The Westview farmers' market was alive with vibrant energy, the sound of cheerful chatter mingling with the scent of fresh produce, baked goods, and blooming flowers. Agatha strolled leisurely with Rio and Y/n, savoring the rare moments of peace and quiet their lives allowed.
Y/n's dark brown curls caught the sunlight as they bounced with her every step. She looked effortlessly ethereal in a flowing, earth-toned dress that swirled around her ankles. A shawl embroidered with delicate floral patterns draped loosely over her shoulders, lending her an air of timeless elegance. She had returned home for spring break from college, missing home more than she thought she would.
"Mama, I think we've bought enough honey to last us until the next millennium," Y/n teased, her arms laden with a basket overflowing with jars and small bags of herbs.
"Don't be ridiculous," Agatha replied, inspecting a bundle of lavender at a nearby stall. "It's not just for tea. Honey is a key ingredient for many spells, you know. Versatile, magical, delicious—what's not to love?"
Rio raised an eyebrow, smirking as she adjusted her sunglasses. "You said the same thing about the rosemary you insisted on buying last week. Have we even touched it since?"
Agatha gasped, clutching the lavender dramatically. "How dare you? Rosemary is sacred—an essential component of—"
"—of spells, you haven't cast yet," Rio finished, laughing softly.
Y/n rolled her eyes but smiled, clearly used to their playful banter. "You two are why we always need extra storage in the kitchen." She adjusted the strap of her basket and stopped at a stall selling handmade jewelry.
"Don't get distracted, cariño," Rio said, her tone teasing but warm. "We still need to find those herbs for your potion practice."
Y/n waved her off with a grin. "I can multitask, Mom. Besides, if I don't get this shopping gene from one of you, I'll break the family tradition."
Agatha chuckled, reaching out to pluck a piece of fabric off a vendor's table. "Oh, darling, it's not a gene. It's an art form. You'll learn."
The three meandered through the market, often chatting with vendors or admiring handmade goods. It was a perfect afternoon, the kind of day that made Westview feel like a sanctuary.
But peace, as always, was fleeting.
As they rounded a corner near a stand selling potted herbs, Agatha froze. The jovial conversation around them dulled in her ears, replaced by a sudden, sharp awareness.
Rio noticed immediately. She placed a steadying hand on Agatha's arm. "Sweetheart, what is it?"
Agatha's lips parted, her eyes narrowing as she scanned the crowd. "A presence," she said quietly. "One I haven't felt in... centuries."
Before Rio could press further, a voice drifted through the air, silken and cold.
"Agatha."
The three of them turned toward the sound, and there he was—Magnus. He stood a short distance away, his piercing gaze fixed on Agatha. Time seemed to have barely touched him. His dark hair was slicked back, his angular features sharp, and his long black coat tailored perfectly to his lean frame.
"Agatha," he said again, stepping closer. His voice was smooth, almost disarmingly so. "It's been too long."
Agatha straightened, her body rigid with tension. "Not long enough."
Magnus's smile widened, though it didn't reach his eyes. "Is that any way to greet an old... acquaintance?" His gaze shifted, falling on Rio, then Y/n. His expression faltered briefly when his eyes landed on Y/n.
"And who is this?" he asked, his voice taking on a curious lilt. "Your... daughter?"
Y/n stepped closer to Rio, her shawl slipping slightly off her shoulder. She tilted her head, studying the stranger with cautious curiosity. "Who's asking?"
Magnus chuckled, his dark eyes glinting with amusement. "Fiery. Just like your mother." He turned his attention back to Agatha, his smile sharpening. "She's quite the image of you, Agatha. Except for those eyes... and that smile. Those aren't yours."
Rio stepped forward, her posture protective and her voice low. "Keep her name out of your mouth."
Magnus raised an eyebrow, his gaze flicking to Rio. "And you must be the infamous Rio Vidal. The one who stole Agatha away from her coven, her destiny."
Rio smirked, though her eyes were cold as steel. "And you must be the ex who didn't know how to take a hint."
Magnus's jaw tightened briefly before he forced his smile back into place. "Funny. I seem to recall Agatha and I having a bright future ahead of us before you meddled."
Agatha's voice was sharp as a blade. "Don't rewrite history, Magnus. You were a pawn, just like the rest of them."
Magnus's expression darkened. "And now? You've traded power and prestige for... this?" He gestured around at the bustling market, his disdain evident.
Agatha took a step forward, her chin held high. "I traded manipulation and control for freedom and family. Something you'll never understand."
Magnus's gaze flicked back to Y/n, lingering too long. "Freedom and family," he murmured. "How quaint. Tell me, Agatha, does she know who she is? What she's capable of?"
