degree, is about family and the legacies it carries.
First we have Elsa, a member of the Bloodstone family that is essentially an outcast. Originally destined to inherit the bloodstone, she's now forced to compete with the other hunters for it. We don't get full details why she left or how she left (though in most of the movie we have a lot of context missing, for the best in my opinion). We just know she did and she's estranged. No longer worthy enough as a daughter or no longer enough of a daughter to be worthy enough for the stone.
But still she fights for it and claims that it is rightfully hers.
Then we have Jack. Jack arrives to what he likely assumes to be a normal funeral (I say this because while the other hunters appeared in hunting gear, he wore a dark, probably black, suit (EDIT: it's not black, but it's still a suit)) wearing Dia de los Muertos makeup. Makeup that is best described in the scene where he says it's to honor his ancestors. Interestingly, the other hunter he speaks to is a little.. dismissive towards that reasoning, let's say. Jack, based on facial expressions alone, is put off by that, but doesn't say much.
Later when he's stuck with Elsa, he discusses family. Saying that family is like an atmosphere constantly there. Saying that sometimes you think you can do one thing to make yourself different from them. Obviously this is directed towards Elsa who is currently sitting in front of her dead relatives. Who's trying to get the bloodstone herself for... whatever reason. Clearly she's not involved with her father anymore. Maybe this is thing that she'll change? Maybe she'll break the cycle by having the bloodstone and... what? Does she know?
And what about Jack. He's literally saying all this in Dia de los Muertos makeup!! In the comics, the werewolf curse is something he received through lineage. So is that the cycle he's trapped in? To be the monster his family made him? After centuries (?) of living, he's still not at peace with this curse. Maybe he's just given up on trying to fix any of it. Maybe he's trying to get Elsa to see something he thinks he's already figured out.
Oh, and the cage scene. He says "once". Not to bring in comics again But. Do you think that once was his sister? He clearly holds the memory close enough that he immediately tries to use it to protect Elsa. This is something he dwells on constantly. He just knew to try to repeat it the moment he realized the danger.
Elsa gets the bloodstone like she wanted. He doesn't kill Elsa like he feared he would. He frees Ted, the person he references as family and later a friend. Did they get that one change he was talking about? Can they break the cycle? Do the even know what part of the cycle they're trying to break?
... I can't help but think about how his makeup is almost completely faded at the end of the film.

Ron Howard Net Worth: Unveiling the Wealth of a Hollywood Legend
Tumblr media
Ron Howard—a name synonymous with Hollywood greatness! Whether it's his early days as Opie Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show or his directorial triumphs in films like Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind, Howard has cemented his legacy in the entertainment industry. But what about Ron Howard's net worth? How has this multi-talented actor, director, and producer accumulated his wealth over decades in showbiz? Let's dive in to explore the journey of Ron Howard's financial empire and how he built his staggering net worth.
The Humble Beginnings of a Future Hollywood Mogul
Before we get into the nitty-gritty of Ron Howard's net worth, it's important to understand where it all began. Ron Howard started as a child actor, starring in The Andy Griffith Show in the 1960s. As Opie, he won the hearts of millions, but few could have predicted the meteoric rise that lay ahead.
From Child Star to Blockbuster Director
What sets Ron Howard apart from many child stars is his seamless transition into adulthood. He didn't just fade into obscurity—he reinvented himself as a powerhouse director. By the late '70s and early '80s, Howard had left his mark behind the camera, directing fan-favorites like Splash and Cocoon. These films weren’t just box-office hits—they contributed significantly to building Ron Howard’s net worth.
Climbing the Hollywood Ladder
Success didn’t come overnight, but when it did, it was huge! Howard's directorial efforts paid off handsomely, as he took on more complex and award-winning projects. Films like Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind didn’t just earn accolades; they also raked in millions at the box office. And with each successful project, Ron Howard’s net worth soared higher and higher.
Breaking Down Ron Howard's Financial Empire
So, how does Ron Howard's net worth break down? Let's have a look at some of the key sources contributing to his wealth:
Film Directing: Howard has directed numerous box-office blockbusters. Films like Apollo 13 ($355 million worldwide) and The Da Vinci Code ($760 million worldwide) have made significant contributions to his fortune.
Production Work: In 1986, Ron Howard co-founded Imagine Entertainment, a production company responsible for hits like Arrested Development, 24, and Friday Night Lights. This move alone has dramatically increased his net worth.
Acting Career: Though primarily known for his directing, Howard hasn’t left acting behind completely. His roles in TV shows and movies also provide a consistent revenue stream.
Key Figures and Assets
Wondering how much Ron Howard's net worth is? Various sources estimate that it hovers around $200 million. Here’s a breakdown of how his assets contribute to this:
Real Estate: Howard owns several luxury properties, including a $27.5 million estate in Connecticut and a Manhattan apartment.
Investment Ventures: Howard has wisely invested in different sectors, including the entertainment industry and tech startups.
What Keeps Ron Howard’s Net Worth Growing?
While many in Hollywood struggle to maintain their fortune, Ron Howard's net worth continues to grow. How? For one, he’s not just sitting back and enjoying the fruits of his labor. Howard is an active player in the film industry, constantly taking on new projects and exploring innovative ways to bring stories to life. Whether it's producing, directing, or even narrating (Arrested Development, anyone?), he’s always up to something exciting.
The Power of Imagine Entertainment
Co-founding Imagine Entertainment was a game-changer for Howard. The production company produces a steady stream of successful films and TV shows, ensuring a constant income flow. It's a big reason why Ron Howard's net worth keeps climbing.
Awards and Accolades
Ron Howard isn't just wealthy; he's also highly respected. His mantle must be overflowing with awards! Here are a few notable ones:
Academy Award for Best Director for A Beautiful Mind
Primetime Emmy Awards for Arrested Development and From the Earth to the Moon
These achievements have not only elevated his status but have also boosted his earning potential.
Ron Howard's Net Worth Compared to Other Directors
When you think of directors like Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, or Quentin Tarantino, it's natural to wonder how Ron Howard stacks up financially. While his $200 million net worth might seem modest compared to Spielberg's billions, Howard is still one of the wealthiest directors in Hollywood. After all, how many people can claim to have a net worth in the nine-figure range?
What Does the Future Hold for Ron Howard?
With his talent, experience, and relentless work ethic, there’s no doubt Ron Howard will continue to grow his wealth. Upcoming projects, collaborations, and his production company all indicate that his financial empire is far from shrinking. It’s safe to say that Ron Howard’s net worth will continue to flourish for years to come.
Conclusion
Ron Howard's net worth isn't just the result of luck or being in the right place at the right time. It's the culmination of decades of hard work, dedication, and smart business decisions. From his early days as a child actor to his current status as one of Hollywood’s most respected directors, Howard has consistently reinvented himself, ensuring that his career—and his fortune—remain in top shape.
So, what's Ron Howard’s net worth? Well, as of now, it stands at an impressive $200 million, but something tells us it's only going to grow. Stay tuned to see what this Hollywood legend does next!