Y/n narrowed her eyes, stepping in front of her mothers. "I know enough. And I know I don't need to listen to you."
Magnus chuckled darkly. "Such spirit. We'll see how long that lasts." He looked at Agatha one final time. "This isn't over."
With that, he turned and disappeared into the crowd as suddenly as he had appeared.
The car ride home was heavy with silence. Y/n sat in the back seat, her shawl wrapped tightly around her shoulders. Finally, she spoke, her voice breaking the tension.
"Who was that guy?"
Agatha sighed, glancing at Rio before answering. "His name is Magnus. He's... someone from my past. Someone I hoped I'd never see again."
Rio added her voice firm, "And someone who doesn't matter now. He's a relic of a life we left behind."
Y/n frowned. "He seemed pretty interested in me. Why?"
Agatha hesitated, her voice softening. "Because you're my daughter. And that makes you a target for people who think they can use you to get to me."
Y/n sat up straighter, her expression resolute. "I'm not scared of him. He doesn't know me."
Rio reached back, squeezing Y/n's hand. "Good. Because we're not letting him get near you. Ever."
Agatha glanced at Y/n through the rearview mirror, her voice trembling slightly. "I won't let him take anything from me. Not this time."
Rio's free hand found Agatha's, squeezing it tightly. "He won't. We won't let him."
And in the quiet strength of Rio's voice, Agatha found the courage to believe it.
That night, after Y/n had gone to bed, Rio found Agatha sitting in front of the fire, staring into the flames. She approached quietly, handing her a glass of wine before sitting beside her.
"You're blaming yourself," Rio said softly.
Agatha didn't look at her. "He's here because of me. Because of what I was. What I did."
Rio reached out, taking Agatha's hand in hers. "He's here because he's a bitter, entitled coward who doesn't know how to let go. That's not on you."
Agatha's eyes glistened with unshed tears. "He looked at Y/n like she was a prize. A way to... to claim the Harkness line."
Rio's grip tightened. "And we won't let him. You're not fighting him alone, Ags. I'm here. Always."
Agatha finally met her gaze, her voice trembling. "I don't deserve you."
Rio leaned in, pressing her forehead against Agatha's. "You deserve every bit of this family. And Magnus will learn the hard way that no one messes with what's ours."
The firelight danced in Agatha's eyes, and she felt hope for the first time that day. Together, they would protect Y/n. No matter what it took.

دقة كعك فلسطينية / Dugga ka'k falastinia (Palestinian spice blend for cakes)
دُقَّة كَعْك ("dugga ka'k"; "cake powder")—also known as "بَهَار الكَعْك" ("bahār al-ka'k"; "cake spice") or "بَهَارَات الكَعْك" ("bahārāt al-ka'k"; "cake spices")—is a blend of spices used in Palestinian cakes and sweet pastries. Even when a recipe doesn't call for the blend explicitly, you'll often spot its components in the ingredients list: aniseed, fennel, mahlab, and mastic.
"دُقَّة" is a noun meaning "fine powder." It comes from the verb "دَقَّ" ("daqqa": Levantine pronunciation, "dagga" or "da'a"), meaning "to crush," "to grind," or "to powder." The verb is of the root pattern "د ق ق" (d q q), which produces words related to accuracy and precision (and thus, to small measures of things): compare "دِقّة" ("diqqa") "accuracy"; "دَقِيقَة" ("daqīqa") "minute" (the measure of time); and "دَقِيق" ("daqīq"), which means both "accurate" and "flour, meal."
"كَعْك" refers to pastries including cookies, tarts, buns, and cakes; it is related to the Aramaic "כַּעְכָּא" ("ka'kā") "cake."
This spice blend is used for pastries including مَعْمُول ("ma'mūl")—date-filled semolina cookies—and فَتُوت ("fatūt"), a soft, sweet flatbread from Nablus. The sweet, liquorice-like fennel and aniseed, the mahlab's notes of fruit and almond, and the mastic's smell of cedar and citrus combine to make a delicately aromatic blend that gives an incredible depth of scent and flavor when small amounts are added in with flour.

Ingredients:
2 Tbsp (11g) aniseed (يانسون)
2 Tbsp fennel seeds (شمره / شومر)
2 tsp (7g) mahlab seeds (محلب) (or 2 tsp mahlab powder, packed)
1/4 tsp (.8g) mastic granules (مستكة)
Pinch of granulated sugar
Pinch of grated nutmeg (optional)
Aniseed, fennel, and mahlab are essential to this blend. Mastic is usually included. Small amounts of nutmeg and cinnamon are also possible additions. Some people also include a very small amount of a commercial "ريحة الكعك" ("riha al-ka'k" "cake scent”)—also known as "كلفة كعك" ("kulfa al-ka'k")—which might contain sweet spices such as cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and allspice, as well as camphor (كَافُور), Arab yeast (خميرة العرب), bay laurel leaves, and rose hips (ذر الورد), depending on where it is sourced.