The X-Men #24
Lovely.
Aftermath of UNCANNY X-MEN 303.
This script is mostly about three couples: Scott & Jean, Sean & Moira, Gambit & Rogue. All of their scenes are lovely. It works. All of it.
Away from that, the stuff with Kwannon and Psylocke still isn't particularly interesting but the Jubilee moments are great. And the foreshadowing about the Legacy Virus is simply excellent. It genuinely feels as if something really bad is coming.
Wizard Top 100: #7.
Fabian Nicieza (14 of 43).
Andy Kubert (10 of 40).

If any album deserves a 10th-anniversary reissue treatment, it's Jeff Buckley's "Grace." Along with Nirvana's "Nevermind," it set the tone for much of the '90s. Anchored by Buckley's incredibly expressive voice and guitar playing, the album spanned the rock, folk and blues genres and influenced countless bands. Buckley's plaintive vocals and yearning lyrics were given additional emotional resonance upon his drowning in 1997, making "Grace" his only proper full-length album. In addition to a remastered edition of the album, the Legacy Edition contains a bonus disc of live and previously unreleased material. While the highlight is "new" original track "Forget Her," it is fun to hear Buckley tackle songs by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Hank Williams and MC5 as well. Also included is a third disc, which includes a DVD of the making of this landmark album, and five music videos.

Jeff Buckley: Grace Legacy Edition
Author: Jimmy Leslie
Date: Aug. 2005
Jeff Buckley was the guitar player's singer/songwriter, and Grace was his masterwork. Jimmy Page called it, "the best thing I've heard all year" in 1994, and it stands as one of the decade's most influential albums. Underneath Buckley's soaring vocals and romantic songwriting was a beautiful bed of Telecaster tones drenched in delicious Fender reverb. Unfortunately, Grace was the only studio album Buckley--the prodigal son of cult favorite Tim Buckley--fully realized before his tragic drowning death in 1997. The Legacy Edition of Grace sparkles in the light of a modern mastering job, and is accompanied by a disc of Grace-era rarities and a DVD. The most notable previously unreleased audio track is the fabled version of "Forget Her," recorded during the Grace sessions and featuring a rare overdriven guitar solo with string bends wrenched straight from the gut. Buckley brandishes authentic electric and acoustic slide blues chops on Hank Williams' "Lost Highway" and Bukka White's "Parchman Farm Blues" respectively, while the reworked "Eternal Life" and a cover of the MC5's "Kick Out the Jams" rock as hard as anything from the grunge era. The DVD contains an insightful "Making of Grace" segment, as well as five videos. Columbia.

Friday Review: Jeff Buckley Grace: Legacy Edition (Columbia/Legacy) 3/5 pounds 18.99
Date: Aug. 6, 2004
When Columbia's Legacy bods get the bit between their teeth, there's no stopping them, and this multimedia mega-pack edition of Jeff Buckley's shimmering epic, Grace, gives you both an additional CD of unreleased material and rarities, and a DVD with promo videos and an expanded version of the documentary, The Making of Grace. Buckley's disastrously early death rocketed him to a kind of instant canonisation, and there's so much Buckleyana on the market that it's easy to overlook the fact that Grace was the only full-length album released in his lifetime. So, since we already have the massive Legacy release Live At Sin-E, The Grace EPs, Live At L'Olympia etc, is this 10th anniversary disc mere overkill? Well, it gets away with it by virtue of the quality of the second CD, which packs in 13 tracks of mostly excellent quality. Must-hear moments include the mesmerising Forget Her (almost included on Grace but bumped in favour of So Real), the billowing soul-gospel of I Want Someone Badly, Buckley's disarming readings of Dylan's Mama, You Been on My Mind and Hank Williams's Lost Highway, and the nu-metal premonition of the "road version" of Eternal Life. But surely it wasn't necessary to get George Marino to remaster the original Grace album.