The word "يانسون" ("yansoun") can be used to refer to aniseed or to star anise (or to a beverage brewed with aniseed); in this context, it invariably refers to aniseed. Aniseed is an oval-shaped seed—smelling of liquorice, and looking a bit like cumin, fennel, or caraway, but much smaller—with a body that tapers in towards the stem end. It can be found at a halal grocery store.
Mahlab seeds may be found at a halal grocery store, though you are more likely to find it in pre-ground form. The whole seeds may also be purchased online. Mahlab should be purchased in small quantities and kept in the refrigerator or even the freezer, as it will go rancid after several months at room temperature.

Mastic gum is the resin produced by the mastic tree. It is also known as mastika (مستكة), mastiha, muskeh, and masticha (Μαστίχα / μαστίχα). It may be labelled "arabic gum," but should not be confused with gum arabic, which is the sap of the acacia tree. Mastic is in the form of pale yellow droplets, not overly angular, usually the size of peas or smaller; gum arabic is a darker amber to reddish color, and has sheer angles. Mastic should smell of pine when ground. Ask at your local halal grocery store, as it may be behind the counter.

Instructions:
1. Toast fennel seeds in a dry skillet on medium heat, agitating often, until fragrant and a shade darker. Set aside on a plate to cool. Repeat with aniseed and mahlab seeds.
2. Remove skillet from heat and toast any pre-ground spices, agitating constantly, for about 30 seconds.
3. Grind mastic with a pinch of sugar in a mortar and pestle. Grind aniseed, fennel, and mahlab in a mortar and pestle or using a spice mill. Add nutmeg and mix.
You may be able to grind everything together in a spice mill if you're making a larger batch. Don't put mastic in a spice mill alone, as it can stick to the blades.
4. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.

Battle of the Bands
Hobie, Miguel, Gabriel, Gwen and 1st person pov OC / MC
New Adult magical realism AU (obvi) brain worm that has grown from a 2-shot screenplay for some fun comics into a monster. This fic is like Tremors in my brain.
The summer before college MC, Gabriel O'Hara, and Miguel O'Hara go on an international road trip with their metal band, Neon Requiem. Destination? BandFest, the Battle of the Bands in London guaranteed to secure the winning band a record deal. They meet other ATSV characters along the way.
No mention of Y/N / Reader, written from 1st person POV. Self-insertion is made easier by fewer details about the MC.
Notes on language: Tried my best here, if you are a native speaker of French, let me know if the MC's French is unnatural and I will love you forever.
Romance, angst, and poorly understood music concepts are often written as having a distinct visual component because I am an artist first. <

Chapter 1 - “Vous êtes maître de votre vie et de vos émotions, ne l’oubliez jamais. Pour le meilleur et pour le pire”
The Rusty Nail's neon whir and raucous rhythms had been muted to a melancholy hum that evening, it was a ghost town, the emptiness of the dimly lit bar echoing with decades of unfulfilled longings. I nursed my drink, letting the smoky burn of liquor etch contours of quiet contemplation onto my throat as I surveyed the handful of kindred souls keeping solemn vigil. Life had been feeling heavy, and I needed to write, to make art, and to get lost in music.
At the far end of the bar hunched a beautiful wraith, his slim, angular frame sheathed in torn denim and studded leather. Something indefinable shimmered around him, unsung poetry, snippets of melodies, a symphony I could see and hear and almost touch. Drawn like a moth to the lambent glow of the music, I slid onto the stool beside the ethereal punk spectre. In my mind's eye, I crowned him the prince of punk, a fairy tale rebel.
Our bodies brushed intimately in the cramped space, raising ghosts of sensation along the exposed skin of my fishnets. "Wozzat, luv?" he murmured, kohl-rimmed eyes flickering over the point of contact with a soldering heat.
Mon dieu, {My God} Had I spoken my admiration aloud? A flush crept up my cheeks as I scrambled for a response.
"Désolé. Je répétais quelque chose pour ne pas l'oublier… Need to write it down before I lose it," {Sorry. I was repeating something so I wouldn't forget it…} I mumbled, a flimsy excuse for my wandering mind.
Fumbling through my bag ,I pulled out my tattered notebook, fingers trembling as I scribbled down a scrap of verse inspired by the punk's incandescent presence beside me. I scribbled my observations in hasty strokes. The dying light of day bled into night, a liminal space that begged for a soundtrack. I could almost hear it, a melody just out of reach, shimmering in the smoky air.
"The liminal light of late afternoon, yawning into early evening…" I muttered, pulling on the strings of the melody, trying to draw it back to me. "I don't want to be loved for the things that I don't do. I don't want to be just a pretty face, I want to be a work of art…We are all just works of art."
The jukebox fell silent, making my mutterings around sift and strange, slightly unhinged---but the punk prince remained---his gaze heavy on my skin. I met his stare, unflinching. Unabashed curiosity flickered in eyes, wide brown and doe-like, framed by lashes so lush they seemed to blur the line between masculine and feminine, earthly and ethereal. I found myself dizzied by warring impulses - to flee this unsettling intimacy, or be consumed by it wholly.
He was a changeling, gorgeously androgynous: part punk Mona Lisa with a Cheshire cat grin, part Jean-Michel Baptiste, part force-of-fucking-nature. He made me feel like a background character in his story, could be a punk fairy princess, and I would be the dragon. My thoughts raced, fragments of poetry and half-formed desires. I scribbled faster, chasing the threads of inspiration, but a nudge from my prince brought me back to earth.
Snatches of poetry, raw and unfinished, that I urgently longed to refine on the page before they dissipated like the last wisps of smoke in a spent ashtray. But the punk's aura dragged me too deeply into devotional reverie. I glanced up apologetically as my concentration scattered, the thread of inspiration slipping through my fingers once more.
The bartender had sprouted up directly in front of me, and she eyed me expectantly. Her hair was a shock of blue curls and silver streaks shorn close to her scalp, it made her eyes seem more gray. Her skin etched with lines that mapped out the years like a roadmap. I felt the familiar pang of a poem lost to the ether.
"Un…Jack Daniel's, s'il vous plaît," {A…Jack Daniel's, please} I said, no longer able to filter its lilt from my words, as I wasn't paying attention to dulling it.
"Blimey, that's a proper choice, innit? You 'ere for the battle of the bands event this week, love?"
"Oui, how did you know?" {Yes, how did you know?}
"Just a…sense," he demurred with a wicked grin. "Call it a punk's intuition, darling. I'm in the mix too, y'know."
The bartender chuckled as she set my drink down. "You mean because everyone is here for Bandfest? Don't listen to this one, lovey, he's incorrigible. The crowds will be in later on, but you're a bit early."
"Shh, Roz. Who's up tonight?" The prince asked, a wicked gleam in his eye.
"Oh, you want insider information? What's in it for me?"
"Givin' away free tattoos, could autograph yer arm, love."
"I'll pass, thanks. The brackets are up in an hour anyway. It's Night Terrors vs. Death Rapture, Blood Prophecy vs. Cherry Bomb, Spider Punks vs. Neon Requiem…"
"Why are the punk bands going up against the metal bands?" I asked, just as the prince inquired about Phantom Pulse.
"There wasn't a lot of quality competition this year, or that's what the sponsors said, so they automatically advance to the semifinals since they won last year."
"Bollocks!" The prince cried, his outrage palpable.
"Oi Punk, you don't want to sign with Vic Luna at Zenith Music Group, anyway."
"Tu…ne le fais pas? Mais pourquoi?" {You…don't? But why?} The words tumbled out, my curiosity getting the better of me. At her blank stare, I repeated the question in English, heat rising to my cheeks.
Roz leaned in, her voice low, "Look kid, it's complicated…"
The prince rolled his eyes, a sneer playing at his lips. "Betrayed a lot of good bands."
"You don't need to remind me, Punk, I lived through it. Despite the changes at Zenith Music Group, they still organize the annual Bandfest, which showcases both established and emerging talent in the punk and metal scenes. The event is highly respected within the community and provides a platform for bands to gain exposure and connect with fans," the bartender continued, her words stilted, rehearsed.
"Ay, and they are the sponsor bringing in your crowds." The prince's voice was sharp, laced with an emotion I couldn't quite place.
"The only time we're out of the red, punkass. We'd have to shut down if it weren't for the Battle." She said heavily, "Which is the greater evil, we are a place of refuge for several members of the community, not just you."
"You don't need to remind me Roz, I'm living through it. Right, I'll stop ragging on the corporate sods for now, until you have some plausible deniability." He raised his hands in mock surrender, a bitter laugh escaping his lips.
"There's a good Punk." Roz smiled, sliding him another pint before retreating.
I made a mental note to warn my bandmates about Vic and Zenith's sordid history. We were in this for the music, not the money, no one played metal for the money--but it never hurt to be cautious.
"Roz is like the den mother of the London punk scene, a living testament to grit and resilience, and screaming yourself hoarse at basement shows. Dream t'be like her when I grow up. To listen without judgment, offer advice without preaching, and know when to slide a shot of whiskey across the bar and when to cut you off. She has a way of looking at you, really seeing you, like you matter… like you are more than just another face in the crowd." His voice trails off, heavy with emotion. He blinks and shakes it off.
"Can I see it?" The prince's voice cut through our lost thoughts, his fingers reaching for my notebook.
I clutched it to my chest, a knee-jerk reaction. "Can you look into my very soul, like Roz?"
His smirk widened, that Cheshire cat grin that set my heart racing. He nodded, a challenge in his eyes.
"I'll show you mine if you show me yours," he purred, and I felt my stomach flip. I repeated the phrase in my mind, first in French, then in English, just to be sure I'd heard him right. Wasn't this some flirty idiom?
"You have a book of poetry somewhere hidden in those skinny jeans, mon ami?" {my friend?} I ask, hesitant, double-checking his meaning. He flirts like others breathe.
In lieu of an answer, he produced a sharpie from thin air. Before I could protest, he had my arm in his grasp, his touch electric against my skin. I shrugged off my leather jacket, baring my arms to his ink-stained fingers. Roz chuckled as she set another drink before me, clearly amused by the prince's antics.
"You'll need it…I see you took this wanker up on the free tattoo offer. Don't let him draw any on your arms."
"Any? …Any what?"
"Wankers," she clarified with a laugh. It clarifies nothing, I need to study my British slang.
"I would not mar the flesh of such a beautiful and willing participant, Roz. Kindly fuck off," the prince mumbled around the sharpie cap clenched between his teeth.
Between the verses he scrawled, he peppered me with questions, his voice a giddy whisper.
"So, who's your poison, love? Which bands get your motor runnin'?"
"Ah, j'adore Rammstein, Gojira, et bien sûr, Motörhead. And so many others, doesn't even scratch the surface. Et toi?" {Ah, I love Rammstein... And you?}
"Proper choices, those. For me, it's the classics - Sex Pistols, The Clash, Buzzcocks. Real raw, in-your-face stuff, y'know?"
I leaned in, excited, but too close. I nearly jumped as my lips grazed the dusky shell of his ear. "Ah, un homme de bon goût! I've seen the Buzzcocks live, you know. Pure chaos, c'était incroyable!" {Ah, a man of good taste! I've seen the Buzzcocks live, you know. Pure chaos, it was incredible!}
"No bleedin' way! Metal chick like you? I'd give me left bollock to have seen the Sex Pistols live. But I did catch The Clash back in '07. Changed me life, it did."
"Lemmy, sans aucun doute. The man's a legend!" {Lemmy, without a doubt.} I declare into the bar.
"Oi, don't go disrespectin' Johnny, now! The bloke's a punk icon, 'e is!"
"You're a punk icon!" someone shouted from the back, but the prince waved them off with a grin.
"Oh, I didn't catch your name," I said, with a sudden shame, my brow furrowed.
"Everyone just calls me Punk. You can too. Just not dirty punk, we don't want to come to blows, do we, love?"
"I'd kick your ass, mon ami. Pas grand chose à donner, mon petit prince des fées… eh mon prince dégingandé, right? I would not describe you as petite even if you are skinny." {I'd kick your ass, my friend. Not much to give, my little fairy prince… eh my lanky prince, right?}
Miguel was at my side in an instant, all rippling muscle and furrowed consternation. "Carnalita, {little sis} why did you sneak out on practice just to drink in this hellhole?" he rumbled, disapproval lacing every sonorous word. Tenderness faded a bit.
I met his gruff chiding with an insouciant toss of my hair. "Salut, Miguel. Ça fait longtemps." {Hello, Miguel. It's been a while.}
"Is that Jack? No puedo mas… Carnalita…This shit is bad for you." {I can't take it anymore…little sis...}
"Je nais etre rond comme une queue de pelle. Tu es vraiment un trou de balle quand tu dis des choses pareilles!" {I would be round as a shovel handle. (Idiom, essentially she is saying ~ I was born to be drunk) You are really a dumbass when you say things like that!}
Miguel's grumbling stream of Spanish reprimands washed over me as I settled into our familiar dynamic - the tender yet terse cantata of friend and protector that had composed them score of our relationship since childhood. For all his bluster, I knew every arrhythmic cadence encoded Miguel's steadfast affection.
Only Gabriel's soft interjection could salve the rising discord. "You worry too much, Miggy. We've been practicing all week."
He cast me a plaintive glance, silently pleading for conciliation, and I grudgingly obliged with an internal eyeroll. "Qu'il aille se faire! C'est vraiment chiant tu te rends compte." {Let him go fuck himself! It's really annoying, you know.}
Heedless of my saucy french asides, Miguel merely drew a fortifying breath before continuing in that maddening timbre of unrelenting reason. "Gabri and I could have come out with you. You shouldn't go out alone in an unknown city - it's not safe for you, mi carnalita."
The prince leaned towards us with a lazy smirk, "S'not that serious. The Rusty Nail is safe enough." He paused as the bartender snorted in agreement before continuing, "We're keeping the lady safe, mate…you can trust me, I'm one of the Spider-Punks."
Miguel simply sneered at the prince's proffered handshake, dismissing it out of hand. "You have arms like sticks. How would you keep her safe?"
The punk's smirk widened as he shrugged. "Ah, one of those. Never skip leg day, eh bruv?"
I strangled a guffaw as Gabriel hastened to run interference, engulfing the punk's hand eagerly. "We've heard of you guys, the local punk band, yeah? Your drummer is…gahh…Ah-Mazing! You think we could meet?"
"You call that punk noise "rock"?" Miguel scoffed. "Metal is where the real skill lies…Real talent is in the complexity, the technical skill. Metal pushes boundaries, takes you to new places. Punk's just three chords and an attitude."
I rolled my eyes. At this rate, I'd have to drag Miguel out before he started a brawl.

The prince unfolded himself, towering over me. "Tell you what, mate. Let's settle this on stage. We'll let the crowd decide who's got the real chops," he challenged.
Gabriel chimed in, "Pero, mana's right, Miguel." {But, sister is right, Miguel.}
Miguel looked ready to explode, but Gabriel's eyes held him in check.
"Music's music. Let's just focus on putting on a good show, and maybe we can learn something from their band, eh?" Gabriel said.
The prince leaned in, lips grazing my cheek. "Aye, love. Can't wait to teach your wall of meat here a thing or two. How about we give 'em a show they won't forget…later?"
I grinned, "Oui! A collaboration? Here… Ça ne casse pas trois pattes à un canard…mais, pour vous. I want it back later." {Yes! A collaboration? Here…It doesn't break three duck legs (Idiom ~ It's nothing special) …but, for you. I want it back later.}
The lanky punk sauntered off, his studded boots leaving faint trails of glitter on the barroom floor. Miguel's scowl deepened as he watched him depart, fists clenched tightly.
"Is that your poetry notebook?" he growled, voice rumbling low.
"Yes, I traded it to the punk faerie for these tattoos, I smirked, revealing the vine-like scrawl of ink now adorning my flesh like raised scars from whipping brambles.
Miguel's face darkened further, storm clouds gathering at my words. "The one you never let anyone touch or read…"
His voice strangled to a whisper, and I could not parse the complex calculus of emotions flitting behind his eyes
Gabriel placed a calming hand on his brother's arm.
"Easy, hermano {brother}. He's not worth it," Gabriel said in a soothing tone.
"Be nice, Punk is a good guy. I like him," I countered softly, a warm glow blossomed within me as I realized my entire arm was now a crawling garden of sentences entirely in French.
Miguel opened his mouth, undoubtedly to unleash a heated retort, but Gabriel cut in, "Should we go look at the brackets to see who we're facing?"
"It looks like my entire arm is covered with quotes from The Little Prince, which happens to be my favorite book. It's actually quite a sweet gesture," I said softly, fingertips grazing the raised words like treasured runes.
With renewed curiosity, I examined the ink quote now etched on my skin: "Vous êtes maître de votre vie et de vos émotions, ne l'oubliez jamais. Pour le meilleur et pour le pire." {You are the master of your life and your emotions, never forget that. For better or worse.}
I didn't mention the lone scrawl that could have been a phone number hidden amidst the literary foliage now vining my limb. Miguel was in full-on Dad mode, and I didn't need to add fuel to that particular fire.
"I already know the competition for the quarterfinals, we don't need to waste our time. Come on, manos {used as slang for brother}, we're going to kick some ass!" I giggled brightly, elated at my new 'tattoos' scrawling up my arms. I didn't put my leather jacket back on, I didn't want to cover any of it up.
Miguel's glare never wavered, his eyes fixed on the far side of the bar where the prince had disappeared into the crowd. "Don't tempt me. Let's go, carnalita {little sister}, time for practice."
With a resigned sigh, I surrendered to my brothers' insistent tugs, allowing them to lead me from the Rusty Nail. But the punk prince's parting words still reverberated through my mind like the lingering notes of a siren song. Later, he had purred, that single hushed syllable seeming to contain all the intoxicating lure of a siren's call - equal parts velvet promise and brazen challenge, twined inextricably into an enchantment I could not resist. The whole damn bar was a sailor's nightmare.

hiiii sorry it's late but thac draft 2?
Hi there! I assume this is for the WIP game, though (finally!) my fic for THAUC is no longer a WIP! You can find my project partner's post on it here.
I'll very gladly provide you some info anyway, as the fic drops the day after tomorrow (ahhhh!) as part of THAUC 2024 run by @fellowshipofthefics. I had the amazing privilege of collaborating with @mrmrbaggins on this project, all 15k of it (and as they very aptly put, we could have written 50k on this if not for the need to meet the deadline, lol!).
Our prompt was "In order to stay in Erebor, Bilbo must be adopted into a dwarven family, but not every dwarf is keen on that idea." We thought about going really angsty as the most obvious choice, but we actually decided pretty quickly instead to lean into humor, adding the follow-up: "Oh, but not because they're xenophobic, quite the opposite: Everyone wants to claim their favorite hobbit burglar as their brother!"
While writing we both laughed out loud at our own hilarity several times, though a little true feeling snuck in and (flatteringly!) made @mrmrbaggins tear up as well. If you like found family, I think you'll really enjoy the fic, anon!

“Protection,” Bofur muttered to himself, flipping the visor down on the metal helmet with a clang that rattled his skull. He wished his lucky hat fit underneath, not just as his usual talisman, but as much-needed padding. “Can’t do the other things, but protecting is easy. Easy. Like a pickaxe through coal. Just keep him alive and don’t sweat to death yourself.”
The plate armor rattled and clanked like a rattly cart full of loose scrap metal, but Bofur knew the heavy - and hot - armor was a necessary component of his part in their plan. The Ur family’s plan (which was mostly Bombur’s plan, to be fair) only needed three days to prove their best three qualities to Bilbo and thus convince their favorite hobbit to join their family forever. So Bofur had encased himself in metal and loaded about sixty pounds of weapons on top of that, and the mere sight of him at Bilbo’s side should send any shady dwarves running.
Unsurprisingly, Bilbo heard him coming. No need to knock on the door, even, for a curly-haired head was already curiously sticking out into the hallway with a bemused expression. In answer, Bofur lifted up the metal visor and grinned, which only widened as Bilbo’s jaw dropped.
“Mornin’, Bilbo!” Bofur said cheerfully. “Ready to get goin’?”
“Bofur?” The hobbit gaped incredulously and looked Bofur up and down, taking in the shining silver plate mail etched with angular runes that covered Bofur very literally from head to toe. “What in Yavanna’s name are you wearing?”
Bofur laughed. “I know hobbits don’t go in for warfare much, but I thought you might recognize ‘armor’ by now!”
Bilbo fixed him with an exasperated look. “You know what I mean, you daft creature! I’ve seen you in actual battle with less armor than this. Is it… ceremonial for something?”
“Have you ever known me to stand on ceremony? ‘Course not! I said I’d escort you ‘round the Mountain today, and this is just the best protection possible.”
“Oh,” said Bilbo, brow furrowing. “Is it likely to be very dangerous to walk about today for some reason?”
“No, nothin’ like that,” Bofur said quickly. “Just, eh, no harm in bein’ prepared, right?”
“...Right,” Bilbo agreed doubtfully, but still stepped out and closed the door behind him.

Researching the Aesthetic Part 2: Deus Ex
The game Deus Ex also has a similar aesthetic to what I am looking for. It takes place in a dystopian future where corporations control the world through the manipulation of technology and the weaponization of the global peacekeeping force UNATCO. Most of the game is more typically cyberpunk; bodily implants, cyborgs, et cetera, but the few robotic enemies you fight throughout the game have a defined steelpunk aesthetic. They have blocky components and shiny metal casings with various tech details (circuitry, rivets etc) visible. I wonder if some of the angular-ness of their design was a result of hardware limitations - the game came out in 2000 after all.
I like that design-wise, there are few attempts to make the robots look humanoid. They may have arms and legs, but they are still very abstract and industrial. It doesn't shy away from the fact that these are machines, and they only walk upright because it is mechanically efficient.
However, this is just a look aesthetically. I plan for the enemies in my game to not be mecha or any sort of walking robot, but moreso small fighting vehicles either controlled by an AI, or operated remotely. (If I do the second option, I could do a cool 4th-wall break where you, the player, are technically one of the remote vehicle operators.) This means that I will specifically look at interesting vehicle designs for my third piece of aesthetic research.

JavaScript Frameworks
Step 1) Polyfill
Most JS frameworks started from a need to create polyfills. A Polyfill is a js script that add features to JavaScript that you expect to be standard across all web browsers. Before the modern era; browsers lacked standardization for many different features between HTML/JS/and CSS (and still do a bit if you're on the bleeding edge of the W3 standards)
Polyfill was how you ensured certain functions were available AND worked the same between browsers.
JQuery is an early Polyfill tool with a lot of extra features added that makes JS quicker and easier to type, and is still in use in most every website to date. This is the core standard of frameworks these days, but many are unhappy with it due to performance reasons AND because plain JS has incorporated many features that were once unique to JQuery.
JQuery still edges out, because of the very small amount of typing used to write a JQuery app vs plain JS; which saves on time and bandwidth for small-scale applications.
Many other frameworks even use JQuery as a base library.
Step 2) Encapsulated DOM
Storing data on an element Node starts becoming an issue when you're dealing with multiple elements simultaneously, and need to store data as close as possible to the DOMNode you just grabbed from your HTML, and probably don't want to have to search for it again.
Encapsulation allows you to store your data in an object right next to your element so they're not so far apart.
HTML added the "data-attributes" feature, but that's more of "loading off the hard drive instead of the Memory" situation, where it's convenient, but slow if you need to do it multiple times.
Encapsulation also allows for promise style coding, and functional coding. I forgot the exact terminology used,but it's where your scripting is designed around calling many different functions back-to-back instead of manipulating variables and doing loops manually.
Step 3) Optimization
Many frameworks do a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to caching frequently used DOM calls, among other data tools, DOM traversal, and provides standardization for commonly used programming patterns so that you don't have to learn a new one Everytime you join a new project. (you will still have to learn a new one if you join a new project.)
These optimizations are to reduce reflowing/redrawing the page, and to reduce the plain JS calls that are performance reductive. A lot of these optimatizations done, however, I would suspect should just be built into the core JS engine.
(Yes I know it's vanilla JS, I don't know why plain is synonymous with Vanilla, but it feels weird to use vanilla instead of plain.)
Step 4) Custom Element and component development
This was a tool to put XML tags or custom HTML tags on Page that used specific rules to create controls that weren't inherent to the HTML standard. It also helped linked multiple input and other data components together so that the data is centrally located and easy to send from page to page or page to server.
Step 5) Back-end development
This actually started with frameworks like PHP, ASP, JSP, and eventually resulted in Node.JS. these were ways to dynamically generate a webpage on the server in order to host it to the user. (I have not seen a truly dynamic webpage to this day, however, and I suspect a lot of the optimization work is actually being lost simply by programmers being over reliant on frameworks doing the work for them. I have made this mistake. That's how I know.)
The backend then becomes disjointed from front-end development because of the multitude of different languages, hence Node.JS. which creates a way to do server-side scripting in the same JavaScript that front-end developers were more familiar with.
React.JS and Angular 2.0 are more of back end frameworks used to generate dynamic web-page without relying on the User environment to perform secure transactions.
Step 6) use "Framework" as a catch-all while meaning none of these;
Polyfill isn't really needed as much anymore unless your target demographic is an impoverished nation using hack-ware and windows 95 PCs. (And even then, they could possible install Linux which can use modern lightweight browsers...)
Encapsulation is still needed, as well as libraries that perform commonly used calculations and tasks, I would argue that libraries aren't going anywhere. I would also argue that some frameworks are just bloat ware.
One Framework I was researching ( I won't name names here) was simply a remapping of commands from a Canvas Context to an encapsulated element, and nothing more. There was literally more comments than code. And by more comments, I mean several pages of documentation per 3 lines of code.
Custom Components go hand in hand with encapsulation, but I suspect that there's a bit more than is necessary with these pieces of frameworks, especially on the front end. Tho... If it saves a lot of repetition, who am I to complain?
Back-end development is where things get hairy, everything communicates through HTTP and on the front end the AJAX interface. On the back end? There's two ways data is given, either through a non-html returning web call, *or* through functions that do a lot of heavy lifting for you already.
Which obfuscates how the data is used.
But I haven't really found a bad use of either method. But again; I suspect many things about performance impacts that I can't prove. Specifically because the tools in use are already widely accepted and used.
But since I'm a lightweight reductionist when it comes to coding. (Except when I'm not because use-cases exist) I can't help but think most every framework work, both front-end and Back-end suffers from a lot of bloat.
And that bloat makes it hard to select which framework would be the match for the project you're working on. And because of that; you could find yourself at the tail end of a development cycle realizing; You're going to have to maintain this as is, in the exact wrong solution that does not fit the scope of the project in anyway.
Well. That's what junior developers are for anyway...
